During the past few decades, modern technology, with radio, TV, air travel, and satellites, has woven a network of communication which puts each part of the world in to almost instant contact with all the other parts. Yet, in spite of this world-wide system of linkages, there is, at this very moment, a general feeling that communication is breaking down everywhere, on an unparalleled scale...

How depressing.

Happy Debt Day: Government to 'Run Out' of Cash Sunday, Earliest Ever

Debt Day comes early this year. Unfortunately, it's nothing to celebrate.

The symbolic "holiday," which falls on Sunday, marks the point in the fiscal year when government spending exceeds revenue.

In other words, the government will stop making money and start borrowing on Sunday.

And it's coming earlier than ever, according to House Minority Leader John Boehner, who's pointing to Debt Day as yet another symptom of a government he says is spending too much, borrowing too much and taxing too much. Last year's Debt Day fell more than three months later, on Aug. 5.

"All the revenue for this fiscal year will be spent as of Sunday," Boehner, R-Ohio, said. With the fiscal year ending Sept. 30, he said, "everything that happens after Sunday through ... the balance of this fiscal year is going to have to be borrowed from our kids and grandkids."

/it'll probably hit in January when they pass the TOTUS budget fiasco

For many years, Dad commuted with a neighbor, 50+ miles each way. They invented a game, to keep them occupied for the drive. The theory was, if you drove over 100 miles a day, you were a good driver. And, as such, you got one, just one, bazooka shot a day, to take out the worst driver, that you saw., and eventually, only good drivers would be left. The difficulty, was picking out WHICH driver was the worst! I still play this, today. Today's winner was a dark blue Chevy Nova, BTW!

I am a small town boy in a sorta, kinda way. A little complicated mind you, but the principle applies. Got my drivers license in small town and hated driving in big cities. Worst experience I ever had was when some moron decided in rush hour, on a city street (3 lanes each way) that he HAD to get onto the on ramp to the major highway NOW!1!1!1! Almost took off the front end of my compact that had me, my mother, and wife at the time. My mother heard my full repertoire of military language reserved for proper idiots. Best part was she didn't chastise me one bit.

And Good Times was a spin-off from Maude

Norman Lear is probably the TV series spin-off king and he had a lot of hits doing it.

All In The Family spun off Maude, The Jeffersons, and Archie Bunker's Place. Maude spun off Good Times and Diff'rent Strokes spun off The Facts of Life.

While I don't particularly agree with Lear's liberalism (and the ways he brought it into his series at times), he produced some of the best shows of the 70s and 80s.

I think JWBooth's death was intentional-he couldn't be allowed to talk. I'm not usually a conspiracy theorist, but Abe Lincoln's assasination led to a very DIFFERENT 'Reconstruction' from what he had planned. The 'Reconstruction' that came about after his death, led to a very divided and bitter country-Lincolns' plans wouldn't have.

I had the great fortune/ misfortune to witness a driver cut across 6 lanes of an LA freeway to make his exit. In the process, he cut off many cars and a big rig, fully loaded. The rig jackknifed (overturned) to avoid hitting the passenger vehicle. I was able to get the passenger car's license, called it in to the CHP (Ca. Highway Patrol). The driver of the rig was not hurt. The driver of the car was deemed responsible for the accident. The rig driver sent me a thank you card. Stupid drivers seem to think a truck handles like a car. That, or they are just more important...

Could have been a video gamer who thought that - according to AI rules - the truck is literally driving on a rail and will not budge to a small car collision.

Hell yeah. One friend tried it for a few months before quitting. I have a couple of other friends that are truck drivers. They try to tell me stories about how hard it is. I believe them without a qualm. I have spent a shit load of time on the road in two different jobs just driving cars. I am so glad that I don't drive a car at the moment. Still have my license but sometimes the traffic terrifies me.

re: #134 Gus 802

Ok, you forced me :-)

From the Glenn Beck 912 Project forum (which is promoted and part of the Glenn Beck empire), from the thread titled Swine Flu?

[...]IF ONE PERSON IN MY FAMILY DIES FROM THIS FLU I WILL HOLD OUR GOVERMENT RESPONSIBLE! ALL OF THEM!

-

So this strain has Swine, bird and human flu. My question is, who is messing around? This has to be genetically altared. I do not believe for a second this could mutate with three different strands. I believe they are doing this in hopes of a massive breakout. That way they can fast track the "universal healthcare". If millions become sick, they would be forced to give treatment on a large scale. Who knows what else could be in this shot. Our own government is trying to kill us.

-

OK, there are a few weird things going on here...

3 missing vials of swine flu from the Army Lab at Fort Detrick, MD. and the fact that CNN reports this story on their website and NEVER ONCE mentions the words "swine flue" in the article! Why is that? Are they trying to cover something up?

Roger...Roger...I think we found the source of one of the ingredients in our little pandemic cocktail! [...]

-

[...]Today on a positive note swine flu was found in the two states of the union that most people would not mind vanishing off the face of the earth. The ugly part is that due to lax rules at the border it has been allowed across our border. The bad part is it will probably spread across the rest of the country eventually giving Obama the ability to declare Marshall law. [...]

-

Has any one noticed the Media is not talking much about this now.
Normally if 1 person any where in the world die from something like this,
they report and re-report and re-report
Bird Pig and Human viruses mixed. this is a lab creation People.
Wake UP!

-

[...] Sense Porkulus Pigamus spewed change we can believe in I think he should be wide open to any and all pork jokes. Now monkey jokes I could understand

-

Here we go! strap it on tight this may be the ride of our lives. I like how there are 3 strains of flu swine , avian , and human. the cdc has never seen anything like this b4. seems like there is something to this. can you imagine 5 years from know and looking back ,and this is how it all started. this seems more like a bio weapon then just some mutation. we are going to look back and remember these cases popping up here and there then wham its on your doorstep.

-

Quarantines on the horizon? Depy. of Homeland Security? They said "Never let a crisis go to waste."

-

Remember folks, it is fear that is running this country. I would ask you all, what would happen if this so called "pandemic" where to occur? Come on think about it.
Under the threat of a national epidemic, who would take power? What agency could possibly take away every right you have ever had? Quarantines would just be the beginning.

FEMA!

-

I find this just so ironically funny, how absolutely perfect would it be if Nancy Pelosi gets the Swine Flu? It would be funny on so many levels. First, because she is in fact, the Biggest "SWINE" in the United States and Second, she just absolutely adores Illegal Immigrants from Mexico and told them that they were the Most Patriotic people in America, so I would just find it hysterically funny if she were one of the victims of this new plague. NO ONE WOULD DESERVE IT MORE.

-

The timing of this influenza outbreak makes me wonder if this is man-made. Currently the democrats are trying to Fast Track the health care bill. This would allow them to put the bill to a vote with no debate and only need 51 yea votes to pass and become law. Maybe i'm just cynical, but our government hasn't given me a reason to trust them either. These are the people who wrecked our economy, dropped the charges against the USS Cole bombers, released top secret info on interrogations,ect.ect...

-

I have been watching this story develop and I thought oh well, just another virus mostly in Mexico and a dozen cases in California and Teaxs. But the CDC just confirmed at least eight cases in New York and now two cases in Kansas. From what I understand swine flu is normally tranfered from pig to human. This virus is a combination of four differnet viruses and it seems fishy to me that its in the southwest, midwest and now the northeast spreading from human to human. I am not an alarmist but this doesn't seem natural to me and there is a possibility this is man made virus or crisis which will let FEMA take control. Pet the pig and fear the FEMA

-

First a sudden international economic crisis and now a flu that even the average person knows is highly unlikely to occur naturally. Hope everyone stocked up on food and can hunker down. The government can do anything it wants in the name of public safety from a pandemic.

-

Any illegals coming across the border with the flu is probably music to Obama's ears. This will help him to pass nationalized healthcare immediately because it is a "Crisis." Like all the rest of his bills. And while they are treating all of the illegals, they can get their citizenship paperwork done at the same time. Two fer one.

-

I also find it strange that the new flu just happened to combine three different strains. Of course the government will watch the spread of it rather than really try to stop it. After all, it would step on too many toes to enact border controls or travel restrictions or any other serious measure.

-

I'm no Biologist, but I cannot see how this can possibly be a normal mutation if it contains swine, bird, and human attack mechanisms. Airborne, so now we watch the low pressure systems and weather patterns coming out of The Great Lone Star State, and pray.

-

It is a very interesting question to ask where this came from. It is highly unlikely that a flu containing strains of avian, bird, and human would just appear in the wild. The question is what form of biological terrorism did this come from?

And so on... I'm not cherry picking either, just going through the first 3 pages and pulling out quotes. There are a couple of people over there trying to put some rationality into the discussion, but they are a minority. All the quotes I lifted had positive ratings.

Remember, this is from the official Glenn Beck 912 forum. Perhaps moderators will delete those threads come Monday, but I doubt it.

Does anyone still doubt that Glenn Beck is just Ron Paul with a smiley face?

The first time I saw the video for Orinoco Flow, I misread the title. Later, when I was asking for help finding it in a record store, I asked if they had an album with the song "Okatu No Kavango".

No one could make heads or tails of that title, obviously.

When she was popular I didn't even need an album since she got a lot of air play on the radio stations I would listen to.

And half of these people are probably anti-vaxxers.

First a sudden international economic crisis and now a flu that even the average person knows is highly unlikely to occur naturally. Hope everyone stocked up on food and can hunker down. The government can do anything it wants in the name of public safety from a pandemic.

Yep, it's all planned. The government planned the economic crisis; 911; the Swine Flu; your Comcast bill; Kosovo; UFOs; and Pearl Harbor. In fact they even planned the Lincoln assassination.

The Swine Flu is actually non-fatal. It can be fatal if you have lowered resistance from other ongoing diseases. However, it is no way death sentence if one catches the Swine Flu -- it's not a plague by any means.

Limited pandemic at the most.

Just because he's paranoid, does it mean WE don't have enemies? The USA is hated around the world-for being powerfull, FREE, and trying to spread sanity in a mad world. We are in trouble right NOW, because our leader/leaders don't understand this-they wear rose quartz glasses. I'm considering buying a generator, a lot more canned goods, etc...it looks that bad to me. Try reading these reviews, and consider the book for reading-its called "1 second After". It doesn't have to be NK or Iran doing this-with all the technology BJClinton supplied China, does this sound unlikely?

The Canadian Public Health Agency had issued a travel health notice, saying, "The Public Health Agency of Canada is tracking clusters of severe respiratory illness with deaths in Mexico."

and

(CNN) -- Twenty-two students and three teachers in New Zealand, who returned from a three-week-long language trip to Mexico, may have been infected with the swine flu virus, officials said Sunday. The suspected infections in New Zealand follow reports that a deadly new strain of the virus cropped up in more places in the United States and Mexico on Saturday.

The World Health Organization is calling the virus "a public health emergency of international concern."

The 25 students and teachers at Auckland's Rangitoto College returned to New Zealand via Los Angeles

My daughter is supposed to go on a school trip to Los Angeles next weekend. I'm leaning towards cancelling it.

There have to be tons of cases among hispanic populations in LA if that college group from New Zealand and the businessman from KS caught the flu in Mexico.

I'm sure there are tons of cases among hispanics here in the Las Vegas area too, since spring break was Apr 6-10, and lots of families go to Mexico on school breaks from here.

"Cats" is the longest-running show on Broadway to date. The show romanticizes and shrouds in mystery the lives and habits of America's most popular pet. Yet, even with the lively dancing and popular songs, "Cats" doesn't seem to capture the true-to-life behavior of our feline companions. Below is a list of what "Cats" would have to do to more accurately portray the true
essence of cats.

* Audience members would enter the auditorium only to find their seats had been clawed and covered with fur.

* The antagonist in the show would be a giant vacuum cleaner.

* Sometimes the cast would perform, but sometimes not -- depending on their mood.

* Performers would leap off the stage and run up the aisles at the recorded sound of a can opener in the lobby.

* When certain audience members opened their playbills, a cast member would attempt to lay down on it.

* In the middle of a performance various cast members would curl up and go to sleep, even in the middle of a song.

* For no apparent reason, cast members would randomly run to the lobby, and then back to the stage at top speed. They would then continue as if nothing had happened.

* A special audience member would find a headless bird in his/her seat after the intermission.

* Snack bar employees would constantly be reprimanding cast members for walking on the counter.

* Open the stall door and guess who is drinking from the toilet.

* Part of the performance would include the cast climbing and shredding the theater curtains.

* The stage would be stained from someone coughing up a hairball and then eating it.

* Performers would find sand in the lobby ashtrays and -- well, we don't have to draw a picture here, do we?

* The show would need to be stopped several times to allow cast members to "bathe" themselves.

* Most of the final act would consist of the cast just staring at the audience.

* The big finale would feature a giant ball of yarn, feathers on a pole, and stray strands of dental floss.

* Theater patrons waiting outside the stage door after performances would get their legs rubbed, if they were lucky.

* Cast members would never cash their paychecks, just play with them.

Yikes!
As I indicated last week, my own PCCT (Paranoid Commercial Conspiracy Theory) holds that the Soros labs have created a new virus that selectively attacks the reasoning centers of conservative brains, thereby spreading insanity and paranoia on the political right.

We might all be crazy by this time next week, praising the renowned prophet Glenn Beck, screeching about the Nirth Certifikat, hoarding canned goods and 9mm ammo, and hanging breathlessly on every word of Alex Jones's latest news release.

I'm wondering if the European strain managed to mix in with the strain that causes fascism.

I have tried, but most of my games end in disaster. My problem is that I want to be too realistic, and most systems don't even come close. I have been lucky though in the past decade. I have found two GM's that are fantastic story tellers. For them the most important part is the quest, rather then the rules.

When GM'ng, you must remember that you are working in 'All God' mode, and allow for intervention (possibly by a deity, another party with clerics, etc.). But, sometimes a character gets killed and there's no way to change it. That's when you take the player separately, and cast a new character to 'hopefully' join the p[arty...

Landlord demands dead victim’s late rent, fees

Mother gets letter imposing penalty for ‘early termination’
BY DENEEN SMITH
dsmith@kenoshanews.com

When she opened the letter from her dead son’s former landlord this week, Danelle Eckert thought there had to be some mistake.

The letter, addressed to Eckert and to the estate of her son, Colin Byars, was demanding March and April rent, late fees and an “early termination fee” because he had left his apartment before the end of his lease. Byars, a 24-year-old teacher, was killed Feb. 21 when he was punched in the head on a Kenosha street.

“I thought they must not understand that Colin was killed. But no, they understood completely,” Eckert said.

She said the apartment’s property manager told her that they knew Byars had been killed. But the woman told Eckert the management company had been advised by their legal representative that they should go after the rent and fees.

And half of these people are probably anti-vaxxers.

Hard to say, but the overwrought panic being displayed in the headlines certainly suggest that you're right. I can't help but remember the dreaded Bird Flu of just a few years ago, that was supposed to wipe out everything with feathers in North America, then jump to humans and do us in as well, if you believed the reports.

So far, there have been roughly 100 confirmed deaths (a number which itself may be overblown) yet no word on how many actual cases are involved; I'd guess tens of thousands, at least, given the population density of Mexico City and their incredibly stupid belief that wearing painter's masks will somehow prevent infection.

We'll know more when cooler heads prevail, but that will take a couple of weeks as evidence is marshalled and fatality rates can actually be calculated.

The news media is increasingly sensationalistic and not disposed to let facts get in the way of a good panic. I'm taking everything they say with a grain of salt.

On the positive side, it's nice to see that world health organizations are able to so quickly identify and track outbreaks of infectious disease.

5 things you may not know about Bea Arthur tho some are already mentioned upthread.
1. Bea Arthur Was a Marine
Before World War II, Bea was a medical technician. She volunteered to join the US Marine Corps, becoming one of its first female recruits.

2. Bea Arthur Got Her Start in Comedy by Being a Lounge Singer
In an interview, Bea said that when she got up on stage to sign a torch song, the audience laughed at her because of her deep voice and height. The nightclub manager told her that she was in the wrong business being a lounge singer, and that she should be doing comedy instead.

3. Bea Arthur Never Had a Star on the Walk of Fame
Bea was inducted into the Television Hall of Fame a few months ago, but she never had a star in the Hollywood Walk of Fame. A travesty!

She may have a shot yet, you can nominate someone for a Walk of Fame Star, but you'd have to wait five years first for a posthumous nomination.

4. Bea Arthur was in The Star Wars Holiday Special
She sang as Ackmena, the nightshift bartender in Chalmun's Cantina in Tatooine, in the much-maligned Star Wars Holiday Special of 1978.

5. Bea Arthur was the Femputer

Watch the Hulu clip at IMDb: Death by Snu Snu

In the 2001 Futurama episode, Amazon Women in the Mood, Bea was the voice of the Femputer, the leader of the man-hatin' tribe of Amazonian women. Bea has left us, but we can still hear her sentence Fry and friends to "death by snu-snu" over and over again.

Bea Arthur, rest in peace. You shall be missed.

Yeah likely since the extent of his estate is the final paycheck he never got to pick up due to being deceased. The worst part is the early termination/breach of contract fees they are trying to extort as well. And the rent from April when the Family had already cleaned and vacated teh Apartment as of march.

From the article: According to the Wisconsin Department of Consumer Protection, the estate of a person who has died could be liable for unpaid rent, but not the person’s family.

I take that to mean that the company has the right to seek the rent due until the end of the lease.

Thanks Mandy, I rushed through making that, as evidenced by seeing some of nan's necklace and shoulder. I did fix it, but the image is at work. I'd be happy to upload the new one, and give you the link for that instead.

That'd be nice!

re: #333 MandyManners

From the article: According to the Wisconsin Department of Consumer Protection, the estate of a person who has died could be liable for unpaid rent, but not the person’s family.

I take that to mean that the company has the right to seek the rent due until the end of the lease.

Possibly. It would depend on the terms of the lease, and the precise terms of the regulations. I can't find specifics on what happens to a Wisconsin lease when the lessee dies.

However, I still would expect that they would not have a claim on rent for April. The guy was killed in February; that should have been enough notice to terminate at the end of March.

343 SixDegrees  Sun, Apr 26, 2009 6:13:48am

re: #331 lurking faith

I disagree. It is unlikely that they have any right to the April rent or the early termination fees.

The estate is liable for any outstanding debts incurred by the deceased. These debts must be settled before any disbursements are made to heirs, charities, foundations and whatnot. That's the way the law works.

The way human society works - normally - is that a debt such as this would be forgiven by the landlord, with only past due rents and possible cleaning fees deducted. However, if the lease states that the full amount of the lease term must be paid, the landlord is completely within their rights to seek payment of that amount.

Skunky, perhaps, but legal.

If the law allows the owner to collect rent until the lease is over, the company has the right.

I'm reminded of the ST:TNG episode in which an alien race insisted on adhering strictly to the contract. Shelliac?

I hope his mother doesn't wind up having to retain an estate attorney. If so, I can imagine many will be willing to do it for free.

re: #343 SixDegrees

Having been in the business and an evil landlord, I can say that in our locality your lease would likely require 30 days notice of termination. His death would not count as notice, as it would have to be in writing which would be awkward for the lessee. The executor of his estate would have to provide it, and the clock starts from when it is received. No judge in this jurisdiction would countenance early term. fees, and would most likely rake any lawyer over the coals for attempting to collect them. His mother receiving the notice is probably no more than the fact that she is likely his executor- the landlord was not asking her to pay his bills. I suspect that was a bit of exaggeration on the part of the paper.
All that said, It was beyond stupid for the company to proceed like this. They have done tens of thousands of dollars of harm to their reputation of a few measly thousand bucks at most.
Must be a corporation: they have a pseudo-body, long arms and no brain.

re: #359 MandyManners
Short answer, no. If you pay the rent through the end of the lease you can't be charged for early termination. I expect though that there was a lot more time on the lease and the mom wanted to pay through the end of March, when they vacated the premises, though I don't know when they gave notice. The landlord may very well be due April rent. Like I say, the really really stupid act on their part is to press for the extra fees from a dead man... I can not for the life of me understand why people have no sense anymore. Working for a corporation in the past though makes me think that this must be one, because people there are afraid NOT to press everything to the wall because later some moron supervisor will strut into their microcube some day and snarl, "What about this miss Binkley?! you didn't get the fees though the dates clearly show...!"

re: #376 realwest

How about Israel?

A few lizards mentioned a few months ago that the kibbutzes(?) were about as close to actual communism as one could get. This socialism evolved into a functioning capitalistic democracy, and a state more liberal in people's rights (gays, racial and religious minorities alike) than the far-right theocracies that dominate the region.

Specifically though, for my generation, "liberalism" is embodied in the Obama administration because it stands for practically everything Bush didn't (and whether that's good or bad I'll leave to you guys.) And seeing as how Bush's administration ended up collapsing in the later years taking conservatism with it, it won't fare well for the current and successive generations if the alternatives go the same way.

My parents have a studio portrait of me, taken when I was about 2 years old. I was wearing a fluffy little dress with puffed sleeves, which my parents thought was so adorable, but which I remember was just scratchy and uncomfortable.

Ever since he's been claiming that button-down shirts are itchy, I've made sure to check them all. Nothing doing. He would be happy to go through life in turtle-necks, polos, T-shirts and his wife-beaters. I tell him that I understand it but, sometimes you gotta' do what you gotta' do.

Corporate survival instinct #1:

When called out on any controversy, deny responsibility and defer to a higher authority.

The lawyers get paid to take the hits as crapweasels. Hey, when you are what you are, be proud of it!

But, the attorney is not the one dealing with this distraught mother. Nor will his/her name be smeared across the paper and over the air-waves.

I hope his mother doesn't wind up having to retain an estate attorney. If so, I can imagine many will be willing to do it for free.

I doubt there's anything an attorney could do that the mother couldn't do on her own - check the lease terms, plead with the landlord, etc.

An attorney will simply suck up more of the estate's money. I'd be certain there was a case first.

Threatening to take the story to the media (which I guess has already happened) would be my first step.

The headline on JW reads:

Madeleine Albright: "Islam is maybe the most democratic religion because there is nobody between you and God. So I do not think that is something that can be used as reason not to have Muslim democracies."

But that isn't what Albright (and I'm no fan of her) actually said but:

LAWTON: Is democracy compatible with Islamic law? Can those two things come together?

Ms. ALBRIGHT: I think so. And there are actually those who argue that Islam is more democratic than other religions because there is not a hierarchical structure and you don't necessarily need a cleric of some kind to interpret God for you. And another thing: its becoming more and more obvious that the slogan 'its for the children' leads to a decrease in service for the adults.
Take asthma - it is of course a huge problem for the families with children who suffer with that, but as resources are limited, as they always are and always will be, this means that adults who suffer with that are not getting the medication they need.

Only worth it if the attorney will work for free. I don't know how much money is involved here, but it isn't going to be much - a few months rent. An attorney will burn through that in no time.

Well that was fun while it lasted.

Robert Spencer has placed a note on his blog that he is NOT going to pro-Koln.

I think this whole thing has gotten way out of hand. I trust the Charles will respond to Spencer's public statement and set the record straight. It is ridculous that two of the most outspoken anti-Islamist blogs have been at daggers drown over the last few days.

Robert Spencer is not a closet fascist, he wants nothing to do with them.

Charles was absolutely right to be concerned that Spencer might got to pro-Koln. He is right they are fascists and no in the LGF community should have anything to do with them.

As I said the other night, Spencer is not going. And he is not going. We got played. Some fascist scum put a notice on their website and then confirmed it. We made a mistake and believed them, not Spencer. As was pointed out in earlier discussions, Spencer has ties to some folks in Serbian nationalist groups that frankly are troubling. It is not at all clear these groups have any ties to the other Euroneofascist groups.

In the landscape of people opposed to militant Islam, few in the US have done more than Spencer. I bet he gets far more credible death threats every year than Charles.

We got played and all of us, to the extent we were wrong about this owe Spencer thanks for setting us straight and a retraction of our accusations he was going. He is due an apology because we relied on pro-Koln for our information, not Robert Spencer. We need to buy the hatchet and go on. We don't have to like him. We accused him of associating with the most vile stripe of the new Europe and he has clearly spelled out he is not associated with these folks. This places him far more in our camp than the enemies'.

Regrettably, somewhere between Charles uncompromising personality and Spencer's tempestuousness and silence on the matter, this whole thing got blown way out of proportion.

Now it is done. Let us move on. Pakistan is falling, Iran is getting nukes, we need clarity and unity. This whole thing could have been put to bed by a simple email to Spencer and simple reply back.

In the future, I hope we can have civility and direct communication. LGF and Jihad Watch are on the same side and we should act accordingly.

Not just the money but, the bad publicity.

BTW, can a landlord rent out the apartment to someone else if the rent has been paid by the estate? Doesn't the estate have possession of the apartment?

Messy situation. If they're trying to enforce the terms of a lease, which may state that all payments over a certain period (usually 12 months) must be paid in full, then occupancy has nothing to do with it.

In theory, the estate retains control of the property until some resolution is reached. Normally, situations like this one result in some sort of compromise: survivors, for example, are granted a certain amount of time to clear out belongings, during which time rent will still be paid. As noted earlier, even though a lease may state that all payments for the entire lease period are due, it is typical for landlords to waive such requirements under circumstances like this one. But the details are usually reached through a negotiation between creditors and the estate.

Hiya, {nyc redneck}!
Yes - people like tobe 'taken care of', and don't look at the small print.
This 'free health care for everybody' is of course not 'free'.
Its paid for through taxation - 11% p.a. from each taxpayer. Note well - taxpayer! Those on welfare do of course not pay taxes ... but they are the biggest 'users' because they themselves do not take care of their own health.
Of course nobody should suffer unneccessarily because they can't afford medical care, but where everybody gets 'looked after', the next step is the feeling of entitlement. So some people feel entitled to get the best care as of right, without doing anything for themselves - like not drinking to such an excess that they end up in hospital ...

re: #459 MandyManners

The family cleaned out the apartment in March.

The fact is that this man had no money beyond his paycheck. If there's no money, there's nothing to negotiate.

Then it's problem solved. The estate has no money to pay the rent or lease with, so they take a loss. Debt doesn't extend to anyone other than the deceased - other family members aren't liable, and there is no way to make them pay. The only exception would be if a living person were a co-signer on the lease, in which case they would be as liable as all the deceased.

Granted, he says he is not going, but he offers NO reason why (none I can find). Can you point me to a reason he is not going.

He has not said he want's nothing to do with them. As far as I can see, he has decided in the least that it is not in his best interest to be there, but we still don't know why.

He's also still defending that Rouhs.

Here's a recommendation for everyone:
"Dial F for Frankenstein" --by Arthur C. Clarke.
This was the short story that was read by Tim Berners-Lee when he was a child. The seed was planted. He was inspired to create the world wide web.
However, the story, which first appeared in the New Yorker, I believe, is all about this "monster" we've created in its infant form--which may be, in fact, the source of that uneasy feeling that it has begun to destroy us.

I'd like you to post that comment of yours when Charles is up and awake and see how he answers it.
Especially the e-mail part.
And as you very well know this is not the first time Spencer has been "associated" with the White Nationalists or Neo-Nazi's.
Frankly, I find that post to be totally out of character for you.

I do consider myself much more aligned with LGF than Spencer. The comments from Spencer supporters are going to support Spencer. Based on bad information, we accused a guy of going to a sewer to conduct Ratus Norweigicus Symphony Orchestra.

Spencer is not perfect but we are treating him as though he is a card carrying Vlaam Belanger and he has publicly disassociated himself from pro-Koln.

re: #478 Walter L. Newton
He said that his quoting someone was being used to accuse him of being part of that. He certainly indicates he deems the association to be negative.

re: #481 lazardo

You're right. The "more money" canard is their fallback position. Of course, they live near DC where each class of 25 kids receives upwards of a quarter million dollars a year, based on the per pupil expenditures. With that kind of cash, every single kid could be sent to a far superior private school, receive a much better education and ultimately save the Gov't millions and millions of dollars. But of course, it's never really about the kids, it's always about the Libs and their petty little fiefdoms.

To be sure, quoting neonazis doesn't mean one is a neonazi.
Defending these people, in spite of facts available, is another thing.

Spencer says that because the German Interior Ministry has removed Rouhs' from their 'far right' watchlist he can't be a neonazi ...
Doesn't that reasoning somehow stick in your craw?

Yes, one can read too much into things - but these associations have been going on for some time now, its not just about this one conference.
Spencer is basically refusing to check them out himself because he has locked himself into 'feud-mode' with Charles.
(I won't speculate about the reasons for that.)

Unfortunately, the comments to his posts, for some time now, have been sliding towards neofascism as well.

Hi Aussie. I was hoping one of you Down Under folks would show up while I still remembered to mention this. I read the funniest "News of the Weird"-type of story the other day. Some well regarded public figure in Australia appealed a speeding ticket (lying about where he was in order to escape a measly 70 dollar fine) and a newspaper dogged him about his misleading testimony, ultimately resulting in them discovering that he had been a fraud all of his life. Do you happen to know this story? If you do, what field was the guy in? They mentioned that he was "highly respected" and maybe even had been awarded some National medal for his work.

These "blind" answers from ayatollah ghilmeini is the same kind of "blind" answers you get from Spencer.

It's easy to deny any association with anyone if you play the "see no evil" card, and that is what Spencer (and ayatollah ghilmeini) is doing.

And that is what Spencer has been doing all along. Spencer states that the Rouhs's book selection is not Nazi related. Ok, let's assume that (I looked the list over). First, much of the material he is selling is socialist crap, and material by holocaust deniers and jew haters. Just because a book doesn't have a swastika on it doesn't mean it doesn't contain material that is of interest, and supportive of a Nazi mindset.

And that is exactly what Rouhs's book selection consists of. It's actually clever. We don't sell Nazi books, we just sell books that speaks to Nazi's.

A sham on Rouhs's part and I can't believe Spencer is not aware of the material and authors on that book list. Did Robert even look at the page? There are books listed there that Spencer has railed against in the past, on his own website. Finklestein, Chompsky, Moore. Come on Robert, READ THE DAMN PAGE.

No, this is all damage control on Spencer's part, and it seems that ayatollah ghilmeini is a happy helper.

There was a good TV series made based on these books.I think it was called "Boney." Now that I think of it, it reminds me of the detective novels here that are set, I think, in Arizona with the native-American protagonist. Hmmm.

Aww - that series played when we had no TV set ...

I love his books, and that detective, Napoleon Bonaparte, is really something else.

That Arizona detective you're thinking of - gah, can't recall his name, but the writer was Tony Hillerman. That was one fantastic little series!

Snow ... winter ... thats not something one would naturally associate with your glorious country!
I say its glorious - never been there, but I read nearly all of Arthur W. Upfield's detective novels. He does describe the wonders of the landscape of your fantastic continent so very well!
I still dream of going there and seeing it for myself.

LOL. Pretty much. Although Nora tried to be tough. She just looked bitchy and bitter, though. Especially when Liz (Lynn could have done it, too, I've no doubt) went back and corrected her language on several things. That's what I'm wishing I would see more often from the GOP. Instead we get nodders like Steele who let lies and insults just pass right on by.

re: #465 aggieann

Exactly. Do we really want the organization responsible for the DMV also to be responsible for our medical treatment?

the last time i had to deal w/ the DMV, i went in w/ a beautiful small
bouquet of flowers, just a 'nosegay' really. i waited in line for 3 hours and finally.got called. it was late in the afternoon and i walked up to the window to
where the bureaucrat was waiting and frowning.
i said, " i know you have a tough job, i thought you might like these."
i handed her the flowers. her face brightened up.
she said, "oh my, thank you." she could not stop smiling.
she got me out of there in 5 minutes.
that's how i handle the DMV. of course i didn't feel like the flowers were
a bribe or anything because i love to give flowers to people.
but upon reflection we may reach a point where getting proper medical care
approved by a bureaucrat could require more than some carnations, lilies,
and ox eye daisies. (w/ a little greenery)

Walter, I do appreciate what you're saying, but for as long as I've been here, ayatollah ghilmeini has been one of the most respected commenters on LGF. Comment after comment after comment have ALL been home runs.
Which is why I'm so perplexed at her comments here today. Indeed, I was only asking half-in jest as to who is it that's posting as ayatollah ghilmeini.

541 ayatollah ghilmeini  Sun, Apr 26, 2009 8:20:56am

Charles will see the comment and deal with it as he chooses.

ProKoln said Spencer was going. Spencer says he is not. If he goes, as I said last night, he is a species of feces. But he is not going.

We are parsing every word and drawing every conclusion against him. While he would be wrong to do so, and this is pure speculation on my part, I have no idea of the man's inner mind and beliefs, the worst I can imagine of him is he perhaps somehow empathizes with the neos as the only way the Islamist tide doesn't swamp Europe. I would never agree with that but perhaps he has decided he trusts a fascist Europe more than an Islamist one. That also does not make him a supporter; nor would it be anything I could agree with. This would be a terrible mistake but it is not irrational to conclude that Europe is going down. If you assume that is the case, hold your nose and hoping the neonazis win are is no different the pick your poison expediency of supporting Stalin against Hitler.

Again the above is pure speculation on my part.

The key is to remember that Nuremberg rallies are important for fascists and pro-Koln is potentially a bellweather in European politics. Europe's politics died in 1914 and have never really recovered. Other than the bright light of Churchil it has been nothing but Chamberlains, Petains, Quislings, Mosleys, Galloways, Chiracs and Shroeders. Weak men of democracy and strong men for some totalitarian force. Fascists love to get their groove on together and march about in their swastika covered underwear, it is who they are. Missing a big like that is means missing the fun AND the main purpose of such rallies is self reinforcement of the radical beliefs.

Spencer need give no reason why he is not going. Having exchanged any number of messages with the man in the last two days, I am fairly confident he is not a fascist and his thinking falls within what I consider to be the acceptable bounds of human discourse. One does not have to like him nor subscribe to his thinking and give him the benefit of the doubt. He bears watching but should be given at least the courtesy of getting him to clarify what he is saying if there is some doubt or action we do not agree with or that appears wrong to our thinking.

Again, I am a Lizard through and through, I wrote an email to his editor at FrontPage expressing my concern that he was going to pro-Koln. Jamie Glazov forwarded the message to Spencer wrote me vehemently denying the accusation. At what point do we give the man the benefit of the doubt and stop parsing his every word and quote as incipient Nazism? There can be no question of the sincerity of his reply to me nor his clear statement he is not going to ProKoln. Do you think David Horowitz and Jamie Glazov would have anything to do with him if they thought he was a closet brownshirt?

As I stated above, the time has come to set the record straight and drop this matter.

Shoulda paid the fine, dingleberry!

This was a huge story down here and I'll find you a good link

True.

However, lets not forget that this is about associating with neonazis, and thus lending them respectability.
Its not about saying Spencer is one, himself.

It is a horrid situation, but I have to say that there are some things I cannot and will not contemplate in people who I thought were respectable.
One is Jew hate in any form - and you know yourself how that has been slowly creeping into the general discourse.
The other is any association with nazis, neo- or old ones. Not even because it may help in one's fight. It simply turns my guts inside out. Finding that material, even clad in gentle or veiled words, makes me sit up and take notice. It sometimes takes a while to become aware of that - but, as with Jew hate - it will out.

There are simply things which are not done.
These two constitute my line in the sand ...

ProKoln said Spencer was going. Spencer says he is not. If he goes, as I said last night, he is a species of feces. But he is not going.

I'm frankly amazed that you could read Robert Spencer's posts on this, calling me a "liar" and worse, smearing me in every possible way he can think of, and tell me that I need to drop it and move on.

I will certainly note that he NOW says he's not going, after waffling and denying there was any problem with the organizers for several days, and continuing to apologize for them.

But I have a question for you: if he were writing the same things about YOU that he's been writing about me, including posting videos comparing me to Hitler, how would that make you feel? Would you think it's just "time to move on?"

Robert Spencer may not be going to the Pro-Köln conference, but he has made no apparent attempt to protest the use of his name in promotional materials that tout him as one of the featured speakers. Maybe he should pay more attention to who he lends his name in support, and less to photoshops of Filip Dewinter buddying with Pro-Köln's Markus Beisicht on various backgrounds

Every single book on that page has material in them that would be supportive of a neo-nazi mindset.

Did Spencer even LOOK AT THAT PAGE.

It is - but something CArdiffians are famous for is not somethinga self-respecting author would do, and that is using as may expressions for 'as well', one after the other, to make one's point.

632 Ayatollah Ghilmeini  Sun, Apr 26, 2009 8:52:52am

I think there is some unclarity about where I am coming from on this. I have tried to act a peacemaker here. We accused Spencer of going to proKoln and were wrong. I think his associations with Jastras and even more so Trifkovic are not good things but that is HIS problem.

Here are Mr. Spencer's own words:

...you will find scurrilous and potentially quite damaging false charges, such as the assertion that I am a white supremacist and support David Duke and that I am having an affair with Pamela Geller. If Charles Johnson had an ounce of integrity, he would not allow such comments.

Not many neofascists denounce David Duke? Can you not imagine how accusations that he is best buds with Duke might piss the man off?

Pro-Koln are the real deal sons of Hitler. Would a man who genuinely was in sympathy with them bother to write me back such a comment?

It is my position that pro-Koln played us. It is my belief that Robert Spencer is not a closet Nazi and we do ourselves the greatest disservice by over parsing every word written by and about him. This thing has gotten way overblown wasted time words and bandwidth.

If Spencer is really a Nazi, there will be no keeping in his inner Goebbels; I think we should watch him. Make sure he is not playing a double game and see if he is lying about attending pro-Koln.

If he starts attending Vlaams Belang sing-alongs in Antwerp, then by all means, let us drop the hammer. I will go at him with verbal meat ax the likes of which you have never seen from me before. I understand he could be playing me and will respond accordingly.

But as I currently read him, he is entitled to the benefit of the doubt./.

You know this is going to get some major blow back from those sympathetic to the poor pirates. The Italians will have to pay a fine for having armed the ship, etc., etc.

Italian response.

Forearm jerk: Clench your right fist and jerk your forearm up as you slap your right bicep with your left palm. This is a rude phallic gesture that men throughout southern Europe often use the way many Americans "give someone the finger." This jumbo version of "flipping the bird" says "I'm superior" (it's an action some monkeys actually do with their penises to insult their peers). This "get lost" or "up yours" gesture is occasionally used by rude men in Britain and Germany as more of an "I want you" gesture about (but never to) a sexy woman.

Chin flick: Tilt your head back slightly and flick the back of your fingers forward in an arc from under your chin. In Italy and France, this means "I'm not interested, you bore me," or "You bother me." In southern Italy it can mean "No."

No-one serious has suggested any unprofessional relationship between Gellar and Spencer. I'd report a comment like that.

As for his complaint about "supporting David Duke", even non-serious commenters don't bother with that charge. As sattv4u2 #649 has pointed out, white nationalists in the Pro Köln mould are smart enough not to "support" that guy in public.

But the "white supremacist" charge is different. I agree that's between Spencer and his own soul, and cannot be proven. However his associations with white nationalists run so wide and deep that speculation about this as motive is fair.

re: #538 Lynn B.

Wouldn't surprise me in the least if he was, but not in this case. You're quoting from an article that's 3 years old. The one Robert linked to is here and it says exactly what he said it says.

Lynn B., I've read the article, even went to the linked web site and tried to confirm the allegation but I could find nothing. There is no independent source which would confirm the quotation. Every source I could find links back to JW (WSJ, USToday...) and JW links to VOA News which makes no reference.

If you go to the MSNBC interview with Albright (2:37) you will figure out that Albright is always saying the same: I'm no theologian but democracy in Islam is possible. She was saying this back three years ago and she is saying this now (MSNBC interview April/2009).
Why should she suddenly change her mind within some days (MSNBC interview)?

Makes no reference?

VOA News 24 April 2009 (Spencer's link):

...

At the meeting with ambassadors from member states of the Organization of The Islamic Conference, or OIC., Albright laid out the project's strategies for combating Islamic extremism: First, elevate diplomacy as the primary tool for resolving key conflicts involving Muslim countries. Then promote broad-based economic development in those nations, foster mutual respect and understanding between Americans and Muslims, and support efforts to improve governance and promote civic participation in predominantly Muslim societies.

"There is no doubt in my mind that Muslim countries can be democracies," Albright says. "Turkey is a perfect example of that. It is very evident, and, actually, in my study of religions, in many ways Islam is maybe the most democratic religion because there is nobody between you and God. So I do not think that is something that can be used as reason not to have Muslim democracies.

"

There it is. Maybe Mohamed Elshinnawi is misquoting her in the article, but that's what it says.

Lynn B.,

there is no source at VOA News. That´s what I said. Not more and not less.
