Did They Launch or Didn’t They?

World • Views: 2,079

The world’s news services are stumbling over each other’s feet tonight.

The BBC says: North Korea ‘has launched rocket’.

But Reuters says: Japan red-faced over mistaken N.Korean rocket report.

We’ll find out who’s right shortly.

UPDATE at 4/4/09 8:16:31 pm:

Looks like they did: North Korea Defies Warnings, Launches Powerful Rocket.

TOKYO, April 5 — North Korea has launched a long-range missile, defying repeated international warnings, worrying its neighbors and setting itself up for increased sanctions.

The launch, from a base on the country’s northeast coast, came shortly after 10:30 p.m. EDT. North Korea said the “peaceful” launch would put a communications satellite into orbit, but the United States, Japan and South Korea described it as a provocative test of a ballistic missile that could fly as far as the western United States.

As it expands its formidable arsenal of rockets, North Korea is also trying to make nuclear warheads small enough to fit atop medium- and long-range ballistic missiles, U.S. intelligence officials said.

President Obama said Friday that the launch would “put enormous strains” on multi-nation negotiations with North Korea to abandon nuclear weapons. He added that the United States will “take appropriate steps to let North Korea know that it can’t threaten the safety and security of other countries with impunity.”

Japan was talking tough earlier. And that's a good thing, imo, because as with iran, our allies might have to deal with these threats and not rely on a wussy American president to get the thugs in line.

Taking into account that North Korea did claim it would launch a rocket about this time, I'd be inclined to believe the launch reports. However, that's always subject to change as for information is known.

The Japanese don't have many options... or at least, fewer than some of them would like to indicate by bluster.

Be careful of taking everything the Japanese say about his incident as similar to the concerns that the US might have about this situation. There is quite a bit of purely Korean-Japanese animosity wrapped up into this that isn't our direct concern.

After all, our concerns are about NK exporting both nuclear and rocket technology or devices to other unsavory countries, as much as NK threatening SK or Japan.

Yes. The reports from State are coming about 5 minutes ago. Nothing at their website.

Associated Press - April 4, 2009 11:13 PM ET

WASHINGTON (AP) - The State Department says that North Korea has launched a rocket, following through on its promise of a launch despite international criticism.

Let's see here. In the late nineties, the Clinton Adminstration, and the Dems, were telling us of the danger Saddam posed. In recent weeks the Obama Administration, along with Europe, have told us of the danger Iran's nuke program poses and warned North Korea not to test fire its rocket. Yet, Bush was ridiculed and chastised for lumping these three as an axis of evil.
(Perhaps some think "these three" are the Clinton Administration, the Obama Administration, and the Euros.)

How's things in your little corner of the world?

And a good evening to you! How did you guess I was cornered? NY Grampa is taking every single dish out of the cabinets, and they are surrounding me on the floor and coffee table. As we are kosher, we have 2 sets of everything; dishes, pots, pans, silverware, cooking things, pot holders, dish towels, coffee maker...name it! They are going to be packed in cartons, and the youngest son is coming in the AM to help. Once the regular things are put in the storeroom, the Passover stuff comes upstairs....and the new shelving paper is on the shelves, extra heavy aluminum foil imported from Israel is on the countertops and stove, etc., and the frig will be ready to put liners in. And the oven has been cleaned and will be ready for Tuesday and Wednesday when the cooking gets done.

And there is probably stuff I forgot to metion, like all the foods are out of the cabinets and off the shelves, which will be lined tomorrow, and the pasover dry products will be put on.

I am short, and really do not do well trying to get stuff out of the cabinets. My 2 little granddaughters, ages 6 and 8 always measure themselves against me, and smirk! I am about 4'11 now. The 2 1/2 year old grandson could care less how tall I am...for now.

So, what's new with you? ;)

222 Teh Flowah  Sat, Apr 4, 2009 9:06:02pm

To be honest, I don't perceive Radical Islam OR North Korea as a significant threat to the United State's way of life. They are more a threat to the regions they originate from. Juche Socialism hurts North Koreans, Radical Islam hurts the Middle East. If the Western World is hurt by these ideologies, it is only in relatively small ways. Sure, 9/11 was horrific, but in the grand scheme of things, the casualities were quite low. And it was really a once in a lifetime type of event.

Unlike Japan in WW2, these two groups have no real warmaking capabilities that the United States should be frightened of.

My presence on this site and support for certain US actions in Iraq and Afghanistan come from my hatred for backwards ideologies that crush the souls of their respective peoples.

So when I see people going crazy about North Korea being able to hit Alaska or Hawaii... it's a little strange. Do they really think North Korea would do something so catastrophically stupid? Kim Jong Il might be a little strange but he's not stupid. Observe his actions through the lens of him trying to stay in power and he's a political genius. He knows how much to push to get what he wants. And he always gets it AND he's still in power. He knows that attacking another country outright will result in him being absolutely shitfucked.

I wish you lived in the metro NY area, and could come to one of the 2 Seders.

Here is a traditional Seder plate It can be clicked on and explain what each symbol represents. Passover in, from what I understand, the most observed of the Jewish holidays. And yes, it really is very familial...our kids are split this year. My daughter, son in law and the grandson, and my second son, his wife and the 8 year old and the youngest son will be here Wednesday night for the first Seder, and my oldest son, daughter in law and the 6 year old and our youngest will be here for the second one, on Thursday night. I can't believe how fast the little ones are growing! The 2 1/2 year old is practicing the Four Questions, as he goes to a Chabad Gan (nursery school), and the 8 year old will help out.

Uh, you wished me a merry Christmas 8 months early! ;) 'Chag Pesach Sameach' is the transliteration for 'Happy Pesach'.

/Wanna come and help me get ready?

And since the Seder plate I posted is not working quite right, here is more info:

News Flash:

President Obama said Saturday that the launch would “put enormous strains” on his ability to come up with new ways to appear weaker than he has already, apologize further for the USA's existence, and offer concessions to North Korea when he is already busy spending vast amounts of money on the Palestinians, and pork and socialist projects at home. He added that the United States will “take appropriate steps to let North Korea know that it can threaten the safety and security of other countries with impunity” so the North Koreans will know they don't have to launch any more ICBMs. Obama said that to show good faith, he has "ordered all of the USA's nuclear weapons to be shot into the Sun, and all funding for Overseas Contingency Operations to be cut off." Obama made it clear that "now that we know for sure North Korea has a viable delivery system for it's nuclear weapons, the USA will do what ever North Korea's dear leader wants us to."

I watched, I learned. :-) Thank you.

My best friend from high school dated like a mad woman in New Orleans for 20 years. When she finally announced she would marry in her late thirties we were all shocked (we knew she would never "settle down".) To my amazement, he was a devout Jew. (She was raised Catholic, not so surprising the choice, what was surprising was to come.) She undertook formal instruction in Judaism for quite a long time before they were wedded, converted, and I remember a visit to her home shortly after the wedding. The change was astonishing to me. There were cherished family memorabilia from his family everywhere .... a sense of deep reverence, tradition, and history. The change in her was astounding to me. She spoke for hours of the Jewish traditions, explained the stories behind the pictures, the heirloom pieces here and there ....it was marvelous.

This was my first exposure to Judaism. She has since moved to the Northeast, but that visit really opened my eyes. Being here at LGF has taken that fledgling knowledge and understanding to a much deeper level.

Thanks, Nana.

The ban failed almost immediately, thanks to an effort led by local chefs who said they would willingly go to jail before they gave up their foie gras.

There is a larger effort underway to have it banned, led by PETA; they figured it was low-hanging fruit, with very few fans and the force-feeding thing making banishment easy. As usual, they miscalculated; the nation's foodie contingent is quite large and powerful at the moment, and when you have people on TV like Anthony Bourdain and Bobby Flay waxing rhapsodic over the charms of foie gras, it's here to stay.

In generaly, I agree. Except it looks like Kimmy may be dead or seriously disabled; no one's seen him in many, many months.

But his policies continue. This launch is, as you suggest, provocative rather than an overt threat. The goal is to shake more money out of the US and Japan than it has already received by threatening to dismantle the latest agreement all parties have reached and are so loathe to abandon. After a few weeks of rhetoric, NK will be back at the bargaining table with their palm out, waiting for more grease. And we'll most likely happily oblige.

There isn't much we can do. NK is already heavily sanctioned, so there's not much else we can choke off that they aren't already doing without. And hopes of fomenting an internal coup of any sort are extremely slim.

One interesting approach might be for Obama (or some actual leader) to demand a face-to-face meeting with Kimmy. I'm pretty certain he's beyond conversation, and the exposure that Pumpkin Boy has ascended to Heavenly Bliss behind his people's back might be enough to kick-start real reform. Or maybe just make things worse, although it's hard to imagine how that could ever happen.

A sad visual indicator of North Korea's economic mire.

Frankly, I've always thought that North Korea was a problem for China to deal with. China could put NK out of business tomorrow with one simple, passive act: opening it's border with NK. Within days, most of the country's population will have poured into China, looking for food and work that they can't find at home, and the country would simply cease to function as a semi-sovereign state.

China is reluctant to do this because the inevitable outcome would be reunification, with South Korea taking the reins. And China doesn't want a US ally on it's border, especially an ally like the US that has mutual defense treaties firmly in place.

At the end of the day, though, China is the one who should be calling the shots here. They are also the only thing left propping up NK economically, so they are in a position to bring their government down in a slower, more painful fashion through the expedient of starving their population to death when aid is shut off.

An overt, explicit replacement of Kimmy with someone of China's choosing would be another option.

Assuming Kimmy's still alive to replace. Somehow, I doubt it.

This is 'lil Kim's way of screaming "look at me! Look at me!"

In general, I agree. But giving in over and over and over again is not a good pattern, and the US along with it's partners in this matter have made that mistake many times, reinforcing this sort of behavior.

It would be nice to see a definitive "No!" from our side. The problem is: what can you withhold from a nation whose populace is already amongst the most deprived on the planet? In other words: what can the US, China and Japan do, apart from imposing more meaningless sanctions, that will apply any real leverage to the problem?

China is the key here. They want to become a world power; encourage them to take a leadership role in resolving this crisis. As noted above, all they have to do is open their border. Or declare that NK is in violation of their latest agreement, and announce that they're sending the Army in to confiscate NK's nuclear resources.

Having the US take on the role of aggressor, in this case, is not a good option.

re: #246 SixDegrees

I have spoken with Chinese generals about this subject in Shenyang. They routinely return defecting NK army officers back home to certain death. They say that China does not want a destabilized North Korea for fear that China would actually have to absorb NK and deal with the problems there. hen I asked whether SK could do that, they doubted SK's ability to do so.

The Chinese have an almost paternal view of the Koreans, North and South. They view them as "their little cousins", a phrase that rankles the Koreans I know.

What I find interesting is that Obama appears to want to control our banks, but not want to control North Korean missile launches. Is something backwards here?

But the U.S. military said "no object entered orbit." 253 Kenneth  Sun, Apr 5, 2009 7:09:02am
Four hours after the launch, North Korea declared it a success. An experimental communications satellite reached outer space in just over nine minutes and was orbiting Earth, the state-run Korean Central News Agency said from Pyongyang.

"The satellite is transmitting the melodies of the immortal revolutionary paeans 'Song of Gen. Kim Il Sung' and 'Song of Gen. Kim Jong Il' as well as measurement data back to Earth," it said, referring to the country's late founder and his son, its current leader.

But South Korea's defense minister and the U.S. military disputed that account. North American Aerospace Defense Command and U.S. Northern Command officials said in a statement that the first stage of the rocket fell into the waters between Korea and Japan, while the two other stages, and its payload, landed in the Pacific Ocean.

No satellite was deployed, if there ever was a satellite in the payload. A small country like North Korea hardly needs a communications satellite anyway, and there was no way this missile was going to be capable of putting a satellite into geo-synchronous orbit, which is where a communications satellite would operate. Therefore, there never was a satellite on that rocket.
