Report: Chinese Develop Special "Kill Weapon" to Destroy U.S. Aircraft Carriers
With tensions already rising due to the Chinese navy becoming more aggressive in asserting its territorial claims in the South China Sea, the U.S. Navy seems to have yet another reason to be deeply concerned.
After years of conjecture, details have begun to emerge of a "kill weapon" developed by the Chinese to target and destroy U.S. aircraft carriers.
First posted on a Chinese blog viewed as credible by military analysts and then translated by the naval affairs blog Information Dissemination, a recent report provides a description of an anti-ship ballistic missile (ASBM) that can strike carriers and other U.S. vessels at a range of 2000km.
The range of the modified Dong Feng 21 missile is significant in that it covers the areas that are likely hot zones for future confrontations between U.S. and Chinese surface forces.
The size of the missile enables it to carry a warhead big enough to inflict significant damage on a large vessel, providing the Chinese the capability of destroying a U.S. supercarrier in one strike.
Because the missile employs a complex guidance system, low radar signature and a maneuverability that makes its flight path unpredictable, the odds that it can evade tracking systems to reach its target are increased. It is estimated that the missile can travel at mach 10 and reach its maximum range of 2000km in less than 12 minutes.
Supporting the missile is a network of satellites, radar and unmanned aerial vehicles that can locate U.S. ships and then guide the weapon, enabling it to hit moving targets.
/I shudder to wonder how TOTUS would react if China were to take out one of our carriers

Are they really ignoring Nazi involvement in the Tea Parties?
Nazis, Angry Tax Payers Can't Wait For April Rallies in St. Louis
Last week, "SS Lt." Steven Boswell with the National Socialist Movement (a.k.a. America's Nazi Party) sent an e-mail updating a post I wrote earlier this month.
It seems that in addition to its rally under the Arch on April 18, the NSM now plans to hold a a "walking picket" of downtown St. Louis.
Writes Boswell:
As I am sure the City is aware, although a parade permit is required when streets have to be closed down, no such permit is required for a walking picket. The National Socialist Movement may picket anywhere in St Louis and at anytime during that weekend. The current Obama administration seems hell-bent on destroying the last vestiges of America, the greatest nation in the history of the Earth. And they are determined to wipe out the White man, the spark of genius that created that nation. We of the NSM will not let that happen. We will take our message of American hope directly to the streets of St. Louis and directly to the people of St. Louis.

Hey all you dog lovers out there. turn mentioned here yesterday the lab cut one of his paw pads real bad last Wednesday. I've been talking to him on and off since then explaining "no we can't go for a walk until your paw heals" and many variations on this. I also spent time with him asking to see his paw and checking on the healing. I finally took him for a short walk in an open field last night and the paw didn't start bleeding again. At any rate I got home and of course he wanted to play ball then. He was staring me down on the patio wanting me to go for the ball I have up on a shelf. I told him "no, we are not going to play ball until you paw heals up".
He cocked his head at me then immediately laid down and started licking his paw like crazy. I swear he knows what I'm telling him and wants that paw healed NOW. I told him the same thing in front of the turnwife later, he did the same damn thing. Too funny.

Cute story! Without a doubt, dogs pick up on words pretty quickly. My sister's family's dog got a Christmas present this year, a chew toy in the shape of a hedgehog, which was promptly dubbed "Hedgie". He ADORES it, and constantly carries it around with him, eagerly showing it to anyone who enters the house. If he happens not to have it at any given moment, and you ask him "where's Hedgie?", he runs and gets it.

He’s not the Barack Obama Europe Knew
And for all Obama’s pledges of multilateralism, he’s finding out that going it alone is not an exercise in arrogance, but an occasional occupational necessity. He tried (he really did) to get Europe to take in some Guantanamo Bay detainees, but that too has been “shelved.” Likewise European support for an effective sanctions regime against Iran is dwindling with Obama in office, not reifying, and this leaves the U.S. as the lone spoiler of Western trade with Iran.
I can't wait to hear how Obama "squandered the world’s sympathy"... you know it's coming.

I read his book Protect and Defend, which had a fun plot, but it was ruined for me by some serious factual errors. Part of the story took place in Mosul, which Flynn describes as part of Kurdish Iraq (it isn't) and the group MEK is described as an Iraqi Kurdish militia (they're not). There were several other similar mistakes.
In my opinion, if somebody is going to write a thriller about current affairs, he ought to do his homework.

"Skunk!"
Seriously I worry about that, no fortunately he hasn't learned that word yet. I worry about "snake" more. We've run accross two so far, one was a baby rattler (I think)and the other a King snake. Both times I didn't point them out to him and he luckly passed right by them. I don't want him getting that word in his vocabulary.

Depending on weapon. My 9mm was 15 round mags; 3 mags, plus one in the pipe for 46 rounds. LE mags are 12 to 15 rounds each, common practice is to carry 2 spare mags. Officers commonly have between 37 to 46 rounds on them. How many you could get off before a crowd is on them is another matter. The idea is if the officer drops a couple of the closest assailants the rest with stop when they see them go down. However crowd dynamics are unpredictable.

Yep. If the crowd decides to roll that pretty much it. In that situation the Officer needs to try to identify a "leader" in the crowd. That's his first target if it becomes necessary and if he has the shot, idea being take out the leader and it takes the wind out of everyone's sails. Many times in those case disengagement is problematic because the crowd won't allow the officer to disengage.

Crowd control using firearms is exceptionally difficult, but surprisingly effective. As you allude to, the best tactic is to hit the biggest, loudest SOB in the group, or, at a minimum, the one most vivible to them and you.
You don't necessarily need a kill-shot, but if you're gonna shoot, shoot to kill.
Most experience suggests that an unorganized mob will disperse at the first shot fired; if they're organized to any extent, however, it'll look like the last 30 minutes of Zulu.

This Kipling story--His Chance in Life--is doubtless considered racist by today's standards, but is very interesting.
It deals with a clerk who gets promotion by facing down a riotous mob.

Yep, and the dog isn't going to be much help either, at that stage. For obvious reasons, police dogs aren't trained to kill. It'd bite a few people and bark a lot, but that would be that.

Miss Universe says had "lot of fun" in Guantanamo
"It was a loooot of fun!," Mendoza wrote, describing how she and Stewart met U.S. military personnel and took rides around the camp, which is encircled by a barbed-wire fenced, minefields and watchtowers. She said they also visited a bar on the base and the "unbelievable" beach there.
"We visited the Detainees camps and we saw the jails, where they shower, how the(y) recreate themselves with movies, classes of art, books. It was very interesting," she wrote.
"I didn't want to leave, it was such a relaxing place, so calm and beautiful," she added.
Ahhhhhhh, but she didn't get to see the sulfur pits and torture chambers.

re: #401 buzzsawmonkey
I haven't read that book, but the scene as you describe it is similar to the scene in Huckleberry Finn where one of the characters faces down a lynch mob.
IN this one, Sutpen and the family with whom he is working as a sort of overseer are facing a full-on slave uprising. They're out of ammunition, and completely surrounded. He walks out, and without giving any real explanation of how he does it, he subdues them.
Faulkner has Quentin hypothesize that the sight of him enduring more pain and damage than any human being could was enough to sicken and terrify the mob.

I took an architecture class for fun. I built a small tensigrity stair case. Clear Lucite stairs, the compression part was vertical at each end of the treads, the tension cables holding them up. It looked cool, a floating stair case. Since it was small 5 steps about 6" tall. The only thing with it was any real stair case would likely be bouncy and make people nervous. Got a A on the project.

This Kipling story--His Chance in Life--is doubtless considered racist by today's standards, but is very interesting.
It deals with a clerk who gets promotion by facing down a riotous mob.
It's surprising how easy it can be at times to halt or at least intimidate a disorganized crowd. I'm an SCA heavy fighter and there have been times when I have stopped up to about ten other fighters by brandishing my Great Axe as though I knew what I was doing. Nobody wants to be the first one hit. If they are organized and have a commander however, about the best I can expect is a momentary pause in their advance.

For an encore, if The One follows through after closing Gitmo down, and fulfills the long-cherished progressive dream of "disestablishing this affront to Cuban sovereignty" (i.e., closing the base and turning it over to the Castro brothers Raul the way we turned Clark and Subic Bay over to the Philippines), anyone want to bet how fast Raul re-opens it as a prison for his own use?
Of course, from what I've heard, compared to Cuban prisons, Gitmo is less like a "country club" slammer for VIPs doing "soft time" up here, and more like Club Med.

That kind of gag actually worked back in cold steel days. The nasty thing about a sword is that grabbing it out of the wielder's hands is generally a no-go. Given a position where he can keep the opfor in front of him, the guy on defense actually has an advantage; if more than a couple of them come at him at once, they get in each others' way, and he can whack them before they can get in any licks.
Sword combat is messy and nasty, but very effective, if you know what you're doing.

If you look at any of the big left-wing gatherings (anti-globalization protests, anti-war protests, etc) you always see a whole slew of different single-issue groups represented.
That might be the way to approach it. Organize a coalition of conservative groups, rather than trying to individually gather people.

Furry, whether tongue in cheek or not, made a good point in his 525. The right for the most part doesn't think in those terms (of having to organize protests) We for the most part are trying just to live our lives. Go to work, have some quality family time, take care of our own, etc. As I stated the right hasn't made an indusrty out of being professional protesters!
Would you want that as a 'job", even if you thought your causes were just? Or would you opt to "protest" the old fashioned way. The ballot box, or with your pocketbook.

Agreed. The Founding Fathers were individualists to a man- and they organized to defeat the biggest empire on Earth at the time. And incidentally create a new nation, dedicated to individualism (in the personal sense).
The two are not mutually exclusionary- "individualists" just save their "organizational" genius for when it's really needed.

No sarc tag needed- indeed, I think rugged individualists struggle with organizing themselves. But if we're going to counter the creeping socialism, we have to figure out how to organize ourselves against it so that we can be effective in our objectives.

If you look at any of the big left-wing gatherings (anti-globalization protests, anti-war protests, etc) you always see a whole slew of different single-issue groups represented.
That might be the way to approach it. Organize a coalition of conservative groups, rather than trying to individually gather people.
And groups may be easier to vet than individuals. Keep out the kooks.

True, but the Roman army had its own ways of dealing with missile attack; stay under armor and shields, in a good testudo formation, and close the distance double-quick. Light cavalry, too, can be used in these cases, to great effect.
Adding numbers changes the game somewhat.

I don't know if conservatives don't see organized political groups as a business or what the deal is, but some intrepid conservative should take charge, create a couple of jobs, and organize this movement. Form an actual organization with fundraising abilities, create a few jobs with an actual organized power structure, and then we'd have the ability to shape this grassroots tea party sentiment into a real counter punch to the left. The time has come- we have to take the best aspects of the enemies playbook and apply it to ourselves. We have to learn how to organize ourselves!

Burn down an ROTC building - *Crack*
Take over a campus - *Crack*
Start a riot - *Crack*
Oh, you're Billy Ayers? - *Extra Hard Crack*
We might not be reaping the fruits that we are now if the older generation had just said "Enough of this shit".........
You had two things going on in the 60's.
There where the Civil Rights Marches, which were mostly peaceful and the Police heavy handed approach to that.
Then you had the campus punks and hippies not being so peaceful and getting away with it because of the focus on police tactics.
Like with the Tea Parties, getting a bunch of nazis joining end. A good idea being used by folks with no good intentions at all.

You mean like this?:
With anti-gun forces aligned against us both in the White House and in the United States Congress, America’s gun owners can expect a barrage of anti-gun measures like we have not seen in decades. In order to meet these challenges head on, we must once again redouble our efforts to beat back attempts by the anti-gunners to further erode the Second Amendment.
Your attendance at this year's NRA-ILA Grassroots Workshop in Phoenix is a critical step toward ensuring the future of our gun rights. This Workshop has been a staple of NRA’s Annual Meetings, and is one of the most popular events of the week, attended by hundreds of freedom-loving NRA members.
At this FREE Workshop, we will discuss how you can take on an even more active role in your community in our mutual fight to advance and protect our cherished freedoms—and begin preparation for the all-important 2010 mid-term congressional elections. We will provide you with the materials and strategies you will need to educate and empower your fellow gun owners as well. The Workshop will feature several guest speakers, including NRA officers and NRA-ILA staff.
With your support and attendance at the Workshop, you'll help ensure that NRA members and gun owners from across the nation are actively in engaged in the battle to protect the Second Amendment. Please encourage your family, friends, and fellow firearm owners to attend as well!

A little discipline goes a long way. I fight in a well organized SCA warband. We use Viking tactics and formations, but we practice and pretty much know how to stay in formation. It's no contest when we hit unorganized groups or loosely organized units. That was the greatest thing I learned about history in the SCA, how a battle can turn on something as seemingly mundane as a little discipline.

(Of course, this was on the History channel and there was an ad for their "Alien Abductions" show, so take it with as much salt as necessary.)
Even the best technology the planet has to offer won't do an undisciplined army a whit of good, will actually make the situation worse. Look at the Arab armies in '67 and '73.

There was something about a week ago on history channel. The 'Warriors 'program (hosted by a guy is is ex-SF). He went over the Teutorborg Forrest battle where a couple Legions got slaughtered by the German tribes. The tribes knew the land and one of theirs was actually on the Roman side untill he betrayed the Romans. good stuff. the tribes fought at night. They painted their shields and bodies black so the Romans had trouble seeing them.

Alexanders Dad figured out how to defeat the "shield wall", which Alexander did to unit the unit Greeks. He discovered if you got a few horses running stampede, you could run them over a cliff, or into a shield wall. Alexander used groups of fifty calvary to do it. It must not have been pretty.

What's always facinated me about Agincourt is that it took place in 1415, 77 years before Columbus set sail for the New World (which, in spite of what they teach in grade school, he probably at least already suspected was there before weighing anchor- see The Day The Universe Changed by James Burke).
The timespan between Agincourt, the last truly major battle fought in "classical" medieval style on the Continent, and the beginning of the Spanish conquest of Central America (my vote for the first "modern" conflict in the sense of using advanced technology - gunpowder and horses- to compensate for imbalance of forces) was shorter than the the time lapse between the American Revolution and the American Civil War.
For that matter, the Hundred Years' War (that Crecy' and Agincourt were both part of) only ended in 1453, less than forty years before Columbus' voyage. And in the British Isles, the Houses of Lancaster and York only settled the Wars of the Roses in 1485- eight years before the Santa Maria landed on Hispaniola.
Things back then changed faster than most people today think they did.
cheers

It doesn't matter if you saw that on the History Channel. I have read quite a few books with Roman army tactics described in them. That about sums it up. Meeting a mob as an organized force, with organized tactics will do wonders as a force multiplier.
Meeting them by throwing two javelins, followed by a pilum, apiece, in unison and on command, helps, too.
The pilum was "hinged" in the middle, and once it was stuck in the other guy's shield, he either had to ditch the shield or be tripped by the pilum shaft.
That's when the order to "draw gladii and close" was given.

Tensegrity are very cool also.....
Tensegrity and geodesics are classic Fuller - both ideas were developed by others, and stolen by Bucky, who shamelessly promoted them as his own without giving a lick of credit to those actually responsible.
Google "Ken Snelson" for the real story behind tensegrity. He invented it, developed the idea and continues to produce major artwork incorporating it.
Geodesics, in general, is hundreds of years old, and the earliest examples of geodesic domes using geometry identical to that promoted by Fuller date from the very early 20th century. Fuller appropriated the idea, tossed some grad students at it, and wove it into his impenetrable crock of 60s pseudo-scientific gobbledeygook. He had no hand at all in it's invention.
Fuller was extremely good at one thing: marketing Buckminster Fuller. Whenever I see "The Wizard of Oz," the scenes featuring the fortune teller and the Wizard, both glib charlatans, remind me strongly of him. They even bear a strong resemblance to Fuller.

re: #657 FurryOldGuyJeans
History of the Stirrup (yes, its wiki, so grain of salt needed). Definitely not a Roman invention.
Apparently, the stirrup entered Europe via the Frankish kingdoms in the 8th Century A.D. (considering that they had gone round and round with the Sarmatians a few times, this probably isn't surprising);
The evidence for its arrival is only indirect, but it provides an interesting example of one of the peripheral effects of invention, that of language change. The Frankish words for getting on and off a horse were replaced at this period by words that mean "to step up" or "to step down". Other effects show themselves: the francisca (throwing hatchet, similar to a tomahawk), battle axe, and the ango, the javelin- (all) weapons predominantly used by foot soldiers- disappeared from the Frankish armory. The spatha, the sword, became too long to be used with ease by a man on foot. And, most significantly, the spear took on a wing attachment just behind the head. This modification would only have been necessary if the spear were to become embedded too far in the body of the enemy to be easily pulled out. The force being applied to create this problem in the first place could only come from the impact of a horse. The spear was obviously being used as a lance, and this would only be possible with the stirrup acting as an anchor to keep the rider on the horse at the moment of impact.-Connections by James Burke, chap. 3, "Distant Voices", p. 52
By the way, it was the stirrup, and the lance, as used by the Normans' cavalry shock troop, that broke the Saxon line at Hastings in 1066, and made William... the Conqueror.

Just won an appellate victory in the 1st Dist. Ct of Appeal (Bay Area) on a SLAPP motion against the dreaded tenants' mouthpiece Tenderloin Housing Clinic. Nice. :-> Scotch coming my way. Strike another victory for property owners.
