Ban Ki-moon Issues Incredibly Weak Statement on Ahmadinejad

World | Tue, Apr 21, 2009 at 1:28:36 pm PDT

United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon plays dumb.

VALLETTA (Reuters) – UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon accused Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad Tuesday of misusing a UN conference on racism at which he attacked Israel’s policy toward the Palestinians as racist.

“It is very regretful that the conference was misused by the Iranian president for political purposes,” Ban said during an official visit to Malta.

Right. What a shock. Who could ever have seen that coming?

Very typical of the UN and Ban Ki-moonbat to issue something less than a light glove slap to Ahmadinejad's face. They're starting to make the League of Nations look effective.

What an oddly written article....

The president discussed the issue of terrorism-era interrogation tactics with reporters as he finished an Oval Office meeting with visiting King Abdullah II of Jordan.

Obama also said he could support a congressional investigation into the Bush-era terrorist detainee program, but only under certain conditions, such as if it were done on a bipartisan basis.

Bingo!

“It is very regretful that the conference was misused by the Iranian president for political purposes,” Ban said during an official visit to Malta.

Ban Ki-moon could care less about Israel. He, and the U.N., have no intention of discouraging Iran from trying to wipe out Israel.

33 dhg4  Tue, Apr 21, 2009 1:36:51pm

The NYT included a nice clueless moment to close out its article about the speech:

Those who supported the Obama administration’s attending the conference said their attitude was not altered by Mr. Ahmadinejad’s remarks. “It is unfortunate that the inappropriate and out-of-line remarks of Ahmadinejad would obscure the only international forum to address racism, racial discrimination and xenophobia,” Representative Barbara Lee, Democrat of California, said in a statement by the Congressional Black Caucus.

When you put a bunch of despots in charge of a conference of racism and xenophobia, what do you expect?

68 lawhawk  Tue, Apr 21, 2009 1:41:57pm

I call BS on Ban Ki Moon. He and his staffers met with Ahmadinejad to water down the language of his keynote speech, and Ahmadinejad still made a mockery of the whole thing with his disgusting rant. This was what Moon was able to do.

More to the point, 100 countries reaffirmed Durban 1, which singles out one country for specific action: Israel.

It's the same damned outcome as the first Durban conference, and Moon sees nothing wrong with that. In fact, UN spokespeople were busy saying that Durban II repudiates Iran's Ahmadinejad. It does nothing of the sort. It reaffirms what Ahmadinejad said.

72 dhg4  Tue, Apr 21, 2009 1:42:18pm

I think Martin Peretz is too generous about President Obama's eloquence, but his point is still spot on.

Allow me a vernacular quibble. One fact about your speaking is that it is ordinarily incisive and concise. So I was rather taken aback by the clumsiness of your explanation about why we were not going to Geneva. The language of the draft resolutions for Geneva "raised a whole set of objectionable provisions" and, as Cnaan Liphshiz reported in Ha'aretz, risked a reprise of the 2001 predecessor summit in Durban. This, you argued, "became a session through which folks expressed antagonism towards Israel in ways that were often times completely hypocritical and counterproductive."

These people whom you call "folks"--they were not people assembled at a "hootenanny"--were formal representatives of governments, some democratic, most not. They are not dumb. They were not being "counterproductive." They knew exactly what they were doing. And they were not being "hypocritical." They said exactly what they believed. And all that they said was actually false.

What the President considers "counterproductive," I found entirely "predictable," and Ahmadinejad probaby considered it "advancing his agenda."

73 MTF  Tue, Apr 21, 2009 1:42:23pm

What's even more shocking is that this dumb shit seems to think no one will criticize him for saying it was "political". What, are the rest of the UN's meetings political? I'd fire his butt all the way back to Seoul just for organizing the world wide "Everybody hates the Jews" conference anyway, and capping it off with this BS just makes it pathetic.

Obama’s speciality is shaping up to be particularly dangerous because it’s hard to dispute given the average American’s sensibilities. No call for liberty and constitutional principle seems convincing when Obama is arguing that those relying on government giveaways should have to follow government-set rules. That is, once you’ve allowed them to go ahead with the handouts, the political game is almost over. Under the guise of “managing the taxpayers’ money", Obama and his crew are rewriting mortgages, deciding executive compensation, tossing out CEO’s. And note carefully that his plans for where taxpayers’ money should go continue to swell, from healthcare to the environment to energy policy to expanded “national service” programs. When taxpayers’ money is everywhere - and Obama is doing his best to make sure it is - then Obama’s control is everywhere. The Octo-potus is claiming his space and flexing his grip. As far as he’s concerned, it’s Barack Obama’s country. We’re just living in it.

Here's what Ban did
:

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad dropped language describing the Holocaust as "ambiguous and dubious" from a speech attacking Israel at a United Nations racism conference, the UN Said Tuesday.

The UN and the Iranian Mission in Geneva did not comment on why the change was made, but UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said Monday that he had met with Ahmadinejad before his speech and reminded him that the UN had adopted resolutions "to revoke the equation of Zionism with racism and to reaffirm the historical facts of the Holocaust."

Oooh. That really taught Ahmadinejad. He simply reworked his phrasing and still called Israel's existence into question, and his entourage felt it appropriate to call a Holocaust survivor, Elie Wiesel, a Zion-Nazi. Yeah, well played Sec. Gen. Ban Ki Moon.

Ok, it looks like there's more to Obama's statement.....
Obama: Be careful with any CIA investigations

Update at 2 p.m. ET: As reporters wait for press secretary Robert Gibbs, the office of Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell is sending around an e-mail expressing puzzlement over Obama's comments regarding possible prosecutions. The e-mail says:

There is starting to be some news about how the President is now “open†to prosecuting former Bush administration officials related to interrogation policies of terrorists. While this is a change from what the administration has been saying, and from what Gibbs said just yesterday, I thought it might be good to review what the White House Chief of Staff said 48 hours ago:

EMANUEL: “Yes, but those who devised policy, he believes that they were -- should not be prosecuted either, and that's not the place that we go -- as he said in that letter, and I would really recommend people look at the full statement -- not the letter, the statement -- in that second paragraph, "this is not a time for retribution." It's time for reflection. It's not a time to use our energy and our time in looking back and any sense of anger and retribution.â€Â (This Week, ABC News, April 19, 2009)

It looks like Obama gave a poorly worded and ambiguous answer. However, I expect a lot of people to freak out over this one.

Just stands to reason. However, Ban Ki-moon much to his credit did say the following:

"Denying historical facts, especially on such an important subject as the Holocaust, is just not acceptable. Nor is it acceptable to call for the elimination of any State or people. I would like to see this fundamental principle respected both in rhetoric and in practice by all the members of the international community."

... in 2006.

Also if you look at http://www.un.org/holocaustremembrance/ it hasn't been updated in a good long while. Seems to me that it's just a token "effort".

There's a good reason to be concerned over Obama's statement. He knew, or had reason to know, that any poorly worded statement on how the Administration would deal with those involved in the interrogations would result in an outcry. They did so in any event.

They put out a statement that could be construed as leaving the door open, even as the Administration was busy saying that they wouldn't. What are people to believe? There wasn't a complete bar to prosecuting those involved in the decision making process, which is what should have been the case.

Every statement made by Obama comes with an expiration date.

Reminder: Israel did not spring fully-formed from the ashes of the Holocaust. It came into being because there had been 60 years of labor to build the infrastructure of the hoped-for, dreamed-for state prior to Israeli independence. To build this infrastructure they had to fight restrictive laws under the Ottomans and under the British; poverty; inhospitable, worn-out soil, drought, swamp and malaria; and constant jihad from their Arab neighbors.

As an independent state, Israel is only about 20 years younger than the oldest states in the region, as most of these states, like the Land of Israel, had been part of the Ottoman Empire prior to the end of WWI. Israel is not a newcomer.

And MEMO to OBAMA: Israel is not at,in, near or anticipating any ABYSS. The abyss is all those NONDEMOCRATIC "countries" that surround Israel that are economic and moral failures. Take a history course asshole.

All those countries that claim Israel is illegitimate are themselves little different than Israel - formed as a result of carving up the Ottoman Empire by the Brits and French. Lebanon, Syria - the Levant - had French influence (still seen by the French inspired design of Beirut, etc.) The British influence extended South - into Israel, Jordan, and the Arabia Peninsula.

The legitimacy of those borders - those regimes - is based on decisions made by colonial powers a scant few years prior to Israel's very existence born from a colonial mandate in Palestine.

It's what happens when you are tripping over yourself to disguise what you really mean with what is palapable to say. Happens to this administration and Congress a lot. They can't be clear. They have to obfuscate and make people feel hopey-changey warm and fuzzy until it's too late - i.e., billions spent, crushing debt for generations, projection weak leadership, dissing the country and it's people, etc.

That is so true russ, maybe that's why turn likes Newt so much. He doesn't obfuscate.

No. It would have been impossible in my mind to convince the American people that their ally was bad enough to take on. Especially not after the bloodletting that had just ended.
And in retrospect, it is good that we didn't. Sure we stood eyeball to eyeball in the Cold War and fought peripheral actions during the course of it but in the end the risk of nuclear annhilation kept them from launching their tank divisions through the Fulda Gap. They were evil fuckers, but rational ones all the same. It was fitting that Reagan brought them down without there being another World War.

Every time I see the name Ban Ki-Moon, I remember a certain popular anime from a number of years ago. It makes me wonder if there is a Ban Ki-Senshi.

Ban Ki-Moon - An immature crybaby who hates having to fight evil and wants nothing more than to be a normal girl. As she progresses, however, she embraces the chance to use her power to protect those she cares about.

Ban Ki-Mercury - Power over all phases of water. Shy exterior masks a passion for knowledge and for taking care of the people around her.

Ban Ki-Mars - She can manipulate fire. She is very serious and focused.

Ban Ki-Jupiter - Attacks with lightning and with some control over plants. She cultivates her physical strength as well as more domestic interests.

Ban Ki-Venus - Soldier of Love, and leads Ban Ki-Moon's four inner guardians.

Ban Ki-Pluto - The Guardian of Time, who has the task of protecting the Space-Time Door from unauthorized travelers. She has a distant personality and can be very stern, but can also be quite friendly and helps the younger Ban Ki-Senshi when she can.

Ban Ki-Neptune - Channels the power of the ocean. She worked alone for some time before finding her partner, Ban Ki-Uranus, with whom she fell in love.

Ban Ki-Uranus - Soldier of the Sky. She tends to dress and speak like a man. She is so friendly and genial that nearly everyone she meets is attracted to her. When it comes to fighting the enemy, however, she distrusts outside help and prefers to work solely with Ban Ki-Neptune and, later, Pluto and Saturn.

Ban Ki-Saturn - Soldier of Silence. She wields forces of destruction so powerful that she is rarely called upon to use them, and unlike the others, her Senshi and civilian personae seem somewhat disconnected. She is often pensive, and has the inexplicable power to heal others.

Dunno about Hungary '56.
At the same time Anthony Eden (a British Prime Minister ...) and the French were engaged in taking over the Suez Canal, from Nasser. By force. Eisenhower had to deal with that - and some historians hint that this circumstance allowed the Soviets to invade Hungary - they knew there would not be any American opposition.

Abdiwali Abdiqadir Muse grew up destitute in Somalia, the product of a violent, lawless nation where his mother scraped together a few dollars a day selling milk and tending to a small herd of camels, cows and goats.

For entertainment, he would frequent a run-down outdoor cinema and watch Bollywood movies in a town with no running water or electricity. He eventually joined up with a gang of pirates who laid siege to an American cargo ship and took the captain hostage. The standoff ended last week with three of the pirates killed by U.S. Navy snipers. Muse survived but was stabbed in the hand with an ice pick.

On Tuesday, the teenager found himself a world away from the dusty tenements and pirate ships of Somalia, appearing in a packed federal courtroom in New York on what are believed to be the first piracy charges in the U.S. in more than a century.

The 5-foot-2 Muse looked bewildered and so scrawny that his prison clothes were several sizes too big. He had a frayed white bandage where he was stabbed.

Boo fucking hoo. AP wants me to feel SORRY for this little criminal? Bullshit. He belongs in a jail cell where he can enjoy all the comforts of modern life that are unavailable to him in his failed country. And that's probably too good for him.

Yes, it would have been a killfest on both sides. Our war losses would have LEAPT into the seven figures, maybe eight. Stalin would have cheerfully sent millions more of his own into the meat grinder. He didn't give a shit.

Did the Russians have the manpower to continue against the US? Imagine if the Marines finished off Japan and then subsequently took Vladivostok. I honestly think the US could have won it, but it would have been a hard sell for the American people. I think we could have pushed the Soviet Union into collapse long before we defeated them militarily.

I don't think there's much of a chance that Obama will prosecute anyone over interrogations. I don't think he wants to. It's a potentially serious situation but I don't think it's going to happen.

You better be right. I'd rather people hyperventilated than that the Obama administration starts playing that stupid, dangerous game.

I've got a question for you guys. Knowing what we do about how absolutely terrible Communist governments were in the 20th century, if you could go back in time Quantum Leap-style and leap into Harry Truman's body, would you have given the go-ahead to fight the Russians in '45?

The atomic bomb was in its final phase of development. We had the advantage of long-range bombers (to hit the most remote factories in eastern Russia) and a general staff (Patton) that could have rolled them up. Hell yes, I would have given the go-ahead.

I think the Soviets had a great advantage on land due to the fact that the bulk of their manpower was in the Army. America, while powerful, had to divide it's manpower among the Navy, Marines and Air Force.
Of course the Soviets had sufferred millions of casualties but in defense of their Motherland they would have been a formidable opponent. It would have taken nukes IMO to defeat them.

Very true, Buzz
that being said, I just remembered that my Rabbi did remind us all last week, that Yom Ha Shoah was originally called “Yom Ha Shoah Ve-Ha Gevurah” , Ha Gevurah meaning strength . It actually commemorates the anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto uprising.

Abolish the UN!
This a link to an English article on a German site by a German literature critic who lives in New York. He calls for the UN to be abolished and talks some of the history of the UN and the disgusting roles that organization played since it's inception.

"....... All in all, the conference in Durban was a pogrom wearing the black tie of diplomacy. ....... Alger Hiss ....... „Venona cables“ .......
Only three groups by now derive any discernible profit from the UN’s existence:
(a) Antisemites. .......
(b) Pedophiles. .......
(c) Genocidal murderers. .......
....... Faced with the antisemitic farce that is now taking place under the UN’s auspices in Geneva the time has come to draw consequences. Let me put them in the nerdy terms of computer technology: a reboot won’t do the trick, the hard drive needs to be replaced. This means: US – out of the UN! And UN – out of the US! Let this organization lead a shady afterlife in Tehran, Tripolis or Caracas while we consider what better alternative we might replace it with." Hannes Stein

Read the whole article well worth it.
The website, by the way is a conglomeration of politically incorrect and non-mainstream journalist who write against the opinions de jour. 'Achse des Guten' translates literally to 'Axis of the Good'.

I wouldn't exactly rely on the UN when it comes to trusting them in doing the right thing, they rarely do. The US should never, ever rely on that corrupt and crooked organization for approval on any matters which are of even the slightest importance.

The UN isn't just a platform for various countries to meet and discuss anymore. It's turning more and more into a place where primitive, thug countries often voting en masse are hijacking various agencies and are attempting to pass ridiculous laws such as prohibiting freedom of speech while legitimizing their own barbaric practices. The US certainly doesn't need any corrupt and fascist "world government" passing ridiculous laws and telling them what to do. The US also doesn't need a bunch of idiotic Europeans with their brains up their asses and their heads bowed towards Mecca deciding that Americans are war criminals and should stand trial in their "international" joke of a court.

When the asylum has been taken over by the inmates, then it's probably a good idea to leave, and I hope to see the day when the US kicks the UN out of this country for good. What good is the UN anyhow? Right behind Al-Qaeda, they're probably one of the biggest threats to any American in my opinion.

Interesting how this day has become the universal remembrance day for all victims of the Holocaust, but the Gevurah part we have left out, even in the name.
We need to remember that we are not sheep being led to slaughter but have defied all mortal enemies over the past 3 - 4000 years.

Dump the UN. Time for it to go the way of the League of Nations. It is a corrupt, useless organization most of the time, and the rest of the time it is overtly harmful.

Whatever replaces it can start by denying membership to any nation that allows itself to be governed by a bearded, racist chimp.

Well, there should be an automatic suspension, followed by expulsion, for calling for the destruction of a member state.

“It is very regretful that the conference was misused by the Iranian president for political purposes, and hey why the hell did you people bring me to Malta if the action is in Geneva?” Ban said during an official visit to Malta. Later Ban was heard to mutter " I still don't know what Amajimmydad said, could someone explain it to me ?"

UN chief: economic crisis threatens more racism Excerpts:

"I fear that today's economic crisis, if not handled properly, could evolve into a full-scale political crisis marked by social unrest, weakened governments and angry publics who have lost faith in their leaders and their own future," the U.N. chief said.
[snip]

Addressing intolerance in its various forms, Ban said racism "may be institutionalized, as the Holocaust will always remind us," but that it may manifest itself in more subtle forms through the "hatred of a particular people or a class — as anti-Semitism, for example, or the newer Islamophobia."

Spread the wealth or else. Is that the message?

Let's keep the UN in NYC.

Let's just not give it any of our money and

Charge it the going rate for leasing that property in Lower Manhattan,

Charge it the property taxes common for that type property,

And charge it for its water, electricity, trash pickup and sewer use.

A contadiction in terms. "Hatred of a particular people or race" is not a phobia, as defined as an irrational fear. Ban boom doesnt even know correct English

Muslims are ganging up on Ahmadinnerjacket's videos on YouTube and spamming anti-Israel and anti-American messages. We need an organized effort to fight back.

E.g. Look at the amount of Islamist postings on this video:

I am amazed that the United Nations spoke out against the same racism they were openly endorsing only one year ago. They would "condemn Israel" at just about every opportunity. I find their new stance to be refreshing, not abominable.
It ain't much, but it is likely all you'll get.

278 Pupdawg  Tue, Apr 21, 2009 7:11:16pm

Take note that the position espoused by Ahmadinejad was not condemned by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon rather the point that he used the conference on racism to do so was a boo boo.

I see nuts are not in season at the UN with management as usual.
