Tales of Chechnya's tortured land

THE hunt for a nest of female suicide bombers in Chechnya led an elite group of Russian special forces commandos to a small village deep in the countryside. There they surrounded a modest house just before dawn to be sure of catching their quarry unawares.

When the order came to storm the single-storey property, dozens of heavily armed men in masks and camouflage uniforms - unmarked to conceal their identity - had no difficulty in overwhelming the three women inside. Their captives were then driven to a military base.

The soldiers were responding to a tip-off that the eldest of the three, who was in her 40s, had been indoctrinating women to sacrifice themselves in Chechnya's ferocious war between Islamic militants and the Russians. The others captured with her were her latest recruits. One was barely 15.

"At first the older one denied everything," said a senior special forces officer last week. "Then we roughed her up and gave her electric shocks. She provided us with good information. Once we were done with her we shot her in the head.

"We disposed of her body in a field. We placed an artillery shell between her legs and one over her chest, added several 200g TNT blocks and blew her to smithereens. The trick is to make sure absolutely nothing is left. No body, no proof, no problem." The technique was known as pulverisation.

The young recruits were taken away by another unit for further interrogation before they, too, were executed.

The account is one of a series given to The Sunday Times by two special forces officers who fought the militants in Chechnya over a period of 10 years. Their testimony, the first of its kind to a foreign journalist, provides startling insights into the operation of secret Russian death squads during one of the most brutal conflicts since World War II.

I hope they didn't pour water on their faces./

Sorry to bring it up Shug, but I just don't understand why the US have not imposed travel restrictions to Mexico. Unless it is a political move and they don't want to hurt their economy by instilling a health fear in us and thus greatly reducing the amount of American turista dollars spent there.

Martial law can only exist in the absence of civilian courts (in theory). Not that I trust these folks, but martial law just doesn't apply.

I was just watching NBC Nightly News. They interviewed Janet Napolitano, and when asked why we haven't closed the border, she said;

1. It was difficult to do so.

2. With 20 cases in five states it was "too late".

3. It would adversely impact our trade with Mexico.

She did, however, say that we now have a "tri-national effort" to deal with it, with Canada, the U.s., and mexico working together.

Meanwhile, in Mexico, all schools are closed until May 6. And soccer games for the national championships are being played- but with no spectators, as public gatherings are prohibited until further notice.

Aaaarrghhh. Bad English on first page of ABCnews.com swine flu story. If they can't edit or write properly for their front page...

the journalism "profession" is populated by morons

In Mexico, more than a thousand people have been infected. The Mexican government has advised people to stay homebound, and the government has indicated those infected could be isolated. In the country's deserted capital, public events were cancelled for the next week or so. Sales of masks have soared as people try to prevent themselves from the potentially deadly disease.

and

At a White House press conference, Dr. Richard Besser, acting director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), ensured Americans that the administration is taking aggressive steps to control the outbreak, but that more cases are likely to expect to emerge in the near future.

FORMER Federal Minister for Human Rights Ansar Burney has alleged that Taliban killed innocent children with a toy bomb in lower Dir, the NWFP on their refusal to become suicide bombers.

According to a press release issued on Sunday, Ansar Burney said that taking the innocent childrenís lives in Lower Dir bombing had once again unveiled the real face of Taliban.

He said Taliban were now taking the lives of even those innocent children who were refusing to become their suicide bombers.

More bad use of English:

Officials dusted off the idea of a bio-terrorist threat. "There is nothing we have seen in our work that would suggest anything but a naturally occuring event," Bresser said.

That generally means that they brought the idea forward, not discounted it.

Actually, officials discounted the idea makes much more sense in that sentence.

OT - the latest post of 'Wild' Irish Rose - here should raise the hackles of almost all who post here - in particular my fellow long time posters.

The people who have attacked Mr. Johnson (proprietor of Little Green Footballs) so viciously at this website for months on end are now turning on me, simply because I've decided to come to Mr. Johnsons' defense.

And they've apparently decided that my sons' honorable service to our Nation is an acceptable route for personal attack.

This is, quite simply, beyond the pale. It reflects the utter bankruptcy, angst, and anger that comes from those who cannot differentiate their ego from their arguments and have lost all credibility to present a cogent and influential argument. None of us, in particular someone who has a loved one in harms way, deserves the assaults from these assholes. These schmucks are at the point where they can no longer provide a respectful debate for their position and have to resort to the baseless and pathetic efforts of intimidation and insults in order to further their odious views.

Here's a message to them that comes from a level that I try not to lower myself to - but fits so well - Fuck You!

Remeber this speech?

"The B-1 bomber, that Senator Kerry opposed, dropped 40% of the bombs in the first six months of [Operation] Enduring Freedom.

The B-2 bomber, that Senator Kerry opposed, delivered air strikes against the Taliban in Afghanistan and Hussein's command post in Iraq.

The F-14A Tomcats, that Senator Kerry opposed, shot down Khadifi's Libyan MIGs over the Gulf of Sidra.

The modernized F-14D, that Senator Kerry opposed, delivered missile strikes against Tora Bora.

The Apache helicopter, that Senator Kerry opposed, took out those Republican Guard tanks in Kuwait in the Gulf War.

The F-15 Eagles, that Senator Kerry opposed, flew cover over our Nation's Capital and this very city after 9/11

I assume it's been brought up already, but has anyone else noticed the eerie, Michael Chricton movie-ish graphics and effects in the swine flu coverage? I don't think it's a big deal or any kind of wacky conspiracy, but it really does kind of look like a movie's representation of what an outbreak would look like.

re: #97 buzzsawmonkey

It appears to me that the purpose of waterboarding is to induce an involuntary panic reaction without causing permanent damage or a life-threatening situation, so that the subject, in the grip of the panic reaction, will be induced to speak.

This is harsh; it is unpleasant; it is even nasty. But it is a long way from "torture," as that word is conventionally understood.

Watch a couple episodes of "The Tudors" and you will see torture that you can not imagine. Those people did horrific acts that left one permanently scarred.

Iraq says US raid 'a crime,' violated security pact
26 Apr 2009 20:43:37 GMT
Source: Reuters
* Iraq says U.S. raid killing two was a crime
* Iraq demands those behind raid sent to court
* U.S. forces say targeted arms smuggling
(Adds eyewitness, state TV, Wasit deputy)
By Aref Mohammed
BASRA, Iraq, April 26 (Reuters) - Iraq considers a U.S. military raid that killed two people a crime and wants U.S. forces to hand over those responsible to the courts, an Iraqi official said on Sunday.
Hundreds of Iraqis protested in the southern city of Kut against U.S. forces and the provincial governor also condemned the military operation.
The U.S. military had any immediate comment on the Iraqi stance but said the raid was carried out with the full approval of Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki's government .
It said it had targeted "special group" fighters, its term for Shi'ite militiamen the United States says are funded and armed by Iran, in the operation early on Sunday in Kut, 150 km (95 miles) southeast of Baghdad.
"The general commander is affirming that the killing of two citizens and detaining of others in Kut is considered a violation of the security pact," said an official in the office of Major General Qassim Moussawi, Baghdad's security spokesman.
"He asks the commander of the multinational forces to release the detainees and hand over those responsible for this crime to the courts."
'General commander' refers to Maliki.
Under the U.S.-Iraqi security pact that came into force this year, the 137,000 U.S. troops in Iraq can no longer conduct military operations without Iraqi approval.
The pact says U.S. soldiers are immune from prosecution in Iraqi courts unless they are suspected of grave crimes committed while off duty outside their bases.

This pact was signed last fall and came into effect Jan 1, 2009.

Last night on the LNDT I posted a sampling of comments from Glenn Becks official 912 project forum page, regarding the swine flu (just in case there was any doubt that Beck's followers are just re-warmed Paulians.)

They are still at it over there:

Who thinks this Swine Flu could be used to stop future gatterings, such as TEA PARTIES ?

-

very good question . it would make any gatherings illegal of large crowds to prevent spread. anything is possible with these fools . we need to think about all these sceneirios ..

-

Watch the other hand! Here we go again. This Administration has one catastrophy after another. This looks man made. Come on what are the odds of Swine, Human and Avian flu together? Polictics at its worse! If it is, this is murder at its highest degree. Have you ever seen the government pounce on anything of this nature so fast? Unless they know where it came from and where it is going. Or have an agenda for it. Or are responsible for it. This is just to 24 for me. I smell a comission coming on this one.

-

I think that "test" was already accomplished via the West Nile Virus. I won't go so far as to say that these two examples, or others, are instances of biological warfare, but I will say that I am open to the possibility that they are because it is possible that they are.

Ticket prices in NY account for a lot of that...and overall numbers are down but the smaller capacities of both NY parks also contribute to this.

I'll see the Yanks when they come out to SoCal...and if I can wangle a trip to NYC this summer for business...but I will be most likely sitting in nose-bleed territory given how the economy is impacting biz...

Problem is they already sold X% at the original rate. If they now lower that, they would have to refund those who already bought or there would be a riot. And I assume when I go, those ain't the tickets they are gonna give me. But we will see.

UAW Reaches Painful Concession Agreement With Chrysler, Fiat, U.S. Government
Sunday, April 26, 2009
PrintShareThis
DETROIT — The United Auto Workers union says it has reached a concession agreement with Chrysler, Fiat and the U.S. government.

The union said the deal is painful but takes advantage of the second chance the company was given by the Treasury Department.

The government rejected Chrysler's viability plan in February and said it could not stand on its own.

The union deal means the company has cleared another major hurdle as it races toward a Thursday deadline to restructure and sign an alliance with Italy's Fiat Group SpA.

Maybe it's just me, but this all smells rotten to me!

I just received word that my 68 year old sister came home from afternoon services, sat down in the living room to rest for a moment. Then quietly passed away. I'm in shock, and not doing very well at the moment.

Of all the ways to go? Quietly passing away is top shelf.

For that, your sister is fortunate.

Nope, living on base and waiting for word of his next deployment. Thanks for asking.

THE WAVE

She slips from us as the wave from off the beach.
A thousand hearts. like pebbles dancing in the surf,
tumble in chase.

Each stone and heart, polished by her touch and moved by her passing,
pursues in prayer and song.

Watch for her in every wind-tossed swell, listen for her in the sea bird's song,
she is with us.

I am so sorry--please accept my deepest sympathy. I've added you to the prayer list.
I know it won't mean much right now, but it sounds as if your sister passed away in certain peace.

Dustyvet,

A Lizard just emailed me, and I am so sorry about your sister.

May she rest in peace.

Please take care of yourself. This has to be so hard for you and your family.

Where's the bass player? In the back. Number of bass solos? 0. Number of camera shots on the bass player? 0.

People just don't properly appreciate a nice, big bottom.

309 doovdevan  Sun, Apr 26, 2009 9:05:22pm

re: #308 Christopher Luebcke

There was a single camera shot of the bass player towards the end. Looks like Scott Thile, Nickel Creek's original bass player, who is also Chris Thile's (mandolin) father. This dates back to about 8-10 years ago.

Great to see Nickel Creek here at LGF, as a huge fan of Chris Thile and a huge fan of LGF :)

Nickel Creek's did not break up - they just said "farewell for now" and they'll be back. Sean Watkins (guitar) is touring in support of Sara Watkins (fiddle) new solo album, and I'd bet that Chris will join them somewhere along the way.

Here's Chris Thile playing with Mike Marshall:

So sorry to read about your lost, DustyVet. 68 years old is too young to be perished. Our 61 first born sister is vanished slowly & painfully through Parkinson disease. Horribly ending to a life full with scientific discoveries, as a molecular biological women researcher and good honest citizen, wife & mother.
