And now I bid you all adieu. I must go to work in the morning and be productive all at the same time.

Charles - You don't need me to say it, but these guys aren't 1/2 of what you are. They hate you 'cause your beautiful! No seriously, they want what you have: Integrity, character, values, a strong belief system that supersedes blowing political winds and popularity contests.

A parting note from "So?"...
Kiss my ass Charles, you run your blog like a tyrant. Your ego is
getting bigger than Uranus, which is where you should shove it.

One thing that assholes and morons don't seem to understand about a privately-owned and run blog like LGF is that it is not a democracy, it's a benevolent dictatorship. We're here because Charles wants us here, so if we be nice, play it cool, and keep it groovy, we generally stay as long as we want. Otherwise, if you're a particularly odious dick/troll/moby, then you shouldn't expect to be around very long and have no one to blame but yourselves if Stinky shows you the door and puts his size 13s in your ass.

/morons and assholes, you're officially on notice (and you know who you are)...

Sorry, not my taste in music but, hey, thats all cool.

My wife and I have just taken up ballroom dance (lesson 2 last night) at the behest of my daughter who took it up last year and is now a bronze.

While I like the beat and Rythme of Carlos Santana, I am absolutely all thumbs (yes, thumbs) at the Cha Cha.

I refuse to give up.................

Charles, if you like Cuban-ish music, I wonder if you ever happened by a place called Boca Chica in Manhattan (conveniently located at First and First)? At least "back in the day", they used to have pretty great live Afro-Caribbean-Andean (take your pick, at least 2 of the 3) music.

17 Mich-again  Mon, Apr 27, 2009 8:26:14pm

That was some really cool music! At first it sounded to me like bluegrass, then jazz fusion, then Salsa. Not sure where they would stock that at Borders.

re: #22 Charles

Charles, I think this applies to your situation. Not that it justifies the BS you have to put up with, but perhaps a bit of perspective. It was written in 1915.

The Penalty of Leadership. A few snips..

Whether the leadership be vested in a man or in a manufactured product, emulation and envy are ever at work.

When a man's work becomes a standard for the whole world, it also becomes a target for the shafts of the envious few. If his work be merely mediocre, he will be left severely alone - if he achieve a masterpiece, it will set a million tongues a-wagging.

The leader is assailed because he is a leader, and the effort to equal him is merely added proof of that leadership. Failing to equal or to excel, the follower seeks to depreciate and to destroy - but only confirms once more the superiority of that which he strives to supplant. There is nothing new in this. It is as old as the world and as old as the human passions -envy, fear, greed, ambition, and the desire to surpass. And it all avails nothing. If the leader truly leads, he remains - the leader.

Oh, Lizards! I'm in a terrible quandry. As you may remember, I"m listening to War and Peace in audio. It is sold in two volumes, the first is 9 dowloads (most books are one volume maybe 2 downloads). Anyway each volume is very expensive and I purchased the first thru my membership credits with Audible.

I get a credit every month and generally buy the more expensive books with the credits. Now my next credit won't be available until the 14th of May and I've finished the first volume. Natasha just broke-off her engagement with Andre and the intrigue is at a crescendo. The next volume is $70 membership price.

Well I don't know about that one my friend. I think back to when Legionnaire's disease broke out in Philly, iirc, and they let folks know about it right away - same with the Cruise ship lines.
But it may be that the state of health care in Mexico is such that they didn't realize what was going on for awhile themselves.

I think the strain is weakening as there are fewer deaths being reported in Mexico and none here in the US (yet). Still, people at risk can still have a ton of trouble if it gets them....the elderly, the young, the already sick.....any kind of flu can make for all sorts of problems. I think this will fizzle out. But, Mexico should have let everyone know sooner...asked for help sooner.....

I read a book about the Spanish Flu that killed so many in 1918. I cannot recall the name off hand. The same thing happened then. It struck the young and healthy the hardest. I guess it thrives in healthy bodies better.

Miguel and I used to e-mail each other from time to time and he e-mailed me that it was hard for him to type.
So I called him on the phone and he sounded ok, but also said he had all of his family around him and he was ok.
That was probably six months ago and despite numerous e-mails from me - in English and in Spanish in case his Son was monitoring his e-mails and didn't speak English, and several "busy signal" phone calls, I haven't been able to reach him at all. I fear the worst for him.

I heard they were closing their schools down there.

They already have, and they will probably close the Metro today. In what I have seen, Mexico City looks like a ghost town. It is eery, and I hope that they realize that the masks actually do no good, sadly. People are being told to stay in their homes, etc., rather than go out. One of my friends has her grandchildren staying with her.

Monitoring our own personal health habits and routines are about all we can - and should - be doing at the moment. Situational awareness is preferable to hysteria, which I will not buy into. However, I'm one of those habitual news gatherers ...I like information.

As for the exact numbers, it is impossible to gather them. I don't think Mexico has even a guesstimate. The reports I am reading vary widely.

At the moment I am on Nexis-Lexis, reading that Australia has one million doses of vaccine that are useless and that it would take three weeks to piece together the swine flu virus and another six weeks to produce effective vaccinations.

AT this point, it's watch and see.

Red this earlier from Effect Measure:

THEY ARE DYING IN MEXICO CITY BECAUSE OF THE ELEVATION:
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/15581198
I dunno, maybe it is the elevation that causes low humidity. Elevation makes pneumonia more deadly. Mexico City and San Luis Potosi have high elevations. Not so much Baja Mexico and IDK about Oaxaca, but the majority of deaths are Mexico City.
The origination in Mexico is a complicating factor, but people aren't dying because they are Mexican, they are dying because they live at high altitude.

Research team cracks genetic code of virus

THE World Health Organisation's emergency committee is expected to decide as early as today whether to issue a pandemic alert, warning nations to prepare for a worldwide outbreak of the new swine flu.

Already scientists with the US Centres for Disease Control in Atlanta, Georgia, have cracked the genetic code of the virus, which is spreading worldwide at an alarming rate. Experts fear the new strain of H1N1 swine flu -- which first emerged in Mexico last month and has appeared in the US, Canada, Spain and possibly New Zealand and France -- has developed the ability to spread from person to person.

The decision to elevate the WHO's alert to pandemic level would depend mainly on whether the A/H1N1 swine flu is highly virulent, killing a high rate of people who contract it.

"It's potentially scarier than the outbreak of avian flu," virologist and influenza expert Douglas Richman of the University of California, San Diego, said in an online report in the journal Science.

That is because most strains of swine flu that infect people are spread only from pig to person, but the new strain of H1N1 swine flu seems to spread easily from human to human.
