Pizzagate: Not a Gate

Politics • Views: 3,019

Since people keep bringing up the silly “Pizzagate” controversy, here’s a post that should be read before going any further with this: Right Wing Slams Barack Obama For Ordering Pizza. Really.

I spoke with the restaurant’s manager, John Fitzgerald, and he gave me some things that we call “facts,” ones that cast Sommers’ trip in an entirely different light.

The best one is the first: Ace of Spades slammed Obama’s environmental cred for “jetting in” Pi’s chef, making it seem as though the guy was hopping a private gulfstream, or worse, partying down on Air Force One.

In fact, Chris Sommers flew commercial.
Not only that, he flew coach.
Not only that, he had already planned a business trip to DC, so the restaurant paid for his travel!

John also told me that Chris Sommers is one of the most dedicated people he knows to the environmental cause.

In fact, his restaurant buys carbon credits from a wind farm in Colorado.
Not only that, they recycle about 75% of their waste.
Not only that, John himself is going into the green building business. You couldn’t find a worse case for environmental hypocrisy.

Finally, Barack Obama isn’t saddling the American taxpayer with the tab for this feast. He’s picking up the tab, for local ingredients, out of his own pocket.

Pizzagate is nothing. Running us all off a cliff with misguided and idiotic policies IS something. Kept your pizza pie, mon Presidente, but please don't destroy what is left of our country.

My impression is that the initial story was a bit different (less complete?) than subsequent stories, and that was the one that bothered people.

However, people need to adjust as facts come out, and some did not.

Kudos for the CIC--giving a boost to a local St. Louis business with some publicity and for buying local ingredients--and paying for them out of his own pocket. This is a GOOD EXAMPLE of leadership.

Hopefully, the GOP will catch on that it can't win playing the Dems' game. I understand the mentality--attack constantly (as they did to Bush) and ultimately wear them down. That does not work when you do not have a willing accomplice in the press.

Even if this were true, it is kind of petty. We've got so many more substantive problems with Obama. We don't need to go out and find trivial things to disagree with them man. He's less than 90 days into his Presidency, and his foreign policy is already a shambles. Can you imagine how Obama would handle another attack like 9-11?

I can. Vacilate, weasel, appologize, self-flagelleate, send foreign aid...

The possibilities are endless, and none of them gives me any confidence in Obama. He's not only out of his pay-grade. He's out of his depth, and he is drowning.

Sadly, he will not drown alone.

Obama has the luxury of the MSM running interference for him. These little "mini would-be scandals" should be ignored because there will be no traction given by the "herd" that is the MSM in this country. I am not concerned about this kinda stuff. I am very concerned about how Obama gets a pass on everything else. His "Grand Tour of Europe" was a disaster, but you would never know that by reading or listening to most of the media here in the USA. What is it about this man that makes otherwise intelligent people rationalize and explain away obvious shortcomings and mistakes? Is their quest for power and control that driving? Is there infatuation of Obama so deep? They had no problem nailing Bush for everything real and imagined. They had no problem at all demonizing and downgrading everything put forth by Bush or a Republican control Congress.

I still find Obama to be a hypocrite and a person who constantly changes his mind, even when it comes to a simple topic such as pizza.

Just a few months ago, Obama had a different favorite pizza. I found this article at the disgusting liberal huffington post site:

Obama's Favorite Pizza Coming To Washington

The owners of the pizzeria that makes Barack Obama's favorite pies are heading to Washington, NBC 5's Anthony Ponce reports.

Italian Fiesta Pizza in Hyde Park is taking its spicy-sauced, thin crust pizza to D.C. for an event previewing the food at the inauguration:

[Link: www.huffingtonpost.com...]

The next time that somebody asks him what his favorite pizza is, he should just vote "present", which is what he usually does when confronted with difficult decisions.

I explain that no one was here an hour ago, and that we aren't even open yet. I suggest that maybe he called a different pizza joint. He adamantly insists that it was in fact my shop.

I tell him that he is either full of shit and trying to scam a free pizza, or he was talking to a ghost, because NO ONE was here an hour ago.

After a few seconds of silence, he begins to place an order, as if our conversation never happened. I politely tell him to fuck off, and hang up.

What Type of Web Commenter Are You?

The Troll -- Everyone knows this guy (and it's usually a guy), who intentionally visits sites in order to stir things up, provoke a furious reaction from other posters and then disappear. Classic examples are the Free Republic types who visit Daily Kos and vice versa.

The Droll -- The mainstay of all fun sites, this poster regularly tosses out clever comments, plays on words, one-liners or amusing pictures. There are a lot of these characters on places like Fark.com

The Relentless Pol -- Posters who can't join any discussion without immediately using it to make a political point, i.e., "The current lack of sunspots is the direct result of the Bush administration's failed policies."

The Skimmer -- The commenter, usually sour, who reads only a headline or sentence of a piece, draws exactly the wrong conclusion, and then embarks on an embarrassing rant.

The Trimmer -- A commenter who initially stakes a strong position, and then under withering attack from other commenters slowly backs off until he or she has completely abandoned that original position.

The Angry Man -- We all know this guy. His solution for almost any problem in the world is the summary execution, in as grisly a manner as possible, of every possible perpetrator.

The Dismisser -- The ultimate arrogant commenter, this person never actually engages with the topic, but merely declares it beneath anyone's interest, already resolved, or improperly stated -- and thus hardly worth the bother. The dismisser's only real message is: I'm smarter than you and you need to acknowledge that fact.

The Butt-Kisser -- Famous writers and bloggers get this one. It's the poster who just can't say enough about how brilliant was that last entry, how they wish they could say it half as good, etc. My assumption is that these folks are angling for some kind of personal relationship with the writer.

The Kumbaya -- These folks always show up two-thirds of the way through any heated on-line debate and ask, "Why can't we all just get along?" They are inevitably ignored or trashed.

The Parser -- What would we do without the Internet Grammar Police? These folks assiduously correct the online writings of others -- never quite catching on that the Web is designed to be fast, fresh and sloppy.

The Pretender -- Everybody is a pretender on the Web -- on the Internet, no one knows you're a dog, as the New Yorker cartoon said. Look at all of those made-up names and sexy icons. But some people just take it to pathological extremes. If the real world actually had that many war heroes, beauty contest winners, Mensa members and Olympic lovers, it would be a very different place.

The Defender -- Bloggers love these guys. When you are getting hammered by other posters, this is the guy who watches your back, supports you, and tells your enemies off & and does a better job of it than your real-life friends.

The Perv -- These guys show up a lot on celebrity sites, announcing some really disgusting thing they'd like to do to that famous figure & and of course will never get the chance to, thanks to stalker laws, restraining orders, and the fact they have no driver's license. It's a toss-up in my mind whether the Web is a good outlet for these guys, or the platform they've always dreamed of.

The Slut -- The best thing about slut commenters ("What's wrong with having sex with your best friend's dad?") is that they don't know they're sluts & until 800 other posters happily point it out to them.

The Boaster -- Few of us have ever driven a Lamborghini at 190 miles per hour. But this guy has. And can bench press 350 pounds. And dated Jessica Alba in high school. And &

The Tough Guy -- Remember the kid who talked tough, then ran off when confronted? The Internet is filled with these clowns, all secure in the knowledge that they will never be called to account.

Talked about this once with a former friend (lost touch, don't know where she went.) The trick with Tofu is squeezing out all the water it sits in. Once you do that, it is much better in texture and flavour apparently. A couple of clean dish towels and a heavy weight to press it down. Let sit on the counter a couple of hours before using.

So let's just review these new facts.

Obama isn't "jetting" him in - he's "jetting" himself in. He's not walking or hitchhiking.

This St. Louis pizza parlor owner coincidentally has "business" in Washington DC just at the same time as the President is in the mood for his pizza.

Obama, for some reason, is paying for the ingredients for a White House party for 140 out of his own pocket.

I agree it's all frivolous. It seems that Obama wanted something and found somebody willing to go to a lot of trouble to satisfy his cravings. Nothing new at all...

How's about they just kill the damn pirates and sink their "ship?"

Or would the Sauds complain that we are harming muslims? Or would the f*cking Eunuchs complain that it was a violation of international law?

The only people who had a clue how to deal with these pukes were the Indian Navy back in November. But I guess the UN isn't slobbering all over itself to create international war criminals out of Indian Navy guys.

My wife said exactly that five minutes ago.
I told her welcome to the group of people who get called "Rambo"!
She said "Why? The captain is probably thinking that. I would be."

Obviously, if the United States Navy hanged some eye-patched, peg-legged blackguard from the yardarm or made him walk the plank, pious senators would rise to denounce an America that no longer lived up to its highest ideals, and the network talking-heads would argue that Plankgate was recruiting more and more young men to the pirates' cause, and judges would rule that pirates were entitled to the protections of the U.S. Constitution and that their peg legs had to be replaced by high-tech prosthetic limbs at taxpayer expense. - Mark Steyn

This isn't a big deal in the grand scheme of things, however, lets imagine Palin had done it. The NYT would feature the story above the fold and there would be bar-graphs of exactly how much CO2 the "wolf-slaughterer" was using.

Agreed. If Palin had a chef from St. Louis making her pizza in Washington, it would be all over the news for weeks. Remember how we couldn't stop hearing about how the RNC spent a hundred thousand dollars buying clothes for wear while campaigning? As if there's something unusual about that. I mean, she has to wear nice clothes while campaigning, and I believe the clothes were all donated to charity after the election.

Meanwhile, BHO spent a totally unnecessary extra five million dollars renting out Invesco Field for his acceptance speech, despite the fact that the DNC had already rented out a perfectly good hall for the convention. And the newspapers thought that was a perfectly reasonable thing to do.

re: #230 sattv4u2

300 miles out to sea!?!?!?!

Yes, according to what I've read.
The big problem is that there are lots of legitimate boats, and some of those are not-so-legitimate, and some are simply pirate boats. I saw a web page with pictures, with the caption like "the one to the left is a suspected pirate vessel".

Which is why "sinking the mother ship" is problematic.
In this day and age, you have to "prove" it is only a "pirate ship".

I'm just fine, thanks for asking. We've a gorgeous Spring day in the valley with plenty of sinshine and Lil Miss and I enjoyed terrorizing the 'hood for a few hours. She'll need a *whispers* b-a-t-h by the end of the weekend though - her fur picks up every little thing and she ends up looking a tad scruffy.

What's going on in your corner of the Universe?

NEW DELHI, India - An Indian naval vessel sank a suspected pirate "mother ship" Wednesday in the Gulf of Aden and chased two attack boats into the night, officials said, in a day of escalating violence in the lawless seas.

Separate bands of pirates seized a Thai ship with 16 crew members and a Iranian cargo vessel with a crew of 25 in the area, where Somalia-based pirates appear to be attacking ships at will, said Noel Choong of the International Maritime Bureau's piracy reporting center in Malaysia.

Reading stories like this, I can't help but wonder if anyone peddling these "scandals" has ever read the story about the little boy who cried "Wolf!" and what eventually became of him.

This is the same garbage we've criticized the DK and DU of doing for the last many years - attempts to spin and twist every tiny, minute detail related to our opponents in the most insanely negative light possible.

It cost the Democrats the elections during Bush's first midterm and his re-election, until the Democratic party finally woke up, read the exit polls clearly showing disgust at such juvenile tactics, and locked the true loons in the closet during the last midterms and Presidential elections. And won.

It's even worse when the Right does it. The biases of the media are well known, after all, and stupid antics like this feed right into them. This is like throwing them red meat. They'll be putting this crap on the front page, inviting people to laugh at it for years to come.

Meanwhile, the elephant in the room - the enormous budget deficits being proposed, not just this year, but for the next decade, are not being addressed in any meaningful way at all by the GOP. An issue that is made for Conservative opposition, that has huge potential to engage public awareness and support for those opposing it, is circling the drain thanks to the idiots flogging the Tea Party movement and handing it over to an even more repulsive group of Flat Earthers, Truthers and Theocrats than those whipping these knuckle draggers into a rabid froth can ever possibly be.

Get used to being on the sidelines for years to come, if this is what is going to pass for political discourse from the Right. It's like watching a roomful of Kindergartener's who've missed their nap.

Here's a example I don't agree with, toss the weapons over and come back again ?

Pirate attack.

In private, U.S. officials acknowledged they lack the firepower to patrol the lawless Somali coast on their own. The Obama administration is considering changes to an international anti-piracy partnership proposed by the Bush administration in its last weeks.

Outside advisers have recommended expanding the task force to hunt pirate "mother ships" far from shore. These larger vessels shelter the small speedboats that pirates usually use to quickly close on a commercial ship and scramble aboard.

re: #190 sattv4u2

I've said it before and I'll say it again. Target the mother ship, the boat that their skiffs were launched from

NOT the ships that the pirates hikacked and still have hostages on
NOT the 'training bases" as to not harm innocents
NOT the lifeboat that Captain Phillips is on

THE MOTHER (EFN) SHIP

PERIOD

There is no "mother ship" to target. Like pirates throughout the ages, there isn't any central authority in charge of these attacks. It's a large group of thugs with somewhere between little and no organization, all operating independently, using a whole fleet of small craft that changes on a continual basis as new ones are stolen and old ones are deliberately sunk or abandoned. The few larger ships the pirates have at the moment changes all the time, and are normally those ships that have been seized; they are held for ransom, and contain yet more hostages.

In short, there's nothing to target under this plan. I believe the Navy is currently conducting detailed surveillance of the area, trying to determine which ships are legitimate and which may be under the control of various pirate factions, but there simply isn't any Pirate Queen Mary out there concealed by a Somalian Cloaking Device, housing an Evil Genius who directs all Pirate Activities and whose removal will bring all such enterprises to a screeching halt.

The way to halt the problem is to make piracy extremely unattractive. It's a crime of opportunity. Make it expensive or unappealing, and those involved will go find something else to do in a hurry.

I believe the Navy is playing this exactly right, for the moment. Patience and meticulous attention to detail will win the day in the end. Blowing random holes in the water isn't going to solve anything.

The friend who registered the account for me didn't really know of anything else to use - I doubt I would have selected it for this particular forum.

I have happened on the site once since then when registration was open, but didn't think re-registering just to change my nic was smiled upon.

Possible GOP contender in 2012 blasts Obama budget

A possible White House contender in 2012 said in the GOP's Saturday address that President Barack Obama and the Democrats who run Congress should lower taxes and hold down spending.

"Let hardworking American families keep more of what they earn by cutting taxes and reining in spending," said Gov. Tim Pawlenty, R-Minn. "It's just common sense."

I'm no fan of Pawlenty's. While he did manage to reduce taxes in Minnesota, he also violated property rights, imo, by signing a state wide smoking ban. He also supports ID in the classrooms. Other than that- he's correct in saying we should be cutting taxes and reducing spending.

Possible GOP contender in 2012 blasts Obama budget

I'm no fan of Pawlenty's. While he did manage to reduce taxes in Minnesota, he also violated property rights, imo, by signing a state wide smoking ban. He also supports ID in the classrooms. Other than that- he's correct in saying we should be cutting taxes and reducing spending.

Did Pawlenty do much to help his fellow Minnesotan, ex democrat, ex New Yorker Sen. Norm Coleman's campaign against comic clown Al Franken?

This is what we're looking at again. Distraction and watch the birdie and Shiny Things! The msm is not going to expose him, and we're discussing pizza. Here the right wing blogosphere has a chance to make a difference in being a watch dog, and the opportunity goes to waste when pizza becomes the focus.

It's one reason I'm so frustrated by the ridiculous path so many on the right seem to be headed. The Democrats are failing horribly. They're providing all the necessary fodder for their own downfall. And what are so many people doing? Getting hung up on conspiracies about his birth certificate, getting worked up over a bow, ordering pizza - none of that matters! Worse, none of it helps.

The Republican Party needs a strong leader to get the party back on track. This pandering to extremists of any stripe isn't going to do a damn bit of good.

Hey there..Are you a local also?

No such luck, just a passer-through who likes food. Such a nice little town, Yountville. I'd like to spend some more time there even if I couldn't eat at French Laundry.

It was the Yountville Cafe...It was never a brothel when I was a kid and the Saloon was just north across the street..

I just checked their website out of curiosity. Apparently the saloon and brothel periods preceded the laundry period, and the laundry period was in the 20's. So, unless you're at least a hundred years old, you don't have to accuse your parents of concealing from you the existence of a brothel in Yountville!

I gather that these mother ships vary from the size of that thing in the photo, to what would be a small commercial fishing boat in the US, up to small (and decrepit) old freighters. What does it matter, really, none of them would take a single five-inch shell without sinking.

Not all the "mother ships" are alike, some are bigger craft that were stolen, but most are wooden fishing boats. Just get the impression of big ships cruising around loaded up with small boats out of your head. The small wooden boats can pass as fishermen, anything bigger will get attention.

Vatican denies it vetoed US choice for ambassador

The Vatican is denying that it has rejected several candidates for U.S. ambassador to the Holy See because of their support for abortion rights.

Vatican spokesman the Rev. Federico Lombardi said Friday that he checked the reports in the American and Italian media and there is no truth to them.

He also told the U.S. Catholic News Service that no names of proposed ambassadors had reached the Vatican from Washington.

The reports underline possible tensions between the Vatican and the government of President Barack Obama because of its support for abortion rights and stem cell research, a reversal the policies of the George W. Bush administration.

It might not be that easy. Hostage situations are tricky. There's a lot of water to patrol with a lot of innocent people/fisherman boating around. Wiping out thier land bases has the same problem. It's also more difficult without cooperation from local government. Somebody will take care of the situation eventually.

I had some hopes for Steele, but he hasn't been impressive so far. His hip hop comments were just bizarre and trivial. I don't care what his personal position on abortion is, but he handled that complete situation poorly. His attack on Rush Limbaugh was pointless. He lets the media shape his messages and doesn't counter them when they twist what he says.

Update: Manchester link to plots across Europe

THE alleged Al-Qaeda plot to bomb shopping centres in Manchester over Easter had been ordered by a fugitive British terrorist, investigators believe.

Rashid Rauf, identified by MI5 as Al-Qaeda’s “director of operations” in Europe, is suspected of planning the bombing as part of a wider “master plan” for a number of attacks on cities across the Continent.

Multiple cells, comprising at least 12 terrorists each, were dispatched last year from Pakistan’s tribal areas to conduct a series of atrocities in the UK, France, Belgium and elsewhere, an Al-Qaeda informant has told MI5.

compared to an 16 foot single outboard engine skiff out 300 miles from shore, you would absolutly know the difference

No one has suggested 16 foot out board mother ships, nor have I posted a link to one. the main point I'm trying to get across, is the motherships look just like the hundreds of small fishing boats. They are not real ships, flying a pirate flag. A half dozen- dozen armed Somali ex fishermen in a skiff, towing a speedboat and you have a mothership.

It's like the convenience store knockoffs here. Nobody resists, chances of getting caught are slim, chances of doing time are slimmer, and whatever you get is more than you had. And it is more exciting than laboring all day. When pirates start getting shot and their boats blown out of the water-then it will no longer look quite so appealing.

Well, there is some truth to that line of reasoning. Commercial fishing fleets travel the world and over fish everywhere. Our demand for fish is insatiable. And, many fishing trawlers come well within the 12 mile territorial limit to get the fish. With a country like Somalia, who is going to stop them? The local guys that used to go out and catch fish near the shore are out of business. That is not just in Somalia, but MOST of Africa, for the same reason.

BUT, that does not explain or excuse the piracy we are seeing here. This is not former fisherman that have resorted to a life of high seas crime because of evil commercial fishing companies. This is a cultural breakdown and a devolution into anarchy. These guys are doing it with impunity now because they can do it with impunity. Until someone stops them, it will continue. And, what country on this earth has the capability and/or has the inclination to do such a thing? There is only one I can think of, but judging by the current leadership, I can't see much being done.

Amazing how everything about this pizza scandal comes out smelling like roses. The owner of the pizza joint just happened to be going to DC at the same time as Obama wanted one of his pizzas? And a pizza joint buys carbon credits? I didn't think anyone was falling for the carbon credit scam anymore but it just goes to show you there is a sucker born every minute.

Personally I don't believe any of it.

Yep. I sure wouldn't deal with a pizza joint if I knew they were voluntarily pissing money down a rat hole buying carbon credits. Why should I pay extra for a pizza just to allow the owner of the pizzeria to have warm fuzzies?

The story also says this fellow is going into the "green" building business. That could cover a lot of ground, but it's a fair bet that if something is being done in a "green" way, and promoted as such, then there is a subsidy involved, or else the product will be significantly more expensive than its "non-green" competitor. Granted, that isn't always the case, but its the way the smart money bets.

It's one of those things - eating it goes against just about every instinct a normal, healthy person has, but, if you can conquer the weak, fearful, animal part of the brain, it's quite a nice little side dish.

IIRC, it is not kosher, as there is fish sauce in it, which is usually made with shellfish. I would imagine that there is a way to make it kosher, by finding a kosher fish sauce, but the one time I did smell it was enough for me!;)

Call me a pizzagate troofer, but....

Mangialardo, 27, hopes to carry his own dough - enough for 20 pizzas - on the plane with him to Washington. Getting a cooler full of ingredients past airport security could be difficult, though, even if it is for the commander-in-chief.

Even if something gets confiscated, Mangialardo - who started in the pizza business as a teenager - should be well equipped once he reaches the White House. At his disposal will be a full-service commercial kitchen built to prepare dinner for 140 and hors d'oeuvres for more than 1,000....

Sommers is coordinating this week's visit with Love and Sam Kass, an assistant White House chef the Obamas brought with them to Washington.

The White House confirmed that the crew from Pi will be cooking lunch for the president and his family Friday afternoon.

The press would have been all over him, night and day, for several weeks. We would have had hoards of reporters interviewing laid off workers, asking them what they thought about Bush's expensive gourmet tastes. We would have had contrasting footage of New Orleans homeless people going dumpster diving for dinner. And I love this quote, "He’s picking up the tab, for local ingredients, out of his own pocket." Who the heck do you think puts that money into his pocket? Hmm, let's see...Could it be us, the U.S. taxpayers? Obama: Global cooperation needed to solve problems

WASHINGTON (AP) - Global cooperation is needed to tackle the financial meltdown, climate change, nuclear proliferation and other pressing problems, President Barack Obama said Saturday.

Fresh from his first trip overseas White House pizza party as president, prepared at no cost to taxpayers by the owner of a St. Louis pizzeria known for being the President's favorite, who coincidentally was flying in coach with an assistant at his own expense to Washington DC on business exactly the same weekend as the White House had hoped for an environmentally-friendly pizza, Obama used his radio and Internet address to ask people in the United States and around the world to focus on areas of common interest.

I know it's a crazy idea, but how about doing a bit of research. This isn't a strip mall pizza shop you find in any little town. It's a fairly upscale place, and numerous news articles verify different parts of the story. There are any number of reasons for the owner to be on a business trip - conventions, meeting with current or prospective investors, looking for new equipment/suppliers, etc. The conspiracy bullshit really comes across as idiotic.

Was he? The original story in the British newspaper never said. The only one stating that was the restaurant manager in a phone call from Christopher.

To reiterate my #371;

And nowhere in that story (Christophers) did I read the original story came from Mail Online, World News.
(Obamas fly in chef 860 miles... just to make pizza)

So, if I understand it all correctly, the newspaper is 100% in error and Ace of Spades was wrong in quoting the paper. BUT, the word of the restaurant manager... over the phone... was 100% correct? And Timmy Christopher accepts everything said over the phone as gospel. All the story about carbon credits, flying coach, restaurant footing the bill, 75% recycle rate, etc... This is all taken at face value. Over the phone. And the British newspaper got it all wrong in order to slam the POTUS, whom everybody over there apparently loves according to our papers.

In any event, this hardly qualifies as a scandal by most peoples standards nor worth too much worry. ;-)>

It's wonderful such an amazing coincidence - a St. Louis pizzeria owner going to Washington DC on business - led to this serendipitous gustatory experience for the Obama family.

I sense some divine hand at work here.

I read it was not all that mysterious. The pizza owner had been contacted by a White House staffer complimenting him on his pie. Later when the guy was scheduling a DC trip, they came up with the idea of the pizza party.

How do you know it wasn't written by "Dan Rather?" Actually, that would make more sense; Dan Rather posed as this "Tommy Christopher!" Hah! Have you ever heard a phonier sounding name? And that would take away the need to even lie about the restaurant manager!

Just answering!

well, if he had used the name Christopher Robin, then I might get a little suspicious. ;-)>

Maybe someone has already pointed this out, but you can't seriously think that America was better equipped to handle the pirate threat two hundred years ago than it is now.

I think they respected life back then about as much as we do now. Once the captain's fate is settled we are more free to act against the pirates .

re: #536 Outrider

Sarcasm usually works.

The only point most have been attempting to make is Obama didn't pay transportation and expenses to have a pizza party. For all his failures and shortcomings, he is hardly a Roman Caesar with their extravagances. More than a little narcissistic, but not a Caesar.

The main point I have been attempting to make is the slamming of Ace of Spades who used a story from a British paper, and Christopher using a phone call to invalidate the story and crucify all right wingers with it.

Please no Caesar on the pizza!

If one left-winger making a phone call to the restaurant owner invalidates the right-winger and floats your boat (trying to balance the alternating piratical theme of this wacky thread), I'm pleased for you.

Since you raise the issue, I don't think anything has been "proven" one way or the other. What's more, I don't really care. I'm not the one who started the post to highlight Tommy's virtues (he who is not Dan Rather) as a hard-hitting investigative reporter.

Clearly, since Dan Rather actually wrote the "article," and everyone knows that every single word Dan Rather writes is a nefarious lie, including "and" and "the," there was no need for any "phone call" at all. This so-called "manager" probably doesn't even exist.

No, what's been proved is that the owner flew there at his own expense, in coach (which everybody knows leaves less of a carbon footprint than First), with an assistant and one or other's girlfriend, at least according to People. He's just the kind of environmentally-aware pizza-man that I'd expect my President to support.

Nothing at all Caesar-like about it at all to have one of your minions small-businessmen fly in to serve you. And a million dollars (conservatively) worth of good publicity for the pizza-chain owner. Good for him.

I'll even bet there'll be some St. Louis Lizards heading there tonight for the Obama Special.

Yah while I find the story odd. If I had a product that I knew the President liked I would find a way to make a business trip there and give him a present. If I could arrange it. Seems like logistics in getting to know the President would be tough. The free advertising would make it worth while. Even a signed receipt would make a good story.

Maybe someone has already pointed this out, but you can't seriously think that America was better equipped to handle the pirate threat two hundred years ago than it is now. The pirates haven't changed all that much from then, really. They aree Mohammedans on small boats reletively close to shore. They have guns that fire cartridges, and they have internal combustion engins on their boats, but that is really about it. I've not seen anything to say that these guys are particularly well organized (or even organized at all).

The chains we are wearing are of our own manufacture. It is time we shook them off and deal with the problem.

It's prime danger zone. The USS Cole is the example. Al Quaida would like nothing better then to use a boat as a bomb. Anything in the area of operation is a threat. I would just slowly grow a presence there and intercede any and all boat traffic. Take their guns and boats from them. Send them back to shore. Freeze their bank accounts.

As for me, I don't care. Several MSM outlets got it wrong about Obama having him "flown in" before the right-wing blogger did. Surprise - the MSM gets things wrong!

Obviously, if it weren't for that, ahem, other business reason, Mr. Sommers would not have made that long trip just to meet with the President of the United States of America. Yeah, I'll buy that. Why waste valuable time and money if the only reason for the trip was to serve the most powerful man on the face of the earth? Tommy Christopher didn't ask the obvious follow up question, "What, exactly, was the nature of Mr. Sommers' business in DC that was apparently more important than meeting with the President?"

Did the thought never occur that Mr. Sommers, being a true carbon credit weenie, might have realized the hypocrisy of flying across the country to make a pizza for the President and "found" another reason to be there on business? I can tell you this much. If I owned a pizza restaurant anywhere in the world, and the President of the United States wanted me to make him a pie, I would certainly find a way to get there and justify the trip. Receiving the press, notoriety, and promotional value that comes with serving the President is a pretty darned good business reason alone.

I agree with you. As for your last sentence, that does seem to be what the majority are arguing in this particular thread. Again, if the right-wing blogger made the mistake, it's a mistake previously made by a number of major media outlets, i.e. Obama "had them flown in" or words to that effect.

I continue to think it's more naive to accept at face value whatever the pizzeria management has allegedly told a left-wing blogger (or is he an AOL reporter?) over the phone, but apparently that's worth a post 'round these parts and anybody who doubts it is into conspiracy theories. Fah!

From the St. Louis Dispatch-

The White House confirmed that the crew from Pi will be cooking lunch for the president and his family Friday afternoon.

but I thought he was there for a business trip?
Maybe the crew from Pi are all on a business trip together?

Mangialardo, 27, hopes to carry his own dough - enough for 20 pizzas - on the plane with him to Washington. Getting a cooler full of ingredients past airport security could be difficult, though, even if it is for the commander-in-chief.

Local ingredients?

I think Tommy Christopher is also cherry- picking some facts here.

569 Charles Johnson  Sat, Apr 11, 2009 7:40:31pm

I love this conspiracy theory! It's so tasty.

Pizza from St. Louis restaurant is headed to the White House.

It's a rare honor for anyone other than the president's personal staff to cook at the White House kitchen, especially for an establishment that offers recycled cardboard to-go boxes instead of fine dining.

But Obama, whose culinary tastes lean more toward comfort food than gourmet cuisine, enjoys pizza enough that he's calling across the country to get a slice.

And the staff at Pi is thrilled to deliver.

"What can you say?" said Pi partner Ryan Mangialardo. "It's incredible."

Obviously, this is a scheme perpetrated by Obama to waste the taxpayers' money and be all arrogant and wasteful.

It's monstrous. America -- no, the world -- may never recover from this egregious abuse of presidential privilege.

Or, maybe you believe the phone conversation with White House staff went something like, "Yes, I would just love to make some pizzas for the President but please tell him that he will have to wait a few weeks/months until I can combine the trip with some other legitimate business reasons so we don't needlessly impinge upon our fragile environment." There's no time like the present to begin developing those skills. Your first exercise is to give us any plausible scenario under which the article you cited could be true. The way I see it, the conversation would have gone something like this:

Pizza maker: "Yes, I would love to make some pizzas for the President. Fortunately, St. Louis restaurateurs frequently have business needs in Washington DC, so I will convert my upcoming visit there into a two-for-one deal, thereby lessening the impact on my beloved planet. And, thank my lucky stars, it just so happens that the date of the trip I was planning coincides exactly with the President's availability date."

White House Staff: "There is only one thing we insist upon - this trip must not be on taxpayer dime. The President will be paying for it from his own pocket - not with his salary that the taxpayers provide - but with his book earnings. And it is very important that you tell your restaurant manager this fact in case any bloggers might call."

Yeah, that all seems highly probable. Ace is such an idiot not to buy into it.

It is the same concept except instead of Pope Innocent the III getting your cash some liberal business associate of Al Gore's gets the payoff.

Meanwhile, Obama has a staff of private chefs yet he needs to have special pizza makers. Gosh most Americans would be happy to have someone come in and clean up the kitchen after they cooked.

Charles -- I don't post often but just can't avoid this topic any longer.

I don't believe this pizza story either; just employ Occam's razor. Obama let it be known he likes this pizza, the pizza-maker responds by sending the "chef" to the White House. The half-witted PR people attempt to cover up this minor display of presidential privilege with some half-witted explanations. The whole episode is far easier to explain this way than accepting all the coincidental calendar dates, jet schedules, and even carbon credits!

And I may as well go full out and say I think Obama bowed to that Saudi king or prince or whatever he is. I saw the video and the feeble explanations from the half-witted PR people did nothing to dissuade me from seeing the bow. Sure, some folks maintain Obama merely "bent over" for the King. Well, OK, Obama seems to bend over for a lot of folks these days -- so maybe that's it.

Hopefully I'm not banned for just expressing my opinion, but if so, I'll be in good company.

Sommers first met Obama in 2007 at a private fundraiser in Ladue. There, he struck up a friendship with Reggie Love, a former college basketball star who has become one of Obama's closest aides.

When Obama returned to St. Louis in October for a campaign event that brought more than 80,000 to the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial, it was Love who suggested the candidate try Pi for lunch.

Why a gaffe? Flying in a pizza chef from half way across the country to cook pizza's has the a certain ineffable whiff of rock star mentality. Seriously ... if Bill Gates did that, wouldn't you think less of him? Or Rush Limbaugh? Or Senator Specter? Isn't that the sort of thing you'd expect from a Hollywood starlet or a spoiled rocker? Doesn't it fly in the face of the whole "Americans need to learn how to conserve meme" pushed by The One? Doesn't it contradict the sanctimonious puerility of Michelle's potemkin vegatable garden? Why do we not point it out when its Barack Obama? Why carry this gaffe-meister's water?

That begs the next question. Why keep track of gaffes? No President ever needed more reining in than Barack Obama. For those who say "we should be talking about x, y or z" that he has done, I have news ... those trains, planes and automobiles have already left the station/airport/garage (i.e,, the Stimulus, the Census, the craven pandering the America's enemies). Humor and mockery is the best weapon against Obama ... and Mr. Pizza Guy Goes to Washington is something we shouldnt be afraid to tease him about. It's right up there with Bill Clinton closing down LAX to get his hair done, and Nancy Pelosi calling up the Pentagon demanding jets that don't have to lay over on her flights back to the Bay.

You can tell it's a gaffe when someone like Tommy Christopher has to do an over-the-top, hard-to-believe, laying-it-on-with-a-shovel story that purports to set forth the "facts" that somehow got omitted from the MSM version. Christopher doesn't seem like too reliable a source anyhow - sort of the smug, "I'm smarter than you", in-crowd. Funny how his paean to Fitzgerald's eco-virtue ("he flew coach!" ahhhh! what a martyr!) fails to include that he traveled with his business "partner" .... sheesh, how many guys does it take to make a pizza .. I'm sure both of them had important business meetings in Washington!

So, it ain't a gate. But it's a gaffe. And we should never, ever fail to point them out. The only way of defeating the Barack agenda (insane domestic spending and craven foreign diplomacy) in the absence of an organized congressional opposition is Death By A Thousand Cuts (YES - THIS IS ONLY A METAPHOR!). To nitpick the cuts and say they make conservatives look bad (I don't know conservatives who fly in two slick pizza guys to back specialty pies in their overs... I'm a Red Baron guy myself), serves little purpose to me. To do so is to keep letting Obama slide at our peril when it really counts.

I feel a bit silly now. Normally I dig a bit into these sorts of things before biting, but I bit on this one, hook line and sinker.

Why a gaffe? Flying in a pizza chef from half way across the country to cook pizza's has the a certain ineffable whiff of rock star mentality

Can you not read? The pizza guy's company paid for the travel, as he was already taking a D.C. trip. The whole rest of your diatribe falls apart on that one bit of information alone.

Christopher doesn't seem like too reliable a source anyhow - sort of the smug, "I'm smarter than you", in-crowd.

Then I'm sure you can point us to information rebutting his claims. If not, you're just speculating. . . engaging in the exact sort of behavior you're accusing Christopher of.

Being a chef myself and a retailer of pizza there was a real simple solution to wanting a great pizza. The White House has an excellent culinary staff, even though Obamo brought in his personal chef to "supplement" the current executive chef that happens to be the first female exec. chef for the White House, Bush hired her. Back to the solution it's called a recipe, they have been around for hundreds of years and seem to be able to be mailed or even shared across the internet without any use of carbon credits etc.. I wonder about the security of having so many outsiders in the White House kitchen ...
