About 30 years ago on a Saturday morning, I chased the members of Split Enz around Tower Records with my colored letraset markers, insisting they sign their new album "True Colors" in "True Colors".
Yeah, a laser etched LP.
They put on an incredible show the following night - they were as now immaculate musicians and showmen. When the sound system at the Keystone Palo Alto died, Noel Crombie played spoons for about 10 minutes until they got it back up.

Scenario:
US warship maneuvers to w/in say, 100 yds of the Somali dinghy where the good Cpt. Phillips is being held. If there are 10 pirates in the small boat, then 30 Marines with 2X-scoped M-14s are lined up along the rails and lying in wait just out of view.
The instant the jabberwock with the gun to the Captain's head looks away, all 30 Marines rise up and BAM!
A small contingent of SEALS immediately race to the scene and pluck Cpt. Phillips from the pirate craft and gather the corpses to hang over the side of the US warship as dock bumpers while they cruise the coast of Somalia and level all of those pirate mansions we've been hearing about.

I think there needs to be a UN resolution on pirates. Hopefully most countries can agree on one.
The vice president of the Philippines, the nation with the largest number of sailors held captive by Somali pirates, appealed for the safety of hostages to be ensured in the standoff.
"We hope that before launching any tactical action against the pirates, the welfare of every hostage is guaranteed and ensured," said Vice President Noli de Castro. "Moreover, any military action is best done in consultation with the United Nations to gain the support and cooperation of other countries."By the time that happens, pirate offspring will be taking over the "business".

I am not saying this to make anything "right," but this is possible. Woody is a method actor, so, he is very much "in" character 24 hours a day when he is working on something.
His problem is he's not good at "breaking" the character when he is done for with it, and this has gotten him in trouble before.
Or, at least he has used it as an excuse before.
But, bottom line, not right.

There is a line of reasoning like that. I've heard that because the evil Europeans, Chinese and others have over-fished the region, the poor fishermen have nothing else to turn to. That maybe, but piracy in 2009 is almost exclusively a Muslim activity. The Horn of Africa, off the coast of Nigeria, the Malacca Strait....it is Muslim pirates hijacking ships and crews for ransom. Sometimes, they forgo the ransom and just sell the cargo.
If there is no consequence for these actions, why should the pirates stop? There has to be a price for this activity that the pirate will pay. Otherwise, get used to this crap, it is not going to stop.

re: #170 Desert Dog
The only ones we hear about are pirates from Muslim countries, we don't hear about the ones in the China sea or elsewhere. Piracy is motivated by money, NOT by ideology. A good reason I've heard is the huge commercial fishing trawlers have basically fished the local waters dry of fish, and a lot of the livelihood of Somalis (not just the fisherman, but the people whose economy is based on those fisherman) was destroyed, too.
I'm not condoning it, just saying that they are pirates who might happen to be Muslim. They are not pirates because they are Muslim.

This is nuts.
Dr. Mohammed Sahloul, chairman of the Council of Islamic Organizations of Chicago, said that while police should follow the usual procedures with all defendants, "they should respect the modesty of the accused."
Sahloul, who made it clear he was not aware of the Hadid case and was speaking in general terms about the hijab, pointed out that Muslim women are allowed to wear hijabs in photos for their state IDs.
"If it's for the purposes of identification and they cover in public, then that's going to be more effective in identifying them anyway," he said.
That's her! Tthe one in the hijab!

c) send some SEALS in under cover of darkness in our own little rigid small boats and take over that Lifeboat.
d) when the Pirate Reinforcements get there, let them look at ALL THE SMOKE on the horizon where their bases USED TO BE and what Motherships stayed in port USED TO BE and then politely ask them to turn over all the hostages on the "Reinforcement" foreign Ships, return the foreign ships to their rightful owners (our Navy can take over control until the Norweigans and others show up to claim their ships) and

I am not saying all Muslims are pirates.....but I will say that MOST pirates are muslims.....sound familiar? It is a tradition in Malacca since Islam arrived...it was one for the Barbary Pirates as well....the same with Cape Horn and now off the coast of West Africa. Those are all Muslim pirates operating there. There are other pirates in the world that are not Muslim. The motivation, of course, is the money. It's millions in your hand if you get a ship now. But, I will submit that this pirating tradition is partially based in world outlook as well....that means it is motivated, or perhaps justified, by the words in the Koran.

Indeed it won't and why on earth should it? Most merchant ships and tugboats are easy pickings for pirates in small, fast boats, launched from an ocean going mother ship, and armed with RPG's and sometimes 20mm or even 40mm guns?
Unless we do what I suggested (or some variant thereof) in #210, everyone will figure what the hell, let the Maritime Insurance companies pay for it. Sorta like the "art" of slip and fall in stores here in the US - juries know that there's insurance money so right or wrong they find for the plaintiff - let the insurance company pay.
But what happens when the day INEVITABLY comes that Maritime insurance companies EXCLUDE acts of Piracy from their policies?!
In my admittedly limited experience, rewarding criminals for their criminal acts NEVER reduces the crime rate. It only makes it go up.

"If there is no consequence for these actions, why should the pirates stop? There has to be a price for this activity that the pirate will pay. Otherwise, get used to this crap, it is not going to stop."

The City by the Bay is No. 1 on TurboTax's eighth annual list of Top 10 procrastinating cities, based on how many people used TurboTax's online service to file on the last two days of the filing season in April 2008.
Houston, which has been the No. 1 city three times -- more than any other locale -- came in at second place, while New York, which has been on the Top 10 list all eight years, came in at third.
Chicago, No. 1 last year, was in fourth place this year, followed by San Diego. Phoenix, Seattle, Los Angeles, Dallas and Las Vegas rounded out the list.

I'll repeat my post from Wikipedia about the First Barbary War, in which the U.S. switched from a policy of paying ransoms and tribute to a policy of attacking the pirates:
[Link: en.wikipedia.org...]
"Without the means or the authority to field a naval force necessary to protect their ships in the Mediterranean, the nascent U.S. government took a pragmatic, but ultimately self-destructive route. In 1784, the United States Congress allocated money for payment of tribute to the Barbary pirates and instructed her British and French ambassadors (John Adams and Thomas Jefferson, respectively) to look for opportunities to negotiate peace treaties with the Barbary nations. Unfortunately, the price demanded for these treaties far exceeded the amount that Congress had budgeted."

I don't think anyone here thinks these scum have any honor. We have said over the last few days, I know I have, that while these Pirates are very dangerous, they have an incentive to keep their hostages alive, only because they are worth more to them alive than dead. As a matter of fact keeping the hostage alive is keeping the Pirates alive. Some of us might make a joke every now and then, but we all know how serious this is.

I wouldn't doubt that these people might be in terrorist groups, they are still operating in piracy. And that fellow who brought up the Barbary pirates, yes they were Muslims running in piracy as well.
What we have here is state-sanctioned piracy, most likely (as close to a state as the Somali warlords can get). I'm not saying that we can't just send in the military and special teams and take them out, by all means I think its the best way. Hell its the way we took down the Barbary pirates, Thomas Jefferson sent in the Marines (....to the shores of Tripoli....).
I'm saying that THIS IS THE FACE OF MODERN PIRACY. Even pirates back in the 1600's-1800's were bloodthirsty cutthroats, none of this Walt Disney code of honor shit.

U.S. government policy prior to 1800: paying ransoms and tribute to the Barbary Pirates.
[Link: en.wikipedia.org...]
"The U.S. paid Algiers the ransom, and continued to pay up to $1 million per year over the next 15 years for the safe passage of American ships or the return of American hostages. Payments in ransom and tribute to the privateering states amounted to 20 percent of United States government annual revenues in 1800.
Jefferson continued to argue for cessation of the tribute, with rising support from George Washington and others. With the recommissioning of the American navy in 1794 and the resulting increased firepower on the seas, it became increasingly possible for America to refuse paying tribute, although by now the long-standing habit was hard to overturn."

But what about all those hostages on the Pirate Reinforcement Ships headed that way? I DON'T want the Captain to die - it's why I specified using SEALS in OUR small fast boats to free him - but at some point either you keep paying to keep hostages safe or you do that which will prevent other people from being taken hostage.
the other hostages are a very serious problem...what happens to them is anybody's guess...I'm determined to get our guy back...get the Navy out there, arm the merchants and do whatever it takes to prevent another incident like this to an American vessel...if the rest of the world won't help deal with in a big way then too bad for them....they can payoff til hell freezes over...we won't...that's my scenario

This is Obama's crisis, he wanted the job.
No disagreement there. I was just pointing out the issue is very complicated. BTW, this might be the first time it was a American flagged ship that was attacked, because they are rare, but not the first Americans held by the pirates. There are only three references to piracy on the WH website, the most recent of which was the 9th. The silence is deafening, and it's sending all kinds of messages - both to Americans overseas (you're on your own) and to our enemies (have fun, and we're contemplating going to the UN to gain consensus on how to write a letter).
The Administration is clueless on how to deal with this issue, even though the mechanics should be pretty simple since there's 200+ years of consensus on how to deal with pirates (when the French take to the offense, following in the footsteps of the Indian government, you know that military action is warranted). Of course, this Administration likes throwing 200 years of consensus and law on its head to push an agenda that is antithetical to generations of doctrine and policy, so they'll sit back and let the FBI deal with it (why do I think of Hans Gruber at a time like this?)

Go play with someone else
I can see by what you carry that you come from Barrytown
Don't believe I'm taken in by stories I have heard
I just read the daily news and swear by every word

That's the main radar, that can track and target a satellite in low orbit. It's phased array and the beam width and direction can be electronically steered.
At close ranges the radar itself could be used as an anti-personal weapon. Your microwave at home is around 1000W, this thing is 6,000,000W.

I am deeply concerned about the fact that the President has made no statement about this at all.
I can only hope that there are plans being made in the background that we don't yet know about.
He can't comment as he and Geitner are looking into Piracy themselves as a possible solution to government bailouts and as a way of boosting the economy. After all, people keep referring to the "pirate econonmy"... I thought that was the government charging me for everything I do...now I find out that holding boats hostage is actually an alternative to working for a living....who knew....

But your attached to the USN. It should be that way for any Merchant Ship traveling in "Harms Way".
Its interesting how few American Flag Merchant ships there are, and those that are almost always have a Government Contract of some sort.
To have an escort for every single ship in the entire region would be a tremendous burden on our military, we'd have to coordinate with just about every other Naval vessel in the area.

Obama Team Mulls Aims Of Somali Extremists
"Senior Obama administration officials are debating how to address a potential terrorist threat to U.S. interests from a Somali extremist group, with some in the military advocating strikes against its training camps. But many officials maintain that uncertainty about the intentions of the al-Shabab organization dictates a more patient, nonmilitary approach."

re: #407 BeerDrinking_VictoryMonkey
Is being seized by pirates less of an insurance issue, FFS!?!
Here's the pro and con from a longer piece:
On one hand, arms could escalate the situation so that more people are killed.
Still, he notes, “if you’re going to put weapons on a ship and train people to use them, you have to have plenty of firepower and know how to use it.”
“Use of armed crews who didn’t sign up to fight is a bad idea,” says Giles Noakes, chief maritime security officer for BIMCO, an international association of ship owners. “The industry believes very strongly that it’s not for the companies to train crews to use firearms and then arm them…. If you open fire, there’s potential for retaliation. Crews could get injured or killed, to say nothing of damage to the ship.”
Putting armed teams on board isn’t a good idea either, he says.
While it “might be successful initially, the pirates will look at this problem and come back with bigger weapons and fire them from a distance.”
One option is to have actual military teams from various countries on board, but the industry is on the fence about implementing it.
“With support vessels in proximity, it does make some sense,” Mr. Noakes says. “It’s not ideal. But it’s an idea that some companies and [ship] masters feel can work.”

Well, we could always kill the pirates in job lots by sinking their boats. Then go to their villages, eject everyone, burn the flammable, fill in the wells, and otherwise render the villages former villages.
Then, if we catch people from said village committing piracy later, we burn the village with the pirates in it.
Not pretty, bound to lead to much outcry, but it might send the pirates off to look for another line of work.
