Lance Armstrong has crashed while racing in the Vuelta a Castilla y León in Spain, and may have broken his collarbone—which could put an end to his Tour de France comeback.

Lance Armstrong crashed hard in Monday’s opening stage of the Vuelta a Castilla y León and was transported by ambulance to a hospital in nearby Palencia, Spain.

First indications appear that the seven-time Tour de France champion seriously injured his right shoulder and might have broken his collarbone.

“It’s unfortunate, but that’s bike racing,” Armstrong spokesman Mark Higgins told VeloNews. Higgins, who is in Austin, Texas, said he had no details on Armstrong’s condition.

Armstrong’s teammate Levi Leipheimer told VeloNews he did not see the crash.

"I was in the front. It was on really narrow, bumpy roads. It was a pretty bad road, super-rough and narrow. The edges were deteriorating, with cracks and parts missing, It was worse than typical (Spanish roads).” Leipheimer said. “We don’t know even if he broke it. I all I know for sure is that he’s out and went away in an ambulance.”
