Microsoft tired of waiting

Microsoft, disappointed by the low adoption rate for the company's latest iteration of its Internet Explorer web browser, will from next week begin pushing the software to computer users through the Windows automatic update feature.

The target in the drive to expand use of Internet Explorer 8 (IE8) is the more than 90% of the IE user base still on versions six and seven. According to research firm Net Applications, IE8's share of the IE market has reached 4.36% but overall IE share dropped to 60.90% this month.

House on the water that needs new carpet upstairs (but has new wood floors down) and will eventually need new counters in the kitchen?

Less expensive, a bit smaller house to be built?

Rent a townhouse for a year to build in a really cool new neighborhood with floor plans based on historic homes?

Thanks. I generally use FireFox, but I use IE 7 for specific applications that don't work well on FF. Since my credit union is unlikely to have upgraded their check scanning software by next month, I'll make sure to de-select IE8, and I have my machines download but not install without my permission.
(My credit union allows me to deposit checks up to $200 by scanning them on my scanner. It is supposed to work on FF and Macs, but I haven't gotten it to work yet.)

Jordy: "I detect no leak here"

And of course, "Assimilate this!"

Welcome, newcomers. Our community is enriched by numerous differing points of view and perspectives. Those who are unable to obey the rules will find the deletion and banning sticks wielded rather quickly. Those who can follow the rules will find that we can have lively discussions, so long as the rules posted above are followed. No personal attacks, and no advocacy of violence.

Programmer Builds Twitter-Enabled Cat Flap

Ghip happens to know such precise details about his cats' behavior because he has figured out how to make the world's first photo-tweeting cat door. Penny and Gus both wear collars outfitted with thumb-nail-sized radio-frequency identification (RFID) chips. The chips are passively sensed, which means they don't require a battery and don't weigh down the collar. Whenever a cat goes near the door, a small RFID reader scans the tag and determines whether the cat is authorized to go in or out.

If the chip tells the reader that the cat is authorized, it not only activates the door opener; it simultaneously also activates a camera and a program on an attached laptop that sends the captured image to a separate Twitter account, where it is automatically posted on the cats' microblog with a simple, cute caption that is automatically generated, such as "Gus is out to get rid of a hairball" or "Penny is in to shred the chair."

Goodman was great. As was Lionel Hampton. Goodman looked like he had a good sense of humor.

There's another from that concert -- Moonglow.

I can't tell that the concert made it to DVD or CD.

Am I wrong thinking that Charles helped her set up her blog?

She called Charles her 'blog daddy'...and then spits in his face. Does the word 'bitch' sound right, or am I being too kind?

What I worry about are her 4 (I think) daughters, who must get a lot of nasty remarks thrown at them in school, as their Mummie Dearest is infamous.

She uses them in her videos as props, and never stops to think that they are in their teens, and did not ask for this, and what the repercussions will be for them long after they are out of school and university.

BTW, please check your email! ;)

What about mac spoofing?

Good question..MAC addresses are firmware burnt into device upon mfg and registered..But lets just say you copped on a device and spoofed a laptop's MAC address..Was smart enough to burn a chip with a spoofed MAC number...No prob..Security on net will only work in layers..We employ 802.1x Cisco security on the switches and routers..We force any device on the network to carry a MS certificate issued by a high security CA sever and a 128 bit PVK key to issue authority..and a secret authority cert issued from somewhere secret...This doesn't even cover Active Directory security..
We bang your machine every 10 seconds and check your cert..in 5 years Charles will be doing the same thing..And he will have a table of available MAC addresses here...

I'm interested why the downward tread?

Growth of government sector?

This is just my biased view.

I think that growth of the government payroll is part of it.

And that maybe a country where the citizens pay more attention to their American Idol vote than their Congressional vote is part of it.

And that the education system in this country is in decline is part of it.

And (and this is the one that will excite the most comments of 'No, that ain't it') that the decline of the manufacturing sector is part of it.

But the short answer is, I don't know.

Hear, nature, hear; dear goddess, hear!
Suspend thy purpose, if thou didst intend
To make this creature fruitful!
Into her womb convey sterility!
Dry up in her the organs of increase;
And from her derogate body never spring
A babe to honour her! If she must teem,
Create her child of spleen; that it may live,
And be a thwart disnatured torment to her!
Let it stamp wrinkles in her brow of youth;
With cadent tears fret channels in her cheeks;
Turn all her mother's pains and benefits
To laughter and contempt; that she may feel
How sharper than a serpent's tooth it is
To have a thankless child! Away, away!

OK, the job itself looks fine, but one of the things they want is:

At least three years experience working with foster youth, youth of color, working class and low income youth and/or vulnerable populations in a strengths-based and social justice methodology.

Should I just run for the hills? I have an unfortunate history of ending up working for crazy people.

That's rhetorical, right?

Evening Lizards...just posted this on a dead thread so will repost here. I just finished the just released "One Second After" by Robert Forstechen with forward by Newt Gingrich. From page one, I could not put the book down! It is a fictional tale of an EMP attack on America. It has left me reeling. Folks, you must read this book. It could sober up a drunken sot.

You mean William R Forstchen...?

I hear it makes reference to Type I Diabetes. Some diabetics reviewing the book have said that it doesn't handle that accurately.

You know, I really have not had more than 3 employers in my adult working life since departing the military in 1993.

I did have numerous friends who would talk about how crazy their boss was, etc.

Long story short, I was recruited out of a position that was nothing but positive on paper. 1/3 more pay, way shorter drive from home, double vacation right off the bat, etc.

After taking my time, and having numerous discussions with the VP for about 3 months leading up, I took the position.

After about 2 weeks on the job, I had more interaction with the person who owned the business. It became crystal clear why they had a retention problem.

That woman was a loose cannon. Ativan, Klonopin, you name it. Since I had the medical background, she let me know every med she was on.

I have some more crazy stuff I could tell, but I'll leave it at that.

Ah, C-Rex,

In a word, no.  The superior person doesn't notice the barking of such dingos.  Even if they behave in a common and low nature, as she has done with Bob Spenser lately.  It just isn't done.  One allows them their prattle and jibes and then one pays no attention to them at all, as is their due.  Let them push and shove each other and har har har far into the night in such mindless jests as they can get each other to laugh at.

Dwell instead here with us, your minions, who know you for the better person you are, and just be comforted in the fact that at the end of their day they will have only caught each other's lice, while you will surely have caught the ire of foes more worthy of your notice.

Well, you can't get across Colorado, East to West, West to East. Interstate 70, from Golden (where I live) to Vail (west of me) is CLOSED in both directions.

That's it folks. If I70 is closed, they is no way you are going to take the smaller feeder roads to get across the state.

Shelters are being set up in schools and public places to take care of the stranded travelers.

A lot of power outages around the Denver Metro Area and the foothills.

I am a Type II diabetic, as is my husband.

Did you see an Endocrinologist? If not, and your health coverage allows it, please see one, as he would be best able to advise you.

How many times a day do you test? Do you test in the AM, before breakfast, on an empty stomach? We test then, before lunch and dinner, and then before bed time. I just tested, and am a bit low...64. I am on 2 different insulins, and have been on it from Day One, as I am more a Type 1 1/2, while NY Grampa is on tight control, as am I, and no meds. I actually diagnosed him, when I misunderstood something he said. His fasting blood glucose was 144. And in the AM? Still elevated. I called our internist, who said to watch him for 2 weeks, and if it was still high, to bring him in. I then called my Endocrinologist, and he said to have him come there ASAP. He tested him, and he was and is a Type II.

Here is info from the ADA on pre-diabetes.

I called the man who is now our ex-Internist, and asked him to take us off his rota. I was furious. And happily our Endocrinologist is also an Internist.

Good luck!

re: #459 Zimriel Yup, William R Forstchen, sorry for the blip. I'm not that informed on the specifics of Diabetic treatment. One of the points made was that those on medicines necessary for maintaining health and life will not make it. No power, no delivery systems. But this was just one aspect of the domino effect that will make survival for the masses damned near impossible. The point was made that it would be more humane to drop a bomb on one or two cities and wipe everyone out than to EMP the entire nation with one bomb and let citizens die off in excruciating ways. Plus, EMP attacks are much easier to acheive.

The EMP attack scenario is endlessly fascinating because it would take us back to essentially, tribal or feudal living. Peggy Noonan has been rhapsodizing about how quaint we will all become if the economy melts down: more religion and more smoking according to Peggy.

I read that column.

Great.

I wish that journalists who make a lot more money than I do would stop telling me how the end of excess affluence is going to take us back to a simpler, more wholesome time.

And if Peggy Noonan thinks I'm going to take up smoking, she is mistaken. I can't afford it, for one thing.

One of the points made was that those on medicines necessary for maintaining health and life will not make it.

My doctor and I have actually discussed crisis scenarios, such as a Bird Flu Epidemic. (I brought it up, and it was completely off the record, not even on hospital property) His best advice is hunker down and wait it out. Hopefully the end of the world occurs right after I get refills, then I can wait 90 days. After the medicine is done, I'm done.

Oh my!

I almost understood some of that. Back to the books for me.

Totally OT, but anybody here have a Canon printer? Ever noticed what total liars they are?

Once a week or so I get an error message telling me one of the ink cartridges is empty. It's usually cyan or one of the colors that barely get used. Cuz I mostly print black-n-white, like a good little wordaholic.

Well, nine times out of ten you just take the cartridge out as instructed, put it right back in (you don't even have to shake it or anything), and you're good to go for another 100 pages.

Tonight I thought it might be telling me the truth, though. Said the black ink was finished. Sounded plausible.

Just to be ornery, I took it out, plugged it back in, and proceeded to get another dozen full b&w pages out of it. (Printing some good stuff from Commentary, by the way.)

Fappin' lyin' corporate thieves. If you obeyed their instructions you'd be out at least a hundred extra bucks a year. Maybe two hundred. Maybe more, depending on how much you print. First they charge you out the pooper for their inks, then try to get you to throw away perfectly good cartridges on their say-so.

On a related note: Have you ever noticed that those greeniac "please consider the environment before printing this email" notices, nine times out of ten, run you over to an extra page if you do decide to print?

Jackasses and thieves.

Rant off.

Didn't Merv Griffin have her on a lot?

The videos I saw, in the 70's, were bootlegs of her nightclub stuff, so it was full out obscene.

I know I saw her doing her "clean" material on a number of variety shows, so Griffin is possible.

She made at least one guest appearance on "Sandford and Sons" I remember that.

You remember the early IBM printers. They would sell you an "Upgrade" that would make it run faster, and all the technician had to do was have ten minutes alone with the machine. He's pop the cover off, change the belt to a different set of pulleys, and put the cover right back on. UPGRADE!

I've got an HP printer. The damn thing prints about 40 pages and then wants a new cartridge. I've tried shaking it and putting back - no luck. Ink just gets lighter an lighter.

This is the new business model. Cheap printers - expensive tiny cartridges.

Anyone have luck with the new Kodak printers?

My HP 6310 gets very very good ink "mileage", although the cartridge status thing is a lie.

I had a i850s Cannon printer until recently. It was printing fine until I started getting off color prints. Then it started eating paper followed by error messages until it finally died and there was no communication between my PC and the printer though power was on and the cable was connected.

639 Kosh's Shadow  Fri, Apr 17, 2009 9:19:36pm

re: #612 Cato the Elder

Rant off.

I've found Canon to be better than Epson or HP. They give you a warning, and then you keep printing for a few weeks before it stops.

They're all cheap plastic junk for the most part. They get you with the cartridges which you need to replace a lot. I gave up on color printing since I really didn't need that and bought a Brother laser printer which works like a charm. Black and white mind you. You might want to look into a color laser printer.

JANEANE GAROFALO: Thank you. You know, there's nothing more interesting than seeing a bunch of racists become confused and angry at a speech they're not quite certain what he's saying. It sounds right and then it doesn't make sense. Which, let's be very honest about what this is about. It's not about bashing Democrats, it's not about taxes, they have no idea what the Boston tea party was about, they don't know their history at all. This is about hating a black man in the White House. This is racism straight up. That is nothing but a bunch of teabagging rednecks. And there is no way around that. And you know, you can tell these type of right wingers anything and they'll believe it, except the truth. You tell them the truth and they become -- it's like showing Frankenstein's monster fire. They become confused, and angry and highly volatile. That guy, causing them feelings they don't know, because their limbic brain, we've discussed this before, the limbic brain inside a right-winger or Republican or conservative or your average white power activist, the limbic brain is much larger in their head space than in a reasonable person, and it's pushing against the frontal lobe. So their synapses are misfiring. Is Bernie Goldberg listening?

101 is not bad at all, but it is far better to be pre-diabetic, and at the point where you can very possibly stave off the onset, or even prevent it. I found out, after I was diagnosed with a blood glucose of 440), and called all my cousins on both sides (I am an 'only') to tell them that I was a diabetic, only to find out that there were a number of them on both sides..I only knew about my Grandmother zt"l, who was a Type II. I was literally speechless at the number of first cousins who did not want it to be known that they were, and even an uncle, who died years before, was...3 degrees from MIT, and he did not want anyone to know. They now feel that there is a genetic aspect for Type II, as well as the auto-immune disease, Type I, that is far rarer.

Getting a family medical history is a very good idea, as I (a retired RN) found out, as did NY Grampa, when he called his brother.

Damn it, Type II is now endemic world-wide, yet there is still a stigma. I have been open re being a diabetic from Day One.

BTW, when I joined the American Diabetes Association in order to get the best info? I found out that 75% of the yearly charge went to their executives, etc. To me this is just criminal. I no longer subscribe, but read it online.

Whatever way this goes for you, you have the unique ability to help manage diabetes, if you actually have it. The Endocrinologists usually have a diabetes educator and a dietician as a part of their staff, and they are great at setting up the diet, etc. We go for a 'tune up' yearly, and see our Endocrinologist every 12 weeks for blood tests and a check up.

back in my back packing day
1972/1980 or so,
Silverton Colorado, down town, spring/summer (silverton was and or is mostly closed in winter).
Bent Elbow Saloon.

This old lady, in her 90's walked from her home every night, played
and sang piano for tips and free beer, best guess from the 5 or 6 times
that I spent two weeks at a time there at night she must have known
by heart at least ,,,,? 2,000 songs, words and piano, and some of the stuff she sang late and drunk would burn my Navy ears.

We ones who used to go there miss her lots, one fine lady.

Nice story. It seems Colorado is or was home to a good many "piano bar" styled piano players, who seemed to be as old as the state itself.

We had a blind piano player in downtown Denver named Paul, I think he died (or retired) a few years ago, but hell, my ex-wife knew him in Raton new Mexico, 35 years ago, playing piano there.

It would be an interesting book to showcase the unknown local piano players that have frequented the bars across the country for ages.

My staff is pretty pumped as this is being talked about all over the area. I am humbled that they requested me. The hostess even hired a designer to decorate the home specifically to theme. I was informed that between cocktail/appetizers, before sit-down, several symphony members will be showing up as a surprise, to perform numbers from Moulon Rouge. I hope this goes well. My career and business depends on it. The opening of my second location is slated for July 15 and a success would sure help the opening. Night all, sweet dreams of chocolate fondue:)

re: #682 Wishing

Sad to say, but if one is a diabetic, they really must be seen every 12 weeks. There is a test, an HgA1c that lets the MD know just how well you are managing your diabetes. And it helps him to decide if you need to be on a med. The complications of diabetes are not pretty, and only adhering to what the MD says, when he checks it, keeps you from trouble. I thank G-d that they now have a glucometer to test your blood glucose, and insulin that is made
from recombinant DNA, so that the insulin I get here is the USA is the same I would get in any country. And now? They have ultra-thin needles and disposable syringes. Years ago, the insulin was made from beef or pork, and was not as dependable. In addition? Glass syringes and needles that both be boiled, and the needles were sharpened by hand. not much fun, as there were burrs on the needle.

If you take care of yourself, and see the MD, etc., there is an excellent chance of not developing the complications, and now they are making strides in the labs, and may very well have a cure for Type I in a decade or less, and after? For Type II.

Not going to the MD on what he decides is the right timing, being tested, seeing an dentist 3x/year, and an Ophthalmologist once a year will only invite complications. As a diabetic, we have to give up some of our 'freedoms' in order to be able to keep diabetes under control. And by not doing it? Trust me, a diabetic would learn a lesson the very hard way.

I was in the state called 'Denial' for months, until I called my now ex-Endocrinologist, who was treating me for an auto-immune disease, Hashimoto's Thyroiditis....BTW, anyone with thyroid disease is at higher risk for diabetes...had his secretary call me to give me the result of my blood tests, and says, before hanging up, 'Oh, BTW, Dr. A*hole said to tell you that you have Type II diabetes. I asked to speak to him, and was told he was on a skiing holiday, and would be back in 2 weeks. Still in a state of shock, I asked what I should do..and was told to ask my pharmacist which glucometer he recommended.

I then called The Joslin, in Boston, where I am from, and where my Bubbe was treated, to ask for an Endocrinologist who was trained in the Joslin method. They gave me the name of one in my area of NY, and I called, and was told to come right over. When he tested my blood glucose (I had not had breakfast) and found it was 440? He immediately put me on insulin, and had the diabetes educator and then the dietitian help me understand what had to be done. Diabetes is quirky, and blood glucose can act up for no known reason. I dare not cheat on the diet I am on, and I really am responsible for my own treatment, and do not want vision, nerve damage, etc. problems.

Believe me, there are far worse things than diabetes. I hope that you will get the care that will help you stave it off, and it seems that you are in a good range with your fasting blood glucose, and that this 2-finger typer will be able to celebrate your finding out that you won! Are there any known Type II's in your family?

In the words of Lt. Aurthur Fancy (NYPD Blue): "Just because you hear a jackass braying doesn't mean you have to bray back!"

Show was a class act.  That and St. Elsewhere, Hill Street Blues, Riptide, Night Court, etc., back when I used to watch television for entertainment.

Isn't that special.

Worthless no-talent skank, anyway.

There are good reasons why Garofalo is not reproducing.

You mean other than the washboard chest, axe of a face, permanent PMS stuck on overload, hair that escaped from a lab somewhere, etc.? *

To be fair she DOES make me laugh, but not the way she wants ...

Since Pamela Geller has started calling me "no johnson," should I start referring to her as "Silicone Pammy?"

Discuss.

I think "Atlas' Jugs" has already been suggested. But it fits.

Pussy Geller,
like the Bond girl?

Heh.

Galore: "My name is Pussy. Pussy Galore."

Bond: "Yes, of course it is."

Ladies and Gents... I apologize for making a butt of myself last night and making jokes that were only funny to me, and pissing off Charles. I shall not, in the future, Bacchus-post. I enjoy being here too much to get myself banned for something silly. Thank goodness I still have my account.

I'm seeing signs that 'globalism' is fast becoming a bête noir among tea-party going 'true conservatives'. But I shouldn't be concerned; people like Glenn Beck, Ron Paul and Alex Jones could never have a real influence on conservative thinking. They're just entertainment!/

I do hate to criticize fake boobs as I love them so much.

Yuk. They look stupidly 'stuck-on', they have unsightly scars/stretchmarks, they are immobile and every woman in the porn industry has them. I also have difficulty respecting a woman who tailors her body to meet the requirements of aesthetically challenged masturbators.

Finally! A blog dedicated to a whole lot of GOP/Conservative self-flagellation! Or does it just seem that way lately?

Meanwhile, Barry Bailout continues his reshaping of the U.S. into a European-style, slow-growth, social-justice paradise, unremarked upon.

Somebody should redo the photoshop with everybody thrown under the little greed bus to include CAIR, Dan Rather, Hamas, Kos, VB, Nazis, Ron Paul, etc. It's a big club under that bus and it's not much to be proud of.

Seconded.

Contact al-AP. Their fauxtographers can at least show you how to open the program. Beyond that, see zombie's analysis. Lots of good pointers there.
