One good thing. My girlfriend has to drive her older daughter back to college tonight, so, because of the possible snow, she is going to stop here in Golden on the way back and spend the night here, instead of going back up into the mountains. re: #115 capitalist piglet
I am a bit. My dad (a guitar player) loved Bob Wills, so I grew up a little bit on that, but mostly on Django Reinhardt.
Speaking of Bob Wills, he had a lap steel player in the band, Leon McAuliffe, who, in a backhanded sort of way became the inspiration for this guy. I heard a radio interview with Sonny Rhodes, and he mentioned growing up in Texas, and that he used to hang out at the local music venues and earn pocket money humping touring musicians' gear into the back-stage. One day, that band was Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys, and Sonny helped haul in Leon's lap steel. Sonny expressed admiration for the instrument, and Leon said in a kindly sort of way (Sonny's words), "Son, that guitar is a white man's instrument, and you'll never be able to play it." Well, that was all it took to plant a seed of determination in Sonny's mind, and the rest is history.
Sonny plays Calgary several times a year, and I've had the great pleasure of sitting down and sharing a beer or two with him. A Real fine gentleman, indeed.

It's their job. We pay them to do this.

Read this awhile ago ....don't know how substantial this is, but it links to a report from veratect on the timeline:
Swine-flu outbreak linked to Smithfield factory farms
"Residents [of Perote] believed the outbreak had been caused by contamination from pig breeding farms located in the area. They believed that the farms, operated by Granjas Carroll, polluted the atmosphere and local water bodies, which in turn led to the disease outbreak. According to residents, the company denied responsibility for the outbreak and attributed the cases to “flu.” However, a municipal health official stated that preliminary investigations indicated that the disease vector was a type of fly that reproduces in pig waste and that the outbreak was linked to the pig farms. It was unclear whether health officials had identified a suspected pathogen responsible for this outbreak."

I was listening to those guys on Youtube a few nights back. I got to see Doug Sahm play live with Gene Taylor and Amos Garret in Edmonton in the late '80s. That trio put out an album entitled "Return of the Formerly Brothers." It's well worth looking for.

You're more than welcome, but some other lizard posted it in the Flu thread itself - I'm just passing it on!
Hope it helps.
As I understand it the ONLY reason this is considered an epidemic is because it can be spread by human to human contact, but that doesn't make a lot of sense to me - hell ALL flu's are spread by human to human contact, aren't they? So why is this one such a big deal? Seriously, I'm NOT belittiling the poor folks who've died from this (all in Mexico, iirc) but what makes it an "epidemic"?

Hey guys,
I figured this may be a good place to ask this stuff. My sister-in-law and brother are over and talking about babies blood being stored when they're born by the government and not getting disposed of to check for predisposed illnesses in a baby because they want to be able to use it against them when they get older for insurance purposes, etc.
Anyone have more information on this? Sounds exactly like a crazy theory to me because I've never heard anything regarding this, but figure I'd ask here if anyone knows what this is about and if it's BS (which it sounds like), then proof about that.

US to begin asking about flu at the border
11 hours ago
WASHINGTON (AP) — U.S. officials will begin asking travelers about illness if they're entering the country from areas with confirmed swine flu.
Passengers won't be barred from getting into the United States. But they could be referred for further testing.
Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano characterized the step as more "passive surveillance," saying airline workers certainly could tell people they shouldn't fly if ill.
She spoke at a White House news conference Sunday.

From Wikipedia:
The Spanish flu caused an unusual number of deaths because it, like H5N1, caused a cytokine storm in the body. The virus infected lung cells, leading to overstimulation of the immune system via release of cytokine bursts into the lung tissue. This leads to extensive leukocyte migration towards the lungs, causing destruction of lung tissue and secretion of liquid into the lung, and making it difficult for the patient to breathe. Due to the nature of the infection, people with a normal healthy immune system were more susceptible to the disease, such as young adults compared to young children and the elderly.
From XKCD.com:
Bad flu epidemics can hit young adults hardest because they provoke their powerful immune systems into overreaction, so to stay healthy spend the next few weeks drunk and sleep-deprived to keep yours suppressed.

IIRC, this is a very unusual flu virus that went from pigs to humans, and the ramifications are rather scary. Here is an article that explains what it could do when and if it mutates. The increasing number of countries that now are involved? I have a strong feeling that the list will grow daily, as will the number of U.S states.
I am not taking it lightly, nor should anyone with a grain of common sense, and so far the actions, or better said 'inactions' of The One and Napolitano are a disgrace, and a danger to all of us.

[Link: www.cdc.gov...]
In September 1988, a previously healthy 32-year-old pregnant woman was hospitalized for pneumonia and died 8 days later. A swine H1N1 flu virus was detected. Four days before getting sick, the patient visited a county fair swine exhibition where there was widespread influenza-like illness among the swine.
Probably the most well known is an outbreak of swine flu among soldiers in Fort Dix, New Jersey in 1976. The virus caused disease with x-ray evidence of pneumonia in at least 4 soldiers and 1 death; all of these patients had previously been healthy.
No one knows where this one is going.
We (USA) got caught unawares. The first CDC alert (that I received) went out on 4/22.

New Strain of Swine Flu in Two Children in California
Neither child had contact with pigs; the source of the infection is unknown. The lack of known exposure to pigs in the two cases increases the possibility that human-to-human transmission of this new influenza virus has occurred.
I would rather err on the side of caution.

I got rid of them and now IE runs smooth (well ....ok, you know what I mean :) and it has caught two more since.
Here's the free download. I can't recommend it highly enough.
It doesn't take long to download and install. If you decide to try it, let me know what you find.
Good luck!
ok, will look at it
but the odd thing is it is on LGF
I don't do much browsing though to be honest
I look at a couple news sites and that is it
most of my time is spent answering emails and phone calls

My friend Joann and I were trying not to touch our faces today.
That, and please do not shake hands with anyone. We will take Purell with us for the duration. The hardest part will be to not kiss my grandkids. The almost-7 and 9 year old granddaughters will understand, but the toddler loves to kiss on the lips.
I will try to kiss him on the top of his head.

OK, I took a chance.
Pat ...I run a firewall, spybot, all kinds of protection. I was floored when this little ole free program found what it did. My other stuff is gone now (on recommendation of afore-mentioned lizards) ....and I love this program.

I am not at all surprised, and wish that we could share PM Harper! Would Canada adopt us?

I've seen in several health boards today that the Purell type products are ineffective against viral. Only bacterial. Alcohol, also ineffective? Lysol or bleach for disinfecting.

I constantly use Purell...don't know what it does but I use it anyway.
I also take at least 1000mg of Vitamin C every day.

As far as the flu scare goes, all I plan to do is observe the normal hygiene practices you do in cold season. Wash your hands frequently, avoid people with obvious symptoms, and keep regular hours, and don't let myself get run down. I'm just getting over a head cold, which only lasted about 4 days, a mild one actually.
It might be smart to get some Tamiflu on hand, but the most important thing one can do for this swine flu is to get under a doctor's care ASAP if flu symptoms occur.

I hate that stuff, Matrix, and I am on a university campus every day for eight hours. I cringe sometimes to know what I come in contact with. I never use handrails, push doors open with my elbows and I wash my hands many times a day. I've trained myself to leave my face alone, too. The purell stuff just feels yukky on my hands and dries them out.
Most things just pass me by ....I nursed my two sick kids for a week plus a friend who was unfortunate enough to drop by for a visit a few weeks ago. I don't know WHAT they had (although I am now getting a creepy feeling about it) .....fever of 102, vomiting, deep muscle and joint pain, bedridden ...complete range of flu symptoms, lingering respiratory problems. I never caught it.

Here they are advising people to take Purell with them. It is good as it does really kill nearly all the bacteria, etc., and I think it also covers viruses.

She was confirmed in January as head of Dept Homeland Security. Sebelius is the nominee for Dept Health Human Services (under whose purview this should fall, I believe), but so far there is no head of DHHS so Napolitano is acting in charge. (slight intended ...)

He is a mensch, and I just hope that we get a chance to have a president like him, sooner rather than later...are you sure he would not be willing to make us a Province? ;)

I don't touch as much as I can, but sometimes there's no avoiding. I use the sanitizer stuff when I don't have access to a sink and some soap (like when I get into my car). I clorox-wipe my laptop keyboard every time I come home from school or work.
I just try my best.

Generally, enveloped (lipophilic) viruses are susceptible to alcohol: Herpes simplex virus (HSV), human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), influenza virus (Flu), respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), vaccinia virus, Hepatitis B and C viruses are considered susceptible to alcohols. However, certain nonenveloped (nonlipophilic) viruses such as hepatitis A and enteroviruses, which are both responsible for viral gastrointestinal infections. Depending on the alcohol concentration of the hand-cleanser and time of exposure to the alcohol, hepatitis A and other nonlipophilic viruses may not be eliminated.

re: #361 victor_yugo
That is one almost 3 year old that really kisses on the lips! ;) I think that my daughter and son in law will have to let him know, on his level, that he should not kiss us until they tell him it is OK. I wonder what his Gan (Jewish nursery school) will do.
And the 2 girls are in schools in NY and NJ, where I imagine that they will be cautioned re sharing lunches, etc.
What scares me the most? Too many parents, who know their child(ren) are already ill, still send them to school. It is irresponsible and just wrong, as the school nurse would have to handle it, and any bug will spread like wildfire.
I am a retired RN, and when my 4 kids were in school (they are all in their 40's, except for the youngest, who is in his mid-30's) I do not remember how many times the school RN would ask me to help out, as there were kids who had fevers, etc., and were sent to school.
The conversations we had about this, when it was not overflowing? You can imagine.
At this point, I know just how precious having a job is to people, and that they are afraid to call in sick even when they are. But they are only passing their bug around, and also probably they will be far more ill than they would be if they had called in sick.
There is never a good time for what may turn out to be a pandemic, but now? It is frightening, especially for those who have lost their health coverage.
And with The One in office? May G-d help us all.
Sorry to sound so callous, but the Mexican government is managing this far better that The One is doing here, and yes, Mexico City, by closing so many places, is averting a far worse epidemic. They are also asking people to stay home.
And any influenza does not care if you are rich or poor. It is an equal-opportunity infector, regardless of social class, race or religion.
G'nite, all.

Thanks for that, gmsc. I meant to come back last night after my headache abated, but it got worse. I had to go to bed by the light of the silvery moon and hope for recovery. I'm all better this morning!
