Whoops. Looks like the state of California pissed off the wrong labor union:

President Obama campaigned on cutting soaring medical costs. So what happened when the state of California cut the state's contribution to the wages of home medical care workers from a maximum of $12.10 per hour to a maximum of $10.10?

SEIU, the powerful union that has been closest to Obama and is the parent union of ACORN, asked the Federal government to stop the cost-cutting.

1. 52% of popular people want pot legalized. Or 52% of the population does. One or the other.

2. The CIA memos implicated Dems - they knew about the torture. OH NOES!

3. WAIT! Those memos might not be accurate because they were complied from hand written notes! WHEW! That was close.

4. Bush is the scurge of the earth.

5. Obama's stupidity isn't stupidity at all - he's playing chess. Yes. Every weird move he makes is simply a chess move, and we must sit back and wait for the next one. We are simply too dumb to see just what the full genius plot is - not being Obama level smart.

6. Nothing on the most recent Obama bus accident involving the Air Force One incident and the person "responsible"

7. Good thing Obama wouldn't budge on those Union wages in CA. Seriously, just how selfish is it to expect such things to avoid total state collapse?

Here's an interesting idea from CNN.....
Wingnuts of the week

We’re trying out a new segment on “American Morning” called “Wingnuts of the Week.” It builds on a simple premise – the far-right and the far-left are equally insane.

What’s a Wingnut? It’s someone on the far-right wing or far-left wing of American politics – the professional partisans and the unhinged activists – the folks who always try to divide rather than unite. In our polarized two party system, they have disproportionate influence and too often define the terms of debate. With this segment, we’re going to try and take that power back.

In this first week, we’re naming two charter members of the Wingnut Hall of Fame who recently reared their heads in the news once again. We want to be equal opportunity offenders, punching both left and right, so both are members of Congress – one current and one former – and both are defended in their respective echo chambers on the far-right and far-left.

So drum roll, please: The Wingnuts of the Week for our inaugural edition are Michele Bachman and Cynthia McKinney.

Problem is, the Zionist lobby really DID target Congresswoman McKinney for defeat (in a district where very few Jewish people live).

And the reason they targeted her is because of her opposition to US military aid to the brutal Israeli Army and it’s genocidal occupation of the Palestinian Territories.

And Rahm Emanuel really is a hardcore Zionist, who – if he had to choose, would pick Israel over the USA in a heartbeat!

Sorry, Congresswoman McKinney is not a “wingnut”!

Here's an interesting idea from CNN.....
Wingnuts of the week

This was submitted as a spinoff link, and I just finished penning a rather lengthy comment there.

My take: I'm glad someone is exhibiting some moderating, rational tendencies in the MSM, but (1) it's kind of hypocritical for CNN of all organizations to launch something like this, and (2) it's a really stupid idea from their perspective. They've already alienated some of their foaming-at-the-mouth antisemitic viewership by naming Cynthia McKinney, and every new left-wing maniac they name is going to lose them some loyal viewers.

Um… Is this a joke or are you really a totally brain-dead pack of morons? If not, it’s clear what your modus opperandi must be.

Comparing Cynthia McKinney to the babbling bimbo, Bachman – who claims Democrats are “un-American” – is disingenuous in the least and nothing but a sinister pro-Zionist propaganda smear through association.

Seriously, you have the gall to represent yourselves as being serious “journalists”?

If you’re really that shockingly un-aware of the influence of AIPAC and ADL on our political system, then at least have enough class and integrity to stop calling yourselves a “news” organization

At the Atlanta Olympics, there was a Brazilian guard, can't remember his name (Oscar...?) He didn't play defense OR offense - every time down the court he'd set up outside the 3 point line and just wait.

Every shot he took was 3 point range, and 80% of them went in. Amazing.

Speaking of free association rights:

Ohio Christian school tells student to skip prom

A student at a fundamentalist Baptist school that forbids dancing, rock music, hand-holding and kissing will be suspended if he takes his girlfriend to her public high school prom, his principal said.

Despite the warning, 17-year-old Tyler Frost, who has never been to a dance before, said he plans to attend Findlay High School's prom Saturday.

Frost, a senior at Heritage Christian School in northwest Ohio, agreed to the school's rules when he signed a statement of cooperation at the beginning of the year, principal Tim England said.

The teen, who is scheduled to receive his diploma May 24, would be suspended from classes and receive an "incomplete" on remaining assignments, England said. Frost also would not be permitted to attend graduation but would get a diploma once he completes final exams. If Frost is involved with alcohol or sex at the prom, he will be expelled, England said.

Frost's stepfather Stephan Johnson said the school's rules should not apply outside the classroom.

Maybe it's just me, but if you're going to present yourself as an authority on unusual facts, proper spelling and grammar are very effective. When this was pointed out by several people, his reply was:

This is just a light hearted topic I started but some have taken to insult me for my bad spelling and grammar. This I do fine quite hurtful since I have always tried to stay clear of slandering and insulting people here on the [board name removed].

I love being told I don't understand the Constitution by people who don't understand the Constitution. Idiots.

Shows how much you know.

I quote Article VIII, Section 1 (an often-overlooked part of the U.S. Constitution):

Upon clearly proffered request posed by any bona fide citizen of the several states, a blogger must stop whatever else he is doing, and explain to the expressed satisfaction of the requester why he always has to be all hatin' on Ron Paul, whom this Constitution hereby ordains as a true and loyal champion not only of freedom, but also of liberty, and furthermore surprisingly handsome and vital for a man of his age.

Way OT:

US security firm Blackwater ends Iraq operations

BAGHDAD: "US security firm Blackwater ended its operations in Iraq on Thursday, closing a controversial era for the company whose guards shot dead 17 civilians in Baghdad in 2007. “The task order for security protection operations held by Blackwater comes to an end today in Baghdad,” American embassy spokeswoman Susan Ziadeh said, adding that Triple Canopy will replace it.

The US State Department on March 31 awarded Virginia-based Triple Canopy a contract reportedly worth nearly a billion dollars to take over protection of US government personnel in Iraq."

Also, article from ScienceBlogs:

"Beginning May 7th, Triple Canopy will officially take over Xe/Blackwater's mega-contract with the U.S. State Department for guarding occupation officials in Iraq. It's sure to be a lucrative deal: Obama's Iraq plan will inevitably rely on an increased use of private contractors, including an army of mercenaries to protect his surge of diplomats operating out of the monstrous U.S. embassy in Baghdad.

The Iraq contract may come as no surprise. But according to federal contract records obtained by AlterNet, the Obama administration has also paid Triple Canopy millions of dollars to provide "security services" in Israel. In February and March, the Obama administration awarded a "delivery order" to Triple Canopy worth $5.5 million under State Department contract SAQMPD05F5528, which is labeled "PROTECTIVE SERVICES--ISRAEL." According to one government document, the contract is scheduled to run until September 2012. (Another document says September 2009.) Some people are complaining about LGF loading slowly -- but it's loading just fine for me. Unfortunately, there are sometimes issues with local networks that cause those kinds of problems, and there's nothing I can do about it.

There are a lot of wires that make up the internet, and sometimes things go wrong somewhere along the way from your computer to the LGF server.

Hey Mich! Loved that commercial! Commercial's are frequently more entertaining than the TV shows they sponsor - or so I'm told - if it isn't pro football I don't really watch TV - well except for NatGeo which is obsessed with people in prision, especially in prison overseas, but which also has the Dog Whisperer and Dogtown on every Friday night!

re: #461 mich-again Sorry, I don't get the analogy. I mean once Windows got to 95/98, all software from the old 4.2 worked on it through and new software for it worked on 2000, XP and XP pro, and almost all of my older software works on my VISTA - it's hard to find sometimes but it does still work. And geez - I know some software is more complicated than it's predeccesors, but have you noticed the size of most softward items these days? Nowadays software has to be at least 5MGB if it just wants to hang with the cool crowd!

I had a 1988 Camaro 350 V8. It had a mind of its own. We easily had it over 100 a couple of times, but the speedometer only went up to 80! As if. Now I have a mid-90s Chevy S10 that shakes if I go over 60. :D

Well, on Omaha Beach, they ran into a buzzsaw. That buzzsaw was mostly solved by Stormin' Norman Cota, CO of the 29th Infantry Division.

Utah Beach.... the 4th Infantry Division didn't land where they expected, and BG Theodore Roosevelt Jr. (who won a posthumous MoH) decided to start the invasion from where they landed. It was posthumous only because he suffered a fatal heart attack later that month. He is one of the very few sons who won an MoH of a father who also won an MoH. IIRC, the only other pair is Arthur McArthur and Douglas McArthur.

For Sword, Juno and Gold beaches, they ran into what they were expecting. The only problem there was that Montgomery was supposed to take Caen right pronto, and didn't.

BOHICA, folks...

Chrysler’s non-TARP lenders, as they dubbed themselves, don’t plan to defend their earlier objections to the deal and may withdraw them formally, said Tom Lauria, the White & Case LLP attorney representing the group.

“After a great deal of soul-searching and, quite frankly, agony, they concluded they just don’t have critical mass to withstand the enormous pressure and machinery of the U.S. government,” Lauria said today in an interview.

Originally, it was pronounced "vak-you-um", so the 2 Us made sense. When this type of cleaner began to be marketed to housewives in the '50s, the pronunciation was changed to make it easier to say and sell.

I'm sure you are right about the original pronunciation, since that's how it would be spoken in Latin, from whence it came.

But, "the '50s"? Come on now, I know for certain that electric vacuum cleaners were commonplace as early as the 1920's, and were probably introduced well before then. And they even made manual vacuum cleaners, operated by pulling a big plunger incorporated into the handle. I've seen them in museums. I've got a '20s Filter Queen in my shop. Still works, and uses the same filter as the current ones!

I suspect the sequential "u" sounds simply got merged into one as a result of the lazy speech habits of we North Americans. We're the ones that say "aluminum", while the Brits still say "aluminium", after all.

"We all declare for liberty; but in using the same word we do not all mean the same thing. With some the word liberty may mean for each man to do as he pleases with himself, and the product of his labor; while with others, the same word may mean for some men to do as they please with other men, and the product of other men's labor. Here are two, not only different, but incompatible things, called by the same name - liberty. And it follows that each of the things is, by the respective parties, called by two different and incompatible names - liberty and tyranny."
