Another moving story, to complement the one on the previous thread.

Later, in another career, my company would hire movers that handled the total job. Those wonderful folks came into your house, packed everything into boxes, loaded the boxes onto the truck, and at the destination another crew came and unloaded the truck and then unloaded the boxes at your direction.

Don't even ask me what that cost. It was a very profitable business, they had money to burn.

Only thing, you needed to clean house before they got there. If it was in the house, they were going to pack it. Proof positive was when we got to the destination and found that the packing crew had carefully wrapped the cigarette butts in the ash tray and packed them.

I've been lucky enough to have professionals move me almost every time and it's still a royal pain in the ass. Worst part to me is having to sort through everything before they come...and decide what to keep and what to throw away.

I remember when we moved into our current house, which is nearly double the square footage of the previous house, plus an unfinished basement. I thought we'd never need all those kitchen cabinets, spacious closets, and basement storage space. I was wrong. My husband is taking flying lessons and I'm already worrying about what if...? He said the same thing would happen to me as would if I were riding on the back of his motorcycle and something happened...it would just take a little longer.

The best thing about the professional movers was how they moved my '67 Cutlass convertible. Not exactly a small car. They put it into the truck, then built a 2X4 framework around it so that they could stack more boxes on top of the car.

Asif Ali Zardari's signature was a boon for Islamic militants who have brutalized the Swat Valley for nearly two years in demanding a new justice system. It was sure to further anger human rights activists and feed fears among the U.S. and other Western allies that the valley will turn into a sanctuary for militants close to Afghanistan.

Whatever criticism may come, Zardari can claim some political cover — the National Assembly voted unanimously Monday to adopt a resolution urging his signature, although at least one party boycotted. Earlier, a Taliban spokesman had warned lawmakers against opposing the deal.

The Islamists are advancing in all quarters.

In the spirit of the cat stories on the previous thread I have a couple.

I worked for many years in the household goods section for the military.

I had a call from a concerned cat owner that he had not seen his cat since the moving truck left. I took his contact phone numbers and he said he had told his neighbors to watch for the cat. His household goods were going to the Wash DC area.

About three weeks later I got a call from him. Apparently when the storage company went to get his household goods from storage one of the boxes meowed! The cat had been in storage for about 18 days! The cat was thin and hungry, but otherwise, none the worse for the wear.

Another time I got a call from a moving company that they had received a shipment from Texas and found three kittens in a dresser drawer, all fine and they wanted to know if the owner of the stuff knew they were there. He didn't and the kittens were adopted by the moving company personnel.

Yes. My best friend's mother was one. It was the oddest thing I've ever seen. When the woman came down with bnreast cancer, she moved in with her own mother and my friend and I cleaned out her house. I have never in my life seen so many magazines. They were stacked floor to ceiling and there were little paths through. She had every issue of some of them going back decades. She lost her battle with cancer a couple years later, but I have never forgotten that.

His orders were for the use of lethal force in the event of imminent danger to the hostages. That order gave the commanders on the scene enough operational discretion to act when the time came. It's good that BHO chose not to micro-manage this one.

And if Obama RESTRICTED them to "imminent danger", instead of "shoot the pirates when you get a shot", then it seems to me that the successful action happened in spite of that, not because of it. Obama gave them that authorization on Friday evening, after a NSC briefing call. My guess is that the call relayed news of the failed escape attempt, in which the Navy was powerless to help. Odd that no one has mentioned it until just now. Odd, too, that the reason there are naval patrols in the area at all are because of Bush's orders placing them there for the express purpose of intimidating Somalian pirates - a strategy which worked just fine as far as American-flagged ships were concerned until just last week - isn't being mentioned at all.

It'll be interesting how this gets spun when our European allies refuse to offer any assistance in addressing the problem.

Part of what I think is going on here is that people (particularly in the press) aren't using uniform language to describe what happened here. There is a great deal of difference between saying Obama "signed off twice" on "orders for a rescue to proceed" (paraphrasing one of the descriptions I read), and saying - as the New York Times did - that he was approached twice, and finally relented on Saturday under very specific parameters.

Been sick all day, kinda caught some of this news late last night...couldn't believe my eyes! Moonbats heads must be EXPLODING! The Chosen One actually played his hand the way it should have been? Remarkable! For days I've been telling anyone who would listen that this was exacly how to deal with these thugs. The only reason moving stinks is that most folks aren't properly geared up for the ordeal. Last time I moved, I used my Studebaker station wagon with the sliding roof, and moved the both the garage beer fridge and the welding outfit standing upright, so that the fridge was ready to go to work immediately upon arrival. Priorities count, you know.

I'm sure that either Avanti or myself could fix Charles up with a nice Wagonaire. It would look good in the underground Lizard motor pool.

My captors continue to taunt me with bizarre little dangling objects. They dine lavishly on fresh meat, while I am forced to eat dry cereal. The only thing that keeps me going is the hope of escape, and the mild satisfaction I get from ruining the occasional piece of furniture. Tomorrow I may eat another houseplant.

DAY 761
Today my attempt to kill my captors by weaving around their feet while they were walking almost succeeded, must try this at the top of the stairs. In an attempt to disgust and repulse these vile oppressors, I once again induced myself to vomit on their favorite chair...must try this on their bed.

Slept all day so that I could annoy my captors with sleep depriving, incessant pleas for food at ungodly hours of the night.

Decapitated a mouse and brought them the headless body, in attempt to make them aware of what I am capable of, and to try to strike fear into their hearts. They only cooed and condescended about what a good little cat I was...Hmmm. Not working according to plan ...

I am finally aware of how sadistic they are. For no good reason I was chosen for the water torture. This time however it included a burning foamy chemical called "shampoo." What sick minds could invent such a liquid. My only consolation is the piece of thumb still stuck between my teeth.

There was some sort of gathering of their accomplices. I was placed in solitary throughout the event. However, I could hear the noise and smell the foul odor of the glass tubes they call "beer." More importantly I overheard that my confinement was due to MY power of "allergies." Must learn what this is and how to use it to my advantage.

I am convinced the other captives are flunkies and maybe snitches. The dog is routinely released and seems more than happy to return. He is obviously a half-wit. The Bird on the other hand has got to be an informant. He has mastered their frightful tongue (something akin to mole speak) and speaks with them regularly. I am certain he reports my every move. Due to his current placement in the metal room his safety is assured. But I can wait, it is only a matter of time.

Odd that no one has mentioned it until just now. Odd, too, that the reason there are naval patrols in the area at all are because of Bush's orders placing them there for the express purpose of intimidating Somalian pirates - a strategy which worked just fine as far as American-flagged ships were concerned until just last week - isn't being mentioned at all.

It'll be interesting how this gets spun when our European allies refuse to offer any assistance in addressing the problem.

Obama gave them that authorization on Friday evening, after a NSC briefing call. My guess is that the call relayed news of the failed escape attempt, in which the Navy was powerless to help. Obama must have had the brains to realize his ass would be grass if he "let" Phillips be killed by the pirates ... by continuing to hamstring the Navy.

Yes. My best friend's mother was one. It was the oddest thing I've ever seen. When the woman came down with bnreast cancer, she moved in with her own mother and my friend and I cleaned out her house. I have never in my life seen so many magazines. They were stacked floor to ceiling and there were little paths through. She had every issue of some of them going back decades. She lost her battle with cancer a couple years later, but I have never forgotten that.

We lived down the street from and elderly couple who did exactly the same thing; for decades, they saved and stacked every newspaper and magazine that entered the house, leaving a maze of tottering piles with narrow passageways between. Apparently, this is a fairly common illness.

Hmm. Nope, still couldn't do it. I don't like to clean but, nope, no no no...Too jealous of a person for that. Anyway, there is only ONE room for a closet, the other rooms are already in use, and I would NOT share my clothes (for which I need a room, yes I AM a woman!)

See, now I would be pleased if she brought a lot of clothes, as long as she's my size. I have very little clothing, if you're not counting sweatpants and t-shirts. (I work at home and seldom need to dress up, so I find it hard to justify spending money on clothes.) Not that this is ever going to happen, since I cannot think of a way to explain it to my kids.
