Obama Aide Denies Barack Bowed to Saudi King

World • Views: 4,079

Expect this news to launch a round of screaming that Barack Obama is lying: White House: No bow to Saudi.

“It wasn’t a bow. He grasped his hand with two hands, and he’s taller than King Abdullah,” said an Obama aide, who spoke on the condition of anonymity.

As I wrote at the time:

Even if Obama did bow to Abdullah (the photo is not really proof of that)…

I think they're trying to fan the flames of craziness by directing more attention to a non-issue.

Meanwhile- what's Congress doing with our money?

The White House is full of shit on this one. It is a bow, just as much as George Bush's was several years ago, and just as bad.

The video quality is pretty atrocious, but it shows thay Vijay Singh teed off and hit his ball directly into a lake -- but in some bizarre miracle, the ball bounced off the surface of the lake (I have never seen that happen before) and bounce onto the green and into the hole for a hole-in one!

Clinton was masterful at looking people straight in the face and lying to them. He did irreparable damage to our political discourse in this country. After Clinton, a mistake or different interpretation of the same set of facts was called a lie by political opponents.

It will be interesting to see if Obama is as good as Clinton.

It will also be interesting to see if Obama even cares that he is called a liar.

It's quite a habit with them. They lie, and then they lie about the lies. Too bad for them that some of us have seen this all before. King Richard II of Chicago does this constantly. Well I have never hit a hole in one, came close a few times, but I have hit balls that skipped across the surface of the water. Not that unusual really. I have even seen a guy skip one over the water, then make it to the other side where it hit a rock and bounced back in. Ha.

52 Diamond Bullet  Wed, Apr 8, 2009 2:44:16pm

Gee, this is a tough one. On one hand, an Obama aide says it wasn't a bow (not that there's anything wrong with that!). And on the other, pretty much every person on the planet who has seen it, including both U.S. and Saudi media, say that it is. But since we don't know what the definition of "is" is, we therefore cannot know what the definition of "bow" is. Advantage: Obama.

What's especially astounding is that if you watch the end closely, the dirty muck the ball picked up from the water was necessary to slow it down perfectly enough to go into the hole -- as if bouncing off the lake was an essential requirement to get the hole in one. If the ball was clean, it would have missed the hole!

76 Athens Runaway  Wed, Apr 8, 2009 2:46:47pm

What's especially astounding is that if you watch the end closely, the dirty muck the ball picked up from the water was necessary to slow it down perfectly enough to go into the hole -- as if bouncing off the lake was an essential requirement to get the hole in one. If the ball was clean, it would have missed the hole!

Where was ESPN!?! Really amazingly amazing shot.

124 tryptic67  Wed, Apr 8, 2009 2:52:56pm

Is the meme here now that Obama (a) is telling the truth, so (b) there was no bow?

Sort of a replacement of the earlier theorem that (a) Obama did bow but (b) so what, every American president since JFK has bowed, metaphorically or not; and (c) Bush had a more profound bow.

Charlest, I seem to recall you commenting several days ago that you found the Obama bow reprehensible, but that it would be hypocritical to claim it was anything new or anything to get worked up about, particularly after GWB's handholding, sword dance and receiving a medal from Ibn Saud. Now with the last line in your post, however, it seems you're backing off saying it was a bow at all. That would seem to undercut your previous positions.

Would you mind clarifying if you think the Obama White House is correct or incorrect on saying it is a bow? Many thanks.

125 JammieWearingFool  Wed, Apr 8, 2009 2:53:08pm

It's obvious he bowed, or curtsy-ed, or whatever you want to call it. The joke of it is he clearly didn't know protocol and realize you don't bow to the oil ticks unless you're a subject.

Believe me, it was sickening enough seeing Bush pal around with these freaks as well.

But for Obama to try and deny this is just pathetic. Since the media gave him a pass, why even bring it up?

126 Achilles Tang  Wed, Apr 8, 2009 2:53:16pm

Whatever, it would seem that it would have been appropriate to make sure that the Saudi king HAD to look up to him. I doubt the Saudis would have made an issue of the fact that he was taller and DIDN'T bow down enough.

OR,

These are the grips I'm thinking about buying after about a week of looking. They are $129, so if you wondered what hi-dollar grips looked like, well, these are medium dollar grips. I'm also considering a pair of these, Link. The Micarta are about half the price of the fine wood.

The first ones are very nice-looking... but seem pricey, I like rosewood ones just fine for $60. I can't open the second link, but that's because of the Net Nanny here at the office (guns are bad, you see... but Nanny for some reason didn't block the first link).

Anyway, it's a very personal thing, of course... I saw a gorgeous Wilson Combat M1911 the last time I was at the range, to which the owner had affixed pricey grips emblazoned with... the skull & crossbones symbol. Wouldn't have been my choice, but hey, it's not my gun!

I think the reason for the upset is that this is just another piece of evidence that fits into the overall policy puzzle. The zero has no love or attachment to the US or its Constitution. He's willing to give up everything this country stands for including its dignity.

We just busted an Iranian arms ring, and were discussing 'a bow or not a bow'.

199 yesandno  Wed, Apr 8, 2009 3:02:57pm

Except when you look at the film, he grasps the Kings hand just before the bow and the King had raised his hand up, so don't buy it.

If I remember correctly the Queen was even shorter and he walked right up to her and took her hand when offered.

I'm throwing this non-issue in the bin with "giving Brown DVDs that he can't play", "buying the Queen an iPod", "thinking Chirac was still the French President", etc. It's a non-starter, and a distraction. Symptom of a larger problem? Sure. Something to get upset about? Nope.

Add those to:

No one that makes under $250k will see their taxes go up.

Iran is not a threat.

Today is the day the oceans' rise begins to slow, and the world begins to heal.

Let's open the doors to Gitmo and give the detainees welfare.

Yeah, I'd call it a symptom of a much larger problem.

232 zombie  Wed, Apr 8, 2009 3:07:56pm

In Japan, bowing has great significance.

First of all, you are pretty much required to bow in formal occasions. However, the bow you give to your superior must be lower than the bow he gives to you. That's why people like CEOs and heads of state give barely perceptible bows, because if they bowed deeply, they'd compel everyone to break their backs trying to go lower.

But this system can get very touchy in situations where superiority is not obvious. If two heads of state meet, who bows lower? I think the custom is carefully calibrate the bows to be equal.

Now, my belief is that this attittude is common to every culture, even ours -- it's only been formalized in Japan. I think Americans wouldn't mind a little bow to a foreign leader, but only if the foregin leader bowed back at least as deeply.

What many people apparently saw was the Obama bowed/dipped/whatever lower than the King, which means he was projecting America's inferiority. Even if this was unconscious on Obama's part, it still stings the national psyche.

Sword dances, pinky-finger carressing don't have the same connotation. And when Bush lowered his head for the medal, he was still above the Saudi king.

That's why this resonates with the public, whatever word one uses to describe Obama's posture.

Meanwhile, the craziest shot in golf history was played yesterday, and the only person to record it was a citizen journalist with a hand-held point-and-shoot camera in video mode.

I believe thats the "skipping contest" portion of the practice rounds on hole 16, so the skipping across the pond was the point, the hole-in-one just makes it that much more awesome.

Expect this news to launch a round of screaming that Barack Obama is lying

Can we please start focusing on issues instead of fluff? This Administration has proposed a budget which

quadruples

the Federal deficit this year, with the claim that next year it will "cut the deficit in half." These gargantuan deficits grow larger and larger and larger in each of the next ten years, no matter whose projections you look at. Projected deficits over the next eight years will exceed the total of all the deficits the United States has ever run, combined. The percentage of the Federal Budget relative to GNP is projected to surge from around 8% to over 15% over the same period.

This is madness. It must be stopped. Quite quibbling over trivia like his cheap suit and hallucinations over whether he bowed or not. It isn't worth it, it won't ever gain any traction except amongst those already rabidly opposed to Obama in the first place, and in the end it just won't accomplish anything useful except making Glenn Beck look like a calm, thoughtful and rational thinker.

Insert something about a kid and a naked emporer here.

Except, the fabled emporer, when caught, admitted it and moved on. Caught in the back end of this little fable is one of the great secrets of true leadership....that admitting the flub is much more powerful than denying it.

So Dianna, turning to the important questions; what kind of grips do you have on your Kimbers?

I kept the standards that came with my Eclipse II. I talked to a gunsmith, and he adjusted them the slightest bit, but that's it.

I've got a big hand for a woman, so the grip is good for me. Even working in pistoleer/duelist stance, one handed, I have no problem.

re: #275 captdiggs

This really is a non issue, a diversion from the serious flaws in the new administration.
But in this case, he did bow. Video proves that.

The video also shows that the "two handed" handshake explanation is false.
Freeze this video at 17 seconds, you can see Obama's left hand by his knee as he bows and shakes the Kings hand with his right.
Case closed.

Good catch!

Whichever flak came up with the "two-handed handshake" explanation was indeed lying.

US to take part in group talks with Iran...
RUSSIA SAYS: Iran poses no threat to USA...
Iran set to say mastering final stage of enrichment...
...Moscow opposes sanctions against NKorea over rocket launch

We've had our fill of Birch'ers, Beck'ers, and buttocks these last few days. I agree with Sharm; Obama is hoping to keep the Right distracted by provoking the troofers.

Whether it's intentional or not, I certainly can't blame him for taking advantage of what's handed to him. And you're absolutely right - the issues listed here are real, honest issues that need to be debated and addressed.

I don't mind at all yukking it up over Obama in informal settings like this blog. But letting this clubroom chatter spill over into public discourse is wrong, wrong, wrong. Thanks to Glenn Beck's increasingly prominent freak show, it will be harder than ever to get people to take anything emanating from a conservative source seriously. Adding to that lunacy by broadcasting it beyond the level of sniggering jokes and treating it more seriously than than the issues above, the massive deficits being railroaded through Congress and other matters that are actually important will lead Joe Average, hearing that a Conservative parted their lips, to shrug dismissively and turn away without even hearing, on the assumption that it's just more drivel being spewed.

U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano told reporters the power grid is vulnerable to potentially disabling computer attacks, while declining to comment on reports that an intrusion had taken place.

They won't say because the fear of a breach furthers their cybersecurity czar legislation and makes it easier to pass when they are back in session...these things have been "going on for years" if you read the writeups. The dept of homeland continues to deal with these issues, so it is nothing new. The hoopla is, however, and I suspect it has everything to do with pending legislation. Fear stops people from asking questions when they are trying to pass something that takes freedom away in the name of "national security".

Gen'l De Gaulle stood tall when meeting others; he was about 6'4" in height. I'm not aware of his bowing to any man, perhaps to a lovely woman but certainly not to a king or other potentate.

Perhaps our new president has learned a lesson from this hubbub and will apply such when meeting other such heads of state, remaining straight and upright at all times; GWATCWR. Perhaps this should be put into the ever-present POTUS Teleprompter.

So I got a notice from the Census 2010 folks yesterday. Says "You are required by law to provide the information requested". WTF? So I looked up the listed Title 13 and listed sections. There are a lot of them so I am still researching but so far nothing that says I am required to provide anything other than that I exist as a person by saying "I live here".

Any thoughts there?

The last census that was taken (Clinton years) the questionaire had so many personal and unrelated questions that it totally disgusted me. All I did was put down my name and address and sent it in. Never heard back from them.

387 tedzilla99  Wed, Apr 8, 2009 3:41:22pm

OMG just watch the video on the link provided - his left hand is clearly visible hanging down while he is bowing then he reaches it out for the 2 handed grasp. Who cares if the picture that made the rounds before 'isn't proof' -- the video in the link is pure proof.

And, as I said before, it's sad that he is continuing the maddening obsequiousness of previous presidents, but no president in my memory has bowed that way to another ruler. And to keep saying that Bush bowed too is just silly and nonsensical. Bending over to receive a medal around the neck [whether or not you think he should have accepted it is beside the point] is a show of respect and gratitude; bowing deeply at a first greeting is showing deference. Period - they are not comparable.

Either way, the Teleprompter Administration is lying about this, and it's stupid to do so...but they know that the media is in the tank for them so no worries.

re: #270 UberInfidel67

Maybe the King wears a great big western style Elvis belt buckle?

yep...
I wasnt really paying much attention to this whole bowing thing as I have been traveling.
First off. Lets not pretend it wasn't a bow. It was! Whether one thinks it a big enough thing to get one britches in an uproar is another matter. Clearly, someone at the Whitehorse thinks that it is and is saying it wants a bow.
Second, I also just saw the video Charles posted of Bush "bowing" to same monarch. I haven't had time to go through the thread but was Charles being sarcastic (I love when he is sarcastic) or was he seriously saying that bending down to allow someone to place a medal over ones head is the same as showing subservience to a leader during a greeting? I am assuming he was being sarcastic. PLease clarify.

Again, Obama's bowing is not the end of civilization but is another example of the new administrations poor grasp of protocol. I can smirk and slap my head saying "oh no, not again" but it ain't the end of the world....time to move along

one last thought....Imagine if bending was considered the same as bowing. For the rest of my life every time I put a necklace on my wife I would have to climb on a chair to prevent her from bending or I would never hear the end of it.

It's a bow. The video proves it.

Obama wouldn't bow to the Queen of England, but would bow to the Saudi Prince. Here's the thing. Arab leaders don't bow to the Saudi Prince. The Prez of Egypt doesn't bow to him. But our Prez does.

This, contrasted with no bow to Queen Elizabeth, got a LOT of press on the Arab street. They are gloating and pointing as a sign of our weakness.

396 RedVoter  Wed, Apr 8, 2009 3:45:53pm

David Pryce-Jones:

... It’s an accepted courtesy to royalty to make a little nod with the head, but film and photographs show Obama bending from the waist in a gesture of humble obeisance, as it were, acknowledging his inferior status. And there were the rest of us foolishly thinking that the whole purpose of the republic set up by the founding fathers was that its representatives would be on equal footing with monarchs. Obama further has gone out of his way to praise a so-called “peace” initiative proposed some years ago by King Abdullah. This calls for Israel to give the Palestinians everything they demand, including the return of all refugees. According to Obama, Israel would be “crazy” not to do what King Abdullah specifies, although this means that it must dissolve itself.

At the Arab summit just held in Qatar, King Abdullah had quite the opposite experience. Where Obama fawned, Muammar Gaddafi, the dictator of Libya these many years, showed open disrespect for the king, telling him to his face in front of assembled Arab power-holders, “It has been proven that it is you who have lies behind you and the grave ahead, and it is you who were created by the British and protected by America.” And he went on, “I am an internationalist leader and the dean of Arab rulers and the King of African Kings, and the Imam of Muslims, and my international stature does not permit me to descend to any other level. Thanks.” Gaddafi then walked out and visited the local (and superlative) museum of Islamic art. All right, Obama needn’t talk in that comically high-flown idiom, but it would be nice if he stated firmly and unmistakably that he’s the leader of the free world, and therefore that he’s the true internationalist, and as such has no call to bow and scrape to absolute rulers and despots.

Today’s news is that three Pakistanis have just been publicly beheaded in Saudi Arabia, bringing to twenty the number of those executed in that country so far this year. And an American president bows to the man ultimately responsible for that?

re: #418 medaura18586

Lowering your head to allow somebody to place a medal around your neck is nowhere near the equivalent of a subservient bow to a Sovereign as part of a formal greeting. What Bush did was nothing more than every Olympic athlete does who wins a medal. They make it easy for the presenter to accomplish their task. If you can find video of Bush bowing in similar circumstances then by all means show it and he will get the same condemnation. I doubt you'll find such a video for had he done what Obama did, the Media would have killed him.

422 medaura18586  Wed, Apr 8, 2009 5:03:33pm

re: #421 thebigolddog

I thought so too, until I consulted the dictionary and found out that the definition of "bow" does not permit such subtle differentiations. A bow is a bow is a bow. Bush's offense in compounded by the moral legitimacy bestowed on the House of Saud by his acceptance of their medal. Obama's was a typical non-bow bow... something he could backpedal from, a subtle gesture with some room for deniability.

In any case, don't you see how sophomoric splitting hairs on the semantic extremes of what constitutes a "true bow" is? Don't we more substantial things to blast this guy over?

423 path  Wed, Apr 8, 2009 5:07:40pm

Bowing is a sign of deference; it confers honor to the recipient of the bow. The bow-er is saying to the bow-ee, "you're a person of great importance." The O saying he didn't bow is laughable - he was close to a 90 degree angle.

As far as Bush receiving a medal from the Saudi king, well, that's a big disappointment, but hardly a right angle.

About the bowing...

Yes, Obama did bow. As a matter of fact, it was an exceptionally obsequious bow, unbecoming and inappropriate for the President of the United States of America.

Did Bush "go native" and hold hands with a Saudi Prince? Yep, he sure did. I suppose it would have been better had he reared back in disgust and punched him while at the same time asking to use Saudi airbases. Yeah, that's a winning idea.

In the world of diplomacy, things aren't as black and white for the President as they are for the average Joe sitting in his room tapping on a keyboard. Both men were making a point and using the media to carry their message. Bush's message was that the USA was friends to the KSA. Obama's message was probably intended to convey deep respect for the Saudis but it didn't go over well with many Americans.

Obama definitely bowed, his head went below the Saudi King's as he bent forward, so one can't say that he was stooping down to be at his level. I have only seen the picture of Bush receiving the medal, so it is hard for me to judge, although if someone shorter than you is hanging a medal around your neck, I can't see how it could be done without lowering your head. Does any video exist where Bush is bowing, or a picture of him with his head at more than a slight incline?
If so, then I don't like that either. We don't bow to our president, our president should never bow to anyone either, for any reason.

Obama has greeted short people before. Did he appear to bow to them when he shook hands?

Plenty of pics of Obama shaking the hands of shorter people, including children. The only time I see anything approaching a bow is when Obama is standing and the other person is sitting down.

Shaking the hand of a 10 year old child:

Greeting a seated woman whose hand he can easily shake without bending down.

Definitely a bow. Borderline curtsy. :D Spinning it as anything but a bow is clearly maximum obfuscation.

469 infidel4ever  Thu, Apr 9, 2009 12:04:36am

Obama definitely NOT bowing to Queen Elisabeth

I think Queen Elisabeth is even less tall than than King Abdullah, so there goes that argument. O well, he probably did not feel he had to pander to the head of state of one of the USA's allies.

And yes, Bush was just as bad a panderer to the oil ticks. I wonder if the One has scheduled his sword dance yet.

470 JAT  Thu, Apr 9, 2009 3:29:45am

If it looks like a duck, walks like a duck, and sounds like a duck - it's a duck.

So what ever you think - try it from the other side - what did King Abdullah think it was? From the smile - I think he saw and heard the duck.

..."said an Obama aide, who spoke on the condition of anonymity."

I suspect we will hear plenty of lies in the next four years from Obama aides who will speak on the condition of anonymity. Obama as well as more than a few in his cupboard have shown they have no problem lying at home or abroad...with alarming regularity.

472 kernschatten  Thu, Apr 9, 2009 6:39:41am

If you've seen the vid on hot air regarding this article, it is definitely a bow. He comes up, extends right hand and bows (left hand is cross his waist), then he goes into the double handshake.

Bush doing it also has no bearing on trying to say Obama didn't. Neither should have done it, and the white house abjectly lying about it IS a big issue.

473 princetrumpet  Thu, Apr 9, 2009 6:50:45am

Does anyone care that Bush bowed in order to receive a medal that was being placed around his neck?

474 Land Shark  Thu, Apr 9, 2009 6:58:01am

Who cares if Obama bowed to the Saudi king? I'm more concerned about how he's bending over and dropping his pants in front of the Iranians, North Koreans, Russians, Chinese, etc., etc.

475 coloradobuff  Thu, Apr 9, 2009 7:03:54am

I'm surprised the White House would even bother with a response on this one. The bow looked bad enough, but to then lie about it is even more ridiculous. (There is at least one video I've seen that leaves little doubt that it was intended as a bow.) The administration apparently doesn't think much of the intelligence level of the average American.

Does the bow show some kind of subservience to the Saudis? I'm not sure. At the least, I believe our President doesn't think things through beforehand, such as he did with the Special Olympics comment. That's not a great quality for a President.

476 dauntlessone  Thu, Apr 9, 2009 8:31:02am

This reminds me of how my 13 year old lies about the dumbest things and therefore, loses credibility on the bigger things. Why lie about something so obviously found out to be untrue?

note to Obama Administration: Tell the truth, take your lumps, and move forward.

477 Bonk  Thu, Apr 9, 2009 8:33:51am

If you watch the video, it's OBVIOUS he bowed. No way to spin it, it's pretty clear. Is it a big deal? Well, depends. I'd question why he kowtowed to Abdullah but not to the Queen in England, but that might not be PC.

Personally, I'd prefer that our President dealt with foreign heads of state as equals - with respect and dignity being preserved on both sides. If King Abdullah had bowed BACK - no problem. He didn't. Bowing indicates respect AND submission to higher authority when only one party does it. An equal bow from both parties indicates mutual respect - without the submission.

478 libertyvista  Thu, Apr 9, 2009 8:41:34am

I'm against screaming about it, and I agree that it should be measured in context of our generally mistaken relationship with the Saudis and the boneheaded gestures of other Presidents, but, regardless, between the picture and the video we have a bow. The significance is that, combined with gifts of self-aggrandizing Ipods and unplayable DVDs, we're left to wonder what kind of avoidable mistakes of an extremely serious nature are being made by the same staff and President that made these. It's also significant that the Obama people are denying that it happened, while at the same time admitting it happened by explaining it was due to a difference in height.

President Obama Bows

479 maurice  Thu, Apr 9, 2009 9:06:53am

Q: How is it possible for ANYONE to watch that video and say it's not a bow?

A: It is im.

Whose lyin' eyes you gonna believe?

480 shwaiutah  Thu, Apr 9, 2009 9:21:44am

The bow issue is pretty silly, just like Ms. Obama deigning to touch the queen. Who cares. If he had bowed to the PM of Japan no one would care (it being a cultural thing and all.)
But the bigger issue is why would an aide say he didn't bow when it was obvious he did? The unnecessary lie is reminiscent of Clinton.

re: #463 Charles

This kook has been out of town for awhile. At any rate, it's actually a pretty well known tactic in the Middle East. Royalty, dictators, and those who fancy themselves your "betters" will extend their hand but keep the elbow close to the hip forcing the other party to lean into the hand-shake. It may not look like much to those of us here in the West but a picture does indeed tell a thousand words and speaks volumes in the ME. Whether Obama was duped by this tactic or was just really excited to shake his hand is a small matter ... all things considered.

482 gulfloafer  Thu, Apr 9, 2009 5:16:35pm

re: #481 gulfloafer

... but that was a straight up bow.

483 Cato the Elder  Thu, Apr 9, 2009 7:19:15pm

The Bush family has been tongue-kissing the Saudis for decades. Tongue and ass. Hand and foot. Sword dancing, knife prancing, soft-shoeing, prince-wooing, fat-chewing, war-brewing. All for oil. And the greater glory of Crawford and Kennebunkport.

Obama is in great company here. He and Bush probably had a secret email exchange comparing notes on Abdullah's breath mints and condom brand.
