Texas School Board Creationists Pass Several Ridiculous Amendments

Science • Views: 5,314

In a vote this morning, the Texas State Board of Education deadlocked on a motion to restore anti-evolution language in the state’s science curriculum: Split vote upholds Texas education board ruling to ax evolution ‘strengths and weaknesses’ rule.

AUSTIN – A last-ditch effort by social conservatives to require that Texas teachers cover the “weaknesses” in the theory of evolution in science classes was rejected by the State Board of Education Thursday in a split vote.

Board members deadlocked 7-7 on a motion to restore a long-time curriculum rule that “strengths and weaknesses” of all scientific theories – notably Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution – be taught in science classes and covered in textbooks for those subjects.

Voting for the requirement were the seven Republican board members aligned with social conservative groups. Against the proposal were three other Republicans and four Democrats.

While this may seem like good news (unless you’re a creationist who wants to impose your views on everyone else’s children), the final vote tomorrow could still go the other way—and you can be quite sure that the Texas GOP is putting major pressure on those three courageous Republicans who voted against the motion.

I call them “courageous” because I have first-hand knowledge of just how unpleasant and vindictive the GOP’s fundamentalist faction can be, when you step off the reservation and criticize them.

But that’s not the whole story, either. After they failed to restore the silly “weaknesses” language, the creationists on the school board proceeded to ram through several even more outrageous amendments, undermining scientific concepts such as common descent and the age of the universe: Science Under Siege in Texas.

OK, we’ve had a little time to digest all that went on today at the Texas State Board of Education. Without going through each of the many amendments that passed, here’s essentially what happened. This morning the board slammed the door on bringing creationism into classrooms through phony “weaknesses” arguments. But then board members turned around and threw open all the windows to pseudoscientific nonsense attacking core concepts like common descent and natural selection.

The amendments approved today are very problematic, regardless of the important victory over “strengths and weaknesses.” We anticipate that all 15 board members will be participating tomorrow, however, including a pro-science member who was absent today. So there is still time to reverse course.

Tomorrow, with the final vote, the board has a serious decision to make: is the science education of the next generation of Texas schoolchildren going to be based on fact-based, 21st-century science or on the personal beliefs of board members promoting phony arguments and pseudoscience?

You can still weigh in by sending e-mails to board members at sboeteks@tea.state.tx.us. Texas Education Agency staff will distribute e-mails to board members.

The seven board members and social conservative groups supporting the rule have argued that its absence would discourage classroom discussion about evolution.

If they really wanted to encourage discussion of evolution in the classrooms, then they should see to it that evolution gets a full week in science class instead of the three days Texas teachers say they spend on it.

They have cited alleged flaws in Darwin's theory that they contend should be covered in classes and textbooks.

There are no "flaws" in the theory, there are only flaws in their understanding.

There will, of course, be yet another court battle over this if it passes. The only good news about it is that after wasting more tax-payer time and resources, this too will get thrown out and then the creationist trogs will have to come up with yet another scheme.

As to the GOP putting pressure on this... It shows a certain living in a bubble kind of stupidity that is truly remarkable.

Vote GOP, the party that wants small government - except when it is unconstitutionally abusing it's own government position to force someone else's (false and anti-scientific) dogma on your children.

Vote GOP, With two wars on and a financial crisis, don't worry, we'll be sure to bash Darwin because that serves the public interest more!

The GOP has lost its mind. They have become their own Mobys

I always thought that I did not need to investigate the issue of creation vs. evolution (I was a strict creationist) because I already understood the issues. I think I am not an unusual case (in this instance anyway).
When I came to LGF, I avoided the issue, then one day, just hanging around, someone posted something that really got my gears turning.
Then I did my own investigation and soul searching. I am so glad I took the time to understand the issues!

Initially I saw this as petty myself. And never cared to look into it. Because of Charles I see the extreme nonsense this poses.

When this first started my first inclination that Charles was off base. After reading up on DI and the Wedge strategy, and looking at what they were doing I first decided it was bad faith, worse science, and lousy politics.

Kris Kristofferson Lyrics...

Jesus was a capricorn
He ate organic food
He believed in love and peace
And never wore no shoes

Long hair, beard and sandles
And a funky bunch of friends
Reckon we'd just nail him up
If he came down again...

John Prine sang it.

The SCOTUS did outlaw it in 1987, which is why "Intelligent Design" was formed- to get around the ban.

But the SCOTUS can't just rule on an issue without having a case in front of them, and for that to happen, someone with standing has to appeal a lower court's decision. It will be awhile yet until that happens, but eventually, ID will be shown the door too.

From the Discover link:

Texas Board of Education creationist Barbara Cargill today proposed an amendment to the science standards saying that teachers have to tell their students there are different estimates for the age of the Universe. This is not even a veiled attempt to attack the Big Bang model of the Universe, which clearly, and through multiple lines of evidence, indicates the Universe is 13.7 +/- 0.12 billion years old.

So Ms. Cargill is right, if she means that "different estimates" range from 13.58 to 13.82 (given one standard deviation) billion years old.
But she doesn’t mean that at all, does she? If you read her website, you’ll see she’s an out-and-out creationist. She has a large number of, um, factual errors on her site that are clearly right out of the Creationist Obscurational Handbook.

Anyway, her antiscience amendment passed 11 - 3

WTF?! What is wrong with these people?!

Israel successfully tests 'Iron Dome' anti-rocket shield

The Iron Dome anti-rocket shield passed a critical test in the past 48 hours, the Defense Ministry said on Thursday evening, in a message that will be welcomed by residents of the rocket-battered western Negev.

During the test, a number of rockets were launched, "of the same type that were fired in recent years at Israel," and the Iron Dome system responded "accordingly," the Defense Ministry said, using terminology indicating a successful interception of the projectiles.

I believe it. I really think folks like this don't see how uncomfortable their zealotry makes other people, and what a turn off it is politically. I support their right to be as religious as they want to be, but when it comes to politics there's a reason why our Founders tried to keep the two separate. They need to focus their religious energies privately, and leave it out of government functions- especially when we're talking about a school board.

I remember a while back that you urged Lizards to get involved in this issue partially by running for school boards themselves. I sure hope some people in Texas follow your advice.

Each sold shares in September 2004 -- including Ms. Waters's entire stake -- but Mr. Williams continued to hold varying amount of the company's stock. In the lawmaker's most recent financial-disclosure form, dated May 2008 and covering the prior year, Ms. Waters reported that her husband held between $250,000 and $500,000 worth of the bank's stock.
[Rep. Maxine Waters] Getty Images

Mr. Williams also received interest payments from a separate holding at the bank, also worth between $250,000 and $500,000. The 2008 form doesn't specify what that is. Mr. Williams stepped down from the bank's board last spring. It couldn't be learned whether he still owns stock in the bank. Mr. Williams didn't return calls seeking comment.
...
In a brief interview in January, Ms. Waters said she was unaware the bank received $12 million of TARP money, which arrived in December. OneUnited was "just a small" bank, she said.

How do you close a 1.75 trillion budget deficit? Expand the definition of "rich":

The White House said it would launch a search for new tax revenues, as Congressional leaders moved to scale back proposed spending increases and tax cuts in President Barack Obama's ambitious budget.

Lawmakers also were effectively excluding several middle-class tax-cut pledges that Mr. Obama made in his budget, including long-term relief from the Alternative Minimum Tax, and even long-term extension of his Making Work Pay credit. Extending AMT relief and the Making Work Pay tax credit could run around $200 billion each over the next five years. Both are in effect now but expire soon.

When the GOP formed an alliance with the religious right, everyone knew there would be consequences. Those consequences can now be seen and very much felt. When, in 2009, we have people that are fighting to teach creationism in the classroom (a problem that was solved in 1925) and those same people make up the largest base of the GOP, then the GOP has problems. So long as this problem continues to manifest itself, the GOP will continue to wither and will eventually only be a seven or eight state regional and subsequently inconsequential party. God help us (pun intended).

re: #276 WindHorse

WindHorse, I will say up front, I only know of this by way of what you posted.

Therefore, if he is the Spanish Teacher, it could truly be a way for him to make a connection, teaching Spanish by way of something already familiar to the students.

A novelty if you will.

I would say more important, (as a parent of 3 kids in school) is if he actually believes in what that pledge means, and conveys this sentiment to the kids, and can actually have them understand it in a way that I feel about it.

My dad is first generation Italian. His father got off the boat in 1898, leaving San Fele behind for America. They spoke Italian in the house, but made sure his kids were American, knew the language, assimilated, and kept their heritage in the process.

I would ask myself this question.

What does this teacher think about the Pledge he is asking them to recite in Spanish?

If you do not know the answer, ask him yourself. You pay his salary, I think it is a fair question.

You'll never know, you just might surprise yourself.

Jerry Coyne wrote a piece in yesterday's Guardian on this:

Evolution is a scientific fact – except, perhaps, in Texas, where the school board is trying to cast doubt on it

Imagine that your state legislature has decided to revamp the way that health and medicine are taught in public schools. To do this, they must tackle the "germ theory of disease", the idea that infectious disease is caused by microorganisms such as viruses and bacteria. The legislature, noting that this idea has many vocal opponents, declares that it is "only a theory". Many people, for instance, think that Aids has nothing to do with viruses, but is the byproduct of a dissipated life. Christian Scientists believe that disease results from sin and ignorance, spiritual healers implicate disturbed auras and shamans cite demonic possession.

In light of this "controversy", the legislature sets up a school board that includes not only doctors, but also shamans, faith healers and, for good measure a few "psychic surgeons" who pretend to extract veal cutlets from patients' intact bodies. Taking account of these diverse views, the board recommends that from now on all teaching of modern medicine must be accompanied by a discussion of its weaknesses, including the "evidence" that Aids results from drug use and malnutrition, as well as from impure thoughts and evil spirits. And our failure to understand the complexities of chronic fatigue syndrome might be seen as reflecting its causation by an inscrutable and supernatural designer.
