Open minded may have an entire different meaning in the Age of Obama.
THE top suits and some of the on-air talent at CNBC were recently ordered to a top-secret meeting with General Electric CEO Jeffrey Immelt and NBC Universal President Jeff Zucker to discuss whether they've turned into the President Obama-bashing network, Page Six has learned.
"It was an intensive, three-hour dinner at 30 Rock which Zucker himself was behind," a source familiar with the powwow told us. "There was a long discussion about whether CNBC has become too conservative and is beating up on Obama too much. There's great concern that CNBC is now the anti-Obama network. The whole meeting was really kind of creepy."
One topic under the microscope, our insider said, was on-air CNBC editor Rick Santelli's rant two months ago about staging a "Chicago Tea Party" to protest the president's bailout programs -- an idea that spawned tax protest tea parties in other big cities, infuriating the White House. Oddly, Santelli was not at the meeting, while Jim Cramer was, noted our source, who added that no edict was ultimately handed down by the network chieftains.
CNBC flack Brian Steel confirmed the get-together, but insisted: "The dinner was to thank CNBC for a job well done in our in-depth reporting throughout the financial crisis. As far as our coverage is concerned, we are built for balance and we are unabashedly pro-investor."
Our source retorted: "That is complete bull[bleep] . . . they didn't invite a lot of people to [the meeting]. There were many staffers who were working 24/7 during the crisis who weren't asked to attend, even Santelli, who was a big star for the network during those weeks. Why not?"
In addition, the insider said: "News of the meeting is starting to leak out and people are contacting a number of the on-air people to ask if they've been muzzled by GE."

One thing I think this video ought to have spoken about more in depth (unless I missed ti, the phone rang), is the idea of projection as well.
Person Y believes This, therefore they will 1) always believe this, 2) adopt classic behaviours of those who believe this, and 3) will always be against that.
Regardless if that is what in fact they believe.
It's what happens to Charles quite often. It's what the Left does. It's what the Right does. And people need to grow up, stop Projecting, and start dealing with facts.

I don't know who this English dude is, but it's clear that one too many people has accused him of being closed-minded because he doesn't believe in ghosts. Man, did he show them.
I don't agree with his assertion at 4:28. I think that "I do not believe X" usually implies "I believe in not-X."

Go to KOS. They tend to validate stupid ideas/crackpot theories using impeachable logic. It's the "dark side" (over here) they worry about.
What I'm trying to say is that validating or disproving a theory using another theory is a painful process, and usually unproductive, if not downright embarrassing.

Charles: Phil over at bad astronomy is recommending the Book Why Evolution is true by Biologist Jerry Cayne.
Among other things Plil says "Creationists love to try to pick apart evolution, looking at minor details in isolation and saying it doesn’t make sense. But they’re wrong: evolution is a beautiful tapestry, a complex fabric of countless threads woven together into a grand picture of life on Earth. And it all holds together.
I strongly recommend this book to anyone with even a passing interest in evolution, or the manufactured controversy of creationism. Coyne’s work is complete and convincing, slamming the door firmly closed on young-Earth creationism. If you have to deal with creationists in your life, this book is something you should keep very handy.

The Jets' home opener against the Patriots is scheduled during Rosh Hashanah. The next week, the Jets host the Titans hours before Yom Kippur starts. The conflict with the two holiest holidays on the Jewish calendar may keep the team's Jewish fans who observe the holidays from attending.

So do other archaeologists! I've been reading up on proto-Indo-European and apparently Gimutas did some excellent work before she got hold of this whole "Europe was a matriarchy and just wunnerful until the bad old patriarchal Indo-Europeans arrived" thing. People seem to accept what she wrote before then and ignore everything that came after.
She jumped on the Margaret Murray - Jaquetta Hawkes - Riane Eisler bandwagon and left her academic credibility languishing on the cold prairie.

Here another issue that evidences a closed mind.
The US believes/insists people will come with a 'Palestinian' state.
Israel disagrees.
U.S. Envoy's Two-State Push Meets Israeli Skepticism
Officials in Mr. Netanyahu's office said his message to Mr. Mitchell was that Israel would not risk the creation of another Hamas-controlled entity on its border. The Islamic militants overran Gaza in 2007, and Mr. Netanyahu has warned that creation of a Palestinian state could place the violent extremists next to Israel in the West Bank.
Also, the Palestinians would have to recognize Israel as a Jewish state, a step they have refused to take so far. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because no statement had been made.
Mr. Mitchell made the administration's goals clear to reporters while standing next to Avigdor Lieberman, the Israeli foreign minister, after their meeting.
"U.S. policy favors … a two-state solution, which would have a Palestinian state living in peace alongside the Jewish state of Israel," Mr. Mitchell said.
In a statement, Mr. Lieberman questioned the basic premise that compromises by both sides would eventually lead to a peace accord.
"The historic approach has so far not brought any result or solution," a statement from Mr. Lieberman's office said. "The minister also said that the new government will have to come up with new ideas and a new approach."
[Link: online.wsj.com...]
Both sides are going to insist the other has a closed mind. There is going to be trouble.

Glen Beck is talking about Charles Johnson
Really? I'm looking forward to reading about that here tomorrow. I came back to post this example of the hypocrisy in the left I found at Instapundit
"Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-Ill.) blasted "tea party" protests yesterday, labeling the activities "despicable" and shameful."
"The ‘tea parties’ being held today by groups of right-wing activists, and fueled by FOX News Channel, are an effort to mislead the public about the Obama economic plan that cuts taxes for 95 percent of Americans and creates 3.5 million jobs," Schakowsky said in a statement."
ha, get this
"“The husband of an Illinois congresswoman pleaded guilty Wednesday to tax violations and bank fraud for writing rubber checks and failing to collect withholding tax from an employee. Robert Creamer, a political consultant married to four-term U.S. Rep. Jan Schakowsky, could face four years in prison on the two felony counts when he is sentenced Dec. 21.”
Later folks, time to go walk the lab along the American (and it is a beautiful day)

These are the things that need to be taught in schools. Videos like this would be a good start, rather than Algore's film.
But let's pretend for a moment that Algore's "An Inconvenient Truth" is nothing but fact. What good does it do to show that film to school children when they haven't the means to rationally evaluate it, nor the means to do anything about it?

What if one approaches scientific hypothesis, experiment, and analysis as an attempt to learn how God works? For example, what if it were believed that evolution is how God works?
Belief in God is not automatically incompatible with open mindedness, and scientific study doesn't prove or disprove God either way. God, at this point, is undeniable/unprovable. If you believe in God, you accept that He exists on faith because you can't prove it. If you believe science replaces God, or God doesn't exist, you're also taking it on faith, because it's also unprovable. An awful lot of science has been done in the pursuit of unlocking God's secrets; Marxist thought required that science disprove God, to rest ultimate authority in the state, rather than something greater than that state.
Ultimately, science is search for truth, and at that level, belief in God is irrelevant because the rules, secrets, discoveries, etc will exist regardless. Go far enough down that path, we might find a definitive answer, but that's no where near where we are now.
Until then, prove God...either way...you know what, this is actually a pretty stupid argument to even have.
nevermind.

It's broken down by state, etc. I get the impression that numbers aren't entirely up to date, however, because the St. Louis number says zero and apparently there were between 6 and 7 thousand there. But, anyway, it says 281,488 overall.
I saw a lot of great things in these tea parties, so I'm happy this all happened. I saw lots of mentions of individual rights, which is the positive promotion of freedom, not just protesting taxes.

I forced myself to sit through one episode. My male supplied me with nerf balls to throw, and left the house.
It was safer that way.
I miss the original Scooby Doo.
I watched one episode with a ghost at a prison caught on video. A fashion-challenged ghost, because the jeans and tennis shoes it was wearing under its robe were pretty dingy looking.
I used to visit the show's web site for entertainment purposes. There was a guy who would post fake ghost pictures to show how easy it was. There was also always someone who'd miss the note clearly labeling it as a fake photo and get deranged trying to defend it as real. That told me all I needed to know about the audience - they want to believe. (And they probably thought the X-Files was a documentary.)

Great vid. So, in synopsis, if you're countering a message, show the proof. Validate it.
If you believe it, without any explanation or validation, you're "close minded" and you're stuck. No growth of ideas on this belief is possible.
If you believe "it", with countered validationprovided, and you continue to deny the validation, you're what my Grandfather used to refer to as "A Tack-o Head".
Like Hard Tack, an unleavened unchewable, seaman's bread, without the aid of a glass of good Port to dip it in.

Sounds like she got her research from the "Clan of the Cave Bear" series.

I like what Ayn Rand had to say about an open mind:
... drop the dangerous little catch phrase which advises you to keep an 'open mind.'
... What objectivity and the study of philosophy require is not an 'open mind' but an active mind - a mind able and eagerly willing to examine ideas, but to examine them critically. An active mind does not grant equal status to truth and falsehood; it does not remain floating in a stagnant vacuum of neutrality and uncertainty; by assuming the responsibility of judgment, it reaches firm convictions and holds to them. Since it is able to prove its convictions, an active mind achieves an unassailable certainty in confrontations with assailants - a certainty untainted by spots of blind faith, approximation, evasion, and fear...
Liked the video, well presented.

That's right. You follow the evidence using a ruthless process of reason. In fact, Aristotle used that approach. That would be his "dialectic", so to speak.

My mother loaned me her book - can't remember the title - Something and the Sword? Bad, bad sword, in any case.
I made it through about 20 pp. before it just pissed me off too much. Civilization - the root of all evil. We'd be better off back in the Stone Age. Tendentious drivel.
Some of the archeological finds are very intriguing, but her sweeping conclusions are unwarranted.

I had never heard of this before. It seems such an odd thing to follow "Watership Down" with. The article at Wiki doesn't make it sound too interesting, but the reviews at Amazon show more promise. I'll have to see if the library has it next time I'm there.

While I'm at the library, I'll have to see if they have any of her stuff too. The Jean Auel stories are clearly influenced by 80s feminism taken to an extreme, but it's different when it's supposed to be scholarly.
I was on another forum reading a discussion about one of the Travel Channel documentaries on Pacific tribes, and the people were shocked at how hard the tribe had to work to get enough to eat and the little variety they had. I pointed out that maybe there was a reason cultural, scientific and technical advances came out of agricultural societies with division of labor, specialization and all that jazz. The responses were inevitably, "But they live closer to nature!" Well, there's a reason they call Nature a mother...

Personally, as part of my ongoing critical thinking education, I have been reading Michael Crichton's old speeches. Far better. The flaw in this video is it is starting with the assumption all science is by pure, and all intentions and desires behind science are pure. Crichton's speeches annihilate this often belief with reason. I will choose reason over science, because science can be corrupted.
To quote Crichton:
"I also expected science to banish the evils of human thought---prejudice and superstition, irrational beliefs and false fears. I expected science to be, in Carl Sagan's memorable phrase, "a candle in a demon haunted world." And here, I am not so pleased with the impact of science. Rather than serving as a cleansing force, science has in some instances been seduced by the more ancient lures of politics and publicity. Some of the demons that haunt our world in recent years are invented by scientists. The world has not benefited from permitting these demons to escape free."
And another:
"I studied anthropology in college, and one of the things I learned was that certain human social structures always reappear. They can't be eliminated from society. One of those structures is religion. Today it is said we live in a secular society in which many people---the best people, the most enlightened people---do not believe in any religion. But I think that you cannot eliminate religion from the psyche of mankind. If you suppress it in one form, it merely re-emerges in another form. You can not believe in God, but you still have to believe in something that gives meaning to your life, and shapes your sense of the world. Such a belief is religious."

re: #326 meh130
No, the failing here is Crichton neglecting to distinguish corruptible personalities from the conceptual framework underlying science, and unless he knows of something nonsensical about the scientific method itself then I shall continue to ignore him. Also, the video is an aide towards helping recognise some common logical fallicies and has a far wider application than the specialized areas of knowledge gathering that make up science. Logic helps us to gain a non-contradictory understanding of life, the Universe, and everything. One may "believe" in reason, but, without logic as a guide, one's reasoning will quite likely lead to bat-shit crazy conclusions. Learn from the video, for it is good.
Tony.

From the inimitable C. S. Lewis:
If the solar system was brought about by an accidental collision, then the appearance of organic life on this planet was also an accident, and the whole evolution of Man was an accident too. If so, then all our present thoughts are mere accidents- the accidental by-product of the movement of atoms. And this holds for the thoughts of the materialists and astronomers as well as for anyone else's. But if their thoughts- i.e. of materialism and astronomy- are merely accidental by-products, why should we believe them to be true ? I see no reason for believing that one accident should be able to give me a correct account of all the other accidents. It's like expecting that the accidental shape taken by the splash when you upset a milkjug should give you a correct account of how the jug was made and why it was upset.
Reasonable ?

I often wonder about Einstein's open-mindedness. He once asked a para-normalist sympathizer about the ability to read minds. After he was told about the purported ability he asked, "Is it easieer to read minds when they are closer to you?" No, was the answer, distance didn't matter.
"Well then," the genius continued, "I cannot believe in it. I know of no force of nature that does not diminish in accordance with the inverse square law."
I now wonder what Einstein would have thought about "dark energy", a force that increases with distance.

No, it is not reasonable. The precisely same arguments can be made for strict causality. Why would I beleve the truth of a proposition placed in my head over one that accidentally formed there? If anything, the one formed might at least have some survival value.

I assume this video is a shot at creationism, but let's be honest. There are plenty of "scientific" ideas and debate that is utterly close-minded. Yes, a firm evidence-ignoring belief in the supernatural may be close-minded, but global warming alarmist scientists are a great example of "scientific" close-mindedness. Once you start to believe something is true, you can just as easily use scientific methods to shut out competing ideas.

Evolution is the very theoretical framework within which biology exists. It is as essential to it as are relativity theory and quantum mechanics to modern physics.

No I don't. I believe that He has revealed that he is responsible for the world and all that is in it. He revealed that to me through His word, and gave me the wisdom to accept it.
As for the second part, that would never happen. It violates His nature, and God will never do anything that violates His nature. He loves you even if you deny Him. Secondly, if he wanted that done, He would do it Himself. History is replete with examples. He doesn't need me. Ultimately, you choose how He will respond to you.

Did he tell you that the Book of Genesis was literally true, and that he had created all the millons of terrestrial species independently and as is, and/or that he had created life, the earth, and the universe in the span of a few days a few thousand yeats ago?
And if so, did he tell you why he had fabricated all the false empirical evidence he must have planted in our soil, our genes, and everywhere else? For if the Book of Genesis is literally true, alla that stuff has to have been purposefully faked. And for what nonmalicious reason would a benevolent deity intentionally deceive its children by manufacturing untruths and packing the book of nature with them?
I think that it is much more likely that ancient scriptural scribes were merely reflecting the relative scientific ignroance of their times.
As for the second part, that would never happen. It violates His nature, and God will never do anything that violates His nature. He loves you even if you deny Him. Secondly, if he wanted that done, He would do it Himself. History is replete with examples. He doesn't need me. Ultimately, you choose how He will respond to you.
That's comforting to hear; the restraining order is provisionally on hold. But I wish that alla those people who suffered and died under the various and sundry Inquisitions had had the benefit of coexisting with people who embraced the same convictions.
