Amazon’s Got Groceries

Lifestyle • Views: 2,418

If you need groceries (and who doesn’t?), you may not be aware that you can now get a lot of your most common items at Amazon; staples like paper products, and packaged goods like oatmeal, coffee, tea, nutrition bars, soft drinks, etc. I’ve been ordering stuff this way for months, and I recommend it without reservation. And if you sign up for Amazon Prime shipping it’s amazingly economical. Here are the latest Amazon Grocery Sales & Special Offers.

I’ve never (well, only once) considered paper products to be groceries.

11 Buster Bunny  Tue, Apr 21, 2009 9:36:30pm

Tinned goods, dry goods, anything that basically comes in a can and will last for years probably is the best stuff to get from Amazon.

12 Racer X  Tue, Apr 21, 2009 9:37:00pm

Can I order me up some Ribs and Whiskey?

13 Mostly sane, most of the time.  Tue, Apr 21, 2009 9:37:45pm

Actually, you can (I have reason to know this) get some unusual items there. Citric acid & honeycomb & cacao beans, all of which have educational purposes.

(I am serious. Showing my kids how things get made is a passion of mine. I needed the citric acid for an endothermic reaction.)

15 Buster Bunny  Tue, Apr 21, 2009 9:38:23pm

I think its about time I started stocking up. I mean .. after all .. the Y3k bug will happen and I might be unprepared. So I figure with 991 years foresight I should be safe this time around.

Amazon Prime, by the way, is one of the most awesome deals on the web. Order anything you want, no price limit, and get unlimited 2-day shipping, for only $79 a year. One-day shipping for $3.99.

I’ve been working the heck out of this program for 3 years.

19 Killgore Trout  Tue, Apr 21, 2009 9:41:10pm

Interesting…..
Golden Banyan Dry White Flower Shitake Mushroom, 1 Pound Bags
That’s actually a pretty good deal. There’s a lot of flavor (and health benefits) in those ‘shrooms. I’m contributing a recipe for the next LGF cookbook called “Happy Lucky One Week Porkchop Udon Noodle Party”. It requires shitakes, order your mushrooms in advance.

20 Fenway_Nation  Tue, Apr 21, 2009 9:41:14pm

I actually found that out about two weeks ago when I did a search for Andy Capp Hot Fries, Polar soda, licoriche and birch beer.

I was surprised to see it and at the time figured this was something that everybody but me knew about.

I had Prime for a year but I went off it since I always order at least $25 and you get free shipping, though not the 2-day. About the food, I’ve had lots of Amazon food shipments, popcorn, granola bars, pancake mixes, all kinds of stuff. So if I order through this site, does it help support it? How do I do that?

You need to find a good oriental market. I find it when I am in the D.C. area—there are a lot of markets in the surrounding areas.

55 realwest  Tue, Apr 21, 2009 10:00:32pm

Hmmm - well either I don’t eat the “name brand stuff” that Amazon sells, or their similar stuff isn’t priced much better - if at all, than at Harris-Teeter (BIG department store Chain down here). In fact there Kona Coffee whole beans is actually more expensive than is the HT Kona whole beans cost, same size bag (12 oz.).
However, if Charles gets anything outta this, I’m more than willing to give it a try!

They love toilet paper. They count the ways, and grabbing and running is just one of the tricks. Stuffing a roll down the toilet (rolled or unrolled), wrapping themselves like mummies, or decorating anything and everything as if it were crepe paper party streamers. re: #93 Pvt Bin Jammin

There is nothing worse. I mean how clean are your own hands when you just keep reaching up there to get one more square? Sick and cheap.

Ouch. Better hope the soap dispenser is working. One square at a time. That reminds me of Sheryl Crowe. In 50 years they’ll have the Memorial Sheryl Crowe TP Dispenser.

Please insert $1.00 for another square. //

re: #94 Silvergirl

Why do they have those rolls that sit on top of the other? When the bottom one is empty, how does the other one come down? Someone clue me in. There has to be a better way than reaching up and breaking it off one square at a time. I need to work as a janitor so I can discover the secret.

I think the janitor is supposed to unlock it to drop the next one. Something like that.

It’s how the “Prints” function works on the art site. People who submit art to most categories can choose to have them made into prints, though the process is a bit iffy and non-subscribers don’t get enough of a “cut” from the fees to make a difference.

Also, they are actually 5-watt bulbs. I was worried because the bulb holder is actually a 4-watt nightlight.

An even better discussion vis a vis the George Costanza character on Seinfeld…do you have a list of the best public restrooms in your area for uh…emergencies. I certainly do. I think its best.

After a few cookbooks are sold maybe we can do a restroom guide, just for something different. Best ones I’ve even seen were in Manhattan, during the eighties (if you could find one, that is). Gallaghers (sp) Steak House…this little plastic toilet seat cover just automatically covered the seat. Our daughter must have gone in there three or four times just to check it out.

Over until you have children then under. It’s harder for a toddler to do as much damage if the paper comes off “under.” They can still make a mess but there’s more time to catch them in the act.

re: #123 Sharmuta

Sorry no links. My experiments are off the charts of what most people are doing. Give me a couple more weeks of experimenting and I’ll write some stuff up once I feel I know what I’m doing.
It involves a nebulizer and a 5 gallon bucket. Approximate cost is about $40 per bucket but I can fit 15 strawberries or 10 basil plants or 5 tomatoes in one bucket. A few grow lights can be done cheaply $30 should cover 10 buckets. Average wattage per bucket is about 7 watts per bucket so 10 buckets would be the approximate equivalent to leaving a light bulb on. Maybe a few buck per month.
Maintenance is easy, change buckets once a week. Takes about 20 minutes to maintain the whole lot. It beats the hell out of mandatory daily watering.

I’ve been looking into it. Most aeroponics folks are using spray systems which involve complicated spray systems with complicated plumbing, potential leaks, clogging sprayers and noisy pumps. Amazon has been essential in Afghanistan. I have ordered everything from light bulbs and classification folders (six panel, two-prong, heavy card stock!) to laptops (including a MacBook Pro, Woot!) and a tenth edition Knight’s Modern Seamanship (1941), which I am confident is the only copy between here and Kiev.

When I can’t even hit google (an indispensable research tool) from my work machine, I can still get Amazon on my *cell phone*. Yes, in Afghanistan. Their mobile site is a joy to use.

Just the same, I don’t think I’ll be ordering groceries yet.

I’ve ordered kitchen accessories through Amazon but I haven’t tried food yet. I had my eye on various coffees, spices and makes of olive oil that I can’t get at the store, but I was waiting for some disposable income before giving it a shot.

I have a dream that someday I’ll be able to order locally grown food over the internet and get it delivered to my door for a good price… If I was 0bie that’s where I’d invest the stimulus money.

My Commandments for a Cooler America:

Thou shalt have a modern nuclear power grid, oil shale extraction, and freedom from foreign oil.

Thou shalt have really big rockets to go to the Moon and asteroids and Mars, because it would be awesome.

Thou shalt have fresh groceries delivered to thy door with mouse clicks…

I could think of more…

I’ve been looking into it. Most aeroponics folks are using spray systems which involve complicated spray systems with complicated plumbing, potential leaks, clogging sprayers and noisy pumps. There aren’t many people using nebulizers, which makes me suspect of what I’m doing. I figure other people have tried this and found out it doesn’t work for some reason. If it is this easy why isn’t everybody doing it?

Maybe people follow the herd rather than try something different. Is using nebulizers more labor-intensive? Maybe people figure they can set up the plumbing stuff then sit back and not do a lot. /Keep in mind that I know nothing about hydroponics.

Listen up lizards. As much as I’m impressed with these prices you need to be careful. I went back to look at the Charmin after looking up my Innova dog food (which was selling in the high forties for thirty pounds) and under my Charmin “favorites” was some Innova that is selling for over $56.00 for 33 pounds. Just search each thing on its own.

Thanks, Charles. I’ve been thinking about checking that out for months. I’m Prime, so practically everything else I buy comes through Amazon, shipping free. Including the 50-lb. car battery I got at a steep discount when mine went dead this winter. Free shipping on something that weighs more than my niece! And no getting a hot shot and driving to the nearest Sears (45 minutes away) only to be sold whatever battery brand they happen to be pushing at whatever price they feel like charging.

I guess you could say I love Amazon. Bought all my computers and accessories there, including an Iomega external drive that started showing signs of fritzing out the day before the 30-day Amazon guarantee ran out. Placed a return + replacement request and in five minutes I had a reply telling me no problem, they sent me a new one by overnight shipping (free) and I have thirty days to futz around with getting the stuff off the old one before I have to send it back.

I’ve never had a bad experience with them. Books, clothes, shoes, Kindle books for iPhone, batteries, replacement parts for my Braun shaver, a French press for coffee, Crocs, DVDs, DVD players, overseas items like books in German etc., gifts for others, MP3 downloads, dietary supplements, Dr. Bronner’s 18-in-1 Hemp Castile Peppermint Soap (still sporting the famous label), stuff for my dog…

So, groceries now. Maybe I won’t run out of staples so often if I can order in peace without rushing to get out of the penumbra of sixties muzak that shadows me at the local independent grocer’s, where they charge like four bucks for a 100-count pack of Splenda.

With the money I save I can drive to Whole Foods for real cheese and fresh produce.

Good on you for giving me the prod!

Maybe the supply companies make more money off the other stuff. I’m guessing that they would not want to push a product that cut into their bottom line. Lots of people don’t put their own system together or plan a lot - they go to someone and buy what they see, without researching. They don’t for example think of going to Salvation Army or some such to pick up used nebulizers.

Thinking of the money angle - occupational hazard.

20 MPG for 5.8 is fantastic.

Only time I rebuilt a carb was for a 1981 Honda Civic. Didn’t cost much and it took a couple of hours. Now I have a 2001 German car and I only do the basics since everything else requires special tools and such.

re: #244 Catttt

We’d go to the Sears, which was a small office with catalogs and a clerk, to shop the catalog. I used to cut up our old catalogs up for paper dolls, but no one ever had any feet.

We had Sears and Wards but no little outlet catalog store, just the books in the mail. Those clothes would look so cute but they mostly turned out to be terrible fabric. I like to touch that cloth. Heh.

We had the same paper dolls. LOL

The one on the left is either amped up on something, or reacting to something shocking.

I’m just looking at the angle and wondering if it’s possible from that viewpoint turn your eyeballs so far to the right that an observer would not see even a trace of iris/pupil. Just never seen a photo like that before. I think she’s wearing some kind of weird zombie contacts for effect. It worked. I nearly jumped out of my skin when I saw it.

We received one as a gift but haven’t used it often. You have to clear the floor before running it. With the regular vacuum, I can just push stuff out of the way and then push it back. Too much clutter around here.

Are those prices in American dollars? A 32-pack of (12-ounce) Cokes with standard shipping is $34.28. For that amount, I can get five 24-packs at Wal-Mart. I found the same thing with several other products I checked.

Oh well, I guess one man’s “amazingly economical” is another man’s “absurdly expensive”!

DAB is selling that product - I don’t buy from DAB. The prices are not that good, and they charge for shipping. I buy stuff that is Amazon Prime (free shipping) or get stuff that’s a good buy with reasonable shipping.

267 Athos  Wed, Apr 22, 2009 12:18:01am

Was this a secret?

Not to me, I’ve been buying K-cups Coffee and Tea on a subscription from Amazon for the last 6 months…..and yes, I’ve been a Prime Member for the last 3 years.

The only thing that will kill this - is the renewed interest to tax eCommerce sales based on the recipient’s home address. Sorry, I’m enjoying the at least 9.25% discount I get from not having to pay my local sales tax on my Amazon purchaes.

Over. If you’ve ever bought a roll with a pattern printed on it, you wouldn’t have to ask.

269 SixDegrees  Wed, Apr 22, 2009 1:43:17am

I’ve ordered unusual items from Amazon in the past. They’re great when you need preserved lemons or prickly pear jelly, and often it’s the only place I can find such things.

But if I can find something locally, I have a strong preference for putting my dollars into local hands whenever possible. Prices at Amazon for run-of-the-mill items would have to be stunningly good to overcome this preference. And I’d have to work out how much I would have to purchase to justify that eighty bucks a year Amazon charges to “eliminate” shipping.

Or if I lived somewhere far from shopping, it would make all kinds of sense. But I’ve got hundreds of stores, specialty and general, within less than ten miles. Well, mostly within five miles, actually.

But for the oddball items you can’t get unless you live in New York Or Marrakesh, Amazon’s great.

To top it off those beans are more than likely shipped from another country which does not have the strict pesticide laws the US has. So enjoy!

I looked into this when they began offering groceries, but their limited options make it much less useful for me. I mean, they sell coffee, but no Folgers or Maxwell House?

Every time I went looking for something they seemed to have some “green,” unknown brand-alternative and I’m not clear why they don’t have both options.

I absolutely love Amazon for books, games and many other household items. I use their timed-delivery for some staple products (toothpaste and stuff) and get 15% off for the “subscription” that I can delay or cancel at any time!

I do agree you need to be careful though - not all items are a lot less here, and some are way overpriced from what you can get at the local grocery on their sales (cereal comes to mind).

BUT, it is always my go-to source before going out shopping for any big ticket item and is my comparison shopping source to get ratings and reviews.

Right. If you’re careful you can save, plus you get the straght to the door free delivery, and without paying the yearly Prime fee. If you order $25 or more from Amazon and the items qualify (and nearly all their food items do), shipping is free, though it’s about 5 days instead of two.

Here’s what I did last night. I got these items below with a total cost of $73.82 and no shipping. Then I entered the code that you find on the site and save $25. This brings it to $48.82! That’s like getting the Izze juice FREE plus an extra $2 off. I know you can find Rice-a-Roni on sale for $1 a box at the store, and this is $17.77 for 12, but with the $25 off, it way more than makes up for it.

“Rice a Roni Original Long Grain & Wild Rice, 4.3-Ounce Boxes (Pack of 12)”
Grocery; $17.77

“Quaker Instant Oatmeal Express Baked Apple, 1.9-Ounce Boxes (Pack of 12)”
Grocery; $15.80

“IZZE Fortified Sparkling Juice, Pomegranate, 8.4-Ounce Cans (Pack of 24)”
Grocery; $23.00

“Stacy’s Pita Chips, Simply Naked, 1.5-Ounce Bag (Pack of 24)”
Grocery; $17.25

I support my local growers (including using my own garden) at the farmer’s market, and buy the bulk of our groceries in my own town, so I know what you’re saying.

The Amazon deals can be sent to AK and HI. This is from the information on Super Saver Shipping (free when you order qualifying $25 worth) “Applies to U.S. delivery addresses in the 50 states only, including Alaska and Hawaii. Geographic shipping restrictions may apply to particular products; for example, some Tools & Hardware items may not be shipped to Alaska and Hawaii using FREE Super Saver Shipping.
