Lizard Lounge Closes

Open • Views: 8,125

I’ve become aware that there is a contingent of disgruntled LGF readers who have been using the Lizard Lounge — that I’ve been paying for, for the past three years — to trash and insult LGF and myself. As of right now, the Lounge is closed until further notice.

A shame. The Lounge was a fun place.

3 Macker  Sat, Apr 4, 2009 8:34:30pm

That sucks. It was a great place to go to to get away from the threads.

Sad to hear that, but I do fully understand the reasons why.

What's a lounge?

7 Racer X  Sat, Apr 4, 2009 8:35:42pm

re: #6 Fat Bastard Vegetarian

What's a lounge?

Ironically enough, it a group of lizards.

9 CyanSnowHawk  Sat, Apr 4, 2009 8:36:04pm

I used to pop in occasionally, but haven't been there in months. Didn't see any of that crap myself, but that's a pretty F'ed up thing to do in someone's house.

10 Jewels (AKA Julian)  Sat, Apr 4, 2009 8:36:31pm

Same here.

11 Honorary Yooper  Sat, Apr 4, 2009 8:37:16pm

My advice, ban the jerks.

12 jaunte  Sat, Apr 4, 2009 8:37:31pm

No sense paying for a spot for ingrates to complain; they'll do it anywhere.

13 Fat Bastard Vegetarian  Sat, Apr 4, 2009 8:37:52pm

re: #8 Sharmuta

What's a "lizard lounge" other than a group of lizards? Really. Never been in it.

14 Gus  Sat, Apr 4, 2009 8:38:44pm

Went there once. Frankly, I saw this coming. Seemed like the 5th Column was held up in there. Never went back.

15 Charles Johnson  Sat, Apr 4, 2009 8:38:46pm

Apparently there was some kind of loophole that let banned users get into the lounge. I don't have the time or the inclination to debug it, so I'm closing the whole thing down and canceling my parachat account. I don't need this headache.

16 CyanSnowHawk  Sat, Apr 4, 2009 8:39:05pm

I'll bet they're busy setting up a stalker chatroom somewhere.

What's a "lizard lounge" other than a group of lizards? Really. Never been in it.

If you clicked on the cute lizard with a drink in his hand that used to be in the upper right you would go to a text chat room.

18 Sharmuta  Sat, Apr 4, 2009 8:39:13pm

Pretty ill mannered to insult your host in his house when you think he's not looking. Cowardly too, frankly.

19 eastvillageinfidel  Sat, Apr 4, 2009 8:39:26pm

I only went to the lounge twice. It moved so fast it made me nervous. I saw people there I never saw post on the threads. It was like a secret clubhouse.

20 docremulac  Sat, Apr 4, 2009 8:39:36pm

Just ban the fuckers. This blog is your house, you can kick anybody out for any reason you want including being dicks to the host. I didn't use it much but some people liked it. Seems a shame that a couple of assholes would ruin it for the rest.

But I guess I should take my own advice, this is your place so if you want to close it's certainly your call.

Can you put the rad lizard art back up though? No reason he should be punished.

21 pink freud  Sat, Apr 4, 2009 8:40:07pm

I popped in twice, ever. The threads are known as the "elephant graveyard".
The dialogue left ...umm ...lots to be desired.

22 Fat Bastard Vegetarian  Sat, Apr 4, 2009 8:40:15pm

What the hell do people say in the lounge that they won't say out here? Out here can be pretty, uh..., well... is "lively" a good word?

23 HelloDare  Sat, Apr 4, 2009 8:40:25pm

I was in there once. It smelled of stale beer and cigarettes so I left.

24 Sharmuta  Sat, Apr 4, 2009 8:40:43pm

I will miss Iggy.

25 docremulac  Sat, Apr 4, 2009 8:40:49pm

Oh, your post explains why banning isn't an option. Never mind.

But do consider bringing the cool lizard back.

The thing is KT, you have grace and class. Most of the people banned have neither.

47 DistantThunder  Sat, Apr 4, 2009 8:48:40pm

I used to hang out there quite a bit, and then in the last few months since the election hardly at all. It's been several weeks since my last visit. I loved talking to Birk about all his diving experiences, especially with the Great White sharks.

I'll bet they're busy setting up a stalker chatroom somewhere.

They set up that chatroom a couple nights ago, after what they're calling "The Night Of The Vaccine Needles". I was in that chatroom last night. It was mostly a Sharmuta slamfest I'm sorry to say.

I didn't keep a log, and I'm not giving out names (here or in private). It was nice to see old lizards that I'd known when I first got an account here. At first. Then it just got sad, to see the level of anger and spite among some of them (not all of them, but the vocal ones).

I did say in the chatroom that I would probably get banned from both this site and that other site. That other site can feel free to take this message as my "meltdown post" and block my IP.

51 Fat Bastard Vegetarian  Sat, Apr 4, 2009 8:49:18pm

5 children, father found dead

Pierce County Sheriff's investigators say five children between 7 and 16 years old have been found dead in a Graham area home and they may have been killed by their father with a rifle.

The dead children were identified as four girls and a 7-year-old boy.

Deputies were called to check on the welfare of the children at a mobile home park after the father's body was discovered in King County. The father, 35, had apparently killed himself with the same rifle, investigators told The News Tribune of Tacoma.

Funny, I've spent about as much time in there as anyone currently present, and I've tried to admonish the odd individual who has been disrespectful, but, honestly, it has been pretty quiet in there when I have been in. That has typically been between 11 P.M. and 3 A.M., Pacific time. Maybe the real bad mudslinging occurred earlier in the evenings.

Pain. The emotional pain builds to the point that they want relief. Just the thought of the pending "relief" makes the upbeat. But killing kids is very nihilistic.

LGF is already sooo fast, it is like a chat room already, no need for a separate lounge, you can say anything you want on these threads, OT on T, whatever, it is so fast, hard to keep up. And if it is abused go close it, no need to have a community within the community.........

Gentlemen/women:

I was a frequenter of the Lizard Lounge. Throughout all my time in the chat, which was most evenings, I had some of the best online conversations of my life. From arguing with about Mecca to holding a "civilized discourse" with from the Daily Kos, the folks in the Lounge always acted in a dignified manner. I am disappointed to see the Lounge close down, mais c'est la vie, et la vie continue! I wish good luck to all of my fellow loungers in their respective lives, particularly whose husband just returned from Iraq. It was great while it lasted, and it goes without saying that I think it ought to be reopened as soon as possible. However, I recognize that Charles pays for the service and as such, it is very much within his right to shut it down.

That has typically been between 11 P.M. and 3 A.M., Pacific time. Maybe the real bad mudslinging occurred earlier in the evenings.

Yeah, I hadn't seen anything going on there, but like you, those are the hours I was in there...

Obama has talked the economy down and not given any hope to the average person. Jobless rate is headed higher. People are starting to feel hopeless.

Exactly. Hopeless on many levels. Society and our economic structure is crumbling. The most profound and far-reaching effect (after one 70+ days) is a deep sense of loss of stability.

The kind of people who would put out their cigarettes on your rug. Good riddance.

Actually, in my experience, only a small proportion of Lounge regulars were ever flat-out disrespectful, at least during times I was in there. It did provide a place to chat about off-topic or personal stuff, reminiscences, whatever, and it moved waay faster than the threads do, when it was busy.

I will never poop on any parades. The lounge is what kept me here vocally. I read every day and I follow threads, but I love the give and take of people chatting real time. It's a shame it's going, but if it has to go for any reason, who are we to judge? I will miss all of the friends I met there and I'll still keep popping up in threads with my opinions. It really is too bad it came to this, but I hope that we can find a place that doesn't cost Charles more money to continue the banter.

re: #22 Fat Bastard Vegetarian

What the hell do people say in the lounge that they won't say out here? Out here can be pretty, uh..., well... is "lively" a good word?

1. The sort of things right wingers might spout off about in conversation at a bar that shouldn't get posted in a thread. The sort of things I would say myself, and have in fact said in the Lounge. I view this as harmless blowing-off-steam; leftist spies might not, but I'm not concerned with that here...

2. Kvetches about how they couldn't give their opinion about creationism, or anti-jihad bloggers, because of our "intellectual bully" host and the gang of suckers-up. That, I took as a personal slam; because I'm often on the same list of updingers and downdingers as the people they don't like. (Is it still sucking up if I genuinely agree with the sentiment?)

3. Links to stuff which wouldn't fly here (references to the likes of Pat Dollard - so, now you know the backstory to why I posted this). That's more serious IMO; that's where I got the feeling of being fed propaganda by a political cult.

The democrats will spend a lot of time casting blame at the right and coming up with "solutions" that make the problem worse.

The jobless rate will increase and rural areas will be hard hit because most stimulus funds will be going to cities (where Obama voters reside). My business is doing okay but a lot of others are hanging on by their fingernails. My Veterinarian mentioned last night that they've never had so much out in receivables. People are bringing their pets in knowing they can't pay and neglecting to mention that before they're treated. Fascinating, eh! Trolling must be a boring endeavor, truly one fit for those soulless and brain-dead zombies! Maybe we need to keep a supply of garlic and sharpened stakes nearby, or does that only work on vampires? Or, maybe zombies are only vampires with a different point view!

I'm kind of partial to our resident zombie. :)

White House says nuclear-free world achievable

President Barack Obama's vision of a world without nuclear arms is an achievable goal and the president will pursue it with an eye on the lessons learned from four decades of difficult diplomacy, the White House said Saturday.

The comments by Denis McDonough, deputy national security adviser for strategic communications, came aboard Air Force One on the eve of the president's speech in Prague on nonproliferation.

The whole world's laughing.

That is mostly what I used the Lounge for. I got so caught up with the main threads that I have not been to the lounge in weeks.

I'm going to miss the Lounge. When I was slowly recovering from a near-fatal attack of diverticulitis, the Lounge Lizards lifted my spirits and helped me to perdure. However, there was an undercurrent of dissatisfaction with the threads that had a nasty habit of boiling over there. Both Lounge Lizards and Thread Lizards considered themselves to be Lizards, but, like the Soldiers and Sailors who are both members of the Armed Forces, there has been a tendency on each side to look down upon the other. Also, I think that some folks who disagreed with certain pet idiotarianisms of theirs being focused upon in the threads but lacked the ability to logically or factually defend them there resorted to going into the Lounge to vent their displeasure.

I noticed these things, personally deplored them, and even spoke up about them in the Lounge upon occasion, but I never ratted anybody out to anyone. I just wanted to make that clear to any Lounge Lizards who might read this thread. It saddens me immensely that we have lost a cherished (by me) chat resource just because some disgruntled folks could not restrain themselves from engaging in the sort of slanderous ranting there that would never be tolerated on the threads.

I'm kind of a boxing buff (my daddy was a boxer). This was back way before our time - and under the London Prize Ring rules, in contrast with the Marquess of Queensberry rules, still pretty much in use today.

Under the old rules (per Wiki), "a round ended with a man downed by punch or throw, whereupon he was given 30 seconds to rest and eight additional seconds to "come to scratch" or return to the centre of the ring where a "scratch line" was drawn and square off with his opponent once more. Consequently, there were no round limits to fights."

Good evening my friend..Besides the nice shy lizards in the lounge.. I used it to talk trash to a few lizards that pissed me off.. The only time I ever got angry is when somebody just trashed a lizard for no real reason..Just mean ass shit..And I would go..You all want to step into the lounge for a minute?

Well, if teh One is going to dismantle the U.S. nuclear umbrella, under which we Canadians have sheltered (by treaty yet!), maybe it's time for we Canucks to start refining some of that vast supply of uranium we're sitting on, and build our own deterrent.

Don't make the mistake of thinking we'd be unable to do it.

Hey DT, I'm sure you're right about that, but since Charles said he killed the lounge because a contingent of disgruntled LGF readers who have been using the Lizard Lounge to trash and insult LGF and myself it must have been pretty bad at times. Otherwise he'd a kept it open, no?

Well, RW, during the times I was in there, it was not nearly as bad as you imagine. I know of at least two lounge regulars who had been banned out here, and got into the Lounge by using sock puppets, but they both behaved themselves, and pointedly did not dump on Charles. They just liked the company in there.

What went on when I wasn't there, I can't speak to. But if you have it in your mind that the place was a non-stop "insult-the-host" fest, you are sadly mistaken.

Keep in mind that the Marquess of Queensberry rules were written in 1865. However, there was still plenty of bare-knuckle boxing under the old rules, even after they were illegal bouts. Fights ended when one of the men couldn't come up to scratch, or when the police raided the joint.

Some funny lines in this UN presser about Gaza..

“We need access; it’s the number one issue, it’s the number two issue, it’s the number three issue,” said John Ging at a Headquarters press conference this afternoon.

He emphasized, however, that it was not enough to be content with ensuring the survival of Gaza’s people. Beyond keeping them alive, it was important to give them a life and a reason to live.

He stressed that neither side should be allowed to claim that the illegal acts of the other legalized an illegal act in response.

In response to a question on inquiries to Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon by the United States House Committee on Foreign Affairs about UNRWA’s use of the Commercial Bank of Syria, which was on a United States money laundering list, he said decisions about UNRWA’s banking relations were above his pay grade.

To a question about the psychological services UNRWA provided to the people of Gaza, he said its psychosocial programmes were large and growing larger,

I'm sorry for those of you who used it well, but not really that sorry for those who abused it.

I'm upset it had to come to this. I liked the Lounge. I used the Lounge. I recommended the Lounge just a few days ago.

I was concerned about the abusers. I thought it was uncool that people would use it to bitch about the threads when they were using Charles's system. I was wondering if one day Charles would be legally required to install monitors in the Lounge to keep logs, to document what the abusers might say; in case there was a LGF-related IRL meltdown, like we saw today with that cop killer (who I hope wasn't a regular here).

Maybe I should have complained. I don't know. In the meantime I did try to engage them in debate; some perhaps responded, but the real abusers weren't there to debate, they were there to advertise extremist sites and to undermine LGF. What debate can there be? I just hoped enough of the abusers would screw up and get the stick before it came to this.

I'm sure the majority of lizards in the lounge were nice folks, but I don't think Charles was talking about the kind of situation you're describing; apparently there were some lizards in there who - if they posted out here at all, were not insulting or uncomplimentary to Charles and LGF but when they got into the lounge they turned on him and LGF. Although I still don't know how someone could get into the lounge without logging on to LGF and,as I said, Charles is damn good at stopping banned lizards from logging in. Much different from your asking a pain in the ass lizard out here to "step into the lounge" to have a "chat" with them!

Zimriel, what hours of the day were you in there? Sounds like you and me are describing two totally different populations of Lounge Lizards.

I'm focusing on the worst 5%, because they worried me, and they're the guys I ended up with last night so they're freshest in my memory. You're talking about the remaining 95% and you probably just scrolled past the rest, or coincidentally chose "bad parts" of the convo to head off and take a dump or something. (Which is what I did.)

Huh. Thank you Catttt! The things you learn on LGF!
Do you by any chance remember when those rules were changed to today's rules?

The M of Q rules were published in 1867, and fights under both old and new rules continued for a time. However, the new rules legitamized the sport. Under the old rules, there was really no governing body, and it was, of course, always illegal (but supported by rich men with power).

The first boxing, as opposed to fist prize fighting, championship was in 1892, when Gentleman Jim Corbett defeated John L. Sullivan in New Orleans.

Hey Hoops.

I'm surprised..If anyone talked trash in here or the lizard lounge I would be right on it..There has always got to be some asshole that ruins it for everybody....Dang that pisses me off.

Nope Alberta Oil Peon, that's not what I thought at all, especially after a number of nice folks out here said they used to use the lounge regularly - just that there were enough of the bad folks, enough times, for Charles to shut it down.

Obama: North Korea must avoid more provocative acts

U.S. President Barack Obama called on Sunday for North Korea to refrain from further "provocative actions" and said its launch of a Taepodong-2 missile violated United Nations rules.

"With this provocative act, North Korea has ignored its international obligations, rejected unequivocal calls for restraint, and further isolated itself from the community of nations," Obama said in a statement released from Prague, where he is traveling.

Why should our politicians be any different? Why do we need them to have experience, wisdom, or skilz (diplomatic skilz, leadership skilz, chess skilz) anymore? An image is all they need, right? If tomorrow all nuclear weapons vanished from all the arsenals all over the world, the dominant strategy for any military would be to acquire nuclear weapons. The Nash equilibrium in such a game is for everyone to acquire nukes.

Game theory is beautiful.

The dominant strategy would be for the U.S. to reacquire nukes faster than anyone else, meanwhile shredding with cruise missiles and bombers any facility anywhere that might beat us to the punch. Then finish off the world and re-people it with Americans.

Atrocious, but game theory does not include morality in strategy. It could probably be done and there wouldn't be much anybody could do about it.

The world would be insane to put that kind of temptation before angels, let alone nations of mortals such as the U.S.

I only wandered into the Lounge once and it was very agreeable. I didn't stay long because I had actually accidentally wandered in there and didn't have a clue as to what everyone was talking about. Everyone greeted me. It would have been lovely if I'd had time to hang.

That said, I can see how it would be easy to turn such a place into a slam fest from time to time. Not the regs, of course. But there are a lot of bitters out there and they are fairly obsessed. No Miss Congeniality awards for them. >:(

Yes; we always pay the price of acting weak early.

We need the "America F*ck Yeah!" party, with John Bolton as President.

Works for me!

We cannot escape our destiny, nor should we try to do so. The leadership of the free world was thrust upon us two centuries ago in that little hall of Philadelphia. In the days following World War II, when the economic strength and power of America was all that stood between the world and the return to the dark ages, Pope Pius XII said, "The American people have a great genius for splendid and unselfish actions. Into the hands of America God has placed the destinies of an afflicted mankind."

We are indeed, and we are today, the last best hope of man on earth.

Lighten up, Francis. That bill ain't getting out of committee. It's a big con from the CBC, a nothingburger, a pander to their base. It's like a resolution which says "God bless America, The Flag, and Apple Pie".

By all means call the CBC a bunch of irresponsible bigots for supporting this crap. And Obama's agenda is bad enough. But don't please confuse this joke of a bill with that agenda.

The Pope’s Alaskan Bear Hunt

The Pope went on vacation for a few days to visit the rugged mountains of Alaska. He was cruising along the campground in the Pope Mobile when he heard a frantic commotion just at the edge of the woods. He found a helpless Democrat wearing wearing shorts, sandals, a Vote for Obama hat and a Save the Trees shirt. The man was screaming and struggling frantically, thrashing all about and trying to free himself from the grasp of a 10-foot grizzly bear.

As the Pope watched in horror, a group of Republican loggers wearing Go Sarah shirts came racing up. One quickly fired a 44 magnum slug right into the bear’s chest. The two other men pulled the semiconscious Democrat from the bear’s grasp. Then using baseball bats, the three loggers finished off the bear. Two of the men dragged the dead grizzly onto the bed of their pickup truck while the other tenderly placed the injured Democrat in the back seat.

As they began to leave, the Pope summoned al of them men over to him. “I give you my blessing for your brave actions!” he proudly proclaimed. “I have heard there was bitter hatred between Republican loggers and Democratic environmental activists, but now I’ve seen with my own eyes that this is not true.”

As the Pope drove off, one logger asked his buddies, “Who the heck was that guy?”

“Dude, that was was the Pope,” another replied. “He’s in direct contact with Heaven and has access to all wisdom.”

“Well,” the logger said, “he may have access to all wisdom, but he doesn’t know squat about bear hunting! By the way, is the bait still alive or do we need to go back to Massachusetts and get another one?”

Actual Alaskan Bear Hunt.

Guy from the lower 48 goes out in the Bush with a seasoned guide and Bear Hunter. Sitting around camp the first night the newbie pulls out his 44 Mag pistol and starts cleaning it. What do you have that thing for, the guide asked. Why to shoot a bear if it gets close. Tell you what, says the guide, if I were you I'd file off the front sight. What on earth for? says the guy.

So's it won't hurt so bad when the bear stuffs it up you ass.

Much longer story published in Alaska Magazine many years ago ... a significant number of Alaskans cancelled their subscriptions over the use of the word ass.

Ahhhhh - Marciano was truly awesome.

When I was a kid I'd go to the YMCA in Rocky's hometown for Saturday morning swim. Rocky was usually there swimming laps. In those days swim trunks were considered hazardous so everyone skinny dipped in the pool so I can always say I've gone skinny dipping with Rocky Marciano. Rocky always had time for us kids, signed every autograph request. He'd then go up to the gym and put on a heck of a show on the punching bags. We lost a great American Hero when he passed.

I know I'm coming late to this thread and haven't read all the posts, but just responding to Charles' 'disgruntled lizards' comment...I don't get it. I mean, we're all disgruntled, right? But isn't that why we come HERE, to be disgruntled WITH each other, not AT each other? I mean, who would use the lounge, an excellent, value added service that Charles does not HAVE to provide, to rag on the very site that keeps us all sane and in harmony? Who DOES that?

I'm sorry, Charles - I know you put your heart and soul into this site, and I visit as often as I can, just to keep my wits about me and share with other lizards, and it breaks my heart when I hear someone's deliberately taking advantage of your kindness. It really does only take a few bad apples, I guess.....

And, here your are, leaving us. Have a great weekend.(martooni's). LOL

I waited up for you. ;) Wanna come here and help me get ready for Wednesday night, and the First Seder?

Have a great weekend, too!

I am so happy that I have the menus all done, and will start cooking for real on Monday.

G'night again! I am aiming for a 3 AM touchdown....on my pillow! I really am tired, but LGF is too much fun.

Olives in the martoonis? Hic!

May the Queen put her arm around Michelle to push her away.

I'll miss the lounge. I made some good friends there. I never experienced any bashing, but I am in the middle of the Pacific and am many hours behind. Not sure how often I will post, but it's nice to see a lot of the lounge folks out here.

Always a sweet relief when the revelation hits that you have no obligation to subsidize those who would insult or take advantage of you.

May you have peace, Charles.

560 notutopia  Sun, Apr 5, 2009 4:14:33am

Pretty cheapskating to piss and moan about the proprietor of the lounge that they never had to pay front door
entrance fees for it's enjoyment.
Their irresponsibility really angers me, that they abused their priviledges and welcome and now everyone suffers due to the loss of the lounge.
"The Lizard Lounge" has been both an LGF icon in the blogosphere and a place for LGF'ers to go to carry on more personal contacts. Like a real lounge.
I just know the shitheads are smiling about this closure.
SHITHEADS!

Dear God.......

Sadly, things like this aren't altogether rare. There are two new things at work recently. One, of course, is the economy; for some, the loss of a job or wealth is enough to push their underlying instability right over the edge. Second, I think, is a newfound penchant for the press to "go national" with such stories, in hopes of whipping up an anti-gun frenzy. There have been a couple of incidents similar to this in our state over the last two or three years; as horrible as they were, I didn't see a word about them in the national press. Now, there seems to be a coordinated effort to give each and every such incident as much national exposure as possible.

Let Them Hit the Road
(To the tune of One for My Baby,
with apologies to Robbie Williams)

It’s quarter to three; there’s no one in the Lounge
To trash “LFG.”
You shut ’em down, C; it isn’t right to sanction
Such discourtesy.
I’m writing, my friend, of the end
Of the Lounge episode.
Lock it up, turn the lights out,
And let them hit the road.

I know it’s a shame; the blog without the Lounge,
It just ain’t the same.
But bolt all the doors; you shouldn’t have to suffer
Such ill-mannered boors.
To host whining sots – this is not
In a gentleman’s code.
Lock it up, turn the lights out,
And let them hit the road.

You’d never know it, but buddy I’m a kind of poet,
And there's something that I feel compelled to say:
If they're derisive, best be decisive;
Send them on their way.

Well that’s how it goes, so Charles, it’s just too bad
The Lounge has to close.
You gave it a try, and for your time and trouble,
They spit in your eye.
So take it no more; shut the door
Of the ingrates’ abode.
Lock it up, turn the lights out,
And let them hit the road.

563 Emerald  Sun, Apr 5, 2009 5:32:55am

Wow, I never even knew the lounge existed. I don't know if I'd have ever used it, except to find out who the cowardly pieces of shit were who went in there to moan and bitch. It's nice to have an idea who isn't worth bothering with.

564 Jason86  Sun, Apr 5, 2009 6:21:09am

I was definitely a lounge lizard. The threads never interested me, so I would chat in the lounge. The lizards were cool. I don't remember anything worthy of this kind of action being said in the lounge. There may have been a feeling among some lizards that there wasn't enough freedom in the threads but it was always expressed with respect. I remember the last time I was in there somebody said they weren't happy about some lizards getting banned, but that's it. This is a very sad development. :(

565 boofar  Sun, Apr 5, 2009 6:34:57am

573 Pass The Moonbaticide  Sun, Apr 5, 2009 8:39:41am

Aw, charles, sometimes the Lounge is useful for passing personal info, etc. that is not permitted on thread comments.

Couldn't you just make it clear to users that Monitor Lizards were , well, Monitoring, and that miscreants would be deal with appropriately as though their comments were posted on threads ?

Also, would it be possible to allow Registered Lizards to read deleted comments - perhaps after agreeing to a disclaimer about content - as occasionally it would have been useful to know what has initiated something flameworthy ?

If No to both, that's fine by me. Just a thought.

When I was in tech support back in the 80s, I had a banner in my cubicle that read, "Keep the customers gruntled!" It got a good many comments -- and questions -- from my co-workers until I explained it to them.

575 Heartland_Patriot  Sun, Apr 5, 2009 8:54:12am

As a frequent visitor to the lounge, I find this action unjustified. I've never witnessed anyone doing what has been alleged, and Charles appears to have many avid supporters to take on those that would bash him in the event that it ever does. It was a nice oasis of conservative thought and exchange that readily expelled the loony lefties that infest most other open forums. Perhaps Charles, your wrath is better directed at the individuals causing your discomfort than to use the nuclear option as you apparently have.

576 Charles Johnson  Sun, Apr 5, 2009 9:14:35am

I'm not going to argue about it -- I know for a fact that this was going on, I've read the transcripts. The Parachat subscription costs money, and I'm no longer willing to spend my money to subsidize people who abuse my hospitality.

re: #201 realwest

Well based on what Charles said, I'd say "Cooties to the loungers."

Please no. Are you serious, just because of some jerks you want cooties upon the rest of us?

Too bad you never had fun there. That place was a blast at least a million times! I don't know who was sneaking in and sabotaging our lizard king or our lizard nation. I have hardly been there at all the past few months. I'm sorry if some loungers didn't report some abuse. I hope it's not something I somehow contributed to or neglected to stop or report. I'm sorry about the whole story because, as I say, that place was really a blast many times.

re: #237 Afrocity

I never witnessed any misconduct. We talked about politics, sex, our day to day problems, sex, mostly shoptalk. I would pop in have a drink or two then leave.

I was there mostly before Miguel disappeared last summer. Seems to me maybe like 99% of what I saw there was pleasant (agreeable) and appropriate. Nice respectful types like Zombie -- even Charles would come by.

That is the key here. WE do not own LGF. As much as we may enjoy the time we spend here, Charles has paid for the web hosting, and put in the work to create this site. I hope that all will respect his decision, because he could shut down this site just as easily, and we have no right to demand anything of him.

I'm going to miss the Lounge.

It saddens me immensely that we have lost a cherished (by me) chat resource just because some disgruntled folks could not restrain themselves from engaging in the sort of slanderous ranting there that would never be tolerated on the threads.

Me too. I miss fighting (and learning) with you, as well as many others there over the years. It was great fun so often.

It was also such a nice place to go get personal advice from time to time. That's usually sorta weird to try at the threads.

re: #249 Sharmuta

I do hope we get the new email system soon. The lounge was my main way of getting another Lizard's email addy.

Yes. That too was nice about the lounge.

587 katemaclaren  Sun, Apr 5, 2009 10:51:41am

Wow. I'm shocked. I don't think I ever heard anyone except maybe once ages ago say he/she was thinking of leaving because of the creation/id threads, but that was it. I haven't gone there but a couple of times because I couldn't really keep up with that lightning round dialogue, then would lose track of what was being said--it was too hard. However, I did like a couple of the posters there--they had very quick wits and made me laugh.
I'm really sorry this has happened--it's painful. If I were Charles and found this out, I'd be angry and well, hurt, too--and I'm sure I would probably do the very same thing--hang up the out of business sign. Sigh.

593 So?  Sun, Apr 5, 2009 11:17:24am

Well, I've only been there once or twice in the last 5 months. Before that though I was there quite often and I never heard any of that stuff going on. It did turn into a degenerate sex romp at times, but all parties involved were having a blast. Funny, I almost went there last night, but decided to watch a movie instead. Well, I hope it re-opens again.

594 Timbre  Sun, Apr 5, 2009 12:10:35pm

I liked the lounge, especially the regulars from shortly after it was created, but I haven't really used it for a while, and haven't seen serious discussions that stayed on track, so perhaps having for a while allowed us to argue things out privately it became redundant. Whatever you decide, Charles, I'm likely to support your point of view, and you've got a wonderful project here.

597 MSMediacritic  Sun, Apr 5, 2009 12:57:11pm

I will truly miss the lounge. I did not witness much of the behavior described, but I was only in there late at night. Most of the discussions were not serious -- which is why we avoided the whole intelligent design topic. Most of just wanted to enjoy each other's company. I had just mentioned that I wished Charles would stop by more often.

And I will never forget sending hatchlings on quests... we did that so they would go out on the threads and get themselves banned.

And victor -- I offered to let him stay in my basement (and move out of his mother's). Thing is, I don't have a basement. I do have a lovely crawlspace, though.

Miguel didn't disappear. Miguel quit because of several of the Lizards that are still here in their "holier than thou" attitude continuously pinged on him because he supported his Roman Catholic faith, and for some reason Christians get pinged on here. Hummm, that seems to be OK. I wonder why what happens?

Gee, not show up for a day or two and it goes boom. When I was there it was policed- I helped make sure the host wasn't insulted. Like MANY others have said it was fun and relaxing. The snarling tone and even cursings of some posters here on the threads that are allowed to go on -(teachers pets) and the gang down dingings- were not part of the lounge. Light fun and friendly was the code. Friendly hellos to those who popped in and out- like on "Cheers" - (NORM!) were the order of the day- ( I know- I helped hone it to a fine art.) Come on Charles, you can find the time and inclination to debug it so only the good folks can go back in. Is it just about the money?(Follow the money)- What does it cost you a year? -we can donate to keep it going! Here is hoping you calm down and bring it back. Please bring it back! We like LGF but LOVE the LOUNGE. Anyway, as Tigger on Winnie the Pooh said- TTFN.

Hugs to all my LL friends. Take care and be careful feeding peanuts to elephants. :-)
