Totten: Sadr City After the Fall

World • Views: 2,825

Another great piece from Iraq by Michael J. Totten: Sadr City After the Fall.

The way into Sadr City itself was from Combat Outpost (COP) Ford, a one-company base wedged between Sadr City and the adjacent Beida neighborhood. Captains Todd Looney and A.J. Boyes ran the company, and they were two of the friendliest and most hospitable American military officers I had yet met. I stayed up for hours talking to these two in their quarters and never once felt like I was imposing. Their outpost developed an excellent reputation among journalists as a place to be based, and I wished I could have stayed longer.

Looney and Boyes’ company did most of the fighting in Sadr City last year when the Jamilla Market area was purged of militiamen and a three-mile long wall of concrete barriers was erected to keep them from coming back in.

“On our worst day,” Captain Looney said, “we only got eight barriers up. But once we figured out how to do it, we didn’t lose any more people.” Three of his men were killed before they taught themselves how to build a wall under fire without getting blown up or shot. Framed photographs of the dead hung on the wall.

“The Iraqi Army did pretty good, too,” I said. “They did better in both Sadr City and Basra than most people expected,” I said.

“Absolutely,” Captain Boyes said.

Most analysts at the time thought the Mahdi Army would hand the Iraqi Army its ass on a plate. I wasn’t terribly optimistic myself. Purging urban neighborhoods of guerrillas is tough work. First World professional armies often fail. The Iraqis, though, stunned the world.

Building under fire - that sucks.

Essayons.

That’s very good news.

The article is great, and it really points out how big a hand Iran had in the major insurgencies.

Its looking good for Sadr City. The Iraqi government is running the show and its not taking any crap from the Sadr-ists.

And note .. they are cleaning up the area too. Its going to be a wonderful place .. New Baghdad is.

The purpose of the Gold Wall,” Major Mike Humphreys told me earlier, “is to prevent Mahdi Army Special Groups criminals from having access to south Sadr City. On March 25, 2008, 107mm rockets started being launched against the Green Zone in response to the violence that was going on in Basra. There were twelve to fifteen attacks per day on the Green Zone, and these rockets packed a powerful punch. They had big warheads on these things, and were nothing to smirk about. They were being launched from south Sadr City because it’s the limit of the 107mm reach. The rockets were purchased from Iran. We found some stamped with ‘born on’ dates after the fighting began. So we know that these guys were supported by Iran. We know for a fact they were dealing with Iran. The same thing with their EFPs, their explosively-formed penetrators. They’re getting those directly from Iran.”

EFPs are the most terrifying IEDs ever designed. They fire molten copper plates faster than bullets at passing vehicles which cut through Humvees and tanks as though they were Jell-O.

“Do you know who they’re buying them from in Iran?” I said. “Are they buying them from the government?”

“Who knows?” he said. “Maybe if we did know we could do something about it.”

I’d don’t know about wonderful, but it at least will be livable. So will Basra, since the religious parties there got the Bilandic Bounce (voted out for failure to maintain the infrastructure).

Wow. Yet another great dispatch from Michael Totten.

What if more people in America read his articles? We’d be a damn sight better off in this country if more of us read and thoughtfully considered his reports, than if we continued to listen to talking-head pundit-entertainers with microphones, padded so as not to scratch their maple desks, who don’t ever go too far away from their cushy office chairs.

We’re not worthy, but we can make ourselves worthy by reading Michael Totten more and supporting his work.

On the Amit Ghate thread.

I posted a comment about truth……. Someone left a note on my blog in response.

I just read your post over at LGF, #537. You quoted verses dealing with Truth, seemingly in support of the idea that those who teach Young Earth Creationism are “lying for Jesus.”The same Bible you quoted reveals Jesus having complete agreement with the events of Genesis and referencing it as actual history, i.e. God creating them male and female “at the beginning,” that times would come “as they were in the days of Noah, when he prepared the Ark,” etc.Was this same Jesus whom you quote lying when He refered to Genesis some 25 times throughout the Gospels? He said He was the Way, Truth, and Life. I believe He is, do you? If Jesus was wrong about The Beginning, how can we trust Him when He says He is The Way?

Jesus quoted the spiritual reality, not the knowledge of the dead letters.

The idea of leaving stuff at the end of threads is to leave a foul ending to a thread WHICH THEY KNOW no-one except themselves will go back to. That way they can point out how they defended what was TO THEM stuff that was beyond what they could deal with.

Its just the worst of manners, its like the guy who waits till the hot girls are all drunk as skunks before approaching them at the party. Its just not done.

Back to Totten… When I consider what Americans have truly accomplished in Iraq in the last couple of years especially, since the beginning of the surge, I find it to be the great unheralded story of the present day and really wish we had leadership in Washington that was more willing to publicly sing the American service-person’s praises, and point out where on planet Earth Americans’ true greatness can currently be found.

Totten has been consistent with his reports. He tells it like it is….no angle, no agenda, no axe to grind. He lets the story tell itself and does not cloud it up with a bunch of spin. If all reporters did what he as done, the Iraq War would have been over sooner. Instead we got one BS story after another from the MSM, added with the Daily Surrender from the Democrat Congressional Caucus.

If I have learn one thing from Totten’s reports, it is we have one hell of a military. I have read about one competent and capable soldier after another in his reports. They are professionals and doing an incredible job considering what they are dealing with. The reports he has sent back have made me respect our soldiers even more than I already did.

86 realwest  Wed, Apr 8, 2009 9:59:18pm

Thank God for Michael Totten. He is a JOURNALIST.
But this quote from his piece really started making my blood boil:

My Spanish colleague Ramon Lobo from El País in Madrid co-interviewed Major Humphreys with me.

“I think they get them from the Revolutionary Guards,” he said.

“Right,” I said. “Which is, of course, part of the government.”

“According to Iraqi media,” Major Humphreys said, “they’re getting support from the al Quds Force.”

The Quds Force is basically the special forces branch of Iran’s Revolutionary Guards. Its commanders report to “Supreme Leader” Ayatollah Khamenei. Their mission is the arming and training of guerrilla and terrorist organizations around the Middle East – especially in Lebanon, Iraq, and the Palestinian territories.

So Iran continues to wage war on America and her allies. Started in 1979 with the take-over of the American Embassy and the holding of those 54 American citizens hostage for 444 days. Then they enabled Hezbollah to blow up the US Marine Corps. barracks in Lebanon in 1983, killing over 240 US Marines in their cots. And they’ve been funding and arming Hezbollah and Hamas to enable them to wage their war against our strongest ME ally, Israel.
Now we have evidence (we’ve had it even when President Bush was POTUS) that the Iranians have been helping “insurgents” in Iraq to kill Iraqi’s and of course American troops - indeed, we have captured Quds officers alive in Iraq.
And President Obama wants to open up a dialogue with the Iranians. I honestly don’t see what there is to talk about. What can President Obama say “Please stop killing Americans?” Can he make any credible threat to withdraw US Troops from Iraq THROUGH Iran; would he even think of such a thing?

I’m sorry folks but Iran is OUR enemy and has been for thirty years and we have done NOTHING to stop them from killing our citizens or taking them hostage.
Am I the only one who thinks it’s time for some payback - some RETRIBUTION against Iran? Or are thoughts like these too “barbaric” for the “civilized world” to contemplate?

Thank God for Michael Totten. He is a JOURNALIST.
But this quote from his piece really started making my blood boil:

Karma is a bitch. One day, the Iranians will get the bill for all the BS they have been up to since 1979 and it will not be pretty.

Totten and Yon sure have lead interesting lives. Their reporting is so much netter than what you can get out of media outlets with budgets that must dwarf theirs by an astronomical magnitude.

If you follow along you can see how their writing has progressed. Both have become more economical with their words, saying more with less. Both have become better writers in general. They are easily the 2 best reporters working in Iraq/Afghanistan.

Compared to someone poisonous, bar stool dwelling diva bitch like Michael Ware… Well there is no comparison.

Yeah - it’s the type of story that women tell other women. When you see a bunch of women laughing at work - it’s that kind of thing. :D

Really happened to a friend’s husband.

This of course reminds me of the kid at school who had a crush on a girl and went across to her place to ‘relate his love’ to her. Ok so he climbed a trestle that was designed to hold PLANTS not people. Anyway he falls back from the trestle and impales himself in the wrong place. And to stop from being embarrassed .. HE WALKED HOME .. yes .. with half a tree branch up his backside. We took him to hospital the next day .. and the nurses just couldnt stop laughing.

I was lying in bed with a gf and put the bedside candle out (or so I thought). She said that she needed some more light for a bit, so, as a joke, I placed my hands in spellcasting position, and sonorously intoned, “Relight!”

Amazingly, it did!

She freaked.

Even though I quickly figured out that it must not have been completely out, and recaught from an ember, so did I, for a second.

Rawstory: Top conservative blog takes hits for anti-Beck crusade

“Charles Johnson versus a large number of conservative blogs, some of whom call him a ‘former conservative,’ or something,” blogger Dan Riehl observes regarding a pile-up of blogs attacking the honcho behind the popular blog Little Green Footballs.

Other right-leaning bloggers aren’t happy that Johnson has attacked Fox News host Glen Beck for his “over-the-top irresponsible extremism and conspiracy theories.”
….
“Much of the Right side of the blogosphere, as it came to be defined, was never about Conservatism. It was about 9/11 and later fighting a war. The actual politics of several thus aligned blogs and bloggers were never Conservative, so it is inaccurate to call them turn coats now. Argue with them if you wish, debate them, whatever. But don’t call them names they are not.”

When you are too lazy or apathetic to resist evil, negotiating with it seems like a good idea. Iran will continue to poke us in the eye with a stick until we take that stick away (and shove it up their “other body cavity”). Talking with the Mullahs like Obama wants will do nothing but give them credibility and allow them to go full steam ahead with their nuclear plans.

The world will let this happen because the world does not care. I wonder if they will care when WWIII starts because the mad mullahs send off a nuke to Israel or the USA?

re: #93 jcm Hey jcm! From your lips to God’s ears.
I’ve been hearing about a restless, young, proud of their persian heritage group of Iranians who one day will over throw the Mad Mullahs in Teheran for quite some time now.
I don’t honestly think the civilized world can wait very much longer for them to give necktie parties to the Mullahs. And as the clock keeps ticking towards Januray 20, 2013, Russia and increasingly China are actively arming, aiding and abetting the Mullah’s own Revolutionary Guards - to the point where they are now considered virtually invulnerable.
You remember how invulnerable Hussein’s vautned Republican Guards were don’t you? Our military just cut ‘em to shreds. But in four more years, with continuing support from Russia (ok,techically through Belarus but EVERYONE knows it’s really Russia) and China, they may indeed be more formidable than we expect. So many, many more Americans will be killed by them while we dawdle and scratch our heads and wonder “what can we possibly do about Iran.”

Close. Timothy LaHaye started the Council for National Policy in 1981, and he brought Skousen (Beck’s intellectual grandfather) onboard, among others. This and other religious groups carried the light, so to speak, for the Birchers while the JBS organization was ostracized from most of political life.

While such religious groups don’t follow the Birch line 100%, a surprisingly large bleed over of doctrine does occur.

Indeed, while many Lizards may not know it, some of their favorite chants and doctrines were standard Bircher fare (e.g., UN out of US, US out of UN, etc.)

It is all a big sordid mess of reactionary religiosity.

That was a loooooooooooooong report by Totten! In strictly honest style, he just reports what he sees and hears, and doesn’t draw a lot of definitive conclusions. But just about everything in the report doubly confirms what I wrote late last year:

The Iraq War is over.

In fact, since the day I wrote that essay, all I’ve ever seen is more confirmations that it’s true. As I wrote in the essay: This war is over. If, in the future, new fighting breaks out (doubtful, but possible), it will be part of a new conflict.

Note especially this part of Totten’s essay:

EFPs are the most terrifying IEDs ever designed. They fire molten copper plates faster than bullets at passing vehicles which cut through Humvees and tanks as though they were Jell-O.

“Do you know who they’re buying them from in Iran?” I said. “Are they buying them from the government?”

“Who knows?” he said. “Maybe if we did know we could do something about it.”

This is an act of war against the US by Iran.

Can anyone explain to me why we are not kicking Iran’s ass at this very moment?

There is a setting in the WinXP desktop configuration that allows you to show only settings that the monitor will work with. If you have an LCD, having that turned on can block access to some settings, such as the 800x600 setting you desire since the LCDs work best at their native resolution. I can’t give a step by step to get to it since I am on my Vista machine right now, but that might be preventing you from selecting what you want.

re: #137 Desert Dog Well, again excepting the fact that Obama is our President, I think Iran believes it has no enemies to fear, so their conduct (they were reported to be working with the North Korean’s on the launch of that rocket) reflects that.
And I truly don’t blame Obama for that. GWB, as much as I liked him and prefer him over Obama for other reasons, did nothing about Iran. Nothing at all.
I think folks really just hope that this is all a bad dream and they’ll awake from it and the world will be fine.
But we Visigoths and the Israelis and the Japanese know this is not a dream, this is reality. Evil people do walk the earth and it’s HARD to confront Evil head on. And, according to Dusty vets link upthread, most Americans polled, don’t want to take Evil head on.
And it’s all the more incomprehensible to folks like you and me that other Americans seem to not care one whit if other Americans are killed, or held hostage, or if Israel has major problems remaining a viable democratic haven for Jews around the world.

What was the polling numbers last year? I’m pretty sure they were close and most Americans didn’t want to take any military action against Iran. The DOD also made statements regarding a 3rd front with an already stressed military fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan. So we had the DOD saying — not at this time. This occurred from or around 2007.

Russia has been protesting any action against Iran along the way. Not unlike what they did in Hanoi, they have Russian consultants placed within nuclear development site in Iran. This means that any strike against Iran at a nuclear facility would result in some Russian casualties.

I went into safe mode, which comes up with the appearance settings NY Nana wants. Come back into regular mode and we are back to the high resolution and not able to change it.

I am going to try a system restore now. Thanks every one for your help.

Hope it works out.

Ok, NY Grandpa. I hope it works.

re: #207 Gus 802

And what does the screen look like? Really small with a large black border?

The desktop looks normal, but all the icons are very small and hard to read.

Did you try the right click on the desktop and properties that I mentioned earlier?

How to change the screen resolution in Windows XP

1. Minimize all applications so that you can see the desktop.
2. Right-click anywhere on the desktop background (not on an icon).
3. In the resulting pop-up menu, choose Properties. This will open the Display Properties dialog box.
4. In the Display Properties dialog box, select the Settings tab.
5. In the Settings tab, in the lower left corner, is a “slider” which allows you to change the screen resolution.
6. Slide this control to the left to decrease the screen resolution and to the right to increase the resolution. The resolution will only change in preset steps usually starting with 640x480, 800x600, 1024x768 and getting increasingly larger. IT is recommending at least 1024x768 unless you have a specific reason to use a lower resolution.
7. Try changing the resolution one step at a time. Click the Apply button to actually change the screen resolution.
8. If you see a message asking if you want to keep the new settings, click the Yes button within 15 seconds. (If you don’t want to keep the changed screen resolution, either click the No button or wait 15 seconds and the change will be reset to what it was before.)
9. Keep sliding the resolution control one step at a time until you are satisfied. (Repeat steps 7 & 8.)
10. When done, click the OK button to close the Display Properties dialog box.

As Flash Player does not appear in Add/remove, I had to to download an un-install program from Adobe and then re-installed the flash player. Videos are now working. YEAH! and Thanks so much.

re: #202 Killgore Trout

In case you’re still around; Have you heard of Nesara before? They sound like the kind of group you might have encountered before.

I first discovered them here attending a Tea Party. The I found out here that some of the Tea Party organizers are involved in the group.

Ever heard of them before?

Never heard of it/them before. But, reading your links, I credit my continuing sanity to the fact that I’ve never heard of them. Complete cuckooland.

I see a lot fo references to these “Tea Party” things around, but have only the vaguest notion as to what they are. From what I can gather, it is conservatives protesting in public against the Obama economic plan — right?

A word of advice, people: Protests only invite trouble. They inevitably attack the fringe looneys — as I have spent my blogging career documenting. Protests at best will fizzle and go unnoticed; at worst, they will get publicity, and the worst/nuttiest among you will get the attention. Any fantasies of a big and respectable “mass movement” visible on the streets are delusional.

A better plan is to remain the Silent Majority.

I have tried doing that. It just will not re-set, even one setting at a time. I am going to try a system restore now.

NY Grampa did a system restore, and all is as it should be! Thank you and all the Lizards who were so helpful.

We are off to sleep, as it is 3:30 AM here, and we will be having another Seder tonight! Everyone was here tonight, and the 2 1/2 year old grandson didn’t want to go home! It’s the first time he sat there and said he was going to stay with Nana and Grampa. Meany daughter and son in law did not agree. It seems that since we have to get a real bed for him, as we still have his crib. When he heard that? Back to Brooklyn without a whimper!

The 6 and 8 year old granddaughters were just great. The 6 year old and her parents came here from another Seder for desert. Everyone forgot to bring a camera, darn it!

Sweet dreams, and g’nite, all! Lizards are the best!

Great. Glad that worked. That’s what I do sometimes when my computer gets the rare brain fart. See my #149.

Long time no see, Zombie! I’ve telnetted to a unix system in the states to defeat a local http block (stingy commercial provider at the airport), so I’m now surfing LGF on a green TTY display. Nice!
