Denmark’s Leader Will Apologize for Cartoons of Blasphemy

What do you have to do to become the secretary general of NATO these days?

Apologize to the Islamic world for exercising your right to freedom of expression.

Anders Fogh Rasmussen, Denmark’s leader, was one of the few European politicians who refused to give in to pressure from fundamentalists in the Middle East when a Danish newspaper published the now infamous “Mohammed cartoons.” His attitude was welcomed by may Europeans, especially by conservatives. He was quickly promoted to “hero of the freedom of speech,” and became one of the old continent’s most popular politicians.

But then something changed. Rasmussen set his eyes upon NATO. He wanted to become the organization’s next secretary general. An ambitious man, Rasmussen proved willing to be whatever it takes to accomplish his goals.

One of those ‘things’: apologizing to the “Islamic world” for the cartoons.

Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip does not like Rasmussen very much. So when the latter appeared to be the man most likely succeed secretary general Jaap de Hoop Scheffer, the former put up a fight. Turkey would not agree to let Rasmussen accomplish his goal, Erdogan said, unless Turkey got something in return and unless Rasmussen would apologize to “the Islamic world.’

Rasmussen agreed. Dutch magazine Elsevier reports he will do so tomorrow, in Istanbul.

What a disgrace.

The “Islamic world” should apologize to the rest of us for the violence and murders that followed the publication of the dreaded cartoons of blasphemy. But we’ve arrived in the brave new world of Hopenchange, in which (relatively) sane people apologize for “provoking” the horrible behavior of others, and grovel before violent thugs and religious extremists.

Charles I believe this story is not very correct. Anders Fogh Rasmussen is in fact a man of high integrity. He stood up for the freedom of speech in relation to the muhammed cartoon affair, which many of his colleagues in europe as well as the americas didnt! No mainstream media in US printed the cartoons…..

As far as I know he has not promised to give an apology for the newspapers printing of the cartoon. In fact / at the danish press conference after his election to become sercretary general he denied that this would happen. He will be going to Turkey with Obama but I doubt he will apologize for those cartoons!

As a guest to Turkey he might go and talk coexistence of cultures etc. but I would be highly suprised if he actually gave an apology as this articles insinuates.

Give him some credit Charles! He sent danish troops to IRAQ and AFGHANISTAN in large numbers considering Denmarks size. In fact now they operate in southern afghanistan, the most dangerous areas!

Let us wait and see if that apology will really come!

Obama is supposed to be speaking to the Organization of the Islamic Conference in Turkey on Tuesday April 7th according to what I just heard on Middle East Radio Forum on KKNT here in Phoenix.

They are speculating a big push to pressure Israel to give up the Golan, and recognize a Hamas Palestinian state.

Speculation?

/hell, he’s publicly endorsed the Saudi “peace” plan, how many more clues do people need to figure out which side he’s on?

He handed in his resignation today as Primeminister, and his successor Lars Lokke Rasmussen was appointed by Queen Margrethe II to take over and form a new government. Still Centre right (thank god).

It is true that the Turks did get some promises from them pointing to Anders Fogh as secretary general, the deal was like the ones you see in the Turkish Bazar.

However in the process of not backing mr. Rasmussen, they scored a serious own goal> their acceptance into EU is now further away than ever, and in the process they showed an absolute misunderstanding of how NATO and EU operate!

All major european countries France, UK, Germany and ITaly backed mr. Rasmussen as NATO sec. general.

I follow your blog regularily Charles but with this issue I think you are a bit off.

I stand by my prediction that the world is hurtling towards the precipice of a global conflagration that will dwarf the scale of the war of 1939-45 in terms of carnage and physical destruction. On one side will be the 1.2 billion Islamic drones and on the other will be the rest of the world. Appeasements such as the “apology” of Fog Rasmussen will not delay the ignition of the fire that will engulf us all. History teaches that such appeasements in fact accelerate the process.

There’s one other perversely good thing about this episode. It’s another straw piled onto the camel’s back. We’re one step closer to the point where the general populace, at least in the USA, is going to stand up and say, “Screw this! We’re not going to let religious fanatics tell us what we can and can’t say, EVEN IF they are homicidal maniacs!”

Right now, Leftist posers in the USA are all too willing to take that brave stance against people they characterize as Christian fanatics, because those fanatics rarely resort to homicide to enforce their beliefs. But (as directly evidenced by the South Park “Cartoon Wars” episode and the expressed position of Comedy Central that they feared Muslim fanatics) these “lions of free speech” don’t have the guts to stand up against actual threats.

In my opinion, that will change soon enough. Even the multicultural sensitivists of the Left will get fed up with living on their knees and will decide that the traditional freedoms of the West are worth standing up for, even at the risk of a violent reaction from the enemies of those freedoms.

Maybe I am too optimistic, but I hope I am right.

The difference between the 1930s and today is that the balance of military power is far less equal between us and the Islamic world than it was between the Allies and the Axis.

The biggest threat is that in a conflict between the West and the Islamic world, China and/or Russia will take the Islamofascists’ side in the interest of Realpolitik and establishing themselves as a rival superpower.

How can one man apologize for the actions of another? What did he do to atone for it? Did he propose legislation banning images of the Prophet? Did he find a way to fine or jail the cartoonist? Did he make any proposals to the UN regarding defamation of religion?

So what has he done to earn the trust of any Islamic society? This apology is mere words, not deeds. The Islamic world isn’t going to see this as an apology. They’re going to see this as more waffling and weasel words from Western culture.

And for once, I agree with them. (Not that I want to see any of this crap happen). I simply don’t understand what Rasmussen or NATO could have hoped for.

Here’s the Turk’s point of view. They seem to have three bones to pick with Rasmussen.

“Terrorist TV” Rasmussen tolerated the PKK’s (Kurdistan Worker’s Party) activities in Denmark, and gave permission to the terrorist organization launching a television channel in Copenhagen: Roj TV, perceived as a culture channel by the Danish authorities, which enhances the so-called suppressed Kurds’ language and culture. However, to ignore the close relations between Roj TV and the PKK, one should be blind or malicious. 

Like the cartoon controversy, this is another case of Denmark tolerating too much freedom of speech, in this case Kurdish speech.

“Cartoon crisis” Rasmussen declared that he personally condemned the caricatures, yet, he continued to evaluate the issue within the context of freedom of speech. His management of crisis was not only unsuccessful but also was narrow sided. Rasmussen ignored dialog and underestimated Turkey and its soft power. Today, for many Muslims, Denmark is a country which insulted their Prophet.

While Rasmussen might try to rationalize his apology as merely repeating, in Istanbul, his personal condemnation of the cartoons, it doesn’t hide the venality of selling out our liberty for his career.

Turkey’s EU Membership Since he has been opposing Turkey’s EU membership as the first Muslim country to be in the EU, it is not hard to guess to what extent Rasmussen would damage the relations between the NATO and other Muslim countries.

Are the Turks throwing their NATO weight around just to force Rasmussen to say uncle? Maybe. Or do they hope to delegitimize Rasmussen and his opposition to Turkey’s EU membership? I bet Rasmussen has a change of heart here too.

During the mo show, it was clear to me that there were formed a common India-US-DK axis against the retardedness, and I think it will strengthen in the future.
