I have a couple of browser questions for anyone out there.

1. Have you had problems with Firefox 3? specifically, when I try to type into a text field, the letters show up sometimes, or not.

2. The autorefresh feature here doesn't seem to work in Safari. Also, why does everything in Safari look blurry, like an old bitmap image?

re: #6 Killgore Trout

We're really cold here in the PacNW too. I have a lot of yard cleanup to do but it's just too cold and miserable out there.

Well, individual anecdotes don't really prove much one way or another. One can always find some spot on the globe that is colder than normal, and somewhere else that is warmer than normal, at any given moment. So each side of the debate is constantly bringing up this or that individual anecdote to apparently support their argument. Al Gore is the worst offender in this regard, showing glaciers calving off icebergs, as if that was relevant. Big flashy pictures, prove nothing. Elsewhere, out of camera range, some other glacier or ice sheet is imperceptibly growing thicker.

Similarly the colder-than-normal spring temperatures across much of the US prove little as well. Yeah, it's cold here, but for all we know, it's extra hot in Namibia or Madagascar or wherever. All we can rely on is the (supposedly) reliable global average temperature. And that does indeed show that the last ten years have shown a cooling trend. But on a different time scale, the last 60 years have shown a warming trend. And in the last ten minutes everything has stayed the same.

The more I read about this, the more cynical I become.

59 GOPManHatTanIte  Wed, Apr 1, 2009 10:49:55am

U.S. reconciliation offer "lunatic"-Taliban spokesman

By Sayed Salahuddin

KABUL, April 1 (Reuters) - Taliban insurgents reject a U.S. offer of "honourable reconciliation", a top spokesman said on Wednesday, calling it a "lunatic idea" and saying the only way to end the war was to withdraw foreign troops.

With the Afghan conflict now in its eighth year, NATO-led forces and the Taliban are locked in a bloody stalemate with violence set to rise further this year as more U.S. troops arrive and seek to contain the insurgency ahead of August elections.

President Barack Obama is redoubling U.S. efforts with more troops, more diplomatic effort and more economic assistance, but he has also already spoken of the need for an "exit strategy".

Obama and Medvedev: Iran has right to peaceful nuclear program

By Natasha Mozgavaya, Haaretz Correspondent and The Associated Press

Tags: Israel News, Nuclear Crisis

The United States and Russia on Wednesday declared that Iran has a right to pursue a civilian nuclear program, but warned that the country must abide by an international treaty and prove that its contentious efforts were of a "peaceful nature".

"While we recognize that under the NPT [Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons] Iran has the right to a civilian nuclear program, Iran needs to restore confidence in its exclusively peaceful nature," U.S. President Barack Obama and Russian President Dmitry Medvedev announced in a joint statement ahead of their first sit-down.

So...we here in the US can start building nuke power plants now?

Lawmakers Have Long Rewarded Their Aides With Bonuses

Last year alone, more than 200 House lawmakers, both Republicans and Democrats, awarded bonuses totaling $9.1 million to more than 2,000 staff members, according to a Wall Street Journal analysis of office-disbursement forms. The money comes out of taxpayer-funded office budgets, and is surplus cash that would otherwise be forfeited if not spent.

There is no prohibition against handing out excess cash.

I wasn't aware we had any "excess cash" in Washington.

138 gmsc  Wed, Apr 1, 2009 11:01:39am

This auto bailout gets worse every day...

Obama Orders Chevrolet and Dodge Out Of NASCAR

In a move sure to spark outrage, the White House announced today that GM and Chrysler must cease participation in NASCAR at the end of the 2009 season if they hope to receive any additional financial aid from the government. Companies around the globe—Honda and Audi, to name two—have drawn down racing operations, and NASCAR itself has already felt the pinch in the form of reduced team spending. A complete withdrawal from America’s premier racing series is expected to save more than $250 million between GM and Chrysler, a substantial amount considering the drastic measures being implemented elsewhere.

“Automakers used to operate on the principle of ‘win on Sunday, sell on Monday,’ but the Auto Task Force’s research just doesn’t validate that as true,” said the statement from President Obama. While fans have decried the Car of Tomorrow for heavily limiting what little personalization the cookie-cutter series had previously allowed to participating manufacturers, and drivers have slammed its brick-like aerodynamics and unpredictable handling, even the governmental oversight committee sees that the full-scale regulation of the cars leaves the manufacturers very little space for research and development. “NASCAR is a racing series that regulates down to the smallest detail of the cars, where a car badged a Chevrolet or Dodge differs only marginally from a Ford or a Toyota. There’s no technological development to speak of.”

Fourth paragraph to the last: fix "indiacted" to "indicated". Good article. The US president is a dreadful cur, with no appreciation for history or former relationships in the world. Even the dumb American people with grow to detest the very mention of his name. It will take a little while, however, because they have been so dumbed down by the educational system here.

I'm not so sure -- the original report looks pretty authentic to me:

Barack Obama's gift for the Queen: an iPod, your Majesty
Posted By: Toby Harnden at Apr 1, 2009 at 18:42:31 [General]
Tags: Barack Obama, Buckingham Palace, dvds, ipod, Photograph, Queen

Barack Obama met the Queen at Buckingham Palace today and gave her a gift of an iPod loaded with video footage and photographs of her 2007 visit to the United States. In return, the Queen gave the President a silver framed photograph of herself - apparently a standard present for visiting dignitaries.

The Queen already has an iPod, a 6GB silver Mini version she bought in 2005 at the suggestion of Prince Andrew.

Earlier, Mr Obama had spoken of his admiration for Her Majesty but indicated that his wife was handling the details of their royal meeting. "There's one last thing that I should mention that I love about Great Britain, and that is the Queen," he said at the end of his joint press conference with Gordon Brown.

waaa

The normally savvy media mavens on Team Obama blundered badly on the opening day of his European trip, scheduling his only open event for 5:15 a.m. EDT, which forced the mainstream and cable morning news programs to fill endless hours showing live protests in London and discussing first lady Michelle Obama's "green pencil skirt."

Unlike President Bush's White House communications team, which usually timed press conferences abroad to coincide with the U.S. morning programs, the Obama operation kicked off the president's first day in Britain while most Americans were still asleep. What's more, the president banned most reporters from nearly every event he held on a day busy with bilateral talks with foreign leaders, and even held cameras at bay for his visit to Buckingham Palace to meet the queen.

My only guess is that Apple paid for a "promotional consideration" during the presidential Europe trip. I've never seen so much attention payed to what the gifts are. I don't know what things have been given/received in the past to make a judgment but dvd's and and an ipod does seem lame for important heads of state. In the old days, it'd be a Thoroughbred or bejeweled crown or some such. Used to garner favor. I guess these days this would cause suspicion and have a negative effect. You can never go wrong with a bouquet of roses. Or several. Just make sure the color reflects the occasion.

POLITICAL THEATER Column:

The 24-hour cable shows began their morning programs with endless footage of hooligans clashing with British bobbies.

"They're the only pictures being shown out of London right now," said Christiane Amanpour, CNN's chief international correspondent. But anchor Christine Romans assured viewers: "There's a lot of other hard work going on behind closed doors," although a split-screen showed only the raging protest in the streets of the city's financial district.

With virtually no news to cover, reporters spending thousands of dollars were left with little to do. The Obama team offered up top officials to brief the bored press, but then demanded they only be identified as "senior administration officials" and banned cameras. ...

Schedule leaves Obama a media no-show

Lets be a bit less critical - on that ipod there are pictures of the Queens visit in 2007. I think that is actually quite a nice gesture: something hi-tech, developed in the USA, combined with memories of her visit.

After all, PB0 and WAB only got the usual, signed (by both) silver-framed photo of the Quen and Prince Phillip.

I'm sure this was all sorted out by the protocol people beforehand - on both sides.
Don't forget - this is not a state visit, its just a brief getting-together, a thirty-minute visit, so nothing huge and significant is expected.

So lets reel in the indignation, its really not a bad little gift.

I think the problem is the gifts are thoughtless and very commercial. Brown's DVD collection wouldn't even work in his CD because they were NTSC and not PAL encoded. The IPOD was a little better but still somewhat tacky.

""I can make a firm pledge," he said in Dover, N.H., on Sept. 12. "Under my plan, no family making less than $250,000 a year will see any form of tax increase. Not your income tax, not your payroll tax, not your capital gains taxes, not any of your taxes.""

Okaaay, not sure what relevance that has. It stated in the report that the queen gives a framed photo of herself to EVERY dignitary. To me, this seems a bit...off putting, as much as Obama's gift gaffes.

Again, I'm with you. Obama ran on being about "change."

During a world depression who would expect a self proclaimed radical "change" agent to continue or maintain gift-giving traditions which he came to change!

I don't know (obviously) what he gave every leader, but there has been a long-standing tradition of exchanging culturally/historically relevant gifts. For GW, I'd expect Western-style saddles, perhaps items made by (now American) ex-pat communities of the country from which the leader came, etc.
It's not a huge deal, but it's a tradition and we need to keep as many of them as possible.

My husband worked at the Bush Library when it opened at Texas A&M in 1997. He gave Arnold Schwarzenegger a tour, and when they came to a display that had an elaborately decorated leather saddle, Arnold said that it must have been a gift from Mexico. When my husband asked how he knew that, Arnold replied, "Because it looks be-oo-tee-ful but when you try to use it it hurts your aaahhss.

Okay, then I retract my battle rifle idea, and instead proposed: A lovely M1911 from the Kimber Custom Shop, in a handsome cedar presentation box.

Its still too big for a 30-minute visit.

I am certain that after the DVD gaffe, the protocol people have been in touch with their opposite number at Buckingham Palace - or rather, the Buck House people will ahve told the White House lot how to ahndle this, what to expect, what is expected from them, and to run past them their proposals.
The Queen's protocol people know precisely how to handle all this - and they know how to inform those who dont know about this, without bruising egos.
Also - one does not roll up with a huge impressive gift, be it ever so nice, which is not suitable for the occasion.
State visit is one thing - 30-minute tea drinking is a totally different cup of tea!

re: #422 avanti

Then it's pretentious protocol. Imagine the uproar if BHO gift was a picture of him and the family. Yea, I know she's royalty, but I don't get the concept.

You don't want to get it because it would make you look stupid. Try to get a handle on this, we don't have a King or Queen, yes, it would look really tacky if Obama gave a picture.

You don't have to get the concept, It's England, a different country, with a different culture, with different ways of doing things, with their OWN right to do things the way they do them.

In England, it's an honor, it's their culture, it's a tradition. Now, can you xenophobic little mind understand that?

In the US, an IPOD is a disgrace to be giving the Queen of England.

This was not a state visit!
Do the Obamas stay at Buckiham Palace?
No.
Do they get a dinner at Windsor castle?
No.
Do they spend a day with the Queen and her family?
No.

They are here for a political meeting, on the invitation of Gord - not on the invitation of the Queen.
The Queen only asked to meet the Obamas for 30 mintes, alone, before she met all the other G20 leaders.
Is is not a state visit - and no occasion for significant gifts!

The most absurd example was the Adam Sandler film "Big Daddy" (if I remember correctly), which was bascially a 2-hour infomercial for various products. "Clumsy" doesn't even begin to describe it.

I, for one, don't think that Obi-Wan Kenobi should have been seen enjoying a Starbucks latte in Attack of The Clones.

Some folks would like Obama to offer the following gift:

Protests are dominating the G20 meeting in London, and much of the anger is directed at the United States.
It was our financiers who concocted the mortgage-backed securities that are now bankrupting the world's banks. It was our consumers who gorged on debt and bought stuff they couldn't afford -- and who are now destroying the world's exports as they frantically sto spending. It was our regulators who failed to detect mind-boggling abuses and frauds that have cost global investors billions. Etc.
So, should Obama apologize for our behavior to the leaders of the other G19?
Yes, says our guest Martin Wolf, chief economics commentator for the Financial Times -- as long as he blames everything on his predecessor.

Personal question on grips. I'm thinking about getting some custom grips for my latest acquisition. I could go with something from Wicked Grips and spend a couple of hundred dollars, or I could go with less fancy Micarta grips. I don't really expect to carry this thing into a war zone, but stranger things have happened to me. Any thoughts would be welcome. I'm kind of on the fence.

I could just stay with the factory rubber grips, but they are just kind of blah.

I wound up getting classic rosewood ones, to replace the "G10" polymer grips that came stock. (It's a hard polymer, and the screws couldn't really "bite" into it, which was apparently causing or contributing to the slippage problem.) Aesthetically, I love the look of the rosewood grips, and also like the feel of them.

I have heard good things about Micarta, but don't have any firsthand experience. I don't know anything about Wicked Grips.

Obama doesn't consider America to be special or noteworthy. The way I saw it put on a blog (maybe here, maybe elsewhere) was that he sees America as just another country, somewhere between Albania and Zanzibar in the list of the United Nations. It is, therefore, no surprise that he would see no special relationship between the United States and the United Kingdom.

They are both just places on a map to him.

And He knows NOTHING about EITHER-considering his '60 States' Gaffe...("been to 57 of them, missed 1-but that doesn't include Alaska or Hawaii")...

re: #505 Iron Fist

S&W 1911. I actually got a good deal. Not spectacular, but, in today's environment where everything's backordered for months...

I had been looking for a Colt, and found one but the guy wanted $25 more than I could scare up. This guy dropped the price down to what I could pay. You've got to love gun shows. The tables are pretty to look at and all, but the real business is done just walking around.

can a dealer trace much history from serial numbers...anything besides year of manufacture?

re: #504 snowcrash

My point is make it a thoughtful gift. That is the challenge and the art if successful.

Okay.

Like I said, I thought Gordon Brown hit it perfectly with the anti-slavery ship desk set. Not "extravagant" in monetary terms, but startlingly meaningful.

Shakespeare is best in the original Klingon.

And this would allow her to deliver this year's Christmas Message in Klingon.

The moonbats at Channel 4 would be too terrified after that to try any of that "rebuttal speech" crap!

the idea is give her something she can relate to...not a cell phone or whatever...the song book is decent if it is old and in fact an item she understands...any off the shelf gift is just tacky and offensive

Perhaps they could ask themselves, "Is this something my 11-year-old niece would shriek with delight to receive?" If the answer is "yes," then they can consider some other gift.

Quit giving our out of control Congress excuses to enact even more Draconian legislation that will only be half-heartedly enforced, unless one is a legal owner and then the full force is applied.

534 albusteve  Wed, Apr 1, 2009 12:39:28pm

re: #531 Iron Fist

Not usually. The BATF could probably trace it to the first dealer, and get a possible name and address for the first owner (if he/she hasn't moved, or died, or anything). After that, though, there probably wouldn't be anything. Sales on the secondary market don't require a background check (and they are supposed to destroy all the records from a background check by law; the typical people bitched and moaned when Ashcroft said he was going to start obeying the law), or even a receipt.

I once bought a shotgun from a guy that we met at a certain streetcorner at a given time. I gave him the money (well, somebody gave him the money. There were several of us there), he gave us the gun, and we drove off in different directions.

All of that was (and is) 100% legal.

I want a Colt M1911 I found...the S/N is 900k plus which according to a link you sent me puts it's made date in 1943...it's used for sure but he tore it all down and put 20 or 30 rounds through it and said it's a fine gun, no problems...he wants $800 for it...I really can't find another vintage Colt here...is that a reasonable price or does it matter?

Isn't it STRANGE that it contained photo's and video of a visit during the President GWBush administration? All of which probably was already presented to her by that same administration...and is probably recorded on White House database? Mind Boggling...

You really need to stop the crap about Fox News. CNN and MSNBC are far more biased in their reporting. I do not remember the last time I saw anyone with a conservative bent on either of those cable channels.

Grips don't fall off Kimbers - damn fine gun. Add the Crimson Trace laser grips and you have a classy gift. Practical/tactical too. Also love my KAHR PM45 for carry. Absolutely unique trigger pull.
