Keith Jarrett Trio: ‘Oleo’

Video • Views: 2,075

You might have to be a musician yourself to appreciate it, but in the first minute of this video, Jack DeJohnette turns the rhythm inside out in a way I can only describe as “totally sick.”

Keith Jarrett, Gary Peacock, and Jack. Possibly the best piano trio ever, in a playful mood, blowing on the Sonny Rollins standard “Oleo.”

From the DVD: Live at Open Theater East.

Looks like he has Jarrett flummoxed at about the 40 second mark. He closes it off like a faucet and then opens the floodgates a few seconds later. It's like a point guard rocking back and forth and then blowing by the defender.

I recall Ringo making a comment in an interview about some of the shows the Beatles did where the screaming was so loud, all he could do was hold onto the backbeat. You have to stick with the drummer, or the song becomes a mess.

I love this video.

I like performers such as Jarrett and Emmanuel who can't help but show their enthusiasm and energy while they play. It's occasionally creepy, but it's very real.

re: #9 Devil's Advocate

Mosquitoes spread malaria, which is a much larger killer of people in Africa than AIDS. DDT is the cheapest and most effective insecticide in eradicating mosquitoes. It also is extremely persistent in the environment, meaning that it kills mosquitoes for several years after it's applied. It takes about ten years to break down chemically.

Malaria and Yellow Fever killed many Americans until they were brought under control in the late 19th Century. DDT was used in the U.S. to successfully control mosquitoes. After we had our malaria problem under control, Rachel Carson discovered that DDT hurt bird reproduction. DDT then was banned globally.

Malaria remained a problem in many places, however, especially in Africa. Cost/benefit analysis would suggest that saving human lives should trump concerns about bird reproduction for the ten years or so it would take to eradicate mosquitoes and malaria in Africa. Instead, green extremists oppose such use, arguing that bird reproduction is more important than human life.

RAMADI, Iraq — As the Marine Corps shrinks its footprint in Iraq’s western desert, Iraqi community leaders here are publicly voicing worries about what will happen once the Americans are gone.

[Link: www.navytimes.com...]

Iraqi security chiefs have spoken in recent interviews of their worries that some of the thousands of Iraqis being freed from U.S. custody under the security pact will revitalize the insurgency.

“Very soon, there won’t be any Marines coming here,” he said.

The remark drew murmurs of dismay.

Kareem Arak, the council president, shook his head, telling Shaw: “We feel many bad things are coming.”

Wheeler was a member of the Nebraska National Guard and an infantryman aboard the British transport ship HMT Rohna when it was attacked Nov. 26, 1943, by German bombers

What Wheeler saw was something that had rarely been seen — at least by anyone alive. It was a Henschel Hs-293, a remote-controlled, rocket-powered glide bomb with wings.

For the next 50 years, he was prohibited from talking about the incident.

New York had its own pirate back in the 17th century, the notorious Captain William Kidd:

[Link: en.wikipedia.org...]

"During the War of the Grand Alliance, on orders from the province of New York, Massachusetts, Kidd captured an enemy privateer, which duty he was commissioned to perform off of the New England coast. Shortly thereafter, Kidd was awarded £150 for successful privateering in the Caribbean. One year later, "Captain" Culliford, a notorious pirate, had stolen Kidd's ship while he was ashore at Antigua in the West Indies. In 1695, William III of England replaced the corrupt governor Benjamin Fletcher, known for accepting bribes of one hundred dollars to allow illegal trading of pirate loot, with Richard Coote, Earl of Bellomont. In New York City, Kidd was active in the building of Trinity Church, New York."

Boston Globe worried over ads
Letter seeks to soothe sponsors about paper’s future

The Boston Globe is trying to calm fears of nervous advertisers that the region’s largest newspaper may soon be the nation’s largest newspaper to go out of business.

“We understand the recent news about The Boston Globe may have caused you some concern,” wrote Globe publisher P. Steven Ainsley and chief ad boss Samuel Martin in a letter to advertisers yesterday.

“Let us assure you that despite these difficult times we are very committed to continuing as your marketing partner,” they wrote, noting news of the Globe’s financial woes have “jolted many people.”

Warren waver on Prop 8 stuns leaders

Rick Warren's Shocking Turnaround

"When it came time to rally support for California’s Proposition 8, Pastor Rick Warren’s message was loud and clear: “Now let me say this really clearly: We support Proposition 8," the evangelical leader said via video message to his 22,000-member church the week before the anti-gay marriage measure went into effect in November. But now Warren may have changed his mind about gay marriage. In an interview with Larry King, Warren said he "never once even gave an endorsement” of the proposition, and that he was just “a pastor talking to his people” who, all of a sudden, was turned into the “poster boy for anti-gay marriage." “I wrote to all my gay friends—the leaders that I knew—and actually apologized to them,” Warren said. Leaders of the evangelical community and members of Warren’s church are bewildered at his turnaround on the issue. “He is being politically correct instead of biblically courageous,” one pastor said."

The troops will get an extra treat at AAFES’ Reel Time Theater: The actors playing the new recruits on the Starship Enterprise will also attend — Captain Kirk (Chris Pine), Spock (Zachary Quinto), Uhura (Zoe Saldana), Nero (Eric Bana), Dr. McCoy (Karl Urban) and Lt. Sulu (John Cho). Director J.J. Abrams also will be on hand.

Without a doubt. That gestures pays off huge dividends for guys that work by the sweat of their brow.

When we were having our house built, I went out of my way to feed those guys well.

I wanted them happy.

I think it was Ted Nugent who said " Oh those syncopated drummers, they're goal is to lose you." you can see that on Chick's face as it turns inside out.

As a matter of fact, my Dad had a tattoo of a naked lady on his arm. He used to tease the neighborhood kids by telling them it was a tattoo of my Mother. LMAO. My daughter and I are considering getting the same exact tattoo...just to show our respect. lol lol He would laugh his ass off I we did that. lol

Not a musician, didn't understand what Charles meant by turning the rhythm inside out.

But I can recognize and appreciate exceptional talent, and also - watching the faces - these guys are completely involved in enjoying what it is they're doing.

To me, the music sounded like it was being played backwards at times. Maybe that's what he meant. Not my cup of tea. But then again, most of the stuff I listen to makes my friends and family cringe or giant question marks appear all around their heads.

Uber ...right above this box I am typing in, there is a slot right under your username that says: Email. Type your email in there and then click the little box right next to it, then post something here to me. When your post pops up, your nick will be blue.

if only there was a way to edit out the tourettes.

arrived very early at a club once to grab a good seat to see jarrett. after the first tune i moved to the back of the room and closed my eyes or focused on the other players. much better. utterances inaudible, writhing partially blocked by piano lid.

150 Pastorius  Sun, Apr 12, 2009 12:38:43pm

That is beautiful playing from DeJohnette. My favorite DeJohnette is Bayou Fever, from his album Directions with Abercrombie, Gomez, and Lester Bowie. I also love his playing on his solo album Oneness.

DeJohnette, Gadd, Elvin Jones, Stanton Moore, and Brian Blade are my favorite drummers. Despite my moniker, I am not a bass player. I am a drummer. Pastorius is my favorite musician, and, by the way, he was a kick-ass drummer (which not many people know).
