One good thing. My girlfriend has to drive her older daughter back to college tonight, so, because of the possible snow, she is going to stop here in Golden on the way back and spend the night here, instead of going back up into the mountains. And of course Buddy Holly went on to be a significant force in Rock until his tragic death.

LGF'ers are an eclectic lot.

Eclectic is a good word. There's so much great music out there including Western Swing. Back in the 80s that was thing to say when people would ask what music you liked: the answer would typically be "I have eclectic taste."

We are looking at possibly replacing our camera, as it has ceased to take pictures. It is a Canon A80, to give you an idea of what level of photography we have used, and has given us great service, but it has gone insane. (I expect messages about conspiracy theories next.)

Does anyone have a camera they love and would they recommend it? Would have to be digital, as I am a photography idiot.

re: #115 capitalist piglet

I am a bit. My dad (a guitar player) loved Bob Wills, so I grew up a little bit on that, but mostly on Django Reinhardt.

Speaking of Bob Wills, he had a lap steel player in the band, Leon McAuliffe, who, in a backhanded sort of way became the inspiration for this guy. I heard a radio interview with Sonny Rhodes, and he mentioned growing up in Texas, and that he used to hang out at the local music venues and earn pocket money humping touring musicians' gear into the back-stage. One day, that band was Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys, and Sonny helped haul in Leon's lap steel. Sonny expressed admiration for the instrument, and Leon said in a kindly sort of way (Sonny's words), "Son, that guitar is a white man's instrument, and you'll never be able to play it." Well, that was all it took to plant a seed of determination in Sonny's mind, and the rest is history.

Sonny plays Calgary several times a year, and I've had the great pleasure of sitting down and sharing a beer or two with him. A Real fine gentleman, indeed.

It's their job. We pay them to do this.

Read this awhile ago ....don't know how substantial this is, but it links to a report from veratect on the timeline:

Swine-flu outbreak linked to Smithfield factory farms

"Residents [of Perote] believed the outbreak had been caused by contamination from pig breeding farms located in the area. They believed that the farms, operated by Granjas Carroll, polluted the atmosphere and local water bodies, which in turn led to the disease outbreak. According to residents, the company denied responsibility for the outbreak and attributed the cases to “flu.” However, a municipal health official stated that preliminary investigations indicated that the disease vector was a type of fly that reproduces in pig waste and that the outbreak was linked to the pig farms. It was unclear whether health officials had identified a suspected pathogen responsible for this outbreak."

In fact, Paul McCartney (who was stupid enough to let Michael Jackson *spit* buy the rights to all of the Beatles songs), was smart enough to buy the Buddy Holly song rights. And up until last year, McCartney had an annual FREE dance/concert/whatever on Buddy Holly's birthday to honor him.

indeed...the Stones covered it first (as usual) and that was my point for all the Stones haters out there...they have done that song over and over through the years and have refined it into a smokin rhythm tribute to Holly....the Rolling Stones worshipped their elders and covered them for 40 years...who can say as much?...they alone revived the blues in the States and went on to do Holly, Chuck Berry, Bo Diddley, Muddy Waters and others when their careers were on the ropes...the Stones rule and that's why right there....the greatest R/B band ever

Well all they've said so far (someone please correct me if I'm wrong on this) was the following: wash you hands with hot water and soap frequently; that kids and young adults, paradoxically appear to be more likely to be infected than older folks (could be because older folks are more likely to have built up resistance to flu strains and have recently - last winter - received A flu shot (even if for the wrong flu) and that Tamiful does indeed cure the swine flu virus if administered within 3-5 days of your coming down with it.

As I understand it the ONLY reason this is considered an epidemic is because it can be spread by human to human contact, but that doesn't make a lot of sense to me - hell ALL flu's are spread by human to human contact, aren't they? So why is this one such a big deal? Seriously, I'm NOT belittiling the poor folks who've died from this (all in Mexico, iirc) but what makes it an "epidemic"?

Hey guys,

I figured this may be a good place to ask this stuff. My sister-in-law and brother are over and talking about babies blood being stored when they're born by the government and not getting disposed of to check for predisposed illnesses in a baby because they want to be able to use it against them when they get older for insurance purposes, etc.

Anyone have more information on this? Sounds exactly like a crazy theory to me because I've never heard anything regarding this, but figure I'd ask here if anyone knows what this is about and if it's BS (which it sounds like), then proof about that.

US to begin asking about flu at the border

WASHINGTON (AP) — U.S. officials will begin asking travelers about illness if they're entering the country from areas with confirmed swine flu.

Passengers won't be barred from getting into the United States. But they could be referred for further testing.

Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano characterized the step as more "passive surveillance," saying airline workers certainly could tell people they shouldn't fly if ill.

268 victor_yugo  Sun, Apr 26, 2009 10:07:19pm

From Wikipedia:

The Spanish flu caused an unusual number of deaths because it, like H5N1, caused a cytokine storm in the body. The virus infected lung cells, leading to overstimulation of the immune system via release of cytokine bursts into the lung tissue. This leads to extensive leukocyte migration towards the lungs, causing destruction of lung tissue and secretion of liquid into the lung, and making it difficult for the patient to breathe. Due to the nature of the infection, people with a normal healthy immune system were more susceptible to the disease, such as young adults compared to young children and the elderly.

From XKCD.com:

Bad flu epidemics can hit young adults hardest because they provoke their powerful immune systems into overreaction, so to stay healthy spend the next few weeks drunk and sleep-deprived to keep yours suppressed.

IIRC, this is a very unusual flu virus that went from pigs to humans, and the ramifications are rather scary. Here is an article that explains what it could do when and if it mutates. The increasing number of countries that now are involved? I have a strong feeling that the list will grow daily, as will the number of U.S states.

I am not taking it lightly, nor should anyone with a grain of common sense, and so far the actions, or better said 'inactions' of The One and Napolitano are a disgrace, and a danger to all of us.

Well yes - and it's true that it is allergy season down here in the Southland - where SO FAR (knocks on wood) there has been one case reported in Tenn and NONE in VA, N.C., S.C., Ga., Alabama, Florida, Louisiana or Mississipi. And all of said states are suffering from unusually bad allergy seasons.

re: #271 itellu3times

None of that is established.

Nobody has yet died from this in the US. Nobody.

Remember SARS from a few years ago? Like, seven people died? Likely, thousands, or millions, had the virus. Most flus are responsible for multiple deaths every year. I remain very, very skeptical about the severity of this.

[Link: www.cdc.gov...]

In September 1988, a previously healthy 32-year-old pregnant woman was hospitalized for pneumonia and died 8 days later. A swine H1N1 flu virus was detected. Four days before getting sick, the patient visited a county fair swine exhibition where there was widespread influenza-like illness among the swine.

Probably the most well known is an outbreak of swine flu among soldiers in Fort Dix, New Jersey in 1976. The virus caused disease with x-ray evidence of pneumonia in at least 4 soldiers and 1 death; all of these patients had previously been healthy.

No one knows where this one is going.

We (USA) got caught unawares. The first CDC alert (that I received) went out on 4/22.

New Strain of Swine Flu in Two Children in California
Neither child had contact with pigs; the source of the infection is unknown. The lack of known exposure to pigs in the two cases increases the possibility that human-to-human transmission of this new influenza virus has occurred.

I would rather err on the side of caution.

well, I had this problem a while ago too
very slow loading of LGF

eventually it went away
but was odd
almost like time of day issues in that at certain hours LGF would not load or would load slow

somewhere my ISP must be using string and a coke can to route packets

been doing this now for several days
then once in a while, poof
LGF loads fast
then suddenly slow again

ran a complete scan, all clean in memory and HD's

odd stuff, how slow LGF is loading
and it's late on a Sunday night too

As far as the flu scare goes, all I plan to do is observe the normal hygiene practices you do in cold season. Wash your hands frequently, avoid people with obvious symptoms, and keep regular hours, and don't let myself get run down. I'm just getting over a head cold, which only lasted about 4 days, a mild one actually.

It might be smart to get some Tamiflu on hand, but the most important thing one can do for this swine flu is to get under a doctor's care ASAP if flu symptoms occur.

Generally, enveloped (lipophilic) viruses are susceptible to alcohol: Herpes simplex virus (HSV), human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), influenza virus (Flu), respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), vaccinia virus, Hepatitis B and C viruses are considered susceptible to alcohols. However, certain nonenveloped (nonlipophilic) viruses such as hepatitis A and enteroviruses, which are both responsible for viral gastrointestinal infections. Depending on the alcohol concentration of the hand-cleanser and time of exposure to the alcohol, hepatitis A and other nonlipophilic viruses may not be eliminated.

That is one almost 3 year old that really kisses on the lips! ;) I think that my daughter and son in law will have to let him know, on his level, that he should not kiss us until they tell him it is OK. I wonder what his Gan (Jewish nursery school) will do.

And the 2 girls are in schools in NY and NJ, where I imagine that they will be cautioned re sharing lunches, etc.

What scares me the most? Too many parents, who know their child(ren) are already ill, still send them to school. It is irresponsible and just wrong, as the school nurse would have to handle it, and any bug will spread like wildfire.

I am a retired RN, and when my 4 kids were in school (they are all in their 40's, except for the youngest, who is in his mid-30's) I do not remember how many times the school RN would ask me to help out, as there were kids who had fevers, etc., and were sent to school.

The conversations we had about this, when it was not overflowing? You can imagine.

At this point, I know just how precious having a job is to people, and that they are afraid to call in sick even when they are. But they are only passing their bug around, and also probably they will be far more ill than they would be if they had called in sick.

There is never a good time for what may turn out to be a pandemic, but now? It is frightening, especially for those who have lost their health coverage.

And with The One in office? May G-d help us all.

Sorry to sound so callous, but the Mexican government is managing this far better that The One is doing here, and yes, Mexico City, by closing so many places, is averting a far worse epidemic. They are also asking people to stay home.

And any influenza does not care if you are rich or poor. It is an equal-opportunity infector, regardless of social class, race or religion.

G'nite, all.
