New Mexico Stealth Creationism Bill Dies, No One Mourns

Science • Views: 2,113

As we’ve noted previously, New Mexico is one of several states in which Republican politicians have introduced bills intended to sneak the teaching of creationism into science classes, under the deceptive mantle of “academic freedom.” This multi-state effort is based on a Discovery Institute “model bill,” and many of the bills simply copy and paste the language from the Discovery Institute version.

Dave Thomas at Panda’s Thumb reports that the New Mexico bill has now died without ever being heard by committee, an ignominious end to a dishonest piece of creationist legislation: Another Discovery Institute Bill Fails…

Thomas also points out the promotional website used by New Mexico anti-evolutionists: Origins Education.

The site features a picture of an orangutan holding a sign (get it?), and one of those deceptive, out-of-context quotes that creationists dearly love, attempting to make it seem as if Charles Darwin himself doubted the truth of evolution in The Origin of Species:

For I am well aware that scarcely a single point is discussed in this volume on which facts cannot be adduced, often apparently leading to conclusions directly opposite to those at which I have arrived. A fair result can be obtained only by fully stating and balancing the facts and arguments on both sides of each question; and this is here impossible.

The complete quote, in context, shows that Darwin’s real point was that he couldn’t list all the facts that support the theory of evolution, in an abstract of what was intended to be a much larger work.

This Abstract, which I now publish, must necessarily be imperfect. I cannot here give references and authorities for my several statements; and I must trust to the reader reposing some confidence in my accuracy. No doubt errors will have crept in, though I hope I have always been cautious in trusting to good authorities alone. I can here give only the general conclusions at which I have arrived, with a few facts in illustration, but which, I hope, in most cases will suffice. No one can feel more sensible than I do of the necessity of hereafter publishing in detail all the facts, with references, on which my conclusions have been grounded; and I hope in a future work to do this.

Once again, we see that creationists are completely shameless about lying to promote their pseudo-scientific hooey.

What's amazing is the copy/paste job these lawmakers did on their bills. Straight from the DI. The DI's not willing to suffer another Dover, where the school board went off script. This copy/paste ensures they'll get the battle they (think) want when this goes to the courts.

The surest way to spot a dishonest argument is to count up the number of times the ones making it quote their bete' noire(s) out of context to deliberately distort their arguments.

The fact that IDiots do it with even greater frequency that UFOnuts tells you all you need to know about their intellectual honesty. Sort of like Truthers.

In fact, it could be argued that the desperate and dishonest ploys used by such individuals to gain support indicates that they either;

A. Have so little faith in their "conclusions" that they will resort to any underhanded trick to win, and/or

B. Don't actually believe their own dogmas at all, but are motivated purely by the desire to use them as clubs to belabor others into paying attention to them, and even making others submit to them.

These lots don't need political power or "openness in government".

They need to grow up.

(Sorry, W. F. Buckley, but he is just that. Pompous, to boot.)

Bonfire of the Inanities by Christopher Buckley

I voted for Barack Obama largely on the basis of his temperament, which I thought superior. He is only 47 years old, but to me seemed older than that: a man of precocious aspect and judgment. In the French wording, un homme sérieux.

snip

But it is also appalling that the US Congress, in a fine foam of pique, should attempt to solve the problem by passing, willy-nilly, a confiscatory tax bill that aims to reduce such payments to a net of 10 percent. I am no homme sérieux when it comes to financial policy, but I know the maxim that “bad cases make bad law.”

snip

The larger point is that we are in danger of becoming distracted by our own outrage. It is fine to burn a witch every now and then, and I would gladly supply some good, dry kindling myself at the base of these stakes, but let’s get it over with and move on. There are larger conflagrations burning, and they will consume us all unless we begin to calm down and focus. And that focus should come from on high.

It’s your legacy, sir, and let’s not hear any more about “inheriting the crisis.” You asked for the job.

Yes- we can believe in both- it's called Theistic Evolution.

But the problem is that God falls outside of what science deals with, so no- it's not appropriate for science class. Probably best to have the kids discuss it with their parents and/or pastor/priest/minister/rabbi.

Its not rage at anyone who has faith, religion in the class room is a very bad idea.
If we let in one religion into the curriculum, we have to let them all in.
That's not the only reason, faith is just that faith, if its needed to be taught as science, then its a very fragile faith.

I apologize for the use of the word rage. I love the LGF site but I see daily, with sometimes harsh comments (creation folks = code pinkers)....

Excuse me, but you are dropping credibility quickly. Creationists are not called "code pinkers" here daily. We don't even get creationism threads daily.

If there are harsh comments about creationists at this blog it's because like the islamists, we're not interested in them pushing their ideas about religion down our throats, nor our children's. Any over the top comments are deleted.

As far as CAIR in schools....it already is. In new Jersey, grade schools are making room for Muslim prayers etc. Islam has seeped into textbooks - there are stories every day....

That may be but, it does not mean we need to give CAIR more chances to worm its way in.

I am new here but....

Why all the rage if one believes in G_d ? Can't we believe in dinosaurs and heaven ?

Can't we teach a quick overview in class....

For someone who is new here you sure know how to show a total lack of understanding of the issue at hand, the breadth and depth of the deception the adherents are willing to go to wedge their beliefs into the public arena.

Teaching even a quick overview of religion, and Creationism IS religion, in a public school science class is unacceptable.

here is the LINKY...
Jihadwatch.org feb.26, 2009

danielpipes.org on the Islam in American textbooks
one text explains "jihad is defined as a struggle within each individual to overcome difficulties and strive to please G_d."

there is another reference to Muslims being here with the Indians....

I am not a troll.

I read the code pink comparison TODAY in this thread.

Please don't be so mean on the first day.

I have LGF every day for a couple years. I donated to Charles. I just believe in G_d and am afraid for my country.

Umm...you didn't furnish any clickable linky.

Apparently you don't know that the selfsame Discovery Institute that wrote the template modl for alla these creationism-in-public-school bills has connections with the Turkish Islamocreationist organization Harun Yahya...

I'm afraid for my country becoming that which it struggles against, and having its constitutional democracy morphed by theocrats into a Christain version of Iran or Saudi Arabia. Morphing our public schools into creationist madrassas is a giant step down that primrose path.

BTW: that Pipes-given definition is indeed the definition of the supposedly greater, inner jihad; the problem is all the murderers who are practicing the supposedly lesser, outer version. Maybe after being brainwashed and regimented for all of their lives, it's just easier for them to kill than to critically think.

Urine tax....

Urine was used a tooth whitener back in the day
History
Teeth whitening agents were used as far back as ancient Egypt and Rome. The former came up with a mixture of pulverized pumice and wine vinegar, which they would apply with a chew stick to their pearly whites. The latter had a throng of doctors who were convinced teeth could be whitened with human urine. Years later, ammonia, which is found in all urine, is still recognized as an agent that cleans the enamel on teeth.
Time Frame
By the time the 1800s hit, it was the barbers who did the teeth whitening. These hair clipping mavens also doubled as dental surgeons. Barbers would whiten teeth by first filing them down with a metal apparatus and then dousing the teeth with nitric acid. While the acid did, in fact, make the teeth shiny white, it would also eventually wear down the enamel and lead to pulpy, decayed choppers.

These people lived in absolute agony.

If on'y we'd been lucky enough to have a Sears catalogue, or corn cobs for that matter. We had to use old used papyrus made from reeds. And when we ran out of those we had to use stone tablets. You were living in the lap of luxury if you had a catalogue.........

re: #211 Iron Fist

That's a bit of a stretch. When the Creationists start cutting off people's heads and flying planes into buildings then it would make logical sense to compare them to the Mohammedans. When the Religious Right start celebrating Tim McVeigh and Eric Rudolf, then you can compare them to the Taliban, or at least to the hard core Left that celebvrate Mohammedan terrorism against "occupiers".

Right now, none of that is happening. The closest that you can come to that with are the Westborough freaks, and there are what? Twenty or thirty of them?

Certainly they can't be held up as exponents of mainstream Christian belief in the world.

Agreed on all of the above points. For the sake of discussion, I just want to raise the point that many people do argue that the Roman Catholics and Jews were involved in comparable behavior millenia ago thereby negating the argument that these are peaceful religions. Now, all of this of course occurred pre-industrial revolution, pre-enlightenment so it doesn't really hold water.

Guys, ease up a little.

Assume that Daisy22 is getting her (I'm assuming "her") sea legs, so to speak; she just got in. I understand the fun of piling on a troll, but assume, for the sake of argument, that we have a newbie who is sincerely trying to navigate the nuances of a discussion that we here have been engaging in for some time.

That's always a challenge; there's a private language which ends up evolving on any site, and this site is no exception. There is no purpose to doing a pile-on simply to see if a newbie can be suckered into getting him/herself quickly banned by putting foot in mouth; banning can happen at any time.

In the meanwhile, it is far better to try and persuade someone who is perhaps not quite yet attuned to the substance of the discussion than it is to go for the cheap thrill of all-out attack.

A thousand updings!

re: #355 buzzsawmonkey

You may well be right--but, as I observed, banning can happen at any time. I think that there should be at least a 48-hour rule where piling on a newbie is concerned, unless that newbie really works overtime to distinguish him- or herself as a primo asshole; there is a big difference between reading the conversation from the outside and participating in it from the inside.

This is, indeed, a tough room, and rightly so--and it's different when you've got to field the replies directed at you, as opposed to merely reading them as a spectator. In addition, I think that it is important to be on the alert against the in-crowd mentality which affects every group to some extent, and give the newbies a chance to find their own voices. Again, they can always be bounced if that becomes necessary--but we should be able to adjust to slightly variant voices, and should, in addition, be willing to bend a certain amount of effort towards the salutary goal of persuading the persuadable.

Buzz- I've done my fair share of helping newbies who didn't get the issue. I believe I can spot an honest inquiry from bullshit. And I see bullshit in this case.

You have a right to complain about that. However, a creationism thread isn't the place to do it. Tensions run high.

Start off by doing it on an open thread, with suitable disclaimers as to intention.

What's your rush? Why the eagerness to push for condemnation and banning?

Why the rush to defend someone who despite reading the site for 2 years characterizes the mood of the site as one of rage towards mere believers? How can that not be a troll? And incidentally, Ihave not called for it to be banned - I have given my opinion and reasons for that opinion.

Not going to happen. People will steak with old paradigms. Against all odds (and proofs).

If the creationists can come up with actual proof, I will accept it, but they don't, they won't, and they can't. They can believe what they want, good for them, just don't try to make kids believe it, or tell me I must believe it.

I seem to have spontaneously developed a New England accent... bastardized is the word.

Your initial assessment that I went too far equating Creationism in schools with Burqas is correct. I took it to the extreme and lost accuracy.

Truthfully, on a practical level I'm not against the mere breath of the word Creationism. I think an educator in certain parts of our country would have a heck of a time trying to teach about evolution without questions from students trying to reconcile their religion and creationism arising. If anything, it allows for discourse that will help teach students to actually THINK and evaluate evidence and data and sources properly.

True, I didn't follow. As much of an about 30% comments (here & there) that make me wept my face from sweet drilling my root's hair.

Darwin waited 12 years before publishing his book about evolution. He was afraid of the implication on theology. Being a first class at his time & connected 2 all others rule elements, he felt uneasiness with his conclusions concerning the way nature is behaving.

I think that evolution implies there was no creator. Without a creator the implication is that religions are likely inventions. This is reasonable, and I think the onus is on people who disagree to provide some argument that reconciles the basis of religions (mainly the absolutist ones) when nothing supernatural was involved in the creation (or modification thereof) of everything.

451 Emerald  Mon, Mar 23, 2009 7:53:16am

re: #450 el guape

I think that evolution implies there was no creator.

Why? There is absolutely no logical reason to believe that. Any being capable of creating the universe is perfectly able to create a biological process to keep things moving along after he got it started.

Do you think snowfall is the result of angels having pillow fights, or has the creator invoked a set of physical laws that govern weather? We don't stick to a wildly spinning planet because demons hold us down by invisible strings, but because of a set of physical laws. Volcanic eruptions aren't a sign of a swinger god on the lookout for fresh virgins, but a manifestation of the natural laws that keep the planet working.

Why can't a creator use evolution to keep the life he started on the right track as he intended? You're assertion places an illogical limitation on what is supposed to be omnipotent being.

Well, there's no need for that to be the case. In the case of Christianity, for instance, the Bible already contains all necessary passages to allow the concurrent, and non-mutually-exclusive concepts of religion and evolutionary theory. ..as long as you're not a bilbical literalist that is. Sure, Genesis cites 7 days, but later in the Bible you have passages indicating that time is, to God, entirely different than to us (paraphrased; "a day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as a day"). In light of that statement, it's easy to conceive of God using evolution as his tool to create life as we know it now.

Point is, evolution and religion can live comfortably together. . .unless you choose to take everything in the bible literally.
