Palestinians Prevented from Propagandizing Pope

Middle East • Views: 2,666

Leave it to the Palestinians to try to turn a visit from Pope Benedict into a propaganda show: IDF bans Palestinians from hosting pope next to West Bank fence.

A Palestinian official says the Palestinian Authority has scrapped plans to host Pope Benedict XVI next week on a stage near the West Bank separation fence.

Palestinian say they had hoped that receiving the pope next to a towering cement wall and military watchtower inside the Aida refugee camp would highlight their suffering under Israeli occupation.

But Palestinian lawmaker Essa Qaraqie said Thursday that the location had been changed to a United Nations school after Israeli military officials forbade them to erect the stage near the barrier. The pope’s convoy will, however, still pass close to the barrier.

They're still using the visit for propaganda, though.

Will he be given another keffiyah? Will he wear it?

Funny how the Muslim Palis are making the Christian Palis very uncomfortable, enough to leave.

No offense to any pro-papists, but what's the Pope's problem? He's a big boy. He should be able to reject this mess on his own. Or is there something between the lines that I'm not reading?

6 lawhawk  Thu, May 7, 2009 9:15:11am

And why was the barrier put in place in the first place? Oh yeah, because of suicide bombers and terrorist threats against Israel. Israel protects itself from terrorists, and they're the bad guys?

The barrier's there because the terrorists have never given up the hope of attacking and killing Israelis. They're just biding their time until they resume the kassam and mortar attacks. Until then, we'll get a dog and pony show, and kudos to the Pope and the IDF for not falling for the Palestinian agitprop parade.

Guess the Taliban have learned from the State Department's favorite terrorists:

Officials: Taliban May Have Faked Civilian Slaughter

Did the Taliban stage a slaughter of dozens, to make U.S. forces in Afghanistan look like butchers? That’s what American military officials are implying in response to claims that coalition airstrikes killed dozens of civilians taking shelter from fighting between Taliban militants and international troops in Afghanistan’s Farah Province.

The International Committee of the Red Cross reported dozens of dead, but Gen. David McKiernan, the top U.S. commander in Afghanistan, suggested that the deaths may not have been caused by airstrikes. McKiernan told reporters in Kabul: “We have some other information that leads us to distinctly different conclusions about the cause of these civilian casualties.” An anonymous defense official took things a bit further, telling the Washington Post’s Greg Jaffe: “the Taliban went to a concerted effort to make it look like the U.S. airstrikes caused this.”

According to the New York Times, forensic investigators are investigating the possibility that Afghan civilians were killed by grenades thrown by Taliban fighters, who then paraded the bodies around a village, claiming the dead were killed by American bombs. And Col. Greg Julian, the main U.S. military spokesman in Kabul, downplayed the total number of casualties, telling The Wall Street Journal he was “pretty sure the high numbers of casualties are not going to prove true.”

No odd at all. This is as much proof as one would want if you need to understand what is going on over there. Attacking ones sexual preference was a standard practice of these racial nationalist, hell, didn't the 30's teach us anything?

And this little post by Bostom just highlights the hatred. Bostom didn't address or refute a single point in Bawer's article, never even mentioned it, linked to it, but never mentioned it.

Yeah, it was a very strange post that Bostom wrote. All ad hominem and no real substance. It is like they are now disowing Fortuyn in order to be closer to the VB.

That does seem to be the direction they're heading. They aren't interested in personal freedom and liberty. They're leaning more towards a repressing freedom of religion and enforcing their idea of morals.

Can't blame the Palestinians for trying.. of course it's cheap BS but you gotta remember (1) The Israelis aren't always effective at barring this sort of thing, so it was worth a shot, (2) This pope hasn't evinced much respect for the cause of Israeli security, so they were encouraged, and (3) foreign dignitaries in Israel are routinely dragged to Yad Vashem for its pathos value (a practice I myself happen to favor, but still, it is what it is).

This pope/wall tactic on the part of the PA is only remarkable for its poor conception. Definitely a below average showing for Palestinian propagandists.

Carl in Jerusalem linked an article a few days ago where someone in Israel (Peres perhaps?) wanted to transfer ownership of several Christian holy places to the Vatican. I thought it sounded like a great idea--let the Vatican, which has very deep pockets, take over protecting and maintaining Christian sites within Israel. It will be harder for so many Vatican officials to maintain their warped views of Palestinians vs Israelis once they physically engage in concrete threat assessment, IMHO.

Leonard Nimoy likes it.

"I was struck by the intensity of their feelings about the classic Star Trek material that we did," Nimoy noted. "I was very touched by it."

The memories and emotion hit home when the actor finally saw the fully completed movie.

"I gotta tell ya, I cried a lot," Nimoy said. "I did, I sat there and cried a lot watching it."

"Don't tell anybody," he added jokingly to the convention crowd. "It's out of character for me."

Tom Clancy's book The Sum of All Fears has Jack Ryan come up with a mideast peace plan that works. It's been a while since I read it, but it involves using the Vatican to help and provide security, I think in a shared Jerusalem.

Great link!

A conversation in a Hollywood restaurant.

“That and being,” he claws quote marks in the air, “a good Christian. Listen, Obama's a Christian like I'm a Hasid.”

I am floored.

“You're saying that Democrats assume Obama is lying for political expediency?”

“To get elected, sure. Hey, welcome to the real world.”

I take a deep breath.

“So Cary Prejean is a big fat target—”

“Not fat, my friend, did you see that slamming body?”

“Okay, so she's a slamming beautiful target because she's a genuine Christian and sincerely opposes gay marriage whereas Obama gets a pass because, you assume, he's a liar and an opportunist.”

“You got it.”

so here goes my rant of the day
Internet buddy of mine who is extreme liberal gave me article from salon ( i didn't really read it) compare Obama to Spock, because Obama is so cool and collective, etc... Its not the 1st article i seen comparing political figures to star trek or star wars character (yes Bush was compared to Vader by Newsweek). As a scifi fan i got deeply offended, because in any shape or form u can't compare zero to Spock. BTW this person found this article really funny. I am sick and tired of hypocritical moronic liberal media.

Thanks.

I am not so sure about that. The "Christians" living under "Palestinian" rule do not and can act independently. They tend to do what ever they have to in order to simply survive.

I've met some Pali Catholics, and heard their sad tale of how the RoPers are trying to drive them out. I expect that Catholic and other Christian Holy sites located in Paliland will be torn down soon (in the next few years).

Again, this is why I think Peres is smart to hand these sites over to the RC Church. I'm damned sick and tired of reading stories that connect Israel to threats against these Christian sites.

Make them Vatican-owned property, and let the Vatican decide if they are worth protecting from the "peace-loving" Palestinians.

You know Gella, I read what you wrote. Many times when I read something, I will get a particular feeling about it, but not really the right words to articulate that feeling.

I chewed on it, read it again, and I think I have it.

My mental impression of that story is folks who need to make those comparisons, (I recognize it often done in jest) refuse to digest the true reality which surrounds them. Of course Spock is a fictional character. In that arena, sure, he is cool. He can be, it is make believe.

Pasting such a label on him somehow qualifies their impression of him, because when it comes down to brass tacks, the real world we are facing right now is potentially scary as any episode of Star Trek.

Comparing him to someone tangible from the past, under similar circumstances, and stakes at hand, becomes more of a difficult task. Almost impossible in my opinion.

For them, this is a pseudo-verification. It qualifies him. These are the same people hell-bent on recreating, and finding some tacit justification in something called Camelot.

I think these are the same people who create the Facebook questions.

Fascists have an entire political ideology -- Ok? And part and parcel of that "ideology" is hatred of gays (gay lifestyle, etc.) This might be similar, btw, to certain Christian right-wing groups who make similar statements of outright dislike/disgust with a gay lifestyle, gays, but the next thing ya know, the head of the group turns out to be gay (or having gay affairs) -- who was it that was just in the news not that long ago? Was it Swaggert? (I don't recall the name). Clearly, there's the ideology, then there's the "reality" (what's really happening). So, the rhetoric -- with regard to fascists is open hatred/hostility towards gays (homosexuals were also sent to the gas chambers, as I'm sure you're aware). Then, there's the "reality" -- ie, the "discovery" that "Dear Leader" is not quite so gung-ho hetero as previously believed...(there's that Freudian critique of gay hatred -- that in reality it's just a cover for homosexual proclivities...)

Fact: The last Pope was targeted for assassination by a terror cell which crossed from Gaza, into Israel, and then into Judea And Samaria. They were tracked by a Anti Terror element of the the Israeli Police Force and were surrounded 24 hours prior to the Pope's arrival in Bethlehem. One terrorist exploded his belt outside the the house injuring one of the Israeli policemen with fragments of bone from the bomber. The rest of the cell was eliminated after a quick but fierce gun battle.

And the Pope wants to parade around with these barbarians. I hope Bibi learned his lesson and allows the PA to provide the Pope protection.

Many western Big Protestant churches have taken the side of the Palestinian-Arabs, and against Israel. To be the best of my knowledge, the Catholic church has not done this.

As a Catholic, it isn't so much anti-Israel or pro-Pali bias I'm concerned with as it is the "moral equivalency" of their calls for "peace" whenever the Israelis finally exercise their right to defend their citizens. That's the very attitude that is pushing toward this two-state "solution." The Holy Father, God love him, will not put his Church on the line for what I think he ultimately views as temporal politics.

Israelis generally don't pay much attention to Arab propaganda, or anti-semitism in general. They are desensitized to it and/or they feel powerless to combat it. It's a nationwide malaise and a major problem in Israeli society, IMHO.

246 marknz  Fri, May 8, 2009 1:28:58am

It's time that Israel goes on the offense with building more nuclear arms with the stated aim that if missiles are launched at Israel they will tun all of the Middle East into a radioactive wasteland, with particular attention paid to Iran.

They need to have a military with bombers in the air 24/7 with the rules of engagement if they attack us they will all die. Period.

If they can't achieve that then the US and western countries should join in the camp and side with Israel with the idea if any threat is turn on Israel then no other country in the Middle East will survive.
