I find it truly stunning how many people can shrug off stuff like this, preferring instead a tiny, cramped cosmos just 6,000 years old, scheduled to end any-time-now in a scripted stage show. An ancient and immense and ongoing cosmos is so vastly more dramatic and worthy of a majestic Creator. Our brains, capable of exploring His universe, picking up His tools and doing His work, seem destined for much more than cowering in a corner, praying that some of our neighbors will go to hell.

I didn't catch all of the details, but heard someone on a radio show speculate that the UAW will liquidate any assests it can, fund its its pension plan and bug out. It's just speculation, mind you, but I thought of the movie Wall Street, where Gordon Gekko is asked why he's wrecking a company and he responds "Because it's wreckable." I see Obama and his union buddies serving that role.

I believe they're doing their best to sell it to Fiat (how appropriate for a car they got from the US federal government, who prints fiat currency).

The big story is the stepping over of the creditors. Case or no case, how easy do you think it's going to be for any business even remotely connected with the Feds to get any sort of credit?

Try importing something into China, talk about jumping through flaming hoops. I ship things in there all the time. But, I cannot ship things out, that is for Chinese companies only (or big US carriers like FedEx, UPS, etc.) That is a closed market to imports. Besides imports to China getting delayed all the time, there are excessive "tariffs" that aren't called tariffs are in place. And, do not get me started about the "grease money" sometimes needed to get something cleared in less than a few weeks. When they ship something here, it is cleared extremely quickly, with very little red tape.

Yeah it was entertaining but I was a little perturbed when he dragged out the English Longbowmen being the origin of the middle finger gesture and "fuck you" legend.

It's kind of like when you have someone explaining something to you that you know little about, and in the middle of the explanation they say something you know for sure is bogus. It puts the rest under suspicion whether it warrants it or not. I felt like this a couple of times watching P&T Bullshit too.

I know what you mean. You'll almost never find a "pure" source, so the best thing you can do is verify everything with multiple sources.

Last I heard, Aristophanes was using the middle finger to make fun of the Socratic method in his plays. I'm not sure how many English longshoremen were around at the time.

Well, it did limit itself to events in history.

I think in writing, the constraints are a little more stringent, such as writing the longest work you can without the letter e, or using words of lengths that match the order in the digits of Pi.

I'm in the South Bay. Dear friends are in the SB foothills. Evacuated from their home, but didn't want to go this far away, so they're in a shelter. Waiting. I'm praying for this fog to cool it down enough, that the Firefighters can get control of this thing. ( So glad I left "thank you for your service" notes on their windsheilds last July!)

I just saw that part! He does refer to it as legend, and even asks rhetorically, "Is it true? It doesn't matter!"

On a related note: Why Is The Middle Finger Offensive?

no: that's what a claymore is for... the AK is for when you absolutely, positively never want to have to clean your rifle or learn how to shoot, but you'd like it to w*rk, more or less, usually, at least to spray bullets down range in the general direction of someone.

Well I was just quoting Ordell Robbie.

re: #92 redc1c4

It's definitely well trained.

Living here in Vegas, I understand that trains are those things that go by only in the extremely early morning, so as not to hold up traffic from getting to the strip (the only train crossing on Las Vegas Blvd. is south of the famous Las Vegas sign).

96 Syrah  Sat, May 9, 2009 12:36:14am

re: #69 Sharmuta

I wonder if Syrah would consider that a constrained song?

This part is key.

We didn't start the fire
It was always burning
Since the world's been turning
We didn't start the fire
No we didn't light it
But we tried to fight it

And then this:

We didn't start the fire
But when we are gone
Will it still burn on, and on, and on, and on
...

The constrained would understand trying to "fight it", to a point.

The constrained would not wonder if "Will it still burn on, and on, and on, and on . . . "

The constrained knows it would. To the constrained, human nature is fixed. To the unconstrained, it is not. Only the unconstrained could think it possible for humans to be able to create a world where the injustices, tragedies, corruptions and heartbreaks that are the mile markers of our lives could be made just a curiosity of history.

-

But, I could be wrong about this. Analyzing songs like this can be as mad and crazy as trying to divine the future from leavings in a tea-cup.

As much as I have generally enjoyed Brin's SF (after the greats began fading by the early 80s I really enjoyed The Three B's: Bear, Benford, Brin), and his The Transparent Society is an important non-fiction work about social impact of technology, he so *totally* fell for Obama as the savior. As a generally more thoughtful liberal he should have a pretty good case of whiplash if he were intellectually honest.

The otherwise excellent point he actually makes in Charles' post is really undercut by the very last bit, "...praying that some of our neighbors will go to hell". That gratuitous slam -- a cliched bit of libel, the left-wing caricature of Christians (as opposed to, say, the PC-acceptable safely neutered Unitarians)-- reveals his hand and shows that his appeal about a 'majestic creator' is merely a debate tactic and not a real sign of respect for thoughtful religious belief in general.

I have yet to see any of these guys take the next logical step, which is: if some 'God' created this immense universe, apparently mostly devoid of intelligent life, doesn't that suggest a 'Manifest Destiny" for humanity to explore, expand, and colonize it?

re: #13 rain of lead

yes, but now zero has gotten away with rewriting bankruptcy laws
they now mean whatever he wants them too

Fortunately, precedent has no legal meaning outside of the rules. All it will take is for someone to stand up and demand their day in court over such treatment to determine that such tactics are not permissible.

The problem in this case was the lack of sufficient opposition; those opposing the offers being made were a small group holding a small percentage of the firm's debt. Once one or two of them rolled over, their total holdings dipped below 6%, which I guess is some sort of legal threshold as far as bankruptcy proceedings are concerned, and they simply didn't have enough oomph to have any impact on proceedings. At that point, continuing the fight was pointless from the standpoint of acting in their investor's best interests; all they would have been able to do was generate heat, with no light.

Another test may come up soon. 0 threatened to cut off stimulus funds for California if Arnold didn't rescind his order from February cutting state union pay. There's no clause in the Recovery Act permitting such a demand, the President doesn't make policy (that would be Congress) and if 0 wants such an action to take place he'll have to go back to Congress to get it unless Arnold rolls over. Back in Congress, any attempt to cut funding for California will run square up against Nancy Pelosi, who isn't likely to support such a move.

Hard to say whether Arnold will grow some stones and oppose this. And Pelosi has her own problems developing over the CIA briefings.

And even the media seems to be getting fed up with this heavy-handed thuggery. All four networks have cried "Foul!" over 0's never-ending "requests" for free air in the middle of prime time. Dragging this sort of behavior, which is rapidly becoming a pattern, out into the light of day is the best defense against it, and I would hope that the media will begin reporting on this aspect of the Administration even if it's for the craven reason that they're being affected by it themselves.

And on the way back, drop by Coventry, or Birmingham. Or if he wants to go the long way around, make a pit stop in Nanking. Or Singapore, Hong Kong, or Manila.

I find it truly fascinating that TOTUS can only get choked up about the suffering of people who were hammered because their leaders decided to go out of their way to start fights, and doesn't seem to care about the people in other countries who got it in the neck because those same leaders came down with a bad attack of "I'm destined to rule the world", and said people ended up on their s#!t list.

It almost makes me believe that he inverts everything in his head.

Probably not the green party, but I can see a possible rise in Libertarianism thanks to Beck. The Republican party needs to get back to something like a "Contract with America" that was so influential in the past because the R label has become Democrat Lite. They have lost their way and have chosen their candidates poorly.

re: #196 songbird

I could probably see the Democrats actually moving a bit to the right as they get settled in, plus "accountability in government" is all the rage at least for the time being after Obama's election. There is still the stimulus-induced deficit, but that seems like a "necessary evil" given what the new administration inherited coming in.

That said, I asked the question mainly because I cannot possibly conceive the Republicans offering any other substantial alternative given their decline into obsolescence.

Yes? I'm in love with the constitution. Ron Paul has so totally ruined the libertarian party in my eyes that I couldn't vote for someone running under there name. The "green" movement has so completely ruined the meaning and purpose of going green that I find a party named after them completely untrustworthy. I'm all for not wasting resources and caring for the earth but not at the expense of the people living on it. And not at the words of the hypocritical leaders of the Green movement.

1. GRASSROOTS DEMOCRACY
Every human being deserves a say in the decisions that affect their lives and not be subject to the will of another. Therefore, we will work to increase public participation at every level of government and to ensure that our public representatives are fully accountable to the people who elect them. We will also work to create new types of political organizations which expand the process of participatory democracy by directly including citizens in the decision-making process.

2. SOCIAL JUSTICE AND EQUAL OPPORTUNITY
All persons should have the rights and opportunity to benefit equally from the resources afforded us by society and the environment. We must consciously confront in ourselves, our organizations, and society at large, barriers such as racism and class oppression, sexism and homophobia, ageism and disability, which act to deny fair treatment and equal justice under the law.

3. ECOLOGICAL WISDOM
Human societies must operate with the understanding that we are part of nature, not separate from nature. We must maintain an ecological balance and live within the ecological and resource limits of our communities and our planet. We support a sustainable society which utilizes resources in such a way that future generations will benefit and not suffer from the practices of our generation. To this end we must practice agriculture which replenishes the soil; move to an energy efficient economy; and live in ways that respect the integrity of natural systems.

4. NON-VIOLENCE
It is essential that we develop effective alternatives to society’s current patterns of violence. We will work to demilitarize, and eliminate weapons of mass destruction, without being naive about the intentions of other governments. We recognize the need for self-defense and the defense of others who are in helpless situations. We promote non-violent methods to oppose practices and policies with which we disagree, and will guide our actions toward lasting personal, community and global peace.

5. DECENTRALIZATION
Centralization of wealth and power contributes to social and economic injustice, environmental destruction, and militarization. Therefore, we support a restructuring of social, political and economic institutions away from a system which is controlled by and mostly benefits the powerful few, to a democratic, less bureaucratic system. Decision-making should, as much as possible, remain at the individual and local level, while assuring that civil rights are protected for all citizens.

6. COMMUNITY-BASED ECONOMICS AND ECONOMIC JUSTICE
We recognize it is essential to create a vibrant and sustainable economic system, one that can create jobs and provide a decent standard of living for all people while maintaining a healthy ecological balance. A successful economic system will offer meaningful work with dignity, while paying a “living wage” which reflects the real value of a person’s work.

Local communities must look to economic development that assures protection of the environment and workers’ rights; broad citizen participation in planning; and enhancement of our “quality of life.” We support independently owned and operated companies which are socially responsible, as well as co-operatives and public enterprises that distribute resources and control to more people through democratic participation.

7. FEMINISM AND GENDER EQUITY
We have inherited a social system based on male domination of politics and economics. We call for the replacement of the cultural ethics of domination and control with more cooperative ways of interacting that respect differences of opinion and gender. Human values such as equity between the sexes, interpersonal responsibility, and honesty must be developed with moral conscience. We should remember that the process that determines our decisions and actions is just as important as achieving the outcome we want.

8. RESPECT FOR DIVERSITY
We believe it is important to value cultural, ethnic, racial, sexual, religious and spiritual diversity, and to promote the development of respectful relationships across these lines.

We believe that the many diverse elements of society should be reflected in our organizations and decision-making bodies, and we support the leadership of people who have been traditionally closed out of leadership roles. We acknowledge and encourage respect for other life forms than our own and the preservation of biodiversity.

9. PERSONAL AND GLOBAL RESPONSIBILITY
We encourage individuals to act to improve their personal well-being and, at the same time, to enhance ecological balance and social harmony. We seek to join with people and organizations around the world to foster peace, economic justice, and the health of the planet.

10. FUTURE FOCUS AND SUSTAINABILITY
Our actions and policies should be motivated by long-term goals. We seek to protect valuable natural resources, safely disposing of or “unmaking” all waste we create, while developing a sustainable economics that does not depend on continual expansion for survival. We must counterbalance the drive for short-term profits by assuring that economic development, new technologies, and fiscal policies are responsible to future generations who will inherit the results of our actions.

People that press Oppression Issues like women are still oppressed and Minorities are oppressed are naturally just allowing hte so called victims to continue believing htey are victims I can't stand behind that.

re: #192 laZardo

So... Green Party, Constitution Party, Libertarian Party. Which one of them's gonna be replacing the GOP on its way out?

/also, good evening.

I'm betting on "none of the above". My best bud, the E-5 (who has friends who get seriously into this sort of thing, even more so than Lizards) is saying that the odds are in favor of a bunch of moderates bolting both major parties and starting up a third party. Sort of the way the original Democratic Republicans split over the issue of slavery in the 1830s, resulting in the Whigs, the forerunner of the modern Republicans. William Henry Harrison, John Tyler, Zachary Taylor and Millard Fillmore were all elected President as Whigs; Abraham Lincoln was the first to run as a Republican.

Generally, new major political parties are formed when a previously-existing one (or more) follow policies that alienate a sufficient number of their core constituencies to result in a philosophical break. It is very rare for complete outsiders (such as the Greens and Libertarians) to achieve major-party status. (In fact, the only examples I can think of offhand are Italy, 1922-43, and Germany, 1933-45.) Without a solid, and relatively large base, to start with, they don't go anywhere.

Right now, that "large base" isn't on any of the extremes in this country. It's right around the middle, what used to be called the "Silent Majority", who are pretty much fed up with not only the excesses of their leaders in both parties, but the arrogant dismissiveness and elitism of those on the left, and the dissembling and hypocrisy of those on the right.

Right now, both sides think they can exploit the center's dissatisfaction- not realizing that they, the two extremes, are what the center is most dissatisfied with. The last leader to make this mistake was one Oliver Cromwell. He started by beheading a king, and ended by causing a civil war. in the end, another king came along, who was at least marginally less incompetent than his predecessor, and Cromwell's crowd was sent packing. (Some of them to Plymouth, MA, by way of Rotterdam.)

The most likely outcome of either "extreme" trying to capitalize on the unrest at the center is not the center throwing in its lot with either one, or some fringe group gaining ascendancy. It's the center saying " A plague on both (or all) your houses- we're going into business for ourselves, and since you can't lead, you can either follow, or get the H**l out of the way."

And that's how new, major political parties are born. As for the Greens, etc., like the leadership of the left and right as a whole, they are increasingly coming to resemble the Know-Nothings. And they didn't get anywhere, either.

/just IMHO.

cheers

In 1833-1834, the American Whig Party was founded by a number of former National Republicans, including John Quincy Adams and Henry Clay. The Whig Party was wholly opposed to the policies of president Andrew Jackson. Jackson was regarded by Whigs as an anti-modernization figure a man who would irreparably harm the development of the nascent United States. Whigs were especially opposed to Jackson’s unauthorized removal of deposits from the Bank of the United States, which killed the Bank. Eventually different Whig factions (southern and northern) rallied around economic policy that encouraged a larger government and a modern industrial economy.

From [Link: www.litencyc.com...]

Homepage of the Modern Whig Party.

Established in 1833, the Whigs are one of America's oldest mainstream political parties. We were the original party of Abraham Lincoln and four other U.S. Presidents.

Revived by Iraq and Afghanistan veterans, the grassroots movement has quickly attracted tens of thousands of members. We represent moderate voters from all walks of life who cherry-pick between traditional Democratic and Republican ideals in what has been called the Modern Whig Philosophy.

Basically the Same thing American Whig party was it's original Incarnation in hte 1800's while the Modern Whig party came back to life as a result of returning Iraq/Afganistan Veterans.

Seven Principles of the Constitution Party are:

1. Life: For all human beings, from conception to natural death;
2. Liberty: Freedom of conscience and actions for the self-governed individual;
3. Family: One husband and one wife with their children as divinely instituted;(this is iffy for me Govt has no business in hte private lives of it's citizens)
4. Property: Each individual's right to own and steward personal property without government burden;
5. Constitution: and Bill of Rights interpreted according to the actual intent of the Founding Fathers;
6. States' Rights: Everything not specifically delegated by the Constitution to the federal government, nor prohibited by the Constitution to the states, is reserved to the states or to the people;
7. American Sovereignty: American government committed to the protection of the borders, trade, and common defense of Americans, and not entangled in foreign alliances.(The chain of alliances forged Pre WW1 was a large part of why the war spread so far but I do believe we still need Alliances)(protection of the borders, trade and Common defense I'm strongly behind tho.)

The Constitution Party (US, current) is correctly regarded as a fringe party that rivals, maybe even outdoes, Ron Paul. Which is probably why he endorsed their candidate, Chuck Baldwin in the last election.

Their principal support comes from the JBS and various neo-confederate types. Baldwin himself is one of the most theocratic candidates ever to have put his name on a US Presidential ballot.

Of course, if Maliki's government did follow the COIN procedures established under Gen. Petraeus... The One would quickly label him as a "human rights violator", and cut off aid. Plus probably demanding he bring his opponents into his government...

Oh, right. The One is already demanding that.

I have come to the conclusion that The One wants Iraq to go back to the Baathists, or a reasonable facsimile' thereof, to prove a "philosophical point". Much as the Dems of a generation ago cheered the "last helicopter out" withdrawal from the U. S. embassy in Saigon when South Vietnam fell to the NVA.

He will claim the "point" is the "limits of power". In actuality, the point will be "U.S. and Allies=Bad, Anyone Who Hates Same= Good".

The One is an almost perfect example of the "post-modern" intellectual, who has been educated almost beyond his capacity for understanding, and thus mistakes his prejudices (mainly against his fellow citizens) for incontrovertible facts. He wants to punish us for what he and his cronies see as our "hubris" (like he doesn't have any... right), and is perfectly willing to sacrifice anyone who is foolish enough to be on our side to achieve this.

Put simply, it's Ted Kennedy and South Vietnam, plus Jimmy Carter and Iran, all over again.

And I'm pretty sure Afghanistan is his next project along the same lines. (Just before he throws Israel all the way under the duals.) With Pakistan as the "trump card"- in the hands of people who really, really want to have the world to themselves. At any cost.

As for his endgame, I'm not sure. Because I'm pretty sure he simply hasn't thought that far ahead. All he knows is that he is on a self-appointed Holy Mission To Change The World.

But he's liable to be very surprised at what the final result looks like.

Also, in a strategic sense, saying we should "never have gone in" is sort of like saying that after 7 Dec 1941, we should have restricted our attentions to Japan, and ignored Germany and Italy.

Ditto for the now oft-quoted idea that "small countries pose no threat to us." The Axis Powers were, singly, relatively small, but collectively, a pretty large threat. And the problem with asymmetric warfare is that the size of your opponent's GNP, or even his standing army, is no real index of his ability to inflict unacceptable losses on you, especially if he's willing to take the casualties to do it. (And to our present OPFOR, "casualties= Glorious Martyrdom.")

The bottom line is, when somebody else decides the world isn't big enough for you and him, you have two choices. Agree with him, and go quietly into the night. Or kick the living h**l out of him, anywhere and everywhere you can.

I didn't say either one was a good choice. They're just the only two options in the only game in town.

The only flaw in that reasoning is that the Dems may not agree with you on exactly who their "core constituencies" are. From what I've seen, the Dems' leadership class regard the likes of DailyKos, HuffPo, MoveOn.org, the Earth Firsters, the "kill and eat the gun owners", "no nukes", etc., etc., crowd as their "core constituencies". And it's not like anyone they normally associate with (the cocktail-party intellectuals, the MSM, etc.) are going to tell them different.

As for those polls, Jimmy Carter was famous for sending back polls, or even official reports, that came up with results he didn't like with "Not Acceptable" across them in red Flair pen. From what I've seen, this lot is even less likely to accept results that conflict with their dogmas, let alone modify their behavior accordingly.

In the end, they will probably meet the same fate as the Carterites did in 1980. for roughly the same reasons. But only after they have succeeded in doing tremendous damage to us.

All in the name of "doing what's right", of course.

Dresden, eh? While he's at it, he might want to visit Hamburg.

Japan and Germany were both heavily industrialized and militarized at the time, naturally they would have posed a very substantial threat given their alliance was very overt.

Thing is, the majority of the basis of the invasion of Iraq and its respective UN Mandate was a search for WMDs that basically turned up fruitless (oil conspiracies regardless). With that search technically over, that leaves the searching power to basically clean up the mess they made and leave.

As for links to different countries/organizations, this time around the web is a lot more complex...

Agreed. I credit our enemies with noticing that if they take the field against us in open combat, on land, at sea, or in the air, or have an easily-definable infrastructure, they will lose because our war-fighting capability is very well designed to destroy exactly that kind of opposition. (Consider not just WW II, but both Iraq wars.) However, as long as they can prevent us from bringing them to such a "set-piece" battle, hide among civilians, and most importantly co-opt our own "intellectual Persians" who share their revulsion for our culture, they can win in the long run, by simply waiting for us to elect someone like The One, who will (they believe) "give them what they want" in the hopes that they will just go away.

What makes this especially useful for them is that The One simply does not understand what they really want, and would not believe it if he did. Besides, he's too busy trying to accomplish what he wants, to feed his own ego.

/As the old saying goes, "I would rather fight a hundred fools than have one on my side".

Sounds like a Vietnam body count to you? I dunno. From your link:

Further south, a suspected US missile strike killed nine people, mostly foreigners, in another militant stronghold near the Afghan border, officials said. The identities of the victims not immediately unclear.

Pakistan's leaders, encouraged by the United States, launched a full-scale offensive in Swat this week to halt the spread of Taliban control in districts within 60 miles (100 kilometers) of the capital.

[emphasis added, realwest]
Since earlier this week the same news reporting agency said that 100 heavily armed Taliban troops moved into SWAT (and they considered 100 heavily armed men to be a big deal threat) it's certainly possible. But I especially liked the bit about "mostly foreigners" - they mean folks from Tunisa, Morocco, and other Arab states in the ME. That's how they described the "foreign fighters" in Iraq- as being from Tunisa, etc. Could be the real deal.

Thing is, the majority of the basis of the invasion of Iraq and its respective UN Mandate was a search for WMDs that basically turned up fruitless (oil conspiracies regardless). With that search technically over, that leaves the searching power to basically clean up the mess they made and leave.

The search for WMDs was not the basis. The UN had been searching for years, and that was a pointless exercise. Look at it this way--if there were in fact no WMDs over the years between GW I and II, then Hussein could have saved us all a lot of trouble by demonstrating that fact. Instead, he found it profitable to pretend that he had them, and therefore led us on to the inevitable result. Play with fire, get burned.

He found it profitable to pretend he still had them (assuming there were none) with three audiences--he got to maintain his terrifying grip on people he had already gassed, he got to threaten his way around the neighborhood of his within Scud missile range, and he got to use weapons he no longer had, and which therefore cost nothing, as bargaining chips in protracted, deceptive dealings with the feckless wimps at the UN.

We called him on his miserable game, and he refused to show. We made it very clear what the stakes would be, and still he bluffed.

Remember that he had already used chemical weapons against defenseless villagers and military targets alike. Take that along with his refusal to show that he had no weapons, and right there you have sufficient justification to take him out and ensure, one way or another, that Iraq never uses WMDs again. No yellowcake memos, no sixteen words, no UN resolution or anything else required.

It was right and good to go into Iraq, and if we had not gotten rid of that Communist dictator who had made himself the ugly center of gravity in the middle east, we would not be able to bring any real pressure to bear in Afghanistan. Even without proving any other connection between Iraq and the Terrorists, the road to bin Laden's house is paved right over Saddam's dead body. In fact, the road to a lot of good things goes right over that unsightly bump.

As far as "cleaning up" any mess we made, we have been in the cleaning up business since the day we arrived. The New York Times' military recommendations notwithstanding, Iraq required a lot of force to "clean up", and while it could have been done better, it had to be done. It's not done yet, but it's a damned sight better than it was.

Good morning {vxbush} - I know what CPAP machines are but wonder: couldn't you have a "back up machine"? And how long does it take to get one fixed?

No, I wouldn't consider having a backup machine, as insurance pays for it and I doubt they would allow one. As for getting one fixed, that depends on what's wrong. If it just needs a new card in it (that looks like a credit card), then that might not take so long. But if there's something internal that is broken, then I think the whole thing has to go back to the company and we get a replacement.

I'm waiting for a call from a service tech from home. I already spoke to a service tech here, and he said, "Call your home tech, because it sounds like the machine needs to be replaced."

Loverly. So I'm waiting in the hotel room for the call, while the hubby tries not to blow up at the son for any little mistake. I don't know about you folks, but my husband does not do well with no sleep.

Speaking of which, could y'all just send me an e-mail so I can add your e-mail addy to my addy book - somehow it didn't get transferred (with about 1/3 of my other e-mail addy's) when I had 'em do the data transfer to this new machine!

Because it's Charles blog. You're entitled to your beliefs, and so is Charles.

I don't consider him to be bigoted. He's just pointing out some uncomfortable truths.

I'll second the "You're free to start your own blog" sentiment, and point out as well that I've never taken the quotes tossed out on open threads to be expressions of endorsement; they've always struck me simply as points for discussion.

Perhaps some skin thickener is in order.

Presently, Lil Miss is standing guard on her corner on the deck, ears exclamation points and her eyes scanning the back fence lest an errant squirrel dares to set foot on her territory. We've just shared some scribbled eggs with a little cheddar and we're ready to take on the day and I got some chores to get to a little later.

I purchased a brand new sectional sofa in brilliant red to replace the Ugly Sofas presently in the living room. Delivery should be before next weekend and I can hardly wait. The old sofas are so large that the patio doors had to be dismantled to accomodate them when I moved in and there's no way I'm going to do that to get rid of them. Instead, my friend and I are going to hack them into managable pieces and dispose of them curbside. It's going to be GREAT therapy! :D

Speaking of Art, a friend of ours is an artist/instructor at Duke. She's a Nigerian citizen (working on U.S. citizenship) who's lived in the West for about a decade. Anyway, she was selected to execute one of several (I'll get the details this PM) designs for the upcoming FIFA World Cup tournament, meaning that her "logo" will be seen by literally billions of people around the world. Pretty much an artist's dream.

Well you're partly correct - I'd be a lot more impolite in person.
As for the sun coming up, you claim to be concerned over how LGF has changed over the years, at least implying that you've actually, ya know, been out here for a while - but somehow you missed the fact that Charles lives in California and all posts and comments are time stamped as PACIFIC TIME. So you'd expect him to be up and working at the California time you posted?
And bullshit on the dialogue crap - you're only about the 1,000 person to start an attack on Charles/LGF the way you did. Not even very inventive. You don't want a dialogue cause EVERYTHING YOU'VE ASKED HAS BEEN ASKED BEFORE AND ASWERED BEFORE BY CHARLES. You're just a sleeper troll. Figured you could get away with that crap cause Charles isn't around to monitor the thread.

I thought I was discussing something but you guys don't seem to want to talk about it. You just want to show me the door.

What are you discussing?

You tell us that you are an ex Catholic who shopped around and found something (we don't know what) relating to reincarnation that was more personally pleasing to you, and you don't seem to like people who think you are going to hell, yet you claim anything related to Christianity is off limits for criticism.

Any belief, including yours, is allowed but if it is attempted to be imposed on all others then it is fair game. You are defending those who do just that, and that makes you fair game; not to mention that you sound like a whinny troll.

You are lying. You have "never met" a biblical literalist? I noticed your little trick with the single quotes. So riddle me this: how do you know that LGF isn't really the Anti-'Christian'-ist Blog, rather than Anti-Christianist? How do you determine who is a Christian and who is a 'Christian'? I guess you don't care too much for the Baptists, you lying troll--perhaps they are the 'Christians'.

Phaedo, Schmaedo. I hope you enjoy Conundrum-Solving somewhere else--you have failed to grasp the essential conflicts in the two conundra you wave about, and proceeded to "solve" these problems by describing them incorrectly.

So take your smarmy superiority and your poorly-reasoned cures for cancer and insult some other blog proprietor. Maybe Atlas could use you for something--we're no longer accepting applications for dimwitted thesaurus-wielding jackasses here.

Your process is obvious. You have logged in on an account about two years old and tried so hard to be reasonable, to engage Charles in debate (which he rudely refused), to ask him in reasonable, even-handed terms (hence your erratic lurches into good manners) to discuss whether the criticism seen on your favorite sites (which I bet you won't care to list) is valid or unfair (and you will be forced to conclude, sadly, that it is all true and worse.

Suspected arson attack on Islamic centre

Police are examining CCTV footage of two hooded men running to a car after the explosion. They are appealing for two Asian men who helped to put out the fire to come forward.

So two hooded men start the fire and drive away then two Asian guys show up, put out the fire and then disappear. Hmmm...

I saw him toss O'Neil to the floor his rookie year right before halftime...Shaq was pissed...right after the 3rd quarter started Laimbeer threw him down again, exact same spot...O'Neil started to get up and Laimbeer jumped and straddled him with his fists balled up...hahaha...gotta teach the rookies

Bill Laimbeer was one of the worst human beings in NBA history. He was dirty on the court and a scumbag off the court.

Chuck Daly, on the other hand was a class act. If you have been watching any NBA games during the playoffs, you see many announcers wearing lapel pins with "CD" on them. That was to show support for Coach Daly.

He will be missed.

Greets and saluts from the somewhat soggy NYC metro area. Hope everyone is doing well here. The Pope is in the Middle East, and he spoke of the inseparable bond between Catholics and Jews. Too bad there are many who see it as a love-hate relationship than one of genuine respect and tolerance.

"May our encounter today inspire in us a renewed love for the canon of sacred scripture and a desire to overcome all obstacles to the reconciliation of Christians and Jews in mutual respect and cooperation in the service of that peace to which the word of God calls us," said the German-born Benedict.

The pope's visit to Mount Nebo was the first of many that Benedict will make to holy places during his first visit to the Middle East. His visit to Jordan is his first to an Arab country since becoming Pope.

Meanwhile, the Islamists are playing games (when aren't they?). Hamas thugs are now saying that there was no attempt to request a hudna.

Concurrently, Hizbullah says that the UN is providing cover for Israeli war crimes. That's a riot. Hizbullah was supposed to be disarmed under UN SCR 1701, and yet they're still armed and dangerous in South Lebanon, and they engaged in human rights violations, war crimes, and calls to genocide, but they think that the UN is covering for Israel? Well, that's how the media portrays it, so why not push that meme until it becomes the generally accepted version of events.

— David Brin

I agree with every word except that I think most religious people don't pray for some of their neighbors to go to hell, they pray that their neighbor won't go to hell.

Hey weren't we told that military commissions were a bad thing under the Bush Administration. They were evil, and yet Obama is about to revive 'em? Funny how that works.

Guess that Bush had it right after all. Of course the media will say that Obama is doing it right - and fixing all the problems created by Bush, but that's just a smokescreen for the fact that Obama simply doesn't know what the heck he's doing and those who understand the issues know that Bush had it right all along.

Vespers is the evening prayer service in the Western Catholic, Eastern (Byzantine) Catholic, and Eastern Orthodox, Anglican, and Lutheran liturgies of the canonical hours. The word comes from the Greek εσπερινός and the Latin vesper, meaning "evening." The term is also in limited use in some Protestant denominations (such as the Seventh-day Adventist) to describe evening services. It is also referred to in Anglican circles as Evening Prayer. A world-record killing shot by a Canadian sniper detachment in Afghanistan could never have been made with the ammunition they were issued when they left Edmonton last winter, the triggerman said in a recent interview. The Canadian .50-calibre rounds have a maximum range of between 2,200 and 2,300 metres.

But the U.S. rounds, they discovered, "fly farther, faster," said Cpl. "Bill", a 26-year-old native of Fogo Island, Nfld.

May 9, 2009

IN THE MAIL: Robert H. Churchill’s To Shake Their Guns in the Tyrant’s Face: Libertarian Political Violence and the Origins of the Militia Movement. By “libertarian,” he’s not really referring to modern libertarians. From the introduction, as part of a discussion of the 1990s militia movement:

It seemed to me as a historian that the concept of extremism begged a question: how do certain ideas, movements and political impulses come to be considered extremist? As a citizen whose political identity was shaped by the late twentieth century, I saw the militias’ assertion of a right to use armed force to change government policy as new, threatening, and beyond the pale of legitimate politics. But as a historian of early America I found achingly familiar their assertion of a right to take up arms to prevent the exercise of unconstitutional power by the federal government. As a historian, then, I was faced with a more specific question: how has the United States as a political society come to view the assertion of that right as extremist?

This book might be profitably read along with Pauline Maier’s From Resistance to Revolution.

Yesterday he linked to a libertarian debate against democracy. He's starting to scare me.

God is the greatest scientist:

Ask the scientific men of the world how many of the arts can be reduced to a science? When they are so reduced they become permanent; but until then they are uncertain. They go and come, appear and disappear. When they are reduced to science and system their permanency, and stability are assured. It is so with government-until it is reduced to science it is liable to be rent asunder by anarchy and confusion, and caprice and scattered to the four winds. Government, to be stable and permanent and have any show for success must be reduced to a science. It is the same with religion; but our traditions are such that it is one of the most difficult things in the world to make men believe that the revealed religion of heaven is a pure science, and all true science in the possession of men now is a part of the religion of heaven and has been revealed from that source. But it is hard to get the people to believe that God is a scientific character, that He lives by science or strict law, that by this He is, and by law he was made what He is; and will remain to all eternity because of His faithful adherence to law.

-Brigham Young

...in other words, go where the science leads, and it leads you to the true character of God.

Pope's address disappoints Muslim leaders

Jordanian clerics expressed disappointment that Pope Benedict XVI in an address to Muslim leaders on Saturday failed to offer a new apology for remarks seen as targeting Islam.

"We wanted him to clearly apologise," Sheikh Yusef Abu Hussein, mufti of the southern city of Karak, told AFP after the pope's address in Amman's huge Al-Hussein Mosque.

"What the pope said (in 2006) about the Prophet Mohammed is untrue. Islam did not spread through the power of sword. It's a religion of tolerance and faith," Hussein said.

The pope had in 2006 quoted a medieval Christian emperor who criticised some teachings of the Prophet Mohammed as "evil and inhuman."

The pontiff apologised at the time for the "unfortunate misunderstanding" but ahead of his visit to Jordan the kingdom's main opposition party, the Islamic Action Front, said the pope was not welcome unless he again apologised.

"What the pope said was not an apology," said Hammam Said, the overall leader of Jordan's Muslim Brotherhood and University of Jordan professor.

"We want the apology to be clear just like the insults to Islam were clear. He should acknowledge his mistakes. That's our position and the position of all Jordanians."

In these respects we differ, from the Christian world, for our religion will not clash with or contradict the facts of science in any particular. You may take geology, for instance, and it is a true science; not that I would say for a moment that all the conclusions and deductions of its professors are true, but its leading principles are; they are facts-they are eternal; and to assert that the Lord made this earth out of nothing is preposterous and impossible. God never made something out of nothing; it is not in the economy or law by which the worlds were, are, or will exist.

Not experienced enough to be vice-president (or president). Even though we have gotten certain "soft" answers on her beliefs about creationism, religion and some other social issues, I don't think we are getting the full truth, just more politician talk.

Whether she is really socially moderate, she is not perceived that way by the general public, which is a problem. It has been shown that in a off the cuff session of trying to answer questions, she really doesn't have good answers (although she is fine when she is controlling the conversation).

The BNP may conceivably win one or two seats on one or two local councils - they will definitely not win a seat in parliament.
Btw - the elections here in June are for the EU Parliament and for local councils - they are not the General Elections.

Science education is sorely lacking, Seattle picked its math texts.

UW Math Prof. Cliff Mass isn't happy.

Tragedy in Seattle

Tonight the Seattle School Board finally voted on the acquisition of high school math textbooks, and the results were both disappointing and tragic. In a four to three vote they agreed to adopt the Discovering Math series...extremely weak discovery/fuzzy math textbooks. Found to be "unsound" by a panel of mathematicians hired by the State Board of Education, the books are obviously deficient to anyone who knows about mathematics. What really is upsetting is that that the Seattle School District has now picked poor math curricula three times...since they selected very weak math books at the elementary (Everyday Math) and middle schools levels (CPM math). The trifecta of ineffective math books.
The bottom line of all this is that it will be virtually impossible for students in the State's largest school district to get a decent education in math. This has not been a successful district...with their students' math performance lagging seriously... and they have now sealed the academic fates of students over the next decade or so (the last time they acquired new high school math textbooks was over a decade ago).

I, for myself, think this is true. The correlation between increased secualrism and icnrease in New Age stuff is too obvious.

I made this comment last night in a spinoff thread to Syrah, and I like to share it again this morning:

I have taken out my copy of the Federalist Papers, along with a book published by the House Republicans in 1995, and an old civics text book I picked up at a used book store.

I looked at the rhetoric used by the House Republicans book on the balanced budget- and they called it a moral imperative. Where did that morality go the last 8 years? Pretty much, when they kicked Newt out, the fiscal morality left the party.

Subsidizing social issues, where the unconstrained is ruling the day- has led to these moral issues where others now see an opportunity to offer their idea of a solution. Instead of stopping the source of this moral decay- the government subsidizing it- they seek to impose a different answer.

I see this sphere as open to hybrid visions - which leaves those of a constrained vision more ideological opponents. Socialists, marxists, and fascists (for lack of better terms) all stand opposed to the constrained enlightenment approach our Founders envisioned.

Thats what G.K.Chesterton said, about 100 years ago:
'The trouble with atheists isn't that they believe nothing - its that they will believe anything.'

I, for myself, think this is true. The correlation between increased secualrism and icnrease in New Age stuff is too obvious.

Mind - this doesn't mean that all atheists must of necessity believe in hocus-pocus. I know quite a few who actually argue more fiercely against such crap than even against God.

IMHO, the "atheists" you first refer to are those who assume a mantle of atheism out of a need to rebel. Since their thinking is emotion-based, it can lead them in strange directions.

Studies have shown that people who don't believe in god are more likely to believe in everything else including, aliens, seances, ...I don't know if that has anything to do with it. At the core, I don't think science is being adequately taught in most classrooms in public schools. how many people who are anti-vaxers are also public school educated?

And my hostility to atheism stems from that fact. I see religion properly serving as a bulwark against moral stupidity. It often has not done so, but it should do so.

Agree - and another great chunk are people who can't do with any spiritual dsicipline but prefer to do it 'their way', picking up the newest, most fashionable 'thoughts' from the MFM.

They mostly have not thought at all, unlike some proper, thoughtful atheists who actually know what they reject and why - and can argue the point as opposed to just 'feel' ...

569 haakondahl  Sat, May 9, 2009 9:20:44am

I don't see much of a correlation (in any direction) between religion/irreligion and sensibility/insensibility.

I think that there are plenty of people of deep faith who are able to benefit from that, and plenty of people of deep faith who somehow completely missed out on having bullshit filters installed. Likewise on the not-so-faith-oriented side of the aisle.
Sagan vs. Velikovsky, Randi vs. Geller.

And that's without getting into the mass murderers. On either side.

I think that some people are simply incapable of sorting manna from manure. They get this way through not having critical thinking skills developed at an early age, and while some strains of religion will have a tendency to cause this lack, so will an amazing amount of leftist claptrap--an even worse problem in that our very schools and textbooks are filled with the smug and illogical just-so "scientific facts" which somehow always result in more money flowing to the parasites of big government and big laziness.

Mind - this doesn't mean that all atheists must of necessity believe in hocus-pocus. I know quite a few who actually argue more fiercely against such crap than even against God.

You are aware that 'hocus-pocus' originated with very devout people? The peasants in the middle ages, who were terrified of God but very much believed, would hear the words "hoc est enim corpus meum" during the words of institution and though they didn't know what they meant, they knew the words changed the bread and wine into the body and blood. So they figured any words that powerful might be able to be used for other situations they wanted to change.

This correlation of which you speak must then mean that that the majority of recognized scientists are also New Age woos rubbing themselves with crystals?

There is probably also a correlation regarding the number of limbs that they all have, if you get my gist; but I am always interested in learning new facts, if presented.

Athiests don't believe in hocus-pocus, the faithful do.

re: #592 haakondahl

I can't speak for NT, but it surprises me because you admit that while religion "should" act as a bulwark against moral failure but often does not, you seem comfortable asserting that atheism causes moral failure.

Would you expand your description of atheism in this context as simply irreligion, to encompass agnosticism as well?

I'm not sure if I would. The link between atheism and moral failure is not causative. I'd say that the rejection of morality that causes moral failure and that religion is the best and most reliable method for moral instruction.

It implies the existence of others. It was a response to yma's, specifically about a certain category of atheists.

Just my opinion, but rebellion does not constitute atheism just because those in question are under the impression that this is the meaning.

Non religious would be more accurate, assuming that the rebellion is against society or culture. If the "rebellion" is against belief in god, then it would seem to me to be a contradiction, if not an oxymoron.

It has nothing to do with religion. Morality in our society decreased when the government started its war on poverty. Stop funding it- make people go back to their families, churches, local private charities to get help. The busy body, know-it all elitists thought they could make it better with a government program. Spit on your own living room floor.

Tell one of the ladies to re-fill your drink, and call her "darlin' " along the way.

Scratch your nuts--constantly.

Keep asking the men if they would like to come to a "meeting" [slack-jawed wink] tomorrow.

Insist that everybody hold hands while you say Grace, and pray for Jesus to deliver us all from the twin scourges of communism and heathenism, hopefully in the election of 2012.

Ask where folks are from--no matter what they say, ask them what it's like outside of [your town].

Hi Sharm! Hope you're well today! I think the "War on Poverty" is sorta like the "War on Drugs" - good political talking points ("Well I voted for a 15% increase in the funding for..."). In other words, throw money at the problems, don't try to solve them and besides which, while I do empathize A LOT with folks who are living in poverty (and not I'm not being patronizing here) I think it's better to make or better yet to enable business/the private sector to make it possible for someone to work themselves out of poverty.
This means the things you mentioned - private charities and all, who, in my personal experience do a MUCH better job than does government) - but also funding programs for adult education and that sort of thing.
Throwing money at problems is like throwing a batch of fish to a group of hungry people; they may be fed for a day, but it's a LOT better to teach 'em how to fish - and to make the envrionweenies let 'em fish!

Of course religion is one method for moral instruction regardless of the potential it has for justifying anything; but in my opinion the most reliable method is living in close proximity with other people who know who you are and can reach out and touch you, so to speak. In other words, family and neighbors.

Only those who cannot be touched by correcting hands, and who cannot think through such matters by themselves will require the eye in the sky, so to speak.

No I went the extra mile and bought the Karma Sutra translation of SoS.

re: #652 realwest

I think there is a case to be made for government spending on educational opportunities for adults, but it should again be locally handled. Like county schools for trade and technical jobs, community colleges, etc.

That would be one that believes in all manner of new age nonsense and superstitions. In my experience though atheists usually have a high degree of immunity to that sort of thing.

'xactly, I am one of those immune folks. ;-)

Yeah but remember, it's gotta be from literature. ;-)

I've been commanded by the creator to make you believe, even if I must smite you about the head...
Now where's that bible...**shuffles through piles of playboy, hustler, etc**

Ye've gotta use a proper, old, huge family Bible - this modern stuff is too lightweight, not good enough for any proper smiting!

:-)))

Huh?

Sounds like you think that is a definition of atheism, although I'm inclined to think you just happen to have your foot in your mouth at the moment...

Uhh ... seriously ... I think we're on different wavelengths. I obviously didn't grasp what you were saying in your earlier.

Try it again, if you wish.

re: #670 gmsc

If I read the upthread correctly, pBMb is referring to the ones in the '60s, who were more just trying to get away from mainstream religion, but headed towards other types of religious beliefs – yet called themselves atheists.

Prescisely.

I get the feeling we are having a problem with semantics here, including pre-boomer. Let's try not to use the word atheist in the same way creationists use the word theory, and all will be hunky dory.

Rightie-ho!

... and don't start with 'unbeliever', or else!

Hiya {subsailor68}!

That hero is actually a Brit - and he did this oncredible thing for charity.
His sheer determination is unbelievable.

Thanks for posting this!

Morning {yma}! OOPS! (blushing badly). If I'd paid more attention I'd have noticed "London Marathon."

But my God bless this man stands!

(Okay, let's just say that it makes me proud to be Scottish on both sides.)

The charity he did this amazing feat for is this one:
Help for Heroes

It was instituted because our NuLAb government is treating our vets so shabbily, and closing the military hospitals down - gah, lets not go there or I'll scream ...

Agreed.

I do, in practice, used it as a catch-word, but (though I firmly believe in God) don't attach a stereotypical negative to it.

Aarrgghh - ye should get out more!
:-)

I have some of those woo-woo atheists in my extended family ...

I don't think they've thought much about what it means to be sceptical then. There are 'lazy atheists' (just as there are 'lazy believers) who just choose that stance because it fits with their peer group or whatever. Anyone who is an atheist because they have actually thought about the problems inherent with faith and categories like "the supernatural" is not going to be impressed by new age nonsense. Like I said, if you take a look at some atheist forums you'll see that they are just as opposed to new age quackery as they are to religion in general.

re: #120 redc1c4

like B*rry B*nds... the asterisk record holder.

/you were saying?

Thats exactly the BS that comes from Dodger fans. Barry Bonds has received so much crap over the years that you'd think he invented steroids. No, he didn't. He was one player out of hundreds of players, mediocre and superstars, that injected themselves with performance enhancing drugs. Every time Bonds was boo'd by the opposing teams fans was a sign of how hypocritical these people are, as they delightfully cheered their own tainted teams.

How about those Red Sox teams of 2004 and 2007 that won the World Series? Manny Ramirez, David Ortiz, Kevin Millar, Pedro Martinez...and thats just off the top of my head. Should we put an asterik next to those WS championship teams?

Yet you believe that only Bonds deserves an asterik next to his name? Pathetic. Just the scapegoat in an era infested with steroids.

David Brin says it llike nobody else; Creation is more vast and deep than our puny brains can comprehend. The Creationists do G-d a disservice by insisting that our little scrap of dust orbiting an insignificant star in an out of the way spiral arm of just another galaxy is really the center of the universe.
Pardon me, but I have had too many beers to be entirely with it.
