is there anyone else out there who is looking forward to seeing how the UAW runs an auto company when they are also in the management position? unions have always taken, taken, and taken some more. But now that they are also responsible for the bottom line, they will be in for a rude awakening. And the repubs need to make sure that the President does not just keep pouring our tax $$ into a company if the UAW shows it is not capable of making a profit.
I think in a way, Obama may be giving the union some rope to hang itself with. But the Repubs need to hold his feet to the fire and make sure he doesn't just keep subsidizing UAW sloth if they can't make a profit.
I am going to be watching this very closely.

Taliban terror holds 2,000 villagers as human shields
Yesterday, as Pakistani forces stepped up their campaign to retake territory in the districts of Buner, Dir and Swat, it emerged that in one Taliban-controlled village, Pir Baba in Buner, the militants were holding 2,000 people as human shields in case the army attacked.Elsewhere the Taliban appeared to be relying on kidnapping to extort funds and intimidate the population. Many of their victims have been members of rich families.
“Kidnapping has become routine in our village. Armed Taliban were picking up people and then demanding a huge ransom for their release,” said an elderly refugee now living with his family in a tent in Timergara, a town in Dir.

Two American soldiers shot dead by uniformed Iraqi: US
Two American soldiers were shot dead and three more were wounded on Saturday when an Iraqi wearing army uniform opened fire on them south of the northern town of Mosul, the US military said.
"According to initial reports, an individual dressed in an Iraqi army uniform fired on the Coalition forces and was killed in the incident" around 20 kilometres (12 miles) south of Mosul, the statement said.It called the incident "a small arms fire attack at a combat outpost."
A Mosul police officer identified the assailant as Hassan al-Dulaimi, a soldier who also served as the imam of a mosque at an Iraqi army training centre south of the city, the capital of Nineveh province.
NBC also just reported that he's a Muslim cleric.

There is a LOT going on lately, and I see it all as a grab to a soft nationalization of American businesses. This stuff with the UAW is simply a way for the UAW to be TOTALLY in debt to the administration. They are not going to be able to make a move without being scrutinized by the government.
These "test" (I forgot what the administration is calling them) of 19 major banks, telling the banks if the GOVERNMENT thinks that they are undercapitalized. Since when does the government TELL a private industry if they should or should not have more operating funds.
The administration refusing paybacks of TARP money. What the fuck is that all about. It's about keeping the business under the thumb of the government.
The government involving itself with the Chrysler bankruptcy and arranging a sale to Fiat. How does that work? And what is Fiat/Chrysler going to owe the government after that. Is Obama going to force them to make a certain kind of car.
All this and more is unprecedented. It's pure SS (Soft Socialism). There's some deep shit coming down here, and who is trying to stop it. Do you hear any outrage from Republican politicians. A big Noooooooo on that.

One of the core problems is that there's been an unhealthy relationship between CEO's, shareholders and unions in corporate America. Some banks have been allowed to return TARP money. Others are going to have to raise more capital first. The Reason why Obama is refusing to let some banks pay is because the CEO's might want to get back to collecting their outrageous salaries while running their companies into the ground. In some cases they aren't really concerned with making a profit for the company. They're just milking the company for personal gain. Unfortunately we need the banks. Our economy can't function without them.
The car companies can fail and the country would survive just fine. The banks' survival is essential.

Is Obama going to force them to make a certain kind of car.

is there anyone else out there who is looking forward to seeing how the UAW runs an auto company when they are also in the management position? unions have always taken, taken, and taken some more.
Hopefully they can do that.

Yep.I couldn't believe the retirement packages the UAW got. 80% of their pay, full medical. I would say that CEO's have been detached from reality for a while now. It used to be if you ran a company off a cliff, you went over-board with it. Your pay was tied to your performance. Somewhere along the way, these fatcats decided that it did not matter how the company was doing, what matter most was that they all got huge-ass salaries.
I am all in favor of people making money. I am just a little amazed that these guys get so much reward when the companies they are running are failing. I own a small business, if I do a bad job, I do not get a paycheck, let alone an obscenely inappropriate one.
I think alot of these guys are turning the TARP money back for the reason you list....they want to continue to plunder without interference. Too many strings tied to the government money.

Was that a recluse bite?
No....Recluses inject you with a blood poison and you get very sick very fast. Mine was thought to be a wolf spider which is not poisonous but it got infected. People worry about poisonous spiders like recluses and black widows but all spiders bite and many non poisonous ones have proteins in their bite so while not a blood poison that will make you sick or die, they can keep the tissue surrounding the bite from healing and thus risk of infection is higher. The fact that you took him right it, probably eliminates this worry completely in that they would have cleaned it and put antibiotics on it. Mine happened while playing flag football in a meadow and failed to tell anyone about it for several days until it was a big ugly mess. My mother still reminds me of this and I am 53 years old.

re: #59 FurryOldGuyJeans
You think the union leaders really give a crap about the workers they are supposed to represent? They are only concerned about staying in power.
We sure are stating the obvious, ain't we?
Good afternoon, Lizards.
As things are shaking out, I expect Chrysler (what's left of it) to go full chapter 13 within 18 months at the most, and if GM is forced to eat a similar crap sandwich by The One they'll do likewise.
The basic "deal" is that with UAW running Chrysler, the company's first priority is to maintain all union contract obligations. That means pay union wages (including the increasing number of "Job Bank Boys"- who are available for Rent-A-Mob duty as the Democratic Party requires them), pay all retiree benefits, etc..
Whether they actually make sales of their cars or not.
The question of "If the company can't sell what it makes, what will it pay the union with?" has simply not been asked. And "taxpayers' money" isn't the answer. Simply put, every time more money is taken as taxes and given to the UAW Chrysler as a "bailout", that's that much less available for the purchase of the company's wares. The result is that the company will either have to cut prices and raise production (unlikely given the available resources), or try to make a killing on every single car (by raising the price per unit).
The latter is the method most often seen in Europe. The inevitable result is a decreasing number of available wares (the cars) that are increasingly expensive, being "chased" by fewer and fewer buyers (because fewer people have the available discretionary income to buy them). It's commonly called "boutique commerce" in "intellectual" circles, and is favored because then the possession of the product becomes a privilege of the well-to-do and "connected", and thus a mark of social distinction.
There's also a term for this in macroeconomics. It's called stagflation. It's what the U.S. got hit with under Jimmy Carter. (Also known as an "economic death spiral" that we barely pulled out of in time.)
The "Progressive" crowd have never learned the basic lesson of socialism. That being "If the cow doesn't give milk, shooting it doesn't improve matters".
Chrysler is officially a dead cow. The UAW and The One's minions, good little socialists all, just haven't realized it yet. (Well, except maybe for some of the loopier "Gaia-worshipers" who are probably high-fiving each other right now, and drawing a bead on GM.)
On the plus side, I expect reality to set in with a vengeance right about mid-October of 2010. It will be interesting to see exactly how The One's new press secretary tries to spin it- and what his or her RPM will be.
/I expect Gibbs to be gone about mid-summer of this year- and no NCIS jokes, I'm not talkin' about Jethro.
cheers
eon

That is just crazy.
Tell me about - Hubby works for a small company that can't afford insurance so we are self insured. No wonder so many younger people opt not to be insured and then utilize walk in medical clinics for heatlh care. They gamble though that they don't get in an accident or be diagnosed with anything worse than a cold or virus.

re: #13 _RememberTonyC
is there anyone else out there who is looking forward to seeing how the UAW runs an auto company when they are also in the management position? unions have always taken, taken, and taken some more.
RTC -
Unions on the Board of Directors of Auto Companies is the norm in Europe. Of itself, Not a Problem. I DO quibble about the share the UAW got of Chrysler - TOO MUCH in my view - a political rather than economic solution for sure.
Put that all to one side. My question is - what Chrysler Product would YOU willingly and voluntarily buy today? For my needs, there are NONE, for my wants, the Challenger, 300C and Ram Pickup could work. Not enough, I think, to keep an auto company in business. Unless there is a world beater in the pipeline or the FIAT portfolio - seems to me we are merely prolonging the agony of a dying patient. I say this with the utmost sorrow being ex-UAW and a "Mo-Par" fan.

Boy do I agree with you on this. I am on a local school board and we just got word that the Governor of Texas is going to have a conference call with all districts on Monday and tell us that we have ONE case of H1N1 in our district we have to close for 10 days. For us this is very bad because we already lost 10 school days due to Hurricane Ike. So far no cases in our district but I guess once your elected officials wig out, you can't do anything else but follow their lead or else the litigation chances become too painful

Alas, "Never let a good crisis go to waste" seems to be the motto of this administration. This country has changed so dramatically in such a short period of time, it's breathtaking. I fear that if this keeps up apace, we may well not recognize this country before it's over.
The Republican passivity in the face of all of this is very disheartening, they seem neutered and unwilling to assume the role of the Loyal Opposition. When will someone stand up and confront this madness?
The Repubs just don't have the numbers in congress to control it. I would like to hear more verbal rebuttals from the Repubs, though.

Hedge funds and investment managers were irate at Obama’s description of them as “speculators” who were “refusing to sacrifice like everyone else” and who wanted “to hold out for the prospect of an unjustified taxpayer-funded bailout.”
“Some of the characterizations that were used … to refer to us as speculators or to say we’re looking for a bailout is really unfair,” said one executive who spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the matter. “What we’re looking for is a reasonable payout on the value of the debt … more in line with what unions and Fiat were getting.”
George Schultze, managing member of the hedge fund Schultze Asset Management, a Chrysler bondholder, said, “We are simply seeking to enforce our bargained-for rights under well-settled law.”
“Hopefully, the bankruptcy process will help refocus on this issue rather than on pointing fingers at lenders.”

All I know about economics is free markets good, government control bad.
Start with reading up on the CRA
Then read up on Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac
Add in a little ACORN and some Barney Frank and Chris Dodd
And finally, some SubPrime Mortgage Crisis
And there you are.
It's all Wiki, so check the facts.
In a nutshell. They passed the CRA so more people could own a home. The problem is they gave loans to people that could not afford them. Then, you add in groups like ACORN that threatened banks to make these loans. Added to that, powerful Democrats (and some Republicans too) did all they could to encourage these loans. Most of them ended up under the control of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. They then packaged up these loans into instruments and sold them off to other banks. When the housing market started booming, the loans did well....paid out high rates of return. When the bubble finally popped.....it took entire banks and investment houses down with it.
Good intentions, wrapped up with suspect lending, mixed with partisan politics, aided by a housing boom and all played out by banks and investment companies looking to make a killing. Then, reality set in and the entire house of cards collapsed.
The car companies are a different story. They are slaves to their former workers. Every car rolling off the assembly lines in Detroit and other places has almost $2000 built in to pay the healthcare and retirement of workers that are not even there any longer. The Unions asked for too much, the car companies gave it to them, and then could not produce the vehicles necessary to compete. That was a fantasy world too.....unsustainable
I think that is what happened. Someone with actual financial knowledge might know better.....

I'm with you in the gov't stress tests being ridiculous, but actually there are plenty of laws on the books about capital vs loans vs banking reserve already. The Fed adjusts some of these, and individual states have laws as well for banks licensed in those states. Even mortgage co's have to have license, so the controls are already there. After this last black swan banks are well ahead of the Feds in doing their own stress testing. The market also takes care of those who don't reasonably follow basic balance sheet standards.

I'll have to look at it sometime. For the past few months I have really wanted to pin the whole thing on Democrats, but I just can't. There was too much going on. Actually, it was both. Early saltpeter refiners (or "petermen" as they were called- hold the jokes, please) often looked in caves for raw material, courtesy of bats, rabbits, etc. Not to mention the usual procedure of forking over dunghills, digging up abandoned privies and disused cesspits, etc.
In 1670 a gentleman named Henry Stubbs mentioned a cave in the Apennine "in which Millions of Owles did lodge themselves, their dung had been accumulating there for many centuries of years." Mining thwe guano for its saltpeter produced an "inestimable summe of money". Ariound the same time, the bodies of soldiers hastily buried in caves after a battle near Moscow proved a rich source ogf saltpeter, which was fashioned into new powder to facilitate the deaths of other men, a macabre form of recycling.

I say this with the utmost sorrow being ex-UAW and a "Mo-Par" fan.-S-

Mine prefers option number two.
She's a Maine Coon and the 'howling' would anyways be very subdued.
Mine does both, being the roof kitty she is.
Found on the roof of the two-story apartment building I was living in at the time, in the midst of for even Fresno CA a major downpour. "Fat and happy" is still with me after 3 moves and 2 states, never figured out why.

I have a prediction to offer: Islamophobia will be saturating headlines soon.
Dalia Mogahed: President Obama Advisor
Sunday April 26, 2009
Earlier this month, Dalia Mogahed was appointed by President Obama to serve on the Advisory Council on Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships. In this position, Ms. Mogahed advises the President about the opinions, values, perceptions, attitudes, and desires of more than 1 billion Muslims worldwide. Learn more about this White House advisor's work experience, published writing, and personal background.
A billion people will have official representation in the Executive Branch? Sounds like it, sort of.
Mugahed will keep her full time job at Gallup while serving as an advisor.
Qualified
Mogahed’s appointment comes at a critical time given the rising tide of Islamophobia in the media and within some academic circles.
“I am very happy that Dalia was asked to be part of this advisory group because she represents a unique position,” Jihad Saleh Williams, from Congressional Muslim Staffers Association, told AlArabiya.net.
[snip]In 2008, she co-authored woth [sic] John L. Esposito “Who speaks on behalf of Islam? What a Billion Muslims Really Think,” the largest and most comprehensive study of the Muslim public opinion around the world.
[snip]
Esposito is Director of the Prince Alwaleed Center for Muslim-Christian Understanding. The Center was founded in 1993 (year of the first bombing of the WTC, coincidentally), by agreement between Georgetown U and an NGO in Geneva, but did not carry Alwaleed's name until 2005, when the Prince provided significant funding to both Harvard and Georgetown U.
In 2001, Prince Alwaleed had offered a $10M check to NYC for rebuilding after 9-11, but the offer was accompanied by talk of the attack really being America's fault, by reason of unjust policies. Guliani returned the check.
Percy Sutton's revelation about being aproached by Dr Khalid Al-Mansour, to promote BHO's admission to Harvard and appointment as President of the Harvard Law Review is not so well known. Among other things, Al-Mansour has served as the principal advisor to Prince Alwaleed.
How cozy.

Does anyone know of a source or site like "The Current Mess for Dummies" where I can start from scratch and learn about the GM-Chrysler-hedge funds-toxic assets-TARP-Federal Reserve-Chapter 11-Chapter 7-bond holders-UAW-pension funds-high finance- bank nationalizing whole thing? All I know about economics is free markets good, government control bad.
There are several possibilities online. This American Life has done several broadcasts on the topic. You might listen to the two at the links below and check their site for others. Or google "this american life financial crisis".
Another Frightening about the Economy
CNBC did a very comprehensive report called House of Cards, which you can watch online (or possibly they are still playing it from time to time), and there's a Frontline report called Inside the Meltdown, also online.
You might also be interested in following the Planet Money blog, which has dealt w/ both the financial crisis and the problems of the auto companies. See, particularly, the links on the lower right, including one called "Understanding the Crisis".

OK, Got The Program, '04's were NOT UGLY, like the current ones are. If you can afford it, buy her a GMC Acadia or Chevrolet Traverse. At a given point, Moms would prefer to NOT be seen as Moms - Rather as somewhat older desirable women. Caravans and T&C's are the ultimate "Mom-Mobiles." Trust me, if you can do it, your and her life together will improve. My Boss just went through this situation, he could afford it, things are better now. that is all.

Thanks for the advice ... She wants one of those half car/half truck things ... but the budget is tight. I drive a 2005 Caddy CTS, which she loves. I love it too. I Understand the "tight budget" - Have BEEN on one for much of my life. Simi is OK driving a 7-year old Ford Focus 5-speed manual when she needs to. Your wife apparently expects more. Your CTS is a great car for its time. My advice is, give her SOMETHING that is NOT a Mom-Mobile. She is still, in her mind, the Woman who won you. Why WOULD you say NO to that idea?

I'm watching a Dateline NBC rerun on a case of a schizophrenic named Michael Goldstein who pushed a young woman under a subway train back in 1999. The guy was in and out of the mental health system in NYC for a decade before that, and asked for years to be placed in a residential program....it's pretty informative aside from the fact that they just glossed over the fact that it was a Carter administration program that shuttered many of the inpatient mental health hospitals in the late 1970s.
"compassion" my ass.
they interviewed a guy who used to be in charge of the NYC mental health dept, and his excuse sounded way too much like something Obama has said--his diagnosis of the problem was that there isn't enough sharing of medical records among hospitals and that's why he wasn't in inpatient care.
the man repeatedly assaulted people and went to ERs and asked/begged them to put him in a residential mental health hospital, but there wasn't ever space.

Tony, Ford makes a cool crossover and for some reason they brought back the Taurus name for it. Ford is going to have a new Taurus SHO in 2010. That's a cool car, but still big enough to be an easy transition from a minivan.

re: #428 funky chicken
argh, not Dateline...I thought it was
anyway, dumb liberal end to the story. the family sued the hospitals that were forced to discharge the guy over and over again because the state/city didn't have any residential places
oh well, bankrupt the hospitals. that'll fix the problem.

Understand that waterboarding is considered torture by some.
Quoting the NYT: "The 2005 memo also says that the C.I.A. used waterboarding 183 times in March 2003 against Khalid Shaikh Mohammed, the self-described planner of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks."
Regarding 911 - Wikipedia says: "Excluding the 19 hijackers, 2,974 people died in the attacks."
So, giving the planner of 911 credit for his 19 friends - we're still 2,791 short.
As a nation we've developed a real problem identifying our real enemies and an even more serious problem of dealing with them effectively.

Try "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" first. It's probably Thompson's best work. It's short, too.
The movie totally sucked. If you've seen it, don't judge the book by it.
