Amit Ghate: Attacks on LGF Are Revealing

Some nice words from Amit Ghate: Attacks on LGF are Revealing.

Though I don’t have time to follow it as closely as I’d like to, I think Charles Johnson’s Little Green Footballs is one of the best (non-objectivist) blogs out there. He’s for free speech and strongly against Islamic totalitarianism — and wants the Republicans to rally around those issues. But in order to be on the side of the rational, he adamantly thinks the Republicans must drop creationism (and its modern variant, intelligent design) and any other fundamentalist religious views, as well as to denounce the irrational “fringe” views that so many in the party hold (like being against vaccines, engaging in conspiracy theories, etc.). He’s also very honest, and thus won’t let Republicans criticize the Democrats for things they too have done (for example Bush bowed to the Saudi King just as Obama recently did). Lately he’s suggested that Glenn Beck’s apocalyptic and over-the-top sensationalism are a disservice to serious Republicans. What have his reasonable views brought him? Vilification from the religious Right, including from nuts like Pam Geller (who really should give up her blog name “Atlas Shrugs” forthwith), and even from Robert Spencer. It’s really quite a sad spectacle.

UPDATE at 4/8/09 6:44:49 pm:

Nice to see the usual anonymous stalkers showing up in the comments for Amit’s post! I think it’s great that you guys have such empty lives that you can find nothing better to do than monitor LGF, go to blogs that I link, and post weird hateful comments about me. That’s why I created those little “Charles” simulacra that live inside your heads and command you to hang on my every word. I hope the voices aren’t too loud.

I have been reminding my Republican friends who are upset about Obama bowing (or whatever he did) that not only did Bush sword-dance with the Saudis, he bowed as well.

Not that it makes it right, but it's important not to put inconvenient truths down the memory hole.

7 albusteve  Wed, Apr 8, 2009 3:32:42pm

it's always a good fight but I wonder if it's a losing battle...the face of the GOP is rapidly changing....are there enough dedicated conservatives to turn it around?....conservatism is dying I think

But a correct sentiment nonetheless. I'm reading the book now (am ashamed not to have read it earlier, it's been on my shelf for years), and cannot find any comparison between the positive characters in the novel, and the gal who runs the 'blog by that name.

Yup, I know. It was just a typo (it was on the original Ghate post). The meaning doesn't change either way.

You can't excuse Bush & then blame Obama for similar conduct.
However if you did break bad on Bush for it, then I would say that Obama is fair game.
It is really not getting a lot of play anyway & the White House is silly to comment.

I think conveying the fact that this country's leaders have been kowtowing to Saudis for a long time and still are, and it needs to stop, is just as important if not moreso than just pointing out Bush did it too.

I think this is a conflict of basic visions, of fundamental ideology. Some people think it's not an issue to align with neo-nazis. Some people think it's not a problem to promote conspiracy theories.

And then there is the Derangement Syndrome of some- so knee-jerk in their desire to be at odds with Charles that they'll take the opposite position just to spite him, and all without even considering the ramifications of their contrary position.

I am a right of center Independent. I see good guys and bad guys on both sides of the political aisle. I voted for McCain, but was no big fan of Palin. She's a quality individual, but her potential is more "regional" than "national." Although if she became one of Alaska's senators, I think that would be just fine. My favorite senator is Joe Lieberman, but I disagree with him on plenty of issues. I admire him because he showed courage and stood up against his own party when he felt the party was wrong. But since President Obama "pardoned" him after the election, Senator Joe has been strangely silent. I wrote to him and chastised him for it, asking if his silence on the fiscal insanity was a payback to the President for his post-election kindness. My point is this: you can disagree with someone you like, but it doesn't mean you have to stop liking them. And for those who can't handle Charles' (and LGF's) brand of pragmatism, they probably should just find a new place to hang out. Because for me, blind partisanship is something to be avoided. Partisans see problems in terms of political opportunities, rather than something to be solved for the good of everyone.

Charles,
I think you are adrift. It is kind of pitiful to post a laudatory blurb about yourself on your own blog. I think you need to find some larger political principles to rally behind in this period of the Obama Euro-socialist regime. You seem to be searching around for direction. I think the ideals of free speech and rationalism are great, but how about also self-determination, self-reliance, loyalty to allies (like Israel), honesty and integrity in government. I suggest you pick your own values and refocus the LGF blog more broadly on those principles. That is what conservatism is actually all about. Principles. Leave the petty arguments with people about honorifics among politicians and royals to network TV, tabloids, etc.

Inside America, it might be a good idea to remind conservatives of Bush's faults.

But one shouldn't forget that much of the rest of the world is cheering about America having a President who is bent on apologizing to Muslims for America having hurt their feelings by fighting for the civilization of the free world. And what's more, Obama's promises to "reach out to Muslims" aren't just lip service. Obama has already changed American policy on Iran, on Israel, on Saudi Arabia (whose "peace initiative" he praised) - and this is going to be much worse in the future.

Bush pandered to the Saudis while Obama really believes America must give up its leading position in the world and give ground to Islam. This is why this bow worries so many people, and rightfully so. And this is why it isn't comparable to Bush's sword dancing and hand holding, as ugly as they were.

re: #91 Sharmuta

I think this is a conflict of basic visions, of fundamental ideology. Some people think it's not an issue to align with neo-nazis. Some people think it's not a problem to promote conspiracy theories.

And then there is the Derangement Syndrome of some- so knee-jerk in their desire to be at odds with Charles that they'll take the opposite position just to spite him, and all without even considering the ramifications of their contrary position.

It's quite pathetic, really.

...well maybe, but is this really about Charles? I'd like to think it's more like people of like minds read his blog and agree with him rather than subscribe to his blog like it's some ideology in it's own right, like you see with the Kos.
Normally the comments on here are so far Right I find them pretty alienating, so I find some of these threads to be kinda odd. When I posted a complaint about Alex Jones being used as a source on some Conservative blogs, nobody really replied or expressed similar outrage. I'm a disenfranchised Democrat though, so to me, it just seems like everyone has various people they're aligned with and trust, and there's some backbiting going on. The Atlas Shrug situation doesn't strike me as in the same league as this Beck stuff for example.

OT:

I was thinking of a good movie for the Holidays when it occurred to me to suggest folks consider watching 'It's A Wonderful Life'.

I know what you're thinking. "That's a Christmas movie!"

I think it's a year round LIFE affirming movie, an incredible romance, and a story of how a woman's love can make all the difference in a man's life.

This weekend, I'm going to watch it.

I watched Mr. Smith Goes to Washington on a whim over Christmas. While I couldn't help thinking of Obama and the Chicago machine at various points it really lifted my spirits. It was so nice to hear Jimmy Stewart extoll the virtues of the American political system. And Jean Arthur was to die for.

Are you trying to get flushed? I think you'll succeed.

For polite discourse? That would be ironic, don't you think? I'm just suggesting that focusing on Obama's bow as a topic is a low water mark for the blog, and that a refocusing on larger matters in a coherent way is in order, IMHO. Also, I must say that 7,000,000 comments of the "me, too" sort on these pages are not so impressive.
I also assume Charles is able to speak for himself, and can speak to his own thought process and philosophy. If he "flushes" me, it will unfortunately be very telling about his tolerance for free speech and discussion. I hope he would not do so, but that he might respond substantively.

183 Wild Knight  Wed, Apr 8, 2009 4:34:04pm

Well, Charles is certainly maintaining sanity on the blogsphere. The amount of crap out there is blinding and I've often mulled giving up reading the ranting that passes for commentary on so many sites - including the MSM of course. LGF however has managed to steer clear of both the Scylla and Charybdis of the "left" and "right" and preserves the common sense which has become so lacking nowadays.

Struggling US towns print their own currency

Communities across America are bypassing the dollar and creating their own currencies in an attempt to help both consumers and businesses struggling in the recession.

The idea, borrowed from the Depression era when the currencies were known as "scrip", is designed to boost local spending and keep money circulating within the community.

Typically, a group of businesses print a new currency which shoppers can then buy at a discount – typically one dollar will cost 90 to 95 cents – and spend at full value with participating companies.

/wow, they've invented . . . GIFT CERTIFICATES!

And LGF exposed that on a front page post where it was roundly criticized.

Obviously I'm aware of that and acknowledging this.

Look, take a close look at what happened in Israel, where there is no real effective Right as a result of trying hard to appear rational and moderate. The hawks, and unrelenting ideologues were marginalized, and the leftist agenda won out to the point where even it's opposition is still handing them their goals which will likely destroy their country. I see a similar thing happening here by putting the Fox anchors, who may deserve criticism, in the same boat as extremists.

Anybody remember when Rush Limbaugh went after Pat Buchanan during the NAFTA debate (after Buchanan went all-in for protectionism)? I can't find a link but I distinctly remember Rush took a lot of grief from so called conservatives who made up the Pitchfork Pat Brigade.

That situation isn't perfectly analogous to this debate but at the time I would have been surprised if serious people had said that in a couple years Buchanan would cease to be seen as a real conservative by serious conservatives. I anticipate the same fate certainly for Geller, Spencer and, unless he can regain his foothold in reality, Glenn Beck.

re: #6 Athens Runaway

I have been reminding my Republican friends who are upset about Obama bowing (or whatever he did) that not only did Bush sword-dance with the Saudis, he bowed as well.

Not that it makes it right, but it's important not to put inconvenient truths down the memory hole.

I haven't read many of the comments on the bowing threads, but I think anyone upset about Obama's bow is probably being consistent because iirc most people around here were not happy with Bush when he did the sword dance, begged the Saudis to pump more oil, held hands with Abdullah, etc. We were mad about the Dubai ports issue, browbeating Israel, Laura's wearing an abaya and scarf in Saudi, and Bush's pal Bandar's antics.

If someone is pissed off about Obama's bow (only a day or two after he met the Queen of England and did not bow), chances are it's only because someone's being consistent in their revulsion at American presidents kowtowing to Saudis.

Another thing: Bush did kowtow, but his record wasn't only one of bending to Islamists and Arab nations. He also invaded Afghanistan and Iraq, and has been hunting terrorists in other places like Yemen and S.E. Asia. So, he did some good things, but his recored vis a vis Islam ended up being somewhat mixed. Obama, on the other hand, has been completely in thrall to them and has nothing to suggest that we could even hope for a mixed record in that area.

Maybe some people were going too far in what they thought should result from Obama's bow (impeachment), but were that many people really suggesting that extreme of a response? I don't know, I haven't read enough other blogs or enough comments here, but my shallow perusal hasn't shown me much to suggest that many people are calling for impeachment and other things like that.

I disagree that conservatism is dead. Go see the link [Link: mediamatters.org...] and watch them try to spin the exit polling in 2008. Americans are center-right. You talk to them, and they stand on the right of free speech, gun control, abortion, gay marriage, and the panoply of issues that exist out there. Most of them do not mind evolution being taught, but want "equal time" for other concepts which may include "creationism".

To clarify, I think extreme views serve a purpose, and we shouldn't confuse those with that of neo nazis who obviously should be villainized.

I, too, agree that extreme views deserve a hearing. ONE hearing.

It was, up to 2002 or so, considered a fringe view that Woodrow Wilson was a racist, a totalitarian, and an inspiration to fascists. This is now accepted fact. Chalk one up to Goldberg.

But if what the fringe types say turns out to contradict the facts established anywhere else, if they're not willing to correct their assertions in light of new evidence, and if they then start with insults and conspiracy-theorising: then they've used up their hearing and they don't get another.

Yes, the irony is that television -- arguably the most 'instant' of the media -- is typically last to any major development. Most big stories are broken -- again, ironically -- by newspapers, arguably the 'slowest' of the news media.

Of course, once TV gets its lens in focus, nothing beats watching live while a murderous thug rolls down the 405 in his white Bronco.

Sure. And you see how well those to the right of all these issues REALLY helped in this past election and 2004. Not.

I'm not suggesting mealy-mouthing our principles like McCain, but you far right guys are going to kill our party.

And the world is NOT young. It's old. Billions of years. Evolution is not a concept. It's a scientific fact. Creationism IS a concept based on the literal reading of Genesis which has no place in the science classroom.

Speaking of lawyers, Iowahawk says no more lawyers in the Obama Administration or the car industry. In fact, Iowahawk AKA Dave Burge thinks he should run the car industry.

[Humor]

Iowahawk for Car Czar.

[Pictures of cars with scantly clad women in them]

Just look at what I bring to the table:

1. I am not a law professor.

2. Unlike nearly every other moron giving advice to Detroit, I actually know how to build a car.

As such, I realize the industry is not suffering from a lack of law professors -- it is suffering from a lack of imagination. They gave us cup holders and electric seat warmers when we wanted angel fur and bubble tops. They pushed micro-clown cars and hybrids when the market was rife for chromed 8-deuce Chrysler Hemis. Well, Bucko, all that outmoded thinking is going to end during the reign of Czar Dave. Saving the American auto industry is going to be a big job, but I won't be doing it alone. I have already appointed my own shadow Council of Automotive Advisors, a select group of successful auto manufacturers whose qualifications appear after the jump. Many are close personal friends of mine, and I can attest to their patriotism, integrity, ingenuity, and wonderful lack of law degrees.

See: Iowahawk's council of automotive advisers

I don't think LGF is attempting to be a comprehensive news source anyway.... in fact, most posts do link to the kind of news sources some people claim to be rejecting. Just something to keep in mind. Anyway, at the end of the day I think we're all on the same page, and strive for integrity.

This is not good:

The Evolution Trap
by Ken Blackwell

Crucial presidential debates are coming soon. They can be a subtle problem, especially when it comes to evolution. Often reporters ask questions that are designed to do irreparable harm to conservative candidates. That was exactly the intent of the evolution question in the first GOP candidate forum on MSNBC on May 3.

On that occasion, Senator McCain was asked if he believed in evolution. He said he did, explaining that he sees God in the majesty of the Grand Canyon.

Senator McCain is not the first person inspired to thoughts of God by the sight of the Grand Canyon. However, that has nothing to do with biological evolution. That’s okay, because the question wasn’t about biological evolution.

But the trap was set. The other nine candidates were asked to raise their hand if they did not believe in evolution.

Three hands were raised. Seven candidates kept their hands down.

The problem is this: Evolution is not merely a yes or no question. Consider this scenario.

What if the request had been, “Raise your hand if you don’t believe in abortion.”?

Liberal candidates would have argued that the question was unfair and biased. Here’s an easy-to-imagine response from a liberal candidate:

“Well let me explain. Some people believe in abortion on demand, some believe that abortion should never be permitted. Most people don’t fall into either camp. What about someone who is generally pro-life, but believes abortion should be permitted in cases of rape or incest? What about people who believe abortions should be legal early in a pregnancy, yet oppose late-term and partial-birth abortion.

A yes or no question on abortion simplifies the issue. It doesn’t give us a chance to explain our position. When we raise or don’t raise our hand, viewers have no idea of the complexity of the issue. All this does is create confusion, resulting in the exact opposite of what public debates are supposed to achieve.”

Here is what I believe the best answer would have been to the evolution question: “I can’t answer until you expand upon your question. Are you asking about microevolution or macroevolution?”

This keeps conservatives out of the trap. This forces a discussion of the issue. The moderator can only proceed by saying, “Can you explain?”, in which case the candidate should continue:

“Well, if you mean microevolution, where an organism adapts to its environment with the flexibility inherent in its DNA, then yes I believe in that; we see it every day in nature. But if you mean macroevolution, where mutations stack on one another to create entirely new organ systems and transform one species into a totally different species, then I, along with many scientists, have serious issues with that theory.”

That answer advances public discourse and a candidate can deliver it in thirty seconds. When someone says they do not believe in “evolution,” the common rebuttal is to point to microevolution and charge the candidate with being an anti-science religious zealot. But when people say “evolution,” most are referring to macroevolution. By forcing the terms “microevolution” and “macroevolution” into the debate, a candidate deflects the attack and reframes the debate. Discussing the numerous scientists who have concerns with macroevolution only adds gravity and authority to the candidate’s position.

Polls show about half of Americans have problems with Darwinian macroevolution. Such a position may not be en vogue with the mainstream media, but it does bolster the weight of the pro-microevolution candidate’s argument.

Part 2

The Evolution Trap
by Ken Blackwell

There are scientists who echo the concerns of a vast number of Americans. Models like the doctrine of irreducible complexity explain that certain organs, such as the eye, require dozens of different components, each made of billions of cells, all working together to function as a whole. It argues such organs cannot evolve over time, they only benefit the creature at one hundred percent capacity. A 99% evolved eye is useless. This model suggests organs must be entirely present and perfectly fit together or they do not work. Modern theories of macroevolution have no explanation for how such organs came about.

Regardless of what you believe, that’s a fair point for a rational person to make that does not rely on any religious belief. It’s a scientific concern, not a religious objection.

Yes or no questions on evolution only serve to make conservatives appeal to one part of the electorate by alienating others. It’s “gotcha” politics, pure and simple. They serve no purpose other than helping liberals get elected.

I’d like to give the questioners the benefit of the doubt. Maybe they didn’t realize how unfair the question was. It’s possible they don’t understand this issue themselves.

Some on the Left can still be so blinded by their political ideology and opposition to conservative Christian beliefs that they ask such unproductive questions in order to promote a clearly secular agenda.

Televised forums of presidential candidates should be about more. The country deserves better.

* US navy destroyer Bainbridge reported arriving on scene

World=UN, means NOTHING!

To end it will take ordnance coming off of US assets.

The problem we have from the left is that the illiterati shout down any idea they don't like, rather than trying to discuss the issues. Whenever I hear someone who won't discuss an issue, I tend to believe that they know little about it.

The point, sir, is that many of us have already been part of the ad nauseum discussions on the "issues" and have, as Byron would say, "been knocked on the head for our labors". When the same canards and prevarications are trotted out by a different set of charlatans, of course our temper is going to be a bit short. Whether it's the Creationist issue or that FDR committed treason in letting Pearl Harbor be attacked, we have heard the "arguments" and "evidence" and have been able to discount it--again and again.

It is not a question of whether we don't "like" an idea. We're trying to shout down those in our ideological tent who would make us all look like fools. We're trying to teach people--not brainwash them. Only, when we try, we are branded with such unflattering epithets as "nazi", "racist", "fascist" or worse by the very people who are peddling the intellectual snake oil in the first place.

No one here would dare to tell you what to think. We would dare to tell you where you are wrong and hopefully steer you to the information where you might learn more.

there is no issue to discuss w/ creationists. there is no debate to entertain.
i.d cannot tell us how life evolved over time. it brings no facts, information or evidence to the study.
its purpose is to debunk evolution and offer creationist 'belief' as the answer.

to even consider allowing religious belief to be on an equal footing, as an answer, is absurd.

Not far.

The problem is that Russia could actually do things that need doing, like dispossessing the pirates. I can't see Obama doing that. The pirate liars are not worth taming and simply annihilating them is not acceptable. We need a ground force that will actually be allowed to get the job done.

Regarding Noah....lets avoid whether the story is true or not and concentrate on what that story in the Bible really says. Later in the Book of Roman's Paul tackles the same issue.....can you hold someone to go to hell if they have never had a chance to hear the Word? The whole point of the story of Noah is that, if true, there is NO ONE on the planet who is not descended from people who knew about God. It is basically one long and charming...."ignorance of the law is no excuse" argument.

On can absolutely hold the belief that the literal facts of the story are not true and still believe that God has blown the wind of his existence into all of us.

The problem with that is that the global media would then decry the sinking as proof of "western racism". Our biggest problem, militarily, is PR.

I'll be happy if we can just reach a point where we can discuss issues politely without the personal insults, but I don't expect a meeting of the minds, At least if we can learn how the other side thinks, it makes compromise easier.

MY frikking Aunt was a nun..Loved that woman...But I'm talking serious religious upbringing...

I believe in God...
But..Here is what I don't believe.../ducking sorry../
1.The whole earth was covered by water and just disappeared in some days later..You would be breathing it..walking on it..or something...It doesn't disappear. That water is somewhere and we need to find it..
2. after the flood..there were rainbows. I'm pretty sure God created the Natural laws that we all live by..I'm sure there were Rainbows Billions of years ago..And probably on a lot cooler planets than this one..But i don't think light refraction of 23.5 degrees in water particles was invented a few thousand years ago..call me crazy.

But both girl and boy were glad
'Cause one kid had it worse than that

'Cause then there was this boy whose
Parents made him come directly home right after school
And when they went to their church
They shook and lurched all over the church floor
He couldn't quite explain it
They'd always just gone there

UPDATE 12-Crew regain control of hijacked ship off Somalia
Wed Apr 8, 2009 8:31pm EDT* Crew regain control of hijacked freighter

* Pirates still holding captain in lifeboat, crewman says

* US navy destroyer Bainbridge reported arriving on scene

* Clinton says world must end piracy 'scourge' (Adds report of U.S. Navy on the scene, paragraphs 3-4)

World=UN, means NOTHING!

To end it will take ordnance coming off of US assets.

Pompey solved the pirates problems in the whole Mediterranean in mere months, but we have radio, spy sats, aircraft carriers, cruise missiles, GPS-guided bombs, and the UN.

Hi, Hon. I'm well, and hope you are too. Picked up some Silk Chocolate Soy today based on FBV's recommendation. It's delicious!

I never attended a church in which I was told the Bible had to be read literally, so this whole thing has been a bit strange for me.

As far as your comment, it's true. There is no geological evidence to support a global flood. There is evidence however to support a massive local flood in the Black Sea, and it's a fascinating story of how it was discovered. Would you like to see a program the BBC did on the subject? I can grab the video, if you would like to watch it.

You are very kind..Silk is wonderful..

As the meeting was ending one of the 2 associates opened his yap as they were all about to depart. Can I get a witness ? I would just LOVE to re do that scene with Charles as Tucco and one of the few posters here that feel every time Charles visits a thread and decides to chime in with a comment/opinion of his own in that 'they' have to ditto with a "Yeah, Charles is right and he doesn't have to put up with...ain't that right Charles ? It was the first time I saw the GOP get moving on a issue, and interfering in the most private one I could imagine. It made such a impression on my family that we all wrote down a living will.

That Terri Schiavo thing scared me too. Especially the part where her estranged husband who was living with another woman went against the wishes of her mother and father and had her exterminated. The living will, however, is an excellent idea.

Nope. There is no conflict between religious belief and accepting the reality of evolution accept to those who can't believe in a God capable of creating it.

There are physical laws that govern every aspect of existence. Everything from weather, from conception through death, to how a twig burns or magma melts, to the movement of the galaxies and the individual electrons in every atom of every molecule of everything in existence. The same groundwork created alongside the universe governs evolution.

Creationism means denying the evidence provided for you. It requires turning off the brains given to you by God. The evidence exists. Logically, that evidence was also created by God. Denying evolution is denying something he manifested on Earth. It's a denial of part of his creation.

609 Eagle  Wed, Apr 8, 2009 7:11:46pm

re: #368 TheHistorian

Johnson is no moderate on evolution. He is not just pro-evolution, but he is anti-creation. I don't mind his opinions, and not even freely expressed (it is HIS page) but don't like closed minds who disparage others on any issue. And I view that he does this.
The problem we have from the left is that the illiterati shout down any idea they don't like, rather than trying to discuss the issues. Whenever I hear someone who won't discuss an issue, I tend to believe that they know little about it.

That is just a ridiculous thing to say. Your comment shows that you are nothing more than an electronic age cyber-flasher, exposing your privates to the eyes of good lizards. And we are not impressed with your privates. With all due respect, they are puny and over-hyped.

Anti-creation? Use the proper label. Charles supports rationalism. (not that I speak for Charles) Anyone who makes a claim, must support that claim by fact. The burden of proof is on the proponent of an idea, not upon the listener. There are mountains of evidence in favor of evolution. As far as I know, none for creationism. To come here and say Charles is anti-x, without first proving x yourself... is just ignorant.

I have never met Charles, but I suspect that he will listen to his rational faculty over your exhortations. It's his blog, he doesn't need to accept you r ideas. But you are free to try and prove them. Good luck with that.

re: #451 HelloDare

This guy is advising creationist candidates to pull a lawyerese Bill Clinton (depends upon what the meaning of "is" is...), to obfuscate, equivocate, and outright lie in order to make an anti-science stand seem palatable to pro-science people.

And he invokes the discredited old irreducable complexity canard, with reference to the human eye. He is bioscientifically illiterate, and is busy instructing other bioscientific illiterates how to skate their ignorance by.

618 Ming  Wed, Apr 8, 2009 7:48:54pm

Charles is to be commended for holding on to high standards. Issues of the day are always more complex than they may seem at first glance. I've always been libertarian in outlook (if not in party), uncomfortable with excessive government spending. However, in the current economic crists, I'm willing to consider that Obama's massive spending may be the only way to arrest the free-fall of 600,000 jobs lost every month. We should be able to disagree without becoming disagreeable. If someone has a different opinion from our own, that doesn't mean they're a socialist, a traitor, out to destroy America, or not a natural-born citizen.

#621:

Listen, I'm NOT trying to say anything other than what you feel so STRONGLY about today can change tomorrow. Call it "evolution" of the mind. I'm not judging anyone, their decisions, opinion(s) etc., I type as plain as I possibly can that I am not looking to argue one side ot the other here. I've been reading here forever but have not posted as I am no longer as fired up about anything today as I was even 6 months ago. I'm trying to understand each persons view/opinion. I just asked for a bit of info. so I could be spared the "search" if at all possible. The only reason for this was so I could keep on top of the follow up posts and not be lost in Google Land until 2am. I'm NOT trying to restrict a freakin' thing ! Do whatever the hell you want - its your life not mine. I simply asked for a little info if it was readily available
as it appeared that new info./facts have come to light that may give a bit more insight into the interested parties state of mind at the time - possibly making their positions a bit more outragous given these facts if they were known and then went on to point out that the way one may have felt about a given subject/opinion may change. Do you see the connection between the two ? is it just me ? In other words - IF the plaintiffs had the CAT scans during the hearings and had proof + that there was ZERO brain activity and I/we didn't KNOW this, then we can re evaluate their
"position" with this new knowledge. If they DID NOT have this proof and, from the little i still re call, their position was based solely on the testimony/opinions of "professionals" (who can be hired to testify both pro and con) then evaluate (re evaluate) from this. And, if it is NEW proof/info. then, as I was trying to point out, ones opinion may be altered now these few years later.
My point on "Roe" is, for all I know, her current position (if it hasn't changed again) MAY have derived from the advances made over the past 40 years from ultra sound to the amazing photos/video of the fetus living in the womb - I don't know, I don't really care, just had the thought when I reflected on the CAT scan pix Charles linked to. I'm not really up to speed on the subject, don't know when the C scan pix were done and wonder if they would have impacted those so entrenched if they had them at the time. J_sus my head is FREAKIN POUNDING now ! Nothing like a little friendly exchange of info. ! I don't even know what I just typed or why I'm bothering ! I wasn't taking sides or trying to piss anyone off ! So much for being curious and trying to explain a difficult experience. No matter where you go or who you talk to these days it seems everyone just has to say "shut up old man, no one gives a sh*t about what you went through or what you think". And I'm not whining about it either so don't take this wrong. I just happen to still have very good long term memory and there was a time when people were interested in hearing others experiences and what they learned from them. Then again, maybe I'm deluding myself about the "good old days" too.
Make your own choices and live with 'em. Its what life's about anyhow right ?

"...by claiming that they just might regret making those choices somewhere down the road."

I hope you don't work for for your local "Suicide Hot Line".

Wow, now that was fun. I decided to check my "History" file and noticed that both the 1st and 2nd visits to "Wikipedia" (re: Terry Schiavo link provided by Charles) appeared identical. I checked to see if the Wikipedia page had just been updated. Nope. I discovered though that the "Cool Previews" plug in I have for the Firefox browser and the position of my cursor caused me to see only the page showing the CAT scan pic and nothing else. Its a "hover" type plug in. All embedded links prompt a little blue icon to appear when the cursor hovers anywhere close to it. When the cursor is directly on the blue icon the plug in automatically opens the hyper link embedded in the page. My cursor was positioned just right to cause the link to the sole picture to open before the Wikipedi page from Charles' link had a chance to load. This is a great discovery for me as this isn't the first time this has happened and it always confounded me. Now I know to watch
for this as the only clue that you've been re directed is the top border of the page reads "Cool Previews" instead of 'Mozilla Firefox'. Normally you would have elected to go to the secondary link and would obviously be aware that you are viewing the secondary page BUT, when re directed without your knowledge it can cause confusion. I also now know why there is a Cool Previews setting that can be set to delay the secondary display ! I have it set to instantly react (instant gratification) and no doubt the reason the setting can be adjusted. Hopefully this might help someone else using this same plug in.

Sod off, swampy....you're being awful presumptuous. Do you think taking a massive dump in the middle of your host's (Charles') living room is acceptable behavior or are you just dense?

re: #127 pcalver

Why should I defend myself from cretins who would use profanity to respond to my reasonable message to Charles? I think you are very revealing in your lack of response on the points in the message, rather focusing on ad hominem attacks. I'm no troll here. I have enjoyed much of LGF's work over the past few years. My posts are few, because unlike most posters here, I actually try to have something to say when I write on a blog. I am just politely calling Charles out on a loss of focus and a blog that seems in danger of drifting into oblivion. Again, just my $0.02.
Now see if you can respond without profanity or attacking me personally. Thanks.

No one used profanity. That's taking the Lord's name in vain. Words like fuck, etc., are obscene, not profane.

re: #354 TheHistorian

I disagree that conservatism is dead. Go see the link [Link: mediamatters.org...] and watch them try to spin the exit polling in 2008. Americans are center-right. You talk to them, and they stand on the right of free speech, gun control, abortion, gay marriage, and the panoply of issues that exist out there. Most of them do not mind evolution being taught, but want "equal time" for other concepts which may include "creationism".

Not just NO!, but HELL NO!

/religion of any kind does not belong in science class...

The truth will out, Charles. Eventually the addled opposition will largely see the light and come around and you'll be able to hand out the "I told you so's"

Stick to your guns. And keep your powder dry.

*cackle*

Now buying Charles simulacra from the insane to help facilitate a smoother world takeover for our great lizardoid army!

639 notutopia  Thu, Apr 9, 2009 6:18:51am

Keen observations and nice article from Amit.

....That’s why I created those little “Charles” simulacra that live inside your heads and command you to hang on my every word. I hope the voices aren’t too loud....

Truly laughing out loud! Ah, the glorious power and weakness of the human mind toward suggestion.

ROFLMAO! All TOO REAL Charles!

I sure hope you're right. Another school of thought would say that the only real way to put a stop to the nonsense is to let the folks spouting it have a free hand, let them run everything into the ground. . .proving once and for all the idiocy of their ways. But given the overwhelming historical evidence that man is slow to learn from his mistakes, I'm doubtful that's a very good idea.

Well, I'm a Christian and don't believe in Creationism, but those that do certainly have a right to their opinion, just don't try to impose it on me. I am curious though, since the creation story is in the Old Testament, when did Jews stop believing in the notion that the world was created in 6 days?

642 Tatterdemalian  Thu, Apr 9, 2009 8:41:38am

There is no neocon conspiracy, just as there was no Jewish conspiracy in 1935. There is only objective reality, the scientific method used to reveal its ways, and the simple truth that people who adjust their beliefs to match reality will always be more successful than those who expect reality to bow to their beliefs.

Didn't Bush lower his head to receive a medal from the king, simulating a bow only to receive the medal? Any other time, he simply nodded his head, much in the way the much taller 0bama did with the Queen of England.

"...by claiming that they just might regret making those choices somewhere down the road."

I hope you don't work for for your local "Suicide Hot Line".

Oh great; now we have some nimrod comparing abortion to suicide.

Newsflash, dewde; the woman is alive after the abortion to either regret her decision, or, in the vast majority of cases, not. After a suicide, the principal decision maker isn't still around to second-guess him-herself.
