That’s Not Funny

The Funny thing about Obama … is that there’s nothing funny about Obama.

On his HBO show, “Real Time With Bill Maher,” the comedian routinely makes vicious fun of celebrities, politicians, presidents and even God. But he’s learned that, for much of his audience, Barack Obama is off limits.

Not long after the historic presidential election, Maher joked that Republicans were feeling particularly superstitious: “They say the country is having bad luck because there’s a black cat in the White House.” The studio audience erupted in loud groans and boos — a reaction, Maher observed in a recent interview, that exceeded his often scathing attacks on organized religion.

“Obama is the new God,” quipped Maher of the poorly received dig, which he pointed out pokes at conservatives more than the commander in chief.

Bill Maher couldn't be funny if it bit him in the ass. Obama has lots that funny about him, but of course, it would be highly offensive to Maher's lowbrow brand of "humor".

5 Kragar  Mon, May 4, 2009 12:50:08pm

Perhaps Maher would have more success as a comedian if he were actually funny.

Actually, the article does contain the real reason, but it is buried way down the page:

" Contributing to Obama's kid-glove treatment, too, are the political leanings of many comedy writers. Although it didn't ultimately help Bill Clinton or Jimmy Carter, Winston, who wrote for Leno for six years, argues there's little doubt many joke writers are Democrats.

"You have to remember that most comedy writers on these shows are more liberal than conservative," Winston said. "It was much easier to write comedy when the enemy was the target." "

Obama will fall into the water somehow, and when he does the comedians will be there, said Malcolm Kushner, a scholar of presidential humor who co-created the humor exhibit at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library.

"Everybody thought 9/11 would be the death of comedy, and it wasn't," he said. "It will happen."

What an... interesting analogy.

In my opinion, not good.

52 LC LaWedgie  Mon, May 4, 2009 12:58:27pm

Not funny either:

BANGOR, Maine — A British woman allegedly had an in-flight meal of prescription drugs, wine and liquid soap — before trying to bite the crew of a London-bound jetliner.

Galina Rusanova punched and kicked flight attendants on the Chicago-based United Airlines flight after downing two or three bottles of wine, prescription drugs and liquid soap from the jet's lavatory, prosecutors said.

As the scuffle escalated, Rusanova snapped "like a dog" while trying to bite an attendant, prosecutors said.

The FBI said the Russian-born London resident had gone to Los Angeles to visit a man she met over the Internet and was returning Wednesday when her flight was diverted to Bangor.

Rusanova appeared in U.S. District Court for a detention hearing there Monday, where she's charged with assault and interference with a flight crew.

No one answered the phone at defense lawyer Matthew Erickson's office.

comparing obama to a despot is patently incorrect. to compare him to the socialists that took over britain after ww2, or the socialists that rule europe today is appropriate. to compare his ideas to the ideas of different rulers of argentina is appropriate.

Have GWB in the White House made for easy comedy; they didn't have to think to come up with material. Now, with Obama in, they can't use him as a punching bag, and so they have to think a tiny bit more to even come up with something that deigns to be funny.

Real comedy is really hard. I don't think Bill Cosby developed his material overnight.

re: #20 zombie

Actually, the article does contain the real reason, but it is buried way down the page:

" Contributing to Obama's kid-glove treatment, too, are the political leanings of many comedy writers. Although it didn't ultimately help Bill Clinton or Jimmy Carter, Winston, who wrote for Leno for six years, argues there's little doubt many joke writers are Democrats.

"You have to remember that most comedy writers on these shows are more liberal than conservative," Winston said. "It was much easier to write comedy when the enemy was the target." "

I saw something similar to that several years ago, but no longer have a link to the column. A member of the Writers Guild was quoted, saying something like ... we simply don't know how to write for conservative audiences.

/DAMN, I wish I still had a link to that!

I think that no one is above criticism. Humor, if done well, is a good way of criticizing. It is not only a shame, but a danger, when one cannot criticize the government.

Another of the hallmarks of liberalism is that they are truly humorless when it comes to themselves. Of course they have no problem dishing out contemptious humor on their opponents. And have no problem with the hypocrisy involved in holding both positions simultaneously.

I don't know. The message that Obama and the far left Democratic Party sing, is a siren song for many. It promises reward for little to no effort and has the additional 'benefit' of making the rich pay for their wealth - feeding on the petty vindictivenss and spite of many people. Unfortuiunately that is a tempting call for many but the price it exacts is a long term soul robbing loss of intiative and productivity and risk taking and its corresponding reward - the very traits that has made America a beacon to the world

I'm glad that the newspaper story finally said what has been obvious to most of us for a long time. It is almost painful to watch Leno's monologues these days. He's still peddling lame jokes about Bush's child-like stupidity (yawn) or Clinton's infidelity (bigger yawn). I've yet to hear a single joke about any defect or shortcoming of Obama. Occasionally there's a joke about someone in Obama's cabinet, but never about Obama himself. And speaking of humor, I find a decided lack of it produced by the President. He is singularly unfunny, displaying none of the self-deprecating humor of Bush 43 or Kennedy. Of course his minions laugh uproariously at any comment the great one makes that sounds even vaguely humorous.

It is un-American to not make fun of our politicians.
If I remember correctly, Will Rogers and Mark Twain
did a pretty good job of it. What I do not like is inconsistency.
An example: Whenever another photo of our shirtless
president is on a cover, there needs to be an article with the
headline "See, smoking cigarettes does help weight control!"

A thousand updings...

If you are correct, and he fails, 2010 will be a banner year for the GOP.

I'm not clear on your two points. In your first post you implied that the President's impact on the market is analogous to the impact a cheerleader has on a football team (i.e., little or none) - from which I would infer that neither his success nor his failure would have a major impact on business and the markets. (Using your point that the market was up even in light of the proposal to change the overseas tax code(s).) But, in this post, you imply that if he fails, he's done. Are you saying that a success on his part wouldn't affect the markets, but a failure would?

(Just confused, not at all trying to be sarcastic.)

IMHO this inability to make acceptable jokes about Obama shows a country with seriously deranged priorities. Many of us have lost our connection, or have a very weak connection to the Creator, and some have fastened their HOPE onto men, and institutions where it should not go, and where it cannot be realized. Many want Obama & the government to stand in for the Creator & thus the undeserved solemnity and lack of joking.

It is a very bad sign.

Personally, I don't find Maher funny, and I found his movie "Religulous" particularly bad, being both unfunny, and intellectually dishonest.

Still, all that said, the guy has to make a living, and that means giving his audience what they want.

So I can't blame him for taking the easy way out here. If making fun of Obama means his audience is going to change the channel, then he can't bash Obama.

Chrysler Non-TARP Lenders Object to Auction Plan

The group, calling itself Chrysler’s non-TARP lenders, in reference to the Troubled Assets Relief Program, seeks to block the proposed sale to an alliance led by Fiat SpA, as well as a request by the U.S. automaker for approval of a $4.5 billion Treasury loan to finance the reorganization. The group said secured lenders who agreed to the Fiat deal, such as JPMorgan Chase & Co., Citigroup Inc. and Goldman Sachs Group Inc., were conflicted because they had also accepted TARP funds.

The process is “tainted” because it was dominated by the government, the lenders argued in papers filed today in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Manhattan. The group also said the short period of time given to evaluate the sale was improper and the hearing on bid procedures that began today should be delayed. The judge delayed the hearing until 2:30 p.m. tomorrow, ordering the members of the lender group reveal their identities.

The sale “improperly attempts to extinguish their property rights without their comment,” attorneys for the objecting lenders wrote in court papers. “The sale motion should be denied because it seeks approval of a sale that cannot be approved under the bankruptcy code,” they argued, adding “The court should not permit a patently illegal sales process to go forward.”

Dind, ding, ding, that's a winning argument because it's all true.

I listened to it. It's not just the chord progression, the Coldplay melody is very close to the guitar solo by Satriani.

Granted, sometimes a chord progression will suggest a certain natural melodic pattern, but in this case we have the same timing, suspension of notes, etc.

the Loathsome Brian Eno excuses Palestinian terrorism and blames Israel in a speech at London's Trafalgar Square:

""What we're seeing in Gaza is an experiment in provocation conducted by the Israeli government," he said. "You take one and a half million people, you stuff them into a small space, you deny them food, water, sanitation, medicine, and then act surprised when they get hostile.

"But you want that hostility, because that's the cue for you to act the victim. Israel is pretending to be a victim in a situation in which they are the oppressor.

"It's tragic that a country formed in the ashes of the holocaust should act in this way. It's heartbreaking. Why do the Israelis do it? What's the reason for creating this conflict?

"The reason is that under the cover of it they can continue to build settlements. They can continue to get large grants from the American government. They can continue to steal the homeland of the Palestinians, and continue to make a Warsaw ghetto in the Middle East."

I think you are right & it's not going to change until Obama really pisses off all the rich who are enamored with him. For as long as he holds the rich liberal in thrall, he's safe.
