We are each circling the drain. Along the river vortex we rise from the seeds we've sewn. Some pass through never knowing nor wanting to know. Others find infinite survival in the higher baptismal flow.

The spectrum of human mental dispositions runs the gamut.
John Brown was a Christian, and some would say a terrorist.
Joan of Arc saw visions, and she would draw scrutiny from a shrink, if she ever saw one.
So would John the Baptist, for sure.
It defies pat analysis, IMHO.
Good subject for a Masters thesis.

Our Government Engaged In EXTORTION With Our Banks!
By Judge Andrew Napolitano
FOX News Senior Judicial Analyst
The Federal government committed extortion and they’re not being held accountable. What’s next? Listen to this: I recently met with the Chair and CEO of one of the country’s top 10 bank holding companies. His bank is worth in excess of $250 billion, has no bad debt, no credit default swaps, no liquidity problems, and no subprime loans. He told me that he and others were forced by Treasury and FDIC threats to take TARP funds, even though he did not want or need them. There is simply no authority in the U.S. Constitution for Congress to exercise the level of control it now seeks over private industry.
The FDIC — with Treasury backing — threatened to conduct public audits of his bank unless his board created and issued a class of stock for the Feds to buy. The audit, which he is confident his bank would survive, would cost it millions in employee time, bad press, and consequent lost business.
He pleaded with the Feds to leave his successful bank alone. He begged his board to let him tell the Feds to take a hike. But they gave in. The Feds are now just a tiny shareholder, but want to begin asserting more and more control. This is a classic extortion: Controlling someone’s free will by threatening to perform a lawful act. (Blackmail is the threat is to perform an unlawful act in order to control someone else’s free will.) There are no exceptions in the statutes prohibiting extortion for government persons
This happened in September 2008, but the demands for more control are more recent. It sounds to me like Paulson, Geithner, Bernanke, and Sheila Blair have all read a biography of Benito Mussolini. I guess they skipped the last chapter.
There is simply no authority in the U.S. Constitution for Congress to exercise the level of control it now seeks over private industry. In fact, this level of control will wind up costing the businesses that took TARP (voluntarily or involuntarily) money since they will lose key employees who will go to work elsewhere and because the reporting requirements will take time and time is money. The Constitution basically says that if the government wants to take time or freedom or money from someone or something, it must sue for it. It cannot just give itself the authority to do so via legislation. ...

J. Michael Straczynski, the creator and writer of Babylon 5, is an atheist, and yet treated religion quite respectfully and very well in the TV show.
In fact, one of the most powerful episodes (though not part of the story line), is Passing Through Gethsemane, which treats several aspects of crime, punishment, and religion.
So not all atheists are evil.

Neither. Not believing in God does not equate to evil or immorality. A person can be an atheist and still lead a moral life, where moral is defined in terms of what is accepted in society.
People who do believe in God can potentially lead evil or immoral lives. It's all in what you do in the world.

re: #40 J.D.
I'm worried about shenanigans like this. But first consider:
- Napolitano is given to fits of exaggeration
- Banks that offer FDIC insurance have to follow FDIC dictate
- Almost everything the govt does is extortion.
Now for what may be behind the FDIC move, this is what I've heard: The Feds are worried that "sick" banks will be abandoned for sound ones, and that may cause some of the "sick" banks like Citi to go under, or at least require billions more in taxpayer aid. They are trying to avoid this by forcing all banks to jump on the TARP bandwagon whether they need to or not.
Now I don't put it past the power grabbers in Obama's administration from biting off too much, given the (allegedly) dire situation that Obama doesn't want to "waste" in his pursuit of anti-Capitalism. But this is something that can get hashed out in the courts. FDR lost tons of battles in the courts, and the Carter/LBJ era judges are becoming few and far between.

President "Bobby": In the garden.
Chance the Gardener: Yes. In the garden, growth has it seasons. First comes spring and summer, but then we have fall and winter. And then we get spring and summer again.
President "Bobby": Spring and summer.
Chance the Gardener: Yes.
President "Bobby": Then fall and winter.
Chance the Gardener: Yes.
Benjamin Rand: I think what our insightful young friend is saying is that we welcome the inevitable seasons of nature, but we're upset by the seasons of our economy.
Chance the Gardener: Yes! There will be growth in the spring!
Benjamin Rand: Hmm!

• "Why do I keep dropping things?"
• "It’s the shoons."
• "What are shoons?"
• "Invisible beings that pull things out of your hands and throw them on the floor."
• "Why would I believe that?"
• "Well, if you can’t disprove it, you have to believe it."
• "But you didn’t prove it."
• "I can feel them. You can feel them too You’re just in denial."
• "Well I don’t believe it."
• "So you are an ashoonist."
• "What’s an ashoonist?"
• "One who arbitrarily refuses to believe in shoons. You wonder why you drop things, but you arbitrarily reject the explanation."
• "Okay then, I’m an ashoonist."
• "But ashoonists are all cynics and killjoys! Is that the kind of company you want to keep?"
What a silly way to argue! Or is it? If you separate the method of argument from the content, then you might notice that it is the most common of all methods of argument: the arbitrary declaration. They say that something is so, and you have to either disprove it or agree with it. Refusing to do either is joining the Meanies.
It’s a paradox. You cannot reject an assertion without reason, but you could waste the whole day finding reasons to reject arbitrary assertions. An epistemology of reason solves the paradox by taking away permission to make assertions in the first place without reasons.
Come to think of it, where did that permission come from? If an assertion does not come with an observable connection to reality, why would anybody pay attention to it? Well, if it has to be either right or wrong, then you have to decide which, and you have to be reasonable. So you can’t reject anything without disproving it.
But what if a statement could be something else besides right or wrong? What if it could also be simply meaningless?
Right and wrong are relationships to reality – correspondence and non-correspondence. To judge a statement as right or wrong, you compare it to reality, by finding what part of reality it compares to. If a statement does not say what part of reality it compares to, then it is presented without connection to reality. It could mean all sorts of things, depending on where it fits in reality. Since that is not specified, it means nothing. It conveys words, but not meaning. Since you cannot call it right, and you cannot call it wrong, you call it arbitrary. Arbitrary means lacking any evidence of a relationship to reality.
To treat arbitrary assertions as right is to be a self-made sucker. To treat them as wrong is to try judging without evidence. The objective way is to realize that assertions without evidence are meaningless. No matter how much emotion they contain, nothing has been said.
Here’s a completion of the original argument:
• "Wait! Before you told me about the shoons, was I a shoonist, or an ashoonist?"
• "Well, neither. That word just meant nothing to you."
• "And it still means nothing to me. Try me again when you’ve got evidence."

If you go to the Museum of Natural History in Manhattan, there is a descending ramp which is the exit from the Planetarium. It is a time line for creation, and as you descend the long spiral ramp, it takes you through the ages of the universe and earth. It is a long descent.
At the end is a human hair, which represents the entire time that hominids have been around, in the scale of that representation.
So, humans are either the very crown of creation, or a mere blip on the cosmic radar screen.

John Brown challenges me. His cause was righteous. His means were horrifying, and without a doubt terroristic--and yet, eventually, his cause, among other things, would lead to a war that make his actions look, if not mild, right at home. re: #74 Dr. Shalit
Atheists - NOT MONSTERS - In my way of reasoning - WRONG, AND Still Fellow Humans. That is all.
-S-
My experience is that atheists get confused and lost along the way in life - an intellectual 'cynical pause'. I rejected G-d early in life as I had dogma/scripture jammed down my throat without rhyme, reason, nor rational explanation (before Dad figured things out too) - this did not sit well with me because I was/am a 'prove it' kind of person. Then things changed. It's a long story and I won't bore anyone here, but I did find my way in nature, marveling at sand crabs on a beach in Thailand.
Everyone needs to find their own 'truth'. The key is to not jam it down the throats of others by legal means. Be peaceful in whatever truth you find for yourself.

John Brown challenges me. His cause was righteous. His means were horrifying, and without a doubt terroristic--and yet, eventually, his cause, among other things, would lead to a war that make his actions look, if not mild, right at home. I look at him, and try to assess him, and it's not easy. What do others make of the man?
As a Kansan, he is generally an embarassment to me. He fought against a horrible evil by horribly evil means. I don't know how much he wrestled in his mind with the immorality of his actions, but you can't fight for man's freedom by arbitrarily picking up a gun and telling others that you are their judge, jury, and executioner.

Want to buy some French rifles? Never fired and only dropped once.
Actually that's not true. Frenchmen can and will put up a stiff fight for something they believe in. Their main problem is that their political and military leadership tends to be fouled up most of time.
For example:
"The French as a nation have a long history of insisting on being different and claiming it's a superior practice. A case in point is that at the beginning of the First World War is that while all other nations had adopted earth toned uniforms for their soldiers the French politicians INSISTED that their soldiers go into combat with the traditional dark blue coats and bright red trousers. As you can imagine this didn't work out well for the French Army. The French also had the best bayonets mounted on the worst rifle, but that's another story."

Did you know that wombats are not from Australia, but actually native to Remulak?
Ahem... I digress...
The world scientific community - and you know that there are a lot of Jews in that group, has been working hard to bring this about. They were of course, outflanked by the Oil Companies, who selflessly think only for the good of your puny species.
We believe that this ruse will work better than communism did. Of course, in the interests of recycling (we do that on Remulak too) we did need to refurbish some of our better communist operatives in the form of scientists.
As always, your check is in the mail, and we will make certain that the wombats pass you and your future servants by.

I saw that down thread and had to go back an ding it up. That is very good. I've always thought atheism would be a comforting religious viewpoint. Things don't get any worse from here, and it'll all be over soon, anyway. I can think of lots of things worse than that.
Look... as Matt Groening said, "if God exists, I'm sure he'll forgive me for not believing in him."
And if he exists, but is not so forgiving, he's a tyrant who wasn't worthy of worship in the first place.

Atheists:
Gambling that the roulette ball won't land on red or black.
That's illogical. An atheist would gamble that it would fall on either red or black. However, they wouldn't gamble that an external spiritual force would be able to control were it fell. Thus it would simply be a matter of physics and chance.

Look... as Matt Groening said, "if God exists, I'm sure he'll forgive me for not believing in him."
And if he exists, but is not so forgiving, he's a tyrant who wasn't worthy of worship in the first place.
He's paraphrasing Freud.

Well said. Honestly the horrors of slavery in America, were sufficiently vile that I have a very hard time condemning any actions (short of random murder or rape) that a slave might take to secure his freedom. If the overseer or the master gets killed, can you really blame the slave who had been abused and degraded, whipped and separated from his home and his family? If I were there, I would want to kill master too.

02 April 2009
Several readers have forwarded this important story. Thank you.
If FOX is right and the government is wrong (not surprising), this will be a feather in FOX's cap!
The Myth of 90 Percent: Only a Small Fraction of Guns in Mexico Come From U.S.
While 90 percent of the guns traced to the U.S. actually originated in the United States, the percent traced to the U.S. is only about 17 percent of the total number of guns reaching Mexico.
By William La Jeunesse and Maxim Lott
FOXNews.com
EXCLUSIVE: You've heard this shocking "fact" before -- on TV and radio, in newspapers, on the Internet and from the highest politicians in the land: 90 percent of the weapons used to commit crimes in Mexico come from the United States.
-- Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said it to reporters on a flight to Mexico City.
-- CBS newsman Bob Schieffer referred to it while interviewing President Obama.
-- California Sen. Dianne Feinstein said at a Senate hearing: "It is unacceptable to have 90 percent of the guns that are picked up in Mexico and used to shoot judges, police officers and mayors ... come from the United States."

What do red and black represent in your little allegory? What exactly do you propose they are they gambling? Is God represented by the House? You know, the House that wants to win all the money for itself? Are Christians working for the House? Should atheists be calling shenanigans?

Atheists: evil monsters, or immoral monsters?
Both of course!
:)
Well, since 'monsters' would 'drop out of the equation', we're left with "Evil or Immoral?", and that's just silly. Most of the time, I find atheists are either A) Offended by crimes committed by the religious, B) Offended by the evil God allows in the world, or C) Traumatized in or around a church as a child. Humans being humans, there's a decent D) None of the above contingent.
Evil and immoral usually require an affirmative inversion, not just a denial. See Churchill, Ward; Chomsky, Noam; Galloway, George; etc...

Immorality == evil by definition. ("Evil" is meaningless without reference to a moral canon.) If the alternatives were amorality and evil, then there would be a philosophical question...
It is harder for humans to follow a moral code without a religion. Philosophies are the "Virtual Machines" of morality; they don't necessarily define "moral" and "evil" properly, but they help our brains understand how to live according to morality and to avoid evil. Religions are simplified and managed forms of philosophy.
Aristotelianism strikes me as a sturdy, object-oriented system - sort of a "C++". Mediaeval Catholicism made an effort to buffer that system and to provide a few additional features - call it "Java" (Orthodoxy can be "C#" in this analogy).
Atheism cuts through all of that - they're back to coding in Assembler. You can get some impressive results from Assembler... IF you're a genius. Unfortunately most humans aren't geniuses. Coding in Assembler, for most of us, will crash the system.
I expect most humans, if they lose faith in God, will also lose faith in their own culture and ultimately in the future. Atheists are not good at, for instance, breeding.

Given that he/she/it exists means the gene pool goes back generations ... now, whether it will propagate further ... that's another matter all together.
We can call him a shim. I was thinking perhaps a lab experiment of sort. I'm pretty sure the gene pool stops were the shim sits.

I think the latest hobgoblin is Splenda, made with a manufacturing process that uses the evil chlorine, scourge of mankind. It's fun to mess with those kooks' minds and get them talking about table salt - made from sodium and chlorine. They think chlorine is deadly, but they can't explain why table salt is safe, they refuse to give it up, and they tend to run away from the discussion with smoke pouring out of their ears. It's almost as much fun as troll roasting.

Eees Beeeg! It isn't just that the round is almost as big around as my thumb, it is also long. That's one of the reasons I've been scoping out the .50 Beowulf. There's just something cool about a half-inch caliber.
If you want big, fat calibers, ever think of checking out some old black powder guns? A Civil War musket was typically, what, .68 caliber?

.54 was most common, followed by .58 and then some bigger ones, mostly Euro leftovers in the South.

Good critique. They are missing some great character development opportunities. I know they have the general story plotted out but Jack and Kate are weak actors. They keep hinting that they're going to make Sawyer more interesting but they don't do it. He was a much better character when he was hoarding supplies in his tent and trying to sell them. Hugo is under utilized. She's probably a throw away character but Sawyer's chick is a great actress. I'd like to see them utilize their cast a little better.

I shouldn't have done that. I went looking for a specific picture of Diana with William and Harry- her running to embrace them when she'd returned from a trip. She was a loving mother, and her love for all children is/was unquestionable. Whatever else you can say about the woman, she tried to make a positive difference instead of being just a pampered royal. Any comparisons of Diana to mrs. obama is a gross insult in my opinion.
I'm particularly sensitive to motherless children, so I need to go calm down. I will see you guys later.

Because it's not a matter of logical reasoning. It a matter of faith. It's neither rational or irrational, it's a separate realm of spirituality. It's just is just a valid as real to those of faith as the physical world is to to logic, reason and evidence.

Sky Wizard! FLying Spaghetti monster! Whatever you want to call it...my first post I'll admit was rather extreme...its just I fail to meet believers who have impressed me with any logical reasoning as to why God MUST exist.
*puts down shot glass* You were needlessly hostile and aggressive and left a poor first impression.
It's pointless to argue that God must exist, or that he must not. It's not a matter of logic. It's a matter of faith. You don't have faith, or don't see evidence, fine. Other people do. As a nonbeliever, you are not necessarily evil, and as believers, others are not necessarily stupid. What's ridiculous, and what we're making fun of here, is demonizing the other side. And how ironic is it that the mot juste has religious connotations?

I like that one. On Dish Network, A&E, Biography, History and History International are all together. That's probably more than a third of my viewing right there. I think a true atheist should believe in the rights of others to have faith in their own religion and accept that. With respect to the United States they must also respect the tradition of both our history and the Christian citizens. The social point of atheism is not to force or argue with others to not believe in God but to only attain a personal position atheism on their own or for some within their own group.
Atheism should not be confused with anti-theism. In the case of anti-theists then you will find those that want to "stomp" on other peoples faith. The two should not be confused with one another. I was speaking theologically, not personally. Atheism says, "There is no deity. Period. No room for discussion." My understanding of agnosticism is that our knowledge is inadequate to say definitively and scientifically, "There is a deity(ies), or, there is no deity (ies)." I'm sure there are many wonderful atheists, as you are. My understanding of a supremacist belief is that it holds itself up as the be all and end all of all beliefs. Rubbish. I know many atheists and several (not all) are absolutely rabid about it. They would quite like to abolish any public display of religious belief and positively foam at the mouth if anyone dares to say a prayer in a public school. I regard them as nutcases who really need to get a life.
I don't think the majority of atheists want to abolish public displays of religious belief...again its about atheist vs anti-theist...I wouldn't have a problem with a prayer said in my school. But I would have a problem if it was in someway forced upon me or I was coerced into joining along...

I already got 800 on SAT writing so I feel my duty to use correct english has run its course. :D (I jest I jest...or do I...?)
We've had a number of trolls recently who seem to feel spelling, capitalization and punctuation are for the little people. I was an English major, so deliberate disregard for the conventions bugs me. It seems disrespectful to the reader.
If you took the SAT writing portion, you are no more than 21 or 22 years old, I believe. Ole Miss?

Yup. I didn't realize how long it has been since we've last seen Locke until he appeared at the end of yesterday's episode.
I'm pretty upset that in the episode, which was titled "whatever happened, happened" - no Faraday appearance (which is silly considering these are HIS words) and ultimately, there were no answers to the time travel bonanza.

Who said: "Two vast and brainless heads of stone
Stand in the thread. Near them in the comments,
Half sunk, a shattered nickname lies, whose frown
And wrinkled lip and sneer of cold command
Tell that its sculptor well those idiocies read
Which yet survive, time stamped with these lifeless things,
The hand that mocked them and the heart that fed.
And on the martyr post these words appear:
`My name is (fill in blank), King of Kings:
Look on my works, ye mighty, and despair!'
Nothing beside remains. Round the decay
Of that colossal wreck, boundless and bare,
The lone and level bandwidths stretch far away.

Ah, but it's the "tiny minority of extremists" that occupy the media and tie up the courts.
The most infamous of course being Michael Newdow who most recently brought suit for "so help me God" with regards to the inauguration. Hitchens of course describes himself as being anti-theist -- at least he's honest. O'Hare of course was beyond words. Hawkins sometimes goes off the deep end.
Newdow is a pathetic figure with an odd background. It's unfortunate but in this media driven society that sometimes the oddest figures become the "mouthpiece" for many ideologies, faiths, or non-faiths as it were.

Atheists: evil monsters, or immoral monsters?
Ah, the dilemma of the false alternatives, i.e. have you stopped beating your wife yet?
This is rational atheism:
Every argument for God and every attribute ascribed to Him rests on a false metaphysical premise. None can survive for a moment on a correct metaphysics . . . .
Existence exists, and only existence exists. Existence is a primary: it is uncreated, indestructible, eternal. So if you are to postulate something beyond existence—some supernatural realm—you must do it by openly denying reason, dispensing with definitions, proofs, arguments, and saying flatly, “To Hell with argument, I have faith.” That, of course, is a willful rejection of reason.
Objectivism advocates reason as man’s sole means of knowledge, and therefore, for the reasons I have already given, it is atheist. It denies any supernatural dimension presented as a contradiction of nature, of existence. This applies not only to God, but also to every variant of the supernatural ever advocated or to be advocated. In other words, we accept reality, and that’s all.
Leonard Peikoff, “The Philosophy of Objectivism”
Now doesn't rational atheism make dispensing with the creationist's arguments so much more simple?

Yes, I completely agree. Sun has dropped of the face of the earth...the Ajira Airways survivors have been ignored...Faraday and Widmore have been ignored, even though they seemed like they were going to be very critical every episode this season. I REALLY want to see more of Widmore and his history with the Island and what exactly happened to get him exiled.
I also don't think it was important to dedicate a whole episode to point out that Kate "needed Aaron." They could have exposed that fact in a separate scene.

re: #268 The Other Les
So I take it that "not being overrun by Nazi Germany" was not "something they believed in"? Given the antisemitism of France, I could see that.

What passage? Peikoff's or mine? And why?
Peikoff.
I think his language is sloppy and imprecise, and that he goes completely off the rails creating false dichotomies and straw men.
So if you are to postulate something beyond existence—some supernatural realm—you must do it by openly denying reason, dispensing with definitions, proofs, arguments, and saying flatly, “To Hell with argument, I have faith.” That, of course, is a willful rejection of reason.
This strikes me as a pretty ignorant caricature...worthy of Dawkins.
It denies any supernatural dimension presented as a contradiction of nature, of existence. This applies not only to God, but also to every variant of the supernatural ever advocated or to be advocated. In other words, we accept reality, and that’s all.
The idea of a transcendent reality beyond the natural doesn't contradict "nature", neither does it contradict "existence". Contrary to what Peikoff uses as his starting point (if he's actually argued convincingly for it somewhere, I've missed it), I think it's far more rational to argue from the facts nature and "existence" to the logical necessity of some sort of transcendent causal and ontological ground for all being.
To me Peikoff comes off as a not particularly well read materialist.

Cross-posted from an earlier thread in response to Alberta Peon:
Your response is intelligent, and well-argued. I think it wrong for three reasons:
(1) an atheist is as committed to the theological view that G-d does NOT exist, as a devout Jew is to the theological view that G-d DOES exist. Neither view is capable of proof, and hence, each must rely on faith.
(2) There's an enormous amount of historical and cultural information out there. Assuming that the atheist carefully studies all of it, what objective basis does he have to prioritize it into more important and less important? Aren't the priorities he sets necessarily his own? And don't they, in turn, derive from his subjective opinions about what is important? The atheist risks complete solipsism, the notion that he makes all of his own rules, without regard to the interests of others.
(3) Like a hedgehog, religion has one big thing going for it: it has created a framework for moral living based upon belief in a spiritual dimension, and in a G-d perceptible only in part. That framework certainly can be examined and challenged by skeptics (and it should be), but it is a cultural and historical reference point susceptible of (relatively) rapid study, testing, and adoption or rejection. Another advantage: it already has been adopted by large numbers of people, so a common cultural language exists (in Judaism, Tanak, and in Christianity, the Bible) with which people can communicate abstract, moral, spiritual and mystical concepts to each other.

Well, well, well. What a fun thread. I missed the fun too but there will be others. Thursday was spent preparing for interviews on Friday. Any computer time was rationed out for only the necessities on those days.
As an atheist, it hasn't been often that I have been viciously insulted for disbelieving in a 'higher power' of creator-like abilities. For the most part, I've had civilized discussions (save for alt.atheism in the early 1990s - you know, the birthplace of the Knights of BAAWA, The Evil Atheist Conspiracy and the Invisible Pink Unicorn) with theists. IN fact, the last time I remember when I was insulted for not believing was by a pagan! Only in the SF Bay Area, right?
Anyway, excellent thread Charles.

I'm always a day late (or more) due to my location in the middle of Arabia.
Atheists, or anyone else, can live a completely moral life without the slightest belief in God. The problem is they cannot logically explain where the concept of right and wrong come from, and twist themselves into knots doing so. So are they monsters/evil? No more than anyone else. Can they explain why murdering babies is wrong for all people and all times?
I leave it open.
