Three Policemen Shot in Pittsburgh

US News • Views: 3,509

Today in Pittsburgh, three police officers were murdered during a domestic disturbance call by a 23-year old man who reportedly feared that Barack Obama would ban guns.

Police did not immediately release the gunman’s identity, but his friends identified him as Richard Poplawski, 23. They described him as a young man who thought the Obama administration would ban guns.

One friend, Edward Perkovic, said Poplawski feared “the Obama gun ban that’s on the way” and “didn’t like our rights being infringed upon.” Another longtime friend, Aaron Vire, said Poplawski feared that President Obama was going to take away his rights, though he said he “wasn’t violently against Obama.”

Perkovic, a 22-year-old who said he was Poplawski’s best friend, said he got a call at work from him in which he said, “Eddie, I am going to die today. … Tell your family I love them and I love you.”

careless words cost lives, they used during WWII. Always a good idea to tone down the rhetoric.

My thoughts and prayers to those the Officers left behind.

I am so very hopeful the Left does not take advantage of the uttering of a mad man to forward their misguided cause.

No, the guy was pro gun. The Left will use it to try for more strict gun laws. If he was suffering from Bush Derangement Syndrome, then he would be a hero to them.

Oh…and thanks, Chicago Tribune. I couldn’t find a small, isloated backwater village like Pittsburgh without the aid of your map.

Condolences to the Police families…it is hard to be a policeman these days.

Friends said he had been upset recently about losing his job and that he feared the Obama administration was poised to ban guns.

The job lost was the trigger, the rest is BS.

Unfortunately, we may see a lot more violence if the economy does not recover.

He will be idolized and enshrined as the reason why there should be no guns. The evidence from other countries that have such bans will be once again conveniently ignored.

Another self ordained loser that wants pity from the nation by killing some innocent people. MSM don’t do his service to him. Portray him as a fool.

A person can always just go work a crap job and life will be as miserable as they want it to be. But they’ll survive and they won’t harm anyone.

This one at the first pass would appear to be also.

The left will make hay with these shootings.

This Pittsburgh lunatic is only gonna’ make matters worse, not better.

Rights also have responsibilities. Criminality and irresponsibility do not help.

They will use this incident to beat over the head of anyone that is against gun control. And, these are the same people that seem to be giving a pass to the black guy in Oakland that killed cops.

Insane….our world seems to be going insane.

Channel 11 News reporter Rick Earle has confirmed in addition to the 3 dead, 2 other officers were injured.

Sources tell Earle one of the injured officers was shot in the hand. The other broke his leg jumping over a fence.

Police said more than 70 shots were fired.

When police arrived on the scene, Poplawski was shooting from a window. Police returned shots.

Sources tell Earle one of the officers who was killed lives in the Stanton Heights neighborhood. He was off duty at the time, but came to the house after hearing shots.

That officer was a 13-year-veteran of the Pittsburgh police force.

Earle reported the other two officers who died joined the force in 2007.

The suspect was using 3 weapons, a long-arm rifle, pistol and an AK-47. Police sources said Poplawski was wearing a bullet proof vest.

Channel 11 News has learned Poplawski was training to become a U.S. Marine at one point, but sources said he was kicked out of boot camp.

He was also kicked out of North Catholic High School in Pittsburgh.

Police said he is 23 years old. Police sources said he came home drunk last night and got in a fight with his mother.

Negotiators were able to get Poplawski to surrender.

He was taken to UPMC Presbyterian with injuries.

The *new* *sociological* theory on the proliferation of child porn and rise in pedophile-ofenses:

People who peddle child pr0n are now embedding child pr0n into mainstream adult pr0n. The adult pr0n watchers stumble across pr0n images of children, are already in an aroused state, and transfer their [insert your own word here] onto children from adults and voila! a new child porn addict is born.

The bottom line (this new sociological theory) is that new “pedophiles” are “created” against their will due to the cunning, sly ways of porn pushers and they must be considered to be victims of the porn industry. i.e., it is not their fault, they are victims.

(Do NOT yell at me ….I am merely passing on what is being peddled in academia regarding child porn and pedophiles.)

Here is the information on the primary weapon used by the military the M-16 rifle A1 - A-4.
The M16A2 rifle entered service in the 1980s, chambered to fire the standard NATO cartridge, the Belgian-designed M855/M856 cartridge.[3] The M16A2 is a select-fire rifle (semi-automatic fire, three-round-burst fire) incorporating design elements requested by the Marine Corps:[3] an adjustable, windage rear-sight; a stock 5/8-inch longer; heavier barrel; case deflector for left-hand shooters; and cylindrical hand guards.[3] The fire mode selector is on the receiver’s left side. The M16A2 is still the primary rifle in the US Navy, Coast Guard, Air Force, and still is in heavy use in the Army and Marine Corps.

The M16A3 rifle is an M16A2 rifle with an M16A1’s fire-mode control (semi-automatic fire, automatic fire) used only by the U.S. Navy.

The M16A4 rifle was standard issue for the United States Marine Corps in Operation Iraqi Freedom; it replaced the M16A2 in front line units. In the US Army, the M16A2 rifle is being supplemented with two rifle models, the M16A4 and the M4 Carbine, as the standard issue Assault rifle. The M16A4 rifle has a flat-top receiver developed for the M4 Carbine, a handguard with four Picatinny rails for mounting a sight, laser, night vision device, forward handgrip, removable handle, and a flashlight.

From what I’ve seen, the longer barrel doesn’t really affect accuracy much. We were on the reactive ranges in Florida and I was dropping targets out to 300 meters without difficulty. Even got a sharpshooter medal for it, but I’m not allowed to wear it :)

Now, how much the barrel affects power, I’m not sure, since I’ve never used the M4 in battle. Punching through paper targets is one thing … whether it’d drop Omar the Bomb Maker at the same distance is a different question.

No, he will be demonized by the left and the mainstream media, unlike the killer in Oakland, because he was white and disliked Obama and feared a gun ban. And his actions will be used to demonize others who do not wish to kill cops, but who share his fear and loathing of Obama and gun control.

It’s the responsibility of society to shun people who kill policeman. There should be no glory in it at all. There should be no agenda in it. There should be only repulsion of the act and of the people who are indifferent to it.

i bet if you go to any newspaper comment thread on this you will see some yucky behavior.

Barrel length affects muzzle velocity, as does powder load, powder burn rate etc…

Basically a too short barrel the gasses don’t have to to accelerate the round to the maximum possible before the muzzle is reached. Too long and the gasses have expanded and the friction in the barrel will slow the round.

The weight, aerodynamics and muzzle velocity all effect how much energy is delivered down range and how much is lost going down range.

Death Penalty Policy by State

Washington State may soon lose part of the death penalty. Prisoners here get to choose the method, hanging being one of them. A prisoner chose hanging and then started packing on a lot of weight. Now he is saying hanging would be cruel and unusual punishment since he is too heavy to be hanged, he might be decapitated instead of having his neck broken.

Personally I don’t see how his getting decapitated is cruel. He murdered and so deserves what he asked for.

M4 would a tad slower, 2900fps vs 3200fps IIRC. The shorter barrel is handy in closer quarters. That can be change with a faster powder if the chamber could handle the increased pressure.

Automatic rifle is a term generally used to describe a self-loading rifle chambered for a rifle cartridge, capable of delivering both semi- and fully automatic fire. This “select-fire” capability, as well as the (general) use of magazine-fed rifle ammunition, differentiate it from other classes of automatic firearm such as the machine gun and submachine gun.

This is exactly how we get bullshit terms like “assault weapon” being thrown around.

Words have meanings. Semi-automatic means 1 shot per trigger pull, period.

By your definition, the M-61 Vulcan is semi-automatic, since it typically fires 100 round bursts.

By the way, if 3 round burst is semi-automatic fire, you should be able to buy an M16A2 at your local gun store, but you can’t.

Sorry, but I gotta agree with the other guys.

The word “automatic”, when referring to a weapon, simply means that it is capable of firing more than one round without requiring the user to perform any actions.

Now, yes, you can limit a weapons ability. As an extreme example, the chainguns that fighter-jets carry have a control mechanism which can be programmed to only allow a certain number of rounds to be fired. But if I go and set the counter to only allow one 5 round burst, that doesn’t turn the gun into a semi-automatic weapon, it just means I’ve limited the number of rounds it can fire.

re: #257 c6gunner

Sorry, but I gotta agree with the other guys.

The word “automatic”, when referring to a weapon, simply means that it is capable of firing more than one round without requiring the user to perform any actions.

Now, yes, you can limit a weapons ability. As an extreme example, the chainguns that fighter-jets carry have a control mechanism which can be programmed to only allow a certain number of rounds to be fired. But if I go and set the counter to only allow one 5 round burst, that doesn’t turn the gun into a semi-automatic weapon, it just means I’ve limited the number of rounds it can fire.

Exactly. The aircraft mounted Vulcan cannon fires 100 round bursts of 20mm rounds. That doesn’t make it semi-automatic.

Gates Prepares ‘Fundamental Shift’ in Defense Funding Priorities

The fiscal 2010 funding choices in the announcement will represent the first major defense policy decisions of President Obama’s administration. Specific details of the budget are not expected until the first week of May, but Gates will make the unusual move of announcing several major program decisions weeks ahead of the budget release, according to the spokesman.

“These are not changes to the margins. This is a fundamental shift in direction,” Pentagon spokesman Geoff Morrell said. “And the secretary’s point of view argues for an unconventional approach in explaining that shift to the American people.”

What excruciating pain?

The execution of the condemned in most states involves three separate injections (in sequential order):
Sodium thiopental: ultra-short action barbiturate, an anaesthetic agent capable of rendering the person unconscious in a few seconds.
Pancuronium: non-depolarizing muscle relaxant, causes complete, fast and sustained paralysis of the skeletal striated muscles, including the diaphragm and the rest of the respiratory muscles; this would eventually cause death by asphyxiation.
Potassium chloride: stops the heart, and thus causes death by cardiac arrest.

Another interesting unintended consequence of the UK firearms ban was an increase in the incidence of criminals using submachine guns and other full auto weapons.

He is responding to these guys:
no prevention

and here are a couple of public policy guys at Duke that have a more systematic analysis and claim no deterrence against burglaryno prevention again

So anyway, I think the takeaway might be that it’s hard to say - and it won’t be settled with my Google Scholar search, but it might be noted that the most reputable research organization out of the three I posted there is certainly the National Bureau of Economic Research, so we might initially give them a little more credence.

What is the deal with all these cops getting killed lately?….that is tragic.

The perps are using semi-automatic rifles (aka assault rifles) and they easily defeat body armor. Ironically, Obama’s election has caused a run on these high power rifles. Had Obama not been elected there would be fewer on the street. And if Obama tries to confiscate those already on the street (the last assault weapon ban only effected newly manufactured weapons) we might end up with both sides of the gun debate seeing their worst case scenarios come to life.

I know. That is my position too… I hate people calling the AR-15 (civilian version of m-16) an automatic rifle… its semi-automatic, but I understand what lobois saying, if it fires more than one round for each squeeze of the trigger its auto.

Probably a whole bunch of other crimes, too. But, the whole Bulger/Mafia/FBI fiasco in MA that led to multiple life sentences for innocent men (I believe half died in prison, the others spent decades behind bars) made me distrustful of trusting ANY Government body to determine who lives and who dies based on an often corrupted/deceived Judiciary.

Here is an article that exams the relationship between firearm deaths and gun ownerships rates:
The Journal of Trauma: Injury, Infection, and Critical Care :Volume 49(6)December 2000pp 985-988

The takeaway: there is a strong and linear cross-national relationship between legal firearm ownership and homicides - although this is without controlling for other possible factors.

Good lord, why do the innocent have to pay the price of another’s stupidity? I can’t imagine what the victims’ families are going through right now, and I pray for the best.

A little while ago, Charles ran a piece about why the right shouldn’t demonize Obama. Here’s the unfortunate proof of what happens when people let hyperbole get away with them. There’re always people who can’t distinguish fear-mongering from reality.

There’s no question Obama will attempt to restrict some types of weapons, but it’s questionable whether Congress will back him on it. The idea doesn’t sit well except in some urban areas. The rest of the Dems want to be re-elected.

I seriously doubt a single issue pushed this guy over the edge, but it’s going to be so easy to distort his actions. This gives the anti-gun crowd another case to use to try to strengthen their position, and it allows the Dems to paint those opposed to Obama and his policies as violent nuts.

I’ve actually become a bit wobbly on the DP in recent years. Too many mistakes have been made and this is one that cannot be undone. That being said,rapist/murderers and cop killers can go far as I’m concerned.

I agree that there so be NO doubt for executions, but when that’s the case, as in this instance, execution should follow swiftly.

You’re right, my mistake - although I should point out that the firearm homicide ratio looks even worse in the United States in comparison to Germany and the UK.

Again not even close to what I was talking about. The UK banned firearms yet they still have homicides using them.

The site you linked to has countries such as Belarus, Brazil, Jamaica, and South Africa with SIGNIFICANTLY HIGHER firearm homicide rate than the US. What do you make of that?

I know. That is my position too… I hate people calling the AR-15 (civilian version of m-16) an automatic rifle… its semi-automatic, but I understand what lobois saying, if it fires more than one round for each squeeze of the trigger its auto.
The definition I had learned was if you can empty the mag with one trigger pull and holding it down, then its auto… if you cant then its not. But I will stand down on this one Lobo seems to be right.

I’m not talking about mass killers or shooting sprees. My reference to race was about serial killers.

But psychologists are now questioning the difference. There pretty much is none. Just the perceived motive as determined in retrospect by the observer is the current thinking. There are many papers on the subject. And again, Hispanics are all out of proportion to their numbers in this regard. The white observation is a media canard. The fact is that serial killers in slums do not get the notoriety. But they are there.

Statistics are not very satisfying.

For instance, the US Post Office has a very high percentage of successful mail delivery, more than 99% last time I checked.

However, if it is your mail that has not been delivered, then 100% of your mail for that day was unsuccessful.

that’s cute, but statistics sure are useful - for example we need them to realize things like smoking causes cancer, seatbelts prevent auto deaths, and playing the lottery is not a good way to become a millionaire . Might not do you any good as an individual - but, in the long-run, we know that a country with fewer smokers also has less cancer and things like that give countries a foundation to work with for public policy.

That was probably what this was. I’d never seen one before, which is somewhat unusual for me. I haven’t been keeping track as much as I did as a kid. I used to be about firearms the way a truly dedicated sports-fan can be about things like baseball statistics. I knew all the obscure details, and really could use any major small arm at use anywhere in the world. I probably still could do that. There hasn’t been any fundamental shift in how firearms work since the 1960s. That’s not to say there haven’t been improvements, even large improvements (gas-piston AR/M-4 comes immediately to mind), but they all still work the same general way that they have for almost half a century.

Metal Storm is the first fundamental change since the primed cartridge.

When President Obama addresses the Turkish parliament on Monday, he will have the chance to fulfill a campaign promise. Before the secular legislature of a Muslim-majority country — and with the entire Muslim ummahummah listening — he can state plainly that the United States is not at war with Islam.

Well, he already called the United States arrogant and dismissive in front of a European audience. This must be the part where he surrenders us to Islam.

I’m not trying to ignore what you’re saying - I’m just responding to the anecdotes about Germany and the UK having homicides with firearms. Who would claim that they didn’t? And I don’t think any sensible person that would want to ban firearms in the United States (I’m not one of them by the way) would claim that it would eliminate firearm deaths. My point in posting that was that despite the fact that there are gun deaths in other countries that have banned them - those death rates are much, much lower than in the United States. That is a fact, and it might indicate that banning guns can prevent murders. We don’t know for sure though. However, when people debate banning guns in the United States, which as people here have indicated is surely going to happen now with the spate of violence, pointing out that Germany and the UK have firearm deaths too is just not useful because a quick check of the facts, as I did, indicates that the rates are much, much lower - it doesn’t help your argument.

Why don’t just make smoking illegal, along with guns?

Why don’t we just bar code babies when they pop out, put a virtual Life Projector in their brain, so that they think they are happy while they live in a bubble for 85 years?

Jayzus. When I was a kid, this was a free country.

The frikkin’ do-gooders have ruined it.

just to clarify. I never said that - and I don’t want to make either illegal - I’m just pointing out that statistics can tell us useful things - we use them all the time - for medicine, public policy, sports, etc. They are the foundation of every scientific discipline. And with every public policy debate, both sides try to use them. We can’t just ignore them when they don’t support our opinion.

Ed the Sneaky & Clever. Sounds like a Monty Python character. :)

I’m impressed you could get a rose to thrive. I put an Eden Blush in our yard and the first year was rewarded with three gorgeous blooms as big as my fist. The next year the worms got to it and nothing we did could save it. I stick to houseplants, especially bamboo.

re: #413 vagabond trader

Yes, I did notice your lovely white rose.I have one of these ancient white rose specimens in my yard.”Ed” was a fascinating guy, fought for and won the crown of England twice. The badge came from “three suns” having been observed in the sky before one of his great victory’s. Everyone in the ranks freaked out and the young Edward coolly responded by stating that it was a sign of approval from the holy trinity. The sun trick was actually a parhelion, which is an atmospheric condition.

He was also pretty tall - his sword is kept in St George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle. Its easily 5’ 8” long … fancy using that in a battle!

I was searching through the PA court system for any records on the perp but only found a “Richard A Poplawski” with a DOB year of 1953. Could be his father but this is an assumption on my part. That indicated two arrests for DUIs and one driving with a suspended license in 2008.

Speculation on my part — for the time being.

Here’s a recent news item with a photo of the perp.

There are lots of Polish-Americans in PA. There are probably quite a few Poplawskis there. Given the birth date, as you say, it is unlikely to be the perp, but could be his father or uncle.

The current hysteria in the gun market and subculture is fueling this paranoia: extravagant rhetoric, hoarding, speculation. Most gun enthusiasts are responsible citizens but this paranoid atmosphere is pushing the fringe elements right over the edge, never a long journey in the first place.

Maybe the gun controllers should back off of their, well, not just rhetoriuc but attempts to codify that rhetoric into law. The Second Amendment is what it is, and it means what it says. There’s really no difference between the gun controllers and their attempts to violate the civil rights of all Americans than the Ku Klux Klan in its attempts to abridge the civil rights of a subset of Americans.

They are both anti-civil rights.

I have no beef with your point. I am not a gun owner, but I would never support repealing the right to bear arms. because if we ever descend to the point that anyone tries to impose a dictatorship on this land, the private gun owners are the ones we will need in order to prevail. But calling Beck out for some of his rhetoric is not unreasonable. I agree with him on many things, but do not share the apocalyptic vision he has been peddling as of late.

DOCUMENTS I RECCOMEND YOU READ BY GOOGLE: “Civil War II” by Tom Chittum “The Protocols of the Elders of Zion” “The Turner Diaries” by Dr. William Pierce “Jewish Supremacy” by Dr. David Duke It Has Even Been Documented In The Communist Manifesto: ““We must realize that our party’s most powerful weapon is racial tension. “By propounding into the consciousness of the dark races that for centuries they have been oppressed by the whites, we can mold them to the program of the Communist Party. “In America we will aim for subtle victory. While inflaming the Negro minority against the whites, we will endeavour to instill in the whites a guilt complex for their exploitation of the Negros. “We will aid the Negros to rise to prominence in every walk of life, in the professions, and in the world of sports and entertainment. With this prestige, the Negro will be able to intermarry with the whites, and begin a process which will deliver America to our cause.” Statement by Israel Cohen, in his book, “A Racial Programme for the Twentieth Century,” 1912, which is also in the Congressional Record, Vol. 103, p. 8559, June 7th, 1957”

Friends described a Richard Poplawski far different from the 22-year-old man accused of gunning down three police officers today — a partier sometimes, a guy in search of an understanding of politics, even a walking comedian.

He was also convinced that the government wanted to take away his guns and his freedom.

“I’ve known this kid my entire life and he was a good kid. He never had bad intentions. He never spoke about harming anybody,” said Edward Perkovic, a lifelong friend who had known Mr. Poplawski since the two paired up at a daycare.

Mr. Poplawski attended Immaculate Conception elementary school and moved on to North Catholic High School. A spokesman for the high school today said that he was expelled, but declined to state a reason.

Mr. Perkovic said his friend stopped attending classes so he could take get his general equivalency diploma then join the Marine Corps.

Records indicate that Mr. Poplawski was dishonorably discharged from the corps during basic training. Friends said he wanted out so he could rejoin his girlfriend.

When that relationship failed, Mr. Poplawski moved for two years to Florida where he worked as a glazier, helping to asemble and replace windows. He returned here in 2006 or 2007.

Mr. Poplawski collaborated with Mr. Perkovic on an Internet show that featured clips —- sometimes from local news broadcasts, other times video from around the town —- where they discussed politics.

Mr. Poplawski lived with his mother and grandmother in Stanton Heights. Friends said his parents had split years ago and that his father “was totally out of the picture.”

This is from the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette and quotes Edward Perkovic. Now I’m not saying it’s not true, but look at the 2nd paragraph. Where’s the backup for that ascertation in this story?

Oh I 100% agree with you about the M-16 family. Once we started switching to the 3 point sling, that was it. It was about as good as it got, at least when I carried it. Lightweight, tons of accessories easily replacable. It’s a great weapon. I do personally think the caliber is too small. I don’t understand the rationale behind shooting to wound. We should not have switched from the 7.62 in my opinion.

Yep - and they weren’t sqeamish about acknowledging their offspring born ‘on the other side of the blanket’, or ‘without benefit of clergy’, as the sayings went …
Isabella and Mortimer were not exactly gentle people either, from what one reads in the history books.

That’s partly due to the fact that the Aristocracy was too inbred and disease prone-their peasant offspring were often the ONLY surviving ones….sad, but true…

Yup, and the food was good too.

Just remember that for each and every one of those ridiculous warning labels someone tried to do/use the product in very the manner which the label says not to do, and subsequently sued the manufacturer about not warning the consumer.

Oh yeah, should you really have to put a warning lable on a gas grill,

just in case you missed my initial question - I’m really curious to know if this is true. I’ve been looking for an answer and I can’t find any evidence one way or another - although we might believe that a country with more murders tends to have more multiple murders - but I don’t know.

I’m not trying to play a yeah but game with anybody - I could go on about how you seem unduly defensive about this topic, but that’s not my purpose - I pointed something out, you said that you had heard and read those arguments many times, so I thought that closes the subject. If you would like me to go on about something in which you said you already had heard the evidence and apparently have a strong opinion about, then I can, but what would be the point of that?

On the other hand, rather than “reflexively” wanting to change the subject, you said something (as in you were the one that raised the subject) that I found interesting and wanted to learn more about. You could have simply responded with a “I don’t know” - and that would be fine. Then maybe one of us could try to find an answer - then we’d both have learned something. Try it sometime.

When I was 12, I took up shooting. It was in a small eastern city. We went hunting and target shooting. I never liked hunting so much. Siting in a tree for hours bored me to death. But shooting at targets, I liked. Even putting soda bottles on top of a rock and see who shot it the best interested us the most. In those times, hunters had rifles and shotguns on the rear windows of pick-up trucks. There was no one who ever even stole any. It even was no problem with policemen. There was many times the police stopped by to check things out, and they ended up shooting with us. Using our guns, since they didn’t want to shoot there police equipped ones. They were local township police, the local small city police, and even state police. It was nothing unusual.
But making guns illegal will not stop any criminals from shooting people. Crimanls always buy illegal firearms. And if they make them illegal to own, private citizens may end up disarmed, but criminals will no be. To them, it will give them more ability to commit crimes.
How long have drugs been baned? How long have people gotten drugs illegally?

This is an interesting story.

Van Wyk is a survivor of one of South Africa’s most notorious criminal attacks.

He stresses, “Gun free zones are places where the law abiding citizens actually become sitting ducks. Where have we seen multiple shooting incidences around the world? We see them (mostly) in the schools in America that are gun free zones, and we see them in countries…where governments get out of control (and the citizens are unarmed).”

Compared to life in prison, the death penalty may not be a deterrent (there are studies that show conflicting results) but compared to a $5 fine?

OUr cousin remembers the days of riding the school bus to high school with his rifle for the shooting team practice after school. The kids all brought their rifles to the front office and leaned them up against the wall.

Anyone who would intentionally execute police officers has gone over to the dark side long before Obama was elected. For stable decent people our social contact with police recognizes them as authorities, and as protecting society against forces that would unravel it. If this call was for domestic violence he obviously had anti-social characteristics.

I think there’s clearly more to this story than what’s been reported so far.

Just from reading the AP report on the shooting, I noticed a couple of details that people seem to have gotten wrong in the discussion above:

Richard Poplawski, 23, met officers at the doorway and shot two of them in the head immediately, Harper said. An officer who tried to help the two also was killed.

If this is correct, it was basically an ambush. Two cops knocked on th door, he opened it, and shot them both in the head. It doesn’t specify what kind of weapon was used to kill the first two cops, but I would assume a handgun, given the way it seems to have gone down. You can’t open a door and bring an AK-47 to bear quickly enough to shoot 2 people standing that close to you in the amount of time he would have had.

Poplawski, armed with an assault rifle and two other guns, then held police at bay for four hours as the fallen officers were left bleeding nearby, their colleagues unable to reach them, according to police and witnesses. More than 100 rounds were fired by the SWAT teams and Poplawski, Harper said.

This is very different from the shooter himself having fired 100 rounds. If there was a full scale firefigt between him and the SWAT team, it makes a lot more sense than the way it was being portrayed above.

Back in the 70’s it was ok to have guns as long as it was to rebel against the establishment and “kill the pigs”. Now that the “rebels” are the establishment we can’t countenance such nonsense.

But today’s establishment is still not too concerned about the ‘pigs’ or they would not hamper them with so many rules as to when they can use weapons that the best of them will hesitate before firing while the gunman has no such compunction.

Why am I digging myself a hole? The hostility from this discussion has been remarkable.

I tried Googling it - thank you - my guess is that at least one other person here tried Googling it too and there was no answer forthcoming. Surprise, sometimes Google doesn’t yield an answer.

I don’t understand why my question would be perceived as not real. Do you know the answer? It seems that since there has been no answer that it was a pretty good question and it is pertinent to the discussion at hand.

Also, if you look at the thread - it is absolutely clear that he was stating that mass killing as a result of gun violence increased when guns were banned. His statement came after we “discussed” whether gun violence in general increased with gun bans.

659 PloniAlmoni  Sat, Apr 4, 2009 3:58:47pm

This disturbed me, and what also disturbed me were comments on right-wing websites like this one saying to the effect how wonderful it was: “This means REAL ‘mericans still have duh fightin’ spirit! Obama’s not gonna take ‘r guns away without a fight! Yee-haw!” We now see one of the fruits of stupid paranoia that justified my unease when I saw these stories.

And of course, the story wrapped up in those statistics is not the one the Michael Moores of the world want to tell.

I’m unclear on how his fearing a future gun ban would make him fire an AK-47 at police officers.

Serious mental illness sounds like a better explanation to me, and perhaps a discussion of how nuts like the VA Tech shooter and this guy can so easily purchase weapons might be in order…..but not one that throws mud on every person who is concerned about Obama’s stance on the 2nd Amendment.

Full disclosure—I would have happily voted for Rudy in a GOP primary and general election even though he isn’t any kind of anti-gun control purist.

Golly, yeah, good thing I live here in Washington DC, where we had incredibly strict gun laws since 1976 (until those evil Bush buddy SCOTUS guys overturned them this past summer), and that’s why we have no gun violence whatsoever here.

The 22-year-old suspected shooter, Richard “Pop” Poplawski, who told friends he was wearing a bulletproof vest, surrendered to police about 11 a.m., four hours after the standoff began at 1016 Fairfield St. He was shot several times in the legs and was being treated at UPMC Presbyterian.

City officials this afternoon identified the officers as Stephen Mayhle, a two-year veteran of the force, Eric Kelly, on the job for 14 years, and Paul Sciullo III, also a two-year veteran.

Police said Officer Mayhle was married and had two daughters, ages 3 and 6; Officer Kelly was married and had three daughters, ages 11, 16 and 22; and Officer Sciullo was single and engaged to be married.

Just like the drunk and drugged parolee who murdered a school crossing guard with his car and is currently being treated for head injuries. Dammit, quit treating vermin using my tax dollars.

It would remove the “excruciating pain” argument against capital punishment.

Thanks for the link, HbP. He wants to reinstate the assault-weapon ban, and impose tighter controls on gun dealers, institute a national database of fired-bullet spoor, and have better child-locks. None of these sound particularly odious to me. I also wouldn’t be surprised if none of them were implemented; he’s got bigger things to worry about.

The proposals seem like generic urban-Democrat platform boilerplate. I really do not see any reason to believe that he cares much about the issue beyond boilerplate and wonkery.

re: #707 Iron Fist

Are you aledging that Barack Obama isn’t a Democrat? Or that Congress
isn’t controlled by Democrats? Gun control has been on the Democrat’s agenda ever since Franklin Delano Roosevelt was a first-termer. Besides, Obama himself said that he wouldn’t go after the guns becaise he didn’t have the votes. This after his infamous comment (to what he thought was a friendly audience) about people bitterly clinging to their God and their guns.

And please define “undue” while you are at it. Obama swore an oath to uphold and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies foreign and domestic. That means defending the civil rights of all Americans, and the Supreme Court has now explicitly said that that right to keep and bear arms is an individual right.

When Obama starts taking on the members of his own party that are hostile to American’s right to keep and bear arms, as his oath of office requires of him, get back with me. I’ll be happy to admit that I was wrong about him. Untile he does, though, I’m going to take him at his word. If he has the votes, he will come for the guns. The real question is whether or not he has the votes. Right now the outlook in Congress looks decidedly mixed on the issue. But the Attourney General he appointed is known to be anti-civil rights ion this issue.

I’m hearing you say that the Democrats are inherently anti-gun, and have been for seventy years. The statement is just too broad to have any meaning.

If you were talking about, say, ‘75-‘85, roughly, I would agree that there was a large sector of the Democratic voting population which was anti-gun. And good reason, too, at least for emotional reasons: the urban centers were wracked with gun-based crime, and people thought they could do something about it, and that the solution was banning classes of weapons (like handguns) outright.

Over the intervening decades, however, the populace has gradually moved in the direction desired by gun advocates: guns don’t kill people, people do. They’ve also seen that the vast majority of gun-based crime is minority-on-minority, and have therefore cynically let the issue fade.

When I say “undue”, I mean: I don’t know how to define it, but I’ll know it when I see it.

Look, you too are in favor of weapons control. I would have to assume you don’t want any of these recent spate of cop-killing scumbags to drive an Abrams down the street. I myself am prudent, and do not wish to see private individuals owning fighter jets.

So the question is not absolute. There is a line somewhere, between “I don’t want anyone to have guns!” and “I have a sweet Abrams tank!”. Maybe most Americans would say that middle ground is…somewhere around assault weapon ownership.

Personally, I’ve never really cared about guns either way. My instinct is for the people to retain a strong measure of weaponry for defense against rogue government. But if people say, “we really need to have a national database for bullet spoor,” I might say, “Okay, persuade me.”

When you say that Obama doesn’t have the votes, I would say, a) he really doesn’t care about the issue as much as you think, and b) the votes really aren’t there, and that’s part of the point I made in my first post.

Thanks for responding.

712 Parker in US  Sat, Apr 4, 2009 7:52:02pm

The question you should be asking yourself is why does he want to do anything with guns at all? As you well know if you give the government an inch they will take a mile. It starts with assault weapons then they will go after handguns and so on and so on. You may not mind if your representatives wipe their asses with the constitution but some of us get a little pissed off about it.

Also just last week Hilary Clinton stood on the world stage and announced that 90% of the guns the drug cartels in Mexico were using come from the US therefore we must take responsibility for what is going on down there. In Democrat speak that means “We need to have more gun controls in the US”
Which by the way turned out to be a complete lie.

If more people would see through the BS propaganda that our government and the MSM puts out and actually do their homework there wouldn’t be so many naive people such as yourself in this country and maybe we could elect someone who has at least read the constitution!

“If you give the government an inch they will take a mile. It starts with assault weapons then they will go after handguns…”

Okay. I see what you’re saying. I just don’t buy the generic slippery-slope arguments for anything.

In that case, what would likely happen is that most Americans would say, “Hey, don’t criminals use assault weapons to kill cops? Maybe that’s a good law, then.”

If, thereafter, for some poorly considered reason (both politically and constitutionally) some Congressperson introduced a bill to seize all handguns, it would simply go nowhere. There is no political will for such, and I would most certainly oppose such a measure, as would most centrists.

Thanks for the link to the claim that only 17% of these guns actually originate from el Norte. I would actually have thought it would be less…wouldn’t it be cheaper to get them from, I dunno, Venezuela?

And I agree that it would be great if the masses would rise up and see through BS of all kinds — of all kinds. That includes calling those you disagree with Constitution-ignorant naifs. It’s just not helpful.
