United Nations Hypocrisy Writ Large

World • Views: 3,627

Writing in the New York Times, a former United Nations security officer describes what the UN did in Somalia in 1995, in response to a hostage situation.

In 1995, for example, the water supply for Mogadishu, the capital, was shut off by the United Nations humanitarian agencies until a hostage who worked for another aid organization was released. On the first day of the shutoff, the women who collected water from public distribution points yelled at the kidnappers; on the second day they stoned them; on the third day they shot at them; on the fourth day, the hostage was released.

Isn’t that interesting.

Imagine how the United Nations would react if Israel shut off the water supply to Gaza, in response to the kidnapping of Gilad Shalit.

I'm more shocked that the UN -acted- on something.

Oh...wait, it was to protect one of their own, not you know, to follow a mandate, protect innocents, or you know, do anything useful.

The UN is a forum that provides voice mainly to tyrants, despots and strong arm dictators - all those who by no stretch of the imagination, except perhaps Jimmy Carter's, represent anything but themselves. That they have equal voice as the few democratic powers is what makes the UN a farce.

Oh, there would be far more outrage and definitive action.....you know, like the action that we expect them to take against Iran, North Korea, Syria, Zimbabwe, the PRC, Cuba, Somalia, Venezuela, and the rest of the dispicable despotic nations that instead are fetted by this morally and intellectually bankrupt institution.

It's all part of the bankruptcy of the hard left. They don't want any action taken against the despots and tyrants in the world. When the US and 35 other nations decided that Saddam crossed all lines and went after him - the hard left said that the US should be going to Darfur. If the US went to Darfur, the hard left would whinge about Iraq or Zimbabwe being the greater horror. So, they try to freeze decisions and if that fails, whatever is done, is wrong.

Serious answer - because many of the decision makers believe that it is better for the US to be in the UN, engage from within the UN, and attempt to educate / counter / inform / operate from the inside as opposed to working from the outside with little influence.

It is an organization seriously in need of reform - but it will resist reform and the current Administration will put no pressure on reforming it or considering harsher corrective measures even though they must know that it is a broken institution.

Interesting, also, that communal punishment works, and that even repressed, persecuted third worlders can stand up for themselves and deter the terrorists in their midst, when they are--ahem--pressured to do so.

Tangentially related, and probably already posted elsewhere, but this is unbelievably heartwarming and wrenching at the same time:

The problem with these kinds of tactics against cities is that innocents always suffer more. The militants will go through the community and confiscate what is being withheld and simply smuggle in whatever else they need on top of that. Then use PR against the sanction makers.

So far, all they have talked abut doing is releasing hundreds of terrorists in exchange for Gilad's release. This would put the entire population of Israel at more risk for terror attacks, murders, and kidnappings. There has got to be a better response than freeing a bunch of Hamassholes.

I wish Israel would withold something-- electicity, water, supplies, etc. until Hamas releases Gilad Shalit. So far, all they have talked abut doing is releasing hundreds of terrorists in exchange for Gilad's release. This would put the entire population of Israel at more risk for terror attacks, murders, and kidnappings. There has got to be a better response than freeing a bunch of Hamassholes.

Its what they should stop withholding that is needed, aka its military.
But thats just my thoughts.

re: #31 Athos

It's all part of the bankruptcy of the hard left. They don't want any action taken against the despots and tyrants in the world. When the US and 35 other nations decided that Saddam crossed all lines and went after him - the hard left said that the US should be going to Darfur. If the US went to Darfur, the hard left would whinge about Iraq or Zimbabwe being the greater horror. So, they try to freeze decisions and if that fails, whatever is done, is wrong.

China gets oil from Somalia And Darfur, so Russia wanted to use the civil war to disrupt the flow of oil to China. Getting the United States to accomplish Russia's' ends, while draining our own resources in another war, would have been a real masterstroke.

OT: New nucleotides

Once upon a time, researchers knew that DNA contained four nucleotides: A, T, C and G. Then they found a fifth. And now they've found a sixth.

Called 5-hydroxymethylcytosine, it's a form of the fifth nucleotide, technically known as 5-methylcytosine. Like its forerunner, it helps turn genes on and off, but in ways that researchers didn't expect.
...
If 5-hydroxymethylcytosine is as unique and important as he says it is, new epigenetic measurement tools will need to be developed. The Human Epigenome Project may need to be recalibrated.

Everything you know is wrong.

Perhaps UN Headquarters could move to Mogadishu? They seem to understand the populace and how to get things done over there. I just heard Sec Def Gates say that piracy will continue to be a problem as long as there aren't jobs for Somali men. Building a new UN Headquarters would employ a whole lot of those guys.

They'd need an airport too. I suggest that John Murtha knows how to fleece US taxpayers for the cost of building a fancy airport. Perhaps he would have similar success getting money from governments all over the world?

Surely the Saudis and Kuwaitis would open their wallets to provide employment opportunities to their Islamic brothers?

re: #153 Mithrax

Alright. Lemme see what I've got around here to Kipple with....

There are many, many choices.

It is always a temptation to an armed and agile nation
To call upon a neighbour and to say: --
"We invaded you last night--we are quite prepared to fight,
Unless you pay us cash to go away."

And that is called asking for Dane-geld,
And the people who ask it explain
That you've only to pay 'em the Dane-geld
And then you'll get rid of the Dane!

It is always a temptation for a rich and lazy nation,
To puff and look important and to say: --
"Though we know we should defeat you, we have not the time to meet you.
We will therefore pay you cash to go away."

And that is called paying the Dane-geld;
But we've proved it again and again,
That if once you have paid him the Dane-geld
You never get rid of the Dane.

It is wrong to put temptation in the path of any nation,
For fear they should succumb and go astray;
So when you are requested to pay up or be molested,
You will find it better policy to say: --

"We never pay any-one Dane-geld,
No matter how trifling the cost;
For the end of that game is oppression and shame,
And the nation that pays it is lost!"

I saw that. I guess I wasn't entirely surprised. I still think our scientific understanding of the world is in its infantsy, so it doesn't surprise me to find that there is something major that we've missed in pretty much every field of science. That said, the structure of DNA has been such an area of interest for so many that I'm surprised something as basic as this seems to be hadn't been found. I wonder how this will effect the Human Genome project?

I'm at least mildly surprised. It's like, if someone discovered bits in my computer aren't necessarily 0 or 1, but sometimes they are 3.14159? We (that is, I) rather liked the program = DNA analogy, though I suppose we had lots of hints it was never going to be quite that easy.

Time will tell, if it holds up at all, just how important it may be.

And I raise you a Mandalay

By the old Moulmein Pagoda, lookin' eastward to the sea,
There's a Burma girl a-settin', and I know she thinks o' me;
For the wind is in the palm-trees, and the temple-bells they say:
"Come you back, you British soldier; come you back to Mandalay!"
Come you back to Mandalay,
Where the old Flotilla lay:
Can't you 'ear their paddles chunkin' from Rangoon to Mandalay?
On the road to Mandalay,
Where the flyin'-fishes play,
An' the dawn comes up like thunder outer China 'crost the Bay!

'Er petticoat was yaller an' 'er little cap was green,
An' 'er name was Supi-yaw-lat -- jes' the same as Theebaw's Queen,
An' I seed her first a-smokin' of a whackin' white cheroot,
An' a-wastin' Christian kisses on an 'eathen idol's foot:
Bloomin' idol made o'mud --
Wot they called the Great Gawd Budd --
Plucky lot she cared for idols when I kissed 'er where she stud!
On the road to Mandalay . . .

When the mist was on the rice-fields an' the sun was droppin' slow,
She'd git 'er little banjo an' she'd sing "Kulla-lo-lo!"
With 'er arm upon my shoulder an' 'er cheek agin' my cheek
We useter watch the steamers an' the hathis pilin' teak.
Elephints a-pilin' teak
In the sludgy, squdgy creek,
Where the silence 'ung that 'eavy you was 'arf afraid to speak!
On the road to Mandalay . . .

But that's all shove be'ind me -- long ago an' fur away,
An' there ain't no 'busses runnin' from the Bank to Mandalay;
An' I'm learnin' 'ere in London what the ten-year soldier tells:
"If you've 'eard the East a-callin', you won't never 'eed naught else."
No! you won't 'eed nothin' else
But them spicy garlic smells,
An' the sunshine an' the palm-trees an' the tinkly temple-bells;
On the road to Mandalay . . .

I am sick o' wastin' leather on these gritty pavin'-stones,
An' the blasted Henglish drizzle wakes the fever in my bones;
Tho' I walks with fifty 'ousemaids outer Chelsea to the Strand,
An' they talks a lot o' lovin', but wot do they understand?
Beefy face an' grubby 'and --
Law! wot do they understand?
I've a neater, sweeter maiden in a cleaner, greener land!
On the road to Mandalay . . .

Ship me somewheres east of Suez, where the best is like the worst,
Where there aren't no Ten Commandments an' a man can raise a thirst;
For the temple-bells are callin', an' it's there that I would be --
By the old Moulmein Pagoda, looking lazy at the sea;
On the road to Mandalay,
Where the old Flotilla lay,
With our sick beneath the awnings when we went to Mandalay!
On the road to Mandalay,
Where the flyin'-fishes play,

And I raise you a Mandalay

I'm a little weak on my poker terminology, but here goes:

I'll see your Mandalay and raise you a Brown Bess:

"Brown Bess"
The Army Musket 1700-1815

In the days of lace-ruffles, perukes and brocade
Brown Bess was a partner whom none could despise -
An out-spoken, flinty-lipped, brazen-faced jade,
With a habit of looking men straight in the eyes -
At Blenheim and Ramillies fops would confess
They were pierced to the heart by the charms of Brown Bess.

Though her sight was not long and her weight was not small,
Yet her actions were winning, her language was clear;
And everyone bowed as she opened the ball
On the arm of some high-gaitered, grim grenadier.
Half Europe admitted the striking success
Of the dances and routs that were given by Brown Bess.

When ruffles were turned into stiff leather stocks,
And people wore pigtails instead of perukes,
Brown Bess never altered her iron-grey locks.
She knew she was valued for more than her looks.
"Oh, powder and patches was always my dress,
And I think am killing enough," said Brown Bess.

So she followed her red-coats, whatever they did,
From the heights of Quebec to the plains of Assaye,
From Gibraltar to Acre, Cape Town and Madrid,
And nothing about her was changed on the way;
(But most of the Empire which now we possess
Was won through those years by old-fashioned Brown Bess.)

In stubborn retreat or in stately advance,
From the Portugal coast to the cork-woods of Spain,
She had puzzled some excellent Marshals of France
Till none of them wanted to meet her again:
But later, near Brussels, Napoleon - no less -
Arranged for a Waterloo ball with Brown Bess.

She had danced till the dawn of that terrible day -
She danced till the dusk of more terrible night,
And before her linked squares his battalions gave way,
And her long fierce quadrilles put his lancers to flight:
And when his gilt carriage drove off in the press,
"I have danced my last dance for the world!" said Brown Bess.

Where old weapons are shown with their names writ beneath,
You will find her, upstanding, her back to the wall,
As stiff as a ramrod, the flint in her teeth.
And if ever we English had reason to bless
Any arm save our mothers', that arm is Brown Bess!

Very much. I like a lot of poets.

On one of my many jaunts to ye olde chain bookshoppe, I sauntered past the bargain section and they had a wall filled with small little hardcover pocketsized books of poets. Normal price $15....sale price $4. The poor girl working behind the counter thought I was nuts when I walked up with all 20 at once :P

My father in Law just passed away this last September and he was a survivor of Auschwitz. I am saddened and selfishly I miss him, but I know he is in a better place seeing family he hasn't seen in 64 years. G-d bless the survivors that remain.

Certainly puts in perspective what we sometimes bitch and moan about.

Recessional by Kipling

God of our fathers, known of old--
Lord of our far-flung battle line
Beneath whose awful hand we hold
Dominion over palm and pine--
Lord God of Hosts, be with us yet,
Lest we forget - lest we forget!

The tumult and the shouting dies;
The captains and the kings depart:
Still stands Thine ancient sacrifice,
An humble and a contrite heart.
Lord God of Hosts, be with us yet,
Lest we forget - lest we forget!

Far-called, our navies melt away;
On dune and headland sinks the fire:
Lo, all our pomp of yesterday
Is one with Nineveh and Tyre!
Judge of the Nations, spare us yet,
Lest we forget - lest we forget!

If, drunk with sight of power, we loose
Wild tongues that have not Thee in awe--
Such boasting as the Gentiles use
Or lesser breeds without the law--
Lord God of Hosts, be with us yet,
Lest we forget - lest we forget!

For heathen heart that puts her trust
In reeking tube and iron shard--
All valiant dust that builds on dust,
And guarding, calls not Thee to guard--
For frantic boast and foolish word,
Thy mercy on Thy people, Lord!

I have pictures of Mr. ArmyWife with panties on his head. It was after more bottles of Jack Daniels than should have been consumed by young gentlemen, and the group was in rare form. They lit a glass of jack on fire - "The Eternal Flame of Jack" as I recall. that stuff burns a long time. It was funnier to them than me. Probably because I was sober and I think pregnant. Anyway, back to the topic at hand.

Its my belief that no government even a bunch of heavily armed thugs like the hamassholes could survive a real popular uprising. This might be even more true someplace like the strip where the public in general is also very armed. The question is with how brainwashed it seems so many PalArabs are. Would they rise against the thugs or would they just continue to blame everything on Israel.

The truth probably is if the people didn't rise up against the thugs Israel would turn the water back on before people died because they just aren't that heartless. Apparently the people in Somalia had a good notion the UN would let them die if they didn't get what they wanted. And I have no doubt if the tables were turned and it was Jews in Gaza the Pals would have turned off the water in 48 and it would never have come back on.

How about a little Robert Burns?

Holly Willie's Prayer.

O Thou that in the Heavens does dwell,
Wha, as it pleases best Thysel,
Sends ane to Heaven, an ten to Hell,
A' for Thy glory,
And no for onie guid or ill
They've done before Thee!

I bless and praise Thy matchless might,
When thousands Thou has left in night,
That I am here before Thy sight,
For gifts an grace
A burning and a shining light
To a' this place.

What was I, or my generation,
That I should get sic exaltation?
I, wha deserv'd most just damnation
For broken laws,
Sax thousand years ere my creation,
Thro Adam's cause!

When from my mither's womb I fell,
Thou might hae plung'd me deep in Hell,
To gnash my gooms, and weep and wail,
In burning lakes,
Whare damned devils roar and yell,
Chain'd to their stakes.

Yet I am here a chosen sample,
To show Thy grace is great and ample:
I'm here a pillar o Thy temple,
Strong as a rock,
A guide, a buckler, and example,
To a' Thy flock!

But yet, O Lord! confess I must,
At times I'm fash'd wi fleshy lust;
An sometimes, too, in warldly trust,
Vile self gets in;
But Thou remembers we are dust,
Defil'd wi sin.

O Lord! yestreen, Thou kens, wi Meg
Thy pardon I sincerely beg
O, may't ne'er be a livin plague
To my dishonour!
An I'll ne'er lift a lawless leg
Again upon her.

Besides, I farther maun avow,
Wi Leezie's lass, three times I trow
But, Lord, that Friday I was fou,
When I cam near her,
Or else, Thou kens, Thy servant true
Wad never steer her.

Maybe Thou lets this fleshly thorn
Buffet Thy servant e'en and morn,
Lest he owre proud and high should turn,
That he's sae gifted:
If sae, Thy han' maun e'en be borne,
Until Thou lift it.

Lord, bless Thy chosen in this place,
For here Thou has a chosen race!
But God confound their stubborn face,
An blast their name,
Wha bring Thy elders to disgrace
An open shame.

Lord, mind Gau'n Hamilton's deserts:
He drinks, an swears, an plays at cartes,
Yet has sae monie takin arts,
Wi great and sma',
Frae God's ain Priest the people's hearts
He steals awa.

And when we chasten'd him therefore,
Thou kens how he bred sic a splore,
And set the warld in a roar
O laughin at us;
Curse Thou his basket and his store,
Kail an potatoes!

Lord, hear my earnest cry and pray'r,
Against that Presbyt'ry o Ayr!
Thy strong right hand, Lord, mak it bare
Upo' their heads!
Lord, visit them, an dinna spare,
For their misdeeds!

200 Dark_Falcon  Sun, Apr 19, 2009 5:36:59pm

Here's a good Kipling poem to praise the NATO ships working to patrol the sea lanes:

Cruisers

1899

As our mother the Frigate, bepainted and fine,
Made play for her bully the Ship of the Line;
So we, her bold daughters by iron and fire,
Accost and decoy to our masters' desire.

Now, pray you, consider what toils we endure,
Night-walking wet sea-lanes, a guard and a lure;
Since half of our trade is that same pretty sort
As mettlesome wenches do practise in port.

For this is our office: to spy and make room,
As hiding yet guiding the foe to their doom.
Surrounding, confounding, we bait and betray
And tempt them to battle the seas' width away.

The pot-bellied merchant foreboding no wrong
With headlight and sidelight he lieth along,
Till, lightless and lightfoot and lurking, leap we
To force him discover his business by sea.

And when we have wakened the lust of a foe,
To draw him by flight toward our bullies we go,
Till, 'ware of strange smoke stealing nearer, he flies
Or our bullies close in for to make him good prize.

So, when we have spied on the path of their host,
One flieth to carry that word to the coast;
And, lest by false doublings they turn and go free,
One lieth behind them to follow and see.

Anon we return, being gathered again,
Across the sad valleys all drabbled with rain --
Across the grey ridges all crisped and curled --
To join the long dance round the curve of the world.

The bitter salt spindrift, the sun-glare likewise,
The moon-track a-tremble, bewilders our eyes,
Where, linking and lifting, our sisters we hail
'Twixt wrench of cross-surges or plunge of head-gale.

As maidens awaiting the bride to come forth
Make play with light jestings and wit of no worth,
So, widdershins circling the bride-bed of death,
Each fleereth her neighbour and signeth and saith: --

"What see ye? Their signals, or levin afar?
"What hear ye? God's thunder, or guns of our war?
"What mark ye? Their smoke, or the cloud-rack outblown?
"What chase ye? Their lights, or the Daystar low down?"

So, times past all number deceived by false shows,
Deceiving we cumber the road of our foes,
For this is our virtue: to track and betray;
Preparing great battles a sea's width away.

Now peace is at end and our peoples take heart,
For the laws are clean gone that restrained our art;
Up and down the near headlands and against the far wind
We are loosed (O be swift!) to the work of our kind!

One more for our vets:

Tommy - Kipling

I went into a public-'ouse to get a pint o' beer,
The publican 'e up an' sez, "We serve no red-coats here."
The girls be'ind the bar they laughed an' giggled fit to die,
I outs into the street again an' to myself sez I:
O it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "Tommy, go away";
But it's "Thank you, Mister Atkins", when the band begins to play,
The band begins to play, my boys, the band begins to play,
O it's "Thank you, Mister Atkins", when the band begins to play.

I went into a theatre as sober as could be,
They gave a drunk civilian room, but 'adn't none for me;
They sent me to the gallery or round the music-'alls,
But when it comes to fightin', Lord! they'll shove me in the stalls!
For it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "Tommy, wait outside";
But it's "Special train for Atkins" when the trooper's on the tide,
The troopship's on the tide, my boys, the troopship's on the tide,
O it's "Special train for Atkins" when the trooper's on the tide.

Yes, makin' mock o' uniforms that guard you while you sleep
Is cheaper than them uniforms, an' they're starvation cheap;
An' hustlin' drunken soldiers when they're goin' large a bit
Is five times better business than paradin' in full kit.
Then it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "Tommy, 'ow's yer soul?"
But it's "Thin red line of 'eroes" when the drums begin to roll,
The drums begin to roll, my boys, the drums begin to roll,
O it's "Thin red line of 'eroes" when the drums begin to roll.

We aren't no thin red 'eroes, nor we aren't no blackguards too,
But single men in barricks, most remarkable like you;
An' if sometimes our conduck isn't all your fancy paints,
Why, single men in barricks don't grow into plaster saints;
While it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "Tommy, fall be'ind",
But it's "Please to walk in front, sir", when there's trouble in the wind,
There's trouble in the wind, my boys, there's trouble in the wind,
O it's "Please to walk in front, sir", when there's trouble in the wind.

You talk o' better food for us, an' schools, an' fires, an' all:
We'll wait for extry rations if you treat us rational.
Don't mess about the cook-room slops, but prove it to our face
The Widow's Uniform is not the soldier-man's disgrace.
For it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "Chuck him out, the brute!"
But it's "Saviour of 'is country" when the guns begin to shoot;
An' it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' anything you please;
An' Tommy ain't a bloomin' fool -- you bet that Tommy sees!

WWII vets are leaving us at an alarming rate (may God rest their souls); they were in their late teens to thirties...many of the survivors of the Nazi camps were children.

On another site, I found this speech to a group of WWII vets - Speech by Judge Vince Okamoto at the 66th Anniversay of the 442nd Combat Team on March 29, 2009 in Honolulu.

Veterans are many of the men in this room today; each with their own compelling story. Each of whom left their homes, families, and loved ones and went off to war with no expectation of reward or even thank you, but went because they felt it was their duty, and went because someone had to go.

In our society some men are lionized for their great wealth, or their political power, or their social position. Some are renowned for their athletic ability. Others are accorded celebrity status as film stars or rock icons. But of all the titles in the world I believe the proudest is that of veteran because it refers to an individual who was willing to give up everything for America.

In William Shakespeare’s play “Henry the 5th,” the king of England on the eve of the last great battle of the One Hundred Years War, stood before his beleaguered and out numbered soldiers and said to them,

”We few, we happy few, we band of brothers, for he who sheds his blood with me this day until the ending of the world is my brother.”

The veterans who wore the uniform of this country are a brotherhood. They represent less than 7% of the population making them members of the most exclusive fraternity in America, forever connected by a shared sense of duty, commitment and willingness to sacrifice their lives that set them apart and make them different from everyone else in our society.

To the young people in the audience tonight…I say remember and honor those who fought, bled, and died for you. Remember that the blessings and unlimited opportunities we Japanese Americans enjoy today are ours in large measure because we stand on the shoulders of giants; men small in stature, but titans in courage, the soldiers of the 442nd RCT.

What they did allowed and prepared us their beneficiaries to live in a larger and better world.

We owe a debt to all of our veterans for their sacrifice that can be only partially paid by our dedication to the values of this country.

We also owe a debt of all of the victims of evil. Never Again.

It's about the decline of empire. That applies to the Age of Obama.

But...but...I thought America wasn't an empire?!

If it is - all right, it is - then the decline was well underway in the Age of Bush II, the Age of Clinton, the Age of Bush I...with a bit of a resurgence under Reagan...the Age of Carter, the Age of Ford, the Age of Nixon...need I continue?

Empires decline and fall. America will be no exception.

Be Angry At The Sun

That public men publish falsehoods
Is nothing new. That America must accept
Like the historical republics corruption and empire
Has been known for years.

Be angry at the sun for setting
If these things anger you. Watch the wheel slope and turn,
They are all bound on the wheel, these people, those warriors.
This republic, Europe, Asia.

Observe them gesticulating,
Observe them going down. The gang serves lies, the passionate
Man plays his part; the cold passion for truth
Hunts in no pack.

You are not Catullus, you know,
To lampoon these crude sketches of Caesar. You are far
From Dante's feet, but even farther from his dirty
Political hatreds.

Let boys want pleasure, and men
Struggle for power, and women perhaps for fame,
And the servile to serve a Leader and the dupes to be duped.
Yours is not theirs.

Ozymandias

I met a traveller from an antique land
Who said: "Two vast and trunkless legs of stone
Stand in the desert. Near them on the sand,
Half sunk, a shattered visage lies, whose frown
And wrinkled lip and sneer of cold command
Tell that its sculptor well those passions read
Which yet survive, stamped on these lifeless things,
The hand that mocked them and the heart that fed.
And on the pedestal these words appear:
`My name is Ozymandias, King of Kings:
Look on my works, ye mighty, and despair!'
Nothing beside remains. Round the decay
Of that colossal wreck, boundless and bare,
The lone and level sands stretch far away.

And so it goes...

Its my belief that no government even a bunch of heavily armed thugs like the hamassholes could survive a real popular uprising.

I disagree; I think that any competent dictatorship given a mid-1930s level of technology, and given enough funds to bribe over half the armed proportion of the populace, is uprising-proof. Gaza is uprising-proof.

The truth probably is if the people didn't rise up against the thugs Israel would turn the water back on before people died because they just aren't that heartless. Apparently the people in Somalia had a good notion the UN would let them die if they didn't get what they wanted.

There you've hit on it.

Somalis have been despised by the world; until now that they've turned to piracy, such that they're actively hated.

The same could be said about Palestinians, given the messes they've made in Lebanon, Jordan, Kuwait etc. If Gaza were located near, say, Hama in Syria it would have been a place for archaeologists to dig over by now. But Gaza isn't in Syria; it's on the Israeli side of the Sinai border. Gaza is kept the way it is because of international antiSemitism.

There aren't any Jews to hate in Somalia; there are only Somalis. And the Somalis know that, which is why the UN feels comfortable doing whatever they like to keep the Somalis in line.
