This is important :

GM reportedly to miss $1 bln debt payment due June 1

SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- General Motors Corp., struggling to restructure itself amid increasing odds of a bankruptcy filing, said it plans to skip a $1 billion debt payment due June 1, according to a Wall Street Journal report on Wednesday.
GM's finance chief Ray Young told reporters at a Chinese auto industry summit in Detroit the beleaguered automaker is relying on a debt-for-equity exchange or court protection to lower its $28 billion in debt.
He said bankruptcy is "probable," though GM, with the full backing of the U.S. government, will right the ship "in court or out of court," the Journal reported.
GM spokeswoman Renee Rashid-Merem said the company is working aggressively to reach a deal with bondholders, which she said is an "essential element" of the restructuring efforts.

This is why the market took a nose dive late in the afternoon. When you miss a debt service payment, you by definition are bankrupt. The only question left at this point is how much more public money will we pump into this entity in the meantime.

Word is also that GM will close down for 9 weeks (they are denying it publicly cause they have to first inform their collective bargaining units as required by contract) in order to get rid of backlogged inventory.

It's the end of an era. Hopefully it will be the birth of a stronger car maker, but in any event this has to happen.

The IMF is looking for some money:
I.M.F. Puts Bank Losses From Global Financial Crisis at $4.1 Trillion

WASHINGTON — As finance ministers gather here this weekend for meetings of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank, they will focus on two eye-popping numbers: $4.1 trillion, the fund’s latest projected losses from the global economic crisis, and $1.1 trillion to help fix it.

Guess who they blame for this?

Of that amount, $2.7 trillion is from loans and assets originating in the United States, the fund said. That estimate is up from $2.2
trillion in the fund’s interim report in January, and $1.4 trillion last October.

Notice they don't care who the other side of the transactions were with.

Guess who they think should come up with most of the $1.1 trillion they want to keep giving handouts?

Analysts said the $1.1 trillion sum assumed huge contributions by the United States, China and other countries, which may or may not come through. It also counts some contributions more than once, and it counts some in the form of a synthetic I.M.F. currency that is not hard cash.

The USA pretty much controls the world market for helium. Most of it is refined from extreme helium-rich natural gas from the Hugoton Kansas area and fields in Texas, and Oklahoma. Helium is a necessary material for all sorts of high tech industry and scientific research. You need it to make rocket fuel. You need it in supersonic wind tunnels, superconductor research, growing silicon crystals.

Could be a strategic advantage. Just a thought.

Led Pengwin

A penguin had to take his car for engine repair.

The mechanic told the penguin to leave his car with him for about two hours, to find out whats wrong.

The penguin goes across the street to a grocery store, climbs into a freezer and ate vanilla ice cream.

When the two hours was up the penguin went back to the garage to find out what happened to his car.

When the penguin entered the garage, the mechanic looked at him and said, "Looks like you blew a seal."

The penguin replied, "NO way, thats vanilla ice-cream!"

Air penguins. Can air manatees be far behind? And air sharks? C'mon, you gotta have air sharks.

Seriously, though, devices like this could be extremely useful as remote-controlled observation platforms for military use. Totally silent in operation, with low power consumption allowing for long duration on station. I expect that they'd have trouble coping with strong winds, though.

Closeted penguins always have a ready excuse like that. "Oh, it's just vanilla ice cream!" or "The puffin and I were just practicing wrestling moves." It's kinda sad, really.

Very cool, beautiful and graceful too.
Sort of like Cultural Evolution for penguins.
Man can't fly, can't swim very well, can't run very fast, but he can invent planes that fly faster than the fastest bird, build boats and submarines that rule the oceans, and make cars that make road kill out of too-slow-animals.
Now we have given 'flight' to a flightless bird.
