Wrong Region

When British PM Gordon Brown visited the US recently, Barack Obama responded to his gift of a penholder carved from the timbers of an anti-slavery ship by giving Brown a boxed set of 25 classic American movies on DVD.

Movies that won’t play on European DVD players.

While not exactly a film buff, Gordon Brown was touched when Barack Obama gave him a set of 25 classic American movies – including Psycho, starring Anthony Perkins on his recent visit to Washington.

Alas, when the PM settled down to begin watching them the other night, he found there was a problem.

The films only worked in DVD players made in North America and the words “wrong region” came up on his screen.

Now, that’s diplomacy.

President Obama Jokes About Being a Bad Bowler: 'It's Like the Special Olympics'

"President Obama, in his taping with Jay Leno Thursday afternoon, attempted to yuk it up with the funnyman, and ended up insulting the disabled.

Towards the end of his approximately 40-minute appearance, the president talked about how he's gotten better at bowling and has been practicing in the White House bowling alley.

He bowled a 129, the president said.

"That's very good, Mr. President," Leno said sarcastically.

"WASHINGTON — On Friday, Michelle Obama will begin digging up a patch of White House lawn to plant a vegetable garden, the first since Eleanor Roosevelt’s victory garden in World War II. There will be no beets (the president doesn’t like them) but arugula will make the cut.

While the organic garden will provide food for the first family’s meals and formal dinners, its most important role, Mrs. Obama said, will be to educate children about healthful, locally grown fruit and vegetables at time when obesity has become a national concern."

Buying something as simple as a DVD is obviously way beyond his paygrade, and so is being President of the USA. He can not even speak properly without his two teleprompter screens following him around, and even then he manages to put his foot in his mouth. His administration has got to be the most incompetent, naive, ignorant and amateurish bunch of crooked clowns ever to lead this country.

I wonder what new blunder or massive failure tomorrow brings, I find this all quite
tragic but also amusing.

It's been awhile since I heard the story, but others died on the trip, correct?

3 of the men died on the trip. One drowned. The other was murdered when he caught one of the porters stealing food. The murderer was left to fend for himself in the jungle. There is NO WAY that guy survived. It's amazing that any of them made it out alive - a true feat of amazing endurance. A story for the ages. Roosevelt made the trip into the disease ridden, insect swarming, Brazillian jungle as a 52 year old man, with natives armed with poison arrows and skull smashing clubs invisibly tracking their every move. Death was around every corner and he made it out alive. I respect the hell out of Teddy Roosevelt.

106 Malatrope  Thu, Mar 19, 2009 6:45:11pm

I honestly think it's a shame that by the time all this is over with, no-one in the country is going to be able to be proud of the first black president. And the huge, two-year long buildup just makes this train wreck all the more horrendous.

If this ever gets over with, that is.

Obamas to Plant White House Vegetable Garden

"WASHINGTON — On Friday, Michelle Obama will begin digging up a patch of White House lawn to plant a vegetable garden, the first since Eleanor Roosevelt’s victory garden in World War II. There will be no beets (the president doesn’t like them) but arugula will make the cut.

While the organic garden will provide food for the first family’s meals and formal dinners, its most important role, Mrs. Obama said, will be to educate children about healthful, locally grown fruit and vegetables at time when obesity has become a national concern."

They better plow that vegetable patch close to the seement pond so they don't have to tote that water very far.

They can teach the kids about polk salad, mustard and turnip greens. ham hocks, pigs feet, chitlins and all other manner of organic food for the soul.

110 wordsworth  Thu, Mar 19, 2009 6:52:52pm

It's funny. It's a good dig. Truthfully though, region free DVD players, or players that can play NTSC (the format we use here in the States) are pretty common amongst European agencies used to dealing with foreign content in DVD format. If someone were to really want to watch the petty gift, they likely coul. Still funny.

He'll have to include a stepdown 220/110v transformer along with a NTSC television set. The UK operates on the PAL and 220v system. (Basically, it's the number of lines per inch on the screen.) I'm not real sure he would want to spend that much of the taxpayer's money just to make things right over such a gafftastically wonderful and thoughtful gift. Speaking as LGFer from the UK...

Our country was, at first, the ONLY one standing next to the US when it came to Iraq. We fight alongside you there and in Afghanistan. In WW2 as we bravely held our ground against the Nazis you came to our aid.

Selective highlights of modern military history, but the bonds that tie us together run beyond that. They run beyond the shared culture that saw us import Elvis and export the Beatles. The bonds between us were not always positive, but they run right back to the founding of your country.

You are our younger cousins. We share the same cultural DNA and that's that.

Oh - and yes you are right about us being invaded by Islam. I am just happy to know that if the worse comes to the worst, I can always emigrate to America and be assured of never seeing a single sign of Islam.

I know - I'll settle in Dearborn, Michigan. That sounds like a nice, white bread Christian town.

On the subject of Gordon Brown, I am only sad that our prime minister (who is, by some margin, less Socialist than your country's current choice of president) doesn't know how to chip a DVD player to make it multi-region.

Maybe he has a blu-ray Playstation 3.

BHO isn't all that bright...might be smart, but he isn't bright.

It's incredible that his staff could not drum up DVDs that are compatible with British/European broadcast standards. Never mind, the thought of such a cheesy gift ($250.00 tops!) to a world leader in and of itself is just plain ignorant, but you'd think all of the allegedly smart people working for BHO would grasp this simple fact.

The US, Japan, and (I think) Australia & New Zealand use NTSC. Europe uses PAL. Russia and most of the Middle East use SECAM. There are a couple of other standards, as well.

129 6pat6  Thu, Mar 19, 2009 8:53:39pm

It still needs to be able to be hooked up to a British PAL TV (different standards)...

Plus, the Brits use 240VAC/50Hz for their electricity. We have 110VAC/60Hz for ours.

132 mashiki  Thu, Mar 19, 2009 9:00:09pm

Should be a fine indication of why things like region encoding are a plain bad idea, and should never exist in the first place. As someone who watches movies/documentaries from R2,3 and 6 I can't tell you how much of a pain it would be if I didn't if it wasn't on a computer or I'd have to get a region free player.

133 6pat6  Thu, Mar 19, 2009 9:08:25pm

They do make TVs that are multi-standard and dual-voltage capable, but generally, you'll find these only in a military Base Exchange on a US base in Europe or the Far East. I have one that I have not used in probably 15 years or more. As for multi-standard-capable DVD players, I do not believe those are made. The standards were adopted many years ago. Different broadcast standards are like regional voltage differences. North and South America use 110VAC/60Hz for household and general use, and 220VAC/60Hz for heavy-duty use, like clothes dryers, welders, ovens, and such. Europe, Africa, the ME, and much of Asia use 220/240VAC/50Hz for general use.

Some nations drive on the right, others on the left.

It's just the way it is.

134 PaxAmericana  Thu, Mar 19, 2009 9:14:33pm

While Pres. Obama's gift gaffe is funny, in a Three Stooges kind of way, it is unfortunately emblematic of the lack of work ethic and lackadasical manner to which the current Administration functions: Quote, not knowing about the AIG bonuses, unquote; being unable to actually write bills and leaving them to a completely corrupt Congress; continually insulting Allies and rivals in diplomatic meetings due to thoughtless behavior. The real problem here is not that it damages our economy, standard of living, or even international reputation but that at some point in the future (Gitmo, Afghanistan, Iran, CHINA) when real decisions need to be carefully thought out and implemented or people will die as a direct result the world essentially has a slacker with a slacker mentality making these life and death decisions. Eventually the POTUS may have to make the awful calculus a decision like that of Coventry to which Churchill had to make in WWII. I see nothing in the childish antics so far that give me any comfort in this President being able to do that.

144 Alberta Oil Peon  Thu, Mar 19, 2009 10:41:12pm

Not quite that simple. U.S. power is 120 volts, 60 Hz. IIRC, British power is 240 volts, 50 Hz.

IMHO, the best way for this to be rectified would be for some flunky in the U.S. Embassy in London to go out and buy deluxe editions of the movies on the list, in British format, and exchange them for useless ones that Brown has.

These people currently in charge are so stupid and clueless I'm embarrassed to have them represent my country. They give the British Prime Minister a set of DVDs that won't play in European players, you think these supposedly very intelligent people would have someone who knew about this stuff make sure they could be played in the UK. Then we have them giving the Russians a red button that's supposed to say "Reset" but instead says "Overcharge." Again, you think these stumble bums would do a little elementary checking to make sure they got the right word in Russian. Everything they've done so far is reckless, poorly researched, rushed and incompetent.

While they may be minor in the overall scheme of things, it shows a a disturbing level of incompetence and ignorance. Every day that passes George W. Bush looks more and more Presidential next to this pack of nitwits. I don't recall any previous administration looking so clueless and unprepared for the big time.

Of course, I would also have objected on the grounds that the whole idea was cheap and tawdry.

174 Annar  Fri, Mar 20, 2009 8:09:16am

175 n2stox  Fri, Mar 20, 2009 9:09:09am

As someone who has a wife that works in the arts with many from Europe, we had a nice chuckle about this when it occurred.

We both agreed that when Gordo went to play them, if he didn't know, he'll get a blank screen.

And this is the guy bringing the world together? by being uninformed enough to give a thoughtless gift. Or, was he so thoughtful and introspective that it really was the thought that counted, regardless of their complete uselessness?

Maybe he can "bring the world together" by first pushing for standaradized DVD formats. Of course, he'd have to push NTSC, which would once again portray America as bullies. Can't have that, now, can we?

I guess the next best thing would have been a free 30 day trial to Netflix. I believe they have operations in the UK.

But he's soooooo cool! Now that everyone in other countries loves us again, little piddling details don't matter. It's not like when that stupid George Bush was in charge and everyone laughed at us.

re: #3 bryantms

If Bush had done this, we wouldn't have heard the end of it. Where are Letterman, Stewart, Colbert, Leno and the rest of them now?!?!

Chirp, chirp, chirp go the MSM crickets.

They were probably bootlegs anyway!

re: #5 Sharmuta

Hard to pin the blame on the teleprompter for this one.

"Seriously, the teleprompter, I am sure it was George Bush's tp, told me to do it, really", whined Mr. T when confronted.

"...when confronted", now that's funny.

I'm glad we have a "smart" POTUS instead of that doofus Bush.

Oh yeah, George.... I miss you babe.

As we know according to the left / progressives all Dems are always highly educated, super intelligent and smart while all Republicans are uneducated, ignorant and dumb.
In essence those on the left have evolved in brilliance and understanding and those on the right have not while they cling to their religion, bibles and guns.

They are part of the attack team, demonizing rush and bankers.

I understand you have to punch in a manufacturer's code to enable the DVD layer to play another region's DVDs. Perhaps Mr. Obama can ask the CIA in London to get the appropriate code and email it to the PM ?

I wonder what he's getting Queen Elizabeth II when he visits London next month. The smart money is on either a ShamWow or a Big City Slider Station.

re: #169 Joel

What the rest of this article didn't disclose was that Obama gave BACK a bust of Churchill given to George W. Bush as a sign of solidarity after 9/11. It wasn't his to give back. What a faux pas.

I think BO ...(and he truly does stink) has a deep seated hate of Britain due to their colonial treatment of Kenya.
Just a thought !
It is hard and painful to watch this "Not ready for Prime time" administration in action. Clueless, careless and rude !

186 DEZes  Fri, Mar 20, 2009 2:17:28pm

By now this administration knows not to shop at Walmart for a gift for foreign dignitaries.
I hope the next guest likes McDonald's gift certificates.

Trust Gordon Brown to be the last person in the UK not wise to multi-region DVD players. I'm embarrassed.

re: #147 Slumbering Behemoth

:SIGH: Gentlemen, please. There is no way that sending a North American, NTSC format DVD player would fix this faux pas. You do realize I was being snarky and sarcastic in my #95, right?

Read what I said earlier! I stated that a US-spec DVD player would have BOTH broadcast standard AND voltage/frequency differences.

189 6pat6  Fri, Mar 20, 2009 3:08:19pm

Plus, there are Americans that actually think everyone is the same all around the world, and things like voltage differences and broadcast standard differences DO exist. I understood your sarc perfectly. I felt the need to expound a bit.

190 Kincsem  Fri, Mar 20, 2009 6:48:21pm

You'd think a citizen of the world like the Dear Leader would know the planet is divided into 6 DVD regions, and that DVDs come in 2 broadcast standard flavors (SECAM standard sets will play a PAL DVD). He must be one of those people who have never noticed the Region 1 markers on American-sold DVD players and most American-sold DVDs. All of those WORLDLY geniuses who surround him, and nobody knew this about DVD standards?

Fortunately, most PAL players will play NTSC disks [but the reverse is not generally true!], and all-region players are common in the UK and Europe [Amazon UK sells them]. Videotape is trickier, but some countries commonly have VCRs that will play NTSC tapes on PAL sets--I've sent NTSC tapes to Australia and Brazil, both PAL countries, and the recipients were able to play them.

Finding a region-free player that will convert a PAL disk to play on a NTSC set in the US is not hard, but you won't find them on the shelf of major retail chains, because Americans won't read subtitles and seem shocked to discover the huge movie and tv series making industries that exist elsewhere in the world, some of it very good. Asia makes great horror movies, but instead of marketing the original, Hollywood does a remake with an American cast.

I love old Hollywood and old American tv, but most of current Hollywood offerings make me ill. So, I've discovered Asian horror, Chinese wuxia, Japanese cop shows [Bayside Shakedown!]. All of my DVD players will play anything from anywhere. They weren't expensive, and they opened up lots of possibilities, like the remastered version of what is [I think] Charlton Heston's best movie, "The War Lord" (1965) which isn't even available in the US on DVD but was released by a German company on a Region 2 PAL disk. Foreign DVDs are easy to order, either from the various flavors of Amazon, or from other reputable sources of legitimate copies.

191 William  Fri, Mar 20, 2009 9:27:00pm
When British PM Gordon Brown visited the US recently, Barack Obama responded to his gift of a penholder carved from the timbers of an anti-slavery ship by giving Brown a boxed set of 25 classic American movies on DVD.

This is absurd on so many levels.

Even if the DVDs were the correct region code, and playable in England, the gift is completely thoughtless.  Give a bunch of DVDs that can be purchased in any store, in return for a one-of-a-kind priceless artifact?

Fast forward a few years, and these off-the-shelf DVDs will become unplayable obsolete paperweights, while the priceless artifact from Brown will remain a priceless artifact.

The Chosen One is completely out of his depth.
