Video: Hitchens vs. Mos Def
Here’s a highly entertaining segment of Bill Maher’s show, with Salman Rushdie and Christopher Hitchens squaring off against … rapper Mos Def, who gives new meaning to the word “incoherent.”

I've spent most of the day being astounded by the amount of mucus the human body can produce when infected by a rhinovirus. (No, not a RINO virus, wise guys.) If we could harness the power of mucus, we wouldn't be worrying about global warmening.

The fun here is the massive hypocrisy and discomfort of the white men and Rushdi (who is in the position that the apartheid South Africans would have called Honorary White Man) when meeting an ignorant Black Man. Mos Def is a poor parody of Muhammed Ali who stated the Viet Cong have done nothing to him.

The rhino has a symbiotic relationship with oxpeckers, also called tick birds. In Swahili the tick bird is named "askari wa kifaru," meaning "the rhino's guard." The bird eats ticks it finds on the rhino and noisily warns of danger.

Disappointing is Mos Def, who asks questions so stupid ("What is the Taliban's political goal?"), that it almost seems that he is asking them rhetorically.

The big picture problem here is that a misplaced sense of democracy, coupled with an arrogant elitist contempt for the masses and stirred with fear of the potentially violent "other" have laid the public square open to idiocy. 50 years ago it would have been normal to have someone walk up to a Mos Def and say "You are an idiot and no your opinion is not worth as much as anyone else's so shut up and go away." The problem starts in school where children learn that teachers can not discipline them for being obnoxious and contrarian so they develop this tired trick.

My biggest problem with moderated roundtables like this is when the moderator doesn't allow a response to be finished. Hot baths raise the body temperature like a fever
Check out this Life Hack for beating the flu
“At the first sign that you are catching a flu, heat your whole body temperature up to a mild fever, 102.0° F, by any means readily available. Use an oral fever thermometer to get it right. Ideally this self-induced fever can be produced by immersing yourself in a bath of 103° F water for five minutes followed by raising the water temperature to 106° F for about ten minutes. After adjusting the bath to 106° F, which will feel a bit uncomfortable, just lie there deep in the water and soak in the heat and let the tub temperature drift back down to about 105° F, by the end of the ten minute period. You may have to reheat the water to keep it at 105°-106° F. Use your oral thermometer to measure your mouth temperature and the bath temperature alternately until your mouth temperature reaches 102° F. After the heat soak get out and towel off. Then rest and perspire and let your body adjust to its natural temperature. Do this two times per day for three days and once a day for three more days. That’s it.”
In discussing this procedure with my friends it seems near impossible for them not to get the wrong idea—that they are cooking the flu germs. It can not be emphasized enough that this is wrong. You can’t kill the germs without killing yourself first because they can take more heat than you can. What is happening with this procedure is that you are alerting your body’s natural infection fighting mechanisms, such as the macrophages, that there is work that they need to be attending to.

MosDef launches into an off-topic ad hominem rhetoric filled diatribe in the last 1/4 of the conversation... i.e: "you don't know me.. i've got nothing to prove," etc etc etc ad infinitum.
Completely dodged Hitchens' answer to his question.
More troubling is the number of audience members who clapped for that shit.

The attractive lady with the glowing lungs walks around talking about her deal, then describes the drug. She says,"Symbicort contains Ford Motor Oil". Now, why would they put that in a drug? What about Chevrolet motor oil? Heck, the car companies don't even make motor oil! Also, why do they only show her silhouette? Is she in the Witness Protection Program? I'm confused.

Disappointing is Mos Def, who asks questions so stupid ("What is the Taliban's political goal?"), that it almost seems that he is asking them rhetorically.
Even more disappointing: Why did he go on national television so unprepared? If you want to find out about the Taliban, surely you could read at least one book that would keep you from asking the idiotic questions that he did. Yet he didn't seem the slightest bit embarrassed by his ignorance. And the crowd, at times, rewarded his idiocy with applause. As sad a pop culture spectacle as I've ever seen.

This guy cannot be gotten through to. His entire world view is based on the "community" he calls his own, where people like the Black Panther he mentioned end up in jail for no reason at all, so therefore he has a reason not to trust anything or anybody.

Zycam will shorten the duration of the cold; saltwater will prevent it from happening in the first place.

Yes. And you know what it means when they say "I have a right to feel that." It means that it overpowers all other rational thought and ideology. In the liberals point of view that would mean that Mos Def's ideas are more worthy of "empowerment" because he "deserves" more credit because of his "needs." Thus the leftists would see Mos Def as being right and Hitchens as being wrong.

Another cop killer, the left loves and reveres cop killers. We have Mumia here in Philly. Witnesses saw him fire the gun, then get hit, then get arrested, never taking their eyes off the guy. The gun he used was registered to him, and he was wearing and empty holster when arrested - but he claim - he didn't go it and the many on the left believe him.

For the Zicam afficionados, including the sickest man on the radio Rush Limbaugh
Zinc has generally been administered by the oral route in studies of prevention or treatment of the common cold. The purpose of these studies was to evaluate the effectiveness of intranasal zinc gluconate for prevention of experimental rhinovirus infection and illness. Ninety-one volunteers, 41 treated with active medication and 50 treated with placebo, received study medication for 3 days, were inoculated with rhinovirus, and then were treated with study medication for an additional 6 days. Rhinovirus infection was documented in 37 (74%) of the 50 placebo-treated volunteers and in 32 (78%) of the 41 volunteers treated with active medication. Zinc treatment had no effect on total symptom score, rhinorrhea, nasal obstruction, or the proportion of infected volunteers who developed clinical colds. These data do not support a role for intranasal zinc gluconate for prevention or treatment of the common cold.

One way to tell is to blow your nose and examine the mucus; if it is more or less clear and not yellowish then it is probably hay fever. If it is sort of yellow then you have an infection.

He must listen to the voices in his head. What was funny is that he kept asking the guys with him there to explain to him about the Taliban and Al Qaeda platforms, and then said he doesn't just believe what people tell him. He's his own man, he makes up his own mind.

Mos Def, however, represents arguably the first time that an artist, solidly wedded to the orthodoxy of the religion, has stepped into mainstream popularity with a complete, well-articulated Islamic message as part and parcel of that popularity.
Born Dante Smith in 1974, the 27-year-old Brooklyn, N.Y., native first learned the importance of Islam from his father, who was a member of the Nation of Islam before becoming an active member in the community of Imam Warithdeen Muhammad (the son of Nation of Islam founder Elijah Muhammad who brought the Nation of Islam into orthodoxy in 1976).
Raised by his mother in Brooklyn, across the river from his father's home in New Jersey, Mos didn't receive a formal introduction to Islam until adolescence. "I got my first exposure to Islam when I was 13," says Mos. "My dad taught me how to make wudhu [the ritual ablution Muslims perform before prayer]."
It wasn't for another six years, when he was 19, that he took his shahada, the Muslim declaration of faith. He'd gotten there by reading and personal reflection and after getting to know other Muslim rappers, like Ali Shaheed Muhammad and Q-Tip of the group A Tribe Called Quest.

Tackling a broad swath of issues that include water rights, African American self-esteem, and the destiny of humankind, Mos enlightens the listener as well as entertains. Taking on such issues, he says, is an Islamic mandate. "If Islam's sole interest is the welfare of mankind, then Islam is the strongest advocate of human rights anywhere on Earth," says Mos.

Charles,
I received an email response from a school board member where the High School had invited Bill Ayers to speak:
Thank you for expressing your concern in a thoughtful manner. There have been many negative emails on this matter and I will respond.
I agree that as a society we cannot tolerate violent change. We must always seek the peaceful resolution. That aspect seems to be the general theme of everyone's concern.
In my opinion, given the well publicized history of events and documented actions (as well as the tenor and response of the community)......Mr. Ayers falls short of the desired persona. It is clear that he is not welcome in our Community.
There will be an update on the disposition of this matter next week. I sincerely appreciate your willingness to express your concern. The mark of a great Community is the care given to their children in promoting learning and providing protection as they feel is appropriate.
Please accept my thanks for voicing your concern.
Thanks,

DistantThunder, your 'remedy' sounds very interesting but I wonder if Charles actually has the 'bug' or just a very bad case of 'hay fever'? In my part of the world the place is covered with yellow pollen and I am suffering just like him because of it.
One way to tell is to blow your nose and examine the mucus; if it is more or less clear and not yellowish then it is probably hay fever. If it is sort of yellow then you have an infection.

A viral infection isn't necessarily bacterial, so viral mucus can be clear too. I worked for an ENT. Mr DT has bad allergies and once drove his jeep off road through a field of rag weed. His eyes swelled closed with in 5 minutes, and he had a systemic allergic reaction - very scary.

This family-oriented approach is most evident in Mos' choices about his management. His mother, Sheron, and father, Abdul Rahman--whom he refers to affectionately as Umi and Abi--handle everything, from media calls to general management and corporate strategy. Mos' brother tackles technical matters in the studio, and when it's time to hit the road, the entire clan travels together. "I just try to stay around the right people," says Mos. "I try to stay around family...[try] to stay around people who believe what I believe and [beg] Allah to help me."
His strategy has worked. After the critical acclaim for "Black on Both Sides," Mos was tapped by MTV last year for a recurring role on "The Lyricists Lounge Show." He also appeared in Spike Lee's "Bamboozled" and ABC's "NYPD Blue." Then earlier this year, Nike gave its seal of approval by choosing his track "Umi Says" to score commercials launching Michael Jordan's "Brand Jordan" Nike division. "They just called and said, 'Mos, we'd like to use 'Umi Says,'" he says of the low-key negotiations. "That was it...I wasn't savvy in my presentation at all. It was very natural and plain.

Different Types of the Flu
The first flu virus was identified in the 1930s (although the flu has probably existed for centuries). Since then, scientists have classified influenza viruses into 3 types, creatively named
A, B, and C.Influenza Type A is the most common and also the scariest of the three influenzas, causing the most serious epidemics in history.
Influenza Type B flu outbreaks also can cause epidemics, but the disease it produces generally is milder than that caused by type A.
Influenza Type C flu viruses, on the other hand, have never been connected with a large epidemic, usually just causing mild respiratory infections similar to the common cold.

I think Mos Def shows a good example of why we need to defend science education and the ability arrive at conclusions based on empirical evidence. He's a conspiracy nut- he doesn't trust the news, or evidence against anyone he thinks is a victim of the system. (No wonder he converted- it offered him a larger community of "oppressed victims"). When we as a society don't train the mind's of kids to review data to support our conclusions, we end up with people like Mos Def.

Assata Shakur: The government’s terrorist is our community’s heroine
by Mos Def
Early in May, the federal government issued a statement in which they labeled Joanne Chesimard, known to most in the Black community as Assata Shakur, as a domestic terrorist. In so doing, they also increased the bounty on her head from $150,000 to an unprecedented $1,000,000.

re: #275 MandyManners
Giving back to the community is a high priority for Mos. Last spring, he performed at a benefit for breast cancer awareness in Lake Tahoe, Calif., and he will perform in Los Angeles at a benefit to support the legal defense fund of national Muslim leader and former Black Panther activist Imam Jamil al-Amin (formerly H. Rap Brown), who is awaiting trial in Atlanta on controversial murder charges.
SNIP
Nothing "controversial" about it. Mr al-Amin is now enjoying a lifetime vacation at Supermax in Florence, CO.
On March 16, 2000, in Fulton County, Georgia, Sheriff's deputies Ricky Kinchen and Aldranon English went to al-Amin's home to serve an arrest warrant for failing to appear in court on a traffic citation of speeding and impersonating a police officer (he showed the officer his honorary badge that was given to him by the city for cleaning up the "West End"). After stopping in front of al-Amin's home and determining that nobody was there they drove away and were passed by a black Mercedes that was heading towards the home. Kinchen (the more senior deputy) watched the suspect vehicle and turned the car around and drove up to it stopping nose to nose. English approached the Mercedes and told the occupant to show his hands. The occupant opened fire with a .223 rifle. English ran but was hit four times. Kinchen was shot with the rifle and a 9mm handgun. The following day, Kinchen died of his wounds in a Georgia hospital. English survived his wounds and identified al-Amin as the shooter from six photos he was shown while recovering in the hospital.

I disagree, but only slightly. It is my opinion that he already has his mind made up on the issue, and does not care what anyone tells him that might be contrary.
I do not think his intention behind those questions were to verify anything, but a very poor attempt at asking questions that he was foolish enough to think were cleverly worded enough to get the others on the panel to step on their respective dicks.
His amateur efforts at employing the Socratic Method were easily thwarted, and so he tried to drown out wiser words by babbling over his opponents points.

With the closure of the P-I, a number of reporters are looking for jobs. Two environmental reporters have a new employer.Seattle environmental think tank Sightline announed that the two will now be working there. They noted on their blog: "In addition, two veteran reporters from the Seattle Post-Intelligencer -- Jennifer Langston and Lisa Stiffler -- will be teaming up to edit our Sightline Daily news service."
The transition from environmental reporter to environmental advocate should be seamless.

Well, we just have a board meeting, and they finally got around to giving me the info on my stock options, so they better still be around next November when I can actually exercise them.
Maybe this time, of all the times I've had stock options, they'll actually be worth something.
But I never count on that.
Just in case they're in the money, make sure you have enough ready cash on hand to exercise them. Too many people make the mistake of "cashless" exercising, needlessly incurring tax at ordinary income tax rates. (I'm assuming that because they're not in the money already that they're ISO, not non-qualified options.) You have to meet two mutually exclusive holding periods if the options are ISO: you have to hold the stock two years from the date of grant; one year from the date of exercise in order to get long-term capital gains tax treatment.

"Hot" foods can give you up to 45 minutes of breathability. Had dingue twice and just being able to breathe normally was a treat.
Chinese works better than Mexican. Masabi is good.
The zinc based stuff helps/ zicam, zinc cough drops, etc.

Famous Rapper/Actor MOS DEF Uses Jews as an Example about JENA 6 Case
On Mos Def's 2004 album The New Danger a song called "The Rape Over" had the following lyrics (excerpt): white men is runnin' this rap shit, Corporate forces runnin' this rap shit, Some tall Israeli is runnin' this rap shit, We poke out our asses for a chance to cash in. Cocaine, is runnin' this rap shit, 'Dro, 'yac and e-pills is runnin this rap shit,,,, ....MTV is runnin' this rap shit, Viacom is runnin' this rap shit, AOL and Time Warner runnin' this rap shit, Quasi-homosexuals is runnin' this rap shit high-placed executives temporarily made Mos take the song off releases of the album, citing clearance issues with Jay-Z and The Doors, a band which the song samples.
The song has been called anti-Semitic for its veiled reference to Israeli American record executive Lyor Cohen (the "tall Israeli" who then was head of the The Island Def Jam Music Group). However the song does appear on the final album sold by Geffen Records

I say the best way to stay healthy is to eat well and get enough sleep. Trying to stay healthy by avoiding germs? I say not so much. I think you build immunity by exposing yourself to germs. I am dying over here, first time sick in five years. Lingering cold, painful caogh, muscle aches. Others have diarrhea. Going on 8 days. I am pissed.
One treatment that can't hurt is Oregano Oil - it is also known as the ancient biblical herb hyssop. It is has anti-fungal and anti-biotic properties and boosts the immune system. I've been very impressed with the results and we keep a store on hand after MR DT was laid up with a bad case of food poisioning after eating raw sushi. It worked wonders.
What is Oil of oregano?
What is Oil of Oregano?
Numerous university studies have shown that Oil of Oregano is a highly potent purifier that provides many benefits for human health. Oil of Oregano is a natural substance that is extracted from wild oregano plants, and two key compounds found in it are carvacrol and thymol. Studies have shown that both of these compounds have significant effects on harmful microorganisms that cause many illnesses in humans. It is important not to confuse Oil of Oregano with common oregano that is used as a spice for cooking. Common oregano is typically Origanum Marjoram, while Oil of Oregano is derived from Origanum Vulgare.
Oil of Oregano can be purchased as either a liquid or as capsules/tablets. In both forms, it is important to verify that the oil is derived from the proper potent oregano plant, and that the carvacrol concentration is at least 70%.
What are the Benefits of Oil of Oregano?
The ancient Greeks were one of the first people to recognize oregano oil for its health benefits and medicinal qualities. It is known to be a potent antiviral, antibacterial, antifungal, and antiparasitic oil that can reduce pain and inflammation and effectively fight off infections. Some of the specific benefits of Oil of Oregano are:
Destroying organisms that contribute to skin infections and digestive problems.
Strengthening the immune system.
Increasing joint and muscle flexibility.
Improving respiratory health.

The composition of the volatile oil of Mexican oregano (Lippia graveolens HBK) isolated by steam distillation was investigated by means of column chromatography, gas chromatography and mass spectrometry. A total of 33 components were identified including 22 hydrocarbons, 4 alcohols, 4 ethers, 2 phenols and 1 ketone. Of the 33 components observed in the present study 7 were identified in Mexican oregano for the first time.

Oil of Mediterranean oregano Oreganum vulgare was orally administered to 14 adult patients whose stools tested positive for enteric parasites, Blastocystis hominis, Entamoeba hartmanni and Endolimax nana. After 6 weeks of supplementation with 600 mg emulsified oil of oregano daily, there was complete disappearance of Entamoeba hartmanni (four cases), Endolimax nana (one case), and Blastocystis hominis in eight cases. Also, Blastocystis hominis scores declined in three additional cases. Gastrointestinal symptoms improved in seven of the 11 patients who had tested positive for Blastocystis hominis. He also has a younger sister, Ces (Casey) Smith. Mos Def and his brothers are all converts to Islam.[3] Mos Def was first exposed to Islam at age 13 by his father. This shit is run by fake Christians, fake politicians
Look at they mansions, then look at the conditions you live in
All they talk about is terrorism on television
They tell you to listen, but they don't really tell you they mission
They funded Al-Qaeda, and now they blame the Muslim religion

ShamWow Guy Arrested For Beating Up Prostitute
By Chris Walters, 7:59 PM on Fri Mar 27 2009, 39,771 views
Slap chop to the face! Vince Shlomi, aka the ShamWow Guy, aka You're Gonna Love My Nuts, was "arrested last month on a felony battery charge following a violent confrontation with a prostitute in his South Beach hotel room," reports the Smoking Gun.[Link: consumerist.com...]

It looks like Bill Maher was trying to divert the attention away from his demented biased views by having Mos Def on. Because when he has more than one person on his show that actually knows what they are talking about, he does not know what to do. The only time that I have seen him silent, is when Tony Snow completely shut him and the other guests up by showing his intelligence. It was such a beautiful moment.

As a HGTTG fan, I thought the movie did an ok job of putting into two hours, material from a number of different books, and some new material.
The TV show and the radio production evidently had more time to better play out the story.
But I thought the movie was good.
I remember the radio serial and the TV production. They were memorable. Take my word for it the movie did a lousy job.

Well, according to her bio (on the link) "Jean Scheid has enjoyed freelance writing for 15 years and her broadest experience is on green and alternative lifestyle topics, where she has written for many clients and The Taos (N.M) News."
Maybe that's why you've never heard of her.
Yeah, I was just wondering if anyone had heard of her before. 15 years of writing and she writes like a hack. Seriously bad writing for someone who is supposed to be a pro.

However, from your link: "There’s another flaw in the online approach: With the egg roll more than two weeks from the date of the online ticket distribution, as opposed to at most three days in the past, the Obama administration has created a huge opening for the online scalping of free tickets."

This guy cannot be gotten through to. His entire world view is based on the "community" he calls his own, where people like the Black Panther he mentioned end up in jail for no reason at all, so therefore he has a reason not to trust anything or anybody.
Terrible reasoning. Actually, none at all. But that's the reasoning he grew up surrounded by, and that's what he'll take to his grave.
It's the same reasoning that could lead an entire neighborhood (and writers for the NY Times and AP) to praise a psychotic cop killer and child rapist like they just did in Oakland.

Mos Def was actually applying state-of-the-art Liberal feigned ignorance in claiming that he had no opinion because he doesn't trust the media. Hitchens might have gotten to the point quicker if he inquired about Mr. Def's opinion of President Bush, and how he may have arrived at that opinion. But I do respect Hitchens in observing that anyone who claims such ignorance could only be an idiot.
I suspect that this demonstration of brutal honesty will require the 5th column media to make an extra effort to ostracize Mr. Hitchens.

668 | NY Nana Sat, Mar 28, 2009 11:02:29pm |
When I say that I am glad to be here, I really mean it. We were in Brooklyn taking care of our 2 1/2 year old grandson, who has energy to donate to about 100 people. When we put him to sleep, I dozed off watching TV, as did NY Grampa. I never do this normally.
I am a diabetic, on insulin, and felt like I was hypoglycemic. I took my blood glucose level, and it was 36....close to falling into a coma. I have never had a blood glucose level that low in all these years. And after this long, a diabetic can be hypo, and not realize it, as I found out any number of times, but I was never this low. Luckily I had a tube of glucose tablets that I always carry when we are out. There is a big bottle of them at home, too. I took them, and NY Grampa made me some microwave popcorn. That and the tablets helped. And there were a few other things I had to eat to bring up my blood glucose.
I am just now realizing what might have happened if I had been even asleep for 15 minutes more. Still shuddering. Please, anyone who is a diabetic on insulin, anyone who has a diabetic relative or friend, a co-worker, a neighbor, make sure that you know what to do if this happens. It can be a matter of life or death...as I realize I was in. I have a Glucogen pen that can be used if I pass out, but never take it with me...from now on? It goes where I go. I never go out alone, as I am physically disabled, so NY Grampa, who is also a diabetic, is with me..I actually diagnosed his diabetes, BTW...long story.
At any rate, here is the info on hypoglycemia, in case anyone needs it...I only hope that it will never be needed.
Going to get some things done, test again, and go to sleep!
G'nite,all. Sweet dreams.
See you very happily in the AM! ;)

Mos Def can certainly flow, but on issues such as this he is woefully (perhaps even willfully) ignorant.
It was my understanding that Mos Def bills himself as a Muslim rapper, so I think that "willfully" is understating the case.

He just asked a dumb question, while playing naive, and he got called out on it. His politics are just empty rhetoric, but even when it was explained to him, he still refused to take the point....so why was he on the show? I don't think he came off incoherent, he's just ignorant and wants to buy into this Lefty fantasy narrative.
Nobody on the show managed to get through to him, and that's the problem we face. What you just saw represents a large youth population group think in our country. Instead of writing them off as incoherent we need to figure out how to get through to such zombies, or at least stop them from thinking their uneducated voices are valid.
Actually, he is incoherent. I watched that video all the way through, glutton for punishment that I am, and I don't think Mos Def managed to complete a single simple declarative sentence. He's literally babbling in sentence fragments.
I imagine me an anti-drug ad: "This is your brain," picture of Chris Hitchens. "This is your brain on crack," picture of Mos Def.

I've spent most of the day being astounded by the amount of mucus the human body can produce when infected by a rhinovirus. (No, not a RINO virus, wise guys.) If we could harness the power of mucus, we wouldn't be worrying about global warmening.
There is a product sold here in Canada, called Cold FX. It's capsules based on a refined extract from ginseng plants. They claim to have a patent on a method of producing an extract with uniform and repeatable potency. The bottle (I have one in front of me as I type.) calls for 3 capsules 3 times a day for the first day, 2 capsules 3 times a day for the second day, and one capsule 3 times a day for the third day. If you begin this regimen at the first hint of a cold coming on, the cold will generally be averted. That means the first scratchy throat, or the first sniffle, or the first general bodily aches and pains. Once you have a full-blown cold, it's too little, too late.
I've used it for several years now, and I'd say my "batting average" with it is about .650, for what it's worth. Good idea to have a bottle on hand, as delaying overnight until the store opens is delaying too long. You need to start popping the stuff as soon as you sense the onset of a cold.
Here's their Website.

re: #675 BignJames
Thanks. I am a retired RN, BTW, and have been in excellent control once I was diagnosed, and immediately placed on insulin. I was close to 500 when diagnosed...even with so much diabetes on both sides, I was in a state of denial re the many symptoms, and won't go into what the endocrinologist who I was using to treat my Hashimoto's Thyroiditis, an auto-immune disease, did. Let's just say that when his secretary called to give me my thyroid levels, and said 'Oh, by the way, Dr. A*hole said to tell you that you are a diabetic'. He was on a ski holiday, and would be back in 2 weeks. I asked what I was supposed to do? 'Get a glucose meter and test'. I told her what she could do, asked to be taken off his rota, and to send me my records (in NY State they are the patients' property)..I called the Joslin Clinic, in my native Boston, and they gave me a referral to an endocrinologist, who I called ASAP, and was told I would be taken on an emergency basis when I gave my blood glucose level.
He put me on tight control, and a lot of the symptoms I had? Gone! So far, bli ayin hara, no complications in nearly 15 years, and I also watch NY Grampa like a hawk!
What scares me more than diabetes, etc., is what will happen if The One passes his version of a 'No Care' system...as a senior citizen? Ice floe in Alaska!
I had to take another snack, as my blood glucose was a bit too close to hypoglycemia, and will test again, and then hopefully get to go to sleep!
I refuse to let diabetes get me...I will beat it into submission! ;)
BTW, I am considered to be a Type 1 and a half, requiring 3 shots of insulin/day...Humalog twice a day, and Lantus before I go to sleep.
Just checked. All is well, took Lantus, and am off to sleep!
G'nite all!

OK,
I just watched that astonishingly painful clip. I will say my snarky mean two cents to get it out of my system and then move on to a more serious comment.
Snarky mean comment: Kids, don't do drugs. This is what will be left of your brain.
More serious comment:
Much like giving beauty queens and local Reverends the same footing as actual scientists the same footing in an evolution debate, this show is another example of the extreme anti-intellectualism in America and the resentment that people Americans feel for people who actually know something.
It is not that there are no Americans (or others on American television) with a clue, it is that they are given the same validity as the puppet show. Exactly when was the last time you heard some narcissistic, self inflated and second functionally grade educated show-biz twit sound enlightened about anything? We could ask the very valid question of, what in God's name allows us to even consider listening to them?
The sad, but true, answer is that if we correctly say to these prats that their opinions are useless, that they do not know their asses from holes in the ground, and that they are in general, wastes of human potential, and should therefore shut up and let those with educated and non-intoxicant addled minds talk about grown-up matters, we also have to be non-hypocrites and actually shut up and learn ourselves when confronted with someone who knows more than we do. Pride goeth before the fall. What we have reaped in this culture is a sense that everyone is entitled to everything without actually earning it - this includes respect of one's knowledge in the form of believing that one's own shattered thoughts and meaningless ramblings have the same validity of actual knowledge.
Here are some old time conservative values (That I admit I can use improvement on myself):
1. Listen more.
2. Read more.
3. Respect teachers and scholars.
4. Consider it a personal duty to make oneself into a teacher and a scholar (of something).
5. Do not waste time on fools. Do not suffer them gladly.
6. Try to be humble.
How positively beautiful it would have been if someone would have said: We just answered your question several times. If you do not believe us, then why did you ask in the first place? If you did not understand us then ask about what you don't understand and stop posing.
This is what I would say to my kids in class - and I have had several that have reminded me of this twit. The difference though is that in a university setting, there is at least, the social structure that they actually do need to listen to me if they want to learn the material and do well on the exams - and they actually do assume that I know more about the topic then they do.
Why does it not work here? Mostly because, outside of a structured environment everyone believes that their opinion is golden. Had the others properly put that fool in his place, they would have appeared arrogant and rude and it would have no longer been an entertainment show. It would have been something to take seriously. People hate that. They like the illusion of intellectual discourse but not the reality of learning.
I am sick of this country at times. Someone should start reminding people that opinions are like assholes - everyone has one.

re#2 charles,
As a lover of Cuban cigars I have acute rhinitis/bronchitis problems about twice yearly.
After talking to an ENT colleague he told be to pour some very hotwater
into a bowl, put a towel over my head and inhale as much warm water vapour as possible.
I refined this method by adding a few drops of eugenol(clove )oil to the hot water, and found this treatment very effective (it does need repeating
every few hours depending on perceived discomfort.
The eugenol is useful insofar as it is bactericidal and analgesic as well as giving one the feeling that it's"doing me good".
On the subject of "the rapper"he's typical of brainless people the world over who imagine that they have a valid opinion substantiated( in their own mind)by mindless faith in the supernatural or a bankrupt political ideology.(eg. the unholy alliance between Islamism and the left)
Perhaps he'll give us the Koran in rap form, or the Taliban Trip, sometime soon.

Moron rap is a product of the very liberal, very racist white music business. It's liberal white racist music moguls who encourage the stupidest morons to paint a picture of the black community using a profanity laced 50 word vocabulary, a drum machine and nothing else in the way of talent or originality.
Modern rappers are quite simply the Step and Fetch-it's of our time. The modern minstrel show is alive and well. This guy's job is to make white people feel superior, and he does it well.
I grew up with black musicians like Stevie Wonder. He's wrong on many issues but he's talented, intelligent and articulate. No place for somebody like him in the modern music business. Oh, and he's a devout Christian as well. Strike 3.

Info to the muslim bit is to be had at #208 Gus 802 and #210 Aviator => Link.
He was rambling on and on incoherently, refusing to believe facts and interpretations of said facts and then got defensive when they were directly challenged. No in fact he kept on babbling just to keep the others in the discussion from saying anything. (Worked with Maher and Rushdie, but not with THE HITCHENS) Mos Def is not just another idiot, he uses the very same discussion tactics that so many moonbats and islamist-excuser's are using to defend the indefensible. But once challenged he became completely incoherent.

Now that we got that out of the way, is there anything of merit left to be said by this guy?

Not only was his argument a non argument - Bill M shows us once again what a trite useless skin flap he is

The strength Mr M. Definitely talks about is the strength to be the loudest for the longest and an absolute steadfastness in the resistance to facts and reason no matter how persuasive they may be. It's what most people would call 'braying idiocy'.

This video just reminds me why I can't stand anything that sounds like Hip hop or rap. A fly sipping dogshit has more brain cells than Most Def.

The audience members exemplify retardation in that we hear their hands strike together every time Mos Def exhorts his passion for holding an unpopular idea. It's a shame that the audience views him as if he were David throwing stones at Goliath.
735 | landline Sun, Mar 29, 2009 10:43:38am |
If you believe that Mr. Def is that clueless, you are allowing him to dupe you. He is a stone cold hater of the West, Christianity, and whites. The extreme skepticism he espouses is a tactic to disrupte discussion and harass whitey -since he doesn't have the education or reasoning skills to engage in an honest debate. When Hitchens -correctly- calls him out for using this tactic he resorts to ghetto posturing and phony assertions of bravery for "holding an unpopular position in his mind." It is hardly novel or courageous to question the West and defend the Muslim world since this viewpoint is shielded by political correctness. Is Mr. Def truly as "skeptical" when it comes to "facts" that make America and the West look egregious? No. I doubt he requires a certified translation or primary source material for the 9-11 Troof DREK he considers gospel.

I could hardly understand what the hell he was saying....and that made me feel smart...

Hey, I expect Rushdie and Hitchens to be brilliant and on target on this topic.
I don't know Mo Def, and certainly don't expect him to be an expert on foreign affairs.
But frankly, I was impressed as hell that a rapper like Mo Def knew as much as he does. In the first few minutes I had a lot of respect for this guy... I think that with a little more patience he could have been brought around.
Then he was picked apart as if he was supposed to be a Cambridge political professor (instead of just a smart street kid).
Mo Def started in by asking an honest question. Hitchens (lord love him) was frankly being a total asshole by the last 2 minutes of this debate, when I think the whole discussion could have been directed a different way.
Just because Hitch has a correct political opinion, doesn't give him the license to alienate and offend for no reason. I think that he did more damage than good... in failing to take this rapper (and his many fans) seriously.
Sorry: Dumb move by a very smart guy.

I had to quit after four minutes lest the dumb jump off of him and onto me.
I only lasted about 3 minutes at which time I started feeling concussed. Just listening to Bill Maher causes short term memory loss. Add Mos Def to the mix and instant brain sushi which rendered me mos or les def.

re: #147 reine.de.tout
This guy cannot be gotten through to. His entire world view is based on the "community" he calls his own, where people like the Black Panther he mentioned end up in jail for no reason at all, so therefore he has a reason not to trust anything or anybody.
Terrible reasoning. Actually, none at all. But that's the reasoning he grew up surrounded by, and that's what he'll take to his grave.
Yes...he despises everything that made him who he is today...
A millionaire recording artist/actor living in splendor and adored by millions of teenage wanna-be-gankstas and part of the wicked, selfish, greedy corporate conspiracy...

OK... quick amendment to my above posting.
I just spent a few minutes Googling "Mos Def":
[Link: www.beliefnet.com...] (thanks "callahan23", post 729)
[Link: www.danielpipes.org...]
[Link: listing-index.ebay.com...]
[Link: cityfile.com...]
Like I said, "I don't know Mo[s] Def..." I hadn't read any of the earlier posts... I just watched the video.
Well, now that I know him a little better, I see that (in addition to being a "smart street kid") he definitely is a political animal, a Muslim, and likely an anti-semite. I didn't know that history.
So, I'll modify the nature of my comment from a purely rhetorical perspective, as a debater:
If Hitch knew this guy's history, he should have laid it out before his attack. That would have given some context to the debate.
Because he failed to do that, I would say that to the casual viewer (who probably knows little about ether Hitchens or Mos Def political bakgrounds) it was Hitchens that appeared to be out of line.
Thanks to the Lizardoids who do the homework... in the future I'll try to scan them before making my own comments.
744 | gulfloafer Sun, Mar 29, 2009 12:40:10pm |
Mos Def should change his name to Mos Devoid of Grey Matter. I think Maher probably encouraged Mos Def to get high before he came on the show. Nobody can be that damn dumb. I kept waiting for Hitchens to ask Mos Def if he was on drugs or truely this ignorant.

And when someone tries to explain to him he ignores it.

re: #743 Dave Brown
Dave,
I'm glad that you took the time to research this schmuck -he has the mindset of the enemy through and through. Since he has been a Muslim for 16 years and he is also a political activist, how is it possible that he does not know the "platform" of
radical Islamists? And how could CNN get away with mistranslating Al Queda videos for the last 8 years and not get called out on it?
751 | BLBfootballs Sun, Mar 29, 2009 2:12:06pm |
re: #740 Dave Brown
Couldn't disagree more. Mos Def repeatedly asked a question, and when people tried to answer him he repeatedly refused to accept the answer. His goal wasn't to gain clarity or more information -- it was to simply assert and then reassert his original "belief".
What happened in the last 3 minutes or so was that Hitchens wised up that what was going on here wasn't a dialogue, but a face-off between the knowledgeable and the proudly ignorant. Once that was understood Hitchens was on a perfectly appropriate track.

It's too bad that there are so many ignorant fools like this Mos Def in the United States.
Seeing this kind of ignoramus on a popular TV show makes me sad. How many of these stupid people are running around in the United States?
I hope Mr. Mos Def gets taxed bashed under Obama's new tax plan to tax the "rich." That would be some kind of ironic justice.
No worries for Mos Def on the Obama Tax plan...He'll just have his corporate hacks raise the price of his music on to those mindless suburban kids that spend all their parents hard earned money on making phony corporate hypocrites like Mos Def wealthy elitists...

Mos [strike]Def[/strike]Moronic did not just ask an "innocent" question. He was following the same tactics that many ignorant moonbats do when they have an agenda.
Mos [strike]Def[/strike]Moronic is just another terrorist defending Muslim, who has in the past defended Al-Qaeda, thinks that 9/11 was an inside job and the idiot even believes that the moon landings were faked.
I have no comments on either his music or acting skills, but to even think about putting such an intellectual midget VS the likes of Hitchens on the same tv show together is pure comedic gold.
My favorite Bill Maher show, I don't really watch it much, Maher is a dishonest jerk IMO, was when Hitchens gives the finger to Maher's ignorant audience a few times.

Hi Dave.... Whoa, OK looks like I missed it the first time! Cheers for being open-minded and willing to do some research. It really does matter. Those are some useful links you posted up there.
Interesting that Hitchens didn't feel out of line at all to me personally.... but I'm already quite familiar with Hitchens's abrasive and aggressive style ('If only he could use those powers only for good...!') and I'd also wager I'm not too representative of most viewers' reactions.

I'm a huge Mos Def fan; if any one here enjoys hip hop I highly recommend his CD "Black Star", made in conjunction with Talib Kweli.
That being said.....I was disappointed after watching this clip, but only for 30 seconds. Then I remembered that we should not look to entertainers for anything remotely resembling intelligent political analysis.
I love his music....but don't really care what he has to say about politics or other issues of domestic/global import.

765 | azul93gt Tue, Mar 31, 2009 8:26:27pm |
When Mos Def through out his 'question' it was his way of casting incredulity on the idea of the Taliban/Al Quaeda being the bad guys. Mos Def is so used to being around sicophantic lefty admirers and other like minded people that he only expected gratuitous over-flowing praise. He never thought that he would be called on his statement so he was taken aback and un-prepared to respond. No valid response exists anyway.
The same thing would happen to Obama if he were ever made to answer for some of his equally vacuous statements.
