Iranian state-run news agency Press TV ran a story on its website this week praising the unveiling of an Iranian-made drone, that according to the Israeli daily Maariv bears a striking resemblance to an earlier photo taken in Israel of an Israeli-made drone.

Some good economic news for a change:

Mortgage applications up 5.3% last week: MBA

CHICAGO (MarketWatch) -- Mortgage applications rose a seasonally adjusted 5.3% last week, compared with the week before, due to an uptick in refinance applications, the Mortgage Bankers Association reported on Wednesday.

Applications were up 76.9% for the week ended April 17, compared with the same week in 2008, the MBA said. The weekly MBA survey covers about half of all U.S. retail residential mortgage applications.

Refinance applications were up an unadjusted 7.7% last week, compared with the week before. Applications for mortgages to purchase a home were down a seasonally adjusted 4.2%, compared with the week before.
The four-week moving average for all mortgages was up 0.3%.
The share of applications for refinance mortgages was 79.7% of total applications, up from 77.8% the previous week. The share of adjustable-rate mortgages was 1.4% of all applications last week, down slightly from 1.5% the previous week.

I think the 76.9% increase quoted in the second paragraph might by a typo on their part. But be that as it may, there is starting to be some solid indications that the real estate market is starting to firm a bit.

The Dow is up abut 44 points at the moment.

The Iranians do have working centrifuges. Roughly 7,000 of them. It's a mix of IR-1 and IR-2 centrifuges, both of which are based on Pakistani designs (P1, P2). It's simply a matter of time for Iran to gather sufficient materials to make a nuclear weapon.

OK, this is good, tells you much about this administration.

Stopping Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons is an imperative for the United States, which is taking a more active role in pursuing that goal, US Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton said Wednesday.

Testifying before the Foreign Affairs Committee in the House of Representatives, Clinton cited Iran and its nuclear program among the administration's highest priorities.

"We are deploying new approaches to the threat posed by Iran, and we're doing so with our eyes wide open and with no illusions," she said.

Sounds good right?

Now the punchline.

"We know the imperative of preventing Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons," she added. "After years during which the United States basically sat on the sidelines, we are now a full partner" in international talks on Iran.

[Link: www.jpost.com...]

Even if this isn't viable, there are very serious problems with nukes in such close proximity as these two enemies. There is NO time for analysis in the event of something that looks like a nuclear attack. Your only option is to launch your own countermeasures immediately.

If it turns out that whatever set the signal off was a flock of birds flying into a radar dish, now you've got a real damn problem.

Nuclear confrontation tends toward nervous, itchy trigger fingers. When you're only a few miles apart, things can go very, very wrong very, very quickly indeed.

My fiance is a systems engineer with a long list of certifications and 15 years experience under his belt, and he's been out of work for a year and a half. We can't buy an engagement ring until he's back to work, and it's breaking his heart. Mine too.

I'll be glad when the economy starts to rebound, is this is a glimmer of hope perhaps that things are starting to turn around?

Skip the ring.//

OT: Gay progressive Muslim antisemitism at HuffPo....
Poor Israel? Sure, and I am Barack Obama!

I write from Geneva, where I was invited to speak at the UN "Durban II" conference on racism and have just today been spat at by two Israelis.
....
Later, two Israeli delegates spat at me. Surprisingly, an erudite Canadian professor and member of Parliament threw around a baffling and hard-to-explain term: "genocidal anti-Semitism". Only he knows what he means, I certainly do not!
Still later as the Iranian president walked into his press conference, clueless, young (all White by the way) UN workers stood and hissed, accusing him of "racism" (a term problematically applied in this case).
Today for the first time I was witness to the extent of power the pro-Israel , anti-Iran and anti-Palestinian lobbies wield, even here in Geneva.
....
Israel and its many lobbies in majority Caucasian countries (and sometimes mine like India) are loud enough to drown out the rhetoric of the humble former mayor of Tehran.
I write, in a hurry from Geneva where I shall now go and torment myself at a Shoa remembrance being turned into an Iran hate-fest.

Progressive!

No, I wasn't trying to scare you, sorry, I'm just stating facts. I'm a bit more pragmatic about certain things. And I am 56 years old, probably a lot older than your boyfriend.

I don't see real estate as being a big indicator or anything more than people who have money, those who haven't taken a big hit, are buying up stuff cheap, I know, I did it in the early 80's myself.

Bottom line is, this is not any indication that anything has changed for the common, everyday folk.

Two different issues at play here. Employment is a lagging indicator, usually the market turns up or down about 6 months or so before you see an appreciable change in the employment numbers.

Presuming that Obama, Geithner and company to not further damage the economy, I think we are stabilizing, although unemployment numbers are likely to keep going up for a few months yet. A key will be if we get some limitations put on the destructive short selling that has been going on.

Right now it is still a shooting gallery in the market due to unfettered short selling, and the big money is going to stand on the sidelines until that gets taken care of.

So, I think the economy is starting to stabilize. What we then willhave to deal with is hyper inflation due to the trillions that have been pumped into the banking system and the velocity of money (how fast it changes hands) has slowed down about 40% but will speed up again.

I think we should see a noticable upturn late this year yet.

Speaking of irony, I'm looking at an ad on your website that is promoting Intelligent Design.

The ads are placed based on keywords. ID and related terms get mentioned here a lot. The ad filter sees a whole bunch of those terms, and (stupidly) decides that quantity equals actual interest.

It's unlikely the ID'ers are getting much bang for their advertising dollar.

Did you see, the Perots via their Hillwood Venture do not have "Victory" any longer, the German investor group US Treuhand forced them to give up their $100,000,000.00 ownership stake in the venture down town Dallas around the America Air Lines Center (center belongs to tax payers)

They will still operate the venture, but no ownership, banks had to re-do the loans.

This will dry up the Perots as land buyers in the Dallas area, and they were no. one in that, thus commerical land will have to get re-priced,
the loans on existing land deals will be suspect.

like that
Now "Victory" belongs to the Germans.

Nope had not heard that but thanks for the heads up.

The connection between the real estate prices and the average person on the street is this:

1. Many people have their retirement savings in the market and to the extent that a firming of real estate prices has a positive impact on the market, that helps those investors.

2. You need to have a firming of real estate prices and have the inventory of empty homes reduced before demand for new construction can significantly improve. That is important cause of the many folks who work in the trades and therefore their incomes are affected by the demand for new construction.

The ring's just an accessory. But I do understand the pride issue involved here. Mr. faith insisted on buying me more ring than I would have asked for, more than he could really afford right then, because he knew I would not allow him to "upgrade" it later on. I'd have been okay with an imitation stone and gold plated metal. Hell, if he'd given me a twist-tie to wrap around my finger, that's what I'd be wearing to this day.

The Arab/Islamic World:

Scene one:

Kuwaiti candidate urges ties with Israel

"Israel is a reality and has international influence... Kuwait would benefit from Israel's influence if we establish relations," said Saleh Bahman, who is running as an independent.

He also said relations between Kuwait and Israel would improve the oil-rich country's standing in the West.

Scene Two:

Salah Bahman, an independent candidate for the Kuwaiti parliament, has dropped out of the race a day after he called for full normalization of relations between Israel and Kuwait, igniting a storm of controversy in the Persian gulf state.

In a radio interview Wednesday, Bahman backtracked on his previous statement before announcing his withdrawal from the race.

This is the reality the media ignores.

They're always posturing, it's a totalitarian disease.

I think it's a little more than that. Ajad really, really needs something to distract the populace from Iran's super crappy financial state. The price of oil is around half of what he needs to balance Iran's budget, much less support every anti-semitic nutjob running loose in the world. There's an election coming up this summer. An attack on Iran would really help rally the Iranians behind him.

I just wear a wedding band--which is absolutely perfect, we got it from an adorable little Jewish goldsmith in Berkeley. My theory is that for our tenth anniversary or something, I'll make him get me a band to match with a nice ruby or something. (My husband is phobic about buying diamonds.)

Of course, a friend offered me the diamond from her late marriage. (The marriage died, not the husband.) It was a family stone, though, and I convinced her to give it to her brother-in-law.
