Video: Obama’s Special Message to Iran

The President of the United States lavishes praise on a totalitarian Islamic state hellbent on acquiring nuclear weapons.

Youtube Video

Today I want to extend my very best wishes to all who are celebrating Nowruz around the world.

This holiday is both an ancient ritual and a moment of renewal, and I hope that you enjoy this special time of year with friends and family.

In particular, I would like to speak directly to the people and leaders of the Islamic Republic of Iran. Nowruz is just one part of your great and celebrated culture. Over many centuries your art, your music, literature and innovation have made the world a better and more beautiful place.

Here in the United States our own communities have been enhanced by the contributions of Iranian Americans. We know that you are a great civilization, and your accomplishments have earned the respect of the United States and the world.

For nearly three decades relations between our nations have been strained. But at this holiday we are reminded of the common humanity that binds us together. Indeed, you will be celebrating your New Year in much the same way that we Americans mark our holidays - by gathering with friends and family, exchanging gifts and stories, and looking to the future with a renewed sense of hope.

Within these celebrations lies the promise of a new day, the promise of opportunity for our children, security for our families, progress for our communities, and peace between nations. Those are shared hopes, those are common dreams.

So in this season of new beginnings I would like to speak clearly to Iran’s leaders. We have serious differences that have grown over time. My administration is now committed to diplomacy that addresses the full range of issues before us, and to pursuing constructive ties among the United States, Iran and the international community. This process will not be advanced by threats. We seek instead engagement that is honest and grounded in mutual respect.

You, too, have a choice. The United States wants the Islamic Republic of Iran to take its rightful place in the community of nations. You have that right - but it comes with real responsibilities, and that place cannot be reached through terror or arms, but rather through peaceful actions that demonstrate the true greatness of the Iranian people and civilization. And the measure of that greatness is not the capacity to destroy, it is your demonstrated ability to build and create.

So on the occasion of your New Year, I want you, the people and leaders of Iran, to understand the future that we seek. It’s a future with renewed exchanges among our people, and greater opportunities for partnership and commerce. It’s a future where the old divisions are overcome, where you and all of your neighbors and the wider world can live in greater security and greater peace.

I know that this won’t be reached easily. There are those who insist that we be defined by our differences. But let us remember the words that were written by the poet Saadi, so many years ago: “The children of Adam are limbs to each other, having been created of one essence.”

With the coming of a new season, we’re reminded of this precious humanity that we all share. And we can once again call upon this spirit as we seek the promise of a new beginning.

Thank you, and Eid-eh Shoma Mobarak.

The mullahs are laughing today, knowing that Barack Obama will do nothing to stop them from gaining the ultimate weapon. This isn’t just ill-advised, it’s disastrous. Barack Obama just hung a huge “Kick Me” sign on America’s back.

Iran - not unclenching fists at all!

'"We welcome the wish of the president of the United States to put away past differences," Ali Akbar Javanfekr, Mr Ahmadinejad's press advisor was quoted as saying by the AFP news agency.
"But the way to do that is not by Iran forgetting the previous hostile and aggressive attitude of the United States. The American administration has to recognise its past mistakes and repair them as a way to put away the differences."
He said Iran would not forget the role the US played when Mohammad Mossadeq, the former prime minister, was overthrown in a coup in 1953. Nor would it forget the 1988 shooting down of an Iranian passenger plane by a US warship in which all 290 people aboard were killed.
He added that Tehran would also remember America’s support for Saddam Hussein during the Iran-Iraq war in the 1980s, the sanctions it levied against Iran and its support for Iran’s main militant opposition group, the People’s Mujahideen of Iran.
"But this attitude of the United States did not weaken us and now the Islamic Republic of Iran is very strong in the world," he said. "The only source of instability in the region is the American military presence in Iraq and Afghanistan." '

[Link: www.timesonline.co.uk...]

So why didn't you apologise for all that already, PB0?

36 alan2  Fri, Mar 20, 2009 8:44:23am

Hey, Mr. President: I'm so glad you're the worldly cosmopolitan leader who understands the rest of the world that I thought you were.

Imagine if we had elected McCain/Palin - Palin could have not realized that showing weakness to a culture based on the fear/shame dynamic would be like a red-flag in front of a bull, or red meat in front of a lion. With her complete and utter lack of knowledge of the world outside of Alaska, she might have looked weak and pleading.

I'm so glad we go you instead.

Now I can rest easy.

Rightful place among nations? Would that include Israel, given that Iran was busy funding the Syrian nuclear program (which Israel happened to discover and destroy on Sept 6 a few years back). Iran continues its domestic nuclear program all while pushing forward with missile tech, supporting Hamas and Hizbullah, and seeks Israel's destruction. It also regularly calls for the death to America, but I guess that qualifies Iran as being among the rightful place among nations.

The NYT had an item about the Iranian blogger who died in jail. At the end of the article it noted that Iran was holding a reporter in jail too.

Two weeks ago, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said that the U.S. State Department had been working through intermediaries to win Ms. Saberi’s release, and an Iranian official said that Ms. Saberi would be released “within days.” Her father told Ms. Hilsum that if his daughter was not released by the start of the Iranian New Year’s celebrations this Friday evening, she is unlikely to leave Evin Prison before the end of the two-week holiday.

Why couldn't the President have said something like:

As a sign of your seriousness of a new relationship between our peoples, I call on you to release Roxana Saberi from the Evin prison as a good faith measure. Such a gesture would signal that your commitment to freedom and friendship is sincere.

Interesting read. Not particulary upbeat on this first day of spring.

Helicopter Ben Bernanke’s Federal Reserve is dropping trillions of fresh paper dollars on the world economy, the President of the United States is cracking jokes on late night comedy shows, his energy minister is threatening a trade war over carbon emissions, his treasury secretary is dithering over a banking reform program amid rising concerns over his competence and a monumentally dysfunctional U.S. Congress is launching another public jihad against corporations and bankers.

As an aghast world — from China to Chicago and Chihuahua — watches, the circus-like U.S. political system seems to be declining into near chaos. Through it all, stock and financial markets are paralyzed. The more the policy regime does, the worse the outlook gets. The multi-ringed spectacle raises a disturbing question in many minds: Is this the end of America?

We know that you are a great civilization, and your accomplishments have earned the respect of the United States and the world.

No they haven't.

For nearly three decades relations between our nations have been strained.

That will happen when one nation takes and holds hostages from the other.

Within these celebrations lies the promise of a new day, the promise of opportunity for our children, security for our families, progress for our communities, and peace between nations. Those are shared hopes, those are common dreams.

No they are not. Iran doesn't care about progress or peace, unless it is through total domination. As for Their children and families, I don't know that they even really care about them, except for how they can be used to further their cause.

It’s a future where the old divisions are overcome, where you and all of your neighbors and the wider world can live in greater security and greater peace.

"...A future without an Israel and where America gets down on it's knees before you."

There are those who insist that we be defined by our differences.

Anyone have a copy of Bush's Nowruz greeting?

Presidential Message: Nowruz

I send greetings to Iranian Americans observing Nowruz.

During Nowruz, people of Iranian descent celebrate the arrival of spring, a season of rebirth. This joyous occasion provides an opportunity for Persians to cherish their rich heritage and enjoy the company of family and friends in anticipation of happiness and blessings in the year ahead.

This year's observance comes during a challenging time for our Nation and the world. As the international community works to face great challenges and embrace important opportunities, America remains committed to peace, justice, and opportunity for all people. Throughout this time of renewal, we remain dedicated to bringing hope and freedom to troubled regions around the world.

Laura joins me in sending our best wishes for a joyous celebration to you, your families, and your relatives and friends in Iran.

It was a mistake to call them Iranian. They would always correct people, saying "No! We are not Iranian. We are Persian."

Maybe that has changed, but these folks were adamant at the time.

Domestic: Obama attempts to run his government as a populist, running "town hall" campaign-style events and appearing on television shows to "build support" for his programs instead of dealing directly with the people who must pass them.

Foreign: Obama attempts to run foreign policy as a populist, with TV addresses aimed at "the people" of foreign countries rather than recognizing that he must deal directly with the agendas and desires of the totalitarian heads of state who control what their people may do.

In short, he is avoiding his job and responsibilities in his domestic capacity, and trying to apply to foreign policy the very same end-run and responsibility-shirking tactics.

Addendum to Foreign:
He shows his utter lack of understanding of other peoples' cultures and political systems by this address. He shows a staggering arrogance because he seems to think that he's only got to speak and all fall for his silver tongue.
He ought to have a brief look into the reports during the Cold War - a stunt like that would have meant an immediate freeze on diplomatic relations, for 'interference into the inner affairs of a sovereign country'.
But PB0 is a-historical, and, I'm beginning to think, a-political, except for being a community organiser and member of the Chicago machine.

Obama and Israeli Leader Make Video Appeals to Iran

Invoking art, history and “the common humanity that binds us,” President Obama offered a “new day” in America’s relationship with Iran, using a videotaped message to make an unusual appeal directly to Iranians for a shift away from decades of confrontation.

The Israeli president, Shimon Peres, issued a similar videotaped outreach on Friday, appealing to “the noble Iranian people on behalf of the ancient Jewish people.”

Both messages suggested that there was a place for Iran as an equal in the international community. Mr. Obama warned Iran’s leaders that their country’s access to what he called its “rightful place in the community of nations” would not be advanced by threats or by “terror or arms, but rather through peaceful actions.”

[Link: www.nytimes.com...]

Israel decided to give Iran the rope to hang the Jewish State along with Obama.

THE REAL AIG SCANDAL
By Eliot Spitzer
Tuesday, March 17, 2009

"Everybody is rushing to condemn AIG's bonuses, but this simple scandal is obscuring the real disgrace at the insurance giant: Why are AIG's counterparties getting paid back in full, to the tune of tens of billions of taxpayer dollars?

For the answer to this question, we need to go back to the very first decision to bail out AIG, made, we are told, by then-Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson, then-New York Fed official Timothy Geithner, Goldman Sachs CEO Lloyd Blankfein, and Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke last fall. Post-Lehman's collapse, they feared a systemic failure could be triggered by AIG's inability to pay the counterparties to all the sophisticated instruments AIG had sold. And who were AIG's trading partners? No shock here: Goldman, Bank of America, Merrill Lynch, UBS, JPMorgan Chase, Morgan Stanley, Deutsche Bank, Barclays, and on it goes. So now we know for sure what we already surmised: The AIG bailout has been a way to hide an enormous second round of cash to the same group that had received TARP money already.

It all appears, once again, to be the same insiders protecting themselves against sharing the pain and risk of their own bad adventure. The payments to AIG's counterparties are justified with an appeal to the sanctity of contract. If AIG's contracts turned out to be shaky, the theory goes, then the whole edifice of the financial system would collapse.

But wait a moment, aren't we in the midst of reopening contracts all over the place to share the burden of this crisis? From raising taxes—income taxes to sales taxes—to properly reopening labor contracts, we are all being asked to pitch in and carry our share of the burden. Workers around the country are being asked to take pay cuts and accept shorter work weeks so that colleagues won't be laid off. Why can't Wall Street royalty shoulder some of the burden? Why did Goldman have to get back 100 cents on the dollar? Didn't we already give Goldman a $25 billion capital infusion, and aren't they sitting on more than $100 billion in cash? Haven't we been told recently that they are beginning to come back to fiscal stability? If that is so, couldn't they have accepted a discount, and couldn't they have agreed to certain conditions before the AIG dollars—that is, our dollars—flowed?

The appearance that this was all an inside job is overwhelming. AIG was nothing more than a conduit for huge capital flows to the same old suspects, with no reason or explanation.

So here are several questions that should be answered, in public, under oath, to clear the air:

---What was the precise conversation among Bernanke, Geithner, Paulson, and Blankfein that preceded the initial $80 billion grant?

---Was it already known who the counterparties were and what the exposure was for each of the counterparties?

---What did Goldman, and all the other counterparties, know about AIG's financial condition at the time they executed the swaps or other contracts? Had they done adequate due diligence to see whether they were buying real protection? And why shouldn't they bear a percentage of the risk of failure of their own counterparty?

---What is the deeper relationship between Goldman and AIG? Didn't they almost merge a few years ago but did not because Goldman couldn't get its arms around the black box that is AIG? If that is true, why should Goldman get bailed out? After all, they should have known as well as anybody that a big part of AIG's business model was not to pay on insurance it had issued.

---Why weren't the counterparties immediately and fully disclosed?

Failure to answer these questions will feed the populist rage that is metastasizing very quickly. And it will raise basic questions about the competence of those who are supposedly guiding this economic policy."

Charles - we should have a poll.

Barack Obama is best compared to the following historical figures:

Neville Chamberlain
Vidkun Quisling
Jimmy Carter
Roman Emperor Nero

He claims to be a multitasker, so add All Of The Above.

As an aghast world — from China to Chicago and Chihuahua — watches, the circus-like U.S. political system seems to be declining into near chaos. Through it all, stock and financial markets are paralyzed.

There was a small article in Forbes magazine, from a Mexican Economist: "What the United States is doing (in economic policy) is the same as giving sugar to a diabetic child."

Jeebus.

Maybe he should be apologizing to the actual Persians for how Carter fucked things up for them

I doubt that Carter even knew who Ahura Mazda was much less how Islam screwed the Zoroastrians, in particular, and the Persians in general. If Obama wants to do something useful he should spend the seven days of the old style Naw Ruz festival calling out Iran for their persecution of the Baha'is, Zoroastrians and ethnic minorities in the Islamic republic.

About Charles's warning- listen to the man, not just because it is his site, but because it makes logical sense-

I guess, because of my background, I do not really care what, if any religion, anyone is- his actions regarding other nations is driven by more than any one thing- there is a nexxus of factors at work here, the point is, his religious ties that were acknowledged were troubling- Wright and his ilk- documented, and addressed by dear leader himself, and for me, I do not need anything more than that to find him wanting as a leader.

Whatever else we do not know about his past, I am concerned enough about what IS known. . .and well, I am just a big believer in documentation and support for opinions that go beyond conspiracy theories- though I admit to being a total and UTTER X files fan. . .

OT: Galloway banned from The Great White North....
MP Galloway barred from Canada

Velshi said Galloway was deemed inadmissible to Canada due to national security concerns.

It was an "operational decision" by border security officials "based on a number of factors, not only those mentioned in the Sun piece," he said.

Such a decision could be overturned by ministerial order, but it is not warranted in this case, he said.

"We're going to uphold the law, not give special treatment to a street-corner Cromwell who brags about giving 'financial support' to Hamas, a terrorist organization banned in Canada," Velshi said.

Not really.

Ok - it was a bit tongue-in-cheek.
But think of it like this: Chamberlain was in an unprecedented situation.
PB0 - if he's actually looked into some history books - isn't
He has the choice of supporting Israel and telling Iran to eff off, instead of trying to snuggle up to them.
Chamberlain was trying to prevent another war in Europe by any means he could, 24 years after then end of WWI - something all involved remembered vividly.

PB0 has not the faintest idea about war - visiting the troups (once!) in Iraq is not = experience, and as moonbat he hates the military anyway.

Thanks Charles. I'm pretty tired of that one too. And for the record, being Muslim does not necessarily make one evil, or even prone to support radicalism. I know some Muslim Iranian-Americans, for example, who will fly into a rage about the mullahs who are destroying their religion whenever given half a chance. I would tend to agree with Daniel Pipes, who says "radical Islam is the problem, moderate Islam is the solution." Although I would modify that to "moderate Islam could be the solution." Because moderate Islam these days is being outspent and outshouted to the point of near-invisibility.

That being the case, I don't know why Obama keeps lying about the fact that he once was a Muslim, during his childhood. It's slimy and evasive, I think. Tell the truth. Own your past. Make of it whatever you want.

Declining to vote because you don't think McCain is conservative enough is like declining to have surgery to have your cancer removed, because you really wish somebody would come up with a way to do surgery without that week of painful recovery afterward.

McCain was the greater good and I voted for him.

I specifically entered the post 1-20-09 era with the attitude that I would try my hardest to believe that Obama would moderate his most radical ambitions. Within 2 months I have to conclude the opposite. I've never been a member of the Chicken Little Brigade but I may have to reconsider. I am afraid for our future.

I also was trying to hope he'd be better, but he has been worse than I expected. I thought he'd keep pushing Israel for "concessions", but it looks like he's going to insist on them recognizing a paliterrorist state:

One official told me it was just "childish". When Netanyahu comes for a visit, he might be asked to make a choice. The price for press availability with President Obama will be a commitment to say the words "two", "state" and "solution" in the same sentense.

But no words from the palis on stopping terrorism.

This of course, refers to the "People of the Book" which are Jews, Christians and Muslims. It excludes everyone else, including the Bahais and Zoroastrians in Iran. And anymore, its been argued by mullahs that Jews do not deserve that "People of the Book" label.

Well all, must go. The vet will be here in about an hour to put down our 13 year old dog, Falstaff.

We got Falstaff to be a pal for our other big dog, Henry. Over the years, Falstaff has proved to be one of the best dogs we've ever had. He never complained; he was always in a wonderful mood, with his tail wagging constantly.

When he was diagnosed with an inoperable tumor, we decided to let him live as long as he wasn't in pain. In the last couple of weeks, we've seen him lose his eyesight, his sense of smell, and - finally - his appetite. It's time.

Thank heavens we have a vet who is willing to come to the house. It would have broken my heart completely to have to take Falstaff away from the place he loves, and the companionship of his friend Henry, and his family.

Hope everyone here has an absolutely wonderful weekend!

There are two main differences between Bush’s Muslim outreach and Obama’s ambidirectional variety. First, as a man in whose life faith plays a central role, Bush could simply appeal to Muslims as members of an Abrahamic religion. He didn’t gild the lily, as Obama does, by condescending to one “great culture” after another, and citing the universal peace dreams of tyrants. Second, Bush never thought embracing the world’s peaceful Muslims was a substitute for threatening, or using, force against the world’s less peaceful Muslims. He knew that saying nice things was less important than doing necessary things. When it comes to Iran, there’s no indication that Obama sees a difference between the two.

It's not that I thought that, but I thought that he would be politically savvy enough not to go "all-in" in his first 60 days. Most savvy politicians try their damndest to guard their warehouse of political capital - Obama is betting it all on one roll of the dice.

Yes - and I am getting this feeling as if he's driven, as if he's trying to accomplish as much of his plans in the shortest possible time, I don't know why.

Maybe it's me, but I just can't seem to wrap my head around the sort of thinking that leads to this kind of approach. The administration has been dismissive of our allies (Britain, Poland, Czech Republic, Colombia), threatened trade wars with our largest creditor, yet sees fit to kowtow to an oppressive dictatorship he himself dismissed as "tiny" in the election. Why would you possibly reward your enemies and punish your friends?

I'm sorry to hear this. Dogs are such great companions.

Courage.

In an effort to find a way out of the hopeless view of the world that I've acquired since the election, I'm trying to set my sights on more realistic goals. In the 2008 election, about 80% of American Jews voted for this Jew-hating nightmare of a president -- the same percentage who voted for Kerry, a politician who wasn't exactly my favorite, but at least he wasn't a member of an anti-Jewish hate group.

If less than 80% of Jews vote for Obama in 2012, I'll consider that encouraging. If the number is still 80%, I'm not sure how I'll handle it.

But in the first government reaction to the video, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's press adviser said "minor changes will not end the differences" between Tehran and Washington.

"Obama has talked of change but has taken no practical measures to address America's past mistakes in Iran. If Mr. Obama takes concrete actions and makes fundamental changes in U.S. foreign policy toward other nations including Iran, the Iranian government and people will not turn their back on him," Ali Akbar Javanfekr told the Iranian state-run English-language Press TV satellite station.

Muslim does not equate to evil. Extreme Islam does and is.
I live in Kabul, like the people - dislike the extreme interpretation of Islam that some use as an excuse for gaining and keeping power.

Did I mention money? Should have. It all comes down to money and power it gives to those in control. The little people like us (US or Afghanistan) are SOL

Rush is really indignant this morning. Infuriated, actually -- he says he is trying to hold himself back from using profanities.

He has audio that proves that both Geithner and Congress were specifically told about the $162 mill in bonuses on March 3, well before everyone claims to have known about it. It's C-SPAN audio and that specific number came out in the hearing, with Tim Geithner listening (Geithner claims not to have known about these bonuses until March 10).

Rush also says he's saddened that Congress/the Senate, specifically the liberals with their anti-AIG theatre this week, have been so easily able to get away with playing the American people for fools.

Obama seems bound and determined to make sure that he carries that title for the 21st Century. What remains to be seen is will he be the last President of America.

Nothing is forever. America will one day fall.

But that doesn't mean it has to happen now .

18th Century? Maybe John Adams, but then again, there were only two, him and George Washington. Now, for the 19th Century, it would be James Buchanan. 20th, Jimmy Carter.

Recently turned down a chance to go to the Rothbury festival in Michigan this summer. I knew I would not be able to stomach the starry-eyed dipshit O-bots for three days.

But let us remember the words that were written by the poet Saadi, so many years ago: “The children of Adam are limbs to each other, having been created of one essence.”

The mullahs are laughing today, knowing that Barack Obama will do nothing to stop them from gaining the ultimate weapon. This isn’t just ill-advised, it’s disastrous. Barack Obama just hung a huge “Kick Me” sign on America’s back.

I am loath to close. We are not enemies, but friends. We must not be enemies. Though passion may have strained, it must not break our bonds of affection. The mystic chords of memory, stretching from every battle-field, and patriot grave, to every living heart and hearth-stone, all over this broad land, will yet swell the chorus of the Union, when again touched, as surely they will be, by the better angels of our nature.

Conciliatory words are not kick-me signs. At any rate, they don't automatically have to amount to that. Obama has tried to model himself on Lincoln. Them's big shoes to fill, and he can't do it right. Nobody on today's political horizon could, actually. But in trying, he may do a better job than he would if he did his own modest personal best.

Iran would do well to study these two speeches, and ponder the way the U.S. proceeded after hanging out that earlier kick me sign.

Bernanke defends big bank bailouts + stock market = Stock market is down...

[Link: money.cnn.com...]

Bernanke's announcement that the Fed was now preparing to buy hundreds of billions of dollars worth of US Treasuries has something to do with Wall Street's worsening mood. Precious metals blasted up after that announcement on Wednesday because this is obviously a major inflationary move, primarily meant to keep interest rates depressed. Also, I surmise that Wen Jinbao really rattled Bernanke's cage last week when he publicly announced China's worries about holding the better part of a trillion dollars in US Treasuries.

It's really breathtaking how things in Washington are going from bad to worse so fast.

I can't help but wondering if the attention given to the case of Roxana Saberi, of Iranian descent, would be increased if it were "Mary Swanson" of WASP descent sitting in an Iranian jail.

The problem I am seeing starting to come together is that the line delineating good from bad is getting much fuzzier. Some radicals soften the rhetoric and some "moderates" move into radical territory. When the truly "bad guys" start to sound like they are warm and fuzzy how do you tell the difference?

This is a valid question and one that I honestly don't know if anybody can answer other than God and he tends to remain silent on these issues. We have to find it out for ourselves. Indeed, who are the "good guys" and what can we do to make the "bad guys" listen to reason?

Obama wants to assuage the "good taliban" - that is an oxymoron if I ever heard one. Is he smokin some bad stuff or is he truly this naive?

More than 1,000 men, women and children have been hanged in Iran in the three years to last December.

In the first month of this year, 59 died, including a 35-year-old woman after 12 years in Rafsanjan prison. In December two men were stoned to death, a third being spared after he managed to clamber out of a pit where he was buried up to his shoulders.

The official 170 forms of punishment include limb amputation without anaesthetic and gouging out eyes with a spoon-like instrument.

I read a biography on General Wellington last year. Life would have been completely different had Wellington not been rejected for marriage early in his military career. After the rejection, he devoted himself to his career. He invented the Thin Red Line.

Erm - no - the 'Thin Red Line' was 'invented' by the Times war correspondent, W.H. Russell, at the Battle of Balaclava, Crimean War, 1854:
'The Times correspondent, W. H. Russell, who standing on the hills above could clearly see that nothing stood between the Russian cavalry and the defenceless British base but the "thin red streak tipped with a line of steel" of the 93rd. Condensed almost immediately into "The Thin Red Line", the phrase has survived to this day as the chosen symbol of everything for which The Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders believe themselves to stand.'

I didn't, not yet. Doesn't surprise me. The Islamists in the UK should pour it on these days and get even more belligerent. This will cause the BNP to swell. That swelling will cause British LLL/dhimmis to demonize the BNP even further, which in turn will embolden the Islamists to press their attack. Result: eventually there will be violent clashes, the British/EU police will crack down, the Islamist faction will get Pallywood-style press, and Britain will be sucked further down the totalitarian toilet.

That about right?

The solution, incidentally, is for the LLL/dhimmis to wake the f*** up and start firing into the Islamist ranks. That will upset the balance, create an anti-Islamist middle, and push both extremist camps to the margin.

But it won't happen. Why? because the LLL/dhimmi mentality gets too many strokes. They behave like sexual abuse victims. It's frightening, pathetic, and infuriating -- all at the same time.

I went into a public-'ouse to get a pint o' beer,
The publican 'e up an' sez, "We serve no red-coats here."
The girls be'ind the bar they laughed an' giggled fit to die,
I outs into the street again an' to myself sez I:
O it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "Tommy, go away";
But it's "Thank you, Mister Atkins", when the band begins to play,
The band begins to play, my boys, the band begins to play,
O it's "Thank you, Mister Atkins", when the band begins to play.

I went into a theatre as sober as could be,
They gave a drunk civilian room, but 'adn't none for me;
They sent me to the gallery or round the music-'alls,
But when it comes to fightin', Lord! they'll shove me in the stalls!
For it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "Tommy, wait outside";
But it's "Special train for Atkins" when the trooper's on the tide,
The troopship's on the tide, my boys, the troopship's on the tide,
O it's "Special train for Atkins" when the trooper's on the tide.

Yes, makin' mock o' uniforms that guard you while you sleep
Is cheaper than them uniforms, an' they're starvation cheap;
An' hustlin' drunken soldiers when they're goin' large a bit
Is five times better business than paradin' in full kit.
Then it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "Tommy, 'ow's yer soul?"
But it's "Thin red line of 'eroes" when the drums begin to roll,
The drums begin to roll, my boys, the drums begin to roll,
O it's "Thin red line of 'eroes" when the drums begin to roll.

We aren't no thin red 'eroes, nor we aren't no blackguards too,
But single men in barricks, most remarkable like you;
An' if sometimes our conduck isn't all your fancy paints,
Why, single men in barricks don't grow into plaster saints;
While it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "Tommy, fall be'ind",
But it's "Please to walk in front, sir", when there's trouble in the wind,
There's trouble in the wind, my boys, there's trouble in the wind,
O it's "Please to walk in front, sir", when there's trouble in the wind.

You talk o' better food for us, an' schools, an' fires, an' all:
We'll wait for extry rations if you treat us rational.
Don't mess about the cook-room slops, but prove it to our face
The Widow's Uniform is not the soldier-man's disgrace.
For it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "Chuck him out, the brute!"
But it's "Saviour of 'is country" when the guns begin to shoot;
An' it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' anything you please;
An' Tommy ain't a bloomin' fool -- you bet that Tommy sees!

Maybe this has been said but I can't read the whole thread to find out.

This is what America voted for. That's the downside of living in a democracy. If he got in because people didn't bother to vote, then we haven't done a good job making our fellow citizens understand why their vote is precious and it counts. If the government is corrupt, we vote them in office. Nancy Pelosi and John Murtha are our fault.
Maybe 4 or 8 years of living under this kind of terror directed at our population--terror of losing jobs, homes, liberty and lives will convince people to vote. If it's not too late by then.

613 Irenike  Fri, Mar 20, 2009 10:15:32am

Congratulations, America. We now have our first rock-star president. He is totally up to the task of acting like a celebrity. Today, he gets on a video, full of charm and conciliation, and offers a golden olive branch to Iran. Gosh, he even knows the name of the Muslim holiday they're celebrating. It's a good thing he told the world, in his first week as president, that he used to practice Islam. That really wowed 'em. Iran is going to totally change now.

The economy is in a serious tailspin. Inflation is here, and will only get worse as the Treasury printing presses work overtime. We're in a trade war with Mexico. The Congress has just passed retroactive laws to tax people they don't like at 90% (which happens to be a violation of the Constitution, but what the hell --- a minor detail).

And President Teleprompter? He has time to practice bowling. He has time to go on Jay Leno and impress everybody with what a great guy he is. What a leader! Why doesn't he take up the violin? This way, he'll have something to do while the US economy burns.

Haven't been one to give much credence to the apocalypse scenario that's being heard with increasing frequency.
BUT, that tiny "what if" lurking in the back ground is beginning to shoulder it's way to the front. Now, we're translating that what if to becoming as ready as possible to counteract the "what if". All the while saying no way can that happen in MY country.
Not a good thing to be thinking of, late at night.

TFK, I don't think he'll make any comment whatsoever. Despite what the left, media, and some of his won party did to him while he was in office, he never countered too strong.

It strikes me as his work ethic. I think he does this as a measure not to "sink to their level" by getting in the fray.

If you notice, the only presidents who thought they were important enough to say something after their term in office was finished, were Carter and Clinton.

That is actually one of the significant differences I have recognized between the parties when it comes to this particular example. It really strikes me as a dignity thing with him.

Sadly enough, I think you are correct, the mullahs are more than full of themselves. They are beaming. The one caveat in all of this, is that I truly feel in same strange way, (I admit, I could be totally wrong about it) but this just might give Israel a bargaining chip with status & recognition among her articulating states. As much as Israel does not want a true Iranian nuclear threat, Jordan, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, etc. fear this as well.

None of them have the balls to do it, nor the record of kicking the ass of the 3 hostile nations simutaneously.

Israel has, and they know it.

Again, I could be totally wrong here, but it has made me think.

Just because they are disabled doesn't mean they are not athletes. They ARE Olympians after all. I was telling Missus CN about that last night.

Totally agree!

They are athletes in the purest definition of the word. The disabled Olympians are truly inspirational and absolutely worthy of our respect, adulation, support and praise.
If the POTUS does not realize this he absolutely is an idiot worthy of our scorn and ridicule. In that he holds the highest office in the land, he has to understand that we expect him to conduct himself accordingly. He is rightly held to the highest expectations commensurate with his position. He represents all of us. So far, he has dropped the ball time after time, miserably.

I was under the impression that Wellington pursued a harrassment campaign against Napoleon's armies in Iberia - and never went toe-to-toe in a pitched battle - though still to great effect?

Harrassments - sieges - making use of the Spanish guerrilleros - all to excellent effect.
And lets not forget the excellent retreat to Portugal - something any good army leader should be capable of.
In the end he chased the French out of Spain.
Napoleon's msitake was to underestimate him because Wellington hadn't fought a pitched battle. He was not alone in this assessment.
However, 'modern' as Napoleon was - Wellington was more modern. He knew which tactics were going to be more successful in any given situation, and used them.
Oh - and his men adored him and would have followed him to hell.
Well - they did at Waterloo.

628 RedSoxNation  Fri, Mar 20, 2009 10:22:36am

Is he serious? Even if he thought this was a good idea, isn't there anyone in the White House who could educate him about what dictatorships do to adversaries that show weakness: the attack the advantage. In effective diplomacy involving dictators, you extend the olive branch after you get your adversary bent over a barrel. This is one of the central tenets in the book the "Case for Democracy"; dictators need confrontation with foreigners to maintain power, while democratic leaders need peace to maintain power (e.g. Churchill, Truman, Bush, etc.). This message is only going to give Iran an opportunity to create more friction with the United States. When Iran embarrasses President Obama in its reply, what the hell will President Obama then do? What can he do but look like a novice.

God help us. These people in the White House really are amateurs...

Went over to see any news about this at Al Jazeera. Again, the Iranian government responded using the same language as in pervious months. Ali Akbar Javanfekr, presidential advisor to Ahmadinejad said the following:

"We welcome the wish of the president of the United States to put away past differences," Ali Akbar Javanfekr told the AFP news agency.

"But the way to do that is not by Iran forgetting the previous hostile and aggressive attitude of the United States.

"The American administration has to recognise its past mistakes and repair them as a way to put away the differences."

Same old rhetoric.

Obama himself doesn't get that. "I won" proves that, the (D)s in congress are running roughshod over the Rule of Law, they too think we live in a democracy.

Democracy is 3 wolves and 2 sheep voting on whats for dinner.

Currently with Obama and the (D) Congress we are dangerously close to an Oligarchy.

Sorry I'm so late to this thread.
I've mentioned before out here how I had the distinct privilege of meeting one of the former Iranian hostages (I cannot reveal his name) in a group of six people all of whom he KNEW were friendly to him and would literally have done anything at all to help or protect him.
And yet, throughout the entire meeting - lasting over an hour, his entire body shook like a leaf in a light breeze. Every Single Day one of his captors would come in and put a pistol against the back of his blindfolded head and say "Is today the day?" and pull the trigger on the empty chamber so he just heard the metallic "click".
I read the transcription above and couldn't watch the video.
I can't imagine how badly this fellow - and his surviving fellow hostages - feel this day. I'd guess
"let down" by the President of the United States and indeed their whole country for electing him would be too weak a description by far.
President Obama, you may have won the election, but I know you're not that former hostage's President, nor are you mine, in my heart.
And while I know it's not my place to do so, I offer my heartfelt condolences and sympathies to all of those former hostages and to their families for the actions and words of Barack Hussein Obama this day.

Dang it. Now you are going to make me look it up. *sigh* I distinctly remember Wellington using a tactic while in India where he spread his troops in a 2-man-deep horseshoe formation. The troops would lay flat until the enemy was fully in the trap. He would order his troops to spring up and fire. It inflicted massive casualties. I'll have to look that up when I get home. I know the first use of the actual term Thin Red Line was in the Crimean War, but Wellington was revolutionary in his use of defensive tactics. To be continued when I can get that bio in front of me...

652 Ayatollah Ghilmeini  Fri, Mar 20, 2009 10:33:49am

Allah be praised we're going to crash!

Some 35 years ago, that was the caption in a National Lampoon cartoon called Son of God comics.

The greatest nation in the world is being run by fools and we are going to crash. The Golden Child's contemptible bowling comment on the Jay Leno show last night showed what he is made of.

In the history of US diplomacy, it is hard to find a more stupid, contemptibly stupid, doomed to failure, effort than Obama's reach-out to Iran. Anyone paying attention to the international news sees Iran and seven or eight other opponents of American leadership in the world working in concert with each otehr building weapons, armies, and alliances- all designed to bring this country down, down hard.

What exactly do we have to offer that the Ayatollahs don't already have or are not in the process of making? We're about to embark on the single greatest change in policy to a rogue state ever done. If there is any indication of any concern of what might happen, should these efforts fail, I am unable to detect them. I read a ton of news and journals every day and have seen nothing on the subject.

The only things you can give a fascist to make them happy are power and respectability. They love conquering new territory and threatening their neighbors; they love beating their people into submission; most of all, they love weapons which enable them to do this job in a better way and parading the fact of their power to their neighbors and people. With such folks, everything is a means to an end.

I've never seen a totalitarian government declare their territorial ambitions had been completely met, their borders were permanently fixed and they were downgrading their military capabilities, because they trusted in the goodwill of their neighbors and the international community to ensure the safety of their nation.

So either the Obama initiative is the most singularly cynical and pointless act of American diplomacy since FDR put Breckenridge Long in charge of Jewish refugees or Obama is the biggest fool who ever lived or Obama is the single greatest diplomatic genius the world has ever known, a new Metternich, who will transform the entire relationship between peoples and nations into a glorious new and exciting future free from war filled with great economic cooperation and prosperity for all. The way things look is he believes he is the third, while in truth he is the second. If he knowingly is the first, he is evil. This bus is heading off the cliff.

Because he is so confident in his abilities to transform the Iranian regime into a new and suddenly peaceful version of its old self, Obama wastes no time passing out parachutes or take any other rational precaution against what the certainty that Iran will exploit this situation to our great detriment.

What is the United States can do going to do if Iran does not negotiate in good faith and uses diplomacy solely to delay while they get the bomb? What is the backup plan? There is none. What happens to those whose lives and rights are at risk through this action?

Yesterday came the report that an Iranian blogger, died "tragically" after being imprisoned for insulting Iran's supreme leader. To even bring up the subject would do would be to insult our new friends. Yet the true nature of a government is what and how they punish. We are not perfect. But Iran's record is a dark chapter in human justice: they have crushes a boy's arm with a car, hangs gays from cranes and rapes dissident women in prison. What friendship can such a country offer us that is worth having? This leaves aside the thousands (yes I said thousands) of Americans they have murdered or been complicit in murdering over the years.

We are almost 100% certain Saad Bin Laden was in Iran until last year. There are reports his famous dad was too. We are extending to these criminals, the one thing that they want, just when they need it most. They are very unpopular with their people- the Iranian economy is a basket case. Why would we give these people any legitimacy. What government, other than North Korea, has a bigger lunatic than Ahmadinejad as their head?

Instead of reaching out to the Iranian people alone, who love our country and want good relations with us as free people, we are to their leaders/jailers.

The egomania of the president who believes his mere presence and words can transcend any totalitarian heart beggars the imagination. He should be fixing zoning deals in Chicago not leading the world.

And the price the Ayatollahs has already been told to them: the US will use Israel as Czechoslovakia 2.0. Obama is willing to negotiate any agreement detrimental to Israel's security. There are big signs and little signs all indicating that America's alliance with Israel isn't just an inconvenience, it's over. From diplomatic overtures to Hamas to the complete sellout of Lebanon's government to Iran's proxy, Hezbollah to no so secret outreach to Hamas, it is clear Israel is to be the sacrificial lamb. There is a certain swagger, to Israel's enemies in the hallways foreign-policy, in academe and at State: the daggers are out and the worst anti-Semite sons a bitches are looking for a Jew to put their dagger in.

The video of the protest in a French supermarket is disturbingly parallel to images from the 1930s. Just as Jews were driven from European universities by pro-Hitler factions desiring to impose his racial theories even before he arrived with military force, defenseless Jewish origin products are singled out, ruthlessly "selected" and carried away to their doomed fate. First they came for the grocery items, then they came for me. But they are coming. It is in the air.

Instead of rewarding people for bad behavior, you are supposed to punish it. Especially if you don't want the behavior repeated. In Caracas, Hezbollah has set up a major base for operations throughout the Americas, we live in an age where murderers get embassies.

The Golden Child is oblivious to all. Certain of victory and undaunted by the consequences that he is so very, very wrong. Wrong about his abilities. Wrong about his policies. Wrong in the ideas that spawned those policies.

As he weakens our military, with chopped down budgets for a peace that exists only in the minds of the west's leftmost thinkers, the coming disaster looms ever larger and, when it comes, it will be terrible to behold.

re: #651 DisturbedEma
As I recall it, the "rescue mission" was one that was opposed by the entire Joint Chiefs of Staff.
By the time Carter got around to it, the Iranian "students" had taken the hostages from the (former) American Embassy where they had all been held, and moved them in small groups to numerous locations within the City of Teheran (then with a population of over One Million) and we didn't know WHERE the hostages were being held. Sending in Delta Force (special operations troops) in those circumstances was worse than foolish. And, iirc, President Carter was advised to do this by his National Security Advisor Zbigniew Brzezinski (who, btw, is on Obama's unofficial international security team) but it was done purely for political reasons, IMO, since Carter was losing to Ronald Reagan in the polls at the time (for the 1980 election) and the polls showed that Carter's biggest political problem was the hostages in Iran.
The mission failed when first one helicopter was forced to turn back because of mechanical difficulties and once they reached the desert region of Iran, there was a collision on the ground by two of the three helicopters that had made it to Iran and a lot of US troops lost their lives because of it. And, of course, the hostage rescue mission was scratched.

Oh, look...Reuters is passing along lies from the Mexican government and Holder/Napolitano as facts:

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. and Mexican security officials will strategize next month on fighting the arms trade fueling Mexico's bloody drug war, but a U.S. ban on assault rifles favored by the traffickers will not be on the agenda.

U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder and Homeland Security Janet Napolitano announced plans this week to meet their Mexican counterparts -- Attorney General Eduardo Medina and Interior Minister Fernando Francisco Gomez Mont -- at an arms trafficking conference in Cuernavaca, Mexico in early April.

Napolitano told reporters on Thursday the officials will discuss ways of fighting the huge flow of weapons from the United States into Mexico, where they are used by drug gangs in turf battles that killed 6,000 people last year.

To Mexico's great unease, the widely available U.S. guns are often the merchandise carried back along smuggling routes for illegal drugs coming into the United States.

Oddly enough, there is absolutely no evidence to support these claims. The Mexican government makes them, and their lackeys in Washington just lap them up.

Every news story I've read on the violence in northern Mexico includes references to fully automatic weapons, grenades, RPGs, etc.

I've been to a lot of gun shows and stores in my life, but I've never once seen any of those items for sale.

The drug cartels are getting their weapons from Central America, as well as direct from the source in China.

I'm sure the Mullahs are preparing a special message for us in return. I don't think it will be as obsequious as Obama's was, but it will certainly get our undivided attention.

There's a difference? If Obama had even worked for a few months in a regular job, as a server in a restaurant or something while in school like normal people have done at some point in time, this might not be happening.

re: #537 lostlakehiker

Conciliatory words are not kick-me signs. At any rate, they don't automatically have to amount to that. Obama has tried to model himself on Lincoln. Them's big shoes to fill, and he can't do it right. Nobody on today's political horizon could, actually. But in trying, he may do a better job than he would if he did his own modest personal best.

Iran would do well to study these two speeches, and ponder the way the U.S. proceeded after hanging out that earlier kick me sign.

I guess they don't have to amount to that, but do they really amount to anything else here? What's the point of taking up such a repentant tone and 'reaching out' to Iran's Islamic tyrants if not to signal a coming wave of American obeisance? Lincoln didn't "reach out" to the preeminent evil facing the Union -- the slave-based Confederacy -- instead he fought it into annihilation and imposed a new, more decent order upon the South. Lincoln had incredible guts and moral commitment -- two qualities that seem more distant from the current President.

I don't want to be there when the mushroom cloud goes up. O'bomd-a has already shown great cowardice to our enemies. He is only making them more aggressive.

Yes I'm waiting for the apology from Tehran for the 'strained relations' of the 444 days of hostage taking, the 'strained relations' from the blowing up of the Marine Barracks in Lebanon in 1983, the 'strained relations' of blowing up the Jewish Centre in Argentina, the 'strained relations' caused by the murder of Hariri a couple of years ago, the 'strained relations' of Iranians calling the Jewish State a cancer, and Jews, pigs and monkeys, and imagining a world without Israel, but that ain't gonna happen as long as Obama is President.
Typical lib without an ounce of common sense in his body.

690 Emerald  Fri, Mar 20, 2009 2:51:44pm

Oh, yeah. Carter. There are a lot of parallels between the two, but there are some big differences, too. For all the stupidity of some of his decisions, Carter is not dumb; he graduated from the Naval Academy. He was successful in business before going into politics. He had experience before going to the White House. He was a failure as a president and caused lasting problems, but I'd say it came from his political outlook, not a lack of qualifications or intelligence. He had no confidence in the country or its citizens, so he didn't think we'd be able to solve problems.

Also, as far as I can remember, there wasn't a huge backlash against Carter almost immediately as he took office. Democrats in Congress supported him for a long time. I don't think there was even a serious attempt to get another candidate to run against Reagan. There weren't party operatives going around in a state of shock at the things he said and did.

Obama can't say that. There have been plenty of posts here basically about how scared the establishment is with what they got into the White House. The whole rush to tax the AIG bonuses shows that the current Congress recognizes they are in trouble. I don't think they're going to blindly support future Obama plans. His track record is already dismal, and he's been in office just a few months.

It's not a big stretch until the Democrat Party tries to rein him in. There are going to be a lot of nervous incumbents, and the more Obama bumbles between now and the election, the worse it's going to get for them. Unlike Carter, the Democrats are going to be actively trying to stop him from doing any more stupid stuff. Unfortunately, that's going to be a very, very uphill battle for them.

694 Eclectic Infidel  Fri, Mar 20, 2009 3:18:21pm

A couple liberal democrat friends of mine have already emailed me a copy of this video. They are dee-lighted, to say the least. One friend said that "this proves that Obama will be a great President because he knows how to bring people together!" The other one simply called President Obama, "the President of peace..."

If I had the audacity to write either back and express concern for Iran's nuke program or question just how happy happy joy joy Obama will be when the mullahs target Israel for mass destruction. I know from experience that I'd be greeted with hostility.

Ah, very cute. My girl kitty just batted at the screen with her paw.

I'm sorry, but the phrase "Giant Douchebag" comes to mind.
I completely agree with the "kick me" sign on our backs. What we (the people of America) must understand is that the racist bastards in power in Iran DO have a history of promoting violence against Israeli and American assets and, as such, cannot be allowed to gain a nuclear weapon.

This is so outrageous that I'm only going to say a couple of things. Osama bin Obama reminds me of the classic "wife beater". He's the consumate "nice guy" to all of the pricks on the street and then goes home and abuses his wife (in this case the U.S.). While this metaphor may seem odd, the psychopathology is the same.

MOnths ago I read an article in a little Philly weekly paper about Obama. And it quoted him as saying: "All I have to do in most cases is just talk to people and 95% of the time we can come to an agreement."

Because he is a gifted scam artist, and has had only dumb Chicagoan to practice on, he has come to believe that he really can talk anyone into anything.

Ha, ha, you're right. Chicago is a nice place with nice people, despite our terrible reputation. Chicago is NOT Iran. Obama is way over his head.

703 Sacred Plants  Sat, Mar 21, 2009 1:58:30am

President Obama can afford to play the gracious self-deprecating diplomat, because the oil oligarchs know very well that if their spoiled kids kill him, they will wreck his vain party and trigger a regime change to the party with less qualms. Kick me, I am the lure of a predator that will crush you. Are you sure you control the instincts of your lackeys, Mr. Mullah?
