The Iowahawk Council of Automotive Advisors

Humor • Views: 2,027

It’s obvious, really. The one man who can save America’s comatose auto industry courageously steps forward: iowahawk: The Iowahawk Council of Automotive Advisors.

When it comes to naming a savior for the American car biz, I think we can do better. And by “we,” I of course mean “me.” And so, today, I would like to nominate Yours Truly as Grand Exalted Poobah for National Automotive Strategy.

I know what you’re saying: “hey Dave, didn’t you recently crap out in your attempts at the White House and the Illinois Senate?” Okay, if you want to get technical about it, but now we’re finally talking about a government job I’m vaguely qualified for. And if I can lower my expectations, shouldn’t you? Just look at what I bring to the table:

  • I am not a law professor.
  • Unlike nearly every other moron giving advice to Detroit, I actually know how to build a car.

As such, I realize the industry is not suffering from a lack of law professors — it is suffering from a lack of imagination. They gave us cup holders and electric seat warmers when we wanted angel fur and bubble tops. They pushed micro-clown cars and hybrids when the market was rife for chromed 8-deuce Chrysler Hemis. Well, Bucko, all that outmoded thinking is going to end during the reign of Czar Dave. Saving the American auto industry is going to be a big job, but I won’t be doing it alone. I have already appointed my own shadow Council of Automotive Advisors, a select group of successful auto manufacturers whose qualifications appear after the jump. Many are close personal friends of mine, and I can attest to their patriotism, integrity, ingenuity, and wonderful lack of law degrees.

There are pitchers too…

Anyone see where China's out selling us in cars? It was on Drudge recently, if not today.

Wasn't Mr. Rick Wagoner in charge of GM manufacturing & sales in China?

Following the collapse of GM and Chrysler - only Obama Motors will remain - foreign cars will have a 100% tax to eliminate competition.

Even though progressives love to drive Toyota's (as well they should, they are great cars) Toyota must succumb to their union overlords. That way, Toyota can be as strong as GM.

As I tell my physics/EE students, "A law degree does not constitute an education, nor is a solid education needed to obtain that degree. However, if you cannot hack science, there's always law to fall back on."

Appropriate apologies to all the superbly talented and intelligent law folks out there. We all know the good ones, and we all know the incompetent ones go into politics or government.

I might not be popular for saying this, but compared with 0bama's actual car committee picks, avanti would be great. He actually knows something about cars.
Maybe he'd find rescue funds for Studebaker.

Damn hard to stop though. A friend had a Baja Bug in high school and no matter the problem, we could always nurse it home if need be. The rocker arm shaft busted loose on one side of the engine once and we managed to drive it another 20 miles on two cylinders to get home. Replaced the busted bolts that had been holding it on and it ran like new. If you thought that 1200cc engine was gutless with 4 cylinders...

Sounds like it's time for a repost ...

'DEFINITION OF ACCELERATION'

One top fuel dragster 500 cubic inch Hemi engine makes more horsepower than the first 4 rows of stock cars at the Daytona 500.

Under full throttle, a dragster engine consumes 1-1/2 gallons of nitro methane per second; a fully loaded 747 consumes jet fuel at the same rate > with 25% less energy being produced.

A stock Dodge Hemi V8 engine cannot produce enough power to drive the dragster's supercharger.

With 3,000 CFM of air being rammed in by the supercharger on overdrive, the fuel mixture is compressed into a near-solid form before ignition.

Cylinders run on the verge of hydraulic lock at full throttle.

At the stoichiometric (stoichiometry: methodology and technology by which quantities of reactants and products in chemical reactions are determined) 1.7:1 air/fuel mixture of nitro methane, the flame front temperature measures 7,050 deg F.

Nitro methane burns yellow. The spectacular white flame seen above the stacks at night is raw burning hydrogen, dissociated from atmospheric water vapor by the searing exhaust gases.

Dual magnetos supply 44 amps to each spark plug. This is essentially the output of an arc welder in each cylinder.

Spark plug electrodes are totally consumed during a pass. After halfway, the engine is dieseling from compression, plus the glow of exhaust valves at 1,400 deg F. The engine can only be shut down by cutting the fuel flow.

If spark momentarily fails early in the run, unburned nitro builds up in the affected cylinders and then explodes with sufficient force to blow cylinder heads off the block in pieces or split the block in half.

In order to exceed 300 mph in 4.5 seconds, dragsters must accelerate an average of over 4G's. In order to reach 200 mph (well before half-track), the launch acceleration approaches 8G's.

Dragsters reach over 300 miles per hour before you have completed reading this sentence.

The redline is actually quite high at 9,500 rpm.

Assuming all the equipment is paid off, the crew worked for free, and for once NOTHING BLOWS UP, each run costs an estimate $1,000.00 per second.

The current top fuel dragster elapsed time record is 4.441 seconds for the quarter mile (10/05/03, Tony Schumacher). The top speed record is 333.00 mph (533 km/h) as measured over the last 66' of the run (09/28/03 Doug > Kalitta).

You are driving the average $140,000 Lingenfelter 'twin-turbo' powered Corvette Z06. Over a mile up the road, a top fuel dragster is staged and ready to launch down a quarter mile strip as you pass. You have the advantage of a flying start. You run the 'Vette hard up through the gears and blast across the starting line and pass the dragster at an honest 200 mph. The 'tree' goes green for both of you at that moment. The dragster launches and starts after you.

You keep your foot down hard, but you hear an incredibly brutal whine that sears your eardrums and within 3 seconds, the dragster catches and passes you. He beats you to the finish line, a quarter mile away from where you just passed him.

Think about it; from a standing start, the dragster had spotted you 200 mph and not only caught you, but nearly blasted you off the road when he passed you within a mere 1,320 foot long race course.

That, folks, is acceleration

Prolly not on Zer0s short list for automotive research as well.

I've got a twin-cylinder 22 horsepower lawn mower.

It sounds amazingly like one of those old VWs. Which is understandable, since it's producing about half as much power from half as many cylinders as the VW had.

How about "there's no substitute for cylinders"?

~~~"chromed 8-deuce Chrysler Hemis"~~~
The phrase bounces around my brain.
Sigh.. that was when we knew that America was unstoppable. Before Obama, Before Global warming(TM) Before Carter, before Nader, before laws to protect people from the consequences of their own decisions. If you wanted to go out and shoehorn a ford 427 side-oiler into your car the epa/dmv/tax everything bastards couldn't say jack. Take it out to Nevada and drive as fast as you could. Chromed 8-deuce Chrysler Hemis... Please excuse me... I'm off to go trade my gutless "new man" euro box for a '68 charger. Maybe grow some John Fogerty sideburns.
Speaking of cupholders, looks like the Iranians have gone for the upgrades. They've now got 7,000 centrifuges spinning furiously, which will speed their nuclear weapons program along all while the UN debating squad wonders how to lamely word the inevitable letter denouncing Iran's latest actions.
Why do I think a lot of people at the UN are wishing Iran would just hurry up and nuke Israel so they can stop pretending to want to stop Iran.
That's a classic. Note that it doesn't mention anything about horsepower, or comfort, or safety.
Just a suntanned girl on a spirited bronc.
You could sell just about anything with that.
Those Pierce Arrows were amazing, the tires were the height of a juvenile boy. Must have been the devil to change.
I remember playing in all the old cars when I was a young boy. I think the Pierce Arrow had this cool little shade that you could pull down on the back window. The parents were really into it, they belonged to the horseless carriage club and would get all dressed up in the vintage garb and drive up to Tahoe in his model A. Bro and I got stuck home with the mean aunt which is probably why I remember this stuff.
Raining much there, coming down pretty good just now.
Don't know about those type of old cars, but I owned a Toyota Landcruiser II myself.
Together with my wife we once managed to change one of those huge tires in five minutes in the middle of the bush on a corrugated dust road in Ethiopia. RECORD!
Nope, but it does appear there is a 3-million dollar link to the ANWR Alaska effort. I thought the headline was too provocative to skip the research on.
... thanks also, Mandy! (for the watch link!)
There was a leader of a European country in the previous century who also got into the car business, and he called his vehicle the "people's car". Color me skeptical, but I don't have a lot of trust in Obama's latest foray into the automobile industry.
It's a pity we've got a president who's so power-mad he thinks he can run the American automobile industry by Fiat.
