Paulians Briefly Link to LGF, Quickly Delete Evidence

US News • Views: 1,882

Here’s a charming little thread posted tonight at the Ron Paul Forums, but quickly deleted when they realized I would trace the referrals back to them, titled: LGF: Tea Party Coopted by Paulians.

Prompted by this LGF post, pointing out the Ron Paulians have infiltrated the Pensacola Tea Party.

LGF is essentially an arm of AIPAC. I didn’t read the site, but I suspect the comments contain references to Stormfront, Christianity, evolution, and John Birch. Let them stay home. They are exactly what’s wrong with the party. They’re close-minded war mongers, with loyalties that lie outside of America’s best interests.

It's like I told my 0-bot pseudo brother-in-law....Ron Paul is the worst of both worlds for me; all the foreign policy decisions with the left brought to you by a crusty old paleocon....

For once we were in 100% agreement.

Sorry to go OT - especially with a re-post from the last thread but:
Hey y'all - wow, we had horrendous Thunderstorms, hail the size of golf balls and Tornadoes most of the late afternoon and although the weather service says danger of tornadoes has passed it's still raining like crazy.
And I'm confused by this video - last time I saw Ry he was a)older and b) somewhat, uh, heavier!
I don't get it - I first heard of Ry Cooder when he did the incredible background music for a really poor film about the National Guard down in Louisiana and I know that was in the 1980's some time. How come I'm a lot older looking now that Ry is?!

with loyalties that lie outside of America's best interests

-some paulian

No, I think what lies outside of America's best interest is to fan the flames of revolution with a desire to destroy the Constitution in an effort to re-establish it. It is madness to seek to destroy what you already have to somehow make it pure. Like amputating your hand to deal with a paper cut. People who want to correct the current flaws in our system of government, who claim to love the Constitution, would work under the constraints of the Constitution to solve problems, not undermine it like these people do with their unrest fantasies. They seek to shatter our national contract to re-establish a fantasy. Fuck them.

These tea parties are looking more and more like RightWing Freak Conventions. I am guessing that these will be highlighted by the MSM as proof that the Republicans are insane. The attendees will be displayed as "mainstream" and "everyday" Republican voters. Unlike the leftist displays of idiocy, which are usually downplayed or explained away. Whatever the organizers are hoping to accomplish will be overshadowed by all the extremists in their midst. Good job guys!

From my post on the Pensacola Tea Party thread...

Let me try this again.

So where would we have this energy directed?
I have no problem with attending the tea party nearest me and distributing handouts, but what would you all recommend that they say?
Who should people contact? (other than their elected officials; I plan to include those addresses, emails, phones & faxes)
Groups?
Websites?
Books?

We're going to have a slew of people who are unhappy with the present administration/government gathered in specific places and instead of providing them with useful information and recommendations, we're simply going to cede them to the kooks?

I can do this on my own, but you're the smartest, most politically aware and savvy group I know; I was hoping for a little assistance here.

43 realwest  Fri, Apr 10, 2009 8:58:59pm

re: #18 Desert Dog
Hey my friend, sorry but this is a repost from the Glenn Beck Tea Party thread - it was written to zombie, but I'd like your take on it:

Regrettably when the people assemble freely, you are inevitably gonna get some real whackos in the crowd. And THAT is what the MSM will cover and make a big deal out of - not what the majority of folks come to say and hear.
Unless, of course, it's a LEFTIST assembly of people (which, for anarchists is obviously necessary; they aren't going to organize anything!) where you will hear at least 10 times as many horrible things. But the MSM will not cover it or will only cover it to show the "police brutality" that was used to control them or a confrontation between whatever Leftist groups are protesting and counter-protesters.
Hearing this "burn the books" crap makes me nauseous and brings my admittedly always on a low boil anger level to a high boil.
But then what do the "right" people do zom? Do we give up our rights to peacefully assemble and have a public discourse (and yes, sometimes a public discourse is shouting back and forth)? How do we keep the weirdos (our version, if you will, of the anarchists) out of the demonstration?
And frankly I wouldn't be at all surprised to discover that some folks have been planted in attendance to yell things like burn the books or worse.
I DO hate the fact that people yell things like "burn the books" or even worse, but I just don't know how to avail ourselves of our constitutionally granted freedom of assembly. Shout them down - absolutely, but I suspect many clear thinking individuals are or have been so shocked that someone would say such a thing that they don't have the reflexes to respond before some other nutter joins the fray followed by his or her fellow nutters.
I wish I had an answer to this because the Vietnam War showed that LARGE demonstrations - when covered by the MSM in a fair manner - CAN have an impact on governmental policy.
Shit.

Thanks DD!

That would be more appropriate but there are some that want a pure Constitutional interpretation going back before the days of the Bill of Rights and the Marshal Court. Many aspects of American society have evolved since the inception of the Constitution that required legal interpretation. Many laws are based on Supreme Court rulings that can't be reversed without exposing America to legal anarchy.

Freak shows are never a good idea, John. They look very bad on TV and the MSM will use them to make normal people fear us. Normal people may enjoy watching a freak show, but they don't actually want the freaks in charge of anything.

Problem is the MSM will SEEK OUT these sort of people and stories, and keep conservatives busy putting out these little fires.

Hey Gus! Uh, minor point here, but the Bill of Rights (first ten amendments to the Consitution) were adopted by all of the States at the same time they all finally approved the Constitution - without it, some states wouldn't have approved the Constitution!

You mean proposed. The Bill of Rights was ratified after the last State ratified the Constitution. Rhode Island was that state in 1790. The Bill of Rights was ratified the next year.

Google 'synagogue of satan' and the first link is from an "antichristconspiracy" site that is rife with Jew hatred of all sorts: 9-11 was a Zionist conspiracy, the Talmud proves Jewish racism, and of course the John Birch Society is a front for the Zionist conspiracy.

I guess that's the standard slam among fringe freaks: discredit rival fringe freak groups by accusing them of being in league with the Zionists. Comforting to know we're hated on the extremes of Left AND Right. I guess that makes us equal opportunity scapegoats.

Yes, please do. Anyone know how to do the Windows screen shot thing?

I use "Snagit" from techsmith.com numerous times a day for several years, with it you can snag a part or whole of any window, it then opens in a preview viewer where you can edit it, copy to clipboard, resize, email and so on.

For example, if I'm sending someone an email on how to run a program and I want them to click the "whatever" button, I'll snag a picture of the little button, copy to clipboard and past it in the email or document.

Of course the Paulians are in the Tea Party Movement. They are for limited government, its ridiculous to say they "infiltrated" when they have been for this sort of behavior all along.

Really, Charles, I know you don't like the Paulians, but be reasonable here. The Tea Party movement is a massive grass roots movement of people trying to shrink the size and scope of government, which is right up the Ron Paul followers alley, it would be hypocritical of them if they DIDN'T attend.

198 Radar  Fri, Apr 10, 2009 9:35:13pm

This is just my observation of all things Ron Paul related.

I have noticed that all of the really dedicated Ron Paul supporters are I have met are kooks. Not just any kook, but hardcore, reality challenged kooks. The common elements include:

The ones I know seem to not be able to think for themselves, but do ALL of their thinking by posting, pasting, or linking to something the "Dr." said or wrote. I have seen very few of his supporters put things into their own words and have had even less success having conversations with them where they can really speak what they believe. They are always super sensitive, and ultimately hostile to any criticism of the Dr. in any form. It is strangely cult like.

I have noticed that when you start to get to know them, they all seem to be AIPAC conspiracy wonks. Sometimes they start out as eloquent and intelligent folks, but the more you get to know them the more the anti-AIPAC crap starts to come out. Even worse, you can often find them to be just downright anti-Semitic and racist cranks underneath it all.

Also, of the really hardcore supporters, there seems to be a tendency to try to wish all of us back to this idyllic, perfect, mythical, Constitutional past that never has actually happened. I teach history, and while I know WHY they feel that way, it isn't actually TRUE, and simply wishing really hard won't turn back the clock to a perfect past that never was. Nothing irks me more than lying about history, even if they are doing so from a perspective of ideas I agree with. Birchers are the worst of these types. Have you ever watched any of their propaganda? That America that yearn for never existed and could never have existed. They are quite simply, utopian idealists as dangerous as any of the lefts utopian idealists.

For example, I got to know a Paulian through Facebook (I know, I know). He regularly posted lots of good political articles. Occasionally, I would comment on some of them (among many others). Then, as time went on, all of his postings became Ron Paul links. So much so that it was almost a reverence for the man. It had a creepy vibe to it. Then, as this election came and went, it got worse and the anti-AIPAC stuff started seeping in. Then that was ALL that was being posted. That told me all I needed to know. Then the John Birch video popped up. I laughed through the whole thing because their version of America's past just wasn't true. I no longer have that person on my friends list. It got way too gross for me. Unfortunately, he was just a good example of a trend I have seen in many Ron Paul supporters.

But that's just my experience. I learned everything I need to know about them, and I don't want anything to do with it. I still plan on attending a Tea Party, but I fear the kooks will come out and grab all the attention. Unfortunately, that has always happened. Think about the crowd that trashed the MA governor's house and the burned the Tax Collector's house and ran him out of town during the Stamp Act crisis...actions which many of the more eloquent and prominent Son's of Liberty decried (you know, that whole "respect private property, don't give in to the mob" thing?). So this is nothing new. It is, I am afraid, just something that is part of all human societies, and especially free ones who are allowed to exercise their freedom of speech and assembly.

We will just have to deal. Meanwhile, the rational ones will hang out and commune in places like LGF. It's why I come here. It is refreshing to see a place that values reason and rational inquiry with a skeptical bent and a critical eye regardless of party affiliation or ideology. I like that Charles holds the Republicans accountable when they screw up. I don't agree with him all the time, but this place is a breath of fresh air on the internet which so often dissolves down to the lowest common denominator. And all the proof you need is simply how pissed off he gets the reactionary ideologues.

Just going to a 'Tea Party', unless you are a public figure of some kind is probably not going to do any harm, because your presence does nothing but inflate the head count.

re: #99 Sharmuta
In the United States, the Bill of Rights is the name by which the first ten amendments to the United States Constitution are known.[1] They were introduced by James Madison to the First United States Congress in 1789 as a series of articles, and came into effect on December 15, 1791, when they had been ratified by three-fourths of the States. Thomas Jefferson was the main proponent of the Bill of Rights.[2]
The United States Bill of Rights consists of the ten amendments added to the Constitution in 1791, as supporters of the constitution had promised critics during the debates of 1788.
So while you're technically correct, the reality was that the Consitution itself was only ratified because the Bill of Rights had been promised to be added and were in 1791.
Interestingly enough, Massachsetts nearly didn't ratify the Consitution anyway - the vote being 187 for and 168 against! [Link: en.wikipedia.org...]

Sorry, don't (totally) agree. You can reject something out-of-hand (close-minded, or withered thought) or you can reject something after serious consideration (open-minded and thoughtful). If you understand why something was rejected, then you have a foundation to construct something on. Thoughtful rejection takes effort.

Hell if it wasn't for the Anti-War Left, Anarchists would have no place to go, given that by their nature they are not the kind to organize anything!
Seriously - we need two things, really: a) a leader like say Rudy or Mitt to be THE speaker at a major Tea Party so as to shut down the idiots in the crowd (Rudy is particularly adept at that!) and b) HONEST coverage by the MSM. But just because we don't have and probably never will have b) doesn't mean we shouldn't try a) - grassroots movements have to start SOMEWHERE and whether or not it's a "Tea Party" or something similar, I do believe something needs to be done. Writing letters to Democrat Congresscritters won't work - or at least it sure as hell hasn't worked in the past.

I don't think you'll get a groupthink answer to this.
You can stay home, you can go and just see what's up, take pics and report back, or you can go armed with some info to provide to the 'normal' people who'll be there. Apparently the last option isn't particularly popular here.

Excellent comment.

I just wanted to add, that along with the Paulestinians you described, I believe that there was a mass of lefty kooks and college students who under normal circumstances would never support anyone who supports some of the things that Ron Paul claimed to (like laissez-faire capitalism, ending the welfare state, etc). What attracted them to RP like flies on shit was either his anti-Iraq war rhetoric or his promise to end the war on drugs. As soon as Obama was the Dem nominee, most of them dropped RP like a bad habit. After the election, the rest of them did too. The 19 year olds with the the RP RloveUTION shirts are nowhere to found on college campuses anymore.

So all of Ron Paul's "followers" are the original paleo-lib troofer militia NWO conspiracy theory kooks who always supported him or other various überlibertarian nutjobs like him and the Nazis who support him because "Ending foreign aid" = hanging Israel out to dry. They are loud and crazy and wont simply "Just walk away" to quote The Humongous.

re: #236 Unakite

Sorry, don't (totally) agree. You can reject something out-of-hand (close-minded, or withered thought) or you can reject something after serious consideration (open-minded and thoughtful). If you understand why something was rejected, then you have a foundation to construct something on. Thoughtful rejection takes effort.

Point taken, but thoughtful rejection is not what we're getting tonight from burntjohn.

Chanting "NO NO NO" and "STOP STOP STOP" is what we're getting from burntjohn. That's withered thought. Maybe I should have clarified: "simple" rejection is mindless.

Ultimately it's about what we want, beyond merely what we don't want for America. Affirmative thought. That takes a kind of determined, inspirational, rational, and strategic persistence that I don't usually detect among the chanters or slogan-yellers.

This is just my observation of all things Ron Paul related.
I have noticed that all of the really dedicated Ron Paul supporters are I have met are kooks. Not just any kook, but hardcore, reality challenged kooks. The common elements include:

snip . . .

I have noticed that when you start to get to know them, they all seem to be AIPAC conspiracy wonks. Sometimes they start out as eloquent and intelligent folks, but the more you get to know them the more the anti-AIPAC crap starts to come out. Even worse, you can often find them to be just downright anti-Semitic and racist cranks underneath it all.

snip . . .

I think you're right on the money. These folks seem to start "contrarian" and then get sucked into a vortex of conspiracy theories and end up completely paranoid. That's why I think Ron Paul himself cratered so badly in the first Republican "debate." His ideas are so "out there" that very few people understood what he was talking about.

Even if some of Ron Paul's ideas are good, it doesn't take long before you start uncovering the bizarre, a complete turn off. Of course, the same is true for Obama, except that in Obama's case, the remote control in his teleprompter doesn't allow him to articulate a lot of his true goals and ideals on national TV.

Too quiet here tonight. We had a family invasion for the 2 Seders, and at the first one? The 2 1/2 year old grandson was the ruler, with his 2 girl cousins, ages 6 and 8, and they happily let him rule.

The second night, the 6 year old and parents and our youngest son were here. First night the 6 year old and parents came here for desert, as it was son-in-law's birthday.

re: #309 NY Nana

Thank you so much for your help. It was just the weirdest thing I ever saw happen.

And no one remembered to bring a camera, and we totally forgot that they could use their mobiles to tape. I have enough trouble figuring how to make calls!

Back to the salt mines with you! ;)

My father has clearly gotten fed up with not having grandchildren. All through the seder it was "Well, when my GRANDDAUGHTER reads the Fir Kashes..." or "No, we'll hide the Afikomen when the GRANDCHILDREN can look for it..."

I think I'm on notice.

A propriety blend, or will they be included in the next cookbook? "Lizard Spiced Troll"

I'll see if I can come up with a usable troll-specific blend that can fit in the cookbook. All my spice blend are from my mother. She spent much of her childhood in New Orleans and developed an appreciation for spices there.

I like spices. Mostly anything mixed with garlic. A dash of red pepper always helps.

Looks like the conservatives in the UK have Obama down -

President Barack Obama has recently completed the most successful foreign policy tour since Napoleon's retreat from Moscow. You name it, he blew it. What was his big deal economic programme that he was determined to drive through the G20 summit? Another massive stimulus package, globally funded and co-ordinated. Did he achieve it? Not so as you'd notice.

Barack is not the first New World ingenue to discover that European leaders will load him with praise, struggle sycophantically to be photographed with him and outdo him in Utopian rhetoric. But when it comes to the critical moment of opening their wallets - suddenly it is flag-day in Aberdeen. Okay, put the G20 down to inexperience, beginner's nerves, what you will.

On to Nato and the next big objective: to persuade the same European evasion experts that America, Britain and Canada should no longer bear the brunt of the Afghan struggle virtually unassisted. The Old World sucked through its teeth, said that was asking a lot - but, seeing it was Barack, to whom they could refuse nothing, they would graciously accede to his wishes.

So The One retired triumphant, having secured a massive contribution of 5,000 extra troops - all of them non-combatant, of course - which must really have put the wind up the Taliban, at the prospect of 5,000 more infidel cooks and bottle-washers swarming into the less hazardous regions of Afghanistan.

Then came the dramatic bit, the authentic West Wing script, with the President wakened in the middle of the night in Prague to be told that Kim Jong-il had just launched a Taepodong-2 missile. America had Aegis destroyers tracking the missile and could have shot it down. But Uncle Sam had a sterner reprisal in store for l'il ole Kim (as Dame Edna might call him): a multi-megaton strike of Obama hot air.

re: #308 Spar Kling

I think that describes it pretty well. Back in my libertarian days I was slowly sucked into all kinds of ridiculous paranoid conspiracies that slowly crept up on me and were easy to fall into when they come at you slowly and in small portions. One kook belief feeds another and it becomes a vicious cycle. After awhile you are completely in kook land and don't even notice it.

Since I'm not a fool by nature, a few things I ran into in kook-land woke me up from the trance and shook me back into reality. Eventually I left the LP entirely after 9-11. I'm totally embarrassed at some of the crap I believed in during the 90s and thats probably the reason why I have zero fucking tolerance for this crap anymore.

A man took his dog to the Vet. He said, "Doctor, I think my dog is dead."

The Vet told him to put the dog on the table and then left the room. Soon he came back with a cat. The cat sniffed the dogs ears, his nose and then walked all over him.

The Vet said, "Yep, your dog is dead. That will be $500 and $35 dollars."

The man said, "$500 and $35 dollars! What for?"

The Vet said, "$35 for the office visit and $500 for the cat scan."

351 Dark_Falcon  Fri, Apr 10, 2009 10:21:39pm

OT, but good:

Pirates Test the ‘Rule of Law’

The last two paragraphs from the article:

This is the self-destructive straitjacket for which transnational progressives are fitting us. Indeed, the Law of the Sea Treaty — a compact Obama would commit us to — has hopelessly complicated the rules of engagement under which the pirates have thrived, just as Protocol I of the Geneva Conventions (a treaty Ronald Reagan was prudent enough to reject) has become an offensive weapon for jihadists everywhere. Having harnessed ourselves, we are once again the weak horse.

Except for one thing: The Americans on the Alabama, like the Americans on Flight 93, didn’t wait for the international community to send the pirates a strong letter. They saw evil, they took it on, and as a result they took their ship and their lives back. The president may not think the United States is a particularly exceptional country, but you can bet Islamic radicals on land and sea noticed that dealing with a U.S. crew is an exceptional experience. There remains something in the American character that won’t slide so easily into the straitjacket.

Yes, we noticed in 1939, or have you never had a history lesson? Now let me see my child, who exactly was it who laid down their lives for cowardly Continentals, who didn't want to waste the lives of their children in pointless wars? Why - that would be the Americans - and us. And who was it that turned yellow and shipped the children of their Jewish citizens to the gas chambers of their very good friends and neighbours the Germans? - ah that would be the cheese-eating surrender monkeys (original pattern).
Oh - oh, and who was it that was sacrificing their childrens' lives in that pointless war? The Germans, bonehead.

And when the Balkans was drowning in the blood of their children, whose lives were undoubtedly wasted for some excellent reason, who was it who came in to stop it? Yep Chris L - the Americans."

-If you don't join The MovementTM, you're a lazy do-nothing.
-If you don't join The MovementTM, you're de facto casting a vote for Obama's next term.

Could be. This is like an air crash. You can't second guess anyone until we get the final NTSB report. The SEAL teams no doubt have been consulted and given their assessment of the situation. This just occurred last week so there's no sense in thinking that this can play out within a couple of days. Some hostage situations last for years as we have seen in Columbia with FARC.

I think I finally figured out the mentality.

A disproportionate number of young black men die by gunshot. There for we need to get rid of guns.

If you don't want to get rid of guns, you are racist.

Faulty logic, but I think I figured it out.

Never mind the facts. That

a) the first gun control laws enacted in this country were specifically designed to disarm blacks. Jim Crow laws worked to keep recently freed black men and women enslaved. Also making it really convenient for this country's most notorious home-grown terrorist organization (the KKK) to target and murder any black individual they chose. (no lesson to be learned here--move on)

b) That the majority young black men that are dying are murdered by other young black men. Not by whites or cops. No notion of old men of any race, working to mentor young black men, or any attempt to "socially" engineer a way to encourage the fathers of these young men to take responsibility for their children. No encouragement of JROTC or military service during which these young men might learn discipline or the proper handling of a firearm. (no lesson here --move on)

c) "Manhood" is no longer culturally significant. The feminists and multi-culturists have successfully obliterated any values that once helped young men to measure themselves. Honesty, Integrity, Grit, Accomplishment are now "White Man" values that must be shunned. (no lesson here --move on)

Have I missed anything?

Hillary is playing the only card she and Bill know - treat it like a crime.

The FBI led the effort in the African embassy bombings.

OBL told us that our response there omly reinforced the belief of Islamists everywhere that the US was weak.

Perhaps we should fly some jets over Puntland at mach 1.5, maybe right over the Big Kahuna's mud hut? Give them an idea of who they are screwing with?

re: #362 So?

The US is sending in the FBI to do hostage negotiation with the vermin muslim Somali pirates. This is a military issue not a domestic FBI issue. These Somali boats should be blown out of the water as soon as they begin to approach any ship.

Hillary Clinton is a joke. Plus the irony here is that this ship is carrying relief goods for suffering Africans.

I thought the FBI was domestic and the CIA foreign? Does that make sense?

Returned to the coast that is:

MOGADISHU (Reuters) - Pirates on a German ship with 24 foreign hostages said on Saturday they had returned to the Somali coast after failing to locate the scene of a standoff involving an American captive on a drifting lifeboat.

Pirates had hoped to use the hijacked 20,000-tonne container vessel, Hansa Stavanger, as a "shield" to reach fellow pirates holding American ship captain Richard Phillips far out in the Indian Ocean. U.S. naval ships are close to the lifeboat.

We have to wait. Nothing much we can do about it other than that.

I don't know - we could take action against other pirate craft in the area. Hit them on the ground on shore and gather up some intelligence.

If the pirates holding the captain kill him, they are dead. They know that. So subjecting them to a slow bleed by taking out their confederates at least gives them some motivation for letting the guy go in hopes of getting out alive.

But geting on the phone to establish a sense of normalcy and calm only stiffens their spines and time then works against us, not for us IMO.

This is like Dog Day Afternoon on the high seas. Suffice it to say that Naval officers have scant preparation for such a scenario. You might as well fly out an FBI contingent, people who know how to interact with cornered kidnappers. I agree that this thing has the potential of really dragging on.

They're too spread out for any type of military strike to work. We're talking thousands of mile of Somali coast. There's also international laws to consider and civilian casualties. Regardless it would still be ineffective since they're such a "small" target. Even if we did carry out one strike it wouldn't stop them.

I think once we get beyond this situation we need to allow ship board security for these ships since this ain't gonna cut it. The short range goal should focus on that since Naval escorts are not cost effective. Kill the pirates during the act is the best goal.

re: #403 mikeymom

thanks---did you watch the whole piece--how peeps w/traing did poorly? im not trying to start something --just--curious?

Read the article missed any video link.
It's amazing even with cops how poor the shooting is under stress. A classic shoot out in Ohio, cop and bad guy 10 feet apart multiple shots, no one gets hit.

Most cops qualify once a quarter. I go the to range at least once a month and shoot a qualify set. SEAL team members shoot thousands of rounds a week.

Training makes a difference, but the piece over plays it.

The Birmingham shooter expended nearly 100 rounds for 13 victims, the Virginia Tech shooter 300 round for 30+ victims.

Such shooters aren't expecting resistance, so any thing coming back at them is going to seriously upset their plans. Usually when confronted they cap themselves.

I think the piece seriously overplays the training bit.

That said, I recommend anyone who decides to carry to take a combat handgun course. And to mind game scenarios consistently. Like the story, in a class room a gunman comes in, visual every movement.

Lastly, firearm owner ship is secondary result is self defense against criminals.

The first purpose as intended, as needed is that an armed populace is impervious to tyranny.

If I knew that Athos I'd surely tell y'all. But I don't know. But who knows, politicians being politicians, if they ever understand that - IMO - these Tea Parties are for REAL, they are (the whackos, Paulians and all the rest notwithstanding) seriously concerned with Obama proposing a budget that CALLS FOR A $1.5 TRILLION DEFICIT; That Obama's tax increases aren't only for the "rich"; that mortgage relief isn't intended to help them, that we have an 8.5% Unemployment rate and something like an 11% underemployment rate, that we are only cutting Federal Funding in the area of Defense Spending, maybe they'll jump on board with us and say NO, we want to freeze all "freezable" Federal Spending, we don't want National Healthcare (which, btw, accounts for HALF of that $1.5 Trillion deficit) that we want ALL AMERICANS to take responsibility for their own financing and that we want the crooked CEO's and their enablers in Government to get shit canned and maybe jailed and, MOSTLY we want CAPTIALISM and a Government that is responsible to it's people - the kind of government that recognizes that the People are THEIR employers, then maybe we'll find one or more than one. All I seem to be hearing or reading is that it (this current economic/foreign policy debacle) is the fault of the right - WE have to provide answers to Obamas idiocy. We're supposed to be the loyal Opposition; we are supposed to say NO - come up with something better for the American People. And everytime anyone on the right proposes anything that might be worthwhile the Democrats and the MSM shoot it all to pieces so the rest of the people -when they finally hear about it - naturally treat it as damaged goods.
Who knows Athos my friend, if we capitulate to the Pirates - especially with their "reinforcements" that'll be the step that puts many, many more of us on the Tea Party kind of course (again, without the Paulian, Beck and other kooks and idiots, fools and opportunitsts).

re: #365 ggt

I saw that same comment thread.

Nice to see that sentiment expressed from time to time, but it is uncommon.

I have a German exchange student with us this month. Nice kid. Smart. And he comes brainwashed.

So I told him flat out today that he need no longer worry - America may be getting out of the world police business.

I pointed out that, with Obama in charge, the US will cut back its military. Europe will be more vulnerable. And when he is out of office and the Republicans return, we won't feel compelled to re-commit to European freedom. Europe has shown it is not interested in the freedom of Iraqis or Afghanis - so why should we be bothered with Europe's?

"But there is trade to think about ..." he said.

I pointed out to him that Europeans were the first to do business with China after Tienanmen and that the firms that cheated Iraq's poor by doing business with Saddam were European. So America has no reason to fear our trade relationship with Europe would suffer if we did something Europe doesn't like.

So that has him thinking.

I am not a John Bircher, but I do think it is time to reduce our footprint in NATO. Europe should pay the social and economic costs of having to defend itself instead of screwing us constantly in "soft power" gamesmanship.

What are you trying to say? Is the whole 'tea party' a front for crazy peeps like Glenn Beck, Stormfront, and the like? If it is, I want no part of it, but if its a grass roots coalition of peeps who don't like a 1.8 trillion debt per year, then I am with it.

You might try finding your event at taxdayteaparty.com; there are forums there, where you may be able to get a feel for the type of people who will be attending the tea party you're interested in.

The tea parties are not a front for crazy people. This is a grassroots movement. That doesn't mean crazy people won't show up, of course, but I guess you have to decide how determined you are to exercise your constitutional right. If it were me, I'd go, and if I was uncomfortable with the tone of it for some reason, I'd get in my car and leave.

re: #467 realwest

It was, in all honesty, a rhetorical question as I don't think many of us really see any leaders stepping forward. It's as if they don't want to step forward and accept the bullseye on the back and the arrows that result from willing to be a leader.

You do articulate a good portion of what is the compelling vision and message that needs to get communicated. The message has to be about what is best for the country based on historical information and that we are doing nothing but repeating the failures of the 1930's - just trying to do them with more money as if the reason for the failure was the lack of effort not the bankruptcy of the policy.

Given the MSM losing all pretences of being a fourth estate (more like a fifth column), there is the challenge of how to engage new media to get the message out without being compromised by the fringe elements of the right or the left. Of course, as we've learned here - we can't ignore those fringe elements as they have to be called out for their insanity and fringe looniness.

I'm glad to hear that you and your mother survived the rough weather this afternoon and early evening.

Actually it's good that this stand-off has lasted this long. The time delay has given the Navy adequate time to move in the necessary assets to the scene. No. I will quote my original post:

re: #386 Slumbering Behemoth

So this is the message I have managed to cobble together from those adamant at obfuscating and glossing over the "Breakfast Cereal Contingent" (fruits, nuts, and flakes) of this Tea Party MovementTM:

-If you don't join The MovementTM, you are a coward.
-If you don't join The MovementTM, you're a lazy do-nothing.
-If you don't join The MovementTM, you're de facto casting a vote for Obama's next term.
-If you don't join The MovementTM, and participate in their street-theater protests, you're a basement dweller who never goes outside to breath fresh air of feel sunlight.
-If you don't join The MovementTM, you're burying your head in the sand and refusing to see The Truth.

Am I missing any of their talking points?

My point here is that there are those that are so ideologically driven, and so damned aroused and excited about this Tea Party thing that not only do they want to ignore and excuse the distasteful fringe element that is seeping into this movement, they want to sling slurs at those who see this detrimental and damaging fringe for what it is.

Look, are you guys going to give up some your beliefs in smaller government because some people you disagree with also believe in smaller government?
Thats silly. The whole idea behind the tea party movement is a simple message: lower taxes and lower spending. We can find common ground with others on that message, and then fight them on the other messages we disagree on. If we refuse to cooperate with others in areas we all agree on, the tax and spend types will always win.

There is a very good analogy here from our founders. The northern states and several of our founders wanted to ban slavery, but they compromised on that and focused on issues that could be agreed on, until a later date. The issue at hand was defeating the British and establish a "more perfect union." We did that, then a couple generations later when we were secure as a nation we hashed out the issue of slavery and banned it. If we had let these (very important) differences divide us we would never have become a country.

Another example is the US and the USSR in WW2. We joined forces to defeat a common enemy despite the horrors of communism. Then when we had defeated that enemy we fought the cold war against each other and eventually capitalism triumphed.
Although it may sound like I am arguing for selling out or making a deal with the Devil, I am not. I am arguing that we should unite on the issues we agree on and fight over those we don't. If we fight with others even on the issues we agree on, then we will ultimately lose.
The gun lobby is a good example of this; by sticking to a single issue its been able to (along with a massive grass roots movement) turn back the tide of gun control in this country. Nowadays even democrats are starting to see the error of their gun banning ways and have started siding with the NRA. We free marketeers can do the same thing, we should all unite as capitalists over issues we agree on. Instead of thinking as "Republican" or "Democrat", "Independent," "Libertarian" etc, we should push single issues very, very hard. We should form a grass roots around the issues we care about. By doing this we ensure that the issues diffuse through BOTH parties, and not just the one.

It sucks for them, and it sucks for you, on two different levels. Not only are such alliances with antidemocratic folks inherently immoral, they also lose many more people than they gain, since the sensible center will quite rightly never ally with such people, and you become discredited in their eyes by your own willingness to associate with people of that odious and excrable ilk.

It happens. :-) Actually, I think the perception has more to do with the frequency of topics here than if we simply went down a list. I freely admit that I'm very skeptical rather than mainstream on one famous topic. And my best friend and I disagree vehemently on it too. We're still friends, though.

In my experience, it's much easier to completely reject a person as a fraud and a fool when encountering a disagreement. This is precisely what astonished David Horowitz in Radical Son when he left the Communist cause. He lost many or most of his dearest friends.

It's also why I avoid arguing politics with my NPR-addicted colleagues. It will simply make them hostile and I won't change their precious world view.

re: #336 ArchangelMichael

Very well put! There are indeed facts and reasoning behind some of these, and heaven help us, a very few might even be true, but we should avoid being recruited into someone's "cult" of uncritical believers. This obviously includes political and religious cults, but I think we all are susceptible to others including scientific cults, artistic cults, personality cults, medical treatment cults, historical-revisionist cults, and so on.

In my opinion, every movement or idea in society has their highly motivated recruiters and sales people who want to gain a following. I'm not sure that I want to be completely critical about everything that I hear and read--that might make me into a different kind of kook. I guess the trick to avoiding the crap is to know when to "get off the train" as you did.

Notice the spittle-flecked desperation in the mannerisms of anyone who discusses that topic; such a person is actually saying to you, "I'm a wild-eyed obsessive-compulsive who doesn't get out much."

I love your description! And I sometimes have to deflect these people, too.

However, more practically, I do know that progressives* are very good at gaining control of ordinary organizations for their own cause. I saw it happen in two college organizations that I once belonged to, and I've heard other people noting similar experiences. Most recently, someone I know who used to exhibit at the Maker Faire (sponsored by Make magazine) is now quitting because he feels that it's being taken over by these political zealots.
