Too Good to Check: Jimmy Carter to Help Harvest Coca Leaves in Bolivia?

Weird • Views: 2,797

Probably a hoax, but you just never know with Jimmy Carter: Jimmy Carter reported to accept coca invitation from Evo Morales.

Globovision of Caracas reports news that we hope is inaccurate, and which will be denied by former President Carter. The Venezuelan television network states that he has accepted an invitation to participate in the cultivation of coca with left wing Bolivian president Evo Morales, who grows it in Boliva.

28 lawhawk  Wed, May 6, 2009 11:43:20am

The Boston Globe reports that Morales extended the invitation to Carter to come out and pick the coca leaves with Morales later this week.

No word on if Carter accepted.

Morales invited Carter to visit the coca-growing region of Chapare to pick the leaf -- which is the key ingredient in cocaine but also has many legal, traditional uses in Andean nations.

Noting that Morales has been to his own property to harvest peanuts, Carter said he hoped to make such a trip on his next visit to Bolivia.

Ah, so it will be okay since it has legal and traditional uses in Andean nations. Whatever.

Carter is still engaging in freelance foreign policy, and this time it looks like the Obama Administration doesn't seem to have a problem with it since they've been saying that they want to warm relations with folks like [T]hugo Chavez and his lackey, Evo Morales in Bolivia.

OT, but worth mentioning.

There's been a sighting of a large glowing orb in the sky over the NYC metro area. It's its first appearance in quite some time, and people may be spooked by its presence.

Nothing to be alarmed about, and it should make regularly scheduled periodic appearances. Its absence should not be construed as the end of times or the Apocalypse. However, those with SAD may find themselves a wee bit more depressed than usual.

True a peanut is a dried fruit or a "legume" which is actually the French word for vegetable, and a peanut is definitely not a common vegetable at all , however I know of one old codger who used to grow them down in Georgia who is something like a vegetable......

Another good old Georgia joke was always aimed at how Carter used to irrigate his crops during times of extreme drought and water shortages , he'd just buy a thousand cases of Bud Beer and Call his brother Billy over for a visit

What with Prop 215 and Obama's refusal to enforce drug laws in states with medical pot regulations, and what with the total ease of anybody getting legal pot at the dispensaries already (any number of dudgy doctors will write you a 'scrip for pain or depression, plus scrips are for sale on the street for a few bucks), pot is essentially already legal in CA. Here's a (sparse) State site.

I found a linky to a Dallas Morning Snooze article from '08 that claimed this was repealed after a judge found it to be a positive defense against possession; but the link was not what Google said it was.

The purpose of these stamps was most likely to give the State gov't. an extra charge to hang on dealers and runners.

For starters, I think "The" War on Drugs is too overly-broad a term to be very helpful.

I know I've asked this before, but if you get a prescription for marijuana, how do you get it filled? Does the drug store give you joints in a little orange bottle, or are you expected to roll your own? Is a bong part of the prescription too?

Don't know in the US, but in some EU countries you'll get a prescription for a concentrated juice of marijuana. That guarantees that there is always the same amount of THC in the drug the patient is taking. It is then measured and swallowed in drops as it is so concentrated.

I think decriminalizing marijuana would allow the money currently spent on dealing with pot to be diverted to dealing with harder, more problematic drugs.

Although at times, I like playing devil's advocate on the issue by pointing out the only way to stop the cartels is to take their power away.

Taliban and Pakistani military battle in Swat

The Pakistani military and the Taliban are battling in the Taliban-controlled districts of Swat and Buner. The Pakistani military claimed 37 Taliban fighters and four security personnel were killed in Swat and 27 more Taliban fighters were killed neighboring Buner.

Major fighting in Afghanistan's east and west

Afghan soldiers and Coalition troops have launched offensives against Taliban forces in Farah and Kunar provinces and killed more than 50 Taliban. The remains of a US soldier who was listed as missing in Kunar after a Taliban assault on an outpost on May 1 have been found.

Afghan soldiers backed by Coalition strike aircraft launched an operation in Bala Boluk, targeting the more than 100 Taliban fighters manning fighting positions in the district. The operation sparked major fighting. Twenty-five Taliban fighters and four Afghan soldiers have been reported killed in the battle, which has been reported to still be underway. Eight soldiers and 11 civilians have also been wounded in the clashes.

Pot is already a "black market" drug. It's also already extremely plentiful in California (and, I'm sure, elsewhere). What makes the leagalizers think that this will rein in the sales and receive tax monies on them. Why not just continue to buy them on the black market, pay no tax, and not be liable for a misdemeanor or criminal charge?

For the same reason that moonshine doesn't sell as well as legal booze.

As background to this whole legalize drugs or keep them illegal thing, I received an eye opening bit of information during a business trip to Cali, Colombia back in 1995. I was told that cocaine cost essentially one dollar an ounce to manufacture in Colombia back then. One Colombian remarked that drug laws succeeded where Medieval Alchemists had failed, they turned something that can be cheaply made into gold. Think about how much that ounce of cocaine can cost here in the US and is it any wonder it can't be stopped?

I'm on the fence when it comes to legalizing hard drugs like cocaine. On one side I see the utter futility of the current situation given the astronomical profits to be had, yet a shudder to think how many more people could get addicted it it's legal.

More questionable blogging from Ed Morrisey.....

Chrysler lenders revealed

The administration buried the fact that they don’t expect repayment on any of the TARP funds granted to Chrysler, and won’t even keep a position in the company for any extended period of time. The American taxpayer literally will get nothing for the billions of dollars showered on Chrysler, from which the UAW and FIAT will benefit the most.

However, if you read the article he links to.....

"The reality now is that the face value [of the $4 billion bridge loan] will be written off in the bankruptcy process," said the official, who added that the 8% equity stake that Treasury will be receiving as part of the company's reorganization is meant to compensate taxpayers for the lost money.

"While we do not expect a recovery of these funds, we are comfortable that in the totality of the arrangement, the Treasury and the American taxpayer are being fairly compensated," said the official.

It might be a good deal, it might be a bad deal. But the statement that "The American taxpayer literally will get nothing..." is directly refuted by the article he links to.

I know. All over the news this morning. Arnold Spliffenegger is running legalization up the flagpole, in preparation of dropping the laws entirely probably next year.

This will just make it official.

They'll sell you the rolling papers and the pipe, if you need them. Nothing is free.

California pot dispensaries are basically legal head-shops with all the accoutrements needed, including the once-forbidden marijuana itself. All you need is a prescription, but half the people who walk into these things (actually, way more than half, but I'm being generous) are using either forged prescriptions, or prescriptions obtained under false pretenses, or prescriptions bought on the street corner. And the dispensary workers know this full well, and always look the other way, because 98% of them are legalization advocates in the first place.

Yeah, putz, that's how you gon boonswoggled into switching parties to begin with. A traitor is as despised by the new side as the old side. Heh.

The problem is that a lot of senior Democrats - you know, the ones who have actually put in the years to get their seniority - were pissed as hell at the thought of being brushed aside in favor of a carpetbagger. Reid has tenuous control over his own party in the Senate, at best, and won't invite a rebellion, especially from it's senior membership, where all the power resides, or he'll find himself out of his Speaker's job in a hot minute.

I predict that any decision on Arlen's seniority status will be postponed until after the election - to see if there's still an issue to deal with - and some sort of middle ground will be found, like granting him some fraction of his time in the GOP, but not all of it. It'll still torque off the membership, but maybe not so much.

Anyone interested in a real Empire, that of Napoleon, should head over to the Constitution Center in Philadelphia this summer. It may be your only chance in America to see an item (his hat) worn by Napoleon in the field.

The best empire is the one in which the imperial subjects (or at least the proxies who rule them) are grateful, prosperous and contented. Just ask Octavian.

That does not mean it's not an empire.

Seems to me the only ground our empire occupies is the ground it took to bury our soldiers.

You have to redefine the term "Empire" sufficiently to make it fit the case of the US. To be sure, the American "Empire" is nothing like the British, Russian, Austro-Hungarian, Ottoman, Chinese, Arab, Roman, Macedonian, Assyrian, Persian, Byzantine or any other "Empire" the world has seen.

Yeah. Our so called 'Empire' is the most benevolent one in history....for starters.

During my trip to Colombia in '95 I had a bad case of altitude sickness while they took us for a drive in the Andes (incredible scenery, by the way). We stopped at a little restaurant where they made me a little coca leaf tea and that stuff really helped. Not long after I drank it the nausea and dizziness went away. They had several coca bushes in the place and they just picked a few leaves and made me the tea.

While I sipped my tea the people I was with proceeded to get snookered on aguardiente. Good thing the driver didn't drink!

The coca leaf is a social norm in Peru and Bolivia. You can walk in the markets and see women carrying stacks of coca leafs on their back to the market. You can also buy squashed quinea pig. A national dish.

It's part of their history and culture. Coca Tea is readily available anywhere.

Well, there are rodents & then there are rodents.

Capybara live in low lands and they consume quite a lot of food.
The guinea pig on the other hand is small and needs only little food. Plus it feasts of the leftovers of the kitchen where the highland farmers breed them. Guinea pigs are easy to maintain and they need only few resources i.e. land.
Capybaras are animals that need a certain acreage.

Somehow I think that equating Gaius Octavianus and Barack Obama is a bit of a stretch. If it is an empire, it is a very strange empire indeed. One based not on conquests (see Gaius Julius Caesar) but one based on economics, protected by the US military.

Tell that to a Filipino, for example.

I think he's still pissy that America rejected him in 1980 and chose an actor. He's never gotten over it.

I think you're on to something.

"Those idiots chose a (Southerner/Actor/Cowboy/Big Dumb Guy) over (Smart/Nuanced/Intellectual/Smartest Guy In The Room/Yankee) me?"

It's classic leftie Dem bitterness. We saw this come to a head with the post-2004 "Red State/Blue State" meme. "How could those idiots chose HIM? Don't they know they're voting against THEIR OWN BEST INTERESTS? They must be DUPES! It's a CONSPIRACY! They don't DESERVE a smarty man like (Carter/Kerry/whoever), anyway! FUCK THEM!"

Except in Jimmah's case, it's internalized. Think of the uncannily French way he always does the opposite of what's morally correct and sensible. Think of the way he always sides against Israel because he thinks the Jews killed Jesus. He is a very small, a very tiny, tiny, sad little man, masquerading as a statesman because of his monumental insecurity.

Not to hijack your conversation, but I never thought of his character as racist. A different time, different world, different life experience. I found his "I have more in common with these people than my own family" line more telling of his thoughts.

I agree it was a bit too convenient on his quick change though. I sure did enjoy being able to watch a non-PC movie.
