There must have been severe lingering effects because the Times has been bombing on a consistent basis for many years now.

Union terrrorists? Tell us more?!
I haven’t finished the book yet. But it is interesting to note that at the time the LA Times was a vehemently anti-union paper. Its owner, Harrison G. Otis, did indeed engage in anti-union abuses. The Labor movement however, had gone on a bombing spree and the bombing of the LA Times building on 10/1/1910 left 21 people dead. In just getting to the arrest of the McNamara brothers, who planned and carried out the bombing. Also of note is that their trial Attorney is a principal character in the book. You all know at least his name from another famous case: Clarence Darrow.

Obama criticizes Cheney’s approach to terrorism in ‘60 Minutes’ interview
President Obama, rejecting former Vice President Dick Cheney’s contention that he has put the nation at greater risk of terrorism, suggests in a “60 Minutes” interview that the previous administration’s stance was an “advertisement for anti-American sentiment.”
“How many terrorists have actually been brought to justice under the philosophy that is being promoted by Vice President Cheney?” Obama asks. “It hasn’t made us safer. What it has been is a great advertisement for anti-American sentiment.”

I try to be diligent about answering back but lots of times I have to walk away after a post and by the time I get back the thread’s moved on by hundreds of comments. I try to scan through but I’m sure I miss stuff.
Either way, I’m ashamed to admit that my computer skills are pretty basic and I’m just wondering if there’s something simple already out there that I’m missing or if I’m asking for something that’s not practical to implement.

INTERVIEW WITH HOMELAND SECURITY SECRETARY JANET NAPOLITANO
Janet Napolitano, 51, is President Obama’s new Homeland Security Secretary. She spoke with SPIEGEL about immigration, the continued threat of terrorism and the changing tone in Washington.
SPIEGEL: Madame Secretary, in your first testimony to the US Congress as Homeland Security Secretary you never mentioned the word “terrorism.” Does Islamist terrorism suddenly no longer pose a threat to your country?
Napolitano: Of course it does. I presume there is always a threat from terrorism. In my speech, although I did not use the word “terrorism,” I referred to “man-caused” disasters. That is perhaps only a nuance, but it demonstrates that we want to move away from the politics of fear toward a policy of being prepared for all risks that can occur.

The shooting incident in Oakland has now become a massacre of policemen: at least three are dead, and a fourth is either already dead too or just barely hanging on. The perp was also killed. He shot with a submachine gun at a SWAT team through a closed closet door where he was hiding out. The injured officers shot back through the door and killed the demonic scumbag.
But get this: in the NY Times article about the incident, at the very end, they report:
On Saturday, people lingered at the scene of the traffic-stop shooting. About 20 bystanders taunted the police.
Taunting the police after they’ve been massacred?!?!? There is a deep, deep social sickness in Oakland. One can only imagine what they were saying. “You had it coming, you motherf*ckers! This is just the beginning! It’s payback time for Oscar!” etc.

Oakland police have just about the hardest job in America. The anti-police bias goes all the way to the top. The outgoing police chief in fact RESIGNED in a huff after the freakin’ City Council forced 8 officers to be fired after a shyster ambulance-chasing lawyer falsely accused them of doling the paperwork wrong for a search warrant. The City Council lambasted the officers in public, before there was any trial or proof. The chief said, basically — I’m outta here. You people are nuts. You want a police chief? Fuck. I don’t understand how ANYONE can be a cop in Oakland. I know if I were one, I’d quit cause I don’t think I could bring myself to answer a call for help. Just couldn’t effin’ do it.
Friend of mine quit the NYFD when the Harlem riots erupted in 1968 or 1969, cause whenever they’d try to get to a fire scene they were pelted with rocks and bottles and frequently shot at.
I just couldn’t do that job I’m afraid.
I’m so sorry to hear about those officers, but I’ll bet you right now that AG Holder will say that’s why we have to ban assualt rifles, so CROOKS won’t get ‘em and massacre cops.
Oh and maybe he’ll say someting decent about those poor cops, if he has the time.

I can’t express my sorrow enough. I’ve always been a friend to the police and this saddens me deeply.
As for these bystanders….if I’m not mistaken Berkeley is close by as well. Isn’t berkeley where the city council forbade the flying of the american flag on Fire department trucks shortly after 9-11? And Frisco speaks for itself. I know there’s a sickness through all the country but it seems to be particularly virulent in the Bay Area.
Too bad these protesters can’t be put on some kind of no-response list so that next time theyr’e in trouble and call for the police, nobody comes. I even have a motto…’What if you called 9-11 and nobody came?’

I hold organizations such as this one responsible for the loss of those brave officers: Oakland-based CAPE, aka Coalition Against Police Executioners, and what they mean is that COPS are the “executioners” of poor innocent victims such as Oscar Grant. Their website has a “video tribute” to Grant — this group and many others like it exist for the sheer purpose of whipping the flames of anti-cop hatred.
Get that attitude raging throughout a city … get assholes who want to play “hero” by killing cops … and this is what happens.

Zombie? Is this story bothering you?
The motorcycle cops would have been wearing vests, and the SWAT folks would have been more heavily armored than that.
You cite the article as mentioning a sub-machine gun. That fires a pistol round, and the perp was firing 1) at motorcycle cops from his car (? article did not make that clear to me) and 2) through a closed closet door.

Well the story that zombie linked to indicated that the two motorcycle cops were bleeding from the head. Not enough armour on the head to protect from any amount of bullets. Most bullet resistant vests only cover the torso, and any other armour is at a minimum. So the perp firing from the closet could have hit the legs and maybe hit some serious arteries in the lower regions. Only way I could see it happening.

OAKLAND — In the most horrific day of Oakland Police Department history, three police sergeants were shot to death by the same gunman within two hours of each other. A fourth officer involved in a second shooting with the suspect also was wounded and is in extremely critical condition Saturday night. The three veteran officers killed were all sergeants: Erv Romans, 43, , Dan Sakai, 35, and Mark Dunakin, 41,, police said. This was the first time that any sergeants in the department have been slain. Officer John Hege, 41, of Concord is on life support at Highland Hospital. A fifth officer was grazed by a bullet. He was treated and released from the hospital.
The suspect is identified as Lovell
Mixon, 27, of Oakland who was on parole for assault with a deadly weapon, has not been released, police said. He had no-bail warrant for her arrest for violating parole. He has prior convictions in Alameda County for grand theft and possession of marijuana.
The incident represents the highest number of police officers ever killed in the line duty on the same day in Oakland.
“This is just unbelievable, everyone is in shock,” said one Oakland police sergeant.
The first shooting happened in the 7400 block of MacArthur Boulevard about 1:16 p.m. when two motorcycle officers were shot to death during a traffic stop. What led to the shooting was not immediately known.
A man, who did not want be identified, said he heard gunshots and saw the officers laying on roadway.
“I went over to one officer and saw he was bleeding from his helmet pretty bad,” he said. “The other officer was laying motionless.”
He said the officer laying near a car had two gun shot bullets near in his face. One bullet was lodged in his jaw and the other in his neck. The man proceeded to give the officer CPR until other police arrived, he said.
Dozens of Oakland police, California Highway Patrol officers and Alameda County sheriff deputies had cordoned off stretches of blocks around 73rd and 74th Avenues and MacArthur Boulevard before learning information that the suspect was holed up in an apartment around the corner on 74th Avenue. Two hours later SWAT officers were wounded and killed in an exchange of gunfire while trying to arrest the suspect holed up in an apartment a block away from the first shooting.
No other word or information I know about this.

He’s the CA attorney general. He likes doing things like filing suit against car manufacturers for pollution.
He wants to run for governor again. As if the diamond lane and bike lanes weren’t idiotic legacy enough for any one man.
To be absolutely fair, Jerry tried to get Oakland on something resembling an even keel. He was hamstrung by his pc thinking, and by the fact that Oakland’s government makes San Francisco’s look sane - look at the time the Oakland City Council wanted to outlaw smoking in private residences (condos downtown - I didn’t follow it all that closely, but it was loony). But at least Jerry had some concept that socializing everything doesn’t work. He boosted charter schools (there are some problems with those in Oakland, which I know a bit more about than I’m really happy with, but anything’s better than Oakland’s public schools), and he promoted businesses and other revenue generating activities.
Dellums is destroying even the baby steps Brown made toward Oakland not being a basket case.

re: #164 Chicken Kiev
I hold organizations such as this one responsible for the loss of those brave officers: Oakland-based CAPE, aka Coalition Against Police Executioners, and what they mean is that COPS are the “executioners” of poor innocent victims such as Oscar Grant. Their website has a “video tribute” to Grant — this group and many others like it exist for the sheer purpose of whipping the flames of anti-cop hatred.
Get that attitude raging throughout a city … get assholes who want to play “hero” by killing cops … and this is what happens.
Thanks, radicals. This is on YOU.
Precisely! That was the whole reason for the (ANSWER-directed) Oscar Grant riots in the first place — to incite anti-police violence.

re: #171 Syrah
Syrah, while I strongly feel as you do, we both know that most of the people in Oakland woudn’t shoot a cop and we couldn’t leave them behind in an Escape from NewYork Scenario. That IS part of the problem here - there were ONLY 20 or so bystanders cheering the massacre of the cops - and I know, they should all have been shot themselves - but they won’t be the only ones hurt if Oakland goes the way of Escape from NY nor will they be the only ones who will truly suffer if police don’t respond to emergency calls for assistance. There really isn’t any easy answer - except that maybe groups who cheer on and lead and provide assistance to these scumbags ought to be locked up for a couple of nights with their brothers and sisters and then see if they’ve had a change of heart when they’re released.

Three of the four dead officers were sergeants. This investigation will take a few days to sort out. He has prior convictions in Alameda County for grand theft and possession of marijuana.

There is something wrong with this story. How the hell are these three cops dead? Where were they struck? I don’t understand this. Is there any further clarification?
At least two of the cops were shot in the head. Vests wouldn’t have helped them.

I was trying to say that I think that I could see anti-cop sentiment of the sort in Oakland happening in Memphis, some of it legitimate and some of it drummed up by race hustlers given the right circumstances.

Dianna - what are the “flats of Oakland”? Like the Harlem of NYC or parts of South Central LA?
OK, Oakland starts on the edge of San Francisco Bay. Picture the Bay Bridge as running up the center of a bulge, with the docks stretching to either side for about half a mile up the sides. Between the docks and the really massive rail yards, there’s about a mile and a half to two miles of area that’s essentially empty of people.
Then you get “public housing”, warehouses, and some old neighborhoods, the Coliseum (ground zero of the drug wars), and the airport down on flat ground. That’s the flats, and it’s a war zone. I looked at a number of $1 houses there, back in the early 90’s; I’m pretty calm about bad neighborhoods, but even I wouldn’t live there. Even with a bulletproof vest and a machine gun nest on the roof.

Police have to be portrayed in our culture as heroes again.
So much of their portrayal in the rap-videos, TV-shows, movies and smear journalism make them out to monsters and or buffoons.
Its insidious. Most of what people think they know about cops comes from the media. Some of it is right, most of it is wrong.

Haven’t been on a thread with you for a while but I got your reply and sent a “thank you - let me know if I can help” message back but it got rejected by the host of zombietime. Tried a couple more times and they still got kicked back (this was a couple of weeks back). Not sure why but I thought I’d let you know.
Thanks. There was a glitch in the email server a few weeks back. I think it’s back up and running now.

I may report frequently on events in Berkeley, but that doesn’t mean I actually live there! It’s just the place where all the juicy stuff happens. Nothing interesting ever happens in _______.
Note that I said “somewhere close.”
In the Bay Area, that means anywhere BART can take you!

Now that just HAS to be grounds for removal from office. He ran in a district 3000 miles away from where he lived!

Congress didn’t have to do anything back then. Ed Meese was AG at the time, couldn’t have had her indicted?

Make a tourist gallery part of the renovation. The tourists would get to throw unplesant things at the convicts. Burns off public anger and makes the inmates miserable. win-win.

Plunkett at least understood that things have to work. Honest graft, as annoying as it is to those of us who understand how it undermines society, at least gets the freakin’ potholes fixed.
Tammany lasted as long as it did because it understood that basic services had to be provided, and loyalty had to be rewarded. The current system, as practiced by Democrat mayors and City Councils, actually punishes its most loyal voters.

By the way, Oakland Mayor Ron Dellums’s son happens to be a murderer:
Michael Dellums, the son of Oakland Mayor Ron Dellums, was denied parole today for his second-degree murder conviction for killing a reputed drug dealer in Oakland in 1979….
According to a letter that Dr. David Grubb wrote to a judge on Aug. 9, 1979, Ron Dellums “has not been a major figure in Michael’s life.”
Grubb said Dellums “began to get into legal trouble at an early age” and was a truant from school.
Grubb said Dellums himself estimated that he committed more than 100 burglaries in the North Oakland area.
Grubb said Dellums also was convicted of malicious mischief, burglary, multiple purse snatchings, armed robbery, petty and grand theft and auto theft.

Because they don’t care. He’s 27 which means his adult life started 8 to 9 years ago. They used to put people in jail for assault with a deadly weapon for 10 years in older times. Which means like you said, “why was he on the streets?”

Pretty near all of the problems we see today are due to one simple shift — from a culture/society/moral code based on the enlightenment, to one based on entitlement.
Entitlement is the worst mind cancer yet conceived. Easily spread, it brings irresponsibility, bitterness, smugness, and resentment along as coattail infections. Cripples all it touches.
Until America purges the entitlement mentality from its schools, media, and even some churches, the decay will continue.

The conflict of visions of the world between them and us is so great that when we talk to them, we may be using the same words, but they mean different things.

Hollowed out by entitlement.
No need to build, to preserve, protect, or defend. You’re already entitled to the good things that flow from civilization! No need to learn, to work… that’s not part of the entitlement equation… that’s for the other guy to worry about. Just cash in your victim or privilege chips, and get your fair share!
