Religion of Tolerance Demands Apology from Pope

Jordanian Muslim leaders welcomed Pope Benedict to their country by whining and complaining about his speech that urged reconciliation between Christians and Muslims.

And of course, the Pope has already issued the apology they’re demanding.

AMMAN (AFP) — Jordanian clerics expressed disappointment that Pope Benedict XVI in an address to Muslim leaders on Saturday failed to offer a new apology for remarks seen as targeting Islam.

“We wanted him to clearly apologise,” Sheikh Yusef Abu Hussein, mufti of the southern city of Karak, told AFP after the pope’s address in Amman’s huge Al-Hussein Mosque. “What the pope said (in 2006) about the Prophet Mohammed is untrue. Islam did not spread through the power of sword. It’s a religion of tolerance and faith,” Hussein said. [Don’t forget “peace.” – ed.]

The pope had in 2006 quoted a medieval Christian emperor who criticised some teachings of the Prophet Mohammed as “evil and inhuman.” The pontiff apologised at the time for the “unfortunate misunderstanding” but ahead of his visit to Jordan the kingdom’s main opposition party, the Islamic Action Front, said the pope was not welcome unless he again apologised
.
“What the pope said was not an apology,” said Hammam Said, the overall leader of Jordan’s Muslim Brotherhood and University of Jordan professor. “We want the apology to be clear just like the insults to Islam were clear. He should acknowledge his mistakes. That’s our position and the position of all Jordanians.”

“We had hoped the pope would take into consideration the feelings of Muslims,” said Sheikh Jamal Jumaah of the city of Madaba after the pope’s speech in which he urged reconciliation between Christians and Muslims. “He is a guest of the Muslims and we expected him to say one word. It’s not too late. He can still apologise.”

“What the pope said (in 2006) about the Prophet Mohammed is untrue. Islam did not spread through the power of sword. It’s a religion of tolerance and faith,” Hussein said.

That explains the tolerance symbol on the Saudi flag:

Dear Islam,

I am sorry. I am sorry your religion is so weak that it cannot take even the mildest of criticism. I am sorry that your religion has made you so intolerant. I am sorry that your religion has kept your people from advancing into the modern era like the rest of the world. I am sorry that your religion reeks with misogyny. I am sorry that we have to live in a world with some of the followers of your religion.

Yours truly,

The Pope

Probaby, but he won't. I know I'll get flamed over this and I just don't care: I don't think Islam is our enemy - if the Islamic countries of the world prefer to live the way they do, that's their business. It's when they export jihad to US that I get pissed off.
And the Pope was right, so screw off on any further "apologies".

You've got to admit...they are good at marketing. Once they have the actual words of the apology, then it'll be on posters all around the world, and all across the media, in their parts of the world, with the explanation of how even the Pope knows Christianity is wrong.

If he gives in, thinking, like The WON, that it will open a dialogue, then it's all over.

As much as we try to practice tolerance of the Muslim faith the reality is that there is a great deal of "evil and inhuman" text contained in the teaching of Mohammed. I believe the Pope Benedict XVI made his comments in 2006 and was referring to Manuel II Palaiologos.

Manuel II Palaiologos died in 1425. Thus it has been 584 years since the death of this Roman Emperor (who I assume was far from a symbol of benevolence) made these comments in reference to Islam.

584 years and it still falls on deaf ears on a religious philosophy that still refuses to join the 21st century and instead demands apologies when faced with criticism.

I beg to differ with the noble mufti.

Whole books on the violent form of jihad have been written - by Muslims. Quite often they even have helpful titles like kitab al-maghazi ("book of raids"). There are also several ahadith I could quote, like "Paradise is under the shade of swords".

If he thinks we'll buy the argument that Islam didn't spread through the sword, then he's the one who needs to apologise for his insults - to our intelligence.

The LAT has a rundown of locations where the Pope will be visiting. Bias alert includes the following:

Noting that Israel annexed the Temple Mount and East Jerusalem in the Six Day War without mentioning that it was Jordan that attacked Israel first on that front. Had Jordan not attacked, Jerusalem would have remained a divided city.

The 1990 Temple Mount riots started with thousands of Palestinian thugs attacking Jewish worshippers in the Kotel; which escalated to the point where those Palestinians were killed. The emphasis was on Israel killing - not Palestinians precipitating the conflict.

Amateur Hour: Obama Admin. Official Draws Largest Fine In The History Of The Federal Government

President Obama's choice for the government's No. 2 housing job is embroiled in the largest fine in U.S. history for "blatant violations" of open records laws after the Washington State Supreme Court chastised his office for withholding documents detailing taxpayer costs for a new professional football stadium in Seattle.

In fact, Muslims in the Middle East are getting tired of visiting Western leaders who talk down to them about tolerance but don't practice it at home. If Western society is so multi-cultural, why do Westerners care so much about Christians in the Middle East?

I'm sure Middle Eastern Muslims would love to have this author be the Pope's speechwriter.

Uh, what about the one you did have a problem with?

I've lived in Arab countries for some 10 years over time, and they are indeed very sociable people, individually.

The problem is not most individuals, it is that their culture does not tolerate individuality when it comes to larger social tendencies, and that includes certain fundamentals, like being seen to pray or fast at the proscribed times.

OT: Get ready for the next round of insanity...
Next step? No guns allowed for right-wing 'extremists' (WND)

A new gun law being considered in Congress, if aligned with Department of Homeland Security memos labeling everyday Americans as potential "threats," could potentially deny firearms to pro-lifers, gun-rights advocates, tax protesters, animal rights activists, and a host of others – any already on the expansive DHS watch list for potential "extremism."

Rep. Peter King, R-N.Y., has sponsored H.R. 2159, the Denying Firearms and Explosives to Dangerous Terrorists Act of 2009, which permits the attorney general to deny transfer of a firearm to any "known or suspected dangerous terrorist." The bill requires only that the potential firearm transferee is "appropriately suspected" of preparing for a terrorist act and that the attorney general "has a reasonable belief" that the gun might be used in connection with terrorism.

Sheikh Yusef Abu Hussein: "Islam did not spread through the power of sword."

The Sheikh is correct. The Arab armies did NOT convey the message of the prophet to those whom they conquered. They were far more interested in profiting from the higher taxes they could levy upon unbelievers. (Islamic Imperialism, Efraim Karsh; Yale University Press, 2006, see Chapter 4, "The House of Islam and the House of War")

The Arabs violated the prophet's commandment.

He was hired as a cook (remote survey work on Sumatra). Had attitude problems following my instructions to the extent that I fired him. Took some company property with him when I had him helicoptered out.
Confronted him in his village when we got back. Recovered the property but it got a little heated.

Gotta run - work calls - bbl

(It always bugged me when Who Wants To Be A Millionaire asked what the computer term for 1,000 bytes is. I've been in computer for most of my life, and have never heard of a term for 1,000 bytes.)

1,000 bytes is something to flea from!

Well, this pope has been pretty outspoken on a number of "controversial" topics and has shown courage in doing so. The difference is that he's a thinker and BHO is a serial panderer who has no concept of history and believes his cult of personality can achieve his goals.

I'll take the thinker any day.

Pope Benedict is indeed formidable.
I recall something an anglican Bishop said, who attended a symposion there, in October last year, where Pope Benedict had the chair.
That bishop, no mean intellectual himself, and not exactly a spring chicken either, said that they all felt like in college - and not daring to waffle or fall asleep, as the Pope's eyes were on all and everybody, sharp as the proverbial pin ...

re: #136 pre-Boomer Marine brat

The Sheikh is correct. The Arab armies did NOT convey the message of the prophet to those whom they conquered. They were far more interested in profiting from the higher taxes they could levy upon unbelievers. (Islamic Imperialism, Efraim Karsh; Yale University Press, 2006, see Chapter 4, "The House of Islam and the House of War")

The Arabs violated the prophet's commandment.

/venality . at . its . nadir

The point wasn't so much the spread of Islam as the majority faith, as just "the spread of Islam". All jihad requires is that Islam spread as the dominant faith.

Karsh has the Umayyad, "Jihad State" theory in mind. For the Umayyad caliphate, Allah told them to extend Arab supremacy but not necessarily Islam for the masses. Karsh is a polemicist; a more instructive read, if more narrow, would be Khalid Blankinship's book on "The End of the Jihad State". In essence, the Arab economy collapsed under Caliph Hisham when the Arabs ran out of productive non-Muslims to conquer and tax.

When the Arabs ran up against tribes as equally warlike as themselves - in the hinterlands of Persia, Afghanistan, the Berbers - forcing them to pay a jizya just didn't work.

I'm thinking the 'Abbasids, who were a long of nasty things but at least not Arab racists like the Umayyads, may have been the first to give up on the dhimmat stage, and simply killed or enslaved the tribes they didn't like. They were particularly keen to chain up the Turks, a real worry for the Arabs in Persia.

I can't say I'm surprised. He also seems to be a man who has a grasp on the temporal world as well as the spiritual world and the willingness, and intellectual capacity, to engage each on its own terms.

He's certainly a new breed of Pope; a man for his time.

He should tell them he is sorry in Arabic and then turn around and call them a bunch of wankers in Latin. Then, deny he said it when they call him on it.

Eheu, fellatores. Edepol! Nimis stultissimi nunc et semper estis. Apage, apage hinc. Hercle, omnes vos Orcus acherontem eripiat.

It works. Hmm... or perhaps not. Probably the Pope has a classier style of Latin than street patois.

No it's not. That's the instrumentation, you, ah, wank on. Amongst other synonyms. For example: Partes Verenda which literally translates into: The parts that must be revered. Sadly even the best English-Latin dictionaries are heavily bowdlerized BUT reading your usual spectrum of Latin authors and perusing an contemporary academic dictionary such as the Oxford Latin Dictionary, you'll marvel at the breadth and inventiveness of Latin invective.

RW

I've said this before (and took some heat) Having lived, worked and played in Muslim Countries - I agree with you RW. Yes, there are some bad guys within their fold. Uh, I think we may have a few nut cakes within western religious circles as well? (who have and do violence upon us)

However, the overwhelming majority of Muslims that I have met and interacted with are sweet people. In fact only one did I have a problem with.

Dear Bobibutu and "Realwest",

excuse me but whether Muslims are sweet or not is not the point. it is the ideology of Islam and its oppressive system, which way too many (sweet) people, especially women, must suffer from through no fault of their own---at home and in Islamic public. I don't see why those should not be worth enjoying basic human rights.

any concept of peace between two fundamentally different visions of human dignity and way of life can be nothing but an illusion, because the claim of universal validity by each of them already and normatively does incorporate a declaration of war against the other, be it on the international level or on the micro level between human beings on the streets. say, if I am finding myself among disguised Muslima, one conclusion is that these women are horrifyingly objectified by Islam and deprived of their right of self-determination; the other is the awkward signal that the Hijab communicates towards me as a person---that I, daring to show my hair and skin, am nothing but an unworthy, because "faithless" "bitch" through the eyes of Islam. so please, who, or which nation else, if not the American, does stand for the defense of Western freedom---idealistically and historically---and is capable of fighting any form of fascism? please don't tell me that the American nation has become a post-heroic appeaser nation...

re: #200 ssuLaLA

Your point is well taken. However in all my travels in Muslim lands in the 60s and 70s - I never saw a woman wearing a Hijab. Granted my travels were in "moderate" countries. Turkey, Iran, Malaysia, Abu Dhabi, Indonesia, Bruni, Singapore, etc.

Now the ideology of Islam - sure, I have issues with as do I with parts of the Bible and Book of Mormon. Most folks do not take that stuff literally. Some do and blow things up and take peoples lives - altho I must admit I haven't heard of any Mormons taking out any Catholics even with the harshness the BoM has towards the Catholics.

I have issues with the suppression of anyone. We all bear some guilt - and yes the muslims more so over history than others.

The radical fanatics are in the minority - and yes - we can do without them - and they will always be with us.

207 AFVetWife  Sat, May 9, 2009 3:46:35pm

I just pray for the Pope's safety in all his travels. And I firmly believe he has nothing to apologize for. Life would be so much simpler (and safer) for all if only we could bring the Word to the whole world!

208 rhymeswithright  Sat, May 9, 2009 3:54:47pm

Seems to me that the appropriate response should be the following apology by the Pope:

"I'm sorry for having offended Muslims by pointing out that their faith is one irrevocably wedded to violence. I'm sorry that so many faithful Muslims engage in the cold-blooded murder of innocents. I'm sorry that Islam does no allow for the human right of religious freedom and the right to speak freely about religious matters. And I'm sorry that Christians did not act to strangle Islam in its infancy before it became a malignancy that afflicts the world in so many terrible ways."

re: #130 swamprat

The people in charge of the first apology have been sacked.
The next apology has been written by a completely new group of people at great expense.

Those responsible for the sacking of those previosly sacked, have been sacked.
The apology has been completed with little effort and at minimal cost by Freddie the wonder llama.

Thank you for your kind words! I was actually worried my second comment was incoherent because... well, it was. :^)

Maybe that last paragraph in that comment should have been saved and made into a separate post. Umayyad race relations are easy to understand - Muslim Arabs of the Hijaz: good; everyone else: slaves or dhimmis or dead. 'Abbasid views on race were more complex. According to 'Abbasid propaganda, they were running a properly Muslim state and were race-neutral. In practice, um, the Zanj.

I have a lot of information buzzing around my head that I've picked up this past decade. Getting it all sorted out onto a blog comment can be tricky.

Don't ask me. It seems like Islam is Satan's religion. Very, very, very, young girls as wives. Killing innocent people by terrorism or military might, or executing them. Multiple wives are abuse of females. Fighting with Jews for thousands of years. I could go on and on, but you get the picture.
