Lance Armstrong has crashed while racing in the Vuelta a Castilla y León in Spain, and may have broken his collarbone—which could put an end to his Tour de France comeback.

Lance Armstrong crashed hard in Monday’s opening stage of the Vuelta a Castilla y León and was transported by ambulance to a hospital in nearby Palencia, Spain.

First indications appear that the seven-time Tour de France champion seriously injured his right shoulder and might have broken his collarbone.

“It’s unfortunate, but that’s bike racing,” Armstrong spokesman Mark Higgins told VeloNews. Higgins, who is in Austin, Texas, said he had no details on Armstrong’s condition.

Armstrong’s teammate Levi Leipheimer told VeloNews he did not see the crash.

“I was in the front. It was on really narrow, bumpy roads. It was a pretty bad road, super-rough and narrow. The edges were deteriorating, with cracks and parts missing, It was worse than typical (Spanish roads).” Leipheimer said. “We don’t know even if he broke it. I all I know for sure is that he’s out and went away in an ambulance.”

Parhaps he can use minor league baseball for rehabilitation. Give Michael Jordon a call and see if he has any connections.

Armstrong is scheduled to race the Giro d’Italia, May 9-31.

Riders with broken collarbones typically return to competition between four to six weeks after the injury.

But do they return at the level they had achieved before the crash?

Ouch, it hurts just reading about it. Broken collar bones hurt like hell I understand, and lay you up for quite awhile. This reminds me of what G. Gordon Liddy once said (just googled) “You know, it only takes eight pounds of pressure to break the collar bone,” Liddy explained. “Next time, whack him right here.” He touched his collar bone. “Without that bone, the arm is useless, it just dangles.”

Update on Palin's stimulus gamble...
Lawmakers urged to go for all stimulus funding

Residents told Anchorage area lawmakers in no uncertain terms they want the state to apply for all federal funds for which Alaska is eligible under the federal stimulus plan.
...
"I'm really concerned that our governor has chosen to pander to her political pipe dream as opposed to ..." said Deanna Youngren, a special education instructor, before applause Saturday from the audience packed inside the Anchorage Assembly Chamber drowned out the rest of her statement.
...
Palin's budget director, Karen Rehfeld, said the controversy over the governor's stance on the stimulus money is somewhat misplaced. She said the administration hasn't yet rejected a single dollar of the stimulus funding.
...
Lawmakers can seek any stimulus funds that Palin leaves out of her proposal, however she retains veto rights.

State Sens. Bert Stedman, R-Sitka, and Hollis French, D-Anchorage, introduced a resolution Friday saying the Legislature "certifies the state's acceptance of all funds that may be available."

Rep. Les Gara, D-Anchorage, said Palin "got some really bad advice" on the stimulus money.

"She's seeing strings attached that really don't exist," he said.

"I'm not interested in creating bigger government or funding we can't afford to in the future," said Rep. Craig Johnson, R-Anchorage. He wants more details on what the state is getting into if it takes all the stimulus money.

Sen. Kevin Meyer, R-Anchorage, is chairman of the Legislative Budget and Audit Committee, where much of the debate will occur on the stimulus issue.

Meyer said Rehfeld told him Friday state commissioners will apply for all the money by the appropriate deadlines. Then the debate can begin on whether to turn any of it back.

We'll see how this pans out but I'd guess that the legislature will vote to accept the funds. That way Palin can garner conservative love for rejecting the money but she'll bow to the legislature are allow the funds to be accepted.

re: #63 wrenchwench

Anyone care to attempt a diagnosis based on a cell phone photo?

Well, with a complete fracture, the unopposed action of the sternocleidomastoid muscle usually results in superior displacement of the medial fracture fragment, which can create an externally visible deformity. If he'd sit up a little bit, we could see if he has one.

Can someone call whoever that cell phone belongs to and tell them to ask Lance to sit up a little? He's making it hard for us to take care of him over here.

AP says it's fractured:

He may not be ready for the Giro d’Italia (May 9-31), but could be for the Tour de France (July 4 to 26). Will affect team strategies for sure. There are other possible leaders on the team.

That'll show those greedy workers at the plane factory and the construction firm for the hangar. Way to sock it to 'em, JP - your government is proud of you.

"By providing a market for these assets that does not now exist, this program will help improve asset values, increase lending capacity by banks, and reduce uncertainty about the scale of losses on bank balance sheets," Geithner said in an op-ed piece published in today's Wall Street Journal. "The ability to sell assets to this fund will make it easier for banks to raise private capital."

So who will hold these assets? What happens to them? I can't help but think this is all a shell game. Wall St. seems a bit pleased though that banks aren't going to be forced to reorganize and/or change behavior. Message of the day seems to be relief that things will continue status quo.

I understand.

Have to wait to see. I do think that we need more guys like Mr Kumarasiri to speak up for British values and take it away from the likes of the BNP. I for one, are concerned, because coming from Scotland, there is a rise in Scottish nationalism and it don't like the look of the Scot Nats. They'll do anything to get independence, we'd be a poorer folk for it because the Muslims have too much power in the SNP. We in Scotland need some positive leadership from the rest of the UK to keep Scottish nationalism at bay.

A new twist of Stockholm Syndrome...
Terry Holdbrooks stood watch over prisoners at Gitmo. What he saw made him adopt their faith.

Snip: He has holes the size of quarters in both earlobes, stretched-out piercings that he plugs with wooden discs. At his Phoenix apartment, bedecked with horror-film memorabilia, he rolls up both sleeves to reveal wrist-to-shoulder tattoos. He describes the ink work as a narrative of his mistakes and addictions. They include religious symbols and Nazi SS bolts, track marks and, in large letters, the words BY DEMONS BE DRIVEN. He says the line, from a heavy-metal song, reminds him to be a better person.

From this BNP link:

[Link: bnp.org.uk...]

The BNP have firmly nailed their sails to their mast by saying they are ethno-nationalists. I get the feeling that Mr Kumarasiri, a Sri-Lankan immigrant would not be welcome in their party or a BNP run Britain, don't you?

re: #9 karmic_inquisitor

re: #3 J.D.

That's a shame. I hope he heals well and quickly.

I heard on the news that Matt Lauer had a bike wreck yesterday when a deer ran out in front of him.

Breaking a collar bone is common among bicycle racers; one crashes and it's a reflex action to put out one's arm. The resulting fall compresses the extended arm/shoulder into the collar bone, fracturing it. I've known guys heal to the point where they could race in two-three weeks (obviously, not serious) and, if this is not critical, he should be back in time for le Tour.

Matt Lauer, on the other hand, should die and go to hell with a hard-on.

129 wiffersnapper  Mon, Mar 23, 2009 4:52:25pm

Forget Chuck Norris and Jack Bauerisms, we need Lance Armstrongisms.

The socialist way to build a road is as follows:

Contractor 1: I can build this for 2.5 billion. Reinforced concrete foundations, 40 years guarantee.

Socialist: Ok, sounds good.

Contractor 2: I can build this for 3 billion, (.25 for you and .25 for me).

Socialist: Did I hear .40 for me and .10 for you?.

Contractor 2: Sure.

Then the road lasts for four years before being botched. The same applies when you see a 5 narrow lanes bridge in Seville which looks it should have only four, but in fact it was planed initially to have 6. Traffic jams due to such narrow bridge are solved by installing radars and lowering the speed limit from 60 to 35 mph... no kidding.

BTW, in half 2008 they stole more money in speed tickets in Spain that whole 2007.

I wish we could have at least your democrats, they have a far high level of decency and integrity that what we have, so go figure folks.
