When Lew Rockwell Attacks

Paleocon neanderthal Lew Rockwell didn’t like our post about his appearance with Alex Jones on a Fox News online show hosted by Andrew Napolitano, so he takes a creepy little slap at us: LewRockwell.com Blog: Little Green Footballs Is Upset.

The right-wing site with the flavor of a provincial Soviet newspaper in the 1930s (hey, another definition of neocon!), is turning greener at the Judge Napolitano show. (Thanks to Lance Adams)

Who is Lew Rockwell? For starters, he worked with Murray Rothbard to concoct a strategy of exploiting racial resentment, to create a coalition of populist paleoconservatives.

And there’s very good evidence that he is behind those sick racist newsletters published in the 1980s and 90s by Ron Paul: Who Wrote Ron Paul’s Newsletters?: Libertarian movement veterans, and a Paul campaign staffer, say it was ‘paleolibertarian’ strategist Lew Rockwell.

Ron Paul doesn’t seem to know much about his own newsletters. The libertarian-leaning presidential candidate says he was unaware, in the late 1980s and early 1990s, of the bigoted rhetoric about African Americans and gays that was appearing under his name. He told CNN last week that he still has “no idea” who might have written inflammatory comments such as “Order was only restored in L.A. when it came time for the blacks to pick up their welfare checks”—statements he now repudiates. Yet in interviews with reason, a half-dozen longtime libertarian activists—including some still close to Paul—all named the same man as Paul’s chief ghostwriter: Ludwig von Mises Institute founder Llewellyn Rockwell, Jr.

Financial records from 1985 and 2001 show that Rockwell, Paul’s congressional chief of staff from 1978 to 1982, was a vice president of Ron Paul & Associates, the corporation that published the Ron Paul Political Report and the Ron Paul Survival Report. The company was dissolved in 2001. During the period when the most incendiary items appeared—roughly 1989 to 1994—Rockwell and the prominent libertarian theorist Murray Rothbard championed an open strategy of exploiting racial and class resentment to build a coalition with populist “paleoconservatives,” producing a flurry of articles and manifestos whose racially charged talking points and vocabulary mirrored the controversial Paul newsletters recently unearthed by The New Republic. To this day Rockwell remains a friend and advisor to Paul—accompanying him to major media appearances; promoting his candidacy on the LewRockwell.com blog; publishing his books; and peddling an array of the avuncular Texas congressman’s recent writings and audio recordings.

Rockwell has denied responsibility for the newsletters’ contents to The New Republic’s Jamie Kirchick. Rockwell twice declined to discuss the matter with reason, maintaining this week that he had “nothing to say.” He has characterized discussion of the newsletters as “hysterical smears aimed at political enemies” of The New Republic. Paul himself called the controversy “old news” and “ancient history” when we reached him last week, and he has not responded to further request for comment.

But a source close to the Paul presidential campaign told reason that Rockwell authored much of the content of the Political Report and Survival Report. “If Rockwell had any honor he’d come out and I say, ‘I wrote this stuff,’” said the source, who asked not to be named because Paul remains friendly with Rockwell and is reluctant to assign responsibility for the letters. “He should have done it 10 years ago.”

UPDATE at 3/24/09 1:46:18 pm:

Here’s some more information on this lunatic: Gary North, Lew Rockwell, and the Politics of Stoning Heretics and Homosexuals to Death.

Ron Paul's Old Newsletter Revealed

Ron Paul supported the PLO terrorists (1985)
Ron Paul: Israel bought Jesse Helms (1985)
Ron Paul: Traitor had direct line to President Reagan (1992, refers to commie business collaborator Armand Hammer)
RON PAUL ON DEFENSE SPENDING (1992, sounds like Ramsey Clark)
Ron Paul: Clinton didn’t cut defense enough (1993)
Ron Paul: US “military is mowing civilians down in the streets” (1993, refers to Somalia)
RON PAUL ACCUSED U.S. TROOPS OF WAR CRIMES IN DESERT STORM (1991, this one repeats Ramsey Clark’s allegations almost verbatim)

Sick, disgusting men. *spit*

How much difference is there, really, between the far-Left, the far-Right, and overt white supremacists? How do the public stances of Michael Moore, Pat Buchanan, and David Duke compare? Proponents of both extreme views now think and sound so much alike, they sound like soulmates. Somehow these fringe characters have moved so far around the edges that they have arrived at the same territory, spouting identical positions in copycat rhetoric on such issues as Iraq, the broader War on Terror, and the Jewish state of Israel...

He's being welcomed into the mainstream conservative movement. He's appearing on Fox and someone even noticed links on Tea Party pages to his sites.

Along those lines, reason had this quotation about Luap Nor:

My friend Phil Blumel has been active for the last decade in Florida GOP politics and has been following Paul closely for two decades.

He’s a big Paul supporter and has been encouraged at how many rank-and-file Republicans seem open to his message. He understands Paul’s appeal to the conspiratorial types, though he doesn’t share their interests, and doesn’t think Paul really does either. “I’ve heard him speak 40 times, and you can never really tell that he actually believes in any particular conspiracies,” Blumel notes. “But he speaks in a language such that conspiracy nuts believe that he does. Me not being a conspiracy nut, he speaks vaguely enough that I can listen and it doesn’t sound like he really buys it.

“That’s a political skill,” Blumel jokes, “triangulating between the sane and the insane and keeping them both on board.”

42 Fat Jolly Penguin  Tue, Mar 24, 2009 1:59:42pm

That update article is astounding. Here (my emphases):

Lest such relations become unduly frictionless, here's a clip-and-save sampler of Reconstructionist quotes to keep on hand:

On the link between reason and liberty: "Reason itself is not an objective `given' but is itself a divinely created instrument employed by the unregenerate to further their attack on God." The "appeal to reason as final arbiter" must be rejected; "if man is permitted autonomy in one sphere he will soon claim autonomy in all spheres...We therefore deny every expression of human autonomy--liberal, conservative or libertarian." Thus affirmed Andrew Sandlin, in the January Chalcedon Report.

Intellectual liberty (other religions department): Hindus, Muslims, and the like would still be free to practice their rites "in the privacy of your own home...But you would not be allowed to proselytize and undermine the order of the state...every civil order protects its foundations," wrote the late Recon theologian Greg Bahnsen. Bahnsen added that the interdiction applies to "someone [who] comes and proselytizes for another god or another final authority (and by the way, that god may be man)."

Intellectual liberty (where secularists fit in department): "All sides of the humanistic spectrum are now, in principle, demonic; communists and conservatives, anarchists and socialists, fascists and republicans," explains Rushdoony. "When someone tries to undermine the commitment to Jehovah which is fundamental to the civil order of a godly state--then that person needs to be restrained by the magistrate...those who will not acknowledge Jehovah as the ultimate authority behind the civil law code which the magistrate is enforcing would be punished and repressed," wrote Bahnsen.

On ultimate goals: "So let us be blunt about it," says Gary North. "We must use the doctrine of religious liberty to gain independence for Christian schools until we train up a generation of people who know that there is no religious neutrality, no neutral law, no neutral education, and no neutral civil government. Then they will get busy in constructing a Bible-based social, political and religious order which finally denies the religious liberty of the enemies of God."

There are no words in the English language to describe how crazy these people are. Holy shit.

It used to be that the only thing you found at the confluence of the Extreme Left and the Radical Right was the Church of the Subgenius, which was supposed to be satirical in nature.

Now, there are people there who in all seriousness believe things even crazier than "Bob's" minions did.

Second time around for the continent. In the later Roman Empire, the army was mainly Romanized Franks and Burgundians. The legions' worst defeat, the massacre of Teutonberg Forest in AD 9, was at the hands of Germanic tribes led by a local chieftain named Arminius, who prior to that had been a general... in the legions.

Like they say, those who fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it. Where they're wrong is in saying that the first time is tragedy, and the second time is always farce.

The rerun can be just as tragic as the original. If not more so.

Anti-idiotarian. I would also add that many of us seem to be fiscal conservatives with only a minor social agenda. We don't wish to control people. Instead, we have control freaks on the "right", the Ronulans, the creationists; and control freaks on the "left", the Greens, the socialists.

Right and left as we knew it no longer seems applicable when dealing with idiotarians on both sides.

I hate Ron Paul. In an interesting parallel to Obama, he seems to miraculously associate with all the worst people. The WaPost article about how his Blimpmaster joined Russell Means' "autonomous" Republic of Lakotah -- the moonbat libertarian equivalent of crossing the streams in Ghostbusters -- to try to get random embassies in DC to recognize his new 'country' was one of the funniest things ever.

[Link: www.washingtonpost.com...]

Means was here in Washington seeking diplomatic recognition from the world community so that he could ultimately finagle a seat at the United Nations, whether the U.S. of A. likes it or not. His motto, borrowed from Gandhi, is, "First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, then you win."

The plan was to barnstorm Embassy Row. He hoped to visit ambassadors from several U.S. adversaries (Venezuela and Serbia, for instance) as well as from a few other countries he deemed likely allies -- for instance, Bolivia, which has an indigenous president in Evo Morales, and Finland, which, in Means's view, "appreciates freedom because it's always been an independent ally of Russia."

It would be a four-day mission, and Means was traveling with an attache, Lakotah's volunteer attorney general, Jerry Collette. A Libertarian activist and a paralegal who recently emigrated to Lakotah from his longtime home in North Carolina, Collette is most renowned for the intricate, loopholing legal work he did last winter to enable the supporters of presidential candidate Ron Paul to fly a campaign blimp up and down the East Coast.

There's more to see than can ever be seen
More to do than can ever be done
There's far too much to take in here
More to find than can ever be found
But the prompter rolling high
Through the smoke-filled sky
Keeps great and small on the endless round

It's the Circle of Loons
And it moves us all
Through despair and hope
Through faith and love
Till we find our place
On the path unwinding

It became a decade in which the socialist experimenters had almost completely free rein due to this. The free-market people, like us, had become marginalized by both sides.

Jews, at least in the West and near-West, have always been included. In Europe, the peculiar history of banking and credit with respect to the Catholic Church (no interest allowed for many years ala sharia) has much to do with the hatred and distrust of Jews ingrained (seemingly) into the national psyche. Is there even enough gold in the world to cover what our (U.S.) economy can produce?

The Death of Paper Money

Today we are witnessing why in paper fiat-land debt is a four letter word; and a nasty one at that. The only thing the Federal Reserve has accomplished since its creation in 1913 is the loss of 95% of the dollar’s purchasing power; and they are hard at work destroying what little is left. Incompetence does not even begin to describe their actions.

Money is no longer the means to pay off debt, paper money is debt. The United States has gone from being the world’s largest creditor nation to the largest debtor nation in the world. Weekly we are witnessing the unwinding of the paper fiat money system, as it reverberates around the world.

Banks our going under, financial institutions are falling; hedge funds are collapsing, bail outs are needed on a regular basis. Who pays for all this mismanagement? We do – you and me.

Sharmuta,

sometimes an interview is just an interview.

When FOX's O'Reilly interviewed Candidate Obama, I didn't consider that "promoting kooks" but rather an interview.

When Fox has liberals on, I don't consider them promoting liberals.

You know, I agree with you here. I'm afraid that if we're not careful in condemnation of the kooks, we're going to run the risk of using too broad a brush and taking out the good with the bad. I've heard Beck say some goofy things and some times he has goofy guests, but he also has people like Bolton who is not a nut just because he appears on Beck's show. Sure, FOX News Channel has a lot of tabloid coverage, but they also have good hard news coverage (as much as anyone anymore).

Charles has been careful not to associate with groups of questionable or bad character even if some of their views are similar to his. Do I wish FOX would be more careful? Yes, but if done right, appearances can be used to point out the kookiness in some guests rather than giving them credibility.

Bolton was spewing the same nonsense as beck about the gold standard and world government as Beck. I never paid much attention to Bolton before and I'd never heard him talk conspiracy theories before today.

I didn't hear him 'cause I'm at work, but I take your word. I hadn't heard him say that stuff either. But I wonder why Beck would be asking him about economics? He's not an economist.

The gold standard wouldn't work today as the panacea some think it might be, at least partially, because there's not enough gold in the world to support the money supply.

Written in 1953

The fiat-money system, as it operates today in this country and in some others, could avoid disaster only because a keen critique on the part of a few economists alerted public opinion and forced upon the government cautious restraint in their inflationary ventures. If it had not been for the opposition of these authors, usually labeled orthodox and reactionary, the dollar would long since have gone the way of the German mark of 1923. The catastrophe of the Reich's currency was brought about precisely because no such opposition was vocal in Weimar Germany...

The attitude of a great many people with regard to inflation is ambivalent. They are aware, on the one hand, of the dangers inherent in a continuation of the policy of pumping more and more money into the economic system. But as soon as anything substantial is done to stop increasing the amount of money, they begin to cry out about high interest rates and bearish conditions on the stock and commodity exchanges. They are loath to relinquish the cherished illusion which ascribes to government and central banks the magic power to make people happy by endless spending and inflation.

I'll quibble about Rome. Roman civilisation is our civilisation; and their language, religion, and law still holds today. Of the others, all we have are this and that scientific discovery.

"All right... all right... but apart from better sanitation and medicine and education and irrigation and public health and roads and a freshwater system and baths and public order - what have the Romans done for us?"

One the one hand - yep, up to a point. But that would also apply to Babylon (Astronomy), to the various German empires, even to Egypt.
They are of course all part of Western civilisation.
But the point is, their political entity has gone.
There is no Roman Empire any more, in any shape or form.

There is still Israel - there is still Jerusalem, even though Emperor Hadrian did his best to eradicate it from the face of the earth, and build 'Aeolia Capitolina' in its stead ...

re: #154 USBeast

Yes, it does go deeper. It has to do with the creation of a Jewish State. As long as Jews were the perpetual victims it was okay to condemn antisemitism. When the downtrodden Jews got up on their hind legs and actually did something...well, academe can have that! Only losers deserve sympathy.

There is also a "legacy" involved, so to speak.

Having studied under some professors (and even high-school teachers) who were the OGs of the "academic left" in the Fifties, I can attest to the fact that there was deep resentment of Israel allying itself with the West, specifically the U.S. in that crowd. Their "reasoning" went like this;

1. The founders of Israel (Weitzmann, Meir, Ben-Gurion, etc.), were socialists.

2. Many of them were Russian, or of Russian descent.

3. When the vote in the new UN on partition of the Palestine Mandate came in 1948, the USSR voted "yes".

4. Therefore, the new socialist state of Israel owed itas loyalty to Stalin, and should have immediately thrown in its lot with the Soviets, giving them both access to the oil-rich MidEast and a warm-water port that could nott be as easily blockaded as Sebastopol or Riga. (The Bosporus is a naval "choke point", much like the Straits of Hormuz.)

When Israel instead (a) cast its lot with the U.S., and (b) turned away from siocialism for the most part, these academics felt like they had been stabbed in the back. How dare those You-Know-Whos betray Uncle Joe and the World Socialist Movement!

What I got into considerable trouble for pointing out to them was;

1. Israel started out as an agrarian socialist state, with the kibbutzim and zahals, but they al eventually failed financially. And a modern industrial/technological state cannot survive as a socialist economy- even Red China is figuring that out now, fifty years too late IMHO.

2. When Stalin launched his purges against the kulaks ("rich peasants") in the 2os and 30s, the brunt of the oppression- and the dislocations, exiles, and even outright murders- fell on the middle class, especially small and medium business owners whose goods were confiscated after the fact. Russia's Jews fell largely into this middle class category- hence, they were disproportionately savaged by Stalin's "homicidal utopianism", on a level not seen again until his equallu insane purges of his military's officers in the days before Poland and Barbarossa.

There was a reason that Russian Jews began arriving in the then- Palestine mandate before German Panzers rolled into the Ukraine. This was it.

As I said, the teachers I dealt with didn't ant to hear this. In their minds, Israel had "betrayed" their "great benefactor", Uncle Joe. And after that, they were locked in Payback Mode on all levels.

The hilarious thin (to me at least) is, that most modern-day liberals, brought up in the hothouse atmosphere of academic anti-semitic, anti-Israeli rhetoric, have no clue how it originally got started.

Basically, by their "mentors" having a temper tantrum when they decided that Israel had deliberately pissed in their soup.

What really happened, of course, was that those "mentors" had an attack of Exuberant Stupidity- that they have passed down to each succeeding generation.

cheers

No, what they are saying is that they see Obama's nationalized health care coming and they think this is the price being extorted to keep them in business. The result will be higher costs to the consumer, disguised through layers. The firm will have to get a guaranteed profit on volume since the logical insurance model is now out the window.

The Spanish "bubble" was the takings from the New World, and the "panic" was the depredations of pirates, even though their attacks on the yearly "treasure fleets" coming from Mexico, etc., was actually almost insignificant compared to the total Spanish haul. But they got a lot of publicity "back home", investors got nervous, and next thing you know, everybody was bailing except for the Crown, and the speculators. And that's a recipe' for hyper-inflation if there ever was one.

All those doubloons and "pieces of eight" should have stabilized the Spanish economy, which was in fact still struggling to recover from the Thirty Years' War (1618-1648). But the panic pretty much negated their effect. Then the War of the Spanish Succession (1701-14) came along, and really smacked the Spanish economy for six. In many ways, the whole mess was a preview of the cycles that would be repeated over and over again in postwar periods in succeeding centuries, notably after World War One.

/Often, winning a war isn't nearly as difficult as figuring out how to pay or same. The one constant is that losing always costs more than winning, in the long run.

cheers

re: #154 USBeast

Yes, it does go deeper. It has to do with the creation of a Jewish State. As long as Jews were the perpetual victims it was okay to condemn antisemitism. When the downtrodden Jews got up on their hind legs and actually did something...well, academe can have that! Only losers deserve sympathy.

That is a good analysis, but i see it this way. There is anti Israeli seniment in academia. That is driven by the Islamic influence on campus & the typical liberal distaste for Western Culture. Israel is clearly Western.
Antisemitism seems to stand on it's own on campus. They often tie the two together, but I detect something malevolent that goes beyond Israel.

Thats another good point, about using the word 'Holocaust'.
It detracts from the true singularity that happened.

It is not just about the unimaginable number - after all, stalin and Mao managed comfortably to kill far more of their people.
It is perhaps not even, dare I say it, about the destruction of just one single people, because others have done that, to a much lesser extent, e.g the Tutsis and Hutus.

The true, singular, indescribable horror of this is that this was done literally on an industrial scale, with industrial methods.
That is the point which gets debated away when deniers squabble about a million here or there, as if it was a stimulus programme!

It is the criminal effort behind the work to install these factories of death, and the factories themselves which is so mind-blowig - because the 'taeter' were indeed ensconced behind their desks in their offices, ticking boxes, sending material, making trains and personnel available - middle management, managing the death of millions as an industrialist manages the production of shoes.
Not even Stalin and Mao robbed their victims of their basic humanity in their various GULAGs in the way Hitler robbed the Jews through this de-humanised, industrialised method of killing.

That is the horror - that is the unforgivable crime against humanity, and that is why we have to do all we can that this is never ever possible again.

T'ain't nothing "final" about it really. I just had to shell out $160 and change to fix her computer because the kid needs it for school and she couldn't hack the expense. She still calls me when her van has the hiccups and her microwave went on the fritz yesterday. The vast improvement in my life is that, at some point, I get to hang up and there is peace.

Amen. There was an industry of death that even German Industry was involved in. My Father in Law "worked" for BMW, VW, and Bayer among others. All of these companies knew exactly what was going on and were complicit in the evil entailed therein. My Father in Law, G-d rest his soul, collected a check from the German government every month until he died last September. I miss him, and his stories and companionship, dearly. A truer man, in every sense of the word, you will not find.

I've known this guy was a nut job for at least 10 years. I am not so sure if he is a right winger. He and Cindy Sheehan were a romantic item a couple of years back. I am not sure how to categorize him, other than a nut job.

I was going to ask about that. I got the feeling that the same folks who follow Lew Rockwell, also follow Rense, which is hardly a right wing site.

But then again, the political spectrum is a circle at its fringes.

A must-read for those who have not yet done so--and worth re-reading if you have:

Politics and the English Language by George Orwell

In a world where our government is now calling terrorist acts "man-made disasters," this primer against political euphemism is essential.

I have that as one of the links on my school web site as "enrichment" for my students.

Lew Rockwell has struck me as a looney-tune for awhile now, and he seems intent on doing nothing to disabuse anyone of that notion.
