Since people continue to rant about the Department of Homeland Security’s report on “right wing extremism,” saying things like:
I won’t hold my breath waiting for a “left wing extremist” report.
… here are two more DHS reports on “left wing extremism,” available through Wikileaks, and just like the “right wing extremism” report they’re marked “For Official Use Only:”

You mean the FEMA Camp, in the upper right-hand corner?
Left-wing extremists always have such innocuous sounding names. Like "environmental" and "animal rights" militants. They tend to sound so friendly and helpful.

It's called 'defiining the narrative.' Can't recall if it was Lenin or Goebels who remarked that if you control the language, you control the thought.
Personally, I consider the distinction to be a transition from specific, concrete concerns such as those enumerated in the two "left wing" analyses above to the incredibly broad, sweeping pre-judgments contained in the more recent "right wing" report. If either of the two reports above had flagged groups of people as potential terrorists for "liking animals" or "being concerned about the environment" -- rather than members of ELF or ALF -- then we might be looking apples to apples.

Exactly -- isn't the argument of the reactionary extremist rabblerousers supposed to be that, since Obama took over, DHS has been profiling veterans and coming to arrest them at night as they sleep? These reports were both released back during the Bush administration. And you may recall from a speech that some American celebrity gave in Europe (Sean Penn, maybe?) that back in the Bush days, the government used to secretly listen in on all liberals'p hone calls, and people were routinely getting arrested for doing things like making a $10 contribution to Greenpeace.
Obama's signature campaign slogan, Yes We Can, has been replicated by the Iranian president in a promotional video issued for Iran's presidential poll on 12 June, when Ahmadinejad is seeking reelection.
The video features a cover picture of Ahmadinejad wearing his trademark white jacket and pointing to the Farsi phrase Ma Mitavanim (We Can) on a blackboard. The film is aimed at students and capitalises on his former status as a university lecturer.

I noticed something once with groups that are begging for money. If you send them a tiny donation, like $2 for instance, within 6 months, they will spend more than that on postage begging for more, and that's at the cheaper bulk rates.
As long as they don't catch wind of the Violently Neutral Party
I'm suddenly reminded of the Dwarves in C.S. Lewis' The Last Battle. "The Dwarves are for themselves!" they cheerfully announce as they fire arrows at both sides.
I'm a member of that party. When we riot, we throw Molotov Shirley Temples.
actually, there is a simple recipe for turning 2 household ingredients into a non-flamable rocket propellant that is excellent for launching a 2 liter plastic bottle

I downloaded and read the DHS report. It boiled down to two points: 1.) Barak Obama is black and 2.) be on the lookout for the KKK.
That's ridiculous. But par for the course.
The fact is that there are a number of specific examples in the DHS report on right wing extremism, and it is NOT an attempt to smear all conservatives. Not even close.

I had mine done last year. From the time I was taken into the op room until I climbed into my car was 45 minutes. No pain. No pills after wards. 2 to 3 days of discomfort is all.
Note the speculative nature of one of the first summary paragraphs:
(U//LES) Threats from white supremacist and violent antigovernment groups during 2009 have been largely rhetorical and have not indicated plans to carry out violent acts. Nevertheless, the consequences of a prolonged economic downturn—including real estate foreclosures, unemployment, and an inability to obtain credit—could create a fertile recruiting environment for rightwing extremists and even result in confrontations between such groups and government authorities similar to those in the past.
Now compare to the several PAGES of ACTUAL threats and carried out attacks by the ecoterrorist groups.
Democrats Rep. Joe Sestak and Joe Torricelly of Pennsylvania are probably going nuts now that exRepublican Arlen Specter's going to get Pres. Obama's green light to run for Senator in their democrat primary.
Talk about pissed off. To the back of the bus, make way for high & mighty Specter, you lowly dems.

Oh. I know. I just cringe thinking about sharp objects near my family jewels.
There were these two cows, chatting over the fence between their fields.
The first cow said, "I tell you, this mad-cow-disease is really pretty scary. They say it is spreading fast; I heard it hit some cows down on the Johnson Farm."
The other cow replies, "I ain't worried, it don't affect us ducks."
I don't think the real issue here is that Homeland Security is doing threat assessments examining either the left or the right. (That's DHS's job) Leaks are done with purpose. That DHS leaked the "right wing extremist" report right before the "Tea Partys" may indicate a political agenda to control the news cycle. (I am not buying it's coincidence--just call me cynical.) The leaking of "left wing extremist" reports after all the conservative criticism of the prior report was done with purpose (as all leaks are--I know I am repeating myself). This second leak essentially inoculates DHS from being seen as creating the "right wing extremist" assessment for partisan political purposes while at the same time making conservative hysterical criticism seem rankly partisan and allowing partisan Democrats to lump reasoned critics (objecting to the rather glaring partisan leak of the report in conjunction with conservative protests against the economic policies of the Obama Administration in order to "frame" these protests as "extremist"--which was done) in with the hysterical right therefore muting the effectiveness of said reasoned critics.
These guys are real good at propaganda and media manipulation--scary good.
I'm suddenly reminded of the Dwarves in C.S. Lewis' The Last Battle. "The Dwarves are for themselves!" they cheerfully announce as they fire arrows at both sides.
as Treebeard would say 'we're not on either side because nobody is entirely on our side' or something to that effect.
Trust me, you don't want to. People have died doing that. I've always read the ingredients when using unfamiliar cleaners, to make sure I don't go there.
I'm a huge fan of Rudy in general. I've said it before, I think he's the greatest American political leader of our time. And in general I think he does an excellent job with this interview on CNN. However, there's one point where he didn't understand a question the interviewer asked, and so, at 1:56, he vamps by reflexively repeating this silly right-wing talking point, while justifiably criticizing Obama's abhorrent policy of pretending that Islamic extremism doesn't exist:
I'm thinking of the reaction of Islamic terrorists, which you're not allowed to say any more, by the way. The memo says we have to look at the veterans, the pro-life people that assemble for possibilities of terrorism. Not the Islamic terrorists. We've banned the word "Islamic terrorist."
Rudy is not doing himself any favors by repeating this junk.
Thanks Charles. This is the reason I'm so staunchly against Al Gore's climate hysteria mongering. He turns honorable concern for the environment into anger at capitalism.
The whole "right wing extremism" report is 9 pages long, including fluff. The summary statement at the beginning of the report indicates that there is no known active threat.
The ecoterrorism report is 40 pages, long containing over six pages profiling individual ecoterrorists by name, and five full pages of references. Another 9 full pages (ie more content than the entire other report) list individual terrorist attacks by these groups.
Trust me, you don't want to. People have died doing that. I've always read the ingredients when using unfamiliar cleaners, to make sure I don't go there.

I just knew it did something bad. DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME.
Appearing Wednesday before a Senate panel, Napolitano said that "passive surveillance" is "not an accurate picture of what is going on" at U.S. entry points. She had used that term Tuesday morning to describe the nature of the monitoring for illness.

I was somewhat incensed by the news reports on it, but after actually having read the report, I don't believe that it tars all Republicans or conservatives (or libertarians for that matter) with the violent extremist brush. Of course it talked about the 1995 OKC bombing, and briefly touched on McVeigh's motivation stemming from the government's handling of Randy Weaver. The part about veterans said specifically that violent extremists would look to recruit servicemen returning from Iraq due to their experience in combat. I don't believe it implied that veterans tended toward violent extremism.
It really could be boiled down to maybe three things. 1.) people are nervous about the bad economy and 2. the president is black, so 3.) be on the lookout for increased KKK activity. It's like a bulletin to be issued to law-enforcement agencies. Personally, I don't see it as a big deal. It makes for a great headline, though.
True.
But 1/2 the roads in and out of the state are now closed and we expect another 24 hours of snow.
I shoveled my patio four times last night. Its heavy, its wet, its slippery. The worst part is the 8 ft drifts on the side of the road.
I know you're probably sick of it but I miss snow. None down here in SoCal. I loved it when I was a kid growing up in Chicago. Also used to love to drive in it...
Swine Flu News Conference on all network channels.
Was there anything new and interesting? What I gleaned from the CDC's website today was that there are now 91 confirmed cases in the U.S., in ten states that range from coast to coast and from the Mexican border to the Canadian border, and that there has been one death.
Also, the incubation period is "2 to 7 days." Someone asked why the Mexican patients seem to be getting so much sicker than the American ones, which is something that has interested me, but the CDC doc just kinda said some lame stuff and didn't really have an answer.
I am a member of PETA--People for Eating Tasty Animals.
I worked with the guy who originally set up the PETA site (the funny one, not the crazy one) and he's got some stories about the whole thing, the lawsuit attempts, the domain stealing... those PETA guys (the crazy one, not the funny one) are insane.

I've looked at a lot of the polls circulating about grading Obama's first craptacular 100 days. A consistent question is: "Do you think his speeches are inspiring." A lot of people grade him an A, even if they give him an F overall.
To me, his speeches are completely the opposite of "inspiring," they are extraordinarily fear-mongering. Everything is a crises. Everything is a catastrophe. I'll also add they are pendantic and dull, anything but "inspiring."
I'm hesitant to post this, because I'm sure it will draw the attention of Killgore Trout, Junior Field Representative of the Southern Poverty Law Center. But it's too interesting to ignore.
A student group that bills itself as "America's right wing youth movement" focused on countering radical multiculturism, socialism and mass immigration is causing a stir on a growing number of college campuses across the country.
[snip>]
"A great part of college is definitely meeting people of different backgrounds, but a multicultural ideology teaches that we should appreciate things just because they're different from our culture with no regards to the quality of the culture and that all cultures are inherently equal," said Trevor Williams, president of YWC's Vanderbilt chapter. "I absolutely disagree."
Of course, this is automatically racist:
"'Western' is a veiled term that means 'white,'" University of North Carolina graduate student Tyler Oakley wrote in an e-mail to FOXNews.com. "I believe that our democracy is strong enough to allow extreme forms of speech, but YWC's message is essentially a negative one, an assault on not being white or non-Western, and is therefore hateful, if not blatant hate speech."
Don't worry, the SPLC is on the case:
Officials at the Southern Poverty Law Center, which identifies and tracks hate groups in the U.S., told FOXNews.com that the YWC is not currently on its list, but some of the group's views are "suspect," including the notion that Western civilization is somehow superior.
Actually, I was on the YWC's side until I got to this part:
Jesse Jones, a freshman at Vanderbilt, where YWC hosted former U.S. Treasurer Bay Buchanan last month, acknowledged the group's right to organize and share its views.
Sister of -- you guessed it -- Pat Buchanan. These guys have got to get their heads out of their butts before they manage to destroy conservatism for the next generation, too.
WTF with this? The media or whom ever behind it is making a mountain from less than a mole hill. It is spring time, not flu season!

Gore isn't above taking a cut off the hysteria, though!
Gore's a hypocritical fake tree hugger--getting rich off the schemes to "control" climate.

They covered this. There were so many small groups on the fringe right, they didn't feel they could list them all.
Where does it say that? Maybe I'm missing something, but I don't see anything like that in the report. What I see is speculative fluff like this:
(U//FOUO) DHS/I&A assesses that the combination of environmental factors that echo the 1990s, including heightened interest in legislation for tighter firearms restrictions and returning military veterans, as well as several new trends, including an uncertain economy and a perceived rising influence of other countries, may be invigorating rightwing extremist activity, specifically the white supremacist and militia movements. To the extent that these factors persist, rightwing extremism is likely to grow in strength.
May be?
Meanwhile the DHS claims this:
"(U//FOUO) DHS/I&A assesses that lone wolves and small terrorist cells embracing violent rightwing extremist ideology are the most dangerous domestic terrorism threat in the United States. Information from law enforcement and nongovernmental organizations indicates lone wolves and small terrorist cells have shown intent—and, in some cases, the capability—to commit violent acts."
Meanwhile, the report on ecoterrorism isn't speculative at all, explicitly listing well over 100 actual ecoterrorist attacks in the last ten years.

I read they have lowered the estimate of deaths in Mexico to 7 confirmed by testing. Its not as virulent as we thought. No Americans have died at this point

Let's see...loss of jobs, loss of health insurance, can't get a loan from the bank, major illness...Hello, National Healthcare!
Ah yes, I remember. They brought the little kid here to be treated.
It sounds like there still haven't been any really serious, life-threatening cases in the US, other than people who themselves came directly from Mexico.
I do not think this means that Americans have nothing to worry about unless they travel to Mexico. One's immune system doesn't instantly vanish when one crosses the border to Mexico. But I'm just really wondering why this is happening.
I also don't think it's as bad as the hysteria would suggest. An epidimologist on the radio today said that each day that goes by where there are no deaths of otherwise young, healthy people is actually a sign that it may be a flu just like any other. The young, elderly and immunilogically compromised are always at higher risk for flus and other respiratory illnesses.
There is a basic rational argument that so many people seem to forget and it goes something like this: "All Leftist terror groups are filled with Leftists but not all Leftists are terrorists". Now insert "conservative" or "muslim" in those spots and it is still true. Or any group.
People of a group shouldn't take offense when that rationale is used. If they oppose it you have to wonder why. See CAIR.
I read they have lowered the estimate of deaths in Mexico to 7 confirmed by testing. Its not as virulent as we thought. No Americans have died at this point
I thought an 18 month old in Texas had died. Was that not true?
That's not an argument, so I guess you don't have one?
I read all 3 reports and each one is of an entirely different character.
The right-wing DHS report is about historical resurgence and recruiting. It refers to a few historical events, but doesn't go into depth about specific right-wing groups. It's about possible or likely trends based on past behavior.
The left-wing eco-terrorist report is about the specific groups and their operational tactics and philosophies - all in considerable detail.
Ah yes, I remember. They brought the little kid here to be treated.

Well, the Trilateral commission and the Bildberg conspiracy couldn't afford the travel to test their latest germ in Africa, so they just went to Mexico.
/YES THIS IS SARC but some morons will believe it anyway
A woman has twins and gives them up for adoption. One of them goes to a family in Egypt and is named "Ahmal." The other goes to a family in Spain; they name him "Juan." Year's later; Juan sends a picture of himself to his birth mother. Upon receiving the picture, she tells her
husband that she wishes she also had a picture of Ahmal. Her husband responds, "They're twins! If you've seen Juan, you've seen Ahmal."

his 'speeches' are so boring.
nothing concrete to really applaud. just generic gibberish.
open to any interpretation by the listener.
i bet all the fools taken in by him are still waiting on their mortgage payments, gas money and unicorns.
his delivery is like a carny man.
With due respect, one report lists over 150 separate incidents of violence, names 30 people of interest, documents the names of a dozen groups linked to violent acts, provides pages of tactics and ideology, and provides multiple pages of references and documentation.
The other report explicitly says there is no known active threat from rightwing extremists, but speculates that the political climate might create one.
And you think the reports are synonymous, and that I'm delusional? OK. . .
For the record, I'm not denying that there are right-wing extremists.. . .of course there are. . ., I'm just saying the "right wing" report is highly speculative and poorly documented. Forgetting the one about the RNC for the moment, if you accept the other two at face value, you have to conclude that ecoterrorism is a far greater threat.
The (U//FOUO) markings on the eco-terrorist threat assessment were placed on the document by someone not familiar with the handling of sensitive documents.
How do I know? The (U//FOUO) paragraph markings are at the the end of the paragraphs instead of at the beginning. Only someone who is ignorant of how to mark sensitive documents would place the paragraph markings at the end of the paragraphs. In fact, this is the first time I have ever seen a sensitive document with the paragraph markings at the end of the paragraph. Strange.
A trivial matter perhaps...but why go to the trouble of marking a document (U//FOUO) when the original was apparently not?
Youth for Western Civilization will educate, organize and train activists on campuses across the nation to create a culture that will promote the survival of Western Civilization and pride in Western heritage. This movement is focused on the support of Western history, identity, high culture, and pride and opposition to radical multiculturalism, political correctness, racial preferences, mass immigration, and socialism.
If YWC were not a "White Pride" organization, I would think they would be more careful not to sound like one.
You can call me Assistant Junior Field Representative of the Southern Poverty Law Center if you want to.

I fit the criteria, because I've been stockpiling weapons and ammunition (like a gazillion other people who think they simply won't be available in the medium-term).
Note that right wing extremists can operate either as groups or as "lone wolves".

Damn. I sold off my herd of swine in a panic - I'm such an idiot.
My nephew is in the National Guard, an officer, leaving college and going to Afghanistan. He is a great kid, smart, level headed. He said that in basic training the quality of the recruits was less than dazzling and many he didn't trust with a weapon. I think we see the word right wing, know that's us in a way, and think the report is aimed at us. We don't see the losers, skinheads, tattooed miscreants, and other just plain drop dead stupids that get into these programs. We see the best of the best. Not the bottom of the barrel.
The difference is that THESE reports contain information related to specific threats.
Names are named, and tactics and incidents are described explicitly.
The "right wing extremist" report contains a lot of speculation and hot air, and the difference is like night and day.
Just look at the two reports.
The Right Wing Extremist report specifically mentions Christian Identity organizations, white supremacist groups, militias, and anti-government conspiracy theorists who fear the "NWO" and a "cabal of Jewish financial elites” are controlling the country.
Does it need to include a list of specific list of organizations and individuals?
Charles, you miss the point. Reports on the threat posed by left wing extremists identified specific groups with a history of violence and who were making clear their intention of committing violence in the future. The first sentence of the report on right wing extremism should have been the last, because it said clearly that there were no known threats. The right wing threat just went on from there to say that it's possible, which of course, it is. And after that it was all speculation rather than intelligence. I could sit here and right a report claiming that Barack Obama might be planning to launch space based mind control weapons.
If only we had listened to Dennis Kucinich.

The first sentence reads "The DHS/Office of Intelligence and Analysis has no specific information that domestic rightwing terrorists are currently planning acts of violence"
"No specific information" does not equate to "no threat".
The threat is very real.
This report wasn't created by the White House Press Office, it was created by the DHL. They're doing their job. It's an internal document.
Its not as virulent as we thought. No Americans have died at this point
The more it passes from person to person, the more easily it will pass in the future. No one knows how it is going to mutate. It could be mild on it's first pass around the planet, and come back with a vengeance.
It's receiving a lot of attention by WHO and CDC because it is an entirely new strain.
This report wasn't created by the White House Press Office, it was created by the DHL. They're doing their job. It's an internal document.
An internal document? Then why does it say this at the bottom of page 2 (boldface is mine)?

I hate to be captain obvious here, The furor over the right wing extremist memo was that it was produced by the new administration. The 2 left wing extremist memo's that have been leaked to show that DHS is looking at them are from 2008 which means that they were created by the Bush administration.
The Right wing extremist memo is dated April 7th 2009, I checked it in the link provided in response #84
I had no doubt that DHS has left wing extremist memo's laying around from the Bush administration.
The question is have any been done since the new administration has taken over?
I looked through both of those reports and didn't see any mention of the categorical grouping of "left wing" extremists ... I'll give you a 6/10 for making me look though :)
I don't have any objections to the term "Right Wing Extremist" as long as the term "Islamic Terrorist" is accepted ... but it's not and that's what irks me about this report. You can't deny the hypocrisy here.

I think (Abbey Road is) the best engineered, best mastered rock and roll album ever produced...except that I take exception to stereo placement. -- From "Frank Zappa talks about Faves, Raves, and composers in their g raves" - some English publication, I think. (2 & 3 from the book, "The Lives and Times of Frank Zappa and the Mothers", some Brit thing again (got it at Blue Meanie Imports in San Diego fifteen years ago.)
