Obama: More Popular Than Chavez in Venezuela

World • Views: 2,797

An adviser told ABC News today that President Obama is more popular than Hugo Chavez in Venezuela.

PORT OF SPAIN, TRINIDAD — In an interview with ABC News, Jeffrey Davidow — a senior adviser to President Obama on Latin American affairs and director of the Summit of the Americas — said that Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez rushed a photograph of he and President Obama shaking hands onto his government’s website because Mr. Obama is more popular than Mr. Chavez in Venezuela.

“Every president and political leader in Latin America, and many in the rest of the world as well — maybe not every one of them — really sees political benefit in being seen to be associating with President Obama,” Davidow said. “And whether Chavez has problems with us or doesn’t, and he does, and there is this strained relationship, it is in his political interest, he thinks, to be seen with our president.”

And our president is happy to help.

Mr. Obama is more popular than Mr. Chavez in Venezuela than in the USA.

FTF him.

13 laZardo  Sat, Apr 18, 2009 9:51:01am

It's perhaps ironic in the sense that Obama is seen as a democratic hero in the US by enough people to make an impression on those Venezuelans who might think that Obama's election was more true to the spirit of democracy than Chavez is being now.

Obama is a tool. The only country so far that he has actually been tough with is Israel. He shakes hands with Chavez, and refuses to meet with Netanyahu? The 80 or whatever percent of American Jews who voted for this clown deserve what they're getting, but what about the few of us who voted McCain/Palin, because we took this clown Obama's past and current statements seriously, and saw this train-wreck coming?

27 wrenchwench  Sat, Apr 18, 2009 9:59:05am
"That argument is something that has greater validity now coming from President Obama," Davidow said. "I think that they see he’s interested and moving down a new path. He says he’s going to go slowly. Things aren’t going to change overnight. I think there is a sense that there can be change. But it’s something that is going to take time and they want to be a part of it."

I don't care what argument, the notion that something has "greater validity" coming from Obama makes my skin crawl.

It's all Obama, all the time on every station

If it's Thursday, it must be Obama. Or Friday. Or Saturday. Or just about any day.
Barack Obama has gone from being historic to being ubiquitous. He doesn't just control the news cycle, he is the news cycle.

Need an auto exec fired? A pirate killed? A dog patted? A Cuba policy addressed? An Easter egg rolled? An economy stimulated? Hey, he also does seders!

This is not automatic for a president in his first 100 days. George W. Bush was so quiet he was virtually speechless in his first 100 days in office, even though he had to deal with an international crisis (the Chinese government took 24 Americans hostage) and a domestic crisis (race riots in Cincinnati).

Today, we have a president who so fills the airwaves that he really should have his own network with the motto: "All Obama, All the Time."

... Chavez gave Obama a copy of "The Open Veins of Latin America: Five Centuries of the Pillage of a Continent," a book by Eduardo Galeano, which chronicles U.S. and European economic and political interference in the region....

[Link: news.yahoo.com...]

This book should be right up President Obama's alley:

I Hope
by Eduardo Galeano
Will Obama prove, at the helm of government, that his threats of war against Iran and Pakistan were only words, broadcast to seduce difficult ears during the election campaign?

I hope. And I hope he will not fall, even for a moment, for the temptation to repeat the exploits of George W. Bush. After all, Obama had the dignity to vote against the Iraq war, while the Democratic and Republican parties were applauding the announcement of this carnage.

In his campaign, the word most often repeated in his speeches was leadership. In his administration, will he continue to believe that his country has been chosen to save the world, a toxic idea that he shares with almost all his colleagues? Will he insist on the United States' global leadership and its messianic mission to take command?

I hope the current crisis, which is shaking the imperial foundations, will serve at least to give the new administration a bath of realism and humility.

Will Obama accept that racism is normal when it is used against the countries that his country invades? Isn't it racism to count the deaths of invaders in Iraq, one by one, and arrogantly ignore the many dead among the invaded population? Isn't this world racist, where there are first-, second-, and third-class citizens, and the first-. second-, and third-class dead?

Obama's victory was universally hailed as a battle won against racism. I hope he will assume, in his acts of government, this great responsibility.

Will the Obama government confirm, once again, that the Democratic Party and the Republican Party are two names of the same party?

I hope the desire for change, which these elections have established, will be more than a promise and more than a hope. I hope the new government has the courage to break with the tradition of the one and only party, disguised as two parties which at the moment of truth do more or less the same thing while simulating a fight.

Will Obama fulfill his promise to shut down the evil Guantánamo prison?

I hope, and I hope he will end the evil blockade of Cuba.

Will Obama continue to believe that it is great to have a wall that prevents Mexicans from crossing the border, while money moves without anyone asking for its passport?

During the election campaign, Obama never honestly confronted the subject of immigration. I hope, now that he is no longer in danger of scaring voters away, he can and wants to break down this wall, much longer and more embarrassing than the Berlin Wall, and all the walls that violate people's right to free movement.

Will Obama, who so enthusiastically supported the recent little gift of 750 billion dollars to bankers, govern, as usual, to socialize losses and privatize profits?

I'm afraid so, but I hope not.

Will Obama sign and comply with the Kyoto Protocol, or will he continue to give the privilege of impunity to the nation that is poisoning the planet the most? Will he govern for cars or for people? Can he change the murderous course of the lifestyle of the few who are risking the fate of all?

I'm afraid not, but I hope so.

Will Obama, the first black president in the history of the United States, realize the dream of Martin Luther King or the nightmare of Condoleezza Rice?

The White House, which is now his house, was built by black slaves. I hope he won't forget it, ever.

OTOH - (h/t 3 wood):

Obama Gets History Lesson From Latin American Leaders

April 18 (Bloomberg) -- Latin American leaders railed against the U.S. during President Barack Obama’s first trip to the region, turning what was intended to mark a new direction in relations into a history lesson that chastised “Yankee troop” interventions and U.S.-dictated economic policies.
Obama arrived at the Fifth Summit of the Americas in Trinidad and Tobago yesterday promising to “listen and learn” from regional leaders. He got an earful.

In the weekend’s first speeches, Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega and Argentine President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner voiced grievances on issues

ranging from the U.S. drug war to American support for counterinsurgency movements of the 1980s. Both urged Obama to end the 47-year-old trade embargo against Cuba, the only country in the Americas excluded from the 34-nation summit.
“For many years, there have been traumatic relations,” Fernandez said. “I want you to know, Obama, that this is in no way a reproach against you. It’s simply an exercise to look back at what happened.”

Thus spake Zero:

"We have at times been disengaged, and at times we sought to dictate our terms," Obama said to loud applause. "But I pledge to you that we seek an equal partnership. There is no senior partner and junior partner in our relations."

Because a country that put a man on the moon and has a GDP equal to the next 4 highest combined is, of course, equal to one that imprisons political dissidents.

"The United States seeks a new beginning with Cuba... I know there is a longer journey that must be traveled in overcoming decades of mistrust, but there are critical steps we can take toward a new day."

Mistrust would be based on hosting soviet tactical nuclear weapons pointed at our cities, destabilizing the region with communist insurgencies and creating the conditions where people would gladly risk their lives in rickety boats to escape the "equitable paradise" with "re-distributive justice" that has been set up in Cuba.

""I have a lot to learn and I very much look forward to listening and figuring out how we can work together more effectively,""

God help us.

Appeals court cancels plans for offshore drilling
By NEDRA PICKLER – 17 hours ago
WASHINGTON (AP) — A federal appeals court ruled Friday that the Bush administration did not properly study the environmental impact of expanding oil and gas drilling off the Alaska coast and canceled a program to find new reserves.
A three-judge panel in Washington found that the Bush-era Interior Department failed to consider the effect on the environment and marine life before it began the process in August 2005 to expand an oil and gas leasing program in the Beaufort, Bering, and Chukchi seas.
It wasn't entirely clear whether the decision applies to other areas of the same expanded offshore drilling program, including tracks in the Gulf of Mexico and along the Atlantic Coast. Attorneys for the environmentalists and the industry said they think it would cancel the entire program, not just the Arctic region.
The appeals court ordered the department, now run by President Barack Obama's appointee Ken Salazar, to analyze the areas to determine environmental risks and potential damage before moving ahead with the program.
The seas off Alaska that were at the center of the suit are home to wildlife including polar bears, whales, seals, walruses and seabirds. The lawsuit was brought by three environmental groups that want to protect the ecosystem and the Native Village of Point Hope, Alaska, a tribe that lives off the wildlife on the Chukchi Sea coast.
The decision comes at a time when oil and gas producers are finding it increasingly difficult to find new reserves and boost production at home and abroad. Output from the biggest U.S. oil companies has largely been in decline in the past few years.
Even though most people recognize the names of the giant multinationals — Exxon Mobil, Shell, BP and others — they control less than 10 percent of the world's oil reserves. Most proven reserves — about 80 percent — are held by national, state-run companies like those in Venezuela and Saudi Arabia.

1. it's "tracts," not "tracks"

2. Ken Salazar, who single-handedly killed development of CO and WY oil shale last year

3. Yay! We get to buy more oil from Hugo!

So we need to socialize profits too, obviously. I have a slightly different suggestion, but I fear the horse I'd choose is already out of the barn.

Then afterwards, even with photo and video evidence freely available to anybody with an internet connection and a pair of eyes (even one eye will do), the administration will of course deny that this ever occurred.

OTOH - (h/t 3 wood):

Obama Gets History Lesson From Latin American Leaders

The Obama Apology Tour is in midstride."
Link: [Link: www.bloomberg.com...]

Thanks for the link Realwest.

Christina Kirchner: another in a long line of failing "leftist" leadership in Argentina. Her approval ratings stand at 29%. Her behavior is not uncommon in that she simply wants to project her own failures as well as Argentina's failures in the past to stop their own internal corruption and inability to focus on economic development.

Perhaps Kirchner should focus on her own nation and target Argentina's notorious cultural divide between the Europeans and natives of that country. This amongst a long list which includes corruption, rampant ageism, and their skewed vision of the Falkland Islands.

Last I checked Argentina was defaulting on World Bank loans. Currently they're still receiving loans including agreements with China. Money has been pouring in to that nation yet they fail to grasp the concept of a free market economy.

I always enjoy the opportunity to talk to recent immigrants and ask a few questions about global political issues from their perspective (and I just listen), and something I struck upon years ago, that I'm sure many other people know but not leftists, is that people don't appreciate the US supporting these thugs, be they from South America, Africa, or Asia. We're not the world's policeman- we can't help all these folks, as much as I know we'd like to. But normalizing relations with brutal regimes is really not in our best interests.

Seriously, consider this:

MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - President Barack Obama does not plan to have a one-on-one meeting with Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez at an upcoming summit of leaders, the White House said on Thursday.

In the photo that Charles posted, is Obama leaning away? Does his smile look pained or wary? Maybe. IMHO it's possible that Obama was caught flatfooted in a photo ambush planned by Chavez.
***
The last sentence of the photo caption:

Despite efforts by Obama and summit organizers to keep the three-day gathering on the topics of energy, the environment and public safety, Cuba has emerged as the headline issue for being the only nation excluded.

That, in the middle of the most dangerous economy since the 1930s. Is the MSM distorting the facts or are the Latin Americans really so unrealistic (not that we've been any better lately)?

There are a lot of photos of this event. Check them out. This was no "ambush." In several of the pictures Obama and Chavez are openly laughing together.

And he shook hands with Chavez again today.

That's just great...let him incubate as el presidente' there!

It is simply amazing how far some America bashing from the top goes with thugs from Cuba to Venezuela to Russia to Hamas to Iran to N. Korea to Hezbollah to Saudi Arabia to Turkey to France to Germany to China to the Taliban to, to, to...maybe he can give UBL an unconditional presidential pardon and chat him up with his one-man act consisting of 'America sure does suck' speak seasoned with a pot pouri of US self-loathing and garnished with bountiful bullshit of Bush bashing.

What a disgrace!

News revelation hot off the wire...Chavez: More popular with the American MSM than Obama!...those 'tingly feelings' streaming through the Matrix soon to follow.

Maybe they're hoping that Obama will rescue them from Chavez. Regime change, even.

You're right. I had done a quicklook in the google images section, but the damning photos are in news.

re: #139 Mad Mullah

Something is troubling when the POTUS is more friendly with enemies of the USA than with dependable allies, which he has no problems with insulting.

If Obama ever meets Ahmadinejad, I wouldn't be at all surprised if the skinny one were to perform fellatio on the bearded one, even though there are apparently no homosexuals in that joyful Islamic country. Then afterwards, even with photo and video evidence freely available to anybody with an internet connection and a pair of eyes (even one eye will do), the administration will of course deny that this ever occurred.

It is hard to imagine Obama getting off to a worse start than he has done so far.

Then we could have a famous stained suit coat...with the evidence? I'm sure he wouldn't want it thrown away.

re: #35 countrygurl

I too quit buying commie oil. Still buying facsist oil, however. damn it.

Be not worried since in a few short months we all can drive 'green' vehicles that reprotedly per the supreme ruler, prompted-potentate, exalted-leader and dictatorial-professorio's administration the green machine will run for 4,000 city miles on one mercury-filled lightbulb, but the downside is that the driver will have to walk and the bulb will cost approx. $4.95 per mile...

Too bad out dear leader won't parlay his popularity in Venezuela and the rest of Latin America into trying to get rid of that worthless commie piglet Chavez. Birds of a feather and all. Then again, maybe he won't want the competition for the worlds adoration.

re: #5 jcm

he has learned well at the feet of jimmy carter and rev. wright and william ayers.....

look down on the friends of america and show them no respect, for they truelly deserve none, they were lackey's to "the Man" and greet the enemies of america as a long lost brother, pure of heart and misunderstood by america which for too long was run by the evil white europeans.

for we all know its impossible for anyone but white european americans to really be evil. everyone else has just been misunderstood./
