YouTube Bans James Randi

Media • Views: 8,831

You have got to be kidding me.

YouTube has suspended the account of the James Randi Foundation, one of the foremost rationalist organizations in the United States?

This is an outrage. YouTube — where you can easily find disgusting, violent jihadi videos, and vile antisemitic garbage like this — is now protecting the delicate feelings of creationists and phony psychics. Shame on YouTube. Shame.

I can't listen to youtube here at home, and I gather there's a narration.

If psychics (!) are being protected, pop culture is doomed.

6 Dark_Falcon  Mon, Mar 30, 2009 8:30:41pm

YouTube seems to suspend accounts too easily. They need to look more carefully at material being questioned instead of just pulling vids that get complaints.

I must be more tired than I thought.

I thought that headline was "Youtube Bans Bra."

The voice in the video sounds like the same one in some of the creationist smackdown videos I've seen- I think gmsc linked to one last night.

Randi.org reports:

Our YouTube account has been suspended, which means all of the Randi Speaks and other JREF videos are temporarily unavailable. We're researching the problem, and will be back online as soon as possible. Thanks very much for your patience.

I'm sure this will be settled soon.

I never saved Randi's youtube addresses because I always felt they'd be on the site forever, but from now on I will backup a copy on my computer. Thanks youtube for convincing me to take videos from your site!

The only explanation that I have is that some fringe crowd organized and pelted youtube with complaints.

It's not as if youtube really has a clue about anything, they just want everyone to be happy... unless they are from Israel...

In fairness, Randi's latest youtube addresses have "attacked" (if you can call a reasoned argument that) Christianity. So I'm betting it were some po'ed religious loons constantly flagging the video that caused the suspension. I expect the account to be up in a day or two.

Aw, fuck YouTube. I considered registering there once so I could comment on stuff, but after seeing the caliber of commentary there (for most things, but not all) I decided against it.

I didn't see the point of going through the trouble of registration just to type the reply "You are a fucking idiot" thousands of times.

Anyway, one commenter on the vid that is the topic of this thread wonders:

Does this have anything to do with the fucking UN decision to block the criticism of religions?

Seems a valid question.

Randi's a magician. He cheats. He knows how cheating works. It's why he's so good at debunking.

To be good at cheating, you have to be rational. You have to understand reality, and how to manipulate others into believing that the impossible just happened.

Randi has always advocated using one's eyes and brain.

65 kynna  Mon, Mar 30, 2009 8:58:19pm

As Charles has pointed out, there's a large Creationist faction of fundamental Islam. They tend to get things done when they want them done.

Randi really should be researching other options. There's no reason why he shouldn't have his videos up and running again in a day or two. Depending on YouTube is like depending on the government. A bad idea.

The James Randi Educational Foundation has a standing offer of a million dollars to anyone who can prove that they are able to dowse—the woo-woo practice of detecting hidden objects like water, pipes, wires, etc., with the aid of metal or wooden rods. Here’s Randi’s classic response to a dowser who is threatening legal action unless Randi pays up.

For some reason the other side never liked my sarcasm or laughing at their feeble attempts to insult me.

There is a growing tendency of using our stance against socialism as an argument that we are against schools, military service, government, etc. by labeling them as socialist programs. I got the same argument from family earlier this month while visiting them after getting laid off. So they are trying to use our talking points against us. If anyone doesn't know this:

If you like a youtube video (or any other flash video - liveleak, etc...), and you think it might not be there forever, download RealPlayer. Even the free version has a browser plugin which allows you to download the actual video to your PC. I mouse over a video and a little box pops up with a link that says "download this video". I click the box, it downloads the video, I play anytime I want with Realplayer or any other player that plays .flv files. (I prefer winamp for playback of these).

100 MPH  Mon, Mar 30, 2009 9:14:39pm

This is a most outrageous story. James Randi censored! I can imagine how upset he rightfully must be tonight...and considering who they don't ban...what the hell is going on over there?

About a year ago, in response to a troubling vibe I felt emanating from the Obama presidential campaign, I created the following video under the pseudonym cakesecret. I utilized a song from one of my favorite bands, CAKE, to compare the Obama movement to a religious movement. Charles even posted the video here on LGF (he didn't know it was me). The video became viral almost immediately, quickly generating over 100K views before YouTube/Google censored it.

Even when I disagree with Randi, his view is very important. He is thoughtful and scientific. He sometimes takes on things that are beyond he and his compatriots to deal with. But the same is also true for those who conjecture on the other side. He is always rationale.

Hi Dianna - um, what's a "Dowser"?!

One who uses a variety of methods - my favorite is a plumb-bob - to find water or hidden objects.

Some people use a forked branch, held at an awkward angle. Others use a brass rod; one fellow I knew - quite a clever faker - used untwisted wire coathangers.

When you leave a note for Youtube, here's a reasonable suggestion from "Cluebot" at richarddawkins.net:

It's the official JREF channel that's been suspended, confirmed on the JREF website here:

[Link: www.randi.org...]

Misuse of YouTube's feedback systems (e.g. flagging campaigns, false DMCA claims and rating 'bots) to suppress contentious opinions is sadly a common occurrence, though this has to be one of the most respectable and high profile victims yet.

I say we should not place all - or even most - of the blame on YouTube, though. They're the one group of people we need on our side to get the misuse issues fixed, and we can both benefit from achieving that goal. No, blame the jerks who are gaming YouTube's system to remove that annoying cognitive dissonance from their little fantasy world. I doubt any of them ever thought of the trouble they cause for YouTube's staff when they indulge in this pathetic activity.

I suspect their chilling effects go much further than the victims who are silenced. YouTube's community moderators must surely be in despair for having to arbitrate over this nonsense; I can easily imagine all such content pushed out of public view simply because the chaos created by these malcontents is too costly to control.

Don't boycott YouTube. Help it become a better place for us. For a start, we need to persuade them that something as subjective as personal offence is an unworkable criterion for censorship. Just getting that established will help cut through a lot of the unwarranted flagging.

I checked the contact us thing on youtube, and your youtube user name is a required field, so you have to be a member to send it.

From this article, it looks like they don't police anything until someone complains.

A spokesman for YouTube said the site prefers to rely on its community to police itself. "We don't prescreen content," he said. "That's the key to our community. Fifteen hours of video uploaded every minute to YouTube. That's a staggering amount of user-generated content. We count on our community to know our community guidelines and flag content that violates the guidelines."

183 Taqiyyotomist  Mon, Mar 30, 2009 9:46:53pm

The UN resolution has more to do with Islam than anything else. Probably not newagers.

Then again, I used to read some Christian fiction, forgot the author's name, or the books for that matter. They featured angels that the narrarator could see and portray, but that the human characters could not. Cool books, in a speculative fiction sort of way, but they did have a lot of paranoia about Satanic Newagers in the UN, and in our schools (transcendental meditation being taught to gradeschoolers by the new-worlders, etc...)

Maybe the UN is full of newagers, as well as Islamists. It really would come as absolutely no surprise to me if the crystalworshippers and navel-gazers were represented as heavily as the OIC types. No surprise at all.

It may be an outrage, but it's not necessarily a surprise. YouTube has some questionable standards to begin with.

On a semi-related note, VDH swings for the bleachers again:

I think our president needs to invest more in the use of the third-person "government," since his speeches more and more center on the narcissistic "I" and "me." Even the car-takeover speech was "I-ed" to death. E.g.

My Auto Task Force

And so today, I am announcing that my administration will...

In this context, my administration will offer General Motors adequate working capital over the next 60 days. During this time, my team will be working closely with GM to produce a better business plan.

I am committed to doing all I can to see if a deal can be struck...

Now, I know that when people even hear the word "bankruptcy" it can be a bit unsettling, so let me explain what I mean. What I am talking about is..

What I am not talking about is a process where a company is broken up, sold off, and no longer exists. And what I am not talking about is having a company stuck in court for years...

It is my hope that the steps I am announcing...

let me say it as plainly as I can ...

I'm directing my team to take several steps.

I want to work with Congress to identify parts of the Recovery Act..

I am designating a new Director of Recovery for Auto Communities and Workers...

And on and on . . .

Emphasis his, btw.

OBAMA'S MOST PERILOUS LEGAL PICK

"JUDGES should interpret the Constitution according to other nations' legal "norms." Sharia law could apply to disputes in US courts. The United States constitutes an "axis of disobedience" along with North Korea and Saddam-era Iraq.

Those are the views of the man on track to become one of the US government's top lawyers: Harold Koh.

President Obama has nominated Koh -- until last week the dean of Yale Law School -- to be the State Department's legal adviser. In that job, Koh would forge a wide range of international agreements on issues from trade to arms control, and help represent our country in such places as the United Nations and the International Court of Justice."

206 lostlakehiker  Mon, Mar 30, 2009 10:10:27pm

James Randi won't cut off your head if you offend him.

He won't sue you with endless nuisance suits if you say, falsely and with intent to defame him, that his debunkings are bunkum.

He won't bring you revenue by cooking up a string of amazing, unbelievable, incredible videos demonstrating how autos can be made to run on pure water but the oil companies won't release the secret, or how water witching can work miracles except if somebody is rude, etc. etc.

He's not dangerous, he doesn't show sufficient respect for popular YouTubers, and his enemies are dangerous. YouTube isn't in business to be honest or rational. It bends with the wind.

The problem isn't so much YouTube, it's that hot fetid wind.

OK, now we're talking!

Tesla Model S: $50,000 EV sedan seats seven, 300-mile range, 0-60 in 5.5s

That's not my driving profile, but the car should have a big market. It's way sexy, it costs next to nothing to fuel, and the range, even in the 160 configuration, is quite sufficient for the daily commute and for some modest side trips. The average buyer won't have this as his or her only car; there will be something else for extended travel.

With a 300 mile range, the car could serve many customers as their only car. After 200 000 miles, assuming you get that from the machine, you'd have spent 32000 on gasoline. With this guy, you've been spared most of that expense. That brings the total lifetime cost down to within reason, even discounting the prestige value of the machine.

Over time, we can hope Tesla Motors will realize economies of scale and be able to mass produce a less expensive model.

By suspending the James Randi Foundation’s (JREF) account YouTube is severely risking its credibility. The JREF exists to expose individuals who perpetrate fraud, the JREF does not promote any activity that would violate the individual rights of anyone. This egregious error should be immediately rectified by reinstating the JREF's account.

They seem to go based on numbers a lot, but it is hard to tell for sure.

One thing that I think is relevant to this issue - this is from 2007, but is it the same type of thing. Basically, make spurious DMCA complaints when they are quoted or when their site is quoted. Youtube seems to act on these spurious complaints without any thought at all.

YouTube bans anti-Creationism group for DMCA takedown complaint

YouTube, the world's largest video sharing site owned by Google Inc., has raised some eyebrows by banning the accounts of a group known as the Rational Response Squad after it complained that its videos were being taken down by spurious DMCA requests from Creationists. The group argues that its videos contained material either public domain, covered by fair use, or entirely self-produced.

The Creation Science Evangelism Ministries is responsible for the copyright complaints. It was founded by the now-imprisoned tax evader, Kent Hovind. While the videos offered by the Rational Response Squad may have contained quotes or arguments made by Creationists, the Creation Science Evangelism Ministries' websites state, "none of the materials ... are copyrighted, so feel free to copy these and distribute them freely."

To be fair, this is not an issue of free speech or first amendment rights. The owners of YouTube have the right and the privilege to allow or disallow whatever they like on their property.

This is an issue of poor management, and even poorer moderation. It would seem, according so some comments here, that they ban based solely on ratings and statistics without actually looking at or investigating content. The problem seems to be concerted, organized efforts to exploit a lazy flaw in YT moderation from other users to remove things they dislike. If I am wrong, please correct.

re: #213 pink freud
No, as I said, Thank you! From your link:

It's a job where you want a strong defender of America's sovereignty. But that's not Koh. He's a fan of "transnational legal process," arguing that
What would this look like in a practical sense? Well, California voters have overruled their courts, which had imposed same-sex marriage on the state. Koh would like to see such matters go up the chain through federal courts -- which, in turn, should look to the rest of the world. If Canada, the European Human Rights Commission and the United Nations all say gay marriage should be legal -- well, then, it should be legal in California too, regardless of what the state's voters and elected representatives might say.

He even believes judges should use this "logic" to strike down the death penalty, which is clearly permitted in the US Constitution.

The primacy of international legal "norms" applies even to treaties we reject. For example, Koh believes that the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child -- a problematic document that we haven't ratified -- should dictate the age at which individual US states can execute criminals. Got that? On issues ranging from affirmative action to the interrogation of terrorists, what the rest of the world says, goes.

[emphasis realwest].
It is apparent that Koh has no real regard for the Constitution, Federal or State laws, whatsover. And when he says:"the distinctions between US and international law should vanish. " What he really means and IS saying is that the protections Americans have EARNED through the Bill of Rights, for example freedom of speech and press should go out the window because they are NOT the norms of International Law. Too many Americans have fought to preserve those rights through too many wars for anyone to have the right (other than the American People under the Constitution) to deny that to us. And, indeed, IIRC, the USA is the ONLY nation which doesn't prosecute hate speech (except where someone says "Kill that bastard" to a crowd while pointing one individual out). The ONLY NATION IN THE WORLD WITH THOSE PARTICULAR PROTECTIONS IN IT'S BASIC GOVERNING DOCUMENT.
We don't have "Hate Speech Crimes" prosecuted here when someone speaks out against a group of people - e.g., Muslim Jihadists - who are trying to KILL US.
Just look at Canada and Great Britain as examples.
"Hate Crimes" including hate speech crimes can come crashing down on your head (see, e.g., Ezra Levant) for speaking your mind in public about a particular group of people. That cannot happen here in the USA and I refuse to believe that even if Koh gets on SCOTUS that OUR Constitution would be so falsely construed as to allow Hate Speech laws to be upheld.

Tech demos and neato things videos, on the other hand...there is a large groups of people, apparantly, who do nothing but reply "FAKE!" to anything and everything they see. It's like MTV, only dumbed down. You didn't think that was possible, did you? These are the same people, I suspect, who believe the Troofers, who cry "fake" on everything else.

re: #107 Dianna

One who uses a variety of methods - my favorite is a plumb-bob - to find water or hidden objects.

Some people use a forked branch, held at an awkward angle. Others use a brass rod; one fellow I knew - quite a clever faker - used untwisted wire coathangers.

The "theory" behind dowsing, as I understand it, is that the implement carried by the dowser simply serves as an indicator of the fact that the dowser's body is picking up "vibrations" from the object sought.

Myself, I wonder if perhaps what's really going on, is that the dowser is taking in all sorts of cues from his environment, processing them subconsciously, and then outputting the result in the form of involuntary (?) muscular contractions in the hands.

In other words, a rational explanation for dowsing is that it is a manifestation of instinct or of subconscious reasoning. I guess you could call it an algorithm of sorts. That hypothesis could explain why dowsing so often fails in a contrived test. The algorithm evolved for the purpose of finding natural-occurring groundwater, based on the environmental clues to its presence. These clues would be lacking in the case of an artificially-planted target.

Please don't take this as a defense of dowsing, or as any kind of opposition to James Randi.

I'm actually really surprised they would do this. It isn't as if Randi isn't a nationally known figure. Didn't somebody at YouTube realize what they were doing? Let's face it: YouTube is full of leftists working there. All fine to roll our eyes but many are skeptics as well. So I'm thinking somebody was just really stupid and didn't know, misinformed, or simply screwed up without asking.

Either way, I can't imagine they actually looked into this before doing it. I'm guessing: major screwup they will be rectifying soon. At least I hope so.

That is Randi's exact definition. Hence why he hates debunker.

Thing is, as a skeptic, once you have evaluated a particular phenomenon, and have come to reasoned decision that it's the result of fraud or error, and not legitimate, don't you then owe it to society to become a debunker of that particular phenomenon? To save other people from becoming caught up in it? Take a Ponzi scheme chain letter, for example, as something one would want to vigorously debunk.

re: #257 Sharmuta

I'd just like to say that this advice should extend beyond youtube complaints.

Absolutely. It's a vinegar v. honey thing. I have some experience in writing letters of complaint, and what I suggested above applies to whoever you are writing to.

Couple other tips....

- Typed, professionally formatted letters, ON PAPER and mailed in an ENVELOPE area a thousand fold more effective than emails. Emails are "for shit" in this regard, and generally get deleted without being read.

- Find the name and company address of the person who is the CEO, Company President, or whatever dept. title they hold, and write directly to them. These people are busy as hell, and do not want to be troubled with any mail, even if it is a letter that states "YOU ROCK". It is a nuisance to them, and they have better things to do with their time. But, if you present your grievance in a reasoned and logical manner, without being abusive, they will make it someone's business to see that you are satisfied and STFU.

Certainly this does not always work, there are exceptions to every rule. But one thing is for sure: sending an angry, abusive letter full of emotional rhetoric accomplishes nothing.

True, in many cases, you'll get water wherever you drill for it, if there is a good aquifer. Dowsers tend to spiel about "underground rivers", but the typical aquifer is more like a sponge, with water slowly oozing through it.

I'd really like to have a better water well at my place. It's 400 feet deep, and only flows 2 GPM. But unless it quits altogether, I'm not about to pay the considerable expense of drilling another well.

There are however a lot of jerkoffs over at the Randi forum and LGF has been one of their favorite targets for years, like the one quoted below on the fact that LGF has supported Randi on this.

They have a significant group of apologists for terrorists, and while they are not exclusively so, this issue raises the somewhat ironic point that their "terms of service" are that one cannot call anyone an asshole, regardless of what they say, upon pain of banishment.

Needless to say, Randi uses equivalents of that word all the time.

Ugh. Why must YouTube be so spineless? Good grief.

I am Christian, creationist (NOT a "young earth creationist"), and a respecter of science. My two cents on Mr. Randi, for any fellow Christians who may be lurking and having angry thoughts about him or his work:

I've always had, and continue to have, the utmost respect for Randi. He seeks the truth. I seek the truth. Jesus said "the truth shall set you free." I've always liked the fact that Randi is not caustic is his agnosticism/atheism. Like the Apostle Thomas, he demands proof, and those of us who have faith in things we cannot prove scientifically should not fault him for that, or else we just look insecure.

I'm a new hatchling and this is my first post. Hi everybody! Eternal thanks to Charles for the throbbing memo!

This is outrageous James Randi is held in such high esteem by UK scientists that despite his non scientific background he was brought in (as a man with the highest honesty credentials) to act as referee;
in a program investigating the validity of homeopathy.
As the presenter said "he can spot a phony at a distance of light years".
His expertise at exposing "leger de main" is second to none; and he has
demonstrated this skill on numerous occasions;to the delight of all who
welcome his input.
It's a great day for phonies and frauds that "youtube" has banned such a man.
The question is: Who'll be next? Penn and Teller,Richard Dawkins, Charles Johnson,or a host of others who through their efforts try to bring a little sanity and logic into this world where the "idiot" assumes
dominence.
You tube should have a soul search as to what they stand for!
Pat Condell is still wondering.

re: #343 rehnquist

It's unlikely that Youtube was being "spineless" in terms
of this particular incident.

They have a huge number of copyright complaints filed on any given day, and they tend to "Ban First, Investigate Later", to cover their asses. Most likely,
they got a barrage of false copyright complaints
from disgruntled kooks, and disabled the account
while they check to validity of the complaint.

re: #338 Kobalt

And a great place to learn to play songs on the guitar,
watch product reviews, see people fishing, diving, mountain biking, vacationing, and whatever else you're
interested in.

Searching for negativity is a great way to find it.
