There's big money behind the anti-evolution people. There are three posts on the front page that mention evolution or creationism, and our Google context-driven ads are suddenly serving up glossy, expensive advertisements for ludicrous anti-evolution books and websites, completely with stupid pictures of chimpanzees.

So far I haven't seen a single pro-evolution ad. The money is all coming from the fanatics.

And I don't mind at all if they want to give me their money, for relentlessly criticizing them.

Poor puppy... growing up with satan’s spawn... a gift from GOD like a puppy should never be placed in a home such as that one. If hussein is not the Antichrist... he is a first cousin.

Yes, The Good News magazine pops up. On their Evolution (front) page, they have this quote:

"What strange rationale makes some physicists accept the inconceivable electron as real while refusing to accept the reality of a Designer on the ground that they cannot conceive of Him?" (quoted by Scott Huse, The Collapse of Evolution, 1997, pp. 159-160).

I did the oil drop experiment that most physics majors do in first year lab... at the time I had no idea I was measuring the "inconceivable"... silly me.

The Good News is published by the United Church of Christ denomination.

On their Evolution web pages, specifically under The Societal Consequences of Darwinism, we find:

Later Adolf Hitler indeed applied the Darwinian concept of the "survival of the fittest" to the human race. During World War II the Nazis forcibly sterilized more than 2 million people and began systematically exterminating people whom Hitler considered to be inferior. The Nazis justified their atrocities by rationalizing that they were doing mankind a service with "genetic cleansing" to improve the races.

As long as evolution—with its implications of amorality and the survival-of-the-fittest mentality among "superior" and "inferior" races —is accepted and believed, genocide, as sporadic ethnic cleansings in various parts of the globe show, will have a scientific justification, even though most believers in Darwinian theory would object to this conclusion.

The FDIC has created the Deposit Insurance National Bank of Greeley (DINB), Greeley, CO to facilitate the resolution of New Frontier Bank, Greeley, CO.

It's the first time since 1982 that the FDIC had to create a temporary bank. I think it means no other bank wanted to take over NFB's operations.

I love listening to her too. There's a 5 part (or so) series on youtube of an interview she does with Donahue way back when that is worth taking the time to view. She embodies the archetypal American woman of days gone by ...we need more like her instead of the Hillarys and Michelles of todays world.

Some information from Google Adsense (which LGF uses, no? Someone correct me.)

As many of you know, our program policies prohibit any means of encouraging users to click on Google ads or bringing excessive attention to ad units. For example, sites may not contain phrases such as "click the ads," "support our sponsors," "visit these recommended links," or other similar language that could apply to the Google ads on your site. In addition, publishers are not permitted to label the Google ads with text other than "sponsored links" or "advertisements."

However, as the comments by us mere viewers are not necessarily the opinions of the blog owner...

re: #17 Charles

There's big money behind the anti-evolution people. There are three posts on the front page that mention evolution or creationism, and our Google context-driven ads are suddenly serving up glossy, expensive advertisements for ludicrous anti-evolution books and websites, completely with stupid pictures of chimpanzees.

So far I haven't seen a single pro-evolution ad. The money is all coming from the fanatics.

And I don't mind at all if they want to give me their money, for relentlessly criticizing them.

I was about to ask, whassup with the anti-evolution banner ads?

I knew there was a reason I did not sign up for adsense on my website (the Jewish history site, Lizards, not the Vicious Babushka)

I also had to remove all the "Amazon recommends" banners because there is no way to keep Holocaust-denial and Finkelstein titles from showing up.

The last sentence you wrote does not fit with your philosophy as I interpreted things all day yesterday. ( I believe I am a "Rambo", among other things ... )

I'm not sure "business ashore" is a wonderful plan. The country doesn't have a cohesive government, and at best you're talking about groups more loosely knit than even Al-Queda cells.
If you think a case can be made regarding "Iraq distracting us from the real war on terror", this is even worse. It's also less connected.

111 Dustyvet  Sun, Apr 12, 2009 12:04:05pm

From now on, though, the “negotiations” should be us telling the pirates and their envoys that if they surrender, we’ll let them live. If not, no quarter. That should be our first and last offer. If we keep dancing around with Somali “elders” and treat pirates like bank robbers, we’re going to be doing a lot more of these negotiations in the future.

One of the nuttier ideas from your advertisers (ahem...), as found in the college publication, under an entry entitled Answers from Genesis - Part 1:

Scriptures indicate that we share some of the same characteristics of God our Father, only in a more limited way. Some of our similarities include our general shape, having dominion (rulership) over the earth, and the ability to think and communicate on far higher levels than animals.

It should be noted that mainline Christian groups consider Armstrongism to be an aberration.

To my Christian Brothers and Sisters;

Take note of what Charles is saying, considering what your words and actions have had.

The Spirit gives life, the letter kills. Please learn the difference, and that the sword of the Spirit is first applied to ones self, dividing the soul and the spirit.

Oh, and thank you for all the damage to the Testimony of Christ with your ill considered and misapplied use of God's Word.

Of course when I started out, the rows and rows of racks were one computer, not hundreds.

Fleecing the Tea Party flock...
Tea Party Protests Create Online Sales Boom

Online retailers are recording hundreds of thousands of dollars in sales of mugs and sweats, buttons and bumper stickers, with much of the proceeds going toward organizing the tax-day tea parties, takeoffs on the original 1773 protest of British taxes.
...
Custom online retailer Zazzle said tea party products have been flying off its presses at an "obscene" rate, propelling them into the top sphere of items it sells online.
...
Eric Odom,( A Paulian - ed) who administers the Tax Day Tea Party Web site and is helping organize and fund multiple events, said they were "ecstatic" with the results they're seeing at their online store, which has recorded $48,000 in sales.

"We try to fuel that money right back into costs involved in the Tea Party effort," Odom said, which includes renting and reserving space, making signs and covering transportation costs.
...

Here's the best one...

Yet some organizers are seeing costs outweigh their profits -- and are choosing to operate at a loss.

Taylor is partnering with the Augusta, Ga.-based Reagan.org to send tens of thousands of tea bags north to Washington for a massive tax day tea dump. Though Reagan.org is asking for about $1 per bag, they estimate they'll end up losing money in the transaction.

"What we figure is that we'll probably end up losing a little bit of money on it," said Joshua Bolin, executive director of Reagan.org, who told FOXNews.com that his organization accepted requests to send 30,000 tea bags packing in just the first two days of its promotion.

I can buy a box of 100 tea bags at my local Asian market for about $4. He sold about $120 worth of tea for $30,000 in two days! I checked his site (no link) you are paying $1 to have a tea bag sent on your behalf. All these bags could easily fit in a few suitcases ot the trunk of a car. Probably wouldn't weigh much more than 30 pounds. Shipping for the whole lot would be about $30-40.

re: #285 Charles

The blogger who is hating on Charles today describes his own religious philosophy as this:

"I believe in a vast and unknowable universe, alive with beings that to us are gods and perhaps even these gods have gods. I believe that the divine can be seen within the natural world and I have experienced it in the warm winds that whisper through trees that danced in time with the coming thunder storm. There is a music that you can hear when you are alone in the woods that I believe is the Call of the gods themselves. But more importantly I believe in good and evil, something I share with most Christians, and I don’t believe in subjective morality. I believe that you will pay for the evil you do and atheists cannot allow themselves to believe this is true."

I don't think there are a lot of religious people who agree with this guy that there are lots of gods and gods of gods. Therefore, the fact that most don't agree with this guy makes them simple non-believers of his view. That's all. So for those of us who are not religious, we simply don't believe what you might believe. That's it. We're not bad. We're not evil. No more so than you are bad if you don't share the Mormon belief and don't read their Doctrines and Covenants, no more bad than you are if you do not believe in Allah of Islam, no more bad than those of you who are Jewish and therefore not Catholic, or Catholic and therefore not Jewish. It's the same. We just aren't convinced that any of those particular scenarios are exactly right. Personally, I was always one who volunteered: coached, raised money, taught Cub Scouts, volunteered at the senior center, donated where needed. I do not need the thought of everlasting punishment to behave well. And I dare say, many of my uber-religious friends think they can 'say' they are good people and that absolves them from actually doing anything.

Sorry for the rant. I usually come to threads late but this beautiful sunny Easter day has given me some free time. It just bothers me to hear people saying to Charles, "Oh, I certainly hope you're not going to be a disbeliever" because all of you are also disbelievers of everything except the things you do believe in.

[My only creds on this board is that I received a hat tip from Charles for using the term fauxtography to describe the Reuters scam. I lurk when I have the time.]

From your link...P

hillips was freed following a tense standoff. The USS Halyburton, a guided-missile frigate equipped with helicopters, had joined the destroyer USS Bainbridge on Friday; the amphibious assault ship USS Boxer later arrived with missile launchers, attack planes and a crew of 1,000. The floating arsenal was facing down pirates thought to be armed with pistols and a few machine guns.

Still sparse details. One pirate was on the Bainbridge negotiating, the other three with Phillips in the lifeboat. Sounds like an opportunity cropped up when all three presented targets and were threatening Phillips.

A senior US official tells me that President Barack Obama approved a recommendation by Defense Secretary Bob Gates and Joint Chiefs of Staff Adm. Michael Mullen to dispatch special forces to the US scene on Friday.

These special forces were authorized to take action "in extremis" against the Somali pirates holding Maersk Captain Richard Phillips, 53, hostage on a motorized lifeboat off the coast of Somalia.

A senior official tells me that when the fourth Somali pirate was on the Bainbridge ship, Phillips moved to side of the lifeboat to relieve himself.

At that point, U.S. special forces saw their opportunity and took other three pirates out.

Captain Phillips is now safe aboard a U.S. vessel.

It's "going to make a great movie," a U.S. official adds.

Update.

ROE is what killed us in 'Nam.
Pilots going over Haiphong harbor could see anti-aircraft missiles being unloaded, but because the ships were Soviet or ChiCom couldn't hit them. The NVA would but anti-aircraft batteries on dikes. But dikes were not allowed to be hit because it would cause flooding.

ROE has it's uses, but mostly it's an REMF (Rear Echelon Mother F**er) who is trying to sanitize a war for public consumption.

re: #41 freetoken

Yes, The Good News magazine pops up. On their Evolution (front) page, they have this quote:

"What strange rationale makes some physicists accept the inconceivable electron as real while refusing to accept the reality of a Designer on the ground that they cannot conceive of Him?" (quoted by Scott Huse, The Collapse of Evolution, 1997, pp. 159-160).

I did the oil drop experiment that most physics majors do in first year lab... at the time I had no idea I was measuring the "inconceivable"... silly me.

Just because something is hard to understand doesn't make it unreal. What might make it unreal is if it cannot be duplicated under controlled conditions. The oil drop experiment, done with reasonable care, will give the same result time and again. The net charge on the drop comes in discrete dollops. Never 2.37 electrons' worth.

To fully understand, oh, say, the hydrogen atom, is an enormous challenge. (There's even a Springer(yellow cover, highly technical, hundreds of pages, abstract math etc.) book on it. And that's one measly little pair of elementary particles. Once you get up to water, well, water is not just inconceivable, it's beyond human comprehension if you insist on full comprehension, right from the ground up, starting with quantum physics and ending with technical details for just why snowflakes have that hexagonal shape and why salt dissolves in water.

But water is real. No one disputes it. Atheists, Hindus, Muslims, and Christians are agreed that water is real. Perhaps there is some version of Tao, or Plato-ism, that questions that, but still, water is real in a robust and straightforward sense.

You cannot dip Helen Keller's hand in running God and thereby prove to her the reality of God. A full understanding of God is even more completely beyond human reach than a full understanding of water, but the general idea is accessible to all. The difficulty with which something may be comprehended is no grounds at all for judging its reality. Persons who doubt the existence of God are not in the same category of stubbornly unreasonable as those, if any, who would dispute the reality of water.

And you need to reef the sails when approaching a reef, or the ship might run on the reef.

The sheets aren't those white things flapping in the wind, they're the lines holding them in position.

A stern chase is a long chase because you're both sailing before the wind, so there's no needed to tack...while if both are trying to sail upwind, the same amount of time, going at the same speed, translates into far less distance covered along the intended course.

There aren't any knots in the sheets. There are bends and hitches and turns. Knots are the mphs of the sea.

And so it goes.
