Glenn Beck Hosts Ron Paul Tea Party Supporters

It seems to me the Libertarians have plenty of common sense to add to the discussion, the tea parties were a blow back from an administration willing to further expand executive and government powers. Every movement has its nutty members. Focusing on them is more distraction than helpful, It will be the libertarian values that revive the Republicans if they have the sense.

Well, what do you expect from Glenn Beck? But I'll tell you, you're chasing a red herring if you think the Tea Party thing is somehow a Paulian movement. Why do you persist in thinking that only fringe types are concerned about the direction Obama and Congress are currently taking, and looking for a way to make that known? They're trying to cram socialism down our throats and create an incomprehensible level of public debt in the process. Is objecting to that somehow flaky?

There are some libertarian values that hold appeal to me. There's no way that I could ever associate myself with the idiocy of the Paul movement. Perhaps if they had attached themselves ot someone that appeared sane, their message would resonate with the people. Now, they are a laughingstock to all but their echo chamber.
So there you go, rightwingconspirator, there's the voice of someone who is disgusted with the Republican brand. I'm up for grabs. But you follow a nut.

Good God. I left the GOP back around 1990 when the Operation Rescue freaks took over the party in KS. I'm glad W won and would have voted for him if I'd known that Al Gore was and is crazy.
But the GOP has gone off the rails nationally, just like they did in KS and MO back when I was in college. It's like deja vu, or watching a train wreck in slow motion.

How about the part where he
1) called for abolition of many federal institutions including the FBI and DEA,
2) called for the repeal of the federal income tax
3) called for the abolition of all social security
3) end the war on drugs

Going to be completely honest here--Meghan McCain would have to really shine and be brilliant for me to want to see her in public office.
I feel we have too many political dynasties now. America was always supposed to be about the Abraham Lincolns, the Andrew Jacksons, and so on. Theses men (or women) were leaders just from their abilities, not because of their family name. The Adamses were supposed to be a fluke, not the norm.
If a child of a politician has the brilliance to succeed politically (Mitt Romney) then great, but we are America, where you are supposed to succeed on your own merits.

We block Fox news too.
The first time I was old enough to vote I voted for Harry Browne for president, most because of the drug legalization issues but got into the general pro-liberty concept of the libertarian party. I was young and stupid and he was better than Bill Clinton. I was into the Ron Paul thing for about two weeks then I figured out who he was (racist, anti-choice, black helicopter freak, etc). I still consider myself more a left libertarian than anything else. I'm fine with state run social services but like them as decentralized as possible, etc.
I can halfway relate to the Ron Paul crowd and halfway think they are on another planet.
I'm one of about 4 people on earth who really got behind Mike Gravel.

...for any Paulians out there...just look beyond the part where Ron Paul criticized the Republican Party as having abandoned its principles of limited constitutional government and you will quickly see how crazy he is.
How about the part where he
1) called for abolition of many federal institutions including the FBI and DEA,
2) called for the repeal of the federal income tax
3) called for the abolition of all social security
3) end the war on drugsSounds a little like anarchy to me, not liberty.
And yet he is a pretty rabid pro-lifer. Cognitive dissonance much?

re: #106 sjmiller
Here's something for you to read. Gary Hubbell's "Angry White Man" article came after this one:
"The rhetoric when it came to Jews was little better. The newsletters display an obsession with Israel; no other country is mentioned more often in the editions I saw, or with more vitriol. A 1987 issue of Paul's Investment Letter called Israel "an aggressive, national socialist state," and a 1990 newsletter discussed the "tens of thousands of well-placed friends of Israel in all countries who are willing to wok [sic] for the Mossad in their area of expertise." Of the 1993 World Trade Center bombing, a newsletter said, "Whether it was a setup by the Israeli Mossad, as a Jewish friend of mine suspects, or was truly a retaliation by the Islamic fundamentalists, matters little."
And anti-government paranoia here:
"Paul's newsletters didn't just contain bigotry. They also contained paranoia--specifically, the brand of anti-government paranoia that festered among right-wing militia groups during the 1980s and '90s. Indeed, the newsletters seemed to hint that armed revolution against the federal government would be justified. In January 1995, three months before right-wing militants bombed the Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City, a newsletter listed "Ten Militia Commandments," describing "the 1,500 local militias now training to defend liberty" as "one of the most encouraging developments in America." It warned militia members that they were "possibly under BATF [Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms] or other totalitarian federal surveillance" and printed bits of advice from the Sons of Liberty, an anti-government militia based in Alabama--among them, "You can't kill a Hydra by cutting off its head," "Keep the group size down," "Keep quiet and you're harder to find," "Leave no clues," "Avoid the phone as much as possible," and "Don't fire unless fired upon, but if they mean to have a war, let it begin here.""

They aren't represented by him, he's just co-opted their name. Ron Paul is the GOP's resident troll. Michael Steele needs to take a lesson from Charles and give Luap Nor a taste of the Ban Stick.
I'm not sure I agree. He has historical ties to the Libertarian Party, being their presidential candidate in 1988. Even though he rejoined the Republican Party, the Texas LP does not field candidates in TX-14 out of deference. I think he does represent the libertarian position to a lot of people. That having been said, I don't feel Ron Paul represents me very well at all. I consider myself libertarian (or at least I have strong leanings) but I can't stomach Paul on science (he's a creationist) or foreign policy (I'm a hawk and pro-Israel).

Here's a repost of buzzsawmonkey's classic tune for trolls like sjmiller:
A cautionary tale, from earlier:
Flounce to the Exit
--to the tune of "Waltzing Mathilda"
Once a jolly moby registered to comment here
Waited and lurked upon threads patiently
And he sang as he watched and waited for his exit cue,
"You'll see me flounce to the exit shortly."
"Flounce to the exit
Flounce to the exit
I'm going to flounce to the exit shortly"
And he sang as he watched and waited for his exit cue,
"You'll see me flounce to the exit shortly."
Up came a thread that took apart creationists
Up came a thread debunking conspiracies
And he sang as his comments became more and more abusive,
"You'll see me flounce to the exit shortly."
"Flounce to the exit
Flounce to the exit
I'm going to flounce to the exit shortly"
And he sang as his comments became more and more abusive,
"You'll see me flounce to the exit shortly."
Up came Charles Johnson with the banning stick in hand
Flanked on his side by formidable Stinky
"May I suggest that you moderate your posting style?
Else I will show you the exit shortly."
"Show you the exit
Show you the exit
Else I will show you the exit shortly
May I suggest that you moderate your posting style?
Else I will show you the exit shortly."
Up reared the moby, and ripped out a parting screed
"Here's what I think--I dare you to ban me!"
But not even a ghost of his words remains on the board
After he flounced to the exit shortly
Flounced to the exit
Flounced to the exit
Leaving a rant behind for all to see
But not even a ghost of his words remains on the board
After he flounced to the exit shortly

Article 12, Paragraph 4: The President shall have the right, through the executive branch, to spend more money than the 43rd occupant of the office of the Presidency. This right shall not be abridged by the people, the several states, the Legislative branch, or the Judicial branch.

WTF people? This blog is in love with the bashing of creationists and Ron Paul supporters, but the minute someone says something that is apparently true (if it was not, I would not have got those intellectual responses) all hell breaks loose. Listen . . . I do not wish to get into a tit-tat (this is a great site), but it seems that people who support little r conservationism are some kind of wing nut. Personally, I support the tea parties because they do serve a purpose -- to show the unconstitutional spending and taking over private business. If someone can show me where the president has the executive power (based on the Constitution) to nationalize private businesses and spend worse than Bush please let me know.
It's TIT FOR TAT.

Singer Ayman Udas ‘shot by her brothers for TV sin’
A RISING musical star was allegedly shot dead by her own brothers in the conservative city of Peshawar in Pakistan last week after she had appeared on television.
The murder of Ayman Udas, who was in her early thirties and newly married, has shocked the city’s artistic community because it symbolises a backlash against women and cultural freedom in an area that is increasingly dominated by Islamic funda-mentalists.
As a singer and song writer in her native Pashto, the language of the tribal areas and the NorthWest Frontier province, Udas frequently performed on PTV, the state-run channel.
She won considerable acclaim for her songs but had become a musician in the face of bitter opposition from her family, who believed it was sinful for a woman to perform on television.
Ashamed of her growing popularity her two brothers are reported to have entered her flat last week while her husband was out and fired three bullets into her chest. Neither has been caught.

Speaking of the RoP...look in your local paper tomorrow...
Wake County residents in three ZIP codes will find a DVD about Islam bundled in their issues of The News & Observer today, as Muslim residents initiate a public relations effort to counteract a controversial DVD distributed in the paper in September.
Today's DVD,"The Fog is Lifting: Islam in Brief," was produced by an Egyptian nonprofit group intent on explaining Islam to non-Muslims. It offers an orthodox defense of Islamic precepts and theology without engaging in issues such as politics or terrorism.

re: #115 Conservative Moonbat
It seems like there would be a place somewhere between the two parties for non-insane little-l libertarians.
I feel a quite out of place as well. I consider myself a liberal. I don't identify with the Democrats because they are too socialist. I identify more strongly with the fiscal conservatives in the Republican party, but the GOP seems more strongly influenced by the social conservatives today. And the Libertarian Party is a third-party non-factor.
There are three great political traditions in the United States. Originating in New England, the first political tradition views the government as a sacred trust. The second great political tradition views the government as defender of virtue, and has its roots in the Antibellum south. The third great tradition views the government as necessary evil, and is most closely associated with the Old West.
Over time the dominant political parties have represented all three traditions to various extents. Right now, the Democrats have adopted the mantle of sacred trust, as protectors of the weak and bringers of economic security. The social conservatives in the Republican Party have a strong dose of the defender of virtue viewpoint, as advocates for traditional morality and order. Neither major party is strongly influenced by limited government skepticism at the moment.
I'm hoping someone like me has a place here. I'm a fiscal conservative and social liberal. I don't consider myself a fringe person. My views on particular issues aren't themselves extreme. If I am pro-choice, then I must necessarily be for gun control? No, of course not.
Now if you say "libertarian" people think Ron Paul, and that means you're a creationist anti-Zionist, or something or other. I cringe.

Sorry, but that is total crap. She was whining like a little brat about how her neighbor blocked FNC from his/her own damn tv in his/her own damn home.
It has nothing to do with limiting freedom, her neighbor has the right to watch or block whatever channels he/she damn well pleases, and the whiny brat has a problem with that.

Seriously though - shoot one with the checkering and one without, and try the difference? I was surprised at the smoothness of the grip on my Colt Series 70 when I picked it up from the FFL. When Rome fell it was another few hundred years before the Byzantines came down. There will be places where some degree of liberty holds sway, perhaps, but it will be liberty defended by hard men and women who will do what is necessary to survive. How far and how fast will things like international trade fall? We are having difficulty with the Barbary Pirates now. What happens if the United States Navy no longer patrol the seas? There isn't anyone else to do it. The Russians can't do it, the Europeans are worse.
America is the fuel that drives the global economy. What happens to China if our economy goes in the shitter? They can't repossess the American southwest in return for the paper promises they have from us. If we get hit bad enough by inflation, all the trillions Obama just borrowed won't be worth anything.
Progress isn't a given. America has been exceptional for more than a hundred years. We've lead in medicine, technology, industry. Who can take our place?
977 years passed from the Fall of the Western Empire to Odoacar until Constantinople fell to the Turks. Be of good cheer. The light has not gone out from the world.

That's disturbing. I don't think people can truly imagine what it would be like if modern society broke down to the extent that the western Roman Empire did after 476. There are so many self-interested parties that dominate government, I can't imagine it would cease functioning entirely, if only because they refuse to give up power. I could imagine holes in the level of goods and services we're accustomed to. The postal service might disappear, leaving a patchwork of private delivery services. Telecommunications could become spotty and medical care might be hit or miss in some parts of the country. In less stable countries, things might deteriorate to a Somali level.
I'm giving myself nightmares here.

You know when drunks get thrown out of a bar and are banned from going back there? They usually tend to forget about it and just move on to some other bar that'll still have them. They don't generally keep hanging around outside that bar, trying on disguises in an attempt to get back in again while screaming about their 'rights' etc. And of course, yelling about how much they never liked that bar anyway. We're actually coming up on the 556th anniversary of the fall of Constantinople on May 29th. It was the culmination of centuries of appeasing Islamic aggression, which the Romans (as they continued to call themselves) were unable to confront due to internal moral decay. Nah. I just want to... you know, accessorize. (Let's face it, pistols are like purses for gun nuts.)

Haven't seen those, but I like the feel of the standard 30 LPI checkering that Kimber does on some of its other pistols (and inexplicably, doesn't do on it the Kimber Warrior)>
Have you got tritium sights?
Those come standard on the Warrior. It was definitely something I thought was a good idea.

Unless I missed something, didn't only one of them explicitly self-identify as a Ron Paul supporter.
I only saw one. The reported guy might have been a Ron Paul supporter, but all he really said was that he wasn't a D or an R. Who knows, the room could've been swarming with 'em.
However, this clip in no way tars the Tea Parties with the brush of Ron Paul. If anything it would be a reflection on Beck. It's his audience, after all. Why should we believe it is a representative sample of Tea Partygoers?

I agree. The audience was hand picked by his show so of course it is not a reflection of the tea parties in general. Those were full of people who showed up on their own.

i just feel that unless garnett has some type of willis reed moment and actually plays(which i highly doubt)that the celtics have nothing to combat dwight howard on the interior AND hedo and rashard finally started hitting their outside shots in the last 2 games against the sixers; i am therfore going with the magic in 7(but, i believe the cavs are going to win the east; then lose to the lakers in the final)
good points! If KG has his Willis Reed moment, it won't happen until the Cavs/Celtics series (if Boston makes it). Orlando is not mentally tough, Stan van Gundy tends to be a bit shaky on the bench, Dwight Howard is too nice, and Boston does have home court. That said, Boston is tired and its front line is depleted. But I think this will finally be the series where Stephon Marbury becomes a legit contributor.

Probably wouldn't be that good for you, either. We had one of these for sale locally here last year. They wanted $24,000 for the whole setup. It sold before I even found out it was on the market (like I could have afforded to do anything about it :-)

Good detail here. Thanks, Iron Fist. I hadn't heard this either.
"This is a big decision. For the first time ever, a federal court has found that the 2nd amendment is indeed incorporated into the Constitution through the 14th amendment. Just as a little background for those of you who are not legal scholars, originally the Bill of Rights were a set of limited rights that only applied to the federal government (for example many states had official state religions). It wasn’t until after the Civil War and the passage of the 14th Amendment that some of the Bill of Rights were eventually “incorporated” into the 14th amendment and applied to states as well as the federal government. Through a hodgepodge of cases, the Supreme Court has recognized most of the rights in the Bill of Rights as “fundamental” rights, and thus states could not limit them. Curiously the 2nd amendment has never been included as one of these fundamental rights, and thus never incorporated (although non-existent rights like the Right to Privacy made the list somehow).
The opinion basically follows the Heller opinion from last year. The Heller opinion invalidated a Washington D.C. ordinance which banned all gun possession in the District. The SCOTUS ruled that this was unconstitutional because gun ownership “necessary to an Anglo-American regime of ordered liberty.” Following this framework, the 9th Circuit has basically said that since this is a fundamental right the 2nd Amendment must be incorporated into the 14th Amendment. Interestingly, the 9th Circuit did not use the Priviliges and Immunities Clause of the 14th Amendment, but by the Due Process Clause. "

That article was pretty lame. I commented on another thread as to its weakness. Nate Silver does not know enough about statistics to understand the difference between correlation and causality. Had Silver run the numbers including other political contributions, he may have found similar correlation. I actually think Obama won the Democrat primary or caucus in most of the top tea party states. Think about that one.
That said, if you think Ron Paul can organize dozens of protests gathering 300,000 plus people, then Ron Paul is much more powerful than the flake most consider him.
I can say there were few Paulians at the Tea Party I attended. I would estimate they were 1/10th of 1% of the total crowd.
Finally, the whole thesis of this thread is weak. One guy said he vote for Ron Paul. Two others had their names given, Michael Jablonski and Gary Hubbell. Searches at Google and OpenSecrets reveal no Paulian connection for Messers Jablonski or Hubbell. If there is evidence, I wish Charles would include it. Otherwise, this is a reach.
The idea that Tea Party attendees = Paulians doesn't add up.

I understand that Charles doesn't trust the tea party movement. I understand his reasons for doing so. I also have heard an extremely common talking point that we shouldn't "focus on the few whakos in the group." My guess is that this is a talking point formulated by someone behind the scenes, and it's been said by enough politicians that it's sticking. That being said, I have heard some encouraging things about the tea party movement.

The fact is that we do agree with these guys when it comes to economics. We do want less government spending, more fiscal responsibility, and less government intervention in the economy. What we don't want is all of the other stuff the Paulians want. Similarly, we agree with the religious right on a lot of issues, but certainly not all, especially not on the teaching of evolution. So, we need to learn how to come to agreements with groups on certain issues without compromising what matters. This is actually really hard, but it's equally important. The crucial element is letting them know the scope of your partnership ahead of time. The republican party CAN be the big tent party, but it needs clear goals that everyone in the tent can agree on, without co-opting crazy goals like resuming the gold standard and teaching creationism as a viable scientific theory.

My guess is that 90% of the people that showed up at the tea parties don't like Paul either and will never vote for him under any circumstances.
Another guess 48% don't like Beck.
One more guess is that 95% of the people that attended the tea parties don't like all the new borrowing and spending and that is why they went.
Hundreds of thousands attended the tea parties that don't like Paul or Beck.
Let's hope they don't get thrown under the free cash bus.

Well, my brother and I both attended tax protests last month and the focus was on... excessive government spending. We still have a right to protest and a right to peaceably assemble and I for one, refuse to impose an ideological litmus test on the personal beliefs of people gathered to protest taxation and spending. We did have one counter protester and no one drove him off or required him to hold the "correct" beliefs. Our local protest was initiated by a registered independent business owner in our town and was attended by republicans, democrats and independents. If there were any paulinians there, they didn't advertise the fact. This wasn't a "Fox News" or Beck, or Paul organized outing. This was about 100 pissed off citizens and voters.
I live in a state and district where my political beliefs are not represented. If you read the papers, and watch the news, you'd think we were all just a bunch of happy Obama supporters perfectly content with the new administration. This was our chance to show our elected reps we're not all onboard the stupid train. My state rep showed up and hung out on the sidelines watching. He's a major Obama supporter and he was not pleased with what he saw. In a district my size, he can't afford to lose democrats and independents.

The truly sad part is that 99.99% of all the people who went to a tea party are NOT Ron "puke" Paul supporters and I would say the majority of that figure doesn't even like the moron and yet this dipwad needs to parade them around like they are model citizens instead of the whackjobs that they are.
I can tell you right now, Ron Paul, nor any of his mind numbed supporters had anything to do with starting these tea parties, their claims to take the credit to the contrary. If anyone deserves the credit. it would be Rick Santelli because he is the one to mentioned it first. I am on several sites that almost simultaneously started to talk about organizing these protests. Personally I don't think anyone supporting Ron Puke has the brains to organize such a thing.
I used to like Glen Beck. What the hell happened? He is not helping the cause by parading these loons on TV.

Phew! Will that suffice, or should I have put more meat on it?
But, seriously. Who thinks the vast majority of the people attending these "Tea Parties" would give a toss about what Ron Paul says beyond economics, liberty, and predatory government? The crowds of Tea Party goers are not and never were gravitating towards Ron Paul. Their paths run parallel on those issues, and only on those issues. Beyond that, Paulians will find out just how much they've overestimated their value, again.

So... bubbasbbq, what are we to make of Alan Keyes as a keynote speaker at the Ft. Wayne tea party:
Are the thousands (probably 2000) of people there cheering Keyes on about 'nirthing? Yes or no.
Keyes was also a speaker at a Pittsburgh Tea Party.
Keyes is every bit as bad as Paul, maybe even worse in some cases.
The net is loaded with videos from the "tea parties", many of which show speakers who, frankly, are marginally sane. Many are just self deceived.
Charles has already posted about several links between some tea party organizers and the Paul supporters.

OK; just watched all 7:19 of that and heard one mention of Ron Paul (and you had to be listening very closely - it went by pretty much in an undertoned passing phrase) - and Beck does not mention him, or his movement, at all. And the mention was as a preface to the basic comment that he (the commenter) was a lot less concerned with personalities - and wanted more discussion of policy.
Racism was mentioned - only in the context of "If you talk about enforcing the borders, you're labeled a racist."
Will admit: the guy who mentioned Ron Paul also talked a bit about the importance of the Constitution - which, concededly, Ron Paul also likes to do. However, I'm not sure that's one thing that I would regard as a negative about Ron Paul.
I assume Charles is a lot more in tune with who supports Ron Paul than I am (maybe he recognizes faces?), but I didn't see it in the 7:19 that was posted here.

That had to have been one of the silliest "studies" I've ever seen...imo, completely bogus. (And, just what in the hell was he attempting to "correlate"? That the amount of a state-wide campaign contribution to Ron Paul correlates with the degree of support for tea parties? If that was the intent, he sure as hell didn't prove it...zero evidence to support that claim...which, btw, is very different from making claims about the composition of a Tea Party group (ie, arguing that most, or a majority of people who attended a Tea Party also support Ron Paul -- if that's what you wanted to do using statistics, you'd have to do a survey of those who attended the Tea Parties...and it wouldn't be a "correlation" study either...lol)
