Why didn't Wilma let Fred back into the house in the closing credits?
23 | zombie Mon, May 4, 2009 2:07:05pm |
Question:
I want to download a free iPhone app.
I've never done this before, so I didn't know how to do it. Turns out one needs to go to the "iTunes" store to download the app.
When I tried, it said I had to "log in" to iTunes with my Apple account. Never done that before either, but I did have an old Apple account for when I ask questions on the Apple tech discussion boards. So I logged in with that account.
But then I get a new screen saying that before I can get a proper iTunes account, I need to give them my credit card info!
Now, I don't want to give them my credit card info, because I'm not actually buying anything. I just want to download a FREE app.
I tried entering random numbers as the credit card info, but it said it wasn't a "valid number," which means they're checking the cards against a database of card numbers.
So my question is: How can I work around this roadblock? Is there any way to download a free iPhone app that doesn't entail giving out one's credit card info?

I'm no expert, but I'm guessing not. When I got my iPod I set up iTunes just to organize my music from CDs, with no intention of ever buying anything. I could not complete the set up without giving them a credit card number. You could probably check the terms of service to see how they use the number and whether they retain it beyond initial verification.

About the valid number, part of any credit card sequence has certain identifiers, so the fact you're using a Visa, MC, or American Express can be determined thru just the number you enter. They don't have to have a list saying whether an account is valid, but the sequence itself says whether the number you enter is actually a card number as opposed to random junk

So my question is: How can I work around this roadblock? Is there any way to download a free iPhone app that doesn't entail giving out one's credit card info?
To the best of my knowledge, no.
The "free app" gag is an example of a "lost leader" ploy- the objective being to acquire information about customers. The fact that they check it against a master list tells me that their primary objective is to build a profile for the purpose of targeted advertising (i.e., they want to know your icome bracket/usual monthly expenditures to determine what you are likely to buy). That's the "innocent" explanation.
Then of course there's the sinister one, in which their acquisition of account information could lead to identity theft, or worse. iTunes, I might add, is a subsidiary of Yahoo!, which is renowned for having some of the worst (i.e., nonfunctional or just plain nonexistent) "security" on the Net. (TIAM; I have a Yahoo! account. I use Firefox for everything but email. Nuff said.)
I'd pass this one by.
/Just IMHO.

They must be Wagner pads. I put a set of Wagner EDGE pads (top of the line) on my truck, and they squeak (with new rotors, too). Plus, after a few high-effort stops, it's fade city. The Ford pads were much better, except that they dusted like crazy, where the Wagners don't.

Do you use your credit card at a restaurant ever? How about to pay for gas? Buy groceries? Your card is just as exposed, in fact more so at those places, then using your credit card at the iTunes store.
Downloading stuff off itunes is great. I resisted for many months even after having an iPhone. I only download free apps and music. Then late one night, probably drunk, I started downloading songs from iTunes and was shocked at how easy and convenient it was. I'm sold on it and have no problems with Apple having my credit card #.

We started discussing it on a previous thread.
It is completely backwards. The Paliterrorists will never accept Israel as a Jewish state as long as Iran is backing them.
All this would do is force Israel to have a terrorist state next door, and Iran would still get nukes.

re: #68 AMER1CAN
Do you use your credit card at a restaurant ever? How about to pay for gas? Buy groceries? Your card is just as exposed, in fact more so at those places, then using your credit card at the iTunes store.
Nope. I only use my credit card in emergencies. I do not use in normal daily transactions. For the very reason you describe.
I don't buy stuff online. Period. It's an eccentricity of mine.
I've never entered my credit card number into my computer, and I never will. (Until Big Brother makes me, at least.)

Your card is indeed "exposed", but the law is VERY MUCH on your side. The issuer has to prove you were negligent with your card, which it's usually not worth their while to do.

I can even admit I was skeptical of the iPhone for many months. I even trash talked it a bit as "just another phone", and I was absolutely dead wrong once I got my own iphone. The only word I would use to describe it is "evolutionary". It's got 1 button for crying out loud! I'm no apple fan but even I can respect an awesome piece of technical ingenuity.

Okay, Goddess. I trust you (maybe). Is there that much difference between the different iphone/ipod makers and services?
Verizon was the cell phone service offered in my area, and they've been wonderful. As FurryOldGuyJeans says above, calls within the same network don't "count" towards your monthly minutes. I've never compared another provider because I've been so pleased with Verizon--their service has been outstanding.
However, iPhones only work with AT&T. Verizon promotes the Blackberry line. I don't need all the bells and whistles the extra bells and whistles cost. I have the Verizon nV--I love the QWERTY keyboard because it's easier to text (which is great for keeping in contact with my kids.)
I use my iPod for music, wifi, alarm clock, calendar, contacts, even a flashlight. It's much lighter , less expensive, and more versatile that the iPaq I used to have (and HP seems to be phasing them out.) The free apps are a lot of fun--I paid for just one so far.

Those are very misleading numbers. A good portion of those phones were part of a buy one get one free deal that's been going on for a long time.
Once could say that of all phones sold, RIM had to give away half of them. That's a bit of a stretch, but they did give away a ton of phones as part of a package deal.
No such deals exists for the iPhone like the 2 for 1 deal being offered on blackberry's.

Well... in the first instance, it'll be your problem, because your account will be drained. That sort of makes it your problem.
In contrast, if I find an errant charge on my credit card bill (which has happened), I'm not actually out any money yet. Not only does the law protect me, but I have practical leverage vis a vis the card issuer; I tell 'em "not my charge, I'm not paying", and right from the get-go the problem is theirs.

As others have pointed out, the number itself is internally self-consistent, which allows things like simple web browser scripts to perform validation. No need to contact the card company.
Here's an explanation of the algorithm used for validation. I haven't examined it in detail, but it might be possible to cook up a "valid" number from this information just to get past the roadblock Apple has set up.
You could also use an expired card, but that would still trace back to you if anyone was really interested.

Agreed. That why I rarely if ever use my debit card, other than at the occasional ATM. if somebody gets the debit card account, they're immmediately into your money. With the credit card, if the number gets stolen, I can dispute it as long as I'm reasonably diligent and review my bill for bogus charges.

I NEVER use my debit card as a true debit card because I do not like the idea of anyone going into my bank aco**** and "debiting" money out of it before I even get to walk out of the store.
Always run it through as credit so you get some protections on your purchase. If you use debit, once that money is gone, it's a lot harder to get it put back. If you put it on credit, you can dispute the charges before the money is taken out. So like you said, credit will give you protection where debit can be quite dangerous.

A quick search with "generating credit card numbers" turns up a host of sites explaining the algorithm for doing this. I don't see anything illegal about it - the numbers generated can't be used for actual purchases, since they aren't tied to an actual account, don't have expiration dates, don't have those security codes on the back, and so on.
Not surprisingly, there are websites that will do all the work for you with a couple of clicks.
