Here Comes LGF’s 7,000,000th Comment

Blogosphere • Views: 4,690

As I write, we have about 700 comments to go before someone posts the seven millionth comment at LGF. W00t!

Comment #6,000,000 was posted only six short months ago, so the rate of commenting continues to accelerate, eventually, perhaps, reaching a singularity in which every comment ever posted will suddenly become one with the universe.

Or perhaps not.

UPDATE at 4/7/09 2:40:29 pm:

And the poster of the 7,000,000th comment was …

Goddessoftheclassroom, whose words will now be immortalized:

I’ve got to go—take care!

ALERT - ALERT - ALERT

Killgore, don't forget, tomorrow night, the next episode of LOST, entitled "Dead is Dead." It's evident with these titles, they are finally clearing up some questions.

What happened, happened, if your dead, your dead. And the code name for the final episode this season (coming up in May) is "The Fork in the Socket." Which could mean anything.

DON'T SPOIL TOMORROWS EPISODE FOR ME. I will not be watching tomorrow evening, as I will be at a Passover seder. So I will have to watch it online in a few days. So, if you catch me on here in the next 48 hours, don't ruin the episode for me.

Fairly unique locomotive...only nine of them built by EMD- all of them sold to the Alaska Railway (the high-hood GP39X's built for Southern Railway and later rebuilt to GP49 specs don't count). Apparently the Alaska RR retired remainder of the GP49s late last year and sold them to Helm leasing....

More recently, they're retiring the fleet of Budd RDC self-propelled railcars and MP15DC 1500HP switchers.

The Buddliners would be of great historical interest (and still practical on some passenger routes) while the MP15DCs would be quite useful to any short-haul, switching or transfer railway.

Too bad I have nowhere to put them. Well, the commuter rail/Guilford line is a block away...

Apparently for the last couple of years the money has been in leasing the locomotives to the larger railways when they seem to have more traffic than locomotives.

I kind you not....Union Pacific retired a bunch of their former Southern Pacific SD40T-2's en masse. Alot of them went to the smaller reigonal/shortline outfits from Oregon to NY State. Some of them wound up to different leasing companies who purchased them at scrap-metal prices and promptly leased them back to Union Pacific because those new GE locomotives they ordered would be delayed by several months...

Same goes for BNSF and their fleet of SD40-2s (Guilford/PanAm might be looking to purchase some of those, too).

Who's at your Tea Party?

This pic was taken at the Carolina Sweet Tea Party in North Carolina on April 4th.

Who is Nesara?

NESARA is an acronym for the proposed National Economic Stabilization and Recovery Act, a set of economic reforms promulgated during the 1990s by Dr. Harvey Barnard. Barnard claimed that the proposals, which included replacing the income tax with a national sales tax (see also FairTax), abolishing compound interest on secured loans, and returning to a bimetallic currency, would result in 0% inflation and a more stable economy. The proposals were never introduced before congress, and the only congressman known to have commented on the bill is Ron Paul, dismissively, and through a spokesman.[1] NESARA has since become better known as the subject of a cult-like conspiracy theory promoted by Shaini Goodwin, who claims that the act was actually passed with additional provisions as the National Economic Security and Reformation Act, and then suppressed by the George W. Bush administration and the Supreme Court. Other people have adopted and embellished Goodwin's ideas.

Waiting For NESARA

They seem nice.

So one wonders what will happen to the 7 millionth post will there be balloons and streamers? will the post be framed and hung in the underground lair? Will that post be remembered for all time? Should I try to keep posting in hopes that I might be the magic post?

But then what if I AM the 7 millionth, can I take the pressure, the public scrutiny of the post? What if I inadvertently make a boob pun in that post? I can't take it. I am going to go wait till after its posted and then come back...

The 7 millionth poster will get signed up for email spam offering to enlarge their penis or give them free pr0n. They will also have about 10 keyloggers downloaded onto their system and they will have to reformant their hard drive.

252 Bob Dillon  Tue, Apr 7, 2009 2:05:25pm

As long as we're looking at numbers ... how are these for mind numbing?

Here are the 20 biggest holders of U.S. government debt. . .

20. Republic of Ireland — $50 Billion

As a country with just 4.2 million citizens, Ireland currently holds $50 billion in U.S. government debt. Between January 2008 and January 2009, Ireland increased its holding of American debt by 221%.

19. Germany — $56 Billion

Germany is a member of the United Nations (UN), North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), Group of Eight (G8), and Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). It is a major economic power with the world's third largest economy by nominal GDP and the fifth largest in purchasing power parity. Germany is the world's largest exporter and second largest importer of goods. The central European country controls $56 billion in U.S. Treasuries.

18. Switzerland — $62 Billion

The neutral, landlocked, alpine country, which hosts many international organizations including the Red Cross and World Trade Organization (WTO), owns just over $62 billion in U.S. debt.

17. Hong Kong — $72 Billion

Renowned for its expansive skyline and natural setting, Hong Kong holds about $72 billion in U.S. government debt. Hong Kong is one of the world's leading financial capitals, a major business and cultural hub, and maintains a highly-developed capitalist economy.

16. Taiwan — $73 Billion

As another advanced, high-income Southeast Asian economy, Taiwan owns about $73 billion in U.S. Treasuries. The country's technology industry plays a key role in the global economy, as Taiwanese companies manufacture a giant portion of the world's consumer electronics.

15. Luxembourg — $87 Billion

With a population of less than 500,000, Luxembourg owns over $87 billion in American debt. The tiny country is a founding member of the European Union (EU), NATO, UN, Benelux, and the Western European Union, reflecting a political consensus in favor of economic, political, and military integration.

14. Depository Institutions — $107 Billion

According to the Federal Reserve Board of Governors, depository institutions, such as commercial banks, savings banks, and credit unions, hold over $107 billion in government debt.

13. Russia — $120 Billion

Russia is the largest country in the world, covering more than an eighth of the Earth's land area. With 142 million people, it is the ninth largest by population. The transcontinental country currently holds about $120 billion in U.S. debt. This figure increased 240% between January 2008 and January 2009.

12. United Kingdom — $124 Billion

Britain was the world's first industrialized country and the world's foremost power during the 19th and early 20th centuries. Today, the United Kingdom currently holds $124 billion in U.S. debt securities and has the fifth largest economy in the world by nominal GDP.

11. Insurance Companies — $126 Billion

The Federal Reserve Board of Governors lists insurance companies as holding $126 billion in Treasury securities. This group includes property-casualty and life insurance firms.

10. Brazil — $134 Billion

Brazil is the fifth largest country in the world by geographical area, occupying nearly half of South America, and the fifth most populous country. The South American economic giant holds $134 billion in U.S. debt.

9. Caribbean Banking Centers — $177 Billion

The U.S. Treasury identifies the Bahamas, Bermuda, the Cayman Islands, the Netherlands Antilles, Panama, and the British Virgin Islands as holding $177 billion in American debt.

8. Oil Exporters — $186 Billion

Included in the group of oil exporters are Ecuador, Venezuela, Indonesia, Bahrain, Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Algeria, Gabon, Libya, and Nigeria. The group combines for a total of approximately $187 billion held in U.S. government debt.

255 Bob Dillon  Tue, Apr 7, 2009 2:05:45pm

and ...

7. Other Investors — $413 Billion

This diverse group includes individuals, government-sponsored enterprises, brokers and dealers, bank personal trusts, estates, and both corporate and non-corporate businesses for a total of $413 billion held in U.S. national debt.

6. Pension Funds — $456 Billion

Pension funds control large amounts of cash, which is reserved for personal retirements, and are therefore obligated to make relatively safe investments, such as U.S. Treasury securities. This group includes both private and local government pension funds, totaling over $456 billion.

5. State and Local Governments — $523 Billion

State and local governments hold over a half-trillion dollars in U.S. Treasuries. The level of investment has remained very stable over the past three years, moving within the range of $517 billion and $550 billion from 2006 to 2009.

4. Japan — $635 Billion

As another major U.S. trade partner, the archipelago country of Japan holds a huge amount of America's debt with a stunning $635 billion. Japan has the world's second largest economy by nominal GDP and the third largest in purchasing power parity.

3. Mainland China — $740 Billion

The economy of Mainland China is the second largest in the world after that of the United States with a GDP of almost $8 trillion by purchasing power parity. China has been the fastest-growing major nation for the past quarter of a century with an average annual GDP growth rate above 10%. As one of the world's continuous civilizations, consisting of states and cultures dating back more than six millennia, China now controls approximately $740 billion in U.S. debt.

2. Mutual Funds — $769 Billion

Mutual funds hold the second largest amount of American debt compared to any other group. Including money market funds, mutual funds, and closed-end funds, this group of investments manages approximately $769 billion of U.S. Treasury securities.

1. The Federal Reserve and U.S. Intragovernmental Holdings — $4,806 Billion

This probably comes to you as no surprise. The largest holder of U.S. government debt is the privately-owned Federal Reserve. The Federal Reserve system of banks and other U.S. intragovernmental holdings accounts for a stunning $4.8 trillion in U.S. Treasury debt. And with recent announcements from the Fed, another potential $1 trillion may be added to its balance sheet.

When did Deus Ex Machina become a valid way to end a story rather than a cheap and easy way out?

When the writers either get tired of the series or the eco-freaks sneak in a rewrite.

While I did like most of the ending, there was a lot that really did not sit well with me. I'm sorry, but if I'm planted on a habitable world and I've got some good technology to help me survive, I'm going to put it to use.

And the trite reasoning of "starting all over again so we don't repeat our mistakes." I guess they had no faith that writing things down and teaching what happened before would have helped.

Would you prefer a lobster quadrille?

"Will you walk a little faster?" said a whiting to a snail,
"There's a porpoise close behind us, and he's treading on my tail.
See how eagerly the lobsters and the turtles all advance!
They are waiting on the shingle - will you come and join the dance?
Will you, won't you, will you, won't you, will you join the dance?
Will you, won't you, will you, won't you, won't you join the dance?

"You can really have no notion how delightful it will be
When they take us up and throw us, with the lobsters, out to sea!"
But the snail replied, "Too far, too far!" and gave a look askance -
Said he thanked the whiting kindly, but he would not join the dance.
Would not, could not, would not, could not, would not join the dance.
Would not, could not, would not, could not, could not join the dance.

"What matters it how far we go?" his scaly friend replied,
"There is another shore, you know, upon the other side.
The further off from England the nearer is to France -
Then turn not pale, beloved snail, but come and join the dance.
Will you, won't you, will you, won't you, will you join the dance?
Will you, won't you, will you, won't you, won't you join the dance?

Gay Marriage: If I just look at it on a people level I am in favor of it. I don't see how it causes any harm. And little kids will just have to grow up with Ken/Ken Barbie/Barbie play sets.

If I look at it in what I term to be divinity. I think nature works best with a man and woman as the ideal coupling scenario. It's ok to do other stuff, but lets make the summit of marriage actions as man/woman.

Or you want a new term like Working Units that incorporate marriage as one of the versions of it. Let the marriage people have their divine goal, but recognize other divine goals also.

I'm not about to expand on that and be declared a suck-up (if peeps only knew how close I've been to gone), but that the Palin thread went as it did (as far as I've gotten-maybe 2/3rds?), says more about this place than Kos, Moveon, and the MFM could ever accept, live with. or understand! I am in awe, and proud to be a Lizard, even if a yung'un...

Rant/Praise mode off.......but it was deserved, Big Lizard. IMHO...

Personal life

On April 17, 2004, in New York City, Lakshmi married the novelist Salman Rushdie, to whom she was introduced at a party hosted by the journalist and editor Tina Brown.[2] On July 2, 2007 the couple filed for divorce, shortly after Rushdie was granted a knighthood.[21] She is the model for one of the central characters — and love interests — in Rushdie's novel, Fury (a novel dedicated to her as well).

When questioned about Rushdie's age (he is seven years older than her father) and her long estrangement from her father (whom she has described as "the most sexy, manic, in-shape, lean, tall, handsome man I have ever met"), Lakshmi has said that there may be a correlation: “I think that we are attracted to what we feel we need."[22]

Group digs up dirt on swing set

In the latest episode of Life Under the Microscope, the White House playground for Sasha, Malia and friends is stirring controversy. An environmental health group is contending that the playground's ground-up-tire mulch poses a health risk.

"This is not a material that children should be playing on," wrote Nancy Alderman, president of Environment and Human Health Inc., which calls itself a "non-profit organization composed of doctors, public health professionals and policy experts ... dedicated to protecting human health from environmental harms."

The group said an analysis of ground-up tires done by the Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station found a carcinogen as well as chemicals that irritate the skin, eyes and mucous membranes.

A pediatrician at Mt. Sinai Hospital in New York City concluded in March that "we are suddenly, and belatedly, beginning to realize that synthetic turf fields may, in fact, be associated with health problems in children."

re: #293 Dianna

I have an old edition of Alice in Wonderland. No copyright date; plates with the Tenniel illustrations. I finally found it at a rare book site, to find it isn't that rare. Oh well.

All in the golden afternoon
Full leisurely we glide;
For both our oars, with little skill,
By little arms are plied,
While little hands make vain pretence
Our wanderings to guide.

Ah, cruel Three! In such an hour
Beneath such dreamy weather,
To beg a tale of breath too weak
To stir the tiniest feather!
Yet what can one poor voice avail
Against three tongues together?

Imperious Prima flashes forth
Her edict "To begin it" -
In gentler tone Secunda hopes
"There will be nonsense in it!" -
While Tertia interrupts the tale
Not more than once a minute.

Anon, to sudden silence won,
In fancy they pursue
The dream-child moving through a land
Of wonders wild and new,
In friendly chat with bird or beast -
And half believe it true.

And ever, as the story drained
The wells of fancy dry,
And faintly strove that weary one
To put the subject by,
"The rest next time -", "It is next time!"
The happy voices cry.

Thus grew the tale of Wonderland:
Thus slowly, one by one,
Its quaint events were hammered out
And now the tale is done,
And home we steer, a merry crew,
Beneath the setting sun.

Alice! A childish story take,
And with a gentle hand
Lay it where Childhood's dreams are twined
In Memory's mystic band,
Like pilgrim's wither'd wreath of flowers
Pluck'd in a far-off land.

You have to love gnocchi- a food with it's own evolutionary history:

It’s been a traditional Italian pasta type of probably Middle Eastern origin since Roman times (Imperium Romanum). It was introduced by the Roman Legions during the enormous expansion of the empire into the countries of the European continent. In the past 2000 years each country developed its own specific type of small dumplings, with the ancient Gnocchi as their common ancestor.

Perhaps an old Irish Tune?

words by Randy Farran, music traditional

A dragon has come to our village today.
We've asked him to leave, but he won't go away.
Now he's talked to our king and they worked out a deal.
No homes will he burn and no crops will he steal.

Now there is but one catch, we dislike it a bunch.
Twice a year he invites him a virgin to lunch.
Well, we've no other choice, so the deal we'll respect.
But we can't help but wonder and pause to reflect.

Do virgins taste better than those who are not?
Are they salty, or sweeter, more juicy or what?
Do you savor them slowly? Gulp them down on the spot?
Do virgins taste better than those who are not?

Now we'd like to be shed you, and many have tried.
But no one can get through your thick scaly hide.
We hope that some day, some brave knight will come by.
'Cause we can't wait around 'til you're too fat to fly.

Now you have such good taste in your women for sure,
They always are pretty, they always are pure.
But your notion of dining, it makes us all flinch,
For your favorite entree is barbecued wench.

Now we've found a solution, it works out so neat,
If you insist on nothing but virgins to eat.
No more will our number ever grow small,
We'll simply make sure there's no virgins at all!

Obama highlights his Muslim roots in Turkey speech

Obama, who downplayed his own family ties to Islam during last year’s presidential campaign, found them of greater use in the Turkish capital, telling a gathering of the Grand National Assembly that “the United States has been enriched by Muslim-Americans.

“Many other Americans have Muslims in their family, or have lived in a Muslim-majority country,” Obama said. “I know, because I am one of them.”

Obama ends Europe trip with tour of Istanbul mosque

Taking off his shoes as tradition requires, Obama stepped into the 17th-century Sultanahmet Mosque in the ancient heart of Istanbul, accompanied by Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan amid tight security in the area.

Two Muslim preachers guided Obama inside the grandiose edifice -- better known as the Blue Mosque for its blue tileworks -- and the president smiled when they showed him a dome scripture mentioning the Prophet Mohammed's grandson Hussein, Obama's middle name, Anatolia news agency reported.

In a major speech at the Turkish parliament in Ankara Monday, Obama declared that the United States "is not and never will be at war with Islam" and called Turkey a "critical ally," earning himself much praise in a country where his predecessor left the US image in tatters.

"Obama conquers hearts," the popular Vatan newspaper trumpeted on its front page, while the liberal Taraf said the speech marked the end of "the bellicose spirit of September 11."

/yeah, Turkey, our NATO ally that totally [expletive deleted] up our Iraqi Freedom deployment plans and cost us untold American lives in the ensuing improvisation, now they're our best buddies?

No, he's John Kerry's valet. It's from an article about Kerry's daily routine in the 2004 campaign. Wade's other major responsibility was keeping Kerry supplied with his favorite peanut butter and jelly sandwiches on the campaign trail. That image just made me feel so sorry for Kerry -- this sad old guy eating PB&J in the back of a limo.

There's nothing wrong with peanut butter and jelly sandwiches in the back of a limo. But I have to raise an eyebrow at someone who marries for money, twice.

Biden talking about Cheney. I wonder how many Americans will be dead when he eats these words.

"I don't think he is out of line, but he is dead wrong. ... The last administration left us in a weaker posture than we've been any time since World War II: less regarded in the world, stretched more thinly than we ever have been in the past, two wars under way, virtually no respect in entire parts of the world," Biden said. "And so we've been about the business of repairing and strengthening those. I guarantee you we are safer today, our interests are more secure today than they were any time during the eight years" of the Bush administration.

re: #409 gmsc

Here's the approach I always use.

I actually taught some of my troops to use memorization, and addition/subtraction. If 1 knows a square close to the #, it's just that. IE. 1x1= 1, 2x2=4, 3x3=9, OK. Take 1x1, add the result plus 1 and 2=4; for 3x3, add the result of 2x2 (4) to the result of 2+3, ad infinatum. It works, and can be used with addition or subtraction-it just takes longer, and is more prone to error. I figured that little bit of info out when my advanced algebra teacher gave me a Homework assignment of taking all squares thru INFINITY (he didn't like me)....:>))

What does 7,000,000 comments mean anyway? As we pass this milestone, let as remember all of the Lizards who have fallen before us. Some flamed out in self burning martyrdoms. Others simply decided that they really hate science. Some even thought that we were just too soft and should kiss up to the neo-nazis.

I bow my head for those who have fallen as we pass the 7,000,000th comment. I do not miss them. Rather, I am pleased to see that we have a group of people who is interested in some degree of sanity in politics and who love America and want to keep her sane.

Turkey can't be trusted. They base their foreign policy decisions on cartoons. I do not care if this sounds bigoted, but any nation that puts Islam ahead of other real issues is not rational and none of them can be trusted. They will stab you in the back. They will almost always side with their religion when it comes down to it.

Turkey should also not be admitted into the EU, that would be a big mistake, even though the US thinks otherwise.

re: #647 Pietr

I also have favorite methods for mentally doing cube roots, fifth roots and square roots.

If you're really up to the task, try out exponential expressions!

re: #922 Pietr

I made up a formula in Geometry that impressed the Teacher-and he'd co-written the textbook we were using. But I'm not an auto math type-I have to work at it, LOL. But it came in handy, when I became an electronic tech.....:>))

Ever hear of Solomon W. Golomb? By the time he was in college, he had memorized all the exponential expressions of the form XY up to 1010.

He was in his college biology class, where the teacher mentioned that human DNA has 24 chromosones (We now know it actually has 23, but it was believed to be 24 at the time). The teacher then mentioned that this meant there were 224 possibilities, and joked that "everybody knows how many that is."

Young Mr. Golomb immediately shouted out, "Yep! It's 16,777,216!" The teacher thought he was trying to be funny, and used a calculator to work out the problem. He was astounded that it actually was 16,777,216!

How did he know? As I mentioned, he had memorized all the exponential expressions of the form XY up to 1010. While he couldn't do 224 in his head, he did realize that this was the same thing as 88, which he did know!

Three Black Caucus Members Meet With Fidel Castro
Three lawmakers who are members of the Congressional Black Caucus traveled to Cuba this week to encourage greater dialogue between the U.S. and the communist nation.

[Link: www.foxnews.com...]

The U.S. delegation -- all Democrats -- included Lee and Reps. Mel Watt of North Carolina, Emanuel Cleaver of Missouri, Marcia Fudge of Ohio, Mike Honda and Laura Richardson of California and Bobby Rush of Illinois. All are also member of the Congressional Black Caucus except Honda.

Castro issued a statement saying that one member of the delegation, who he does not name, described American society as "racist" and said that former Secretary of State Colin Powell could have been president but his family rightly talked him out of it because of fear that he would be assassinated like Martin Luther King, Jr. was.

re: #998 Nevergiveup

Is it even legal for representatives of the US to meet with a country that we don't recognize?

From the State Dept website:

The regulations require that persons subject to U.S. jurisdiction be licensed in order to engage in any travel-related transactions pursuant to travel to, from, and within Cuba. Transactions related to tourist travel are not licensable.
General licenses are granted to the following categories of travelers, who are permitted to spend money to travel to Cuba and to engage in other transactions directly incident to the purpose of their travel, without the need to obtain a specific license from the U.S. Treasury Department
Official government travelers on official business.

BUT

The purpose of the meeting or conference cannot be the promotion of tourism in Cuba or other commercial activities involving Cuba

and clearly, they talked about promoting tourism

Castro said that one unnamed member of the delegation told him that Obama "can not go beyond liberalizing travel and allowing remittances by Cuban-Americans
